Hormonal Balance Made Easy... ! ! ! ! ! Ejtdpwfs!Qfmmfu!Uifsbqz" IN LESS THAN A MINUTE, just a few times a year, you could restore your body to its optimal functioning – regaining the hormonal balance of your youth. You could experience energy levels you didn’t even think you were capable of. Those stubborn pounds could finally start melting away. And your life could look brighter than it has in a long time. If that sounds too good to be true, ask Dr. Gino Tutera – or better yet, the multitude of men and women who have discovered an exciting new self through his revolutionary treatment: SottoPelle Therapy. Pioneered by Dr. Tutera, SottoPelle uses bioidentical hormones and an innovative subcutaneous delivery to harmonize the system into perfect balance. The bioidentical hormone pellets used by SottoPelle are pure, with no fillers or artificial ingredients, held to the highest standards of quality. Since the hormones are exactly like the ones naturally produced by the body, SottoPelle patients aren’t plagued by unpleasant side effects – a frequent complaint of synthetic hormone users. So how does it work? All in all, the procedure takes about thirty seconds, estimates Dr. Tutera. It’s minimally invasive, with limited office visits required. Typically, female patients only need to be seen three times a year. For male patients, it’s usually only twice. A local anesthetic is used to quickly numb the skin at the injection site: a fatty area on the hip that the patient isn’t likely to sit on or bump. Then, using a specially designed instrument, Dr. Tutera inserts the pellets. Once inside the body, the pellets begin to provide a customized flow of hormones, providing precisely what your body needs to regulate itself back to full vitality. The unique pellet system allows for an accurate delivery, more effective than messy creams or sticky patches. But how does it feel? The procedure itself is completely painless (and very quick), though you may experience a few second of mild discomfort during the numbing of the skin. Afterward, you’re free to resume your regular routine; immersing the site in water and certain exercises should be avoided for a few days. You can even have the pellets inserted on your lunch break and go right back to work. Rejuvenation from the inside out, SottoPelle gives your body a custom formula of its own design. Because your own heart rate and blood flow control the amount of hormone released by the pellets, SottoPelle seamlessly emulates the ideal conditions under which your body performs best. That means you feel like you haven’t felt in years! When it’s time to make an improvement in your health and your life, contact a SottoPelle office for a consultation – and prepare to be amazed at what SottoPelle can do for you.

If you suffer from symptoms related to unsightly, painful varicose or spider veins, now you can have Healthy Veins & Beautiful Legs again. More than 1 in 3 Americans suffer from Vein Disease. Damaged veins can take many different forms, from small surface veins to large grape-like clusters. No matter what size or shape, these veins are signs of vein disease. If left untreated, they could lead to more serious issues like blood clots, ankle sores or skin ulcers, or spontaneous vein rupture. Dr. Walid Alami and Dr. Nassim Haddad have helped thousands of patients prevent and recover from diseases of the heart, arteries and veins. Through a personalized treatment plan, they will determine which treatment is best to treat your varicose veins and spider veins using the latest non-surgical technologies in their office.

TELL

I remember being 14 and staring at the cover of my Seventeen magazine, thinking that the model featured on the cover that month was absolutely gorgeous. Of course, that model was Niki Taylor, who is featured on our cover this month. I read that she had won a modeling contest, and looking at her, you knew it had to have been no contest at all. She is stunning. We are the same age, a fact that always drew me to her. I would see her on a cover, and it would remind me that while I was studying for tests and dreaming in my childhood bedroom, she was traveling the world and strutting down runways. I always loved fashion and magazines, and so it’s no surprise that my career path led me to editing fashion magazines. And who would have thought, all these many years later, that our paths would cross personally. In interviewing Niki, it was wonderful to find out that even after all she’s seen and done, she’s still refreshingly down to earth, and that one of her passions is giving back. You can read all about what she’s doing on page 64. Isn’t it interesting how life works? Fashionably yours, Michelle Glicksman Editor-in-Chief michelle@soscottsdale.com

Sporadic Child Support Payments Jodi and Eric have been divorced for three years and have two children. Eric consistently pays his child support payments late. The payments are due on the 1st of the month, but he usually pays at the end of the month, sometimes the first part of the next month, and sometimes two payments are made the next month at the same time.

of his wages), the payments would be taken out of his paycheck by his employer each time he gets paid, which would make for consistent, regular child support payments. Jodi should alert the court of Eric’s employment so a wage assignment can be entered by the court.

Andi’s advice to Dad: Technically the payments are not overdue until the first of the next month after the payment is due, but the obligation to pay child support is an order of the court that must be followed. It is important that the payments are made on time or Eric is in violation of a court order.

