INTRODUCTION Some of the most common fire hazards and causes of house fires, are candles setting the curtains alight.

Our textiles prevent the spread of fire as well as smoke development.

For years, flame retardant fabrics have been used in the public sector, as the safety requirements for textiles and curtains used in business interior decoration, are extraordinarily strict. When choosing textiles, safety should be the number one priority.

CERTIFIED TO OEKOTEX 100 STANDARD The majority of textiles are certified according to the Oekotex 100 standard, and in case of a fire, they only

produce gasses in tiny quantities. This is especially important, as it is often the smoke, not the fire, that kills during a housefire.

The high safety standards have been documented using tests and certifications complying with international standards. You will find the certification details on the product sheet.

INHERENT - OR COATED FR? THERE ARE TWO KINDS OF FLAME-RETARDANT FABRICS Permanently flame-retardant (inherent) and fabrics treated with a flame-retardant coating (coated). Which one will suit your specifications, depend on a number of factors.

The permanently flame-retardant fabrics are woven with fibres, who in and of themselves are flame-retardant, thereby providing a permanent protection, despite wash and wear; whereas the coated textiles will lose their flameretardant abilities with time, and will need to be treated again, in time. A treatment that is expensive economically as well as environmentally. If the curtains are subjected to

heavy wear and tear, or are not cleaned as per instructions, the frequency of the treatment will increase accordingly.

On the contrary, inherently flame-retardant fabrics are generally more expensive up front, compared to their coated counterparts, making the flame retardant coating a viable financial option for private homes, institutions, workplaces and businesses where the curtains are replaced frequently, or are subjected to less wear, tear and cleaning compared to e.g. the health sector.

The coated fabrics are also ascribed a softer and more pleasant feel, than the inherently flame-retardant curtains.

FR CERTIFICATIONS M1 AND B1 - TOP EUROPEAN CERTIFICATIONS M1/B1 is the European flame retardant standard for contract drapery. It is used across Europe so companies can ensure that the fabric and as such, the curtains sewn from it, are flame retardant and can be use safely, in a public and/or commercial environment. Locations that are required to use M1/B1 certified fabrics are hotels, care homes, schools, hospitals, etc. Depending on the country, the standards for flame retardant fabrics vary slightly.

As a rule of thumb, if the fabric is certified according to the M1 standard, it will almost certainly pass the B1 testing, as the M1 standard is more rigid, and its requirements are harder to meet. Though this must be double checked.

The French (M1) test procedure is almost equivalent to the German(B1) test. The material is arranged at an angle of 30° to the radiator and ignited by gas-flame. The difference is that the flame is directed to the fabric surface, rather than to the edges. The material is to burn for no longer than five seconds, keep its original size, and develop no droplets. Only then it will be certified as M1, which is highly valued worldwide.

M1 = French NFP92 503-505 M1. B1 = German DIN 4102 B1 EN 13773 - EUROPEAN STANDARD “TEXTILE BURNING BEHAVIOUR FOR CURTAINS” The test fabric is placed in a vertical metal frame. A propane gas flame is applied to the test sample. The test is performed as per the predefined scheme. Depending on the results, the fabrics are certified from class 1 to 5.

BS 5867 = BRITISH STANDARDS “FABRICS FOR CURTAINS AND DRAPES.” A test specimen is oriented vertically on a specimen holder. A small flame is applied to the face of the specimen.

NFPA 701 = AMERICAN STANDARDS “FABRICS FOR CURTAINS AND DRAPES.” A test sample is hung in this cabinet with a pin bar, and exposed to a flame. The after-flame of the test material and the burning time of the material that falls to the bottom of the cabinet are measured. The weight loss is also measured. The test material passes or fails the test. To pass, both the weight loss and the burn time have to be limited.

IMO/MED: THE HIGHEST STANDARD FOR FIRE-RETARDANT FABRICS This is the strictest FR standard that’s internationally recognised. IMO is short for International Maritime Organisation. The mission of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) as a United Nations specialised agency is to promote safe, secure, environmentally sound, efficient and sustainable shipping through cooperation. This will be accomplished by adopting the highest practicable standards of maritime safety and security. Certification requires that the product (in our case, our fabrics) must pass the following fire safety standards, tested in an accredited IMO/MED laboratory​: IMO FTPC P7 (textiles) IMO FTPC P8 (upholstered furniture). Only inherent fabrics can gain this certification.

CIGARETTE TESTS - CAL117, NFPA260, EN1021, BS5258, BS7176 The test fabric is put on a chair simulation and is exposed to a burning cigarette. For example: a lit cigarette is placed in the angle of the test rig, and left to smoulder until it’s completely burnt out. After 60 minutes, no smouldering or flaming of the fabric should be observed.

ACOUSTICS LOWER THE NOISE In many workplaces and publicly available spaces, the noise levels are typically unnecessarily high. It has been scientifically proven, that permanent background noises affect our performance levels negatively and lower the general sense of wellbeing. TESTED AND CERTIFIED Our acoustic curtains are tested and certified according to the ISO 354 standard, but even those of our curtains who have not been certified as acoustic curtains, contribute to a more comfortable soundscape at your work place.

The reason for this, is that the sound waves, that would otherwise be reflected back and forth between the bare walls and hard and smooth surfaces of the windows, are absorbed and interrupted by the soft, wavy and textured surface of the curtain fabric.

BEAUTIFUL AND FLEXIBLE ROOMDIVIDERS The modern workplace is ever changing, and teams are not set in stone like they used to be. Everything is projectoriented, so your workplace should be as well. That is one of the reasons why open office spaces have become so

popular. Use curtains as sculptural and informal room dividers, to create temporary, project-oriented workspaces, that can easily be drawn back when the project is finished, and another project with a different constellation of skills begins.

THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE SOUND WAVES When you are working to improve the acoustic of the workspace, it is important to know which frequencies that pose a problem. If it is the high-level frequencies you have to focus on the ceilings, if it is the low frequencies you have to focus on the flooring, and if it is the frequencies in the middle, that encompass, among other things, voices and the general noises found in an office environment, you have to focus on interrupting the waves bouncing of the walls. This can be done by using curtains. The certified acoustic curtains do this the best, but even normal curtains absorb sound waves better that bare walls and massive window sections.

RECYCLED - THE SUSTAINABLE CHOICE The production of recycled polyester uses a third of the energy, and 90 % less water, than the production of regular polyester. Recycled polyester has the strength and longevity of conventional polyester, but a much lower environmental impact.
