EDITORIAL/OPINION Publisher’s Column

Dr. Gloria Zuurveen Founder /Owner/ Publisher/Photographer

Hello Everyone, Praise God for another day. He has kept me and you too if you are reading this. He we are once again and since last week we have had a Democratic debate and in the midst of all that was said, I must be fair, I did not watch it all, but from what I heard it appears that Black lives doesn’t even matter. But my question is, “Why should Black lives matter to everyone else when they don’t seem to matter to us? Yes, If we really believe that “Black Lives Matter” then we would take our survival into our own hands and stop waiting on some Moses to deliver us from all the evil that Black lives face on a day to day basis. It is time that we pull together and use all that is within us to ensure that Black lives really matter and then everyone else will respect Black lives. We must form co-ops and pool our resources together and support one another. As we see that there we are not a priority for those in power we must take possession of our own God-given power and use it because we know, if no one else knows that Black lives do matter. Black matter because it was Black lives that built this country, these United States of America, that everyone else is now is trying to claim by way of being an immigrant legal or illegal by choice and not by force. We must know and act on what we know like Nehemiah whose heart was for his people so too our hearts must be for our people, Black people, because Black Lives Matters.

Mayor Garcetti’s Public Town Hall Meeting at a Church Sheds New Light on the Concept of Separating Church and State By General Jeff Skid Row Community Activist This week, Mayor Eric Garcetti convened a town hall meeting in South LA with hopes of addressing AfricanAmerican concerns such as police brutality, lack of jobs and homelessness. The public meeting was held at Holman United Methodist Church on Adams (about a minute south of the 10 freeway) and drew a crowd of several hundred concerned citizens. As soon as the Mayor began to speak, dozens of protesters immediately stood up and turned their backs on Garcetti. Later, chants of Black Lives Matter rang out, bouncing off the sanctuary walls louder than the church’s Sunday choir. Members of the church and other church-going folk in attendance quickly became frustrated with the non-stop disruption by the protesters. Right then and there an epiphany happened. Should the Mayor have held a public town hall meeting at a church to begin with, especially knowing that the recent uptick in protests suggested that the ruckus may also appear there, too? Why subject the rest of the African-American community in attendance to the aggressive behavior of dissenters for which it could easily be predicted that they would be there?.....Some said afterward that the Mayor anticipated the dissent showing up and festering to a point where the meeting would be cancelled abruptly because he truly had nothing new to say. Either way, the question is now raised- Was it appropriate for a political meeting to be held in a church?...And more importantly, is a public meeting held in a church bound by the rules and regulations the same as regular church services?....What about people who are not religious at all? On another note, the pastor of Holman, Pastor Kevin Sauls, was so visibly upset that he stormed out after stating sternly “Respect my house!” This brought yet another entirely different outlook to the question of church and state. Does Sauls have the credibility to lead a Black church (which is a favorite of the Mayor) even though he is not a Black American and is actually from South Africa? There are those in the Black community who STILL have animosity towards the African nations who sold their ancestors into slavery.

Earlier this year, Pastor Sauls rushed to Skid Row’s aid and opened his church doors when on March 1st LAPD shot and killed an unarmed homeless man in Skid Row named Charly Keunang, better known as “Africa” because he was from Cameroon. Was Sauls’ eagerness to help solely motivated by Keunang also not being Black? Further, was there a disconnect between Pastor Sauls and Black Lives Matter because Sauls doesn’t truly identify with being Black? Melina Abdullah, a BLM organizer, was overheard telling Pastor Sauls “Don’t touch me, don’t touch me” as Sauls attempted to prevent her from speaking aggressively towards both Mayor Garcetti and new LAPD Police Commission President Matthew Johnson (who is also Black) using one of the church’s microphones. Several large men rushed to the aid of Abdullah which further annoyed Sauls who soon afterward shut down the entire meeting because he had lost total control. It should also be noted that Mayor Garcetti, who when addressing the majority Black audience earlier stated “I agree….Black lives do matter”, doesn’t even have an AfricanAmerican male on his South LA staff, yet continues to court the Black vote as rumors spread about his higher political aspirations (think: Sacramento)….What should also be noted is that the Mayor instead has several African men on his South LA staff- (Maybe THAT’S the reason for the strong on-going connections to Holman United Methodist Church) To add, Pastor Sauls is also a LAHSA Commissioner (Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority) which funds non-profits and has only been the lead pastor at Holman since 2012. It should be noted that Sauls’ resume includes numerous connections and appointments to African religious groups. The question can then be raised- Can a non-African-American pastor qualify to lead a Black church in South LA?...Especially when he goes against Black activists who are demanding to be heard as they declare that Black Lives Matter? Is it time for Holman to get a real Black preacher instead of an import?...Should the Mayor hire a Black man (or two) since he says Black Lives Matter?...Especially when we all know that BLM started because of all the ongoing killings of unarmed Black men across the country? Maybe next time, Mayor Garcetti can hold his town hall meeting at the local rec center so protesters can disrespect the state without the possibility of disrespecting the church at the same time.

