à leur époque furent «possédés» par le rythme lancinant du «salegy» de la grande île … c’est pour cette raison que je leur rends hommage car ils ont de fait oeuvré pour le patrimoine musical de Madagascar.

Pour que le voyage soit complet, le second volet, «Sculptures with GAD» (disc 2) est une succession de pistes sonores que nous nous sommes inventées avec Georges Alain Duriot (MC, artiste, peintre, musicien), qui a co-signé et monté les titres de «Sculptures» (hors du titre 4) pour en faire un hymne au temps et au tempo, tout en jouant sur une certaine destructuration de ces rythmes! Rémy Pinault, ingénieur du son est revenu d’un voyage en Inde et nous avons co-écrit «VaranasiTana» avec en filigrane quelques échantillons de sons ramenés de là bas qui ont épicé notre route commune.

Merci à Peter et Odile Finger d’avoir fortement encouragé mon imagination musicale à s’exprimer sans aucune limite au fil de ce double album, que j’ai également complété avec deux de mes plus proches complices musicaux de Dordogne en France: Georges Alain Duriot et Rémy Pinault.

J’ai imagé «sonorement» le voyage suivant: commencer par «Solonaïves» (disc 1), une suite de compositions basées sur des rythmes de Madagascar, cette île où j’ai vécu et qui sera le fil conducteur du voyage de guitare et vocal dans lequel je souhaite vous emmener. La première partie de ce projet, «Solonaïves» m’a été inspirée par deux artistes majeurs issus de la tradition musicale malgache: Rakotozafy, joueur de «valiha harpe» qui murmurait souvent les mélodies sans un chant réel ou appuyé. Egalement Freddy Ranarison – guitariste électrique, au style unique et reconnaissable – que j’ai connu de son vivant ayant fait partie de son orchestre «Point Rouge» dans les années 70. Ces deux musiciens, chacun

15) VaranasiTana La route des épices et des rythmes se croisent ici, Rémy Pinault m’a ramené une séquence de tablas enregistrée lors de son voyage à Varanasi, séquence sur laquelle nous avons bâti ce voyage improbable, Varanasi – Tana-(narive).

To complete the journey, the second part “Sculptures with GAD” is an overdub of lines conceived by me and Georges Alain Duriot (MC, artist, painter, musician) who co-wrote and edited all the tracks on “Sculptures” with the exception of no. 4, successfully elevating them to a “hymn for time and tempo” while constantly deconstructing the rhythms. Sound engineer Rémy Pinault, just back from India, wrote “VaranasiTana” with me, using sounds which have flavoured our journey together ...

Many thanks to Peter and Odile Finger for encouraging me to express my musical imagination without limitations on this double album, which was completed by contributions from two of my closest musical colleagues, both from the Dordogne in France: Georges Alain Duriot and Rémy Pinault.

For this record, I “sonically” imagined the following journey: it starts with “Solonaïves” (disc 1), a suite influenced by the rhythms of Madagascar, the island that guides and inspires the guitar and voice throughout this musical voyage. The first part of this project “Solonaïves” was directly inspired by two major artists of the Malagasy tradition: Rakotozafy, a “valiha harp” player who often murmured melodies without a fixed or definite song, and Freddy Ranarison, this grandiose guitarist of the instantly recognizable Antananarivo style, who I knew in the 70s, when I was a member of his orchestra “Point Rouge”. Both these musicians in their time were “obsessed” by the island’s Salegy rhythms and I wanted to pay homage to
