Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi addressing the High Level Replenishment Conference For the UN Secretary General’s Peacebuilding Fund (PBF)

Foreign Minister Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi has urged the United Nations to address the root causes of conflicts including injustice, inequality and the suppression of the right of self-determination of peoples under foreign occupation, in order to build and sustain global peace. The Foreign Minister made these remarks during the virtual High-Level Replenishment Conference of the UN Peacebuilding Fund (PBF) convened by Secretary General Antonio Guterres on 26 January 2021. PBF is the United Nations’ financial instrument of first resort to sustain peace in countries at risk or affected by violent conflict.

In his video statement, the Foreign Minister underscored Pakistan’s longstanding commitment to UN’s endeavors for peacekeeping and peacebuilding, recalling that over the last 60 years Pakistani troops and police had represented the UN in 46 peacekeeping missions across 4 continents of the world. He also announced a financial pledge as part of Pakistan’s contribution to PBF.

The Foreign Minister stressed that ‘national ownership’ must remain the core principle of peacebuilding and should determine all investment decisions of the PBF. He noted that a major handicap for the developing countries in mobilizing international investment was their inability to prepare commercially viable development projects. To address this issue, he recommended that the resources of the PBF be utilized to support these countries in bringing development projects to a bankable feasibility status. He further suggested that investment for such projects could be sought from other public and private sources, including Multilateral Development Banks as well as Private Equity and Sovereign Wealth Funds.

The High-Level Replenishment Conference took into account the UN Secretary General’s call for a ‘concrete increase’ in financial commitments to support conflict prevention and peacebuilding around the world.

FOREIGN MINISTER SHAH MAHMOOD QURESHI ADDRESSED AT THE REIMAGINING EQUALITY: ELIMINATING RACISM, XENOPHOBIA & DISCRIMINATION FOR ALL IN THE DECADE OF ACTION FOR THE SDGS

The Foreign Minister addressed a special meeting of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) on “Reimagining Equality: Eliminating Racism, Xenophobia and Discrimination for all in the Decade of Action for SDGs”, held in a virtual format.

In his video message, the Foreign Minister underscored that reducing systematic inequality and eliminating racism, including its contemporary manifestations, were at the heart of the UN Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development. Noting that the COVID-19 pandemic had disproportionately impacted minorities, making them more vulnerable to extreme poverty and unemployment, as well as higher rates of infection and mortality, the Foreign Minister urged the international community to address the structural drivers of discrimination, including those rooted in the history and legacy of colonialism.

With reference to Pakistan’s neighbourhood, the Foreign Minister highlighted that the hateful political rhetoric and incitement to violence against vulnerable ethnic and religious groups had resulted in discriminatory citizenship laws, attacks on places of worship and repeated state-sponsored pogroms against minorities, in addition to the brutal occupation and suppression of peoples struggling for their right to selfdetermination. The Foreign Minister called upon the international community to recommit to upholding the fundamental principles of human rights and guaranteeing substantive equality for all. He also proposed, inter alia, the forging of a global alliance against the rise and spread of Islamophobic as well as other violent nationalist and racist groups.

The special meeting was convened under Pakistan’s Presidency of ECOSOC, and was aimed at addressing the linkage between structural racism, discrimination, inequalities and the pursuit of the Sustainable Development Goals – with a special focus on building those inter-linkages that help in a better response to the COVID-19 pandemic and its impacts.

FOURTH SESSION OF THE INTERGOVERNMENTAL GROUP OF EXPERTS ON FINANCING FOR DEVELOPMENT: SESSION 5 TOWARDS A MORE COHERENT AND CONSISTENT MULTILATERAL SYSTEM: PRIORITY POLICY PROPOSALS

The UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) President, Ambassador Munir Akram of Pakistan, has renewed his call for ensuring equitable access and distribution of the coronavirus vaccine, saying it was “vital” to control the deadly pandemic and for quick recovery of the virus-hit world economy.

“If the vaccine is not available through a large part of the developing world, the virus will roam and return, triggering periodic shutdowns,” he said, while pointing out that it would further impede the economic recovery in the developing countries and slow down the global recovery.

In a virtual address to a session of the Geneva-based Intergovernmental Group of Experts on Financing for Development, Ambassador Akram stressed the need for fully supporting the COVAX Facility for vaccine distribution by funding the 20 billion shortfall as soon as possible.

The fourth session on “Financing for Development: Towards a more coherent and consistent multilateral system: Priority policy proposals” was organized by the Pakistan Mission to the U.N. in Geneva, presided over by Ambassador Khalil Hashmi.

SDG Media Compact-Press Briefing 9th - February-2021

The briefing was conducted by the ‘SDG Media Compact’, an initiative marking a new drive to advance awareness of the anti-poverty global goal.

The ECOSOC President said that funding could come from public and private sector, debt relief and restructuring and additional liquidity through new and redistributed Special Drawing Rights (SDRs).

Ambassador Akram said that there was also the need for redressing the structural inequalities which have led the world into the current and previous financial and economic crises.

29 March 2021 The President of UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), Pakistan’s Ambassador Munir Akram, has called for the extension of Group of 20’s (industrialized countries) Debt Suspension Initiative ( DSSI) beyond June to enable developing countries recover from the devastation left behind by the deadly coronavirus pandemic. He recommended expansion of the G20’s move to cover the most vulnerable countries, including some of the small island developing countries.

He emphasized that several possible mechanisms for debt relief and restructuring including debt deferral, debt buyout, and debt swaps — which have been identified — should be implemented, with the participation of private creditors, who hold the vast majority of developing country.

She told the session that Pakistan firmly believes that economic growth, sustainable development, peace and prosperity can only be achieved through women empowerment and gender equality.

Munir Akram, President of the Economic and Social Council and Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the United Nations, addresses the opening of the sixty-fifth session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW65).

The sixty-fifth session of the Commission on the Status of Women will take place from 15 to 26 March 2021 under the theme "Women's full and effective participation and decision-making in public life and the empowerment of women and girls".