Movies on the Lawn It’s time again to enjoy the classics under the stars. Every Friday evening at 7:30 p.m., the Center Lawn at Biltmore Fashion Park becomes an outdoor theater throughout April with such movies as The Manchiurian Candidate, Turner & Hooch, Sleepless in Seattle, Grease and Annie Hall. 24th Street and Camelback Road; 602.955.1963; www.westcor.com.

How could you not love a place that serves Cast Iron Toasted Marshmallow S’mores? Yum! That’s just one thing you can indulge in at the new Bonfire Grill and Bar, which opened in the building where Furio had been located. Second St., 480.945.6600; www. thebonfireaz.com.

A Perfect philosophy We tip our hats to personal care brand philosophy. Located right here in the Valley, the beauty brand that we all love recently took home a slew of awards at the QVC QStar Awards, including the coveted vendor of the year award and those for outstanding customer experience and operational excellence. How could you go wrong with a company that believes that, “Science can give us better skin... but only humanity can give us better days”? www.philosphy.com.

Sweet Skin

Sugar scrubs banish lackluster skin with a healthy heap of sweetness!

F

N And on the eighth day, sugar scrubs were created. Sweet, heavenly and loaded with hydrating ingredients, sugar body scrubs whisk away dead skin cells, leaving skin with a dewy, illuminating glow. The beauty of quality scrubs is that the sugar gently lifts dead surface cells while a surge of healthy oils penetrates the skin with moisture. Sugar scrubs are easy enough to whip up at home. Just start with a cup of fine-grained white or brown sugar and mix in a carrier oil such as safflower, grape seed or jojoba until you get the consistency you want. Add a dash of orange peel if you’re feeling sassy and voilà! Or, indulge in one of these spa-inspired scrubs and polish yourself pretty.

Sephora Collection Sugar Body Scrub: The incredibly luscious texture of this brown sugar and apricot oil scrub gives skin and attitude a lift. $18 at Sephora at Scottsdale Fashion Square, 480.945.0100.

Lather Cranberry Sugar Scrub: Turbinado sugar and cranberry seeds slough away dead skin cells, while exotic oils such as kukui nut and macadamia nut deeply moisturize. $19 at Lather at Kierland Commons, 480.483.6633.

LaLicious Sugar Kiss Soufflé Scrub: An addictive combo of vanilla, citrus and rose smoothes skin with a surge of nourishing vitamins and minerals. $34 at Mozaik Skin & Body, 480.315.8088.

Whish Body Three Whishes Lavender Sugar Scrub: The trio of brown sugar, organic sugar and raspberry seeds exfoliates while organic botanicals kiss skin with a hydrated glow. $38 at Willow Stream spa at Fairmont Scottsdale Princess, 480.585.4848.

Ole Henriksen African Red Tea Exotic Body Scrub: Organic Paraguayan sugar pairs up with African red tea for an exotic and purifying experience. $65 at Sephora.

ME

By Michelle Glicksman | Photo by Darrylee Cohen

Sheba Price, A love for fashion Exotic-looking Sheba Price (who originally hails from Trinidad and Sebago), has lived in Scottsdale for most of her life. Her time revolves around her three daughters, as well as nurturing her creative side, she says. Price’s mom was always involved with fashion, and the gene definitely didn’t skip a generation. She can often be found helping someone dress for a party, making jewelry, or scrapbooking. Price, who calls her style “eccentric,” also models, acts, and writes for a New York City blog called Beyond Beauty Basics. “I love fashion,” she says. “And I love makeup. Always have, always will.” When did you first fall in love with fashion? Watching my mom attend fashion school in New York City really inspired me. When I was 10 I wanted to be my favorite singer for Halloween, so I dressed myself as Boy George! I remember having so much fun putting my outfit together, and from then on, I was into all the fashion magazines and fashion! What is one piece of fashion advice you’d like to share? You can make any outfit come alive simply by adding accessories. What is your inspiration? The inspiration for my jewelry comes from my three beautiful girls and where I am at the moment, especially when I travel. I describe My style as: My own. My staple is black pieces because I can dress up and dress down with the color and of course, accessorizing. I usually don’t follow anybody else’s rules. I dress the way I feel. If I could relive a decade, it would be: The ’50 because of all the classic pieces worn by Audrey Hepburn, Julie Andrews, Princess Grace, Marilyn Monroe, Doris Day and my favorite, Elizabeth Taylor. They wore clothing that was sexy, yet not so revealing, and very feminine.

We asked, you answered. Each month we hit the streets of Scottsdale to ask women to answer our questions. This month we headed to Scottsdale Fashion Square. This is what you had to say.

What is one trend that you wish would disappear?

“The Ed Hardy look,” says Kate Griffin, who is wearing a Rick Owens vest, H&M top, and J Brand jeans.

