DEVELOPMENT COORDINATOR The amazing Doug began with PADS as coraiser to Verdot, then raiser and breedercaretaker of Pride. We feel so blessed that Doug agreed to come out of retirement (in his words to take on his dream job) and join our team. Prior to his retirement in 2009, he worked in video production for a variety of organizations and later in his career became the Marketing & Guest Services Manager at the Royal City Star Riverboat and Starlight Casinos.

His love of dogs is life long—though apparently as a child he had to settle for pictures of them on his drapes due to allergies—he and his partner bred and showed stunning American Eskimo Dogs for many years.

Doug moved to BC in 1997 and bought a boarding kennel business. All these experiences combine to serve him well as PADS’ Development Coordinator promoting and building awareness of our mission and amazing dogs.

The beautiful Bellatrix “Bella” is a six year old Yellow Labrador PADS Service Dog to client Fern. Bella was born to PADS Holly & Beau as part of our Harry Potter Litter, and she and the lovely Fern are the stars of an upcoming episode of “Collar of Duty”. KAILA BUTLER

COMMUNICATION COORDINATOR Kaila joins our team to support the communication activities of the organization, building awareness and making sure our materials reflect the awesomeness of our clients and dogs. We first met this amazing gal, when she wowed us by doing a PR project (for her program at Kwantlen) for PADS, securing local and national coverage for PADS and the assistance dog industry around the new government legislation (and PADS’ open house) last year. Kaila has a diploma in graphic design and most recently graduated with distinction from the Kwantlen Public Relations Diploma Program, and plans to continue her studies part time in marketing. She has yet to meet a dog she didn’t fall in love with and is mom to a 9-year-old “morkie” named Jasper. Kaila is passionate about communication that makes the world a better place, which is why she is so excited to be starting this new chapter with PADS.

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE

It’s hard to believe that as our summer comes to a close, and we look forward to Graduation in October, that I’ve been back at PADS nearly five years. We’ve achieved a tremendous amount in that time, and a monumental amount of work has been done—by people I consider to be the best family there is—our volunteers and donors; they make our organization possible. Our amazing board and staff show up and face challenges with such perserverance. Their belief in our mission and commitment to get the job done it is awe inspiring. I am so grateful to each and every one of you.

More important that my own milestone is that 2017 is PADS’ 30TH YEAR of changing lives!!

In those 30 years we’ve placed hundreds of life-changing dogs in communities across Western Canada. Service Dogs that perform physical tasks, Hearing Dogs that alert to life-saving sounds, Intervention Dogs that work with Community Care Professionals and Very Important Pets (VIPs) that bring joy and friendship to children with disabilities.

It has been a year of breaking new ground.

• I’m excited to share that we’ve brought two lovely ladies on board - long time volunteer Miranda Marshall and experienced dog trainer Dana Gallagher - to pilot an advanced training program in Calgary. These two each have two dogs living with them, and learning advanced skills increasing our advanced training capacity by 4 spaces.

• We’re very proud of the work we’ve done in collaboration with Bill Thorton at BC & Alberta Guide Dog Services, working with the BC Government to see the new BC Guide Dog and Service Dog Act passed into law on January 16th of this year. This has been literally decades in the making, and we’re thrilled to know that the rights of those with disabilities, and our ability to train dogs to assist them are now protected under the law. This groundbreaking legislation has received worldwide attention for its protection of assistance dog users, and its ability to crack down on fake service dogs. Today we continue to collaborate with the accredited guide and assistance dog schools across the country to develop stronger standards at a federal level.

• We’re also thrilled to be partnering with a new ADI Candidate school, Vancouver Island Compassion Dogs, in Nanaimo. We’ve recently sent them three PADS dogs that due to their temperaments weren’t suitable for our clients or programs, but that are now hopefuls in their training program as Service Dogs for Veterans with PTSD. In closing, I’m looking forward to next year—to new and exciting initiatives—save the date for the 30th Anniversary Gala honouring this great organization. We also have amazing news coming forth in the new year, stay tuned for the 30th anniversary edition of Paws for Thought next spring!!

