Hello Everyone, Just like MC Hammer said years ago, “We got to pray just to make it today.” It is still true today. We have no other choice but to pray and believe that God can intervene in our lives to bring some sense to what is happening across this nation with regards to the blatant disrespect of Black people. It is a shame before God that our Black president and his wife have to face awful attacks just because they are of the African race. God is trying to tell us something as a people and we need to listen. He is telling us that regardless of all the glass ceiling you think you have shattered when you get in the door you are still black and you better take heed and recognize your need to come together as a people and combine all our resources to do for each other. We have a trillion dollar consumer spending pattern that needs to be harnessed and leverage to our benefit and stop the blatant abuse. Keep trusting God.

EDITORIAL/OPINION Systemic Racism In America By Benjamin F. Chavis, Jr. NNPA Columnist The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) report on the Ferguson, Mo. Police Department sheds a brighter light on a serious racial injustice malignancy that is not isolated or unique to that besieged city. What the Justice Department concluded in Ferguson, after months of intense investigation, exposes a systematic pattern of injustice and inequality that can actually be found in many cities across the nation. This federal report presented facts with years of supporting data that revealed how racism was the decisive phenomenon in how the police and courts dealt disparagingly with Black Americans. Racial disparities in police departments and in judicial systems are not just local problems in a few municipalities that have been exposed as a result of a pattern of racial discrimination. This is a national problem that has persisted for decades in the United States. The absence of a cumulative national database on racially motivated police brutality and on judicial racial inequity is a contributing factor to this disgusting yet persistent societal contradiction. The Justice Department report concluded, “These disparities occur, at least in part, because Ferguson law enforcement practices are directly shaped and perpetuated by racial bias.” The good news is that in the aftermath of the details made public by the Justice Department provides a second opportunity for a more thorough national investigation. Racial justice activists and organizations should demand that the federal government perform a national investigation and audit of all major police departments and judicial systems concerning racial profiling, discrimination, abuse, police violence, prosecutorial misconduct and other forms of injustice based on race. Of course, most of us already know what the outcome of such a new national study would surely reveal. Black Americans and other people of color in the United States continued to endure long-term patterns of racial injustice not just in the so-called “criminal justice system,” but also in systems of health care, employment, housing, education, finance, and in exposures to multiple environmental hazards and toxicities. Systematic racism in America has not and does not occur my osmosis. It is intentional and deliberate. It is the result of the “power” of imposed and unabridged institutionalized racial bias, discrimination, bigotry, hatred, stereotyping and ignorance.

Another important and remarkable “revelation” of the DOJ report on Ferguson was the economic greed of that form of systematic racism. The report stated, “Ferguson’s law enforcement practices are shaped by the City’s focus on revenue rather than by public safety needs. This emphasis on revenue has compromised the institutional character of Ferguson’s police department, contributing to a pattern of unconstitutional policing, and has also shaped its municipal court, leading to procedures that raise due process concerns and inflict unnecessary harm on members of the Ferguson community.” The “harm” to the Ferguson community was and continues to be overwhelmingly targeted on Black Americans. Millions of dollars have been unjustly taken from the Black community in Ferguson and surrounding areas of St. Louis County as a direct result of the “unconstitutional” and illegal acts of police and court officials. Will the victims of the racism in Ferguson who have been financially fleeced and extorted by the law enforcement system be repaid or compensated? The family of young unarmed Michael Brown who was unjustly killed by Ferguson Police Officer Darren Wilson is going forward with a massive civil suit against Wilson, the police and the court system in Ferguson. The DOJ report should be used as conclusive evidence of the pattern and system of racial wrong doing in Ferguson. U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder did the right thing by ordering the DOJ investigation. Holder kept his public promise to stand by the people of Ferguson. In fact to the credit of his outstanding leadership at the DOJ, there have been more that 20 DOJ civil rights investigations into various other police departments in the U.S. during Holder’s tenure as Attorney General. Holder reaffirmed, “I again commit to the people of Ferguson that we will continue to stand with you and to work with you to ensure that the necessary reforms are implemented.” Thus, the struggle for racial justice continues in Ferguson and across the nation. The antidote to systematic racism in America is to support and empower Black Americans and other people of color in the transformation of the system of injustice in the U.S. into a fair and unbiased system of justice and equality for all people. EDUCATION & COMMUNITY NEWS Local Activist, Susan Burton, Join 50th Anniversary Historic March in Selma Susan Burton, recognized in the Los Angeles Times as one of the nation's prominent civil rights leaders today, will stand in solidarity with other advocates and movement builders on the 50th anniversary of the historic March in Selma. It was on Sunday, March 7, 1965 when nearly 600 people started a planned march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in a wellplanned and peaceful demonstration that resulted in what is known as "Bloody Sunday." It had been onehundred years since the end of the Civil War, and many African Americans were still facing barriers to vote. In Selma, African Americans made up almost half the population, but only two percent had managed to successfully register as voters. Discrimination and intimidation tactics blocked nearly every attempt to register and vote, and the march on the bridge was a courageous journey toward such a fundamental right. John Lewis was a key organizer of the march. The 25-year-old son of an Alabama sharecropper was the leader of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), an organization dedicated to ending segregation and to register-

