Congresswomen Waters and Bass Convenes Meeting with Presidential Candidate Hillary Clinton and Black Leaders By Gloria Zuurveen Editor-in-Chief gloriaz@pacenews.net LOS ANGELES— According to a quote from Black Lives Matter, “Historically, all political parties have participated in the systematic disenfranchisement of Black people. Antiblack racism, especially that sanctioned by the state, has resulted in the loss of healthy and thriving Black life and wellbeing. Given that, we will continue to hold politicians and political parties accountable for their policies and platforms. We will also continue to demand the intentional dismantling of structural racism.” Based on quotes like the one above regarding Black life, Congresswomen Maxine Waters and Karen Bass took unifying action to stand in unity as congressional representatives for their Black constituents and convened a meeting to have Black leaders hear and ask questions in an up close and personal setting where Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton answered some hard-hitting and serious questions regarding: special needs children who fall into foster care and have no resources; the incarceration crisis in America with women being the fastest growing segment according to Susan Burton, Executive Director, a New Way of Life, reentry organization that

Hello Readers , This was a very productive week with all the business at hand. But praise God who gives me the victory. He causes me to triumph over all of my troubles. He makes it possible for me to move on when I don’t even feel like it. So I am grateful that He keeps me when I can’t keep myself. I am so grateful and I hope you are too for our continuous bringing you the news week after week. Even thought I appealed to the community for support, it just doesn’t come. Why I don’t know. But I do know that when we seek for others to for us what we will not do for ourselves comes out as a direction reflection on our character. It shows other who look and see that Blacks don’t support Blacks so why should we. I have often sought community support and it falls on deaf ears but yet every week this paper comes rolling out off of the presses to supply you weekly news and many of you are using it to your benefit. I am praying that we will get it together soon and start support the business in the community.

Curry George Curry Media Columnist Last Saturday, President Obama attended his eighth and final White House Correspondents Dinner as president. Below are my favorite Obama zingers from the night: I do apologize – I know I was a little late tonight. I was running on C.P.T. – (laughter) – which stands for “jokes that White people should not make.” (Laughter and applause.) My eighth and final appearance at this unique event. (Laughter.) And I am excited. If this material works well, I’m going to use it at Goldman Sachs next year. (Laughter and applause.) Earn me some serious Tubmans. Next year at this time, someone else will be standing here in this very spot, and it’s anyone’s guess who she will be. But the prospect of leaving the White House is a mixed bag. You might have heard that someone jumped the White House fence last week, but I have to give Secret Service credit – they found Michelle, brought her back, she’s safe back at home now. I love Joe Biden, I really do. And I want to thank him for his friendship, for his counsel, for always giving it to me straight, for not shooting anybody in the face. (Laughter.) We’ve got the bright new face of the Democratic Party here tonight — Mr. Bernie Sanders! (Applause.) There he is – Bernie! (Applause.) Bernie, you look like a million bucks. (Laughter.) Or to put it in terms you’ll understand, you look like 37,000 donations of 27 dollars each. And then there’s Ted Cruz. Ted had a tough week. He went to Indiana — Hoosier country — stood on a basketball court, and called the hoop a “basketball ring.” (Laughter and applause.) What else is in his lexicon? Baseball sticks? Football hats? (Laughter.) But sure, I’m the foreign one. (Laughter and applause.) The Republican establishment is incredulous that he is their most likely nominee – incredulous, shocking. They say Donald lacks the foreign policy experience to be president. But, in fairness, he has spent years meeting with leaders from around the world: Miss Sweden, Miss Argentina, Miss Azerbaijan. (Laughter and applause.) Comedian Larry Wilmore gave a mixed performance at the White House Correspondent Dinner and was justifiably criticized for closing his stand-up routine with, “So, Mr. President, if I’m going to keep it 100: Yo, Barry, you did it, my n—ger. You did it.” The n-word is one of the most obnoxious words in the English language and should never be used – period. And it definitely should not be used when addressing the nation’s first Black president in public or in private.
