Mit „Works” gewährt Peter Finger nun erstmals einen tiefen Einblick in sein musikalisches Schaffen. Dreizehn seiner besten und schönsten Stücke hat der Künstler in diesem Band vereint. Kompositionen, entstanden auf seinen Reisen, zu Hause oder im Studio. Musikalische Gedanken, Erfahrungen und Erlebnisse.

In den Einführungen zu jedem Stück erfahren wir viel über die Hintergründe ihrer Entstehung und viel über den Künstler selbst. So ist mit „Works“ ein sehr persönliches Werk entstanden, eine Art musikalische Autobiographie, auf deren Fortsetzung wir uns jetzt schon freuen.

Neben der sorgfältigen Darstellung aller Stücke in Notenschrift und Tabulatur mit Hinweisen zu Fingersätzen und Spielweise sind hier erstmals auch die Improvisationen notiert, um sie für andere Spieler nachvollziehbar und vor allem nachspielbar zu machen. So gewährt uns Finger einen bislang nicht dagewesenen Einblick in seine Kompositionen und seinen Zugang zur Musik.

Vorwort Die Ausdrucksmittel der Musik sind so vielfältig wie die Musik selbst. Musik kann zahlreiche Funktionen haben, die jedoch leicht auf einen gemeinsamen Nenner zu bringen sind: Ausdruck von Stimmungen und Emotionen. Hierzu können verschiedene Klangsprachen und Techniken dienen, wobei die Möglichkeiten des Ausdrucks in alle nur erdenklichen Richtungen gehen können. Parallelen dazu sind auch leicht in Literatur, Kunst oder Architektur zu erkennen. Das Grundgerüst einer Komposition muss stimmig sein, ähnlich wie die Statik in der Architektur oder die Grammatik der Literatur. Allerdings ist das Grundgerüst allein ziemlich langweilig.

Entscheidend ist, welche Klangsprache man wählt, ob diese der eigenen Persönlichkeit entspricht und wie viele Details in der Ausarbeitung stecken, ob man bekannte Klischees verwendet oder etwas Eigenes entwickelt. Der Weg, für den man sich entscheidet, hat viel zu tun mit Ernsthaftigkeit und Ehrlichkeit sich selbst gegenüber.

Die Musik in dieser Ausgabe ist eine Zusammenstellung von 13 Kompositionen, die zum größten Teil sehr persönliche Hintergründe haben und in einer Zeitspanne von rund 30 Jahren entstanden sind. Die Art der Kompositionen hat sich in dieser Zeit geändert. Ich greife jedoch auch heute immer wieder auf alte Ideen zurück, die ich irgendwann einmal notiert habe, die ich allerdings jetzt auf andere Weise ausarbeite.

Vor vielen Jahren habe ich mich auf eine bestimmte Gitarrenstimmung festgelegt, die zwar die gleichen Töne wie die Standardstimmung enthält, jedoch nicht in der gleichen Reihenfolge. Diese Stimmung ist E H E G A D, in der ich heute fast nur noch spiele.

Eine kleine Abwandlung davon ist die Stimmung D A E G A D, die ich für manche Stücke benutze.

Beide Stimmungen sind etwas gewöhnungsbedürftig, besonders wenn man so spielen möchte, wie in der gewohnten Standardstimmung. Außerdem sind sie überwiegend schwerer zu spielen als die Standardstimmung. Warum dann also umstimmen?

Entscheidend für mich ist die andere Denkweise beim Spielen, die zwangsläufig auch zu anderen, oft individuelleren Ideen führt. Und da Ideen die Grundlagen der Komposition sind und mein Hauptinteresse beim Komponieren liegt, war dieser Schritt naheliegend.

Die meisten meiner Kompositionen haben Improvisationsteile, die ich früher nie ausnotiert habe. Da ich aber viel Rückmeldung bekam von Gitarristen, die gerade an diesen Stellen wegen der fremden Stimmung scheiterten, habe ich mich entschlossen, nun alle Improvisationen ungefähr so auszunotieren, wie sie auf der beiliegenden CD enthalten sind.

Manche Stellen sind vielleicht nicht absolut exakt so notiert wie auf der CD gespielt. Die CD dient jedoch auch nur als Beispiel dafür, wie das Stück gemeint ist.

Tabulaturen sind ungenauer als Noten, jedoch immer dann für die Orientierung sinnvoll, wenn nicht die Standardstimmung benutzt wird. Wenn man nach Tabulaturen spielt, sollte man allerdings auch immer einen Blick in die Noten werfen, da dort wichtige Informationen wie Rhythmik enthalten sind.

Manchmal habe ich in den Noten kleine Hinweise für die rechte Hand gegeben, die, wenn ich sie in die Tabulaturen geschrieben hätte, evtl. für Verwirrung sorgen würden. So gibt es an schwierigen Stellen gelegentlich in den Noten Angaben für die Zupfhand: p = Daumen, i = Zeigefinger, m = Mittelfinger, a = Ringfinger.

Ein Blick in die Noten erleichtert außerdem den harmonischen Überblick. Akkordsymbole habe ich an den Stellen eingefügt, wo Akkorde gegriffen werden sollten. Die Akkordsymbole haben gelegentlich eine recht eigenwillige Bezeichnung, was am Einsatz von Leersaiten liegt, die als Stilmittel dienen und oft eine reizvolle Klangfarbe darstellen.

