My roommate and I had a bulletin board that we filled with personal photos and important magazine clippings. But, because of “establishment” dorm rules that I’m sure we thought of as oppressing our human rights, we were forced to use removable ‘stickem’ putty to put up our posters of Janis Joplin, Woodstock and a dreamy, not-bald-yet James Taylor. If only they had invented removable chalkboard panels like these Chalkboard Wallies back then! We would have stuck them on our walls, doors and in the halls, to fill them with our passionate anti-war slogans…oh, and maybe even class schedules and actual school stuff.

I

am jealous of my imaginary young granddaughter — let’s call her Basmati. Or Kale. She is between the age of 10 and 14. Her school clothes are not clunky black-and-brown saddle shoes with knee socks, or a white blouse with a fairy collar under a sad navy blue cardigan — mine were! No, little Quinoa Rainbow is a free spirit. She gets to break all the predictable style rules that society has tried to place on her. She chooses to wear funky bohemian clothes to school, like this patchwork maxi-skirt from a boutique called Pupici (known as PoohPeach). This store in Kingston caters to women and children, and has a unique range of clothing, jewelry, purses and other accessories from stylish to hipster to hippie. This reminds me of the Indian skirts I wore in college when little Granola Sea Salt was just an imaginary child… Oh wait, she is!

Confessing myself

o matter how old I get, when it is Back-to-School time, I think of new shoes! Of course, nowadays, those shoes are more likely to be sneakers than ugly brown loafers, which is what I wore to school. Personally (and it almost feels un-American to admit), I’ve never liked sneakers, not even my childhood Keds. And, honestly, most of the modern sneakers I’ve purchased look ugly, feel very sweaty (and smelly!) and have thick, heavy and stiff rubber soles. It’s a chore just to pick up my feet! But, I think I finally found a great pair of sneakers — Brooks Revenna 5, which are very light (only 8 ounces) with breathable mesh covering and all-over cushioning that feels perfect.

Ahhh… This shoe has gotten high reviews with runners. Great for walking or running or that shuffling-along thing that I do.

Up Close and Personal Hopewell offers fine dining, antiques and specialty shops with a small-town feel

R

emember the small town of Mayberry? It was the quaint and friendly hometown of Andy Griffith and Opie that stole the hearts of many. For 30 minutes once a week, viewers gladly immersed themselves into the Mayberry community and after the credits were done rolling, they were left feeling happy and hopeful that places like Mayberry really existed.

And though they’re few and far between, there are still a few of those tight-knit communities out there where everyone knows and cares about each other; where safety is a given and eye contact with a stranger evokes a smile and a wave rather than a quick glance in another direction.

One of those towns happens to be the Borough of Hopewell, an inviting little village near Princeton. Rich in history, unique shops, antique stores and Zagat top-rated restaurants, it’s easy to lose track of time exploring the town and absorbing its local flavor. And no matter the store, folks might come in as visitors, but often leave feeling like part of the larger Hopewell family.

And they never leave feeling hungry. Like the shops, big corporate chains are nonexistent when it comes to its eateries. Instead, there are interesting, award-winning independent restaurants serving some of the best cuisines in New Jersey, according to Zagat. One of them is Brothers Moon on W. Broad Street.

Around Chef Will Mooney’s 35th birthday, he decided to take the plunge and go after his dream: open his own café-style restaurant.

He had been sort of building up to that moment since he was 14 back when he and his twin brother were known as the “Mooney brothers” at school. From sous to executive chef positions, Chef Mooney has run many a high-end kitchen from high profile restaurants in Los Angeles to Princeton’s Peacock Inn, Stockton Inn and Bon Appetit.

So the Mooney brothers joined forces and turned the former general store on W. Broad Street into Brothers Moon and began serving up its New American fare using the freshest of ingredients.

“American cuisine is a melding of all different cultures,” says Chef Mooney on his choice of fare. “American means you can pick from all of those different kinds of cuisines.”

Blue Bottle only uses the best ingredients when it comes to its seasonal American menu. From being gluten-free friendly to using hormone and antibiotic-free meat to preparing sustainably raised fish, the Philipsons are very conscious of what products go into their dishes.

And with an abundance of farmland all around, 90 percent of Blue Bottle’s produce is from local farms just a rock shot away.

“If you start out with a beautiful product and add exceptional care and thoughtfulness, the result is something that I would want to eat,” explains Ms. Philipson. “Clean, good food is important; I want my daughter raised on good food and to be able to appreciate ingredients.”

It all started when Ms. Philipson’s mother saw an ad in the newspaper for a vacant former Italian restaurant that was up for sale at 101 E. Broad Street. The Philipsons ended up buying it and in 2006, they opened for business. Eight years later, Blue Bottle is celebrating the summer season with its 34th menu that’s all about fresh fish, squash, eggplant, scallions and tomatoes.

It also features a nostalgic take on its famous dish that caught the attention and adoration of New York Times critics: the handmade gnocchi.

On this menu, diners will find an eggplant parmesan-inspired gnocchi that includes fresh roasted eggplant, tomatoes, basil and ricotta cheese.

Then there’s the meatball arancini appetizer with Italian meatballs stuffed with risotto and doused in tomato sauce.

One of the fun things about Hopewell’s retail scene is that nearly all the buildings have a neat history behind them. Once upon a time, the brick building at 65 E. Broad Street served as Hopewell’s Chevy auto repair shop during the 1930s. Now, it’s better known as Brick Farm Market and instead of cars, it’s packed with fresh harvests from a Hopewell farmland less than a mile away.

The Market is quite literally a farm to table establishment. Husband and wife duo Jon and Robin McConaughy, owners of Double Brook Farm, began the Brick Farm Market as a way to give the community a full service outlet for the farm. Aside from restaurants and treats, Hopewell has a variety of eclectic shops. Those looking to get their antiquing fix, should head over to the historic The Tomato Factory on Somerset Street. All under one roof is collection of 14 interesting antique dealers, with each specializing in all kinds of relics and collectibles. Almost all of them are one the first floor — except for Umbrella.

Spanning 4,000 square feet on the second floor, Umbrella is a treasure trove of not only antiques, but also inspiring pieces ranging from mid-century modern furniture and one-of-a-kind industrial lighting to unexpected oddities and curiosities. Its funky, eclectic ever-changing mix, which is curated in intriguing vignettes, gives people a piece of New York City without having to step outside the Garden State.

“People don’t have to schlep into New York — they really need to check out what we have first because they’re going to pay less and find more interesting stuff,” says Fay Sciarra, who runs Umbrella with her sister-in-law Linda Sciarra. We’re trying to show people that they don’t have to spend an arm and a leg on everything.”

Customers might not realize it, but they’re shopping alongside highend designers based in cities such as Manhattan, Los Angeles and San Francisco. Featuring only the best and experienced antique dealers, Umbrella offers inspiring one-of-a-kind pieces and decor at a steal. At any given time, folks might come across the front end of an old Buick given a second life as wall art, one of Olde Good Thing’s popular midcentury farm tables or maybe a few plush vintage French sofas.

