On this DVD Tim Sparks performs and explains techniques to play three Americana Roots Music classics, ‘What a Friend We Have in Jesus’, ‘I‘ll Fly Away’, and ‘The Mississippi Blues’. Along the way he also offers insights, tips and workshops on Fingerpicking Country Blues style.

These tunes are presented as intermediate-toadvanced level arrangements, but you can also begin with easy-to-play simple versions which are also included.

Tim Sparks has been redefining the acoustic guitar repertoire since he won the National Fingerpicking Championship in 1993, with a ground breaking arrangement of Tchaikovsky‘s Nutcracker Suite.

Vorwort What a Friend We Have in Jesus „What a Friend We Have in Jesus“ ist ein sehr populäres Stück aus der Welt des Gospels – und das weltweit. Unzählige Übersetzungen wurden zu diesem Stück geschrieben: so heißt das Lied z.B. in Indien „Yeshu kaisa dost pyara“. In Japan spielt man es unter dem Titel „Hoshi no Sekai“ oder „World of Stars“ gern und oft auf Hochzeiten.

Diese Version steht in einem Drop D-Tuning, und tritt in die Fußstapfen von Joseph Spence und Ry Cooder. Dem Thema des Stücks schließt sich eine Instrumentalfassung an. Die Country Riffs in dieser Version stammen aus den Wurzeln der Gospelmusik und sind in den letzten einhundert Jahren weiterentwickelt worden.

Auch an die Anfänger unter euch wurde gedacht, ihr findet deshalb auch stark vereinfachte Versionen des Stücks: zum einen als Akkord-Solo, zum anderen eine Version, die die Melodie mit einer simplen Basslinie vereint, die nur mit dem Daumen gespielt wird.

I’ll Fly Away Dieses Stück entstand 1929, Albert E. Brumley erdachte es beim Pflücken von Baumwolle – und heute ist es eines der beliebtesten Gospels überhaupt. Ein großes Revival erlebte „I’ll Fly Away“ vor einigen Jahren durch einen Film der CoenBrüder „Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?“.

Wie schon in „What a Friend We Have in Jesus“ wird die Gitarre erneut in Drop D gestimmt. Dem Hauptthema des Stückes folgt eine Instrumentalversion, danach eine Modulation hin zu G-Dur für das letzte Thema und den Schlussteil.

Ihr könnt aber auch mit einer einfach zu spielenden Version beginnen, die ihr ebenfalls vorfinden werdet.

The Mississippi Blues Alan Lomax war anno 1942 in den Südstaaten der USA unterwegs, um dort für die amerikanische Nationalbibliothek, dem Library of Congress, Volkslieder aufzuspüren und zu dokumentieren. Dabei traf er in Arkansas auf den Bluessänger William Brown, mit dem er vier Stücke aufnahm. Darunter war auch „The Mississippi Blues“ – heute ein Standardwerk aus dem Delta Blues Repertoire. „The Mississippi Blues“ ist ein außergewöhnlich abwechslungsreiches Stück für Sologitarre, von dem viele phantastische Aufnahmen existieren, beispielsweise von Stefan Grossman, Johnny Winters, Tokio Uchida oder Clive Carroll, um nur einige Namen zu nennen. Meine Version ist in Anlehnung an Versionen von Duck Baker und Roy Bookbinder enstanden.

Jede Strophe und jeder Turnaround in dieser Version ist eine neue Variation des Stückes. Ihr könnt es also als ganzes Set nehmen, oder auch nur einzelne Elemente dazu benutzen, um eure eigene Version zu kreieren.

Im Anschluss an den Mississippi Blues könnt ihr in einem Workshop lernen, wie ihr CountryBlues-Skalen mithilfe der Grundakkorde von G-ED-C-A spielt und sie auf den Gitarrenhals übertragt. Eine sehr leichte und doch gute Übung, um mithilfe des Blues das Griffbrett besser kennen zu lernen.

Introduction What a Friend We Have in Jesus “What a Friend We Have in Jesus” is a wellknown gospel tune dating from the 19th century.

Many verses in different languages have been written for this melody. In India, the hymn is sung as “Yeshu kaisa dost pyara”. There is also a popular version in Japan called “Hoshi no Sekai“ or “World of Stars“ which is often used for wedding ceremonies.

This version is set in Drop D tuning and is very much walking in the footsteps of Joseph Spence and Ry Cooder. After the theme there follows an instrumental variation using country blues riffs which have grown from the roots of the old gospel tradition over the past 100 years. You can also find simple versions presented here of the basic song for beginners, including both a chord solo and a melody combined with a simple thumb-picking bass line.

I’ll Fly Away The story goes that Albert E. Brumley was picking cotton in Oklahoma in 1929 when the inspiration came to him for “I’ll Fly Away”, a much performed and recorded gospel favorite. It had a big revival in recent years when featured in the Coen Brother’s movie, “Oh Brother Where Art Thou?”.

As with “What a Friend We Have in Jesus”, the tuning here is also in Drop D. There is the main theme followed by an instrumental variation then a modulation into the key of G for the last theme and ending. You can also begin by learning a simple, easy-to-play version that is presented here.

The Mississippi Blues Alan Lomax was traveling in the Southern United States collecting field recordings of folk music for the American Library of Congress in 1942 when he encountered a bluesman in Arkansas named William Brown, who recorded four songs, including “The Mississippi Blues”. This piece has become an enduring standard of the Delta Blues repertoire.

The Mississippi Blues is an amazingly inventive display of solo guitar counterpoint. There are many great versions of this tune by players such as Stefan Grossman, Johnny Winters, Tokio Uchida, and Clive Carroll, to name a few. This version was inspired by renditions I heard done

by Duck Baker and Roy Bookbinder.

Every verse and turnaround in this rendition is a different variation, so you can learn the whole thing as a set piece or use different elements to make your own version.

After “The Mississippi Blues” there is a workshop on voicing country blues scales in the first position chords of G-E-D-C-A and transposing them up the guitar neck. This is a very simple and useful study that uses the blues as a guide to learning the fretboard.