Introduction The means of musical expression are as varied as music itself. Music can have numerous different functions, but in the end they all have a single common denominator: to express moods and emotions.

Many different musical languages and techniques can serve this purpose and the expressive possibilities involved can go in every conceivable direction.

Clear parallels are readily apparent in literature, art or architecture. The basic framework of a composition needs to reflect a certain inner coherence, which serves a similar function to the laws of statics in architecture or that of grammar in literature.

However, on its own the basic framework can be a little boring. The crucial points in fleshing it out are the choice of musical language and the extent to which this reflects the personality of the composer, the degree of detail to which it is elaborated and the question of whether one employs familiar clichés or tries to develop something of one’s own. The path one decides to take has a great deal to do with how serious and honest one is towards oneself.

The music in this edition is a compilation of 13 compositions, most of them with a deeply personal background. They originated over a period of about 30 years, during which time my approach to composing has changed considerably. When I find myself returning to old ideas today, to things which I once noted down or recorded, I cannot do otherwise than interpret them differently now.

Many years ago I committed myself to using a specific guitar tuning containing the same notes as standard tuning, but in a different order: E B E G A D. Today I play almost exclusively in this tuning. For some pieces I may use a variation on it: D A E G A D. Both of these tunings take some getting used to, especially if you try to play them in the same way as standard tuning. They are also generally more difficult to play than standard tuning. So why bother to retune the guitar? The deciding factor for me is the different way of thinking which these tunings demand from the player, which of necessity leads to different and often more individual ideas. As ideas are the basis of composition and my main interest is in composing, it seemed natural to take this step.

Most of my compositions contain improvised sections, which I never used to notate in the past.

However, the extensive feedback I’ve received from other guitarists, who get into difficulties at such points due to the unfamiliar tuning, made me decide to notate all the improvisations as closely as possible to how they’re played on the accompanying CD. In some places the notation may not exactly correspond to what I played on the recording, but in the end the CD is also just one example of how the pieces could have turned out.

Tablature is less exact than musical notation, but it’s very helpful as orientation with non-standard tunings. If you play using the tabs, it’s a good idea to also cast a glance at the notation, as this contains important information regarding rhythm and timing.

Sometimes I’ve included little tips for the right hand there which could have been confusing if I’d put them in the tabs. In difficult passages you’ll occasionally find fingerings for the picking hand: p = thumb, i = index finger, m = middle finger, a = ring finger. Taking a look at the notation will also make it easier for you to get an overview of the harmonic structure. I’ve included chord symbols at the points where actual chords are meant to be played, but their designation is sometimes rather unconventional due to the use of open strings, which serve as a stylistic device and often provide attractive tonal colours.

Come to my Window (1994) Es war im Jahr 1994. Ich war auf Tour in den USA und hatte ein paar freie Tage, die ich bei meinem Freund Dean Magraw in St. Paul, Minnesota verbrachte.

Lange hatte ich mich darauf gefreut, denn ich wollte mich ein wenig mehr in den Jazz vertiefen und selbst ein Jazzstück schreiben. Und wo ginge das wohl besser als im Land des Jazz, noch dazu im Haus eines begnadeten Jazzgitarristen. Ich hatte mein eigenes Zimmer und ein paar Tage Zeit, mich von morgens bis abends inspirieren zu lassen. Eine erste Idee war da. Aber immer wieder zog mich eine unsichtbare Kraft in eine andere Richtung. Als ich aus meinem Fenster schaute, hatte ich Lust, in ein Straßencafé zu gehen, konnte es fast sehen und stellte mir vor, wie viel schöner ein solches Straßencafé in Paris ist als ein McDonalds in St.Paul ...

Wenig später hatte ich mein Stück fertig geschrieben. Es hatte nichts mit Jazz zu tun und erinnert mich noch heute an das imaginäre Straßencafé in Paris.

Es empfiehlt sich, beim Nachspielen auch in die Noten zu sehen. Einige Melodienoten werden mit dem Daumen angeschlagen (z. B. Takt 6), andere mit Zeige-, Mittel- oder Ringfinger. Anders wird es schwer zu spielen sein.

It was in 1994. I was on tour in the USA and had a couple of days off, which I spent at the home of my friend Dean Magraw in St. Paul, Minnesota. I had been looking forward to this visit for some time, as I’d wanted to delve a little deeper into jazz and also compose a jazz piece myself. What better place to do this than in the homeland of jazz, while staying at the house of an exceptionally gifted jazz guitarist? I had my own room and a couple of days with nothing to do but wait for inspiration to come to me. I even had a starting point. But again and again an invisible force seemed to be pulling me in another direction.

Looking out of my window I felt the powerful urge to go and sit in a street cafe. I could almost see it in front of me and couldn’t help thinking how much nicer a sidewalk cafe in Paris is than, say, a McDonalds in St. Paul ...

Shortly afterwards I finished writing my piece. It had nothing to do with jazz, but today it still reminds me of that imaginary street cafe in Paris.

It’s advisable to take a look at the notation when learning this. Some of the melody notes are picked with the thumb (e.g. in bar 6), others with the index, middle or ring fingers. It’s hard to play it otherwise.