ing black voters. The movement practiced nonviolence. Lewis and other leaders asked the demonstrators not to fight back against anyone who committed violence against them during the peaceful protest. The marchers paused for a moment, then kept walking. The sheriff warned the people that they had two minutes to break up the march, but the deputies attacked sooner. The demonstrators were tear-gassed, clubbed, spat on, whipped and trampled by

horses. Television and newspapers carried pictures of the event that became known as "Bloody Sunday," and a disgraced and horrified nation witnessed the shame. Fifty years later substantial barriers still exist, only now they are instituted in the age of mass incarceration. This weekend we stand with Susan Burton and all freedom seekers, truth-tellers and reform heroes to keep the march for justice alive. Until we are all free, none of us are free. CHURCH & COMMUNITY NES Evangelicals Say It Is Time for Congress To Tackle Immigration By Bob Smietana NASHVILLE, Tenn.-When it comes to immigration reform, American evangelicals want it all. Nine out of 10 (86 percent) want more border security. Six in 10 (61 percent) support a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants. More than two-thirds (68 percent) favor both. And they want Congress to take action soon. Those are among the results of a new survey of evangelicals from Nashville-based LifeWay Research. The study, sponsored by the Evangelical Immigration Table and World Relief, found widespread support for immigration reform. “ E v a n ge l i c a l s a r e united in their desire for significant immigration reform,” says Scott McConnell, vice president of LifeWay Research. A number of high profile evangelical groups have promoted immigration reform in recent years, including the National Association of Evangelicals and the National Latino Evangelical Coalition. Many evangelical pastors also support reform. A November 2014 LifeWay Research study found many pastors want a mix of justice and mercy when it comes to immigration. More than half (54 percent) support a path to citizenship. Most (91 percent) evangelical pastors also say the government should stop illegal immigration. In the February 2015 study, researchers found similar views among all evangelicals. Nine out of 10 (88 percent) say reform should respect the rule of law and secure the national borders (86 percent). They also want to protect the unity of immigrant families (72 percent) and to respect people’s God-given dignity (82 percent). More than two-thirds (68 percent) of evangelicals say it is important for Congress to take action on immigration reform this year. And half (50 percent) are more likely to vote for a candidate who supports border security and citizenship. “Evan gelicals care about immigrants and want immigration reform,” says Leith Anderson, president of the National Association of Evangelicals. “We pray for Congress to stop waiting and start legislating.” Evangelicals have some worries about immigration Researchers f oun d some differences by age and ethnicity among evangelicals. Those over age 64 (84 percent) are more likely to want Congress to act than those 18 to 34 (59 percent). Those 18 to 34 are more likely (72 percent) to say reform should include a path to citizenship. Hispanic evangelicals (79 percent) are more likely than white evangelicals (54 percent) to support a path to citizenship. Some evangelicals are

uneasy about the number of recent immigrants to the U.S., according to the survey. Almost half (48 percent) say immigrants drain the country’s economic resources. About a quarter (22 percent) say immigrants are a threat to law and order. One in 5 believe immigrants threaten traditional American customs and culture. Other evangelicals view immigration as a chance to love immigrants (40 percent) and or to share Jesus with newcomers (42 percent). Few connect faith and immigration Few evangelicals say their faith directly shapes their views about immigration. Resea rch er s as k ed evangelicals to list which factor has most influenced their beliefs about immigration. About one in 10 (12 percent) chose the Bible, and only 2 percent named their church. Among other influences: relationships with immigrants (17 percent), friends and family (16 percent) and the media (16 percent). LifeWay Research also found many churches don’t talk about immigration, and few take action on this issue. Two-thirds of evangelicals (68 percent) say their church has never encouraged them to reach out to immigrants. Still, evangelicals are interested in what their faith says on this topic. About half (53 percent) are familiar with the Bible’s teaching about immigrants. Two-thirds (68 percent) say they’d value hearing a sermon about the Bible’s views on immigration. "The sad part of this research on immigration is that American evangelicals are more influenced by the media than by their Bibles and their churches combined,” says Anderson. “We need to turn off our TVs and open up our Bibles.”