Linda Vives wishes, “Mixed florals or too many patterns” would disappear. She wears an Ann Taylor Loft jacket, H&M top and jeans, and Franco Sarto shoes.

Losing Weight, Gaining Ground Scottsdale’s Medi-Weightloss Clinic gets a new home The best-kept secret for making people smaller just got a whole lot bigger. It’s the very definition of irony: after helping clients successfully lose over 13,000 collective pounds in just three short years, Medi-Weightloss had begun to outgrow its Northsight Boulevard clinic. So to start 2011 out fresh – and to better serve the outpouring of people seeking a practical, workable weight loss solution – Medi-Weightloss found a new home on North Pima Road. The configuration of the larger, more conveniently located MediWeightloss clinic allows the staff to operate at top efficiency, notes owner Susie Brown. “We’re excited to hit the ground running,” she says. So excited, in fact, that for a very limited time Medi-Weightloss is offering a grand opening special: $50 off an initial consultation. And that means there’s never been a better time to experience what MediWeightloss has to offer. The Medi-Weightloss program uses a unique three-phase approach to keep the body in prime fat-burning mode. Its complete balanced nutrition and B-vitamin supplementation encourages not only weight loss – people typically lose up to twenty pounds in the first month alone – but a vast improvement in health and energy levels as well. Best of all, it’s real food for the real world, giving clients the valuable tools to make smart food choices wherever they’re dining. Under the medical supervision of Dr. L. Markham McHenry and a supportive, professional staff, the new Medi-Weightloss location is the perfect place to begin the journey to an ideal body. Bright, cheery, and open, with a positive atmosphere that instills confidence from the very first visit, clients will love the changes – and be inspired to make a change themselves. And with the grand opening special, today is the perfect opportunity to take that first step. To take advantage of the limited-time grand opening special, please contact the Medi-Weightloss Clinic today!

FATE

By Rebecca DeVaney

Look under your sign to see what eco-couture you should wear! With Mercury direct this month, you can take a break from unnecessary obligations. Of course, the stars aren’t referring to anything extreme like growing your gray out. Lord & Taylor knows, the divas of Scottsdale would rather dye!

Aries (March 21 - April 20)

Gemini (May 21 - June 20)

Knit Knickers

Green Grecian Dress

Your busy spring hasn’t been very mindful of bikini season and now extreme action is in order. Lace up those roller blades and get on the Green Belt. Just be careful not to break an arm. On second thought, that might earn you some sympathy points—not to mention, it would be a humerus accident.

When you’re in the mood for something hot, hop on over to Tottie’s Asian Fusion for a little happy hour. Not only does the bartender make the best saketinis in town, he’s also single. On the other hand, I don’t know him very well; he might have a Taipei personality.

Leo (July 21 - August 21)

Boho Blouse

If you have nothing better to do on a Tuesday afternoon, jump into a JLo velour jumpsuit and go watch a matinee of Mel Gibson’s new movie, The Beaver. Granted, it’s a ridiculous plot, but for that actor, it’s dam redeeming.

Ignore your friends who are cautioning you not to accept a date invitation with the egocentric lawyer you met at the Scottsdale Culinary Festival. Throw on a new Theory sundress and go! At some point, all men waive their hearing anyway.

VIRGO

Lucky for you, messy updos are all the rage. That convertible Carrera of yours is just crying for a cruise around town. Sometimes going fast can be more fun than going to Fashion Square with your friends who are insisting on shopping. Sometimes, you just have to put your foot down.

Think twice when leaning towards trends this month. The other ladies who lunch might not be too impressed with bluetipped nails that match your Blumarine blouse. It can be SO annoying when people let trends like nails get out of hand.

So you let your best friend wear and look beautiful in the dress you wanted to buy. Then you let her beat you to glimmering in Bobbi Brown’s luminous lip color. Stop her before she springs for a bottle of Chanel No. 5. She shouldn’t always be the scenter of attention!

Despite what Mariah Carey, Madonna and my mother say, caving in to your man-child isn’t always a bad thing. Just think of your intermediate yoga class. Bending over backwards is a major sign of strength and flexibility.

Don’t mock your friend’s tactic of meeting a young, handsome doctor by visiting an urgent care with a phantom illness. Not only did it work, but the urgent care doctors work less than real ER doctors and they’re never short-staphed.

Why continue the wah-wah with waxing when you can fry your follicles off your furry little frame? Electrolysis. Know what I’m saying? A few little zaps and snap! Your skin is smooth forever. It’s good to stay “current.”

Where it’s kind to give most men a chance, you may have learned over spring break of that notion’s impossibilities. Take your experience on the Italian Riviera with the guido in a G-string, for example. Suddenly, bongiorno is a parting word.