Many of Wilmore’s jokes simply were not funny. But he did manage to land quite a few on target: Well, welcome to “Negro Night” here at the Washington Hilton, or as Fox News will report, “Two thugs disrupt elegant dinner in D.C.” And not to throw any shade, but Fox News is the highestrated cable news channel among viewers who have no idea what “shade” means. I think Fox News secretly likes Beyoncé, though. They just renamed “The Kelly File,” “Becky with the good hair.” MSNBC – MSNBC here tonight? No? Which actually now stands for “Missing a Significant Number of Black Correspondents.” Am I wrong? They like fired Melissa Harris-Perry, they canceled Joy Reid, they booted Touré. I heard they put Chris Hayes on probation because they thought he was related to Isaac Hayes. That’s wrong. You know, I should say some of America’s finest Black journalists are here tonight. Don Lemon’s here, too. But to say a little bit about me, so, I am a Black man who replaced a White man who pretended to be a TV newscaster. So, yeah, in that way Lester Holt and I have a lot in common. President’s hair is so white it keeps saying “all lives matter.” All I’m saying is that in less than eight years, Mr. President, you’ve busted two time-honored stereotypes. Black does crack, and apparently once you go black, it looks like we are going back. Thanks, Ben Carson. Lots of big news this year, the Treasury promised to put Harriet Tubman’s face on the $10 bill, but now we have to wait until 2030 for the $20 bill. Yeah. Man, women haven’t been this deceived by a bill since Cosby [groans]. Donald Trump said that if Hillary Clinton were a man, he didn’t think she’d get 5 percent of the vote. Okay, alright, alright. First of all, if Hillary Clinton were suddenly a man, her biggest problem would be finding a bathroom she’d be allowed to use in North Carolina. And I can’t understand why everyone treats Donald Trump with kid gloves. And then I realized they’re the only gloves that’ll fit his stupid, little baby hands. And this is your last year in office, right, so now your legacy begins. So I wanna talk about what you’re leaving behind, and I don’t mean the Black Jesus in the Lincoln bedroom… No, I’m just saying, make sure you take all of your culturally specific items with you so you can get your security deposit back, Mr. President. Stop Whining—Start Grinding By James Clingman The pessimist complains about the wind; the optimist expects it to change; the realist adjusts the sails. — William Arthur Ward It’s interesting how the young folks have started using a term that describes what the older folks should be doing. I hear young people saying, “I’m grinding,” and I hear older folks whining. Young people know they have to “just do it,” as the saying goes, in order to achieve their dreams. In many cases they are willing to take risks and forego the creature comforts that could accrue to them via high level corporate salaries. They are willing to sacrifice in order to pursue their own path in life, unconstrained by the “rules” someone else sets for them. We older folks are not as willing to do the work appertaining to progress; instead we are still relying on politicians to make things better for us. We do a lot more whining than grinding when it comes to our collective—and sometimes even our individual economic freedom. I hear it on the radio and on news shows all the time from so -called leaders and from so-called liberated Black folks. They whine about what the “Man” is doing to us, how our collective fate is not in our own hands but someone else’s, what “we need to do,” how “unequal” we are in income, wealth, and social opportunities, and how many of us are in prison. They can recite all the stats and all the history surrounding our current demise. They reminisce about Kemet and other ancient African contributions to the world. They talk about “Black Wall Street” and invoke the names of our great icons; and they continue to lament and chronicle, as Maulana Karenga says, “Litanies of lost battles.” While many of us are very adept at talking about our problems, far fewer of us are willing to get into the fray and do the work to ameliorate our problems—even though the solutions to our problems are relatively simple to implement. Co-convener of the One million Conscious Black Voters and Contributors (www.iamoneofthemillion.com), Amefika Geuka,wrote a “Black Paper” in 2007 in which he stated, “[Our] vision is of a transformed Black community where our people radically improve the quality of their lives and surroundings. We will accomplish this by implementing programs and ventures designed specifically for the unique needs of people of African descent – without apology! This