Human Trafficking in Modern America By Steven Malik Shelton “Violence is not good because it hurts and makes me cry.” Yeana- a ten tear old sextrafficking victim When the word slavery is mentioned, many think of the odious, incredibly brutal and exploitive practices of by-gone eras. And one conjures up images of chains, thumb screws, whips, and the filthy holds of slave ships stacked to the hilt with the bodies of kidnapped Africans. Or one might imagine the slavery of ancient Rome, with its tens of thousands of captive human beings working relentlessly to cultivate and expand the empire’s infrastructure or slave gladiators in the coliseum fighting under the threat of death and dismemberment. Yet slavery and the trafficking in human beings is still very much with us today in many forms, and experts say that it is more prevalent, although harder to detect, than in the past. According to statistics,

there is an estimated 35.8 million people enslaved worldwide.1 And the trafficking in human beings generates over 150 billion dollars in annual illegal revenue. Also modern slavery is thought to be the second largest

Toxic Profits

By Dean L. Jones, CPM Each year, candy makers alone rake in over $7 billion, ice cream sales bring in over $10 billion, and pastries average well over $33 billion. These general revenue figures are consequential from the main ingredient processed sugar, which has come about from everybody's incessant indulgence to satisfy a personal sweet tooth. Consequently, it is the teeth that suffer the most from eating all of these sugary treats, and it has been scientifically documented by the government for more than a century. The processed sugar industry has always taken complete influence over what the government says about eating sugaryfilled foodstuff. For instance, in the mid 20th Century, a U.S. governmental National Caries Program (NCP) was established to boost cavity prevention, which aimed to eradicate tooth decay by the end of the 1970s. Although the findings were completely evident surrounding the dangers of eating sugar, rather than recommending sixty years ago that people reduce sugar intake, this governmentfunded research focused on interventions that did not advise Americans to lower their sweets consumption. What took place instead was that the government campaigned and established legislation encouraging the wider use of fluoride and sealants in dental hygiene. The sugar industry power made that happen, and it is another example of the arrogant capitalistic configuration of the United States of America. Sugar was labeled as White Gold by the British Colonists, which was the definitive money engine of acquiring slave labor by forcing millions of African people to the Americas in the early 16th-century, to process the sugar-cane crops. The history of every nation in the Caribbean, much of South America and parts of the Southern United States was forever shaped by sugar cane plantations started by European industrialists. Huge profits were garnered from the sugar trade and that money

Dean L. Jones eventually aided America to achieve independence from Great Britain. Fast-forward, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report how tooth decay is the most common chronic disease among children and adolescents. Also, more than 2/3 of Americans are overweight or obese, which is not surprising since the average American eats146-pounds of flour and about 152-pounds of sugar a year. Being misled by the government and product marketing and labeling has steered parents into thinking that fruit drinks, sports drinks and flavored water are healthy options for kids. Although most know that soda pop is not good for children, too many choose to believe that sugary drinks are acceptable to quench your thirst. However, one should never be misled by of clever marketing around flavored waters, juices, sports drinks and even milk products. Ingesting processed sugar is basically a toxic substance. Do not become unduly influenced by tricky nutritional claims appearing on the packages, such as, low in calories, real, natural, contains vitamin C, antioxidants, and/or low in sodium. criminal industry in the world, overshadowed only by the drug trade, yet gaining ground even there. Sex trafficking, writes investigator, Lydia Cacho, “Reveals the normalization of human cruelty and the culture that has encouraged it. Each year 1.39 million people around the worldmostly women and girls- are subjected to sexual slavery. They are bought, sold, and re-sold like raw materials in any given industry, like social waste, like trophies and gifts.”2 Southeast Michigan, particularly the cities of Detroit and Southfield, is a hot-spot for human trafficking and sex slavery and the practice has been found in many cities throughout the state. In 2003, a forced prostitution ring was discovered when a 17 year old girl escaped from her captors and sought help from a security guard at a Detroit shopping mall. In 2005, several East European women testified that they were held hostage and forced to work as dancers in a Detroit strip club. In May of 2013, an online forced prostitution ring was busted at a hotel in Southfield. In July of 2013, federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies made arrests in a three day prostitution sweep. Several of the victims were juvenile girls that had been forced by pimps and other criminal reprobates into selling their bodies. “Ten juveniles have been rescued from the sex trade,” said Southfield Police Chief, Eric Hawkins. “And numerous dangerous individuals have been stopped from preying on these young victims.”3 And in March of 2014, a 51 year old man was sentenced to 40 years in prison for operating a prostitution and sex trafficking ring in Southfield. Child trafficking and sexual abuse is also a major crisis in West Michigan and experts say thousands of Michigan’s children are bought and sold into the sex trade every day. According to Rebecca McDonald, the president and founder of Women and Risk International: “Unfortunately the state department estimates in West Michigan alone, that there are 2, 400 minors for sale at any given time, mostly on the internet. And this is the land of the free.”4 Oakland County Commissioner, Janet Jackson is involved in several initiatives to combat sex slavery and human trafficking in Michigan. She has hosted events and workshops to shed light on the practice and brought together professional from