(April 21 - May 20)

Bamboo Bikini It’s time to take care of that aging conspiracy we’ve been hearing around town. I’m afraid it appears you’ve graced more doorsteps than the Arizona Republic. Better get Botox. The last thing you need is others reading your headlines.

What is your favorite sweet indulgence besides toffee? Barnes: My mom’s pie dough cookies…yummy! Have there been any flavors you’ve tried to create that just didn’t quite work? Barnes: Yes, Beacon toffee. A few of our customers asked, so we tried. The beacon toffee was okay but not amazing, and “okay” is not good enough for us so it didn’t make the cut. Your secret to working with family: Barnes: A good dose of vitamin L-O-V-E! Gabrilson: Be honest, keep an open mind–enjoy the journey.

Every day, mom and daughter Donna Gabrilson and Stacey Barnes work side-by-side at GoodyTwos Toffee Company in Scottsdale. The orders stream in from around the world, requesting favorites such as the Traditional (a blend of Madagascar-Bourbon vanilla, dark cacao, Belgian milk chocolate and almonds)—which is the toffee that started it all. The sweet indulgence began as a family recipe, which Gabrilson learned from her great-grandmother. “The place that I always seemed to connect to and pay attention in was in the kitchen!” Gabrilson jokes. She grew up, became a mom, and for the holidays, made the toffee recipe. daughter duo show just how “Everyone said I should make it to sell.” So after long years with corporate America, she began sweet life can be taking the toffee to local farmer’s markets. Demand grew fast, and a business was born. A few years later, Barnes joined her mom, and that’s how GoodyTwos Toffee Company came to be. (“Toffee is oh-so-goody and there are two of us, so GoodyTwos evolved,” they explain of the name.) Today, the pair has a storefront in Scottsdale, and also sells to corporate clients and appreciative toffee lovers around the world. There are 10 flavors to choose from, each lovingly made from all-natural, quality ingredients. Beyond the Traditional toffee, there are fun flavors like Double-Crossed, Nutty-Twist, Double-Trouble, Crème de la Crunch, Classic Peanut Brittle, Sweet and Salty, 2 Alarm Peanut Brittle, Comfort & Joy and Cinnfully Hazelicious. Even though they do employ a few toffee chefs now, the toffee is still made in small batches, all by hand. This, they explain, allows them to infuse really strong flavors into the toffee, so that the finished product is full-bodied and more robust. The pair loves working and creating together, enjoying the development process. “You can express your personality through your food, and that’s something we’ve done with our toffee,” explains Barnes. “I’ve worked in many jobs in corporate America over the years and I truly think I saved the best for last. It’s very rewarding,” says Gabrilson. “We’re really truly a balance–I’m more traditional, Stacey is more modern. And we always just meet in the middle.” GoodyTwos Toffee Company, 10953 N. First things first, how many pairs of shoes do you have? Oh boy, I’d say I have about 200 pairs of designerworthy shoes. And, most of them are heels! What is one of your favorite shoe collections? I would say the Gianfranco Ferré designs—those shoes transcend fashion. I love the use of styles and textures; they are truly works of art. What do you think your loves of art and fashion have in common? The way I live is to immerse myself in color and design. I view the paintings in my gallery and fashion the same—both are works of art.

In the 1980s, renowned artist Andy Warhol created a series of paintings called the “Diamond Dust Shoes” collection where he depicted colorful women’s shoes shimmering against a stark black background. Not surprisingly, the collection is a favorite of Scottsdale-based art and style maven Jacqueline Koss because it blends two of her biggest passions—classical artwork and fashionable footwear. As the owner of American Fine Art Editions, Inc., a local sees art in everything— fine arts gallery and art publishing company, Koss spends even her closet her days surrounded by colorful paintings and hand-blown glass. Then, when she heads home, she admires a gallery all her own—an impressive collection of designer shoes that are seemingly works of art within themselves. From classic Christian Louboutin to Miu Miu to Prada, Koss appreciates and collects shoes from across the globe and style continuum. “One thing about shoes is that your shoe size doesn’t change, and the same pair of shoes can be fashionable for years,” Koss says. “I usually like to dress up very classy, then have one bold piece that stands out—and because of my collection, it’s usually my shoes!” Koss’s love for art and fashion merged from a young age; as a child she would sew her own clothes and lived abroad, where was exposed to international art. Because American Fine Art Editions, Inc. is a family-owned company that has been in business for decades, she considers herself “very fortunate to have always been surrounded by art and that I get to do what I love.” “By working at the gallery and collecting beautiful shoes on my own, it’s like I’ve come full circle,” she adds. “Clothing, shoes, jewelry—they’re all works of art to me.” True to her artistic spirit, Koss has also worked as a wardrobe consultant and hopes to one day design her own fabulous collection of stunning shoes.

