Cemeteries as Spaces For Nature

Lancaster PA - Fall 2020 - 4 weeks

The purpose of this project is to increase public access to cemeteries. By rethinking creatively about cemeteries there are opportunities to add a significant amount of open space to the neighborhood in Lancaster PA.

Planter Forest + Natural Organic Reduction

The process creates soil and saves an estimated one metric ton of carbon per person compared to a traditional burial. This soil can placed in one of the permeable ceramic planters to flourish in the forest.

Green park space is very limited in the SE quadrant due to the density and the large cemeteries that take up 21% of all landuse in the city.

Greenwood Cemetery redesign integrates converted paths for biking and running alongside existing roads, with the addition of a riverside trail through a planter forest.

Rhode Island Living Reef

Charlestown

RI - Spring 2023 - 6 weeks

For this project, I collaborated with Annette Gill, a research professor of ocean engineering at the University of Rhode Island, to design a living reef off the coast of Charlestown, Rhode Island. By reducing beach erosion and wave energy, this reef will protect the shoreline.
