the fencing range Choosing the right fencing can go a long way when it comes to creating the perfect outdoor space. Often encompassing the entire exterior of your property, your fence will become a focal point and as such should be of the highest quality. We offer a full range of fencing products. For those who prefer traditional options, we have a reliable lap panel, while those who are looking for something different can choose our durable feather edge panels. We also have a great range of fencing suitable for commercial settings. If you’re looking to create separate areas within a development – perhaps a boundary around a paddock or playground - components for post and rail or knee rail options are a fantastic way of creating divisions. We provide solutions for all specifications and budgets, so read on to find out more.

the inspiration If you’re looking to do something different with your fencing, why not consider a modern low horizontal design. Mount a timber fence on top of a concrete border for an elegant and modern scheme that makes the garden feel like an additional room rather than an external space. You could also consider mixing materials or painting your timber to create a modern feel.

palisades Palisade fencing can be found in gardens throughout the world. This fencing provides a classic traditional look in any garden and will enhance the look of any garden walkway. Different options of decorative tops can create a range of contemporary, rustic, or traditional effects.

post and rail Ideal for forming boundaries around fields, paddocks, mĂŠnages and more, it provides a cost effective and sturdy solution for restricting both livestock and pedestrians.

knee rail Knee rail fencing is commonly used around schools, supermarkets, car parks, playgrounds and retail areas. This fencing design is half a metre in height and offers a low-cost solution for boundary demarcation, directing vehicles and pedestrians along roads or foot paths.

how it works... Our unique Soundshield™ design combines sound damping technology within the panel’s core with a robust surface. This results in a large percentage of the sound source being reflected away. The sound source (unwanted noise) produces sound waves or sound energy that is blocked by the Soundshield™ barrier. Soundshield panels reduce noise transmission by an average of 22dB. Here is an everyday comparison that equated to a similar reduction:

Lawnmower

Shower

The example above acts as a rough indication only. Actual noise reduction will depend on a variety of factors.

www.bsw.co.uk | sales@bsw.co.uk | 0800 587 8887

Behind the Soundshield™ barrier a noise shadow area is created and the direct sound travels above. Remaining sound that is heard is known as indirect or diffracted sound. It is reduced sound that provides more comfortable sound levels for your garden.

21

domestic acoustic fence panels Using our expertise in manufacturing noise barriers for motorways, we have applied the same concepts to develop Soundshield™ affordable and efficient noise barrier fencing. Soundshield™ can reduce noise levels by up to 37dB through sound reflection, protecting your garden from the noise source. The acoustic core absorbs energy produced and creates a noise shadow area behind the soundwall. This area is determined by direct sound trajectory above the soundwall, taking into account the spreading of sound.

the inspiration To create a different look to your outside space, why not consider adding visual interest with curves. Most decks are square or rectangular as they’re easier to construct, but rounded edges are visually stunning and are great in small spaces. You could also take a leaf from your interior floors and use herringbone or parquet styles. This up and coming trend for high-end decks creates a seamless flow between your living space and your deck.

beams Manufactured from Douglas fir, which is renowned for its structural integrity, these beams are an attractive alternative to European oak and bring a natural touch of style into any room. Their practical use in supporting roofs, ceilings and walls is beyond question. As is their suitability for timber framed building, barn conversions and restoration projects. Sturdy they may be, but they are also very popular as purely decorative features such as mantles and faux exposed beams. Getting it right is easy: they are supplied in ungraded and visually graded sections. Visually graded sections are available in GS & SS grades which dependent on species and section are equivalent to grades C14, C16, C18, C22 and C24 therefore giving maximum design flexibility.

cladding The external finish of a building or structure makes or breaks its overall appeal. More often than not timber cladding will add enormously to the aesthetic of any structure. Partial cladding can modernise or traditionalise new or existing buildings in equal measure. Only the best quality larch logs sourced from FSC® certified British forests are used in the milling process. Cladding boards come from heartwood based selection, and are kiln dried and appearance graded. British grown larch is typically warmer in appearance than its Siberian counterpart boasting a rich heartwood colour and more grain character and displays a greater number of knots. Our timber cladding boards are manufactured under the TDCA CladMark quality assurance scheme. This verifies our factory production control procedures and ensures consistency of quality. The cladding is equivalent to grades C14, C16, C18, C22 and C24 therefore giving maximum design flexibility.

treatment information strength graded timber Softwoods are the most frequently-used timbers for load bearing situations. In order to comply with the Building Regulations they must always be strength graded. They are then usually put into a Strength Class. In the UK, softwoods are graded visually, in accordance with BS 4978:2007, or by machine to EN 14081:2005. When graded visually, all defects in each piece (such as knots, slope of grain, wane, fissures, wormholes etc), are assessed and measured against.