All the items are paired and placed in ways to inspire shoppers. For example, a traditional sofa might be paired with an industrial coffee table and a Paul Evans mid-century modern chair.

“We’re showing people how to think out of the box — and it’s entertainment too,” added Ms. Sciarra. “We are also great resources because we represent the top antique dealers in the area.”

Looking for newer oddities and curiosities? Check out ebb studio, a gift shop on West Broad Street that has an array of handmade jewelry and crafts from local artists that would make for the perfect pick-meup, celebration or just because presents.

And right next door is local children’s bookstore, The Bear and the Books. After serving as a children’s bookseller at Princeton’s Labyrinth on Nassau Street for 15 years, Bobbi Fishman wasn’t sure what to do next. Finally, it struck her that after living in Hopewell for 30 years, why not give back to her local community with her passion.

Hopewell also has just the place for fine photography enthusiasts.

Only a handful of fine art photography galleries exist in New Jersey and one of them called Gallery 14 happens to be right off the beaten path on Mercer Street.

It all started with a group of photographers who would gather in their homes to chat about angles, lens sizes, techniques and everything else that had to do with their passion for working the camera. When a space became available in Hopewell, they jumped at the chance and opened their doors to the public in 2001.

Flash forward 13 years and now Gallery 14 is made up of 11 members who work together to feature and sell pieces of art created by those able to capture light in a way that evokes feeling and emotion. These pictures are not something that would be found in a JC Penny catalogue, 16 | Packet Magazine | August 2014

but rather images begging to adorn the walls of dining and bedrooms, kitchens and foyers.

“This is a space where people can come and look at good art,” explains Martha Weintraub, president of Gallery 14. “These are things you hang on your wall as art.”

Subjects and styles are endless, ranging from digital and abstract to landscapes and florals. A photo can be as small as an 8x10 that could easily be framed to sit atop a work desk. Other photos can span entire walls.

“You name, we have it,” Ms. Weintraub says. “We show the cream of the crop in the area.”

Gallery exhibits change every five weeks, featuring not only the work of the Gallery 14 members, but also local artists and renowned photographers. Last month marked Gallery 14’s fifth annual juried July exhibit, which featured 46 pieces by photographers from New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania.

This month Gallery 14 will feature exhibits by the Princeton Photography Club, a growing club with well more than 200 members, called “Art of the Human Figure.”

And a visit to Hopewell wouldn’t be complete without heading to Railroad Place to see Beverly Kidder’s Decorators Consignment, a consignment haven that often features better used furniture, meaning the top of the line brands.

“I saw a huge vacuum in the market. There were new stores and antique stores, but nothing for good, used furniture,” recalled Ms. Kidder.

Ms. Kidder has an impressive background in the arts ranging from a modeling career in Chicago and a degree in radio, television and films to working for the biggest ad agencies in Milwaukee and opening up her own ad agency. Dr. Payam Hanian — Dentistry for the Whole Family

D

r. Payam Hanian is a graduate of the University Of Pennsylvania School Of Dental Medicine. He did his general practice residency in Philadelphia working with veterans. “It was an incredible opportunity for me to interact with the veterans and learn a great deal in terms of patient management,” he says.

He then worked in a community health center in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, where he spent two and a half years working with the underserved population. “That was also an incredible learning opportunity and it was where I really found myself as a person and what’s important to me as far as practice of dentistry.”

“When I say I do family dentistry that is in the literal sense. The patients, my staff and I are part of a big dental family. It’s not strictly business. My staff and I enjoy taking to the patients about their lives and sharing with them what goes on in ours,” Dr. Hanian says. “I have many long-term patients who have referred their friends and family and that is how the practice has grown over the years.”

He acquired his current practice in Princeton from a retiring dentist 11 years ago, creating continuity in the community for three generations. “My practice has been in the community for the past 50 to 60 years,” Dr. Hanian says.

Although Dr. Payam Hanian has a variety of offerings, his practice focuses on restorative dentistry.

“We pretty much do family dentistry, with a concentration on crown and bridge and implants,” Dr. Hanian says.

“A major part of my practice is replacing missing teeth with implants,” Dr. Hanian says. “Implants are one of the most amazing things that has happened to dentistry ever. Before implants, we were limited to dentures and conventional bridges to replace missing teeth. Now, we can replace them with implants which can look, feel, and function like natural teeth.”

Dr. Hanian is excited to practice dentistry in the digital age. “We no longer need to solely rely on cumbersome impression material to fabricate dental work. People do not like the taste or the feel of them. Now, we can simply take a scan of the tooth and email the digital file to the laboratory and get back much better fitting products.”

They also offer Invisalign, an alternative to traditional braces using custom-made plastic trays. “It’s a very effective method of straightening teeth,” he says. “In many instances we use Invisalign before major restorative reconstruction to ensure the proper alignment and increased longevity of the final product.”

His office does a lot of Aesthetic dentistry as well. “The shape and the contour of the gum line directly affect the overall esthetics of any dental work,” he says. “To improve those when we do Aesthetic dentistry, I use a soft-tissue laser to reshape the gum tissue to fit the new restoration and create a natural smile. There is a very short healing time, and we get really good results.”

His highly qualified staff helps to ensure a positive patient experience. “They’re compassionate, caring, and they always put the patient’s needs and comfort first,” Dr. Hanian says. “I look for these qualities when I recruit staff and fortunately, I have a bunch of good people that are exactly that.”

Dr. David Fiero — An Orthodontist Who’s Part of the Community

W

hen you walk into Dr. David Fiero’s office and scan the degrees lining the wall, you’ll see his diploma from John Witherspoon Middle School as well as the one he received from Princeton High School. “I bought out my orthodontist who treated me in the early ’80s,” Dr. Fiero says. “I grew up around here and for some reason I wanted to move home, and I wanted to buy into this practice.”

Dr. Fiero was able to work with the orthodontists who started the practice decades before.

His practice focuses primarily on traditional braces and Invisalign, a series of plastic aligners made to fit the individual. He’s found that Invisialign is a great option for his adult patients because it’s less noticeable and gives them the luxury of taking it out when necessary.

“People are very, very happy. I think if I wasn’t doing Invisalign, I’d probably have less patients in my office because people are really hip to it right now, even the kids,” he says.

He first thought that using Invisalign would result in a shorter timeline for treatment. “But I think it’s not faster, it’s just different and more convenient,” says Dr. Fiero, who purchased the practice in 1998.

“Cases take anywhere from six months to three years, and anywhere in between, depending on how complicated things are. We try to set it up for people so they’re doing it in about a year and a half because I don’t think people have the time or the energy or the wherewithal to stick with something for more than 18 months. Although I do have people in braces for over two years.”

If given the choice, Dr. Fiero prefers traditional braces. “I think I have a little more control because I’m not convinced that compliance is 100 percent with anybody,” Dr. Fiero said. “There are downsides to braces: stuff breaks, food gets caught in braces, it doesn’t look as nice.

