Pacific Symphony’s purpose is to nourish, nurture, and lift the human spirit and forge a community where everyone belongs. Its mission is to perform inspiring, entertaining, and healing music, connect communities through diverse programming, inspire youth, provide therapeutic benefits, and promote the well-being of the people of Southern California.

LETTER FROM THE CHAIRMAN AND THE PRESIDENT

Dear Pacific Symphony Patrons:

We fondly look back at an incredible 2024–25 season which was filled with many memorable musical moments, exemplary education and community engagement programs, and a continuing commitment to the local communities and neighborhoods of Orange County. More importantly, the season offered us the opportunity to celebrate Carl St.Clair’s amazing 35-year tenure as Music Director and to honor his many achievements as our visionary artistic leader.

We are pleased to enclose a brief summary of Pacific Symphony’s accomplishments during the year and the orchestra’s impact on our community. In an effort to continue to build audiences and reach new artistic heights, we are happily meeting our fundraising goals. Last year, the Symphony raised the most money ever for its Annual Fund through dedicated and loyal patrons, subscribers, and donors. We thank you for this outpouring of support which is responsible for our achievements during the year.

Last November, the orchestra was thrilled to announce the appointment of Artistic and Music Director Designate Alexander Shelley who made his official debut in a triumphant concert in May 2025. His expressive leadership and technical brilliance earned an enthusiastic response and critical accolades. Maestro Shelley becomes only the third Music Director in Pacific Symphony’s 47-year history.

In the following pages, we are pleased to share an overview of Pacific Symphony’s fiscal year which includes highlights from the season, education program results, marketing high points, and community engagement accolades. We’ve also put together a selected list of Carl’s 35 greatest accomplishments. The enclosed information also showcases the Symphony’s many strengths alongside the critical role you play in making our success possible. As a leader in the performing arts field, Pacific Symphony takes pride in including in its family of supporters the dedicated donors, subscribers, and friends who are responsible for our triumphs during the year.

We have much to be thankful for, and our patrons add to the inspiration of our work through their commitment, dedication, and generosity as they are the cornerstone of our every victory. Investing in innovative programming, new music commissions, and presenting stellar international artists and essential community programming is not possible without your support. We are deeply grateful to our board of directors, board of counselors, corps of volunteers, and all the many support organizations and donors who focus their time and talent on our success.

Thank you for all that you do for Pacific Symphony.

ALEXANDER SHELLEY APPOINTED ARTISTIC AND MUSIC DIRECTOR

In November 2024, Pacific Symphony announced the appointment of Alexander Shelley as the orchestra’s Artistic and Music Director beginning in the 2026–27 season. Maestro Shelley serves as Artistic and Music Director Designate throughout the 2025–26 season before assuming full artistic leadership in 2026–27. Shelley succeeds Carl St.Clair, who is Music Director Laureate in 2025–26, in order to provide a seamless leadership transition.

The appointment of Maestro Shelley marks a significant inflection point in Pacific Symphony’s legacy as its third-ever artistic leader. An international search was led by a committee chaired by Board Executive Vice Chair Mark Nielsen, which evaluated numerous guest conductors and received input from the orchestra’s musicians. Shelley has served as both Music Director of the National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa, Canada and Principal Associate Conductor of London’s Royal Philharmonic Orchestra since 2015. In 2023, he was also named Artistic and Music Director at Artis–Naples in Florida, leading the Naples Philharmonic.

JOY

FOR 35 YEARS

LETTER FROM CARL ST.CLAIR

Dear Friends,

It has been my joy and privilege to look back on this historic 35th Anniversary season. While the gift of great music has enriched our lives each year, it is the spirit of giving, the leadership and passion of those who make Pacific Symphony great that has made this year so very special. I want to thank our patrons and donors for your continued support of this extraordinary institution. I am grateful to our Board of Directors for your vision and steadfast stewardship, and, in particular, to Arthur Ong, our Chairman of the Board, for his remarkable leadership during this time of transition for the Symphony. I also want to express my heartfelt gratitude to the Hal and Jeanette Segerstrom family, who have underwritten our Classical Series for 24 years, and whose generosity has been a cornerstone of our artistic growth, and to Phil and Mary Lyons, who have made a transformational commitment to the Symphony this year with their $10 million endowment gift, the largest in our history. These are just a few of the families who have opened their hearts so generously, and whose contributions to the endowment help us to pursue our artistic dreams.

I must also thank our extraordinary staff, whose commitment and hard work make each and every concert possible. And to the supremely talented musicians of Pacific Symphony—the heart and soul of this organization— your artistry has lifted my spirit for 35 unforgettable years. It has been one of the great honors of my life to make music with you.

This season was also one of great optimism for our future as we welcomed Artistic and Music Director Designate Alexander Shelley to the podium. Alexander is a musician of exceptional talent, vision, and humanity, and I am truly excited for the Symphony’s next chapter under his artistic leadership. I look forward to supporting him in any way I can as he shapes a bold future for this orchestra and for our community.

