On 16th December 2014, seven terrorists armed with automatic rifles and grenades, stormed the Army Public School in Peshawar, Pakistan, killing 132 children and 8 school staff - an attack that shook the entire nation No attempt was made to take hostages. Their sole purpose was to kill as many children as they could. All terrorists were killed, and 960 children were rescued as a result of a rescue operation by the Pakistan Army.
The attack was claimed by Tarik Gidar Group, an affiliated group of Tehrik-iTaliban (TTP) terrorist group. Both entities have been listed by the 1267 sanctions committee of the United Nations Security Council.
A national consensus emerged in the aftermath of this attack to combat terrorism through a National Action Plan that was adopted on 24th December 2014 by the National Parliament.
The Permanent Mission of Pakistan to the United Nations held a commemorative event of the attack on its 8th anniversary at the United Nations Headquarters on 16th December 2022
“It is befitting that we hold this event on the APS school attack as part of the programme of the UN’s Office of Counter-Terrorism on “Remembrance of the Victims of Terrorism”. This terrorist attack was particularly heinous because the clear aim of the terrorists was to kill children. In this sense it was a targeted attack designed to deal a grievous blow to the morale of the people of Pakistan."
