Tech Trek girls camp returns to Tillamook Thanks to a $10,000 grant from AAUW, Tech Trek in Tillamook will return in the summer of 2015. This week-long science and math camp for 8th grade girls is the only one like it in the state of Oregon.

Camp is held on the Tillamook Bay Community College campus and the Tillamook County Fairgrounds 4-H dorm from June 21-26. Thanks to the AAUW grant and other donations, the cost for each camper is only $50 for the entire week.

Last year, 34 girls from around the area attended the camp and learned about career possibilities for women in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields.

“Tech Trek was life changing for me,” said Maria Heyen, a Tech Trek camper from Warrenton Grade School.

“It opened my eyes to new, exciting careers that Oregon, the nation and the world have to offer.”

To be considered for next year’s camp, girls must be nominated by their science or math teacher before Dec. 19 and be entering 8th grade in the fall of 2015. After each girl completes an initial application, they will be interviewed by

a committee who will select about 30 campers to participate.

The Tech Trek campers will learn about math, science, and technology by collecting field data from the beaches and forests of Tillamook County; performing experiments and hands-on-activities both in the field and in a college lab; and meeting female role models who work in STEM fields.

Because girls and women are continuously underrepresented in STEM fields, Tech Trek empowers girls to begin a successful path toward pursuing a career in STEM. During camp girls will witness firsthand how exciting and diverse STEM careers can be, and gain the interest, excitement and self-confidence needed to be successful in these roles.

“I learned all about women, what we can accomplish and what we can give to the world,” Heyen said. “Tech Trek taught me so much and helped me grow as a person... I believe that every girl should have this experience.”

In what is being characterized as a continued effort to ensure the safety of residents living and working in coastal areas, on Nov. 18 members of Congress from South Carolina joined Oregon lawmakers in calling on the U.S. Coast Guard to keep facilities in Oregon and South Carolina from closing next month.

Senators Ron Wyden, D-Ore., Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., Tim Scott, RS.C., and Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., and Representatives Kurt Schrader, D-Ore., Peter DeFazio, D-Ore., Suzanne Bonamici, D-Ore., Earl Blumenauer, D-Ore., Mark Sanford, R-S.C., and Tom Rice, R-S.C., signed the letter urging the Coast Guard to reverse its abrupt announcement from October that it would close facilities in Newport, Oregon and Charleston, South Carolina. Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif., chairman of the House Subcommittee on Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation, also signed the letter.

“We believe that the United States Coast Guard’s decision to close air facilities in Newport, Oregon and Charleston, South Carolina would needlessly endanger mariners in our respective states and we urge you to prevent the Coast Guard from doing so,” the lawmakers wrote in the letter.

While the Coast Guard claims that it will still be able to meet the national standard of a two-hour search-and-rescue response time, the lawmakers argue that fewer assets could lengthen response times and threaten the safety of local mariners.

“While we strongly support efforts to spend federal dollars more efficiently, we cannot support budget cuts that needlessly jeopardize the lives of our constituents.

We therefore urge you to reevaluate the Coast Guard’s decision and to prevent the Coast Guard from closing these air facilities,” they wrote.

In response to previous calls from Oregon and South Carolina lawmakers, the Coast Guard announced it would delay the Dec. 1 closure of the Newport and Charleston facilities until Dec. 15.

Newport houses National Oceanic and Atmospheric vessels and Oregon’s largest commercial fishing fleet, in addition to research vessels from Oregon State University.

Charleston is one of the nation’s busiest cargo ports, and is home to a robust tourism industry as well as large shrimp, crab and oyster fleets.

Hatchery research center board seeks new member to represent independent science The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife is seeking a new Board member to represent the independent science community on the Oregon Hatchery Research Center Board. As directed by HB 3441, the independent science member shall have scientific background related to fish management and the propagation of hatchery fish. The successful candidate will serve a four year term.

The Board is charged with advising the OHRC Director on operational, budget and research priorities at the research center. Additional details about the Board’s responsibilities can be found in HB 3441, available on the ODFW web site.

Candidates must submit an application and provide three references by Dec.

24. The ODFW director will appoint the new member by Jan. 10, 2015. The application is available on the ODFW web site.

The OHRC is a cooperative research project between ODFW and OSU. The center’s mission is to develop an understanding of the mechanisms that may create differences between hatchery and wild fish, and devise ways to reduce and manage the differences so that hatcheries can be used responsibly in the conservation and management of Oregon’s native fish.