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

I am always amazed at how quickly time passes and once again, Fall is upon us – one of my favourite times of the year. In the PADS world, Autumn is a time for celebration as we see our dogs graduate and begin the next stage in their careers. It is truly amazing to witness the transformation from cute puppy to incredible adult dog. Whether the trail leads to a graduate Service, Hearing, Intervention or VIP Dog, our puppy raisers and our trainers are to be commended. We are the envy of many schools not only here in Canada but around the globe. Please join us at this year’s Graduation on October 2nd at the Michael J Fox Auditorium in Burnaby.

The saying “it takes a village” could not be more true than at PADS. All 790 volunteers have a direct and indirect hand in making PADS a success - ensuring we make a difference in our clients’ lives and in our communities. I have never met a more dedicated group of people who do not hesitate to step up to the plate in a heartbeat. There are so many behind the scenes activities going on all at once, it’s hard to keep up most days. As a member of this incredible organization, I quickly realized how connected we all are; how very much like a family we become and how much joy it brings to my life.

Our client wait lists are long which saddens all of us. We are in desperate need of puppy raisers and sponsors. I hear many people say “I couldn’t give the puppy up when it is time.” My response is, “if you saw how much joy and freedom you are giving to our clients, you would not hesitate and you may even give it a second or third or fourth try.” Thank you to all of our repeat puppy raisers – you are amazing!

The PADS Partners Program is a way to donate on a monthly basis with automatic withdrawals from your credit card or bank account. Most people find it easier to give over time rather than a lump sum at the end of the year when funds may be needed elsewhere. This also helps PADS. It’s like a monthly pay cheque allowing us to better manage our cash flow. To sponsor a Puppy’s First Year costs $125.00 monthly. I encourage you to sign up. Remember, charitable donations over $200 receive a 29% tax credit!

I want to acknowledge our fantastic staff - Lisa, Rob, Tara, Ashley, Wendy, Allison, Karen and Doug - and welcome Kaila to the team! I would like to make special mention of a few of our training staff as we have giants in the industry here at PADS! Heather from Calgary is our dog whisperer. Her can-do attitude and tenacity is such a great blessing to our team.

quiet, caring, calm but determined personality instills confidence in our clients and creates a lifelong bond. I recently ran into a client in Vancouver with his PADS dog. Of course, I stopped him to talk about his dog. The first words out of his mouth were “How’s Ron? Is he still with PADS? He was great!”

Margaret has been invited to participate on a committee with Animal Assistance Intervention International to establish working standards for Animal Assistance Intervention International. AAII is comprised of ADI accredited schools from around the globe.

Jackie’s ABC Breeding Co-Op was the talk of the town at the recent international service dog convention in Prague. She sits on the North American breeding cooperative committee as a result of her vast knowledge and expertise.

And of course, my sincere thanks to our extraordinary Executive Director, Laura who epitomizes everything PADS stands for.

Her involvement in BC and Alberta Provincial Governments and the Federal Government is ensuring our clients have accessibility now and in the future. She is well- respected in this industry and we are fortunate to have her on our team.

I would like to acknowledge our Board Members for their dedication and commitment – Rick DeHart, Rob de Klerk, Kim Gramlich and Melanie Hanson. We are sad to say goodbye to Chris Coletta and Rob Walker who have stepped down this year, but will still be very much involved with PADS. STEP BY STEP As he walked the PADS campus during the Open House, Casey Wright seemed unphased by the steady stream of fans who came up to introduce themselves. His focus was on one thing only­- Darwin.

Those who follow BC Children’s Hospital Foundation will know Casey well from his remarkable story, and vibrant, engaging personality. Over the years, Casey has faced everything life has thrown at him, from his cancer to the stroke he suffered three years ago with his own unique humour and zest.

