46th Annual Sale

Welcome to our on-property sale, this year marks 59 years of breeding registered Poll Dorsets and 11 years since the establishment of the Southdown stud. We have been investing in genomic DNA profiling in both the Poll Dorsets and Southdowns and incorporating these genomic profiles into the Sheep Genetics genetic evaluations for the calculations of genetically enchanced breeding values. We are continuing to improve and focus on our breeding goals and these tools have helped us in our joining decisions. Along with this and raw data, we keep the important visual traits of an animal, and we are proud to be offering you another great lineup in our 2025 sale.

Specially Selected & Feature Rams & Stud Southdown Ewes

The Poll Dorset & Southdown ram offering and are nominated by Shellal as potential stud sires, they are all 50K DNA genomic tested and Sire Verifed (SV) for your breeding assurance. The Poll Dorset specially selected rams meet all the current required regulations of the APDA 4 generation for Stud registration and transfer if needed. The Featured Southdown ramsare all NN Gaucher negative and AA cold tolerance which is only relevant in a pure breeding program. Alternatively any of these rams are a great opportunity to be used in a commercial prime lamb flock and are the tops of our ram drop. All the Southdown stud ewes on offer have also been DNA sire verified.

Registration & Stud Ram Transfers

Our Specially Selected and Feature rams are sold with 100% semen rights to the purchaser. Ram transfer condition on rams in this catalogue requiring registration and transfer into a stud will need to notify intention be shown at fall of hammer. Base Price for registration and transfer is $2500.

Animal Health

Animal Health: MN3V - Shellal is a voluntary SheepMAP participant flock, and our sheep flock biosecurity is audited every 12 months by an official SheepMAP veterinarian and monitored daily by ourselves to preserve our future. We hold the market assurance of MN3V (highest level of OJD free assurance), and we can trade into all Australian states and territories.

SheepMAP Certificate Number VS1129 • Brucellosis Accreditation Number 3270 All Rams have had their Full Annual Vaccinations – Zoetis GlanEry B12 7 in 1 @ 4-6 weeks and again at weaning and Zoetis GlanEry B12 7 in 1 in February 2025 & July 2025 (booster due before you put your rams out for joining).

LAMBPLAN

All our stud stock are weighed at birth, weaning and again weighed and scanned between 14-24 weeks of age for submission to Sheep Genetics which is a relevant age for the prime lamb industry. We are seedstock breeders with a commercial attitude, we want our clients to have a more comparable result from us scanning and weighing at a age when its relevant to the lamb industry. Please note that we use a trained, and independent and industry Accredited & Approved Sheep Genetics Scanner.

ASBV’s Explained

TCP Terminal Carcase Production – This Index replaces Carcase +, Carcase + was retired in March 2020 and is an obsolete Index.

TCP is for a prime lamb production system where terminal sires are joined to ewes of Merino/Maternal breeds or Crossbreeds. This index concentrates on increasing weight and muscle while reducing carcase fat. TCP also has emphasis on modest improvements in eating quality.

LEQ Lamb Eating Quality – This Index is for prime lamb operations where terminal sires are joined to Merino/Maternal breeds or Crossbreeds in either a high rainfall or high input management systems where internal parasites may cause significant economic losses.

Producers who select this index can improve the eating quality of their lambs to a greater degree than possible using the TCP alone whilst growth and carcase traits will still improve. We choose to use the LEQ Index rather than the EQ in our sale catalogue due to our environment and high rainfall.

LMY Lean Meat Yield: Is the proportion of carcase that is meat (muscle) excluding bone and fat, expressed as % (LMY) so that it is independent of variation of carcase weight, and is a key indicator of carcase efficiency in an animal. The quality of lean meat recovered from a carcase is the KEY PROFIT DRIVER and LMY is a way of measuring and comparing the meat yield of carcases. LMY is a heritable trait. LMY is an important trait in the lamb industry.

BWT Birthweight: Lower birthweight will produce lower birthweight lambs. Actual lamb bwt’s can also be influenced by environment and feed.

PWT Post Weaning Weight: a higher value should produce faster growing progeny

PEMD Post Weaning Eye Muscle Depth: a more positive value will produce lambs with more muscle especially in the high value loin and hindquarter areas, with a visually better overall carcase shape.

PFAT Post Weaning Fat: the more negative the leaner the progeny – look at LMY

For many commercial producers, BETTER GROWTH is vital, and Rams should have + EBV’s for weight (All the Shellal Rams are +).

ALL INDEXES ARE A GUIDE ONLY

Indexes are designed to help meet different breeding goals and programs and are simply a guide to aid in this selection. Producers should also consider their own breeding ewes, their environment and their target market. ASBV’s cannot be expressed as raw data because any raw data measurements are only relevant to the age ofan individual lamb/sheep, feed available or feed diets and environments they each experience. We do not scan sale rams for raw data in the weeks prior to auction due to its irrelevance to the prime lamb industry.

SHELLAL MEMO OF SIRES

Ivadene 100010

Used AI. Born and raised a triplet, all 3 rams went on to be stud rams and the two other triplets sold to LSK stud and Kentish Downs. 10 was Purchased by Bundara Downs Stud, SA. This ram was used in our stud for his structural soundness and huge muscling. A moderate ram which would added a nice line of outside genetics. He has clicked very well within our stud.

Bundara Downs 170180

Used AI. We have used this particular ram in our AI program over a couple of years. He is a powerful sire and this has bred on in his sons. A ram with great width of loin, excellent bone and strong outlook.

Shellal 200081

A son of BD 180, retained for his balance, thickness, muscling and outlook. The ram has a very deep round hindquarter and depth of body. Was identified early as a keeper and he just kept improving and never looking back. A wonderful natured ram with good doing ability.

Shellal 200069

A son of BD 180, born a twin to a ewe, 69 is a proud and stylish ram that demands your attention, retained for his body shape, muscle and thickness. He has bred extremely well for us here and we keep giving him more ewes to serve as gets older due to the great progeny he is leaving.

Rangeview 200151

Used AI. A very correct, moderate ram with good wool and muscling through the loin and hindquarter. Sold to Pinewalla Stud NSW for $13,250. The rams twin sister has also bred on with a stud ram which sold at the Australasian Dorset Championships for $5000 to the Dursley Stud, NSW. Memo kindly submitted by Will Millroy, Rangeview Stud Tasmania. At Shellal we have found 151’s progeny to have length and muscling with very good shoulders and front.

Fairbank 190843

Purchased from the Fairbank Stud, Tas in 2020 as an outside bloodline. This ram has bred very well for us leaving rams with great growth, muscling and length. Fairbank 190843 is a Gaucher negative ram (NN)