Political Exclusion By James Clingman The Democrat debate was nothing short of embarrassing, insulting, and dismissive of Black people. While the men did not wear the traditional red and blue ties, thank God, the two and a half hour rhetorical exercise was an in-your-face thumbing of the nose at Black voters. How much more proof do we need to make us understand that we are totally excluded from the political process? Are we ignored and dismissed because we don’t vote in primaries, or do we not vote in primaries because we are ignored? The Republican debate was an inside game of name-calling, accusations, and innuendo with no mention of Black folks. The Dems stage show deferred to Black people only once, and that was in an obligatory and patronizing way. Why are we so accepting of such displays of indifference and condescension from politicians? Other groups were mentioned and supported in their causes, but Black folks were reduced to one issue—a negative one at that—and given such short shrift that if you turned away for a second or two you would have missed it. The Black-guy-in-residence at CNN, Don Lemon, was in charge of Facebook questions, only two of the hundreds posed were even included in the debate, and his first choice was the ridiculous question: “Do Black lives matter ‘or’ do all lives matter?” I guess that was Lemon’s way of getting our issue on the table, huh? Aside from the question lacking any substance or even making any sense, the candidates did not even answer it. Our inclusion in the Democrat debate was reduced to a one minute discussion on whether our lives matter. What were they supposed to say, “No, they don’t matter?” And because the question was framed as a choice between Black lives and all lives, it devalued Black people even more. Do candidates really need to answer that question, Mr. Lemon? Will the question of whether our lives matter or not be reflective of the role Black folks will play in the upcoming election? If so, the candidates on both sides will love that. It is so frustrating to see Black people continue to be treated like a bunch of children who only get a pat on their heads, a pacifier in their mouths, and then be relegated to the back of the room by

disingenuous politicians. Black commentators on “Views Shows” hardly ever discuss Black-specific issues, unless they are crimerelated. Candidates have debates and never mention Black people, except to cite a few statistics on poverty and crime, the only things it seems we are noted for in their minds. They never offer their support of our specific issues, the way they do when it comes to women, Jewish, and LGBT issues. We get what we accept though, right? The impact of millions of union members and their lobbyists, along with other groups like the NRA, causes candidates to genuflect and kowtow to their desires. Of course their campaign contributions are a great incentive. Black folks have opted for 501(c)3 organizations that cannot give money or endorse candidates the way unions can. Our largest organization, the NAACP, cannot lobby or endorse particular candidates. Although we know the NAACP is an adjunct surreptitious component of the Democrat party and gets significant funding from unions, which are also overwhelmingly Democrat, that organization has little or no influence in the Democrat party. Isn’t that obvious? Just look at the lack of deference given by the Dems toward Black people? CNN’s Wolf Blitzer asked NAACP President, Cornell Brooks, about the Democrat debate. Brooks’ assessment of the debate, vis-à-vis Black issues, was similar to mine; but when asked what he would have liked the candidates to discuss he said, “Voting Rights.” I rest my case. During the debate, unions and the NRA were mentioned, but the NAACP was not. Candidates seek the endorsements from associations because of the number of members they have and the contributions they make. What would make us think that our millions of votes alone, especially since we give virtually all of them to the Dems, will bring about any acknowledgement or reciprocity, much less any power in the public policy inner circle? Where are our lobbyists and our Super Pac? Although we now vote as a bloc in favor of the Dems, our voting bloc must be independent, leveraged, and never taken for granted. As I said before, Black voters give all of our quid but get no quo in return. We have allowed our political interests to be reduced to a protracted fight for voting rights and one silly question: “Do Black lives matter?” Politicians merely need to say “I support your right to vote” and “Yes, Black lives do matter,” and they are off the hook for any other deliverable. We give so much but settle for so little.

