akiStan has decided to leave over 500 students stranded in coronavirus-hit Wuhan, a province in China, saying it won’t indulge in “irresponsible” behaviour by evacuating Pakistan nationals as this could lead to further spread of the deadly virus. Meanwhile, Pakistani nationals stranded in China have appealed to the government to save them. “We have to live on roads in urumqi after exhausting all our money on food and lodging,” Pakistanis stranded at urumqi airport said, imploring Prime Minister imran khan-led government for a helping hand. Separately, Pakistani students stranded in Wuhan shared a video, wherein said that they were having a hard time getting in touch with the Pakistani embassy and urged the government to help them. the health Ministry has confirmed at least four students have contracted the virus. ‘govt to heLP Stranded PakiStaniS’: in a press conference, Special assistant to the Prime Minister on health dr zafar Mirza said that it was not advisable to evac-

uate Pakistanis from China and added that same was the guidelines of the World health organisation (Who) and Beijing. it may be noted here that a number of countries, including the uS, Japan and South korea, have evacuated their citizens, whereas Britain and india are also preparing to extract their citizens from the calamity-hit province. “We don’t want to take any emotional decision which will cause this virus to spread further,” he said, adding, “it is also our responsibility to ensure that our citizens in Wuhan are being properly taken care of and see to it whether they are being provided food or items of daily use or not,” he added. dr Mirza said the Pakistani embassy in China was providing the government with information about its citizen in Wuhan. he said that it was in the “larger interest of the region” to not evacuate Pakistanis who were stranded in Wuhan and at risk of contracting the coronavirus. “this [decision not to evacuate Pakistanis] is what the Who is saying and this is what China’s policy is,” he said. “this is also our policy.” dr Mirza said that the government will ensure proper checks to keep the coronavirus from spreading when “the situation
improves”. he said the government will ensure proper screening at entry, exit points of the country and place under observation those who are at risk of carrying the virus. dr Mirza said that the government’s decision not to evacuate its people from Wuhan did not mean that it didn’t care about Pakistani citizens. he said that islamabad was abreast of the facilities being provided to Pakistani citizens in Wuhan. “i can show you many messages from Pakistani students in Wuhan who have told us that Chinese authorities are taking very good care of them,” he said. BODY FOR MONITORING EPIDEMIC: the federal government on thursday constituted a technical committee to monitor the situation and make immediate plans to prevent the spread of coronavirus in Pakistan. according to an official of the health Ministry, the national institute of health (nih) has also activated its emergency operations center to monitor the situation. it has also been called for close coordination among Central health establishment, World health organization (Who) and provincial health departments for a comprehensive control programme. the official said directives have also been issued to nih’s virology lab to develop a real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction capacity for coronavirus as early as possible. nih has already developed health education and information material for healthcare staff, passengers and the general public in this regard.