will result in the complete elimination of the ‘slave mentality’ and dependence on the gratuity of others that it promotes. We will cease to be the ‘weakest link in the chain,’ or weakest ‘patch’ in the ‘quiltlike’ fabric of American society and that of the world.” Rhetoric not followed by action is meaningless; and whining not supplanted by grinding only displays weakness and apathy. Booker T. Washington said, “The world might pity a whining nation, but it will never respect it [until it respects itself enough to do for itself].” If we would turn our whining into grinding, not worrying as much about the external factors but concentrating on our internal resources with which to “accomplish what we will,” Black people would be much better off. Politically speaking, Black folks are now so engulfed in Presidential candidates, thinking once again that our salvation somehow lies within them. Some of our Black political hacks are whining about which candidate will do the most for us, which is kinda like two enslaved people arguing over which plantation and “master” are better. If we continue to seek the largess of a political candidate without having a reasonable assurance that he or she will do more than talk about our situation, we will continue to get the same thing we have always gotten from them: more rhetoric. Stop waiting to hear their patronizing words regarding Black issues; start demanding what we want, and then be prepared to respond with our votes and our dollars. We must negotiate from a position of strength not with idle threats and saber-rattling, but by withholding our votes and our dollars if they do not support our demands. What do we have to lose? The State of North Carolina is currently being economically punished because of its stand on which bathrooms transgender persons can use. Corporations are withdrawing their dollars and other threats abound by athletic groups and such. Question: Why isn’t the same thing happening on behalf of Black folks when it comes to voter suppression in that state? Have you heard any corporation threaten to leave or boycott Carolina on behalf of Black people? The POTUS even spoke up for the transgender people. Similar to the Indianapolis, Indiana case and the purported discrimination against gay people by businesses, corporations said they would move and the NCAA said it would cancel its events in that city if the law was not reversed. Guess what. The law was changed. We are too busy counting votes to realize that our dollars count for more. Stop Whining and Start Grinding.

had the grand opportunity to share lifelong experiences with over some 30 youths ranging from ages 12- 18, “handpicked” from the inner city, representing the City of Angels, Los Angeles. Early morning, April 27th, 2016, we all gathered at the Los Angeles airport and appeared quite inquisitive of what the scheduled flight and journey to Washington, D. C. would avail. I was delighted by the mannerism and respectful dispositions of the young people. I felt proud to be in their company. “Youth Development On a Mission’s” founder, Edwin Henderson has been working directly and traveling with the youths nearest ten years, and affording the young minds opportunities not generally presented; particularly in the inner city. He takes a firm and loving approach to the youth, while emphasizing the necessity of higher education and of greater importance, giving back to the community. Along with his wife Alisha Henderson and many other support staff, the program is a complete success! The Los Angeles Police Department is logistically part of the organizations stride. They shared their private time and extended a caring heart to the youths, it was unparalleled; particularly in the climate of policemen portrayed with such negativity. I found it impressive to witness the actions of law enforcement and their day to day activities with the youths. The team were comprised of Sgt. Barlow, Officer Rocha , Officer Frausto, Officer Crowder, and

There were many chaperones, who willingly offer their services with the youths and are very diligent about serving as role models. To name a few, Ms. Moore and Ms. Hooks are very dedicated to the enrichment of the students. Ms. Amador, a local teacher at Animo, a Charter High School in South L.A., continues to lend her support. She arranged for many students to be selected to the program; including twin sisters Arlene &