Mixed News for South County

Total TLT revenues look great, but requirement for grant process may create wrinkle for unincorporated areas

here was good news and not-so-good news for South County announced at the Nov. 18 board meeting of the Tillamook County Economic Development Council, which runs the Transient Lodging Tax-funded tourism project.

In the good-news department, the TLT is continuing to produce more revenue than anticipated, meaning the Visit Tillamook Coast project could offer substantial grants for tourism-related facilities around the county.

However, those facilities grants will only go to governmental entities, so unincorporated areas like Pacific City will need to affiliate with governments to seek grants, while incorporated cities will enter the competition with no such hurdle.

Also announced at the meeting was some ironic news: Incoming tourism director Nan Devlin had been plowed into by tourists in a traffic accident in Tillamook. “Nobody was hurt,” Devlin said, describing how her car was hit by a vehicle carrying a stressed-out tourist couple, who had swerved across traffic in a misguided attempt to find the air museum.

“My car was crunched.”

The update on TLT revenues and policies was provided by EDC board chair Doug Olson, owner of The Inn at Pacific City. The rosy financial picture continued a series of better-than-expected briefings as the voter-approved tax nears its first birthday.

With overdue third-quarter TLT remittances still dribbling in, Olson said the TLT is on track to bring in as much as $2.5 million for its first full year of operation. If that total is reached, the portion going to the Visit Tillamook Coast tourism project would be $1.75 million, considerably higher than the initial projections of about $1 million.

“That means there can be a much larger and more aggressive investment in both marketing and tourism-related facilities,” Olson said.

However, after weeks of back-and-forth with county officials, Olson said the county has settled on a policy of limiting TLT grants for tourism facilities — aka infrastructure money — to governmental entities.

Those entities could include incorporated cities, the county itself, or special districts such as fire, recreation or water districts.

The county’s decision to limit facilities grants to governmental entities was based on risk management, Olson said, and will require grant applicants from throughout South County to affiliate with governmental entities to seek any of the funding.

Tillamook County’s seven incorporated cities — all located in the central or northern parts of the county — will not need to solicit such an arrangement before asking for grants. Also, since incorporated cities have revenue, they could have a head start in supplying the matching funds that are likely to be crucial for

entities seeking facilities grants.

Olson renewed his push to spend tourism money sooner rather than later. The tourism initiative had more than $600,000 in the bank at the time of the meeting, and the process of making facilities grants is stalled for now as a panel from the county’s Tourism Advisory Committee tries to hash out rules and standards for grant applications.

“I’ve heard from an awful lot of people who would like to see something, even a very modest program,” Olson said as he urged spending some facilities money as early as next spring.

“Let’s say we decided we’d like to put $300,000 to work yet this spring. That could be done,” provided the TAC has fine-tuned the grant criteria in time, Olson said.

Olson said there’s nothing bad about deciding how to spend more money than was expected. “We solved the problem of how to get it,” he said. “Now we’ve got to figure out how to spend it.”

Devlin briefed the EDC board on some elements of a consultant’s “benchmarking” study that measured public awareness of Tillamook County as a tourism destination, following up on the consultant’s presentation earlier to the TAC. The study was based on responses from people in the Seattle, Portland and Eugene areas, and Devlin noted the surprising fact that 14 percent of respondents connected Tillamook County with its tourism tagline — “It’s the natural choice” — despite the fact that the tagline had received little promotion at the time of the September survey.

Devlin said asking survey respondents where they had seen Visit Tillamook Coast advertisements revealed more about respondents’ media preferences than it did about where they had actually seen the ads. “I love this,” Devlin said, referring to the fact that 30 percent of respondents said they had seen the ads in print media, despite the fact that the promotions had only appeared online and on cable television.

“The thing that’s kind of cool about this,” Devlin said, is that it reveals what kind of media the respondents prefer, regardless of the accuracy of their memories. “This tells us what kind of media they’re using,” she said. “This is pretty valuable information.”

EDC board member and Tillamook Bay Community College president Connie Green brought her colleagues up to speed on the search for a new EDC executive director, as current director Dan Biggs prepares to step down at the end of the year.

Green asked fellow board members to keep time open on Dec. 3 and Dec. 9 for interviewing candidates. Candidates come from both the local area and other areas, she said.