When you’re doing some kind of clear-align therapy, people really, really don’t notice it unless they’re really staring at you. It’s the modern way to do things. You have to rely on patients that are really doing what they’re supposed to do. A lot of people don’t wear it as many hours per day as they should, but I’d say most people do.”

Currently, about 10 percent of the kids he sees opt for Invisalign

versus traditional braces. “I think it’s dictated by their parents. The parents realize that the kids are not super-responsible with keeping track of stuff — losing it, breaking it — and they just want to make sure that it gets done because it is a little more money to do it. You pay a little extra for it.”

Dr. Fiero wants to make the process as smooth as possible for his patients. “Whatever appliances that we’re using, we want them to be less noticeable for people so they feel comfortable,” Dr. Fiero says. “Some kids are very self-conscious. Adults are very self-conscious. They don’t want anything that we’re doing to be obvious. So, that’s the main thing.

We’re just trying to keep it that way.”

But he believes that these things take time. “Some offices are trying to go faster and faster and faster with their treatment, and it sounds interesting, but I’m not convinced that faster is always better,” Dr. Fiero says. “I think the faster you fix something, the faster it can relapse back if you’re not careful.”

Seventy percent of his patients are kids, and he says he likes it that way.

“When you treat a kid, a teenager, or anyone under the age of 25, the body is very forgiving and teeth move nicely. Kids don’t have crown or bridges in their mouths. They don’t have root canals in their mouth.

They’re growing so the teeth move very efficiently and easily. When you have an adult and he’s missing a tooth or he has five root canals, 10 crowns, they have periodontal recession — their gums have receded — it’s so tricky. You can straighten their teeth, but sometimes it can be very unstable in the end. You have to go through all of these extra steps to maintain it. It’s more fun to treat kids, although the adults in my practice are all very pleasant, and I enjoy talking with them. It’s a good batch of people in this town to work with.”

Some of the adults require additional steps after he’s treated them, including working with their dentists or a periodontist to manage the finished product.

As far as the future goes, Dr. Fiero says, “I grew up here, I’ve been around town for awhile. I just want to keep working and fixing peoples’ teeth.” pmfineliving.com | 27

Princeton Care Center — making patients feel at home

S

uccess is all about results, and for Princeton Care Center, the proof of its success as a sub-acute rehabilitation center and long-term care facility not only comes with successful treatment of patients, but also via praise from the experts.

“Princeton Care Center has always done very well with its annual Department of Health inspection. The facility has consistently been rated in the four to five star category by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid,” says Dr. John Devone, Vice President of Operations for Princeton Care Center.

The family-run long-term and sub-acute facility has been operating in Princeton for 40 years. For the last 10 years, Princeton Care Center has been located in a wooded setting, at 728 Bunn Drive. The facility has 119 beds, 20 of which are in the sub-acute rehabilitation unit, where patients go through rehabilitation for many conditions such as hip fractures, joint replacement, Congestive Heart Failure, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, wound care, IV antibiotics, and stroke.

“Each patient receives an individualized rehabilitation schedule, consisting of physical therapy, occupational therapy, and in certain cases speech therapy as appropriate to the individual’s needs,” Devone says. “The goal is to get the patient back to their highest possible level of function.”

The process for admission to a sub-acute rehabilitation center generally starts with a current or recent hospital stay. Medicare guidelines must be followed, and in the case of private insurance, authorization must be obtained. The hospital social worker and case manager are available with information to aid in making well informed choices.

When a referral is made to Princeton Care Center the patient’s information is reviewed to ensure that everything is in place to meet the person’s needs. If possible an onsite visit to the hospital is conducted to meet the patient and to personally answer any questions or concerns.

Tours of the facility are also available.

“We want to make sure we can meet the needs of the patient,” Devone says.

The Long-Term Care portion of the facility comprises the second28 | Packet Magazine | August 2014

and third-floor wings of the building for individuals who need greater assistance with activities of daily living as well as ongoing nursing care.

Residents are cared for in a safe, comfortable home environment.

A few years ago, the center opened a unit specifically for patients of Asian-Indian ethnic heritage. “It’s a 28-bed unit, whereby the staff are all proficient in the more common India-language dialects,” Devone says. “A separate kitchen and chef prepare traditional Indian food on site. The unit is decorated with Indian artwork, and we have entertainment that is specific to the Indian culture.” He adds that Indian culture and religious ceremonies are observed in that unit as well.

In addition to healthcare, all of Princeton Care Center’s patients can participate in activities that are arranged by the center’s full-time activity staff. Residents often enjoy live musical performances. There’s a gardening club, book readings, movie nights, games, church groups, prayer services, shopping trips and trips to area events.

When it comes to food, the center offers enjoyable meals while also taking the needs of residents into account.

“Our kitchen gives as much menu choice as possible while at the same time abiding by an individual’s dietary restrictions,” Devone says, adding that the facility’s dietician will provide specific nutritional guidance.

For example, some patients may have difficulty swallowing, thus requiring a pureed or mechanical soft diet. More common are patients on cardiac or diabetic diets, requiring careful control of their salt, fat, and calorie intake.

The step to making Princeton Care Center a home begins with a tour.

The Admission’s staff is available to help you with the admitting process. Unlike sub-acute care, Medicare does not cover long-term care.

Payment for long-term care is generally paid through private funds or through Medicaid. A growing trend is long-term care insurance.

“It gives you great satisfaction when you see a person return to their former baseline or higher level of function as a result of the care and rehab they have received,” Devone says. “It is very rewarding to see someone regain or improve their level of independence and improve quality of life.

The Eyes Have It Princeton Eye Group and Intense Pulse Light Therapy

Dry eye is a common condition that can cause itchiness, redness, pain and blurred vision. A number of treatments exist, including FDA-approved eye drops and artificial tears.

“It’s one of the probably most common things that we see in our practice as far as patients’ conditions,” says Dr. Suzanne Jadico of Princeton Eye Group. “About 50 percent of adults experience dry eye on a regular basis, and that can be from age; medication; medical conditions, including dermatologic conditions like rosacea; prolonged computer use, things like that. So, you can treat that with drops and medications and warm compresses, but a lot of times it’s just temporary or something that you have to keep up for a long time, and not everyone experiences relief. So, there’s a therapy now available called Intense Pulse Light (IPL) to help reduce symptoms of dry eye. So, we actually have this right in our office.”

Originally used as a cosmetic procedure to treat dermatological conditions, like pigmented age spots, sun damage or rosacea, Dr. Rolando Toyas in Memphis noticed that his rosacea patients in his aesthetics clinic would return with their skin looking better, as well as having noticed a reduction in their dry eye symptoms. He then set about on a path of trials and working with a manufacturing company to devise the safest, most effective instrument that could replicate predictable results.

“We’ve just gotten this treatment in the last two months, and so far we’ve had really excellent results,” Dr. Jadico says.