Arlinda Harris, who have been accepted to UCLA ( Westwood!). One chaperone, Ms. Gloria Collins was quite instrumental in generating fund raisers. She graciously accepted donations from the Law Offices of Gipson, Hoffman & Panicione in Century City, Ca., to aid with the expense of transporting the youths to visit the nation’s capital. She was also responsible for having donated “tablets” to the three winning students( Ferderick Rudolfo, Jazmyn Davis and Peace Ikediuba), who
scored highest on a “POP” quiz, regarding the nation’s capital. Surprisingly, we emphatically attracted flight attendants of Southwest airlines: Jean Mare; Ya Ya, Sarah and Susan, while headed back to L.A. They were taken aback having witnessed how refined and well behaved the youths were in their interactions. Southwest flight attendants participated in the announcement of the three winning students and became so overwhelmed, even brought a few to tears. Southwest Airlines flight attendants represented some BIG promises in the near future too! Off to Washington ,D.C. with a host of young people, dedicated citizens and community leaders. The tour of the nation’s capital en-
tailed Martin Luther King Memorial, “Out of the Mountain of Despair, A Stone of Hope.” The great insight from civil rights leader MLK is engraved in the monuments of stone, depicting justice, democracy , hope and love. The youths were designated to embrace the legend, embracing indeed. We visited the Smithsonian National Museums (Air & Space ; Natural Museum) and was intrigued to find a display of NASA astronaut John Glenn , the very first to orbit earth in 1962. The Capitol Building was filled with historical innovations, and we were graced with a very knowledgeable historian tour guide, Jessica, who was comical at best. Triumphantly, we conquered the hills atop Washington D.C., and entered the long awaited “Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers” (Arlington national Cemetery) , a highly respectable resting ground for the Americans, who most notably served the United States; distinctly WWII. Feeling empowered and equipped, we hustled over to the Lincoln Memorial to only enhance the tour with the captivating view, a sense of moral responsibility and the taste of freedom! In light of the fact our intentions were to introduce the youth to educational opportunities, we gallantly trampled a most endearing entrance to Howard University, a historical black college. It was an engaging and a wonderful educational experience for all on the journey. We had the a rigid schedule, we were with law enforcement after all, and most were in great physical shape. I had to be very encouraging to maintain the stride. The early mornings were uncanny, but we conquered the obstacles and the results were simply worthwhile. We learned every step of the way, and the journey left footprints in the minds of many…
Michael Goes To Sacramento By Israel Matthews, Contributing Writer
Hello, Michael went to Sacramento with his classmates, they took the bus and train to get there. Michael is going to tell you all about it in today’s story. Michael was so excited to go to Sacramento with his classmates. He was prepared two days before the trip. The finally came and his granny drove him to the train station. It took eight hours to get there but it was worth it. They went to the California State Capitol building and watched how a bill was passed. He also watched how the people make laws and vote on which ones should pass or not. It was very interesting for Michael because he learned so much. He enjoyed the experience because he knows it is important for him to learn new things and this was certainly new for him. After visiting the Capitol, it was time for the group to go to the park and to do other fun things like eating pizza at the restaurant that was close by their hotel. HEALTH & COMMUNITY NEWS Mayor Garcetti Launches Blue Ribbon Commission on Employment Equity LOS ANGELES— Mayor Eric Garcetti today launched a Blue Ribbon Commission on Employment Equity, an alliance of private and public sector employers committed to providing opportunities for people who have been historically excluded from upwardly-mobile jobs. The new commission, which held its first gathering today, is comprised of government agencies, non-profit organizations and private sector companies representing a range of industries. Inaugural members include the Los Angeles/Orange Counties Building & Construction Trades Council; Morgan Stanley; Sabio; Luxe; Isidore Electronics Recycling; the Chamber of Commerce of Los Angeles County; L.A. Kitchen; and the National Association of Women Business Owners.