Truck Maintenance is a Growing Career Opportunity (BPT) - One career field that requires great hands-on training, provides on-the-job instruction and is growing steadily is that of a diesel truck mechanic. It's a specialty job, and it's a career that a person can easily advance with for many years. With the transportation industry seeing increased business opportunities, more trucks are needed to deliver products from manufacturers to warehouses and from warehouses to stores across the country. These trucks will need ongoing maintenance to ensure they stay up and running. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that diesel truck mechanics can earn a competitive wage, and that the industry will have an additional 21,600 job openings. Truck mechanics can service trucks for everything from a regular oil change to a complete overhaul of the engine. They need to know how to

use diagnostic equipment and be familiar with both the mechanical and technical aspects of maintaining a diesel engine. "Our diesel employers tell us they can't find enough skilled technicians to meet their current needs, much less expand their operations," says Jerry Rutter, vice president of employment and solutions at Universal Technical Institute. "Training to be a diesel technician is a smart career choice. Employers are competing with impressive compensation and recruitment packages to hire diesel technicians with the skills they need." Penske Truck Leasing is currently growing its maintenance team, and applicants are needed to fill roles as fleet maintenance supervisors, technicians, service coordinators and fuelers/washers. The company has over 221,000 vehicles in its North American fleet. According to Jennifer Sockel, Penske Truck Leasing sen-

ior vice president of human resources, "Penske is experiencing strong growth in 2015 and we are actively hiring diesel engine technicians and maintenance managers across North America." To apply, visit gopenske.com/careers. Penske is a National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certified provider and offers at least 40 hours of state-of-the-art training each year on a variety of equipment, so you can further your career while on the job. For a career that is going to continue to grow and remain very secure, consider pursuing a job as a diesel truck mechanic. At Penske, you'll have the opportunity to learn about every kind of diesel truck on the road, enhance your technical knowledge and choose where in the country you want to work. If you're in high school or considering a career change, look into what a career in diesel truck maintenance could do for you.

My Meeting With Mayor Riordan By Israel Matthews Contributing Writer Hello. This week I had the grand opportunity to meet the former Mayor of Los Angeles Richard Riordan. I was on assignment with my grandmother, Dr. Gloria Zuurveen. At first, I didn’t want to go. But when I arrived at the Luna Park restaurant on La Brea and met all the nice people

along

with

Mayor Riordan I was glad that I came. Mayor Riordan asked me what college I wanted to go to and I said, “I am interested in going to Harvard.” He shook his head and

smiled. It was

also a fun time for me because we had pizza with delicious ice tea. I took lots of pictures and here is one for you to see with me and Mayor Riordan. See you next week. God Bless.:)

CHURCH & COMMUNITY NEWS

Pastors Grow More Polarized On Islam By Lisa Cannon Green NASHVILLE, Tenn. ¬– Protestant pastors are increasingly polarized about Islam, with a growing share labeling the Muslim faith violent while a sharply rising minority calls it spiritually good. Although a majority considers Islam dangerous, a small but increasing segment believes Islam is similar to Christianity, according to a new survey by Nashville-based LifeWay Research. And two-thirds of Protestant pastors agree Christianity and Islam should seek to coexist in America. The softening of some pastors’ views toward Islam is a key finding of a LifeWay Research survey of 1,000 Protestant pastors. Seventeen percent of pastors char-

acterize Islam as similar to Christianity, nearly double the 9 percent from five years earlier. Although views shifted in both directions, positive opinions rose more significantly. The American public, meanwhile, is twice as likely as pastors to see common ground between Islam and Christianity. In a parallel survey of 1,000 Americans, more than a third say the two faiths are similar. “To understand the data, you have to understand that Protestant pastors are not of one mind,” said Ed Stetzer, executive director of LifeWay Research, “And minds are changing in more than one direction.” Shifting views While more than 8 in 10 Protestant pastors say Islam is fundamentally different from Christianity, just as they did in 2010, minority viewpoints are increasing, LifeWay Research finds. Compared to five years ago, pastors are much more likely to describe Islam in favorable terms. Fifty percent say Islam promotes charity, up from 33 percent.

Significant numbers also describe Islam as spiritually good (32 percent, up from 19 percent), tolerant (24 percent, up from 16 percent), and open (22 percent, up from 12 percent.) Negative opinions are also on the rise, although the shift is less dramatic. A slim majority considers Islam dangerous (52 percent, up from 44 percent). Almost half say Islam promotes violence (49 percent, up from 42 percent) and is spiritually evil (46 percent, up from 39 percent). Stetzer explained, “Some mainline pastors and a few evangelicals are answering questions in a more positive way, while some evangelicals and a few mainline Protestants are trending in a negative way. But

the biggest move is in the smallest percent—and is in a more positive direction.” The surveys allowed pastors to choose positive and negative terms to describe Islam, and pastors chose more of both this year than they did in LifeWay Research’s survey five years ago. Fewer pastors opted for “none of these.” In the most pointed increase, 53 percent of pastors say Islam is “relevant today,” an opinion held by only 28 percent five years earlier. “It only makes sense that Islam is relevant today—it’s on the evening news regularly. What’s perhaps most interesting is that the majority of that coverage is negative, but some pastors still evidence a more positive perception,” said Stetzer. “Furthermore, it is worth noting that while pastors appear to be increasingly familiar with Islam,” said Stetzer, “the same large majority recognizes unmistakable differences between Islam and Christianity.” Moving apart