“And we’re excited now to offer it to our patients.”

“It’s a painless procedure,” says Dr. Jadico. “Essentially, the doctor performing the procedure applies a shield over the eye to protect from the lights. We put a little bit of a cold jelly over the treatment area, which is the cheeks and the area under the eye. And then the device is a handheld device that administers pulses of light to the cheek and the surrounding area. The light actually faces the dermis of the skin, which interacts with oxygenized hemoglobin in the blood vessels. It helps to close abnormal capillaries that have been contributing to inflammation. It also helps to allow the oil glands to function to lubricate the eye to work a lot better.”

The treatment is repeated once a month for a series of four treatments for an initiation phase, with touchups approximately once a year afterward. “Most patients are noticing significant improvement after their third treatment, although some experience improvement after the first or second,” Dr. Jadico says. “But it can be different for every patient depending on the severity of their condition.”

The treatment is not currently covered by insurance and costs $350 per session.

They’re also offering the treatment for cosmetic reasons. “For cosmetic IPL, it can be administered by essentially any certified technician,” Dr. Jadico says. “However, the ocular treatment must be done by an ophthalmologist.”

“Princeton Eye Group has been established for over 30 years,” Dr. Jadico says. “We have eight ophthalmologists, three optometrists, in addition to a certified contact lens expert. We have a range of specialties. So, all of the doctors at Princeton Eye Group specialize in cataract refractive surgery, but in addition we have a medical retina specialist, a cornea specialist, an oculoplastic specialist. We hired a glaucoma specialist, and she’ll be starting in 2015. So, that will be our latest addition. We pretty much have most areas of eye care covered.”

“Pretty much all state-of-the-art technology,” Dr. Jadico says. “We have all of the imaging modalities that are stateof-the-art for diagnosis and treatment.”

The group’s Lasiks suite, Wills Laser Vision at Princeton, has an FS200 laser, which is the laser that makes the Lasik flap, with a blade-free incision. It’s the most accurate laser on the market and can make the Lasik flap in 6.5 seconds with very high precision, Dr. Jadico says. They also have an Allegretto laser, which is the laser that does the treatment.

It has a pupil-tracking device that refocuses on the pupil 400 times per second to account for any movement. “So, it’s every accurate for tracking any micromovements of the eye undergoing the procedure,” Dr. Jadico said. “It’s a really great technology, and our patients have been very happy.”

“We just actually finished with a big new construction project where we redid our entire waiting room and a lot of our patient care areas in order to allow us to actually see more patients more comfortably and allow patients to have a little bit more comfort in the waiting room,” Dr. Jadico says. “We’ve got a lot of positive feedback on that recently.”

Dr. Scott Kay: Experience and Innovation

He started practicing in Princeton in 1993 and moved to Plainsboro when the hospital moved.

“My practice is basically a general otolaryngology practice with emphasis on rhinology, which is sinus problems; cosmetic surgery, which is mostly nasal cosmetic surgery but also facial cosmetic surgery; and hearing issues,” Dr. Kay says. “We also do all types of audiologic testing and do hearing rehabilitation with hearing aids.”

Sinus Over the years, sinus surgical treatment has made great strides. They reached the point where only nasal endoscopes were being used. “So it became less invasive that way,” he says. “Then we began to use what’s called interoperative computerized navigation, so it became more precise with less complications.”

“And now we’re also using balloon sinuplasty, which is using balloons to open up sinuses, pass over wires into the sinuses, and that allows us to do things a little bit more accurately, especially with the frontal sinus,” Dr. Kay said. “But we can also do these things in our office too, which is unusual and nice.”

Hearing aids Huge technological strides have been made in arena of hearing aids.

They now have hearing aids that can cancel background noise and feedback, as well as those that adjust for one’s hearing to be better in

one ear than the other, which can send signals to one another.

“We also have hearing aids now that can be operated and can be adjusted through the use of smart phones,” Dr. Kay says. “And so you can put your cell phone on a table, so to speak, and you can put it in front of the person you want to hear, and actually that sound can come through the cell phone into the ear through the hearing aid.”

Cosmetic The length of Dr. Kay’s experience with Botox is of note. “I’ve been using Botox for about 25 years, even though it’s only been in practice for 21 because prior to its cosmetic use it was developed at Columbia Presbyterian, where I trained, we were using Botox for facial paralysis and things like that way before they started using it for wrinkles,” Dr. Kay says.

“Basically, the Botox is really fairly complication-free, very, very effective, and there’s no down time,” Dr. Kay said. “It’s quick, and it works.”

They also offer facial fillers like Restylane, Juvederm and Radiesse.

They’re used to increase volume around the eyes and nose, especially to enhance the cheeks, which raises the skin off the jaw, so less treatment is needed for that area than you would otherwise.

Dr. Kay is now in the 15th year of his practice and serves as an adjunct professor at the Robert Wood Johnson School of Medicine. Every year for the past seven years he has been named either ‘Top Doctor of the Metro Area’ or ‘Top Doctor of New Jersey.’

He has been able to do pro bono work with Face to Face, where he has treated victims of abuse.

Being beautiful doesn’t mean being formal. The right hair, dress and smile can bring style to any summer outing.

ummer likes to play it off like it’s the season of rest and relaxation, but we know better. The warm weather and sunshine brings out the ambitious side in us in that we’re all out to conquer our social calendars three barbeques at a time. Let’s face it, from the moment you bust out of those office doors, you’re everywhere: festivals, carnivals, concerts, baseball games, beaches and cruise ships — you name it, you’re en route.

And of course, when you show up, you don’t exactly want to look like you stepped out of a beauty salon from 1999. You want to look effortlessly fresh and chic with the hottest hairstyles and makeup — and ideally, you’d like to accomplish this in about negative 10 minutes.

Then there’s the Park Avenue blonde trend. Those wanting a little more edge are advised to go heavy on platinum through mid-level blonde highlights.

“With blondes in the summer, the sun tends to lighten the natural pigment and the platinum highlights cools everything off and gives it that icy blonde feel,” says Mr. Bricker. “I’m a firm believer that there is a blonde color for everyone. It’s not necessarily the level that doesn’t suit you — it’s the tone.”

“It’s a quick and less expensive appointment that can make you feel super-freshened up. Or, they can just be able to ride the summer out relatively carefree about their color,” she adds.

It’s also time to grab the scissors and embrace the “lob,” or long bob style. Not too short and not too long, the lob sits just at the collarbones, allowing your neck to breathe without going pixie.

And if you don’t already have them, stay away from bangs until the temperature gets a little cooler — sweaty strands glued to your forehead is never really a good look. For those with bangs, no need to fret. Ms. Rogers encouraged you to grow them out a bit for a side-swept style so you have the added option of clipping them back.

“I like using a few colored bobby pins stacked together, so it looks a little more like an intentional style choice and less like you just need to get those things off your face,” she says.