law enforcement, academia, and politics as well as victims and victim’s advocates. “In southeast Michigan, there have been unspeakable cases with tragic outcomes that have impacted the lives of families and communities due to human trafficking,” Jackson said. “It is time that we work to shed light on this issue.” According to UNICEF, approximately two million children are forced into slavery in the global sex trade. Many adults are also coerced, threatened or deceived into prostitution and all those involved in recruiting, transporting, harboring, receiving or obtaining the person for that purpose has committed a serious crime. Modern slavery consists of holding a person against their will (or ability to resist) in compelled servitude. And it has several basic forms and faces including forced labor (when a person is forced to work under threat of physical harm or mental torment without adequate compensation). Sex Trafficking (when a person is forced or deceived into prostitution). Bonded Labor (people around the world fall victim to debt bondage when traffickers or recruiters unlawfully exploit “debt” the worker assumed as part of employment or for transportation expenses). Involuntary Domestic Servitude (a form of slavery where a person in forced to do work in someone’s home and is also imprisoned in the residence unable to escape through the use of physical force or threats of harm to the person or to the person’s family). Child Labor (the sale and trafficking of children in various forms of forced labor). Child Soldiers (involves the unlawful use of children through force or fraud as combatants or for labor or sexual exploitation by armed forces.5 In whatever form it assumes, modern day slave traders prey on those that are considered most vulnerable, and these are usually people that are young and poor with little formal education. Many are disoriented and are abducted and frightened into submission by the use of physical, chemical, and psychological force and abuse. Yet no one is completely immune from victimization and human trafficking can cut across all distinctions of race, class or educational back ground. In the United States, children are often the ones that are targeted and forced into sexual slavery. ‘Federal law defines sex

trafficking as the exchange of a sex act for anything of value. It could include pornography, stripping, oral sex, massage parlors, etc. Anything of value could include a place to stay, a hamburger, or higher status in a gang. In many cases the victims are vulnerable children fighting to survive.”6 Reportedly, as penalties in the illegal drug trade become more severe, criminals have turned to the lucrative sex trade industry. And many of these criminals have become so bold and brazen that they actually kidnap children right off the streets, and some have even threatened the families of their victims with harm if they go to the police or attempt to retrieve their loved ones. Yet there is hope if we as a community work together to eliminate this criminal plague and assault on the very core of our humanity. “The amount of arrests that were occurring in the city of Southfield in the local motels made me very concerned because I grew up in Detroit in an area around 8 Mile where I witnessed prostitution or trafficking activities and what it could do to a community and the devastating effect on young women and girls who had been turned into sexual slaves,” said Jackson. “I saw the enticement and the activity in strip clubs where many of the women working there may not have been working voluntarily. So we have to intervene as a community and it’s a multi-layered approach. And as an elected official I have the reach to be able to involve our schools, our department heads, our other elected officials as well as access to national resources. A lot of our children are contacted by sexual predators via the internet, and I saw a need to monitor that as well. I also saw the necessity to introduce harsher penalties for those involved in sex trafficking and to eliminate the statute of limitation protections for them.” Sadly, a university of Pennsylvania study, which is considered to be the most comprehensive evaluation of child sex trafficking in the United States, concluded that tens of thousands of North American children are victims of juvenile pornography, prostitution and trafficking each year.7 Steven Malik Shelton is a journalist and human rights advocate. Los Angeles is Awarded 490 More HUD-VASH Vouchers to House Homeless Veterans LOS ANGELES— Mayor Eric Garcetti today announced that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and Department of Veteran’s Affairs (VA) awarded to the Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles (HACLA) 490 new HUD-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (VASH) vouchers to house chronically homeless veterans. Each VASH voucher includes a rental subsidy to pay rent and supportive services to help address physical and mental health and substance abuse issues. The VASH vouchers will be used to house 490 homeless veterans who have been homeless for over 12 months or four times in the last three years and have a serious disability. "Los Angeles is one step closer to ensuring that the men and women who served our nation are not left on the streets," said Mayor Eric Garcetti. "Our Veterans deserve to be treated with dignity and it is our job to provide them with all the support that they need. I would like to particularly thank HUD Secretary Julian Castro and the Veterans Affairs Secretary Robert A. McDonald for providing the federal support we need to stay on track to meet our goal to end veteran homelessness this year." Los Angeles has the largest concentration of homeless veterans in the nation. In 2014, Mayor Garcetti pledged to end veterans’ homelessness in the City by 2016. In the first year of the pledge, the City housed 3,375 homeless veterans. With a little less than a year left in the pledge, the City and its Pledge partner, Home for Good, estimate that there are 3,154 homeless veterans who will need housing in 2015.