Who is your favorite superhero and why? Aquaman— he gets to hang out in his underwear at the beach all day. If you could be any actor who you would be? Will Ferrell. Where do you see yourself in five years? Being a leader in the community, and starting my own charitable foundation.

Joe Patti is one busy guy in Scottsdale. Even if his name doesn’t sound familiar, you’ve probably attended one of his events or seen one of his company’s advertising campaigns. Have you been to the Mercedes Benz Evening of Fashion, W Scottsdale and/or Hotel Valley Ho Fashion Shows on Water? If so, you’ve enjoyed his work—at least one aspect. Patti is the founder and CEO of J Group Media (www.jgroupmedia.com), a multi-dimensional company offering services such as fashion event planning, public relations, advertising, graphic design, media buying, event marketing and social media services. Despite the recession, J Group Media is thriving and growing. Its client roster includes such businesses as Pita Jungle, Deegie’s Carma, Isaac Jewelers, Smile Dental Group, Luxor Auto Group, Hot Air Expeditions and Parc Central. “I learned that you have to be patient—success doesn’t happen overnight,” says Patti. Have you seen the Pita Jungle bus wrap around town? That events to advertising campaigns, was Patti’s brainchild, as well. “The bus wrap was conceptualized Joe Patti is making his mark to deliver a jolt of energy in the city’s arteries,” he explains. J Group Media was recently ranked #3 in the Public Relations Firms category this year by Ranking Arizona for 2011. “It’s such a rewarding feeling when you are able to pick up a paper or magazine and see an article published on your client that you are responsible for securing. Or, being in the news station studios watching your client being interviewed and then watching the segment air on TV,” says Patti. “This is a very challenging industry to be in. You need to constantly figure out new angles to make your stories newsworthy every time you’re pitching a story for one of your clients. A lot of pressure goes into making sure your clients brand and message reaches the right target audience, and moreover, making sure they are happy at all times.” For Patti, he is living what he loves to do. After all, one of his favorite quotes is, “You never have to work a day in your life if you love what you do.”

Do you have a favorite handbag line besides your own? Carlos Falchi—he’s very unique and has a strong personality. What is the most rewarding thing about having your own line? Freedom! Fulfilling my dream while my two daughters watch me do it. How would you describe your fashion style? Very bohemian chic, relaxed and laidback...a lot of denim, basic T-shirts and tanks.

At some point in their lives, everyone has a rebirth. Whether it’s a career change, new life direction or something else, we are always changing. Lucky for us, Scottsdale resident and Designer Tracey Martin explains her new designer Tracey Martin (of the celeb-adored Rebirth handbag line children’s line Baby Butter Originals fame) decided her rebirth was as a handbag designer. She and her business partner, Steve Schlesinger of Fabtex Graphics, recently decided to take the next step in their journey, and launched Rebirth, a high-end line that utilizes different and unique fabrics, patterns and hardware. Martin has used everything from distressed leathers, suedes and premium faux fur to antique brass hardware and unique textiles for her handbags. “It’s a culmination of what I’ve been working towards,” Martin says. As a transformational life coach, she has a league of experience working with women and knows what they like. She decided on the name Rebirth because it means, “a revival of important ideas or forces, usually as a part of a broad or significant change”—a definition that resonated with her. “Inside each bag is the story of Rebirth,” Martin says. “I want people to read the story for themselves. It resonates with everyone differently, yet it fits every woman. I’ve had women read the story and it brings them to tears,” she says. Some women come from broken relationships or stressful work environments and are relieved when they come across these bags…the story gives them hope, Martin says. Martin uses Rebirth as a symbol of her own journey through life. Before starting her children’s clothing line in 2002, she worked as a personal trainer for 14 years and owned her own gym. As a transformational life coach, she works with entrepreneurial women to help them “be the person they were created to be.” The Rebirth handbags are part rock ’n’ roll and part bohemian chic. And unlike most other highend lines, no two bags are the same. Each one is incredibly well-made using only the highest quality fabrics and textiles from around the world. Ingeniously, most of the detail designs used are strategically recycled from Martin’s line of children’s clothing. Rebirth is mainly a handbag line but will also include accessories, starting with scarves, and sets itself apart from other lines by its attention to different fabrics, patterns and hardware. View the line at www.rebirthstyle.com or email tracey@rebirthstyle.com.