Evangelical and mainline pastors hold divergent opinions about Islam. Most self-identified evangelical ministers view it as a violent and dangerous faith, while most self-identified mainline pastors associate it with peace, love, and compassion. The gap has widened in the past five years. Fifty-two percent of evangelical pastors today characterize Islam as spiritually evil (up from 44 percent), while only 32 percent of mainline pastors agree, a rate unchanged from five years ago. Conversely, almost half of mainline pastors call Islam spiritually good (47 percent, up from 35 percent). Fewer than 1 in 4 evangelical pastors share that opinion (24 percent, up from 16 percent). Evangelical pastors increasingly say Islam is dangerous (59 percent, up from 50 percent) and promotes violence (54 percent, up from 49 percent), while mainline pastors’ views on those terms are little changed. In contrast, growing numbers of mainline pas-

tors say Islam is tolerant (35 percent, up from 25 percent) and open (30 percent, up from 18 percent), while evangelical pastors’ agreement with those terms rises only slightly. Asked which of two wellknown descriptions is closer to their beliefs, 59 percent of evangelical pastors choose evangelist Franklin Graham’s characterization of Islam as “a very evil and a very wicked religion,” while 51 percent of mainline pastors choose former President George W. Bush’s comment, “the Muslim faith is based upon peace and love and compassion.” “While these quotes are hardly new, they still embody opposite perspectives held by different theological groups of Christian leaders,” said Stetzer. Americans’ views Though pastors don’t see eye to eye on Islam, an even larger chasm divides them from the American public. While 83 percent of Protestant pastors believe Islam is fundamentally different from

Christianity, only 44 percent of Americans agree. Almost as many Americans (34 percent) consider the two faiths similar. Overall, Americans tend to be more sympathetic than pastors toward Islam. They are less likely than both mainline and evangelical pastors to view Islam as dangerous, violent, or spiritually evil. But for most Americans, Islam isn’t a black-and-white issue, LifeWay Research finds. Their uncertainty is evident throughout the survey. While 31 percent of Americans say Islam is tolerant, almost as many (26 percent) say it promotes violence. Equal numbers find Islam to be dangerous and open (29 percent each). Not a single characteristic—positive or negative—gains agreement from a majority, and 13 percent of Americans remain entirely undecided, choosing “none of these.” Americans are also unsure whether Christians and Muslims pray to the same God—46 percent say yes, while 47 percent say no.

HEALTH & COMMUNITY NEWS Sue and Bill Gross Nursing Endowment To Charles R. Drew University Rises to $2 Million LOS ANGELES, CA – Bill Gross, and his wife, Sue, the Gross Family Foundation president, have committed an additional $500,000 to Charles R. Drew University’s Mervyn M. Dymally School of Nursing. The contribution increases The Sue and Bill Gross Nursing Endowment to $2 Million. Last year, their initial $1.5 million gift was the largest individual contribution awarded to University’s Nursing School since its opening in August 2010. “The Mervyn M. Dymally School of Nursing produces graduates that are compassionate and dedicated to providing health care where it is needed most in Los Angeles,” said Sue Gross. “After the incredible commitment and stories of selflessness from applicants in the first year, we decided to

increase our donation. We hope the Endowment continues to make a difference in the lives of these students and to inspire a new generation of leaders in nursing.” Recipients of this Endowment, known as Sue and Bill Gross Nursing Scholars, demonstrate financial need and live in Service Planning Area 6 (Athens, Compton, Crenshaw, Florence, Hyde Park, Lynwood, Paramount and Watts). The first Scholars were awarded in Summer 2015, and included three students pursuing a Master of Science in Nursing: • Scholar Menjivar— A son of immigrants from El Salvador, a first-generation college graduate, and a proud father of two, Menjivar plans to work in an underserved community of Los Angeles