The chance to welcome some of the world’s most celebrated artists to the stage of the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall has been a particular thrill for me this season. The list is a long one, but it begins with the musicians of Pacific Symphony, whose dedication and musical excellence continue to inspire me. Joshua Bell returned to our stage this year with his wife, soprano Larisa Martinez, for a breathtaking performance of The Voice and the Violin. Jeffrey Biegel delivered a dazzling world premiere of Adolphus Hailstork’s Piano Concerto No. 3, while our gifted Composer-in-Residence Viet Cuong captivated audiences with the premiere of Marine Layer Our Spring celebrations were filled with artistry reflecting the cultural richness of our community. We welcomed Joyce Yang (piano), Bei Bei Monter (guzheng), and Yang Liu (erhu) for Lunar New Year, and the Pournazeri Trio— along with vocalists Sahar Boroujerdi and Donya Kamali and violinist Tina Jamegarmi—for Nowruz: Iranian New Year. This was also the year we reached one of the most significant milestones of my career here: our first-ever performance of Wagner’s Ring Cycle with Das Rheingold. For more than a decade, our production and operations team has brought semi-staged opera to life at a world-class level, and this year was no exception. With Kyle Albertson as Wotan, Renée Tatum as Fricka, Nathan Berg as Alberich, and our magnificent orchestra conquering Wagner’s epic score, it was an unforgettable achievement.

I am the luckiest conductor and music director in the world to have taken this journey with you—to honor our past and celebrate artistic excellence, to expand access to music for all, and to build programs that will inspire generations to come. Thank you for walking this path with me, and for believing in the power of music to move humanity forward.

With deepest appreciation, Carl St.Clair

• Newly appointed Artistic and Music Director Designate Alexander Shelley returned to conduct Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony

• Celebrated Black History Month with a multimedia concert entitled “Symphonic Soul: A Celebration of African American Artistry,” curated by Arts & Learning Conservatory Founder Deborah Wondercheck blending classical, jazz, spirituals, and opera and celebrating the brilliance of renowned musicians, singers, and composers.

• Featured stellar artists during the year with such guest conductors as Rune Bergmann, Paolo Bortolameolli, and Valentina Peleggi; violinists Vadim Gluzman, Jennifer Koh, and our concertmaster Dennis Kim; pianists Jeffrey Biegel, Claire Huangci, George Li, and Benjamin Pasternack; organist Paul Jacobs; and principal violist Meredith Crawford.

• Highlighted the many talents of Principal Pops Conductor Enrico Lopez-Yañez who led six series engagements that featured the stars Bernadette Peters, Joss Stone, and Ben Folds, as well as the Cirque Goes Broadway spectacle.

• Produced its first Wagner opera in a semi-staged version of Das Rheingold, an ambitious undertaking with increased artistic personnel and a challenging score. Classical Voice said St.Clair conducted “with great emotion, spiritual force and breadth of vision,” leading the orchestra into “immaculate and powerful playing.”

• Concluded the season with four performances of Verdi’s Requiem chosen by Carl as his final program. He led concerts featuring Raquel Gonzalez, Daryl Freedman, Won Whi Choi, Zaikuan Song, and Pacific Chorale. The Maestro said that the Requiem had the ability to fully represent the depth and breadth of his 35-year tenure.

Heartstrings Instrumental Music programs included musical instrument instruction, coaching and mentoring at six sites in Orange County through three discrete programs:

Savanna School District: Now in its third year of partnership, Savanna Strings continues to rebuild a free, afterschool music program at four elementary schools in Anaheim for grade 4–6 students. This season expanded to include viola and cello (as well as violin), allowing each school to have its own string orchestra. Enrollment reached a program record of 160 students this season.

Orangeview Junior High School: The 2024–25 season marked an exciting new partnership with this middle school in the Anaheim Union School District for 33 motivated students lacking access to private instruction. Youth musicians received weekly small-group coaching from Symphony musicians on violin, cello, trumpet and trombone during school hours. Coaching focused on building technical abilities to prepare them for high school music programs.

Santa Ana High School: Pacific Symphony has partnered with Santa Ana High for four years to offer intensive private lessons from Symphony musicians (in fact the Santa Ana Strings program started here in 2012). A total of 19 string, wind and brass students participated during school hours. For the first time, an application and audition process was required for admission to more effectively identify students who are pursuing music after graduation. There were 30 applications received, with 63% accepted into this unequaled program.

Susan Samueli Integrative Health Institute

Pacific Symphony was awarded a grant this year from the Samueli Foundation to conduct research in partnership with the Susan Samueli Integrative Health Institute. The project aims to explore the impact of live chamber and orchestral music performances on patient well-being within clinical and concert hall settings, building a strong foundation for future integrative health practices. The results and impact from this pilot study are currently being evaluated and will help guide future studies both inside and outside of the concert hall.

Studies last season included 34 patients who attended May 2025 concerts at the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall. This pilot study was designed to evaluate the feasibility and impact of a live, in-person classical music concert in two groups:

a) participants who attended and listened to music as usual; labeled “listening group;” and b) participants who were given instructions to mindfully listen to the music; labeled “mindful listening group.” Participants were asked to complete pre-concert and postconcert surveys asking them to rate the intensity of their pain, anxiety, stress, perceived stress, and quality of life.

Patient participants reported immediate improvements in stress, anxiety, and pain in postconcert surveys compared to pre-concert scores. One week later, participants also reported a significant improvement in depression symptoms. Audience feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with many describing feelings of relaxation, calm, joy, and comfort. These results suggest that even a single live orchestral experience may offer meaningful short-term relief for stress-related symptoms.

Pacific Symphony Youth Ensembles

Serving 320 student participants, and more than 10,000 audience members, PACIFIC SYMPHONY YOUTH ENSEMBLES (PSYE) is comprised of four performing ensembles. Out of more than 650 talented sixth through twelfth graders who auditioned to participate last year, 320 were selected to join the pre-professional musical training program. The season featured clinics with Music Director Carl St.Clair, regular coaching sessions with Symphony musicians, interactions with world-renowned guest artists, and 10 PSYE performances in the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall. All four of the ensembles’ final May concerts were warmly dedicated to Elizabeth Stahr, longtime PSYE benefactor and PSYE Lifetime Board Director who recently passed away.
