T least nine Pakistani nationals from Punjab province were killed and three others critically injured in an attack on a vehicle repair shop in the Sirkan area of Saravan City, located in Iran’s Sistan-Baluchistan Province, Iranian news agency The Qorasan Diary reported, citing Iranian and Pakistani officials as well as local media. The victims hailed from districts including Multan, Muzaffaragarh, and Bahawalpur, according to initial reports. The armed assailants responsible for the attack remain unidentified. Pakistan’s Ambassador to Iran, Muhammad Mudassir Tipu, confirmed the tragic incident and urged Iran to extend full cooperation in the matter. In a statement posted on his social media handle, Ambassador Tipu expressed deep shock over the killings and assured
that the embassy would provide support to the bereaved families. He also mentioned that a counselor from Zahidan is en route to the incident site and the hospital where the injured are receiving treatment. Ambassador Tipu, who earlier in the day presented his credentials to Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi in a special ceremony held at the presidency, emphasised the desire to strengthen ties between the two nations. He underscored Pakistan’s commitment to elevating Pakistan-Iran relations to new heights. The attack comes amidst recent tensions between Pakistan and Iran, triggered by a series of incidents. On January 16, Iran conducted missile and drone strikes within Pakistan’s Balochistan province, purportedly targeting the terrorist group Jaish ul-Adl. Pakistan condemned the “violation of its airspace” and recalled its ambassador from Iran. In response, Pakistan launched a missile strike on a border village in Iran’s southeastern Sistan-
ECP carries out mock test of EMS ahead of Feb 8 polls ISLAMABAD
STAFF REPORT
While the February 8 polls are less than two weeks away, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) Saturday carried out a mock test of its Election Management System (EMS) with useful and encouraging results. The EMS, an automated and modern management system developed for tabulation of the election results, would be used by the ECP in the upcoming general elections to transmit and compile election results from presiding officers to returning officers. During the exercise involving Returning Officers’ (RO) offices at 859 locations across the country, as per the electoral body’s spokesperson, presiding officers were able to deliver results satisfactorily. The exercise saw the effective accomplishment of result transmission by presiding officers and subsequent compilation and tabulation by ROs without any issue, the spokesperson said, adding that if a presiding officer encounters difficulty in transmitting results to the RO via mobile phone, they are instructed to personally deliver the election results to the RO’s office. With the exercise involving fibre/DSL connectivity, EMS app log-in, usage, and the steps for results transmission and editing, the spokesperson acknowledged that the activity did face connectivity challenges causing minor issues in transmitting results to some presiding officers. However, the official said that the aforesaid connectivity issues are being promptly addressed. The development comes as elections in Pakistan have been marred with allegations of irregularities and rigging with political parties also raising questions on the ECP’s mechanism of transmitting, compiling and tabulating the poll results. During the 2018 general elections, the electoral body utilised its Results Transmission System (RTS) which, as per an ECP statement, suffered a “technical glitch” as it was being updated with election result data — leading to an overall delay in the announcement of poll results. The delay drew ire from political parties who have since then termed the polls as “RTS elections” — a political jibe against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) which triumphed in the 2018 general elections.
The Foreign Office (FO) on Saturday said it was in touch with Iranian authorities over the “horrifying and despicable” killing of Pakistani nationals by terrorists in the neighbouring country. Iran’s Mehr news agency reported earlier today that “according to witnesses, this morning unknown armed men killed nine non-Iranians in a house in the Sirkan neighbourhood of Saravan city” in the Sistan-Baluchistan province. The agency added that no group or individuals had claimed responsibility. The Baluch rights group Haalvash said on its website that the victims were Pakistani labourers, who lived at an auto repair shop where they worked. Three others were wounded, it said. A statement issued by FO spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch in response to media queries on the matter said: “It is a horrifying and despicable incident and we condemn it unequivocally. We are in touch with Iranian authorities and have underscored the need to immediately investigate the incident and hold to account those involved in this heinous crime.”

She said Pakistan’s consul in Zahedan was en route to the hospital where the injured were being treated and would reach in a “few hours due to long distances and security imperatives involved”. Baloch said the consul will also meet local authorities and “impress upon them the urgent need for strong action against the perpetrators of this crime”. “We are fully seized of this grave matter and are taking all necessary measures in this regard. The embassy will do its best to repatriate dead bodies at the earliest,” she said. “Such cowardly attacks cannot deter Pakistan from its determination to fight terrorism,” the FO spokesperson added. Interim Foreign Minister Jalil Abbas Jilani termed the incident as an “attempt to spoil relations between Pakistan and Iran by our common enemies”.