Following the stroke, Casey and his parents Larry and Kim, started thinking about the possibility of a service dog to help him navigate new places and assist with his balancing issues.

Long-time friends of PADS, they reached out to inquire about a service dog. Given the wait list, and Casey’s immediate need for a dog, they were thrilled to discover PADS’ Very Important Pet (VIP) program. These are well-trained dogs, with stable temperaments that cannot be certified for public access but offer love and unconditional acceptance. They took the chance, and in April they put Casey’s name on the list. To everyone’s surprise, in May, Darwin decided his path in life was to be a VIP, and his very special personality and skills were exactly what Casey needed.

The most remarkable part of this story is how much Darwin’s character resembles Casey’s. He’s a “loving, gentle, and playful dog who brings companionship and love to our family and Casey” says dad, Larry. Darwin loves the outdoors and all it includes: swimming, playing fetch and soaking up the sun.

Within this short time Darwin has become a key member of the family. Darwin was trained as a bracing dog, and this has helped Casey significantly. Without Darwin, Casey would have troubles with his balance issues. But the compassion is shown in both ways; Casey loves taking Darwin for walks, which in turn helps Casey regain strength on his weak side.

The love for each other is shown beautifully as Darwin walks simultaneously with Casey so he doesn’t fall. Casey and his family had one last thing to say about Darwin, “[he] is a therapy dog to each of us - giving love, laughs, friendship, and cuddles. We adore him and are so thankful that PADS was able to bring him into our lives.”

RAISING PUPPIES How does a wild, playful pup like young Darwin become a “rock” of a dog who walks so carefully, ensuring that Casey does not stumble? With the patient perseverance of very special volunteers. Puppy-raisers give young pups a home for the first year and a half of life.

...THE LOVE FOR EACH OTHER IS SHOWN BEAUTIFULLY AS DARWIN WALKS SIMULTANEOUSLY WITH CASEY SO HE DOESN’T FALL. Meredith and Henrik began raising Darwin in November of 2013. As advanced sitters to their previous PADS dog Dixon, they knew they needed another pup to fill the void.

Darwin was a cuddly little puppy that melted everyone’s heart, he looked like a plush toy. After having raised two labs, Henrik and Meredith thought it would be fun to raise a Golden Retriever. What a surprise! Raising a “Goldie” was a completely different experience. The lovable Darwin was a typical Goldie. Sensitive and sometimes fearful, he played well with all types of dogs and of course was wonderfully affectionate with people. He also unfortunately, loved balls.

Now, we knew that for him to make it as a PADS dog he had to lose this ball obsession. It took many months, and the help of others, but he eventually got over it. It was a wonderful day in the training centre at PADS when Margaret could toss a ball at Darwin and he did not react!

What a delight that all the hard work that was poured into Darwin was not wasted - his trainers and raisers were so committed to him. We’re delighted with Darwin’s match with Casey. The bracing training has been invaluable to Casey regaining his strenth.

Meredith and Henrik share what raising means to them. We raise puppies because we love dogs...it fulfills our need to give back to the community. The staff and other volunteers at PADS are so wonderful that it is difficult to imagine our life without them.

ON THE FRONT LINE AGAIN Caber has a well-established reputation of being the first guy to the line. In 2007 he became the first Trauma Dog in Canada, working with a victim services team. Later, he broke new ground as the first Courthouse Dog in BC. This year he hit the front lines again, heading to Fort McMurray with his partner, Kim Gramlich, to assist in the aftermath of the wildfires which devastated that community. Kim and Caber attended as part of a volunteer team called “Disaster Psychosocial Services” with Provincial Heath Services of BC, at the request of Alberta Health Services. Although Kim and Caber routinely deal with a variety of crises in Delta, Caber had not previously been on deployment for a large-scale incident of this nature.

large community as being like a “ghost-town”. Not a store or business was open, most homes sat vacant. On June 1st the community began a 4-day re-entry process, allowing citizens to return according to the zone where they lived. It was during this period that Kim and Caber did their best work. Their days were spent meeting impacted citizens at information centres scattered throughout the community, going to firehalls and the command centre and spending valuable time with a multitude of first responders (30% of police and fire first responders lost their homes).