And put down those flat irons and step away from the relaxers. Gone, at least temporarily, is the strand-frying craze of pinstraight hair. Texturizing mousses and sprays are about to become your best friends because voluminous, sexy beach waves are now all the rage.

“Texture is going to happen — curls, curls are going to be in,” says Mr. Bricker. “That’s what we’ve seen in Europe the last two years and I’m starting to see it more and more each year.”

Salons have everything you need to bring beauty and style to summer.

Can’t hold a curl? No need to endure the odors of the timeconsuming perms that have been plaguing moms and grandmothers alike. Mr. Brick has the cure: American Wave, a waving system that uses big spongy wraps infused with ions to curl hair instead of chemicals of yore. For naturally wavy-haired beauties, he suggests massaging in a controlling product, fingering out your waves and letting it air dry.

For either side, the stylists at Cosmo Bleu on Nassau Street reach for Oribe Dry Texture Spray, which acts like a dry shampoo to freshen up your hair.

For many, where there is summer humidity, there also is the battle of the frizz. While several beauty professionals prescribed keratin treatments or moisturizing mousses such as Arrojo Styling Whip to combat unruly hair, Ms. Rogers took on a more “make love, not war” approach.

“I don’t think a little frizz is necessarily the enemy when it comes to wavy hair — it’s natural and it gives volume,” says Ms. Rogers. “If you like to heat-style your hair straight, just make sure it’s bone-dry before you go outside or else the moisture in the air will be attracted to the moisture in your hair and it will create frizz.”

Going swimming? Don’t worry about pricy leave-in conditioners and hard-to-find specialty sprays. Mr. Bricker’s go-to tip to protect hair from chlorine and salt water is free and can be extracted from any faucet or garden hose. His secret? Tap water.

“Wetting your hair with tap water before going in the pool or ocean totally protects your hair,” he said. “It absolutely works and it’s my favorite tip for the summer.”

As a former makeup artist for MAC, Mr. Bricker divulged his one compact rule: go with something that suits the skin tone and then blend, blend, blend.

Whether going on a summer date or to the office, stylists at Cosmo Bleu recommended that women sweep their locks into side braids and topknot buns for no-fuss chic styles. For the fellas, it’s all about the retro side-parts (think Don Draper) for that businessman-look with an edge.

“You can take one compact and make so many different looks whether it be soft, natural or heavy,” he said.

For Jessica Prasch, the salon manager at Theo’s of Princeton, suggested side-swept updos and low, slicked-back ponytails for those pressed for time.

“Be sure to keep regular trims every six to eight weeks to stay runway fresh,” adds Ms. Prasch.

It’s also time to freshen up those makeup bags. In summer, less is always more with makeup taking a turn for the sheer and au natural. Opt for shimmery neutrals, peaches, golds or bronzes and make sure to apply that color to all parts of the face to get a monochromatic look.

For Ms. Prasch, it’s all about mineral make up for a flawless finish in addition to shimmery bronzers for that sought after sun-kissed look.

For lips, she recommended rich, vibrant pink lipsticks and glosses.

The most important advice shared by all the stylists was to not try not to get hung up on looking perfect and to just go out and enjoy summer.

“It’s easy to get tunnel vision and obsess over your baby hairs curling up or whatever,” says Ms. Rogers. “But I promise you that no one’s looking as hard as you are — we’re all worried about our own sweaty stuff.”

The remarkable vision of Inez Howe Howell Howell Living History Farm presents early 20th century life in all its rugged glory

W

henever somebody goes home with some manure on their shoe or some corn in their pocket, they’re leaving with part of Inez’s vision.

We are three-quarters of the way through a walking tour of the Howell Living History Farm when Pete Watson, its director, shares that insight, a hint of amusement in his voice.

It was Inez Howe Howell’s hope, when she donated the farm to Mercer County in 1974 in honor of her recently deceased husband, Charley, that it “be used as a Living History Farm, where the way of living in its early days could not only be seen but actually tried by the public, especially children — milking a cow, gathering eggs in a homemade basket — helping to shear sheep, carding wool, spinning and weaving.”

I’m saddened to think that the Howells never had the chance to realize their own private dream: A peaceful, bucolic retirement lived out on the farm’s 130 rolling acres. I’m saddened too by the fact that Mrs. Howell never had the chance to visit the farm after her vision was brought so beautifully to life.

But I’m beholden to her for her generosity and foresight. By preserving this land for posterity, Mrs. Howell preserved a way of life that, by the 1970s, had practically disappeared.

Mr. Watson is grateful too, a fact made evident by his words and actions. The way he walks the property, greeting employees by name and stopping to chat. The joy on his face any time a group of school children comes into view. The pleasure he finds in the simple things, like stopping to watch a family of water snakes sunning in the grass, or admiring a wheat field nearly devoid of weeds.

And while those people have come and gone better for the experience, others, himself included, have come and stayed.

Mr. Watson planned to spend just a few years at Howell Farm, enough time to learn from old-timers who were farming the land, before taking what he learned and sharing it with up-and-coming Peace Corps volunteers, but “The longer I stayed, the more difficult it was to turn away the opportunities that lay before us — to begin farming all the fields with these methods, restore all the buildings, acquire the property around the farm to help tell the story of the community it was in.”

Helping tell the story, literally, is Larry Kidder, a retired history teacher from the Hun School who spent the better part of three decades bringing students to the farm. In the years since his retirement, he has written three books: A People Harassed and Exhausted; Farming Pleasant Valley: 250 Years of Life in Rural Hopewell Township, New Jersey; and The Pleasant Valley School Story: A Story pmfineliving.com | 49

Volunteers whose now-grown children took part in The Hatchery, a program that introduces preschoolers to farm life, work as seasonal docents, donning period clothing and guiding children on tours of the farm.

Since hosting its first group of school children in 1983, Mr. Watson estimates that about 23,500 kids have visited each year. Multiply that by 31 (the number of years the farm has been open), and that’s more than 700,000 children. More than half a million young minds forever changed by an experience Mrs. Howell set in motion.

I ask Mr. Watson, who never had the chance to meet Mrs. Howell, what he would say to her if he could.

He’s quiet for a moment, a smile tugging at his lips.

“I’d say, ‘Thank you, Inez, for the opportunity to present your farm, and your appreciation of farming and rural lifestyles from days past, to people of today so we can take from it things of value to us.’” He pauses a moment longer, then concludes, “That’s what I’d tell her.”

Mr. Watson knew Mrs. Howell’s dream had been successfully realized when he read this comment in the guest register: “They would have been so pleased!” It was penned by former neighbors of the Howells.

“That stuck in my mind,” he says. “Here was someone who knew the Howells, knew they were gone, and saw what had evolved after they gave the farm to Mercer County, and their thought was they would be very pleased. It was nice to hear somebody say that, especially since there isn’t any immediate family to tell us anymore,” Mr. Watson says.

Helping kids understand history We’ve stopped for a few moments at the John Phillips House, where I talk to Kim Daly, a seasonal docent who has just finished showing two groups of school children how corn is ground into meal for bread, and milk churned into butter.