BSW Timber offers both machine and visually graded products. C16 and C24 machined graded products are suited to applications such as carcassing and visually graded products suitable for agricultural purlins, and load bearing large section, long length timbers. Beams which are dependent are visually graded to both GS and SS grades which dependent on species and section are equivalent to grades C14, C16, C18, C22 and C24 therefore giving maximum design flexibility.

preservative treated timbers BSW Timber provide preservative treated products for a wide range of end uses. The eventual end use of treated timber is classified into one of the 5 main categories shown in the table below. These Use Classes are based on the potential threat to the timber from decay or insect attack in its eventual application. For instance, internal building timbers in Classes 1 & 2 will be under less threat than timbers used externally in ground contact - Use Class 4. Therefore, Use Class 4 timbers will require a higher degree of protection.

use class summary 1

Internal, dry e.g. upper floor joists

2

Internal, risk of wetting e.g. tile battens

3.1

Outdoors, coated, above ground e.g. window frames

3.2

Outdoors, uncoated above ground e.g. fence panels

4

Treatments are based on different chemicals for the different applications, and are done in a pressure vessel (treatment tank) in one of two ways: either low pressure (for Use Classes 1 and 2) or high pressure (for Use Classes 2, 3 and 4), depending upon the species to be treated. Low-pressure treatments are generally suitable for internal timbers such as timber frame studding and roof trusses where the hazard is not too great, and/or the wood species has some natural durability to begin with. You can tell that the timber has been low pressure treated by its golden yellow colour. High-pressure treatments are needed for higher hazard environments and these include internal sole plate timbers as well as exterior timbers such as fence posts, boards and rails and general landscaping timbers and have an initial pale green or rich brown colouration.

Direct soil or fresh water contact e.g. fence posts

incised fence posts and sleepers BSW Timber’s incised products utilise an innovative British take on the well established North American practice of incising after seasoning pre-treatment of the timber component. This pre-treatment process deploys precise incisions on each of the four faces of the sawn post or sleeper to ensure sufficient levels of preservative penetration (6mm in the analytical zone) and retention are achieved from the subsequent treatment process to support the 15 Years Desired Service Life as stipulated within the Standard BS8417 Preservation of Wood Code of Practice.

www.bsw.co.uk | sales@bsw.co.uk | 0800 587 8887

The engineered system developed by BSW Timber takes the performance level beyond BS8417 by ensuring preservative penetration is achieved within the heartwood area of the timbers as well as the sapwood area.

species information Our market leading timber utilises several different species:

SITKA SPRUCE (Picea sitchensis) Another true Spruce, this is a native of North America, although it is one of the most commonly-planted timber trees in the UK: forming the main part of our British spruce. It is similar in appearance to European Whitewood, but British grown material is often much coarser in texture, with larger and more numerous knots.

EUROPEAN REDWOOD (Pinus sylvestris) A true Pine, this is one of the two most commonly used softwoods in the UK, and it comes in a range of qualities, each preferred for various end uses. It is a pale, creamy-coloured timber, with a more or less pinkish-brown tinge to the heartwood: and this reddish colour gives the wood its common trade name. Trees from more Northerly, colder latitudes (eg Northern Scandinavia, Russia) are of slower growth and give timber of a finer texture than wood of the same species from elsewhere in Europe. When grown in the UK, this species is called Scots pine and it is one of our few native conifers.

DOUGLAS FIR (Pseudotsuga menziesii) A native of North America, but also planted to some extent in the UK. It is a very large tree, producing timber in long lengths and large sizes. It is a very distinctive wood with a deep orange-red heartwood and a very marked contrast between the earlywood and latewood parts of the growth ring, thus giving rise to a distinctive “flame” figure in flat-sawn material, and a pronounced “comb” figure when quarter-sawn.

LARCH (Larix decidua & Larix kaempferi) British-grown Larch is (rather in the same way as Spruce and Pine) a mixture of more than one species. The majority of British Grown Larch is Hybrid (Larix x eurolepis) with a small amount of European Larch (Larix decidua) and Japanese Larch (Larix kaempferi). British Larch is denser than the other British grown Softwoods - about 550 kg/m3 - and it has a resinous heartwood which is strikingly orange-pink in colour when freshly felled, later fading to pinkish or brick red. It is clearly separated from the creamy-white sapwood. Its natural durability is an average class of 3, though as with all larch species this ranges between 2 and 4. Larch generally has a lot of small knots, which are scattered along the length of a sawn board. It can be used for all of the end-uses to which Spruce and Pine are put, and is increasingly popular for external cladding (and in this end-use, it is also helped by its durability rating).