Caber was welcomed with wide open arms by all he met. In one instance a lady approached Caber, fell to her knees and hugged him. She said “I’m sorry…I lost my home but more importantly, I lost my dog.”. Upon departing she thanked the team, saying that it was the best therapy she could have received. Kim describes this experience as a highlight in her and Caber’s careers. In her words “Caber was a rockstar!”

INTERVENTION K9’S Intervention K9’s are not only impeccably behaved, but more importantly they are selected because they are drawn to those who are in distress or upset, rather than being nervous or worried. They enjoy helping these individuals to manage the emotions of the moment.

Kim, Caber and their team arrived in Fort McMurray the day before residents were set to return. Kim describes the 6

There are now 18 Intervention Canines working with victims across the country, 10 of these were trained and placed by PADS. We currently have waiting applications from as far east as the Maritimes.

In early May, we ran a puppynaming contest for this beautiful pup donated by Denzil’s Goldens and Tara Dong. With nearly 200 names suggested, and 4000 votes submitted, “Little Miss No-Name” became “Lilo”. Thank you to everyone who suggested, voted, shared, and gave so generously to this campaign.

BREEDING PROGRAM UPDATE The PADS breeding program has continued to grow by leaps and bounds. Thanks to the generous support of the Flipouts (The Flipouts are PADS’ stamp group, each week they meet to sort through hundreds of envelopes to find stamps for resale in order to raise vital funds), we are now able to assess and manage our stud dogs’ fertility on-site and perform artificial insemination on our females with germplasm supplied by other schools. Our opportunities to share with and learn from other schools is expanding, thanks to our participation in the ADI North America Breeding Cooperative. As a result, we have been over-hauling and updating many areas of our breeding program, including establishing an online forum where breeder-caretakers can help and support one another and hosting a breeder-caretaker education meeting.

COLLAR OF DUTY

In late June or early July, PADS wrote and asked me if I would be willing to be filmed for a program which is tentatively named, “Collars of Duty�. An Ontario media group wanted to do a program about Service dogs. Although it is not my forte, at all, to be front and center in something, I agreed for the purpose of showcasing my wonderful friend and companion of 3 years - Bella and of course the terrific people of PADS who made her possible.

When the filming began, three people showed up, one was the interviewer, one the photographer and one the sound guy.

They were overwhelmingly positive, careful of bumping me and encouraging. They were very touched by my story (which I did not anticipate). They wanted to know about life before illness and life before Bella. The interviewer pressed me to think about the lowest of lows that led me to where I am today.

Not a place that I like to look at. After I told them one story, at my lowest point, the whole room was very quiet for a time.

Then the interviewer thanked me and apologized for sending me there, but she felt it was important to the story.

I found it rather interesting to see what it takes to make a 30 minute TV segment. When they first arrived, Theo was mowing the front lawn and I had chosen to read my book next to the window. They arrived and saw me sitting in the front window, reading and they thought it made a beautiful picture! For the next 45 minutes they asked me to stay there and they captured the footage of it from outside. I wonder if they will show that when the Discovery channel airs the program in 2017!

Saturday, they were back to film. This time they were keen to tape Bella working on different things. They said that she is the only dog with a myriad of jobs that they are interviewing.

In fact, they have not known of any dog that can do as much as she can! Yet, we’d only scratched the surface since we only took footage in the house. Since our originally planned game night fell through, the decision was made to take footage of my preparing a meal for Theo and then us sitting down to eat it. It was kind of funny because Theo ended up praying for our meal 3 times as they tried to capture it through film!! When we were all done filming, they could not resist my offer to have them eat the bread I baked. They loved it!