Role Model By Dean L. Jones, CPM It is refreshing to hear famous people speaking their real mind in lieu of trying to be politically correct. Recently, Tom Brady, four-time Super Bowl Champion Quarterback returned some heat to Boston Magazine who called his business partner a “glorified snake-oil salesman.” Tom Brady said, “I disagree with a lot of things that people tell you to do. You’ll probably go out and drink Coca-Cola and think, ‘Oh yeah, that’s no problem.’ Why? Because they pay lots of money for advertisements to think that you should drink Coca-Cola for a living? No, I totally disagree with that. And when people do that, I think that’s quackery. And the fact that they can sell that to kids? I mean, that’s poison for kids. But they keep doing it." I found this really cool because outing the world's largest liquid sugar seller is something that most famous folks would never do, even if they know the truth. Tom Brady did not stop at Coca Cola, where he also went on to say, “I think we’ve been lied to by a lot of food companies over the years, by a lot of beverage companies over the years. But we still do it. That’s just America, and that’s what we’ve been conditioned to. We believe that Frosted Flakes is a food. You just keep eating those things and you keep wondering why we have just incredible rates of disease in our country. 5 Ways To Boost Your Health in Five Minutes or Less (BPT) - You know those days when your normal schedule gets thrown completely out the window? You're tired, overrun and can barely think about the next thing on your to-do list, let alone work on your larger goals or concentrate on your health. "Luckily, major results can stem from small steps, even if they seem inconsequential. These tiny decisions throughout your day add up to create a gradual shift towards change and transformation when it comes to your health," says Paul Kriegler, registered dietitian with Life Time - The Healthy Way of Life Company. When you're flying at rapid speed throughout your day and could use a small win, Kriegler suggests trying a few of these five-minute health commitments: Whip up a sustainable energy boost. Think of food as fuel for your body. When you're busy and on the run, don't forget to pack healthy lunches and snacks to keep you nourished throughout the day. * A protein and powdered greens shake is the perfect quick snack or lunch. * Cut up veggies at the

beginning of the week to pack for lunch. * Make a 3-ingredient salad. All you need is lettuce, a protein, and another veggie. * Throw together stew or chili ingredients for a week of healthy dinners and lunches. Do you have five minutes? Fit in a workout. Kriegler says a workout doesn't have to (and shouldn't!) disrupt your entire day. If you find yourself with five minutes to spare, get up and move. * Work out your kinks with five minutes of stretching or foam rolling. * See how many pushups you can do in five minutes. * When you're at work, run up and down the side stairs of your office. * Fit in two sprints up and down your street before dinner. * Do three to six yoga poses to target a particular body part or objective. Find a yoga video that focuses on relaxation or strength. *Head out to your backyard for five minutes of jumping rope, playing tag with the kids or trying a YouTube exercise video that looks inter-

esting. Plan for the days and weeks ahead. Achieving a goal always involves planning. Find five minutes in your day to make sure you have a healthy plan in place. * Plan a healthy menu for dinner tonight or start your healthy shopping list for the week. * Pack your gym bag for tomorrow's workout. Take time for yourself. "When you're constantly on the go, remembering to take time for yourself can be a challenge," says Kriegler. "Whether you have to get up five minutes early or stay up five minutes late, fit in some time to connect with yourself." * Try a five minute meditation to relax your body. * Walk outside for a few minutes of sun and fresh air. * Pour yourself a big glass of water to take your supplements with in the morning. *Call someone in your support network for encouragement. This could be a weight loss coach, running or workout buddy, friend or spouse. Although these may seem like minor tips, these small wins can help you on your journey toward a healthier way of life.

NEWS U.S. Attorney Eileen Decker Joins Compton Mayor Aja Brown to Announce New Violence Reduction Network COMPTON – Thursday, U.S. Attorney Eileen Decker joined Compton Mayor Aja Brown and federal and local law enforcement leaders and local elected officials to formally announce the selection of Compton in the Justice Department’s Violence Reduction Network (VRN). Participants included William Lansdowne, Strategic Site Liaison for the Compton Violence Reduction Network Program for the Department of Justice, Los Angeles County Sheriff Jim McDonnell, LASD Compton Station Captain Myron Johnson, Ron M. Geltz, Head Deputy District Attorney Compton Branch Office of the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, Mayor Pro Tem Janna Zurita, Councilmember Emma Sharif, City Attorney Craig Cornwell and Compton Unified School District Board of Trustees VicePresident Satra Zurita. United States Attorney Decker commented: “For decades, Compton has been deeply affected by violence linked to gangs and other criminal activity. The residents of Compton deserve safe neighborhoods and parks where their children can play. We are committed to helping city officials and Sheriff McDonnell make meaningful and long-lasting improvements to the daily lives of Compton residents.” "The City of Compton is extremely pleased to partner with the DOJ and the entire VRN team to enhance public safety in a dynamic and strategic way,” said Mayor Brown. “The VRN is definitely a game changer for public safety in Compton that will positively impact the quality of life for our entire community." Compton becomes part of the second group of cities to become part of VRN, which was launched last year to create opportunities for cities to directly engage with the United States Department of Justice in developing strategies to combat chronic, violent crime. The two-year program will enable Sheriff’s Department officials at the Compton Station to work closely with the Department of Justice and city officials to address 12 key areas, including gang violence and prevention, human trafficking, mental illness and homelessness, at-risk youth and trust-building in the community. Compton was one of five cities selected by the Justice Depart-

