1 Participation in Commencement and inclusion in the commencement program does not guarantee official granting of a degree. The Registrar’s Office verifies completion of all requirements before a degree is conferred. The official document verifying degree completion is the Pacific University transcript. Names published in this commencement program include all students who applied for a degree by the posted deadline. Welcome
Today is a celebration of all that our students have accomplished throughout the long and challenging journey for their degrees. It is a celebration of the friends, family, professors, and staff members who have encouraged and supported them along the way.
And it is a celebration of the essence of education itself — of the discovery that drives us to new ideas, the enlightenment that comes from seeing a new perspective, the opportunity that comes from an investment in knowledge and learning.
It is a celebration and acknowledgment of all those who have come before us, on whose shoulders we stand, as well as those who will follow.
Mostly, though, today we celebrate each of you, our graduates. We are so proud of you. I hope that you will remember the excitement of discovery, the challenge of tackling a difficult project, and the thrill of achieving a goal.
We hope that you will move forward on a life-long process of growth, that you will nurture and sustain a love of learning, and that you will pass the excitement and the opportunity of education on to others whenever possible.
Congratulations from the entire Pacific University family!
Warmest Regards,

WEARING ACADEMIC REGALIA
is a custom with origins in the medieval European universities, where it was required as daily wear to serve as a reminder of a person’s role in the academic community. Most American colleges and universities have since adopted the cap, gown and hood to wear exclusively at particular ceremonies.
Masters and doctors wear a hood lined with colors of the degree-granting institution, or lined with a color of an institution represented by the wearer. The hoods are trimmed in velvet with a color distinctive of the degree. Hoods of gowns at Pacific University are lined in black, with scarlet chevrons.
THE ACADEMIC MACE symbolizes the authority vested in the president by the Board of Trustees. The university’s mace was commissioned by President Emeritus Phillip D. Creighton to commemorate his investiture in 2003 and was crafted from white oak from the Forest Grove Campus. It is now a treasured university artifact and is incorporated in the official academic ceremonies of Commencement, Convocation and presidential investitures.

PACIFIC UNIVERSITY
Academic Regalia
THE ACADEMIC PROCESSION has evolved through the years from the 12th century, when everyday university dress consisted of a long gown or robe often covered by a full-length cloak with a cowl. The cowl was the forerunner of today’s colorful hood, worn by faculty during the procession.
SINCE 1865, colleges and universities in the United States have followed a uniform code which specifies the correct type of regalia for each degree.

THE PRESIDENTIAL CHAIN OF OFFICE is worn by the president on official university occasions and is symbolic of the authority vested in the president by the Board of Trustees. The medallion features the official seal on one side and a depiction of Old College Hall — the university’s first building constructed in 1850 — on the other side.
THE GONFALON is a flag that hangs from a crosspiece or frame, originated in the medieval republics of Italy as an ensign of state or office. Gonfalons have been adopted in many universities around the world as college or institutional insignia. At Pacific, the traditional gonfalon is represented in the college banner that hang behind the stage.