Sunday, a taxi picked me up to go shopping at Parkdale Market.

Although that market is only one block long (or half a block), I was nervous. I do not go to these things alone because people are focused on the vendors and not me in my chair. More likely to be bumped! Of course the pedestrians noticed us! Not only was it a woman with a working dog (which draws stares) it was a woman with a dog being followed by a sound guy and a cameraman! I am sure it was quite a sight! Of course, that built up the stress for me - now everyone was looking at me curiously! I like to blend in whenever possible, not wear a bright beacon!

One or two stalls in, I stopped to look at some peaches. I hadn't had any this year, yet. There was a young lady working there.

She was walking around with a plastic bowl. She smiled at me and then looked at Bella and then back at me while she got out of my way. Since she was looking at me, I thought I would ask her about the price of the peaches. She had sliced peaches in her bowl which she offered to me. Later the crew went back to get her signature of approval to be on camera. Apparently she was working there with her Mom. Sara, the interviewer, told them that this was the first time I had come alone to a farmer's market and that this is something I used to really enjoy before I got sick. They pointed out that she was the first person I engaged and both her and her mom got really teary.

The crew wanted to get a bit more camera angles and asked this girl if she would agree to recreate the scene. She readily agreed so they came and got me and told me what to do and that this girl wanted to tell me something.

I was really touched by what she had to say. She told me that she had heard from the crew that this was a first for me and she wanted to thank me for allowing her to be a part of it!

Wow! Did that ever humble me. Here I was being stressed about causing a stir and here she was thanking me for being allowed to share in a special moment. I am reminded yet again to realize that these moments in life only come about when we are willing to embrace them.

The last filming they did of Bella was in the park...there is a very large rock sitting alone in the park. Theo sent Bella climbing up to the top where she sat looking out. The cameraman said this was her superhero shot! Now isn't that just the right term?!

Bella has been my superhero for sure!

I am very grateful to God for giving me the strength and energy to make this happen. For my migraines to stay away during the whole event and for giving me the courage to share my story. Hopefully it will present PADS well (and result in financial support for such a great organization!).

I also hope it will encourage families that are touched by chronic pain to look for ways to find joy in your everyday.

SARA BLAKE & WHEELIN’ MOBILITY We’re so grateful to our friends at Wheelin’ Mobility and waiting client Sara Blake for answering our call for some new wheels for our trainers. Sara donated both a sport chair and a mobility scooter. Matt (from Wheelin’ Mobility) not only serviced Sara’s equipment for us to get it in tip top shape, but ALSO donated a sport chair and a power chair to the team. Our team and our dogs are so grateful to have such generous donors and a variety of equipment to train with. THANK YOU!! THANK YOU!!

HAPPY DOGS LEGACY FUND Earlier this year, a tragic house fire at the home of Dove Cresswell, a local dog trainer, took the lives of five beautiful dogs, including released PADS Dog Dash. In his memory PADS Puppyin-Training Dingo was sponsored for his first year of training. Our thoughts go out to Dove and everyone who loved these special dogs.

WOODLAND PARK ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Grade 6 & 7 students at Woodland Park Elementary School in Surrey, led by teacher, Lee Anne Thiessen, raised $3000 for PADS during this school year! Their efforts will go towards sponsoring and naming a female black Lab coming to us from KSDS Assistance Dogs in Washington, Kansas (sired by PADS Pride). Special thanks to PADS puppy-in-training, Gideon, and his raiser Joann Hui, who both paid a number of visits to the students over the school year to tell them about PADS and the great things we do.

BOWDOG CANINE SPECIALISTS Our Calgary program is so blessed by the people BowDog Canine Specialists. Not only do they provide us with a training space each week for our puppy class and they recently renovated their facility including a special spot just for our pups. And, look at this amazing “Welcome Home” we received when we returned to classes after the renos!!!

