HE Balochistan budget for the next fiscal year with a total outlay of Rs584.083 billion was presented in the provincial assembly on Friday after the clash between the opposition and the police came to a close. The Balochistan Assembly premises had earlier been blocked by MPAs of the opposition on Friday to prevent the presentation of the provincial budget for the new fiscal year. The budget session could not commence at its scheduled time of 4 pm as opposition members locked up the assembly gates and prevented administrative officials from opening the gates. The opposition members continued their protest inside and outside the assembly building, Dawn reported. Following the administration’s failure to open the assembly building, negotiations had been underway between Quetta Deputy Commissioner Aurangzeb Badini and oppo-

sition leader Advocate Malik Sikandar Khan. Meanwhile, Balochistan government spokesperson Liaquat Shahwani said in a statement at the time of the protest that no constituency had been ignored in the budget proposals. He added that multiple development projects such as Sariab Road had been launched in opposition constituencies. The blockage had devolved into a chaotic scene as scores of protestors, opposition lawmakers, and supporters outside the assembly were baton-charged by police. The opposition’s protest and clashes intensified, as per reports, when the chief minister arrived at the assembly. Police had managed to open the doors of the assembly so that the government lawmakers could enter for the budget session. Police further said the opposition lawmakers had locked all four doors of the Balochistan Assembly to prevent the budget session from taking place. The budget session commenced under

the chair of Speaker Abdul Qudoos Bizenjo. Opposition MPA Nasrullah Zehray accused the police of using violent methods to disperse the “peaceful protest” outside the assembly. Sana Baloch, another MPA, lashed out at the government, saying that the province was at its worst state since its inception. He said lawmakers Abdul Wahid Siddiqui and Babar Rahim Mengal had been injured by the police’s armoured vehicle. Balochistan Finance Minister Mir Zahoor Ahmad Buledi presented the budget during the session. Separately, while speaking to Geo News, Balochistan Information Minister Liaquat Shahwani had said the clashes had proven how illdisciplined and non-serious the Opposition was. “Assembly is a prestigious institution and they have attacked it. The same assembly whose members these people themselves are,” he said, attacking opposition MPAs. “They are doing this by design and deliberately,” he said. “They have proven they do not follow any democratic values and to protect their personal interests, they [opposition] are ready to go to any length.” Shahwani said if the opposition was serious, it would have properly gone through the budget and recommended its suggestions. “Have you heard their proposals or demands?” he asked. “This is the best budget in Pakistan’s history and will be presented today,” he added. He rejected reports that the Balochistan chief minister had been hit by a flower pot, adding that the Opposition supporters’ act of hurling objects was “shameful”. “After this, they will not be able to even take the name of democracy ever again,” he added.

Shehbaz, Bilawal walk out of NA session during energy minister’s budget response NewS DeSk Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif on Friday walked out of the assembly during Energy Minister Hammad Azhar’s response to the opposition’s severe criticism of the budget, to which the federal minister challenged him to stay and hear him out. “If you are not cowards then remain in your seats and listen to what I have to say. If you have the strength to hear the truth, then listen to what I have to say,” Azhar said, but the PML-N president did not react and exited the house. A few minutes later, Pakistan People’s Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari – who had already delivered a stinging speech wherein he stated that the government’s four percent growth number was a “lie” – followed suit. Azhar began his speech today by hitting back at Bilawal, saying that “those who have never worked a day in their life or taken any responsibility are telling us how to run the economy and the country.” He said the stains left behind by corruption “could not be erased by

Dasu Dam to usher in new era of socio-economic development: PM Imran DASU APP

Prime Minister Imran Khan on Friday said the construction of water reservoirs in the country is vital to meet the impending challenges of water shortage and power generation. In his interaction with the workers, including foreign engineers, during his visit to the construction site of Dasu Dam, the prime minister expressed satisfaction over the pace of ongoing work and lauded their efforts towards completion of the project. The prime minister said completion of the Dasu Dam will ensure cheap and clean electricity and ease the burden on consumers. PM Imran said the project will usher in a new era of socioeconomic development in the country. He said that costly electricity triggers inflation in the country. “Our industry was growing 50 years ago when we had cheap electricity, thanks to Manga and Tarbela dams.” The prime minister added that cheap electricity will benefit industry the most. Phase-I of the Dasu Dam will

Do they want a government in which people are known not by their names but by the dirtiest scandals in the history of this country?” According to a report by Dawn, Azhar said that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf had come into power after being elected, adding that it had not “threatened or bribed its way into government”. Responding to Bilawal’s arguments on inflation and economic growth, Azhar said: “I looked at the data to see why he [Bilawal] was so hurt talking about 4pc economic growth. Turns out that in their [PPP’s] five years of governance, there was not a single year where they achieved 4 percent growth.” “Some people were only getting stipends [from BISP] due to their affiliation with the PPP,” Azhar said, adding that the chairperson of the said programme had recently been declared a proclaimed offender.