“Everyone deserves the opportunity to be selfsufficient, provide for their families, and pursue the American Dream — no matter who they are, or where life has taken them,” said Mayor Garcetti. “Circumstances should never define who you are. When people are denied an opportunity to make a fresh start, it drives up the personal, social, and economic costs of our criminal justice system. Headache Prevention By Dean L. Jones, CPM Food ingredients are over 50% responsible for causing, starting, and bringing on migraine headaches, reported by the National Institute for Neurological Disorders and Stroke. Science consistently explains just how complex the brain operates, and there is no doubt that for recurring headaches have a large range of potential causes for pain. All the same, overly consuming foodstuff filled with processed sugar can easily lead to incurring headache pain. For those who suffer from headaches, it would be very prudent to at least eliminate eating sugary items in effort to rule out this toxic substance as a potential cause. The medical community describes headache pain resulting from oxygen lost due to constricting arteries around the brain. The cause for constriction develops from sudden changes in levels of blood glucose (sugar), which is how food gets to brain cells along with oxygen. Normally, blood glucose remains constant by insulin created in the pancreas; but when the system fails, arteries cramp up, trying to force more flow. A headache is the brain's signal that it is in trouble. Any food ingested that does not contain fiber, i.e. processed sugar, will rapidly convert in the body into glucose that causes blood sugar imbalance and various health conditions including headaches. Brain cells lacking blood glucose cannot process food and oxygen, because it goes into a condition called hypoglycemia. The National Headache Foundation routinely shares how migraine sufferers often crave carbohydrates before or during a headache, signaling low blood glucose. Hypoglycemia is the "crash" after an overdose, often consisting of a large portion of simple carbohydrates like processed sugar that forces arteries to spasm and withhold oxygen from brain cells, resulting in the painful cramping, commonly labeled as a headache. Although it is not the processed sugar directly that induc-

drops to as low as 3 percent. The Blue Ribbon Commission’s builds on the work of the Mayor’s Office of Reentry. Mayor Garcetti established the office last year to help formerly incarcerated Angelenos find stability, resources, employment, housing and reunification with their families — with the goal of reversing the cycle of long-term unemployment, instability and displacement. Earlier today, Mayor Garcetti also signed the Equitable Workforce and Service Restoration Executive Directive, to remove barriers to employment faced by disconnected workers in transition — including those who have been unsheltered, veterans, at -risk youth, and individuals with criminal records. LOS ANGELES—Mayor Eric Garcetti today signed a landmark Executive Directive to restore core city services and create longawaited job opportunities for L.A.’s most under-served communities, as his administration prepares to hire thousands of new employees. Executive Directive #15 was developed with a Back to Basics approach to strategically restore critical City services. The directive builds upon a historic labor agreement the Mayor signed in partnership with the City Council and the Coalition of Los Angeles City Unions this past March, which included long-term savings of more than $16 million for the City's budget, and a goal of hiring more than 5,000 new civilian employees over the next three years. The directive will also ensure that all Angelenos have equitable access to good paying city jobs. “With 46 percent of our City workers eligible to retire by 2018, L.A. has an unprecedented opportunity to rethink the way we deliver services to meet the 21st century demands of our residents," said Mayor Garcetti. "Today we start that transformation. As the thirdlargest employer in our County, we are prioritizing local hiring — to ensure that every qualified Angeleno has an equal opportunity to apply for full-time city jobs. Everyone deserves a chance at success.” The Mayor is instructing all City departments to analyze the services they deliver and account for their specific personnel, technology, and process improvement needs. The directive also calls for all department heads to submit a strategic plan to deploy those resources as effectively as possible. This process ensures that departments are not merely filling vacan-
cies, but using the hiring process as an opportunity to maximize investments and make services more efficient for Angelenos. "It's critical for the City to take this step so that we can continue to fill potholes, trim trees, resurface streets, and fix sidewalks in the decades to come," said City Councilmember Paul Krekorian, chair of the Budget and Finance and Job Creation committees. "Under Mayor Garcetti's leadership, Los Angeles is preparing its next generation of public servants and extending career opportunities to Angelenos who might otherwise get left behind." "This Executive Directive is a wonderful example of labor working with management,” said Councilmember Paul Koretz. “I have seen the diligence and mutual respect on the part of all parties involved, working together to come up with an optimum city workforce for today through to the future -one that is best capable of serving Angelenos while ensuring opportunity and prosperity for so many of our current and future employees. Mayor Garcetti is also calling on departments to bring jobs where they are needed most. The directive instructs departments to prioritize L.A.’s most underemployed communities — including veterans, the formerly incarcerated and disconnected youth. Last year, to ensure the success of that effort, the City launched the Workforce Restoration Working Group. The Working Group includes the Mayor’s Office, the City Council including the Council President’s Office, and
representatives from Labor and various City agencies.To spearhead this effort, Mayor Garcetti tapped former Los Angeles City Councilmember and State Assemblymember Jackie Goldberg. "Earning a job with the City of Los Angeles can be the door to a new life for many Angelenos who just want the chance to serve and to make a decent living for the families,” said Assemblymember Goldberg. “We just need to make sure that door is open to everyone." The directive will also be supported by a new Local Hire Task Force – a partnership between the City and a broad range of nonprofit stakeholders designed to conduct outreach and connect underemployed Angelenos to City job opportunities. Members of the task force include ACCE, NAN, Power, SCOPE, The Row Church, Food and Water Watch, Watts Gang Task Force, CARECEN, the Jewish Labor Committee, the Community Coalition, CLUE-LA, Inner City Struggle, Churches for Action, Southern Christian Leadership Council, the L.A. Black Worker Center and SEIU. "This historic service and workforce restoration program is a model of what can be accomplished when labor, community, Mayor Garcetti and the City Council all work in partnership to forge visionary and smart solutions that meet Los Angeles’ needs,” said Cheryl Parisi, Chair of the Coalition of City Unions. “The program creates thousands of good jobs and new training and hiring opportunities for the community, at the same time that it restores and strengthens the vital services — from tree trimming to crossing guards to 911 dispatchers and others — that residents deserve.”