I saw the kids earlier, over by the barns, their rapt faces absorbing every detail as another docent talked to them about the corn stored in the corn crib.

“We tell them about the multiple uses for the corn: Seed for the next crop, shelling and grinding it for animal feed, mixing it into the horse’s winter feed as a source of energy and power,” Mr. Watson says.

In the kitchen, which all the children believe is hers, Mrs. Daly bakes corn bread in a wood-burning oven while school children, 25 or so at a time, sit on the wooden benches rimming the room.

She takes the kids on a journey, a day in the life of an early 20th-century farm wife, along the way showing them that nearly everything a farm family consumed came from the land they worked.

The children take turns sifting flour and churning butter, and answering questions posed by Mrs. Daly – questions meant to make them think hard about what life was like when their great-great grandparents were their age.

“I tell them about how there was no garbage pickup, so we had to recycle everything. I tell them that almost everything we do today could be done 100 years ago. We just had to do it differently,” Mrs. Daly says.

I wonder aloud what she hopes they take away from the experience, and she answers quickly: “That everything doesn’t come from the grocery store, that the grocery store has to get it from someplace else.”

Then she reminds them that grocery stores they’re familiar with didn’t exist 100 years ago, and even if they had, a typical farm wife wouldn’t have had the money, or the means of transportation, to “just run out and get things like we do today,” she says.

She’s got a lot of ground to cover in the half hour she’s given — how 50 | Packet Magazine | August 2014

the lady of the house had always to think about how she would feed her family with what she had at hand; how the stove was powered with wood from the trees surrounding the house; how natural sweeteners were harvested from bee hives and maple trees on the farm; how ice was carved from the frozen pond and stored in the ice house beneath two feet of insulating sawdust and straw.

Preserving a way of life Earlier in the walk, Mr. Watson told me about how Ian Ferry, a historic farmer, finished planting a corn field the day before, using a horse and antique seeder, and how other fields were planted with oats, wheat and hay. When the time is right, these same fields will be weeded and harvested using antique implements and real live horsepower.

“Corn, oats, wheat, hay — that’s the rotation used in this valley for longer than a century,” Mr. Watson explains. On each of the four fields spread out across the farm, that’s the rotation that’s followed, with hay planted for three or four years in a row, or for as long as weeds can be kept at bay.

“We don’t use a lot of chemicals. We want to show farming and the lifestyle of a typical family of this area in the 20th century. This is how they would have farmed, these are the horses they would have used, this is the livestock they would have had,” Mr. Watson said, indicating the farm’s chickens, sheep and horses.

It’s educational, even for farmers.

Mr. Watson once chatted with a visitor who was looking at the chickens.

“I knew right away that he was a farmer. He had on a John Deere

hat, and his hands were farmer’s hands, so I struck up a conversation and the guy asked what kind of chickens they were,” Mr. Watson says.

The question surprised Mr. Watson. “You’re a farmer,” I said to him, “you don’t have any?”

The man responded, “No, I have 2,000 acres of peppermint. That’s all I have.” To Mr. Watson, this stood as a clear example of what’s happened to agriculture.

“The farmers who remain are highly specialized. What you learn in Kindergarten about farms — Old MacDonald’s farm and all the animals he kept on it — opportunities to see how the old system worked are few and far between,” Mr. Watson says.

“Around 1900, the time period captured at Howell Farm, about 30 percent of the population farmed; 100 years before that, a majority of people farmed. Now, only about 1.5 percent farm,” Mr. Watson says.

It takes a village

Like most non profits, the farm relies on the hard work and sweat of volunteers who freely give of their time to help wherever needed, keeping fields weeded, for example, and woodland trails clear of brush and other debris. Mr. Watson is indebted to each and every one.

He’s also thankful for his staff — seven full timers and a dozen seasonal part timers — and his wife and four sons, who spent most Saturdays while growing up volunteering at the farm.

He’s grateful for the politicians who ensure the farm has the funding and support it needs.

“The (Mercer) County Parks Commission has always supported it,” Mr. Watson says. “To me, that says a lot about the people we trust to govern us. It’s an example of government working very well to provide services to the people who value the services.”

And, he’s grateful for his Saturdays at the farm, because those are the days he can indulge in one of the things he loves most: Mingling with guests.

“During the week, it’s a rare treat for me to go out with the kids. Reports and administrative work consume my time then, but that’s OK because I love what I’m doing,” he said.

But on the weekends, when the computer sits idle, Mr. Watson finds himself living history at Howell Farm.

How to get involved Howell Living History Farm offers two programs for kids: The Hatchery (a weekday morning program for preschoolers) and FarmHands (a Saturday program for kids ages 6-12). Both programs are designed to introduce children to farm life through age-appropriate, hands-on, seasonal activities.

T

he roll of the dice; the deal of the cards and the sounding of the bells of a winning slot machine are what draw thousands to Atlantic City every day.

Even thousands more come to the historic seashore destination for a relaxing midweek getaway or romantic weekend without even setting foot on the casino floor.

From spa treatments to shopping, Atlantic City has all the therapy visitors need to relax and refresh.

Whether it’s a day trip or an overnight jaunt, the resorts, restaurants, boardwalk and shopping areas keep visitors busy day and night.

In the swim Summertime means diving into the cool water whether at the beach or at one of the many resorts’ pools.

Beach season runs from Memorial Day to Sept. 30 with lifeguards on duty from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Access to the public beaches is free, and some casinos have beach service with chairs, cabanas, entertainment, and servers offering food and beverages.

several locations along the shore, and anglers can cast their lines from the beach during non-bathing hours or at the jetties on Maine Avenue and the inlet off the boardwalk.

If sand between the toes is unappealing, resort guests can take advantage of indoor or outdoor pools fit for royalty.

The Water Club, on the Marina, offers an indoor oasis with a heated pool, infinity-edge dipping pool, two hot tubs, comfortable chaise lounges, and a bar all surrounded by palm trees and tropical plants.

Revel, located along the Boardwalk, boasts the In/Out pool, which is divided by a wall of glass. Guests swim through a cutout in the wall to go from indoors to outdoors. There’s plenty of comfortable seating and servers are available to deliver food and drinks. The In/Out pool is open year round and, like most of the Revel, offers spectacular ocean views. Private cabanas with plush furniture and televisions and private pools also are available.

The Pier Shops, on the Boardwalk, offers shoppers world-class merchandise like jewelry at Tiffany and fashions and accessories by Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Burberry, and Michael Kors.

“The Pier’s shopping experience is very different from any other shopping venue because of all the luxurious retailers as well as five amazing restaurants such as Buddakan and Phillips Seafood,” says Harry Geety, general manager of The Pier Shops.

“The Pier Shops appeals to families,” Mr. Geety adds, “because we have beach chairs and sand that overlook the ocean, the best candy store in the world — It’s Sugar — Glow Golf and Apple Store for all the family’s electronic needs.”