After discussion about board members’ availability, Green said she would try to get all candidates scheduled for Dec. 3. “I am being pushy,” she said. “I want to make sure I get this done before the holidays.”

he Nestucca Bay National Wildlife Refuge is home to all kinds of flora and fauna and sweeping ocean views, but it was a first for the wildlife refuge when, on Nov. 9, volunteer Lee Sliman spotted the first confirmed Tundra Bean-Goose seen in the lower 48 states.

“This is what we would call mega rare,” said Dawn Harris, visitor services manager at the Oregon Coast National Wildlife complex, a network of refuges along the coast that includes the one at Nestucca Bay. The only other possible sighting in the lower 48 is disputed. In October 2013, a goose that some believe to have been a Tundra Bean-Goose and others assert was a Taiga Bean-Goose was spotted at Sonny Bono Salton Sea National Wildlife Refuge in California.

Sliman first spotted the bird at 8:39 a.m. during one of her morning “Ducky at Dawn” geese hikes and later confirmed that species with the help of expert birders.

The sighting — and the continued presence of — the Bean-Goose has attracted birders by the hundreds. Harris said the refuge typically has three to six groups of visitors each day during the summer peak. The news of the BeanGoose, however, has meant several days when the car count has topped 100.

Since the first announcement, the numbers have tapered off to about 15 to 40 groups per day.

as Illinois, New Jersey, Seattle and San Diego,” Harris said. “There’s been lots of people from Northern California and all over the Pacific Northwest.”

Harris describes the Tundra BeanGoose as a medium-sized goose that looks similar to a Greater White-fronted Goose, but with a few key differences.

“One of the things that stands out for people looking at it is it has bright orange legs and feet and its beak has a big orange band,” she told the Sun. “The tip of the beak is black, then there’s a big orange spot and then the back (of the beak) is black. It kind of looks like candy corn. The orange beak is very distinctive for this bird.”

The Tundra Bean-Goose, which is normally found from western Europe to eastern China, is at home in habitats of marshes and wet grassland says Harris.

The bird has been seen in Alaska, but even that is a rare occurrence.

Noting that many of the birders hadn’t known about the refuge before the sighting, Harris says the sighting could help put the refuge more on people’s radar for future visits.

“It was almost as fun to see the visitors seeing the goose because they were so excited,” she said. “Many of them have never been to the refuge. (Some) hadn’t heard about (the Refuge) and said, ‘This is the first time I’ve been here, and I’m going to come back.’”

Crafting a Natural Ornament USFWS hosts wreath-making event at Nestucca Bay National Wildlife Refuge

W

ith the seasons greetings around the corner, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is hoping to help put you in the holiday spirit. USFWS will host a series of holiday wreath-making workshops at both Nestucca Bay National Wildlife Refuge and at Lincoln City’s Connie Hansen Garden.

Event dates are Dec. 7, noon-2:30 p.m. at Connie Hansen Garden and Dec. 13 and 14, 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m. at Nestucca Bay National Wildlife Refuge. During the holidaythemed events, Refuge volunteer and wreath maker Lee Sliman will teach participants how to combine conifers and shrubs, native to Nestucca Bay National Wildlife Refuge, into a wreath that is yours to keep. Event organizers hail the holiday wreaths as beautiful, easy to make, and a fun and engaging activity for the whole family.

“We always have a great time at the wreath-making workshops, and I was very impressed at the talent of the visitors, says Sliman. “I’m excited to work with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to host the workshops again this year, and, because of their popularity, we’ve added a third workshop to our calendar.”

estucca Valley Presbyterian pastor Ben Dake loves to walk and hike. And he did just that — and more — during a walk from France’s Pyrenees Mountains to the Cathedral of Santiago De Compostela in northwestern Spain that he finished in October.

Dake’s journey was along a pilgrimage route that has been followed for more than 1,000 years and is based on the legend that St. James the Elder’s remains is buried where the cathedral stands.

St. James was one of Jesus’s apostles as recorded in the Bible’s New Testament — hence, the naming of the 490-mile route: El Camino de Santiago, or in English, “The Way of St. James.” Approximately 250,000 people take the walk each year.

“It’s pretty amazing that for all those miles and all these centuries this walk has been marked. Some very famous people have walked The Camino. Millions of people have walked it.”