Shane Scott, senior pastor of 100-year old, Macedonia Baptist Church in Watts took the microphone and asked Clinton, “What can of commitment can you make today to us that as you rebuild America’s infrastructure that you will use those who have been marginalized by the prison systems to help to rebuild the infrastructure, so jobs for those who have been marginalized and then Black small businesses.” She said, “How are we going to create jobs and employment for people who have been marginalized and left out?” “Here is what I want to do. I have said I want more money going into apprenticeship programs. I want community college to be free. I want community colleges to be, not just welcoming, but I want them aggressively recruiting people coming out of prisons to get the skills that they need to compete for jobs. I want a national infrastructure bank. And I think churches and the faith community have to be partners in this,” she said. By Manny Otiko California Black Media With eyes now looking toward California and Hillary Clinton claiming victory in the latest primary, she is still ahead of Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders. Now as Hillary Clinton moves towards clinching the nomination she is faced with the task of winning over Sanders’ supporters. Public Policy Institute of California, reports : about 43 percent of California’s 17.7 million voters are democrats, approximately 10 percent of that number are African American likely voters, California Democratic Party selection process has 549 delegates up for grabs, with 317 of those delegates being district level delegates, which will be distributed proportionately after the June 7 primary results, 106 at large statewide delegates, 53 party leader and elected official delegates, and 73 unpledged delegates in congress, U.S. senate and the governor. Niam Sadik, a 35-yearold student at Cal State University, Los Angeles, is a Sanders’ supporter who says he will not vote for Clinton, if she is the Democratic nominee. “I would never vote for Hillary,” said Sadik. “I would rather vote for the Green Party.” He is also impressed the Green Party has backed reparations for black people. Sadik says he was offended by the comment Hillary Clinton made about so-called “super predators,” back in the 1990’s. Super predators were supposed to be amoral young black children raised in urban environments who were expected to unleash a wave of violent crime. The theory, predicted by political scientist John DiIulio Jr., has since been disproved. “The super-predator theory was always bulls**t,” says criminal justice researcher Franklin Zimring of the University of California, Berkeley, in an interview with BuzzFeed News. “It was political rhetoric cloaking a movement that wanted to lock more people up.” However, President Bill Clinton's 1994 crime bill sent many blacks to jail for long periods of time. Sadik is surprised that both Clintons continue to have good relations with the black community. “Black people are still under the impression that Bill Clinton was the first black president,” says Sadik. Sadik grew up in Washington, D.C. and has been active in politics for a long time. He has been following Sanders’ career for several years and has been impressed with his policies and dedication to social justice. Sanders protested segregation in the 1960’s and has been a longtime critic of mass incarceration, the War on Drugs, and the militarization of the police. He says he is impressed by the success of the Sanders’ campaign so far and claimed he had started a “political revolution,” which won’t fizzle out like
the buzz around Barack Obama. “This grassroots revolution will not die and fade after the presidential campaign,” says Sadik. Many political watchers have been surprised about the success of Sanders, who describes himself as a Democratic socialist. To many Americans who grew up with the Cold War, socialism is akin to communism. But Sadik said a lot of young voters are too young to remember the Cold War and don’t identify with those labels. Also, with the Internet people can research anything and many young people, saddled with huge college debts and facing unemployment, feel the current system is not working for them. “This is the information age. People are tired and fed up,” says Sadik. ”Young people are figuring it out.” Darren Parker, statewide chair of the California Democratic Party’s African American caucus, acknowledges that Sanders’ campaign had attracted the interest of many younger voters. However, he still thinks Hillary Clinton’s ties to