After a long wait, Pakistan Muslim League–Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif on Saturday launched the party’s ‘muchtalked-about’ manifesto on Saturday, reiterating the resolve to “fully implement” it if the party comes into power. The PML-N manifesto was launched at a gathering held in the party secretariat in Model Town. On the occasion, the former premier termed the country’s economy the most important aspect of PML-N’s manifesto. “It is painful to be expelled from the government, the mistakes must be known,” said Nawaz. “I do not want to go into the discussion of how RTS was closed, but if it had not been closed, we would have had a government at the Centre like in Punjab,” said the former PM. The PML-N supremo said he hoped people would read the party’s manifesto. “If I was there in the previous government instead of the person who you saw, I would have never done what he did,” said Nawaz about former premier Imran Khan. “The people of KP are easily fooled, as they voted for Imran
Khan,” said Nawaz. Nawaz vowed that if voted into power for the fourth time, the PML-N government would reduce power bills by 20 to 30 percent and provide “cheap and increased electricity” and increased development in the country. The manifesto also promises a massive job creation programme and easy-to-secure loans for establishing businesses. The party also plans to restore student unions in an attempt to win the youth’s favour, allocate funds for IT start-ups and expand the National Youth Scheme. ‘Key points of manifesto’ The manifesto outlines key priorities and commitments, with a strong emphasis on uplifting the agricultural sector and addressing climate change impacts.
One of the standout points in the manifesto is the commitment to elevate the status of farmers through agricultural innovation, aiming to shield the country from the adverse effects of climate change. The party envisions a comprehensive approach to tackle environmental challenges while promoting sustainable farming practices. The PML-N manifesto also highlights plans for constitutional, legal, judicial, and administrative reforms. Notably, it includes the restoration of Article 62/63 to its original state, emphasizing a commitment to constitutional integrity. Additionally, the manifesto signals the abolition of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) as part of broader institutional reforms.

Imran dubs cypher trial a ‘joke’ over appointment of state defence team ISLAMABAD
STAFF REPORT
6tr Deploring the appointment of state defence counsels in the cypher case, former prime minister Imran Khan on Saturday said the trial was nothing less than a “joke” because the prosecution and defence team both belonged to the government. “The prosecution team and defence counsels both belong to the government,” Imran said during the hearing today. “This is a joke.” An order of Friday’s hearing issued on Saturday stated that Malik Abdur Rehman was appointed as Imran’s state defence counsel while Hazrat Younis would defend former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi. Authored by Judge Abual Hasnaat Muhammad Zulqarnain, the order noted that the defence counsel on January 16 had agreed to conduct the cross-examinations but did not appear in the next two court hearings. “Despite several opportunities given to
the learned counsels for accused persons, this court is left with no choice but to appoint defense counsels for the accused persons to conduct cross-examination of the prosecution witnesses (PWs),” the order stated. “They will represent the case and will conduct cross-examination on the PWs. All the remaining PWs be summoned and the PWs present in court today are bound [..] to come up on Jan 27, 2024,” it added. The cipher case pertains to a diplomatic document that the Federal Investigation Agency’s charge sheet alleges was never returned by Imran. The PTI has long held that the document contained a threat from the United States to oust Imran as prime minister. Last year in December, Justice Miangul Hasan Aurangzeb had restrained the special court from proceeding against the suspects — including Qureshi — till Jan 11, noting that there were “legal errors” in the case. The decision had come on Imran’s petition challenging the trial — being conducted
at Adiala Jail — and subsequent developments, including the framing of charges and a gag order on the media. The special court had begun the cipher trial afresh last month at the Adiala district jail after Imran and Qureshi were indicted for a second time in the case on December 13. The former premier and Qureshi, who is also behind bars, were first indicted in the case in October. Both had pleaded not guilty. The IHC had termed the government’s notification for a jail trial “erroneous” and scrapped the entire proceedings. In December, the Supreme Court had approved the post-arrest bails of Imran and Qureshi. While Imran remains incarcerated in other cases, Qureshi’s expected release was also stalled as he was manhandled and re-arrested in a fresh May 9 case. Yesterday, the FIA prosecutor asked the special court to close the defence counsel’s right to cross-examination, alleging that the defence side was applying delaying tactics to prolong the trial.