The Pier Shops also will host free concerts on the beach: Blake Shelton on July 31 and Lady Antebellum’ on Aug. 3. An air show is set for Aug. 13 and the Miss America Parade of Shoes will be held Sept. 13.

The Row at Revel offers 55,000 square feet of shopping paradise.

Specialty boutiques like Hugo Boss, Revolution Jewelers, and Denim Habit will keep shoppers in high-end fashion. Emporium is a special section of The Row for upcoming international designers to showcase their products. Boutiques inside the Borgata, on the Marina, include Carina, Fixation, Just Cavalli, Hugo Boss and Misura. Health How to sneak fruits and vegetables into any recipe Fruits and vegetables are the building blocks of a healthy diet. But many people do not eat the recommended number of servings of produce. That’s especially true among growing children, who can benefit greatly from the vitamins and nutrients fruits and vegetables provide.

According to the latest data from the NPD Group, a market research firm, Americans eat a little more than half a cup of fruit and a cup of vegetables per day. This is less than half of what the government recommends. The data is similar in Canada, where researchers at Concordia University found that Canadian adults ages 30 to 60, especially those from lower socioeconomic backgrounds, aren’t consuming the daily recommended levels of fruits and vegetables.

Anyone who eats roughly 2,000 calories per day should strive to consume between two to three cups of vegetables and two cups of fruit per day. Produce helps to fight disease because it contains healthy antioxidants, fiber, minerals and vitamins. Eating four cups per day may seem difficult, but there are many ways to incorporate fruits and vegetables into everyday recipes.

• Substitute pureed fruit, like figs, pears and apples, for oil in recipes for cakes and cookies. This will ensure the baked goods are moist but with a lot less fat.

• Add fresh berries or raisins to breakfast cereals and oatmeal.

• Add cauliflower or squash to boiled potatoes before mashing them to increase the nutritional punch and flavor of mashed potatoes.

• Blend fruits and vegetables to create smoothies for breakfast or lunch on the go.

• Bake hearty muffins or breads with sweet potato or carrots in the batter.

eslie Grillo was awe-struck the first time she drove onto the 123-acre estate at 259 Rocktown Lambertville Road in West Amwell Township. “When you come on the property it’s just so peaceful and serene and beautiful,” she says.

She and her husband purchased the home, built in 1767, almost six years ago.

The property “The house sits on a little bit of a hill looking down over a beautiful pond,” Mrs. Grillo says. “We get lots of different birds and wildlife, which has been interesting to me (after) moving here from Las Vegas.

It’s been nice to see all the different birds and egrets. It’s just amazing.”

Of the 123 acres, 80 are preserved woodlands, a portion of the land is leased out to a farmer to grow alfalfa, and the remaining 26 acres around the house are completely fenced.

The property has a six-stall king barn with several fenced-off paddocks, as well as a riding arena. It also has one of the original Sylvan concrete swimming pools that they estimate is about 40 years old. “We jokingly call it the ‘cement pond,’ like from ‘The Beverly Hillbillies,’” Mrs. Grillo says.

And then there are the gardens

A view of this field is the perfect way to wind down after a busy day.

“The gardens on the property are amazing,” Mrs. Grillo says. “Extensive gardens of lilies, hydrangeas, peonies. In fact, there’s a concrete wall that basically divides the patio, then you go down steps to the pool, and all along that concrete wall is just lilies. It’s just incredible when they bloom. So, the gardens here are spectacular.”

“There’s also a fenced-in vegetable garden that’s approximately 20 feet by 30 feet” Mrs. Grillo says.

The home The four-bedroom, three-bath home itself also has a lot of character with a number of original features, including flooring made of wide plank pine and wooden beams.

The home includes a kitchen with vaulted ceiling and walk-in fireplace.

“One of our favorite features is in the kitchen,” Mrs. Grillo says. “One wall is a stone fireplace. Originally when we moved in I thought, ‘We’ll never use that, you’re in the kitchen, you’re cooking, it’ll be too hot.’ But we use it all the time. It is absolutely incredible.”

The Colonial home also has two additional wood-burning fireplaces, one in the dining room and one in the family room.

Prior to their purchasing the home, the kitchen had been updated with Viking appliances and a center wood island, and the family room and master bedroom were added.

“The family room is all windows looking out over the pool and the pond,” Mrs. Grillo says. “So, it’s got a really spectacular view of the property.”

History And the home has a touch of history as well. The property is believed The living room has a beamed ceiling and a fireplace. to have been home to John D. Rockefeller’s ancestors.

“It used to be the home of Ann Rockefeller,” Mrs. Grillo says. “And there’s actually a cemetery on the property where Ann Rockefeller is buried. The people that are from this area refer to it as ‘Dead Rock’ because of the cemetery with Ann Rockefeller in it.”

Although they’ve enjoyed their retreat, their five children are grown and have left home. So, they’re ready to downsize. “The ideal buyer would be somebody who comes here not for any one particular thing — not for the house, not for the barn — but just comes and falls in love with the property because it is so beautiful and magical,” she says.

“It’s just one of the places that you have to come here and fall in love,” Mrs. Grillo says. “Every person that we have ever had at our house — every client, every friend, every family member — absolutely falls in love. We call it the Judy Sue farm after my husband’s late mother Judy and my late sister Sue. So, it’s a very special place, and we actually got married on our property.”

Backyard Clam and Lobster Bake Celebrate summer with a delicious and fun food experience you and your guests will never forget

A

New England clam or lobster bake is the ultimate summer blow-out event. At Hiram Blake Camp in Maine, where my parents went each summer, there is a weekly lobster “picnic” held on a nearby island in Penobscot bay. Attendees rough it, sitting on rocks and balancing plates to eat, and with seafood plucked right from that bay, and vegetables grown in the camp garden, it makes for a delicious meal.

The idea of putting on a lobster/clam bake yourself can be intimidating. But rest assured, you don’t have to go the classic route of digging a pit on the beach and filling it with wood and heated rocks before piling on the seaweed, lobster, clams, corn, potato etc. You can have a clam/ lobster “boil” instead, on your stovetop or over a backyard grill. And, if you have a large charcoal grill or backyard fire pit, you can build a bake right inside of it over hot coals.

When I lived in Colorado, my boyfriend’s father in Maine overnighted us a couple of dozen live lobsters for an outdoor shindig where we planned to introduce our landlocked friends to the joys of a New England lobster boil. Imagine our horror when they arrived frozen solid thanks to an excess of dry ice. Frantic late-night phone calls ensued, and once the lobster pound opened the next morning, they told us to just keep them frozen until it was time to boil them. With some trepidation, we complied and had a great al fresco cookout that day in spite of having to simultaneously instruct many of our guests, some squeamish, on how to eat a whole lobster – that was the hard part.