the black community will give her a victory. “Bernie has been busy energizing young adults and getting them involved, but clearly Mrs. Clinton has the advantage here in California because of the long-standing history with the Clintons in California,” says Parker. Earl Ofari Hutchinson, a Los Angeles-based author and political analyst, agreed with Parker’s assessment. He also believes Democratic voters will decide Hillary Clinton is a candidate they can work with. “There’s also the political reality about the shape of a Clinton White House,” said Hutchinson in a Huffington Post blog. “She is a moderate, centrist Democrat who will give a hard nod to the interests of minorities, gays and women. She will continue and expand Obama’s policies expanding government programs and initiatives, hike spending on education, healthcare, and jobs and markedly increase taxes on corporations and the wealthy while enforcing, and even tightening, regulations on the banks and Wall Street.” Parker said the two things that make Sanders stand out are his stance against Wall Street and his campaign for free college education. He says that he is confident that the Democratic Party’s agenda is in tune with issues black people think are important. According to Parker, the party’s agenda includes issues such as equal opportunity, education, incarceration, Black Lives Matter, and police brutality “Our caucus had a huge role in making sure the current issues of the African American community were addressed in the new platform,” Parker said.

Can the GOP Win Over Black Voters? By .Madlen Grgodjaian California Black Media With the California Presidential Primaries approaching in June, supporters and protestors of Republican front-runner Donald Trump gathered over the weekend in Northern California to voice their opinion on Trump's statements, policies, business-acumen and the New York real estate giant himself. The business tycoon kicked -off the three-day Republican Convention on April 29 at the Hyatt Regency in Burlingame, 16 miles south of San Francisco to a crowd of 600 advocates for a $100 a plate luncheon. Supporters cheered and greeted the mogul with enthusiasm and hope. Attorney Chet McGensy from San Francisco was the sole African-American supporter among the attendees. "I believe that the AfricanAmerican community is in a terrible state right now in the country, so we have to be able to look at opportunities in terms of rectifying those issues," McGensy said. "When you look at tons of other issues, health issues, crime issues and everything else, it really stems from creating economical empowerment to influence all those other areas. I believe that Mr. Trump is really focused on those issues and that's why I'm really interested in supporting him." Trump reiterated his plans of making America great again by bringing back the jobs to the U.S., having better trade agreements, and building a 1,000-foot wall along the border of Mexico. The television personality has been leading in the primaries and said he's looking forward to being the party's nominee to become the next president of the United States. "When I can focus on Hillary, as I say, 'Crooked Hillary,' she'll go down easier than any of the people we just beat," Trump said. He said the road to presidency is far more challenging for republicans than democrats and the need for unity to exist among conservatives is critical. Republicans are widely known as the party of President Abraham Lincoln. Historically the party of the Emancipation attracted the majority of black voters and poli-

Johnson ended segregation, captivating more black voters. Concurrently, then senator from Arizona and the Republican Party's nominee for president, Barry Goldwater, believed the Civil Rights Act was unconstitutional. His statements attracted many white voters in the south paving the way for the Southern Strategy used by Presidents Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan. With the majority of black voters today identifying with the Democratic Party, Trump is adamant in attracting the African American votes. In Myrtle Beach South Carolina a day before Dr. Martin Luther King Day, Trump said he would create more opportunities for African Americans in a year than President Obama has in nearly eight years. "We have an AfricanAmerican president and the black youth, the African-American youth, has essentially all never done worse," said Trump. "You look at the unemployment in the ’50s. You look at AfricanAmerican people that are 30 and 35 and 40, in the height of their strength and lives, and they’re doing horribly.” Hundreds of protestors rallied outside of the convention during Trump's speech. Activists with Black Lives Matter, Code Pink, and democratic nominee supporters were