An avid hiker, backpacker and mountain climber, Dake has long thought about doing “The Camino” — dating back 40 years when he was in seminary in Ireland. At that time, some of his acquaintances walked the route and told him about it. More recently, Dake said he was moved to take the pilgrimage after watching the Martin Sheen movie “The Way,” which tells the story of a father whose son was going to do “The Camino” but died just as he was getting started. The father ultimately takes the plunge and does the pilgrimage, carrying his son’s remains along with him.

“This is a historical pilgrimage route,” says Dake about his trek. “Even though I love to hike and trek, I went for the pilgrimage part. Being a person of faith, I always crave what some people might call spiritual experiences. I just think of them as places where the veil is kind of thin between where we are and what might be beyond where we are now.

I don’t pretend to have the floorboards of that figured out, but I do think that I’ve had a variety of experiences in my life where I’ve been in the presence of some thin places between this reality and another reality.”

He says that for him, the walk offered more than a test of fitness as he traversed the nearly 500 miles — with just a single

“I went to church a lot,” he says. “I don’t get to go to church because I do church. I was in a very worshipful posture a lot of the time. I think that (experience) was right up there (with the best of what the trip had to offer).”

He said many of the churches along the route date back to the 8th and 9th centuries.

“The architecture was just wonderful to spend time in,” he says. “They’re either extremely ornate or they’re very spare.”

And relationships he built over the long journey was another memorable part of the journey.

“One of the highlights was just talking with people from all over the world about why they are (doing ‘The Camino’) and about their experiences of the faith journey,” he says. “You meet the church on the road. We’re all gong someplace, and we’re all in this whole web together.

(I liked) just being able to talk to people from such diverse backgrounds about their faith and what motivates them to go to worship, or pray, study, learn love and sing. It was fabulous.”

Still, Dake says the trip is probably not for everyone.

“We all have our ways of trying to live out our faith, but for where I am and for what I have learned about myself, it was probably the right thing to do at the right time.”

THIS DEPICTS a 1909 post card of the waterfront at Hoquarton Slough, in Tillamook. The sender wrote the following on the back of the post card: “This is the picture of the waterfront of the town we are living in now.

I suppose you will be surprised to hear we have made another move. This is a dandy place to live. We are only seven miles from the ocean beach by wagon road. We came down here on the steamer that is in front. We crossed two bars; the Columbia and the Tillamook. Write soon and tell us all the news, from Dollie”

By SALLY RISSEL for the Sun The Cloverdale Courier newspaper published these articles in its Nov. 26, 1909, Thanksgiving issue. It shows how important river and boat travel was to the trade and transportation of early Tillamook. This was before good roads and routes were established over the Coast Range. All passengers and freight were brought in to Tillamook County by little ships traveling from Astoria and crossing dangerous bars and rough seas. Travel between towns along the Nestucca River was often by boat, also.

The Elmore steamer, Oshkosh a gasoline two masted schooner, in command of Captain Latham arrived on Thursday on her maiden trip to Tillamook. In her company was the Elmore and Argo; all three boats being tied up at the wharf at one time gave our waterfront a lively appearance. The Oskhosh gross tonnage is 145 ton net 123. She is 95 feet long with a 24 feet beam. Hold is 7 feet deep and when fully loaded draws 8 feet aft. She brought in a cargo of 187 tons under her hatches. Captain Thomas Latham, her commander, informs us that she left Astoria at 5:45 a.m. On the 11th and arrived at Garibaldi at 11:20 a.m. He thinks

They made the trip against the current in one hour and eleven minutes. Mr. Perkins is the father of Mrs. Magarrell, and he and wife who are from Atlanta Iowa, have been visiting at the home of their daughter the past two months.

A Swarm of Salmon Rains, high water bring chinook into river system

ots of rain = Lots of fish. And so it is. On Nov. 20 and 22 the Nestucca River went on a tear and very quickly rose out of fishing range, jumping from 4.4 feet to 7.11 feet in about a five-hour span. The river turned to mud and was unfishable all day Saturday. Three Rivers, however, weathered the storm much better and, by the morning of Nov. 22, fishermen were fishing at the hatchery and below — and doing quite well. Fall chinook and winter steelhead were there in good numbers, as often the case after a good rain, and even though the river was high, those fish are trapped there and have no where to go, making them easy targets.