We just boiled the lobsters and corn in big pots over a fire that day, and if you have a big enough washboiler or enamel pot, you can follow Craig Claiborne’s instructions for the layered Washboiler Clambake below. You don’t have to have seaweed, but after calling around I determined that McCaffrey’s fishmonger can order it for you, and they emphasized they will obtain whatever you want, even ordering from a picture of your ideal clambake if you want. Or, for the truly ambitious, you can order 30 pounds of seaweed (aka rockweed) online from www. vitaminseaseaweed.com, and buy your seafood where you will.

And if you just want to have your whole event catered — a grand gesture your guests will talk about for years — Nassau Street Seafood assures me that, while they don’t do other types of full service catering, they do cater lobster and clam bakes. I can’t think of a better way to celebrate summer.

When I polled my email list of local chefs, Josh Thomsen, chef/coowner of Agricola in Princeton, responded right away. He’s done this on a large scale, seaweed and all, at an Outstanding In The Field Sea Cove dinner in 2012 on a beach in Santa Cruz, California. OITF holds these outdoor dinners all over the country, usually in farm settings, and they’re known for their beautiful long tables that create a gorgeous scene in a natural setting.

Lobsterclambake.com’s directions for stove or grill top boils skip the seaweed. Each serving includes: 1 lobster ½ pound shellfish, including any or all: mussels, oysters, clams/steamers ½ pound sausage (linguiça, kielbasa, or Andouille recommended) ½ onion, cut into quarters 1 ear of corn 2 or more cans of beer, or water For a stovetop boil, they instruct, “Heat a tablespoon of butter in the pot and add the sausage and onion. Sauté until the onion softens and the sausage begins to cook through. Then add a layer of shellfish. Pour in the beer and then place the lobsters and corn in the pot so that all your food is nicely packed in. Bring to a boil, cover the pot, and cook for 12-15 minutes.”

If you use a charcoal grill, remove the grate and layer the ingredients in the order they’re listed above. Close the grill and cook for about 1 hour, or if you lack a cover, lay a layer of wet burlap (use beer) over the ingredients to create a steamy environment.

Here’s Craig Claiborne’s boiled version, which does include seaweed, although I notice that Silver Palate Good Times cookbook suggests a bed of fresh herbs instead. Try lots of parsley, and lesser amounts of rosemary, thyme, oregano, tarragon.

Washboiler Clambake Adapted from The New York Times Cookbook, Craig Claiborne, Harper & Row (1961) 8 servings This is suitable for indoors or out, but I really think each person needs at least half a lobster. F.B.

Wet seaweed, well-washed 1 quart water 4 Idaho potatoes, wrapped in foil 2 chickens, cut up, each part wrapped in cheesecloth Two 1½ pound lobsters (or more) 4 ears corn, husked, cut in half, and wrapped in foil 24 steamer clams Fill the bottom of a washboiler or large enamel pot with a layer of washed seaweed. Add the water and place over high heat. When water boils, add potatoes and more washed seaweed. Cover.

About 15 minutes later, add the chicken and a layer of seaweed.

Cover.

Fifteen minutes later, add the lobster and more seaweed. Cover.

About 8 minutes later, add the corn.

Ten minutes later, add the clams. Cover and steam until clams open.

Serve with butter and kettle liquid as a dip.

All too soon for my taste, cool breezes will begin to sway the trees, the pool will be alarmingly brisk in the morning, baseball writers will speculate about the playoffs, and shop windows will start touting another glum three-word phrase: “back-to-school.”

Perhaps a bottle of rose? Its rosy pink hue is like sunshine captured.

But not to fear, for summer folk like us there are still many hot days and warm nights ahead. Besides, I know a few ways to keep that summertime vibe going strong.

Drink rosé Nothing says summer better than a cold glass of rosé. Behold its rosy pink hue like sunshine captured and made liquid. Breathe in its pleasing aromatics, its delicate notes of strawberry, peach, and melon. Taste that thirst-quenching mix of red grape fruits and tannin chased by white wine-style crispness and acidity.

Whether on its own or with dozens of food pairings, rosé wins every time. It’s the perfect aperitif for when guests show up, a reward after yard work on a sweltering afternoon, and an easy match for burgers, seafood, sandwiches, and green salads. That’s why I call rosé the “universal solvent!”

A typical Saturday lunch at our house involves a medley of salads (some choice chicken salad, red bliss potato salad, and lively arugula lightly dressed with olive oil and balsamic), a fresh baguette, cheeses, olives, and — you guessed it — a well-chilled bottle of rosé. Very tasty, very easy, and very, very summer!

Try some well-chilled light reds Most red wines, especially full-bodied varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sangiovese, and Syrah, shouldn’t be served as cold as white wines. Chilling a red tends to keep the wine’s aromatic bouquet and complexity of flavor on ice — literally. But there are a few lighter-bodied reds that drink wonderfully well-chilled, most notably Beaujolais, made from the Gamay grape.

Restaurants in France typically serve Beaujolais and its grand cru variants (i.e. Brouilly, Fleurie, Morgon, Moulin-a-Vent) cold, the bottle cradled in an ice bucket table-side. Fruity and unpretentious, Beaujolais loses nothing in the big chill. It’s a fun wine that refreshes, ideal for barbecues and picnics especially if some tangy rib, roast chicken, and potato salad are also on-hand.

Other lighter-bodied reds that can be served cold are Dolcetto, Barbera, and Cabernet Franc, such as a nice smoky Chinon from France’s Loire Valley. So don’t fret, it’s no faux pas to serve some red wines cold.

Dine al fresco There’s something about dining out of doors that just makes food and wine taste better. Ever notice how appetizing the neighbor’s grill

smells when just the slightest whiff gets caught on the breeze? Maybe when we’re eating in the open air we tap into some primal instinct that hones our senses, particularly the olfactory.

Whatever the reason, dining al fresco is one of the true pleasures of summer. And just as well-crafted stemware will greatly enhance the aroma and flavor of wine, quaffing your favorite red, white, or rosé on the porch or patio will also make it livelier.

The calendar says that summer is ending but that’s just semantics.

Celebrating peaches at Terhune Terhune Orchards will host a Just Peachy Festival, Aug. 2 and 3, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Both days will feature live country music, noon to 4 p.m. The Barn Cats will be playing on Saturday and Past Times will perform on Sunday. Families can take a tractor-drawn wagon ride through orchards, and children can visit barnyard animals.

Live Music at Mercer County Park Mercer County Park is inviting music lovers to kick back and enjoy concerts at the Mercer County Park Festival Grounds in West Windsor, which will host themed summer concerts by the acclaimed Paul Plumeri Blues Band, the Ernie White Band, Papa Deluxe & The Main Street Groove and the Philadelphia Funk Authority as well as bands that pay tribute to the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, as the 2014 Summer Concert Series continues.

Local Legends Night, featuring Paul Plumeri Blues Band and the Ernie White Band, is scheduled for Aug. 9, 6 to 10 p.m., when these local legends will play a wide repertoire of blues and popular songs from today and the past halfcentury. McCarter Theatre will open its 2014-15 season with Shakespeare’s Antony & Cleopatra, September 5 through October 6.