demonstrating with every intent to stop him from entering the hotel. Minutes after Trump left the convention without taking any questions from the media, picketers were able to get past the plethora of police officers guarding the entrance to the hotel and unfurl a banner from inside the hotel, "stop hate." Protestor Odalis De La O Cortez of Hayward said she is appalled by the amount of hatred that's being projected by Trump. "I'm here not so much to hate, but I feel more bad for his supporters because they're planted with all this hatred," the first generation college student said. "Nobody is born hating somebody else. They're taught it." The remainder of the GOP convention remained peaceful during the speeches of the other two Republicans vying for the nation's top political position - Gov. John Kasich of Ohio and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz. The two nominees had a group of supporters who stood by their policies. With Trump as the frontrunner, Cruz voiced California's vital role for the future of the Republican Party. "California is going to decide this republican primary," Cruz said. "I could tell you right now, we're going to spend more money in California than we raise in California. ART&ENTERTAINMENT NEWS Barbara Morrison, Chester Whitmore Performs at International Jazz Day in Leimert Park By Ricky Richardson Los Angeles-Jazz fans knew that the month of April was declared Jazz Appreciation Month. We didn’t need an Act of Congress to encourage us to celebrate our love of America’s #1 Art form-JAZZ!. For the un-initiated, Jazz Appreciation Month, (fondly called JAM) was created at the Smithsonian Museum in 2002 to herald and celebrate the extraordinary heritage and history of jazz for the month of April. The intent was to stimulate and encourage people of all ages to participate in jazz, study the music, attend concerts/festivals, listen to jazz on the radio and recordings, read books and magazines about jazz, etc. The jazz community in Los Angeles is very fortunate to have popular, beloved women, who go by the name of Barbara Morrison amongst us. Barbara Morrison and her team at the Barbara Morrison Performing Arts Center up the ante during Jazz Appreciation Month. Broadway in Leimert Park was the brainchild of Barbara Morrison, who not only impressed audiences with her legendary two-and-a-half octave range, and fun, electric stage presence. Ms. Morrison has paid it forward by establishing a Performing Arts Center in historic Leimert Park Village. The venue hosted a jammed -packed line-up of tributes to all of the greats from Ella & Dizzy to Holiday and Sinatra and beyond. On Saturday, April 30th, International Jazz Day, Barbara Morrison Performing Arts Center partnered with KJAZZ 88.1 (America’s #1 Jazz Station), and Co-sponsored by the City of Los Angeles for International Jazz Day Festival, “Swing Royale.” This was by far the biggest celebration of International Jazz Day on the West Coast, which paid tribute to jazz greats. International Jazz Day Festival was the grand finale to Jazz Appreciation Month Celebrations. International Jazz Day, in its fifth year, was created to highlight jazz and is a culmination of Jazz Appreciation Month. Its role is to unite people of all corners of the globe in their love of jazz. International Jazz Day also brought together communities, schools, artists and all music lovers to learn more about this unique and iconic genre, and to celebrate its roots, future and cultural impact it has made and continues to make. The local jazz community was well represented at this festival held at the Vision Theater Backlot on a windy, chilly day in beautiful Southern California. Leroy Downs, Program Host, KJAZZ FM 88.1FM served as Master of Ceremony. The program got underway with the amazing vocal styling of the great Dwight Trible. The Show shifted into high gear during the segment featuring Chester Whitmore and the Opus One Big Band tribute to the legacy and genius of Duke Ellington. The crowd and I were thoroughly entertained on several levels, we were thrilled with the sounds of The Opus One Big Band, and we went on a voyage through the history of dances from back in the day that is very popular with a new generation of swing dancers. The band’s upbeat, uptempo set consisted of the tunes “A Train,” “Chatterbox,” “Black Beauty,” “Cotton Tail,” “Cross the
