a

day after Lahore Capital City Police officer (CCPo) umar Sheikh made comments regarding the motorway gangrape incident, which were viewed as victim-blaming, public and political figures alike have demanded his removal. During a television interview, the CCPo had blamed the victim for travelling late at night and for taking the motorway instead of GT Road. Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has demanded the removal of umar Sheikh from his position as a “women’s dignity is not safe as long as this CCPo is in office”. The comment was made by party spokesperson Marriyum Aurangzeb while

addressing a press conference in the federal capital on Friday. She added that the CCPo should receive as severe a punishment as the rapists and that his

focus should have been on why the police were not there to help the woman. Meanwhile, Planning Minister Asad umar and Adviser to the Prime Minister

on Accountability and Interior Shahzad Akbar both came to the defence of the CCPo, saying that the statement had been misconstrued. Leader of the opposition in the National Assembly (NA) Shehbaz Sharif lashed out at the government ministers and Punjab chief minister, who he said “rushed to support and implicitly justify the conduct of a police official”. “How can they govern when they do not have the ability to identify a problem?” he asked. Marriyum also criticised the government for their silence on the matter. “Police seem to be in confusion over jurisdiction,” she said. “The entire government, as well as the prime minister, is silent on this atrocity. The government has failed to ensure the protection of Pakistani citizens.” Her statements were rebuked by Minister for Human Rights Shireen Mazari,

who denounced the CCPo’s comments. Shireen defended the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) minister, saying, “Asad umar defended my statement [… ] Shahzad Akbar categorically conveyed the entire federal cabinet’s strong displeasure at CCPo’s statement. No one in PTI defended indefensible statement of CCPo. IG has taken note and action also against CCPo.” Furthermore, Akbar said on a local news station that “the CCPo has been warned against making such remarks in the future”. However, Shireen’s comments come after Akbar had earlier said “an unneeded controversy was created out of the CCPo’s earlier statement” and Asad had remarked that the officer had “not said anything illegal” when replying to calls for the CCPo’s removal.
