Senior vice preSident will be from ppp, while pml-n and other partieS will be given poStS of deputy Secretary generalS "pdm has expressed great confidence in the leadership of fazlur rehman," said the pml-n stalwart. "pdm's struggle is to ensure that the constitution and the supremacy of law are upheld and the people's economic rights are protected.” the movement's goal is to achieve that form of government that was the vision of Quaid-e-azam, he said. at the apc on September 20, the opposition parties upped the ante against the ptiled federal government as they demanded the immediate resignation of prime minister imran khan and announced the formation of the pdm to begin a countrywide protest campaign. during the ppp-hosted confab, the opposition also ratcheted up its narrative against alleged rigging in the july 2018 general election and demanded that the powerful military establishment should not only refrain itself from interfering in politics but also confine to its role as defined in the constitution. through a 26-point resolution and a sevenpoint action plan issued after the apc, the opposition put forward its demands, including free, fair, transparent elections without having any role of the armed forces and agencies. meanwhile, reacting to the decision, Science and technology minister fawad chaudhry termed fazl’s appointment as pdm head a “sad day” for pakistan, saying: “an extremist mullah [cleric] considered close to terrorist groups of afghanistan is selected to lead opposition movement against the government”. taking to twitter, he further added that unlike india where “extremists” are in the government, people of pakistan have never allowed them to come into power or mainstream politics.

pml-n in a fix over strategy to stop rebellion within ranks ISLAMABAD MIAN ABRAR

pakistan muslim leaguenawaz (pml-n) leadership is in a fix over its decision to expel its five members of provincial assembly (mpas) of punjab who had recently met with the chief minister usman buzdar "in violation of the party discipline". though party’s secretarygeneral, ahsan iqbal, is yet to formally send references against the five rebel lawmakers, party insiders say that the strict action had been taken only to stop more defections within the party cadres as the ruling pakistan tehreek-e-insaf (pti) leaders were contacting more lawmakers of the party, encouraging them to part ways from the opposition benches. the party leadership is in a fix to deal with the five rebel lawmakers who are likely to be issued show cause notices only, while no reference is likely to be sent to the election commission of pakistan (ecp) due to lack of evidence. pml-n’s legal team has informed the party leadership that defection clause cannot be invoked against rebels as they didn’t cross

India opens tunnel route to tense China border NEW DELHI AGENCIES

india’s prime minister narendra modi on Saturday opened a himalayan tunnel that will drastically reduce the time needed to rush troops to the country’s remote chinese border as tensions grow between the asian neighbours. the tunnel traverses india’s northern himachal pradesh state and lies on one of two main routes for troops headed to border areas in ladakh. 20 indian troops were killed in june during a deadly clash in ladakh, which shares a disputed boundary with china’s restive Xinjiang and tibet regions. the two nuclear-armed countries have since rushed tens of thousands of additional troops and weapons to the area, and have been locked in a tense stand-off for months. the $400-million, nine-kilometre (six miles) tunnel will cut the journey by about 50 kilometres (30 miles) and four hours, enabling travellers to bypass a tricky route across a landslide-prone himalayan pass. the tunnel, at an altitude of more than 3,000 metres (10,000 feet), has been hailed as a feat

floor by meeting cm buzdar. a source in the biggest opposition party told pakistan today that the party was reviewing its options over its earlier decision to expel its five mpas from the party as meeting the chief minister did not fall under the defection clause invoked against the rebel mpas. “you know there was a group of around 15 lawmakers of punjab assembly who had also met the cm few months back. we fear another similar attempt as there are potential deserters among us. So, the party leadership has taken a strong stance to help stop the rebellion,” the source said. the source added that the challenge posed to the pml-n was even bigger as this attempt is now being made by not only the ruling party but other influential players may also be active to split the party. “pml-Q is active as well and chaudhrys of gujrat are trying their best to lure our party lawmakers. Since central punjab is our stronghold, we fear desertions in northern and southern punjab,” the source said.

of engineering. a decade in the making, freezing temperatures and the challenging terrain meant construction work could only be carried out for about six months each year. the project is part of new delhi’s push to catch up with chinese infrastructure development on the other side of the border. in the last six years, modi’s government has expedited several frontier projects including roads, bridges and high-altitude airstrips. “we have put our entire energy in developing our border infrastructure. the country hasn’t

seen roads, bridges and tunnels built at this scale,” the prime minister said after inaugurating the tunnel Saturday. “besides locals, this (infrastructure) will also hugely benefit the men and women in our army,” modi added. new delhi hopes such projects will promote tourism and spur economic activity. Sanjay kundu, the police chief of himachal pradesh — which shares a long border with tibet — recently proposed better roads and mobile connectivity as well as even arms training for the state’s border villages.