This year’s VASH allocation is earlier than in prior years, in part to respond to the City’s efforts to end veterans’ homelessness by 2016. In prior years, HUD made the VASH allocations in August or September. Last fall, Mayor Garcetti asked HUD Secretary Julian Castro and VA Secretary Robert McDonald to allocate the 2015 VASH vouchers earlier. This earlier allocation will allow the City to more quickly house our homeless veterans. "HACLA has been working with partners across various sectors to come up with a sustainable solution to solve this critical issue," said HACLA President and CEO Douglas Guthrie. "This latest award of additional vouchers is crucial in that effort." With this award, HACLA now operates the largest VASH program in the nation. HACLA’s total allocation is now 3,669 HUD-VASH vouchers, providing more than $30 million of rental assistance per year. HUD-VASH is a joint program between the federal departments of HUD and Veterans Affairs, as well as local public housing agencies and VA Medical Centers. HUDVASH vouchers provide homeless and chronically homeless veterans with tenant-based permanent supportive housing, which means housing assistance coupled with individually appropriate supportive services needed to retain housing. Eligible homeless veterans are referred to HACLA by case managers from the Greater Los Angeles VA Medical Center and communitybased contractors. Case management and other supportive services are provided through the VA and VAfunded organizations.

COMMUNITY NEWS L.A. Councilmember and Former State Senator Gil Cedillo Endorses Steven Bradford GARDENA, CA - Los Angeles 1st district Councilmember Gil Cedillo announced today his support of Steven Bradford in the 2016 State Senate race for the 35th district. "Steven Bradford is my brother so there was never a doubt for me as to whether or not I would endorse him for Senate," Cedillo commented. "I met Steven twenty-five years ago in his mother's living room when he first ran for the Gardena City Council. I saw then his commitment to his community prompting me to eagerly walk precincts with him. Fast forward twenty years and we found ourselves both working on behalf of Californian's in the State's Legislature---Steven in the Assembly and myself in the Senate. What I admire most about Steven is that he hasn't changed in all of this time. It is still all about the community for him. I look forward to walking precincts for him again and his return to Sacramento." "Gil is someone who has truly demonstrated his promise to those of us who have the least amongst us," said Bradford.

Steve Bradford "He has championed and passed landmark legislation that has changed not only California but the nation. He's an unyielding and fearless warrior for the voiceless and undeserved. I'm truly humbled to count Gil as a friend and to have his endorsement and support for this next endeavor in my life." Gil Cedillo joins his colleagues on the Los Angeles City Council Curren Price, Mike Bonin and Bill Rosendahl (ret.) in supporting Bradford's candidacy. For a list of Bradford's en-

dorsements, please visit stevenbradfordforsenate.com/ endorsements. Bradford termed out of the state Assembly in 2014 and recently announced his intention to seek the 35th Senate district seat in 2016. The 35th district includes Carson, Compton, Gardena, Harbor City, Hawthorne, Inglewood, Lawndale, Lennox, Watts, Willowbrook and Wilmington. The California primary election will be held Tuesday, June 7, 2016 with a runoff election if needed on Tuesday, November 8, 2016. Bradford represented parts of the 35th Senate district for 18 years as a member of the California state Assembly and the Gardena City Council, and is known to have a solid track record of getting the job done for Californians locally and in Sacramento.
