'Shield' Actor Michael Jace Officially Charged with Wife's Murder By Alan Duke From CNN LOS ANGELES (CNN) -- Actor Michael Jace has been formally charged with one count of murder with a gun in the shooting death of his wife, the prosecutor's spokeswoman said Thursday. April Jace, 40, died from "multiple gunshot wounds," according to preliminary autopsy results. The death was ruled a homicide by the Los Angeles County coroner, Deputy Chief Coroner Ed Winter said. Jace, 51, made his first appearance in a Los Angeles courtroom Thursday afternoon. Bail was set at $2 million, and his arraignment was continued until June 18 at the defense's request. "He's doing as well as somebody who is in custody,"

We are now more than effort under attack by the enemy unseen. During this time of remembering our veterans and others who have gone on, let us remember that God is able to keep us in the midst. Let us pray for the young boys who no longer have a mother because of their father action. Keep them in prayer for God to comfort them and keep them in peace in the midst of the storm now raging in their young minds, possibly wondering why. God knows and he is the one to whom we entrust the little ones to for their needs in time of distress. Let us be forever mindful that God able to heal and make whole when nothing or anyone can. He is a loving God who tells us not to let our hearts be trouble and for us to believe in Him. The Browning of Public Schools after 'Brown' By George E. Curry (NNPA) This is the 60th anniversary of the landmark Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court decision outlawing “separate but equal” schools. And like most major anniversaries, incorrect information surfaces as purported fact, doing a disservice to the accomplishment being celebrated as well as truth itself. In this instance, some have asserted that because of re-segregation, public schools in the South, where most African Americans live, are more segregated now than when Brown was handed down. That is simply untrue and if you want to read a comprehensive account of what has truly happened in school desegregation over the past 60 years, there is no better source than “Brown at 60: Great Progress, a Long Retreat and an Uncertain Future,” published by The Civil Rights Project at UCLA. First, let’s dispense with the nonsense. “The claims that black students in the South are no better off than they were before Brown, in terms of segregation, are obviously wrong,” the report stated. “They are ten times as likely to be in majority-white schools as they were when the Civil Rights Act passed.” The 42-page report is packed with illuminating facts about progress made in the wake of Brown and the subsequent retrenchment. But to appreciate the significance of Brown, it is necessary to understand what our schools looked like before the court decision. “Nine years after Brown, when President John Kennedy called for the first major civil rights act of the 20th century, 99% of blacks in the South were still in totally segregated schools,” the report recounted. “Virtually no whites were in historically black schools, nor were black teachers and administrators in white schools. For all practical purposes, it was segregation as usual or ‘segregation forever,’ as some of the South’s politicians promised. In the great majority of the several thousand southern districts nothing had been done.” Actually, there were two Brown decisions. The first, issued in 1954, outlawed segregated public schools masquerading as “separate but equal.” The court ruled that “segregation is inherently unequal” and ordered the desegregation of schools. With no progress after a year, the court ordered in 1955, in a ruling sometimes called Brown II, that desegregation had to be carried out “with all deliberate speed.” But racial segregation was deliberate and speed was missing in action. In fact, nine years after Brown, 99 percent of Blacks in the South were still in segregated schools. “President Lyndon Johnson powered the historic 1964 Civil Rights Act through Congress with bipartisan support, and he proceeded to enforce civil rights law more forcefully than an Administra-
tion before or since,” the report stated. “After he also led the battle for the largest federal education aid program in American history, the Southern schools changed. Faced with the dual prospect of losing federal funds if they remained segregated, as well as the threat of a Justice Department lawsuit as a result of the Civil Rights Act, almost all the districts began to desegregate. Strongly backed by the federal courts, federal civil rights officials raised desegregation requirements each year. In 1968 the Supreme Court unanimously ruled that desegregation in the historically segregated states must be comprehensive and immediate. By 1970 Southern schools became the nation’s most integrated.” Nationwide, the percent of Blacks attending majority White schools has declined from a high of 43.5 percent in 1988 to 23.2 percent in 2011, about the same level it was 1968. This did not happen by accident. “Throughout the l980s there was a strong legal attack on desegregation orders, led by the Reagan and Bush administrations’ Justice Departments and, in l991, the Supreme Court authorized the termination of desegregation plans in the Oklahoma City (Dowell) decision. The decline in black student access has been continuous since l991,” the report observed. The report documents the strong connection between segregated schools and concentrated poverty. “In schools that are 81-100% black & Latino, over threequarters of the students are also enrolled in schools where more than 70% of the students live in poverty,” it stated. “In fact, half of students in 91-100% black & Latino schools are in schools that also have more than 90% low-income students. This means that these students face almost total isolation not only from white and Asian students but also from middle class peers as well.” In its recommendations section, the report observes that while education is primarily a state responsibility, the federal government also has an important role to play. Sadly, the report points out, there has not been a major national study on school desegregation, its costs and solutions since Racial Isolation in Public Schools, a report requested in 1967 by