Supermodel Niki Taylor doesn’t let competing on Celebrity Apprentice, touring the country for the “We Hear You America” tour, modeling, charity work, and raising three kids slow her down

s one of the most beautiful women in the world, it’s difficult to not have seen or heard of Niki Taylor. A supermodel who was first signed at age 13, then went on to win the Fresh Faces modeling contest, and then landed her first magazine cover (Seventeen) by age 14, her rise to stardom came swiftly and surely—and she never looked back. It’s now been 20-plus years of hard work and monumental accomplishments. Taylor was the first spokesmodel younger than 18 to sign a major contract with CoverGirl (and she was with them for 10 years!), and her face has graced ad campaigns for companies such as Pantene, Liz Claiborne, Ellen Tracey, L’Oréal, GAP, Lee Jeans, Nokia and more. In May of 1996, she set a record by gracing the cover of six of America’s most prominent fashion and fitness magazines in the same month, which became known as the “Niki Six.” Beyond magazines and ad campaigns, Taylor has also been featured on television with such programs as Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous, Fashionably Loud, and various segments on NBC. Her career was briefly put on hold in 2001 when she was critically injured in a car accident that left her unconscious for six weeks and bedridden for an additional month. She endured approximately 56 operations and extensive physical therapy. Not one to slow down, Taylor was quickly back and working again, and has also since opened a clothing store in Tennessee, launched a fragrance (Begin by Niki Taylor), co-hosted the show Make Me a Supermodel, and more. Today, you can catch her on the latest season of Celebrity Apprentice, as well as criss-crossing America on the Reader’s Digest “We Hear You America” tour. Her stop in Phoenix was in late March. Of course, she does this all while also balancing her family life—she’s married to NASCAR driver Burney Lamar, and has three children, 16-year-old twin sons Jake and Hunter (whom she had with first husband Matt Martinez) and 1-year-old daughter Ciel (with Lamar). We sat down with her to talk about her career, the paths she has chosen, her beauty tips, and more.

You are one of those people who had the “modeling dream” come true—although you had already been signed to an agency, you did win a modeling contest and contract, and quickly became a supermodel. What was it like going from a typical teen to appearing on national magazine covers? It was a dream come true! I feel so blessed in my life to have the career I started at such a young age and to still be working—wow! It is awesome, simply awesome! In May of 1996, you appeared on an unprecedented six covers in one month (Allure, Vogue, Elle, Self, Shape and Marie Claire). What was it like to walk past a newsstand and see so many photos of yourself at one time? I was in shock. It was almost surreal! The “Niki Six” was an incredible blessing in my professional life and definitely a career highlight. What are you most grateful for in your career? There is not just one thing I am grateful for in my career—there are so many things, including getting to travel all over the world, and working with amazing people and incredible companies. Sometimes I pinch myself and say, “Wow, what an incredible job I have.” In your life? Just like in my professional life, there are many things I am grateful for in my personal life. I have an amazing husband, Burney Lamar, three beautiful, healthy children, a wonderful family...the list goes on! What have you felt was the toughest part of a modeling career? The toughest part of my modeling career was definitely when I was younger after having my twin boys at 19. I was a single mom juggling two infants and a booming modeling career. That was a very hard time, but a time that I learned so much from. Being able to balance my professional and personal life, and that is a lesson I wouldn’t give up for anything. You’re 36—it’s so wonderful to see a beautiful, self-confident and positive woman still so celebrated and spotlighted in an industry that used to cater more towards a younger demographic. Have you seen a behind-the-scenes shift in the industry? Yes, the industry has shifted to featuring actors/actresses on the covers of magazines promoting their movies, rather than models. That is probably the biggest change I have seen during my 20 years in the business. In addition to modeling, you’ve been a television host, opened a clothing store (Abbie and Jesse’s in Tennessee) and launched a fragrance. What drives you? I have been in this industry for two decades now (hard to believe)

[Parenting children of different ages] is really crazy all the time! There is never a dull moment and I am enjoying my children at all stages—both driving and potty training!

How, if at all, did the accident from 2001 change you as a person? I became more of a daredevil. I know that may sound strange to some, but I realized life is too short not to live it to the fullest! You are very involved with charities. How did you choose the ones you are involved with? I am primarily involved with four charities–The American Red Cross, The Kyle Petty Charity Ride, ARVD, and Mercy Ministries–and my reasoning for each are a little bit different. The American Red Cross plain and simple helped save my life after the accident. Without the blood and blood products The American Red Cross provided, I would not have survived! I owe them my life and try to give back as much as possible. The Kyle Petty Charity Ride is close to my heart because it encompasses two things I love, children and riding my motorcycle—enough said. ARVD, or Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Dysplasia, is what my sister, Krissy, suddenly died from in 1995. Charities that focus on research and outreach for this deadly disorder are something that I am passionate about. Lastly, Mercy Ministries provides help at no cost to struggling young women, and that is definitely something I will always stand behind.