BC DISTILLED BC Distilled is BC’s premier craft and micro-distillery festival. Its goal is to celebrate and promote British Columbia’s distilleries.

The festival is the largest spirits event in Canada reserved exclusively for local distilleries. The evening raised over $2500 to support PADS programs. We’re so looking forward to next year!

WESTJET RAFFLE Thank you to our friends at WestJet for their ongoing support of our programs and congratulations to the lucky winners of the raffle: Grand Prize, Barb H; 2nd prize, Sidney M. and 3rd prize – Wally M.

KAYA FOR MAYA Kaya Malay Bistro hosted a fundraising evening to celebrate the life of their sweet pup, Maya, who passed away. The evening raised $2100. A puppy arriving from Susquehanna Service Dogs in December is being named Maya II in honour of their girl.

SALISH SEA CROSSING The Salish Sea SUP Crossing raised over $11K towards PADS programs! These brave souls crossed the Georgia Straight on Stand Up Paddleboards. Truly an exceptional group in both athletic and fundraising abilities!

It also seems to be genetic—the amazing Skylar & Mikah (below) set up a lemonade stand at the wrap-up event with all proceeds to PADS...so far they have raised $33 but have continued hosting a stand every two weeks so they can make a donation at the end of the summer!

FRATERNAL ORDER OF EAGLES - LADIES AUXILLARY #20 This amazing group of ladies in New Westminster made their first donation to PADS back in 1997 and they’ve been ongoing supporters ever since. Over the years they’ve sponsored Eve, Caber, Quest and Cypress...this year their donation goes towards sponsoring the handsome Puppy-in-Training Rolo. Thank you for your faithfulness to our program!

ROTARY CLUB OF SOUTH SURREY The club is committed to raising $15,000 to sponsor an Intervention Team. With support of Urban Impact, they held a “Get It Shredded” event raising a remarkable $5400 with another planned on Saturday, September 17th. Also planned is a Beatles Tribute night being held on October 21st at White Rock Royal Canadian Legion.

FLIPOUTS The Flipouts, PADS Stamp Group, continue to make life easier, by helping PADS with larger purchases! This year they’ve helped purchase equipment to improve our breeding program and client services.

THE BC PET LOVERS SHOW PADS was chosen as the BC Pet Lover Show charity of choice and raised over $3K at the event to support and build awareness of our programs. PADS Puppy-in-Training Devon was named as part of their puppy-naming contest.

MINISTRY OF PUBLIC SAFETY & SOLICITOR GENERAL We are thrilled to share that PADS is the recipient of a generous Civil Forfeiture Grant from the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General. This grant will be utilized to support the placement of Intervention dogs in Victim Services programs.

SANTA’S REINDEER LITTER

TEAM CALGARY

by Wendy Proudlock | Calgary Development Coordinator PADS Calgary is growing by “snips & snails, and puppy dog tails”.

This year has seen some fine growth in Calgary!

PADS was finally able to achieve our goal of having thirty puppies in our Alberta puppy-raising program. It will take a lot of work to maintain this number; spring turn-ins to Advanced Training naturally subtracted a few, but we are building those numbers through the expansion of the Breeding Program into Alberta.

There are now two Breeder-Caretakers in Calgary, one hosting Black Labrador Porter II, and the other hosting leased Golden Retriever Tundra. Tundra was bred to PADS Brass, and had her first litter on December 18, 2015. By popular vote, the puppies were called “Santa’s Reindeer” – Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, Blitzen, and Rudolph (pictured above).

Three have remained in Calgary, and one has transferred to the Kelowna puppy-raising program and the remaining pups have begun training in Burnaby.