ment as partners in the fight against chronic violence (see: http:// go.usa.gov/3zbtR). William Lansdowne, Strategic Site Liaison for the Compton Violence Reduction Network Program for the Department of Justice added: “Compton was selected to be a part of the Violence Reduction Network because it was felt after extensive research that the City and its administration were ready to embrace new ideas and innovation to create a sustainable and safer city while working in partnership with the Justice Department. Mayor Brown is seen by the VRN Program as a champion for change. Her positive can-do attitude and her pride in the City of Compton was a key component in the selection.” “The selection of Compton as a VRN city will allow us to build upon the foundation, relationship, and goals that we’ve already established with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department,” said Mayor Pro Tem Janna Zurita. “I’m proud that Compton has been recognized for its commitment to reducing crime and trying new approaches and I’m looking forward to working with our new federal partners in this effort.” As part of the Violence

Reduction Network, an Assistant United States Attorney has been designated to work out of the Sheriff’s Department’s Compton Station to coordinate resources. The United States Attorney’s Office also will work closely with the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office to coordinate criminal prosecutions in federal and state courts. Los Angeles County Sheriff Jim McDonnell added: “Working together the Sheriff’s Department, the District Attorney’s Office, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office will bring our collective talent and best thinking in the nation to this community as we work to reduce violence and to innovate intervention, enforcement and community trust building strate-

gies.” Four Justice Department agencies have committed significant resources and will work closely with the Sheriff’s Department. Those agencies are the Federal Bureau of Investigation; the United States Marshals Service; the Drug Enforcement Administration; and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. “The VRN is a warning to anyone in Compton causing problems,” remarked CUSD Vice-President Satra Zurita. “The DOJ, FBI, DEA, ATF, DA and every other law enforcement agency with initials is in town now. Compton will be a model city in the next two years thanks to the resources and partnerships provided by the Justice Department’s VRN Pro-

The Violence Reduction Network will provide the Sheriff’s Department with technical assistance and access to resources as part of a robust violent crime strategy that will be supported by federal law enforcement agencies. The Justice Department program seeks to maximize resources to ensure that cities dealing with chronic violence have a strategic way to access resources such as training and exposure to evidence-based best practices across the country. Compton was selected to be part of VRN, in part, because of LASD Sheriff McDonnell’s recognition of the value and benefits presented by this unique opportunity, as well as the deep commitment of LASD and local government officials to partnerships and civic engagement aimed at crime reduction. For the next two years, the Sheriff’s Department and the City of Compton will benefit in a number of ways. The core components of the Violence Reduction Network include expedited access to subject matter experts who can provide training and insight into the critical issues – such as use of force, community trust-building and information sharing with peer-to-peer exchanges – that can provide a more thorough understanding of what drives violent crime and what solutions have worked in other cities. In addition to access to training and evidence-based solutions to community-building and crime reduction, the Violence Reduction Network also enables Compton Station’s gang enforcement, narcotics detectives and cyber -crimes teams to strategically partner with Justice Department components on intelligence gathering, sharing, warrants service and major operations.

BUSINESS & COMMUNITY NEWS Congresswoman Waters Applauds Passage of Carson-Waters Amendment to Ensure Transportation Equity for Urban Communities WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Maxine Waters (CA-43), Ranking Member of the Financial Services Committee, applauded the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee’s passage of the CarsonWaters amendment, which ensures equity for economically distressed urban communities in the distribution of Federal highway funds. The amendment was offered at Congresswoman Waters’ request by Congressman

André Carson (IN-07) during the committee’s consideration of the surface transportation reauthorization bill. The amendment was passed by voice vote, and the bill was subsequently reported out of the committee, also by voice vote. “I applaud the committee’s passage of the CarsonWaters amendment because it will ensure that the most economically distressed communities in our urban areas receive their fair share of Federal high-