I became more of a daredevil. I know that may sound strange to some, but I realized life is too short not to live it to the fullest! What drives you to give back? I have been given so much, how can I not give back? I am all about paying it forward. It is how I live my life. You are currently involved in Reader’s Digest’s “We Hear You America” tour. How did you become involved with them? Reader’s Digest is investing in America and I am the “All-American” girl—down-to-earth and just a normal American woman. I remember

but I love it and that is what drives me every day. I love modeling, I enjoy behind-thescenes work, I embrace it all. helped save my life, The American Red Cross, and that is what truly drives me in the competition. How does competing in the challenges compare to your own professional ventures? You always want to have success in life, professionally and personally, and competing on this show you experience that. You realize you do not always “win.” There are people out there that are simply better than you at certain things. You win some challenges and you lose some, just like in life! When you have “time off” (rare moments, I’m sure!), and are home with your family, what do you like to be doing? When I have “time off” I like the simple things: spending time with my husband

The toughest part of my modeling career was definitely when I was younger after having my twin boys at 19. I was a single mom juggling two infants and a booming modeling career. That was a very hard time, but a time that I learned so much from. Being able to balance my professional and personal life, and that is a lesson I wouldn’t give up for anything. my parents having Reader’s Digest around the house when I was growing up and have read the magazine for years. When asked to participate in their tour I was happy to accept the invitation! Can you tell us what this 100-city tour hopes to accomplish? Reader’s Digest, through the “We Hear You America” tour, is giving $7.5 million dollars of promotional and financial support to towns that have been affected by the recession and the economic downturn. We are visiting 100 cities in 100 days to pass out the funding and experience the best towns America has to offer! While you do this, you are also competing on Celebrity Apprentice. What is that experience like? The experience definitely brought me out of my comfort zone. There were many things on the show I did not expect, but I had an amazing time! Through the show I am able to give back to the charity which

and kids, cooking, being outside. There is nothing better than relaxing at home, surrounded by my family. You have teenagers and a toddler—what is it like parenting to different age groups? It is really crazy all the time! There is never a dull moment and I am enjoying my children at all stages—both driving and potty training! You always look gorgeous! Do you have any skin and/or makeup tricks you can share? Very simple—lots of sleep and lots of H20! What do you hope you see realized as the next step in your life? First and foremost, I want a happy, healthy family. Secondly, I’d like to build a brand that reaches the everyday woman because that is truly who I am.

Alison Bailin Batz waits for the Grapeline bus during a trip to Temecula. It’s a perfect way to travel from winery to winery.

Easy Ways to

Wine Down

Making sense of wine country—the low-down on where to go

Looking to get away for a weekend of wine but have no idea where to start? Or, perhaps you know where you want to go (California Wine Country comes to mind), but with some regions containing hundreds of vineyards, you have no idea how you’re going to possibly fit it all in? Then why not plan it like a field trip—only without the kids (or permission slips!). Think about it—a field trip focuses on one or two main

highlights or one major event for the kids so they can experience a wide range of the area they are visiting. For example, many Scottsdale schools send their sixth graders to Catalina for very specific oceanic adventures. And, many Paradise Valley schools send high schoolers on trips to Disneyland for a taste of a themed event, like its Haunted Halloweens. So, why not do the same for yourself? A little foresight and planning can help make your next weekend away one to remember.

If a little luxury is a must, visit South Coast Winery and Wilson Creek for their resortlike atmospheres among the vines—and their sparkling wines! to up to 13 wineries each day, even taking care of carrying any purchases back to the bus for you. Its guides have the inside details of each winemaker, as well as tips for the best dining and spa-going in the area. Although winemaking in the region technically dates back Or, if a little luxury is a must, visit South Coast Winery to 1796 when residents would plant grapes at their Missions, the and Wilson Creek for their resort-like atmospheres among the area truly began to be recognized in the late 1960s and 1970s vines—and their sparkling wines! with famed Calloway Winery making the first big mark. Since then, the area has become home to more than 30 wineries—some connected to luxury resorts, casinos and even spas. But, how does one fit in 30 wineries in one weekend? In the past decade, Paso Robles along the Central Coast has made its mark in Scottsdale in a big way. It is nearly impossible to visit a local restaurant, resort or wine bar without at least Field Trip Tips a few notable Paso Robles options to choose from, including Believe it or not, it is possible to visit nearly all of the wineries Cass Winery, Eberle Winery, J. Attendees enjoy the Paso Robles Wine Festival Weekend.

