Adventures in Architecture & Landscape

“Living in nature is a perennial source of life”
- H. D. Thoreau
A home is anywhere that brings nourishment and contentment.

“Architecture is brought alive by the play of light on materials”
- Le Corbusier
Light and landscape are part of the material palette that we work with. It is our attention to detail that makes a house a home.

“We sit in bed and watch deer, foxes and birds outside. We’re so delighted with it.”
- David & Jane, The Chestnut Farm

“We gave them a copy of a Modigiliani sketch as inspiration. It doesn’t have a superfluous line on it and our home is the same.”
- David & Jayne, The Chestnut Farm

“PAD studio’s concerns are with the psychology of human comfort as much as more quantifiable needs for heat, light and sound”
- Martin Pearce, Architecture Today: Ecotech

“With their combined passion, professionalism and detailed knowledge of planning in the New Forest we are now able to turn our sight of a forest home into a reality.“
- Alison & Martin, Moonstone & Lime

“Good architecture is like a good therapy session, a good marriage, a good poem - gently and almost invisibly allowing you to be you, as flawed and as beautiful as you are.”
- Robert Sullivan

“knowledgeable and full of inspiring and unusual ideas. Their thoughtfulness and calmness got us through and we now have a restful and fun family home in the forest that we love”
- Emi and Oscar, The Clay Retreat

“PAD studio guided us in the planning process, helped us with major decisions, externally and internally and travelled the journey with us, every step of the way. They have provided us with a gem, a small piece of paradise in the New Forest.”
- Cheryl & Andrew, The Water Tower

“We attended a New Forest National Park Green Open Day showcasing sustainable buildings across the New Forest. We fell in love with two of the buildings and the architect of both buildings was PAD studio.”
- Cheryl & Andrew, The Water Tower

“We really appreciated their collaborative style. PAD studio asked us what were the important aspects of a house for us: sitting lightly on the landscape, green credentials, plenty of internal light, a feeling of space, avoiding where at all possible cutting down existing trees. They designed for us a house which miraculously fulfilled these aspirations”
- Graham & Charlotte, The Gardener’s Cottage

“ Our feeling throughout was that the process was as important to them as it was to us and the proof of this is in a house which we love and where we feel completely at home.”
- Graham & Charlotte, The Gardeners Cottage

“Nothing is art if it does not come from nature.”
- Antoni Gaudi
An extension of the lake, the house hovers over the water like a dragonfly, almost touching the surface with its reaching terraces.

“For PAD studio the clarity of an architectural idea is imperative, and a simple concept rigorously carried through into every part of the design is enormously powerful. However, such an idea need not be overpowering when, as here, it can generate rich contrasting experiences that delight and intrigue.”
- Martin Pearce, Architecture Today: Ecotech

“ Architecture should aim to create harmony between human and natural elements.”
- Le Corbusier
Spaces are carved out from the stone ground floor reflective of the sites quarry history and creating thermal mass.

“Just
being surrounded by bountiful nature, rejuvenates and inspires us.“
– E O Wilson (Theory
of biophilia)
Through the adoption of several Biophilic principles, this Paragraph 84 house offers the owner both a complete refuge from and total immersion in the landscape and relates intimately to its site and wider setting.

“Each client expresses their own life philosophy we reflect their desire for light, space, simplicity and complexity.”
- Allan Murray, Director

“Architecture must have something that appeals to the human heart”
- Kenzo Tange
The home ‘collects ‘ the landscape to itself, bringing the two together in harmony

“Architecture is really about well-being. I think that people want to feel good in a space. On the one hand it’s about shelter, but it’s also about pleasure.”
– Zaha Hadid

“Architecture is not about form; it is about creating spaces that inspire emotions.”
- Luis Barragan
The landscape becomes an integral part of the home from expansive views to intimate courtyard gardens.

Each part of the house experiences a different sense of nature.
Each experience is part of the story of the landscape, a changing story.

“The
chief benefit of the house is that the house shelters daydreaming, the house protects the dreamer, the house allows one to dream in peace.”
- Gaston Bachelard
The physical barriers between inside and out are dissolved, Nature is invited in.

“Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication in architecture.”
– Luis Barragan
The house is calmness and serenity, bringing in light and nature.

“There
is nothing like the peace of the countryside, the quiet and lack of distraction. It helps focus the mind.”
- Jenny Nimmo
Growing up in the rolling hills of County Down Wendy Perring draws on the peace and tranquillity in landscape.

“We were very grateful for the collaborative approach adopted by PAD studio for each project. The achievements of both have created wonderful contemporary buildings that will just get better with age. This legacy is a lasting tribute to good architecture. We were very proud of our involvement in the journey.”
- Tim Moulding, R. Moulding & Co

“Buildings too are children of earth and sun.”
- Frank Lloyd Wright
To build under the earth is to absorb the ‘sky’. Designing the house that settles into its sensitive landscape, into the earth.

“I don’t believe architecture has to speak too much. It should remain silent and let nature in the guise sunlight and wind”
– Tadao Ando
The home feels like its a part of the earth, yet it is flooded with light and sunshine.

“The bridge gathers to itself in its own way earth and sky, divinities and mortals”
- Martin Heidegger
Straddling between two rock faces the house is in effect a bridge crossing the space. Accessed by a carved stairway in the rock reflective of the Nebataean roots.

“A truly great book should be read in youth, again in maturity and once more in old age, as a fine building should be seen by morning light, at noon and by moonlight.”
-Robertson Davies
Circularity in the whole structure means it can be dismantled and reused with the carved rock face the trace memory, a reflection of inhabitation of another time.

The Egg is both a physical home containing life and Metaphorical for the essence of life.
It is a house without foundations and a boat without a sail .

Grounded in People & Place
“Our clients are at the heart of everything we do, we listen, collaborate and inspire”
We create sustainable spaces and places that offer the chance to be, pause, reflect and grow. Places to retreat to, to be sheltered by. Places that nurture the soul. Places to commune with others. Beautiful places that offer a sense of wonder to all those who encounter and experience them. Places that give back and speak of the people and setting that they belong to – back in time and looking forward to the future.
Wendy Perring, Founder & Design Director

As sustainable contemporary B Corp certified architects, we have a diversity of experience gained through many years of practice and collaboration.
We have a wealth and breadth of experience in crafting sustainable architecture in sensitive locations and with complex strategies. Using our commitments of Question , Respect and Celebration to underpin our approach whether it is a private home, a public visitor centre or a commercial development.
Our adventures in architecture and landscape are journeys we take with our clients. Every time they challenge us to think of what a home is. Bringing us joy in each unique answer.