These cards are more affordable than you may think and they're a great way to say thank for the all the business you've done together. Say thank you with these hot gift ideas. * A case for their devices. Just about everyone has a tablet these days. That means they'll appreciate a stylish case in luxurious leather to store it in. Whether your employees use their tablets at home or at work, your gift is sure to be with them constantly. Customizable tablet sleeves can also be a great way for employees to carry your company's logo wherever they go. * Make the office fun. All work and no play makes for a dull office, so inject some life into your workplace with a company-wide gift of games. Classic board games and playing cards are sure to appeal to your group. Once you bring them in, make sure you set aside some time to play the games in a team-building environment. Additional gift ideas Have others on your list that don't quite fall into one of the two groups listed above? Not to worry, here are some other gift selections for you to consider: * Gifts for interns and employees younger than 20. Wonder what to get the young employees on your list? Think tech. Replace their existing chargers with portable power banks or consider the Comet Bluetooth(R) Speaker/Selfie Shutter. These gadgets may be small but they pack a lot of punch in a little package. * Gifts for administrators. Where would you be without your administrator or administrative assistant? It's a chilling thought. Say thank you with a gift they'll use and enjoy all year, like a savory new coffee cup, a tote bag or an exciting speaker. Start your shopping today The gift you give at the end of the year is a great way to say thank you for everything these important people

way funds,” said Congresswoman Waters. “I’m proud to work with my colleague, Ms. Waters, on this important amendment that will help ensure that economically distressed urban communities are not left behind,” said Congressman Carson. “It’s just a matter of fairness to make this small but significant change.” The Carson-Waters amendment is based on the Integrated Transportation and Economic Development Act (H.R. 3740), which Congresswoman Waters introduced on October 9, 2015, with the support of Congressman Carson and nine other original cosponsors. The Carson-Waters

amendment amends the national goals of the Federal highway program to include the improvement of road conditions in economically distressed urban communities and the expansion of access to jobs, markets, and economic opportunities for people who live in these communities. The highway program’s goals had already included access to markets for rural communities. “Transportation infrastructure is important in economically distressed urban communities because it provides access to jobs, economic opportunities, and essential goods and services such as banks, health care facilities, grocery stores, restaurants, shop-

ping malls, and colleges and universities,” said Congresswoman Waters. “The Carson-Waters amendment will help to ensure that these communities will have safe, reliable roads and bridges to access these critical opportunities and services.” The Carson-Waters amendment also requires the Secretary of Transportation to establish performance measures for states to use to assess the conditions, accessibility and reliability of roads in economically distressed urban communities and requires states to submit periodic reports that describe progress in the improvement of these communities’ roads.

Looking to Buy a Home? 5 Mortgage Steps You Need To Know (BPT) - The home loan process can seem intimidating, especially for a first-time homebuyer. It is not a simple process, but it doesn't have to be too complicated. There are many resources available to help you prepare for your home buying journey, and your mortgage lender can answer the questions you have throughout the process. "We're finding that many of our customers come into the home loan process with limited knowledge of how the home loan process works," says Eric Hamilton, President of Vanderbilt Mortgage and Finance. "It's important to take the time to familiarize yourself with the process so you know what to expect." Here are some of the key steps to the home loan process, as well as some tips to help you understand what you can expect: 1. Preparation and selfassessment Before you dive headfirst into buying a home, make sure that you know how much you can afford. The first step is to calculate your "debt-toincome ratio." You can do this by adding up your current monthly bills then subtracting your total current income. This will help you determine whether you can afford a mortgage payment, and if so, what amount might fit into your budget. Using an online mortgage calculator is a good way to help you determine what the estimated cost of your monthly mortgage payment will be. Doing these calculations first will help you assess your resources and determine your budget to purchase a home. 2. The loan application Download a blank loan application ahead of time so you can look it over and familiarize yourself with it. This will give you an idea of the information you need when completing and submitting the application. The necessary documents may include: proof of income, proof of employment for the past two years, proof of

identity, proof of residency and your social security card. 3. Origination and Underwriting Origination - The loan officer will review your financing options, work with you to complete the credit application and create the loan account. Underwriting - An underwriter will review the application and determine the level of credit risk you represent based on your credit score, income, existing debt and down payment. You may be asked to provide additional information about your finances during this step. 4. Satisfying loan conditions and full loan approval In this step, you will receive a "conditions to approval" list from your lender, which outlines the tasks you must complete before the loan can be closed. For example, the lender may ask for additional documentation to verify income, savings or emergency funds or other proof that you can afford to repay the loan. At this point in the process the lender may offer a conditional loan approval and start the document verification process. If you accept the conditional loan approval offer, once all conditions have been met, the