The Wine Festival is major—and amazing—but we also get a lot of out-of-towners taking advantage of individual events at each vineyard during this time. Field Trip Tips According to the Paso Robles Wine Country Alliance, which visited the Valley recently as part of a Grand Tasting Week in Scottsdale, most people who visit fall into two categories: the party crowd and the relaxed crowd. “When we’re asked by visitors from out of state how to best navigate our hundreds of wineries, I always try to determine which category they fall into,” says Christopher Taranto. For the party crowd and those looking to maximize their time, the Wine Festival Weekend in May is the way to go, he suggests. Like with Temecula’s Wine Weekends, all of the wineries get together for one wild weekend. However, this event physically brings together the wineries in the region’s largest park for some fun in the sun. You simply purchase one ticket, and it grants general access to all the fun. But, if you fall into the more relaxed crowd, that same weekend offers something special, as well. “The Wine Festival is major—and amazing—but we also get a lot of out-of-towners taking advantage of individual events at each vineyard during this time,” Taranto explains. “This can include any-

thing from watching the owner of the winery barbecue pork ribs for you at Eberle Winery to kicking back with the actual winemakers themselves as they take breaks from the festival.” Other options, just as with Temecula, should focus on what you like to do. If you are into the outdoors, the region partners with several jeep companies to offer unique tour experiences. Think of it like Sedona’s Pink Jeep Tours, with a side of grapes! Or if you like pooches, for example, each year Cass Winery puts on a grape stomp to benefit the local Humane Society, where everyone from kids to 20-somethings to grandparents stomp until their feet are stained purple. The possibilities are endless.

Costco: Food, fashion and socializing! Oh Costco, how I love thee. I have been a Costco devotee for 20 years, since the time when the only Costco in town was at Scottsdale Airpark and it wasn’t called Costco, but Price Club. I have long said that Costco is perhaps my favorite store in all of Scottsdale. From designer items such as 7 for all Mankind jeans; Yves St. Laurent perfume; Elizabeth Arden creams; and Fendi, Dolce & Gabbana, Dior and even, sometimes, Louis Vuitton handbags, my fashion and beauty fix could be complete. Costco is like one of those all-inclusive resorts that has everything you could possible need to have a good time without having to leave the comfort of your room. Oh sure, there was that movie a few years back where Natalie Portman lived (and gave birth, ick) at Wal-Mart. But in my mind, the Airpark Costco is a five-star resort experience. And Costco sells in bulk. This means I could very comfortably stay for an extended period of time. Besides fashion and beauty items, they also have bedding, linens, entertainment (in the form of televisions, DVDs, books, music, cameras and Apple products), and enough food to feed the army of a midsized third world country. And they have booze. Honestly—what more could a girl want? Oh—and the samples! Any Costco member who says that they have never “had lunch at Costco” and then systematically worked their way up and down each aisle partaking in all that the sample people have to offer is lying. I have seen people of all ages, shapes and sizes elbow their way to the front of sample line, lest they miss out on a bite-size piece of smoked turkey. On more than one occasion my dad has leveraged his grandchildren for

extra samples, kindly asking the sample lady if he could have “just one more sample of the mango mousse for his granddaughter” (cue to super-cute child grinning from the cart). Whether it was for him or her still remains to be seen. Plus, it’s better than any all-you-can eat buffet in Cacún. Another reason I love the Airpark Costco is for the socializing. Head on over on a Saturday or Sunday and you never know who you will see. I’ve served on few committees that get better attendance at their regularly scheduled meetings than Costco on a Saturday afternoon. Between the samples and the socializing, it’s like happy hour. Over the years, other Costcos have opened around town. But I am nothing if not loyal, and my loyalties are with the Costco at Scottsdale Airpark. The summer I was pregnant with my twins I spent many an afternoon munching on samples while cooling off in the produce room. It was my own private cabana. Then there was the time that I was hosting a large family gathering and the caterer “lost” my order. An hour before guests arrived, my sister and I sped to our favorite Costco and loaded up on fruit and vegetable trays, smoked salmon, cheese, and desserts. One-stop shopping and our guests never knew the difference. Restaurants in Scottsdale may come and go, but the $1.50 hot dog and drink is arguably the best meal in town. So who is joining me for a staycation this weekend?

Eco in Scottsdale In a city where so many have been lured by the weather and beautiful landscape, the love of nature has trickled down to the products and places we utilize, as well. With a nod to Mother Nature, here are three unexpected eco-friendly finds.

Sleep Well Coming soon to North Scottsdale: An upscale eco-resort. For those who want to lounge in luxury, but be environmentally conscious about it, you’ll enjoy the Reserve Eco-Resort. As planned, the resort will feature 180 hotel rooms, 127 villas and 17 estates on 213 acres northeast of 118th Street and Rio Verde Drive. The Scottsdale City Council recently approved a General Plan amendment and rezoning for the project, which is developed by Lyle Anderson. The luxury project emphasizes wellness in an environmentally friendly setting overlooking the Golf Club Scottsdale and McDowell Sonoran Preserve, and would merge sustainability with luxury. Included in the plans are a world-class spa, and health and wellness center. Up next: The developer will submit a site plan and project elevations for the Council to approve.