Next, PADS Porter II was bred to PADS Rogue, and we welcomed her “Rocky Mountain Litter” on July 4, 201 – Balfour (at right with Porter), Hector, Peyto and Robson. These puppies surprised us by having pale yellow coats, because Porter and Rogue are both black. Check out the PADS website for a blog post explaining just how this can happen! One of these puppies will travel to a school in the States, while the other three will enter puppy-raising in Calgary.

Tundra was bred again in early summer, and we are awaiting confirmation of her pregnancy, with an anticipated whelp date close to Grad time.

There has been growth in the human departments as well. To provide more spots in Advanced Training for the ever-growing number of puppies coming through, PADS contracted two 12 PAWS FOR THOUGHT

Advanced Trainers – Dana Gallagher and Miranda Turenne – who live and train in Calgary. They each work with two dogs, and their goal is to present them as finished dogs by summer’s end, ready for placement with Clients.

At the spring AGM, we doubled our Calgary-based Board Members – re-electing Rob de Klerk and welcoming back longtime PADS volunteer and supporter Matt Mills, who served on PADS board previously. These two businessmen have great vision for the development of PADS in Calgary!

LIFE WITH NICO

Life with an assistance dog is simply easier. Clients learn this very early in their partnerships and many, like me, are sadly reminded when their loving canine partner reaches the end of their life. That’s where Nico II comes in. As I was dreading the first anniversary of Otto’s passing I got a call saying that there might be a match for me. They were right.

Nico came to me at a time of great flux; packing up one home and going to a temporary home until our final move in October. Not only that, we were leaving to England in just one week after our 30-day post team training assessment. Even though we have a base in England, we’ve only been there a few weeks at a time before we pack up and spend a few nights somewhere else.

So there was a lot of change for one brave accomplished dog, but Nico handled them like a champion.

Nico was trained with a full set of skills.

He’s learned some new tasks and has perfected them every step along the way. He’s even taught himself to bring the mail while the postman puts it through the letter slot! The long journey on the plane to England caused no concerns for Nico, he handled it like a trooper. As we arrived in England he’s had to deal with the smells of new foods and animals. He’s been moved from a rural village to a town overrun with festival goers – and their dogs. While our partnership is still quite new, mostly, he’s taken it in stride. We’re learning each other’s quirks and preferences and it’s a process that will evolve as long as our partnership lasts. It’s exciting – and a privilege - to be sharing my life with another PADS dog. I’m so glad that dog is Nico!

NEW PLACES AND FACES! In the past year, our puppy-raising program has broken new ground with the launch of our Okanagan puppy-raising program, which now has five puppies. Long time raisers Brian Smith (currently raising dog #10 - PADS Vanstone) and Paul Lindquist (currently raising Rico), have long been promoting PADS in this area—both in their day-today with their own puppies-in-training, but also at their business, the Starlight Drive-In. This year, at long last, the puppies hit the big screen with a snappy trailer promoting PADS before the feature!!

Brian had the distinct pleasure of delivering the first of our Interior puppies, Prancer, to David and Karen. It was a full circle moment as six years ago, Brian had met a couple in Vernon while he was raising PADS Miles. The couple had been blown away by the wonderful Miles, Brian and PADS. They’d never forgotten that chance encounter, and set their mind to one day raise a puppy for PADS. That couple was David and Karen (pictured at right with Prancer & their pet dog).

Since that delivery several other pups have joined the ranks in the beautiful interior: Coffee, Brumby, Dancer and Boomer. We’re ever so grateful for trainers Kim Boyes (of hyperhounds.com) and Heather Fox (of proudofmydog.ca) that have stepped up to support these new pups and raisers.

WHAT’S NEXT? With many of PADS’ own moving to beautiful Vancouver Island—including PADS FInance Administrator Allison Davidson with Breeding Dog Cleopatra, Puppy-Raisers Alan Hodgson and Liz McMillan with Cadence (at left) and long time supporters Ron and Judy Fabick—we’re definitely putting down roots in the Nanaimo area.

Our hope is that this fall, we can further expand our volunteer program into this area as well.