lender will issue a full loan approval. 5. Processing Once you've selected your dream home, you'll sign a purchase agreement with the seller. The purchase agreement tells the lender how much you have agreed to pay to purchase the home. The lender may then have the home appraised and will provide you with a copy of the appraisal. 6. Closing In the final step of the process, the lender works with a title company to obtain and review a title report and then finalize your title on the home. The titling company receives a closing package, which contains the documents that need to be signed, recorded and become part of your mortgage loan file. At the closing, you will sign all closing documents and pay any closing costs. The lender then receives all of this signed paperwork to complete the process. Once this process is complete, you're ready to move into your dream home. The home loan process may take some time, but these steps are well worth the wait. NATIONAL/STATE & REGIONAL NEWS Delaware Governor to Pardon Man who Helped Slaves Escape in 19th Century By Jessica Gresko (AP)—Not even the threat of being sold into slavery could stop Samuel Burris, a conductor on the Underground Railroad, from helping slaves to freedom in the 19th century. A free Black man, Burris was caught helping a slave try to escape from Delaware in 1847. After Burris was tried and found

guilty of enticing slaves to escape, part of his sentence was that he be sold into slavery for seven years. Instead, a Pennsylvania anti-slavery society raised the money to purchase him and set him free. And Burris went right back to helping slaves escape. Now, Delaware Gov. Jack Markell has decided to posthu-

Latest Ebony Magazine Cover Shatters “The Cosby Show” — Some Agree, Some Don’t Ebony Magazine, one of the oldest and most respected African American publications, has shattered America’s favorite Black family. The November 2015 issue features a 20-year old picture of the Huxtables from the infamous “Cosby Show”, but in the picture, Bill Cosby’s smiling face is obscured by broken glass. Inside, readers will also find an intense, no holds barred article entitled, “Cliff-Hanger: Can ‘The Cosby Show’ Survive? Should It?”. The cover, although controversial, does reflect in reality what has happened to Cosby’s clean image after more than 50 women have recently accused him of drugging and raping them over the past four decades. Kierna Mayo, editor-in-chief, commented, “I believe with everything that our collective healing (from this and all traumas) is tied to baring truths, confronting selves, and dismantling crutches. We aim to uplift. However, sometimes before you rise up, you break down.” She told CNN, “Neither Cosby nor his effect on black America, good or bad, can be ignored.” She continued, “Ebony is not shattering anything. mously pardon Burris for that long ago conviction, according to two people who have sought that step. Ocea Thomas of Atlanta said in a telephone interview Tuesday that she received a phone call this weekend letting her know Markell would pardon Burris, who died in the 1860s and is one of Thomas’ ancestors. Phone and email messages left Tuesday for Markell’s spokeswoman, Kelly Bachman, were not immediately returned. Thomas says she became emotional after learning that Burris, the

brother of her great-great grandmother, would be pardoned. “I stood there and cried. It was pride. It was relief. I guess justification. All of that,” Thomas said. Robin Krawitz, a historian at Delaware State University who is writing a book about Burris, said historians don’t know exactly how many slaves Burris helped escape but they do know he continued his work even after his conviction, at great personal risk. Slaveholders and sympathizers eventually complained to the state legislature, saying Burris hadn’t stopped enticing slaves to leave their masters. Burris left the state when lawmakers responded with a law that could have brought a lashing so severe it would have been tantamount to a death sentence. Thomas, Burris’ relative, says she was told the pardon will take place on Nov. 2, the anniversary of Burris’ conviction. The state had already been planning to unveil a historical marker honoring Burris that day. The marker will be placed in Delaware’s Kent County, near where Burris grew up. Robert Seeley, of Havertown, Pennsylvania, who had asked the governor earlier this year to pardon Burris and two other men, confirmed that he’d also been contacted about the pardon. “It’s a victory. It brings honor to the Burris family and it brings justice for Samuel Burris and his descendants. It’s making

a wrong a right finally,” Seeley said. Seeley had asked the governor to pardon Burris as well as two others who had worked to get slaves to freedom: John Hunn and Thomas Garrett, one of Seeley’s relatives who is credited with helping more than 2,000 slaves escape. Seeley says he got the idea after outgoing Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn granted clemency to three abolitionists convicted for hiding and helping escaped slaves. Seeley says he’s been working with Markell’s office but that the governor can’t issue a pardon in Hunn and Garrett’s cases because they were tried in federal court, not state court. He says President Barack Obama would need to pardon them and that he plans to continue to work on a pardon in their case. “Even if it comes out to be a proclamation or a declaration or not an official presidential pardon, so be it. We’ll see what we can do,” he said, adding there is “a lot of red tape.”