President Johnson. Non-government organizations also have a role to play. The report stated, “Civil rights organizations need to develop new strategies and legal theories to end the reversal and restart the movement toward a successfully integrated, truly multiracial society, as was done by the NAACP and Howard University in the campaign that led to Brown.” George E. 60-Year Journey from 'Brown' By Julianne Malveaux (NNPA) Because I was a horribly illbehaved child, I found myself shipped from San Francisco to Moss Point, Miss. in August 1969. My mother’s plan was that I’d spend my junior year in high school there and live with my schoolteacher aunt, Annie Mae Randall, who was somewhat affectionately known as the “kid breaker.” It was legend that if you did not understand rules, she would beat them into you, but her method was unlimited interrogation, not physical correction (much). In any case, I landed in Moss Point 15 years after the Supreme Court ruled that legal segregation was illegal. However, by ruling that the Brown decision should be implemented with “all deliberate speed,” many towns in Mississippi saw this as a signal to “take your own sweet time.” I ended up attending all-Black Magnolia High School, while the all-White Moss Point High School was in rather close proximity. A year later, Magnolia became the town’s junior high school, and Moss Point High was the school for everyone. Until 1970, though, the city’s educators had come up with truly bizarre ways to give a polite nod to integration. For a period, Black teachers went to teach in White schools, while White ones taught in the Black schools. To this day, I can’t figure out the proportional representation that had Black teachers in the White schools about a third of the time, with White teachers in the Black schools about half of the time. My numbers may be wrong, but both Black and White students were short-changed when they were robbed of the continuity of instruction. On the days that Auntie Annie Mae had to go to the White schools, she woke up muttering that this was not integration, and mumbling that “all these years after Brown” integration had not happened in Moss Point schools. Since the “kid breaker” didn’t really yell, she took her frustration out on anyone who would listen, talking legalisms, history, and the way it ought to be. Occasionally Auntie would say, “at least we aren’t in Virginia,” then she would talk about
the schools that actually closed rather than admit Black students. In that state developed a plan of “massive resistance” that denied funds to integrated schools that had the effect of denying education to Black children for at least four years. In 1969, most African Americans had experienced de facto segregation, but few Californians had experienced the de jure segregation that Brow ended. Without the Mississippi experienced, I would have thought that segregation was as much a fairy tale as Santa Clause, or as distant as “the old days. Neither fairy tale, nor distant fact, de jure segregation is alive and well today. Today, schools are segregated by income and zip code, not by race. Cash-strapped urban school systems, largely funded by eroding property taxes, have fewer resources than well-funded suburban schools. There are also oases in urban public schools where higher income parents come together to fund activities at their neighborhood schools, such as sports and music that have been eliminated from other public schools for financial reasons. K-12 school segregation transfers into an advantage for students from the best-financed schools. These young people have the advantage of Advanced Placement (AP) and international Baccalaureate (IB) classes that are not often offered in those urban school districts struggling to provide bare basics. When colleges give students with advanced classes extra admissions consideration, they implicitly disadvantage those who did not have the opportunity to take advanced classes because of where they live. There are dozens of other consequences to defacto segregation, including the racial achievement gap and unequal access to scholarships, internships, networking, and employment opportunities. Brown opened the door and, by ending de facto segregation, changed the terms and conditions of African American life. It got us to the starting line, but now, 60 years later, we are still a long way from the finish line. Julianne Malveaux is a Washington, D.C.-based economist and writer. EDUCATION & COMMUNITY NEWS “Put Our Children 1st: Common Core for Common Goals" Campaign Teaches Parents About New Education Standards for Children LOS ANGELES—Today, the Los Angeles Urban League joined the National Urban League to announce the launch of an education campaign, Put Our Children 1st: Common Core for Common Goals, designed to inform parents about Common Core State Standards, what they are and what they mean for students. The campaign will also provide parents with vital tools and resources they need to ensure that their children successfully transition to and receive the full benefits of these new, high-quality academic standards in English language arts and math. By raising standards for everyone, the Common Core can help bridge the education achievement gap and create a level playing field for all students to excel regardless of family income, ethnicity or where they live. The Put Our Children 1st campaign includes several communications and engagement activities aimed at increasing understanding of the Common Core among parents so that they are empowered to become true partners in their children’s education and success. Campaign activities include a series of facilitated local Parent Circles
that will take place between April and September of this year. During these events, parents and concerned community members will learn and provide feedback about how the Standards are being implemented; what they and their children can expect from the new standards; what resources and tools are available to them; and what parents can do to help ensure that the standards are equitably resourced and implemented. -Nolan V. Rollins Put Our Children 1st will also include digital and social media components, public service announcements (PSAs), thought leadership and other content creation, and ongoing education-focused events across the identified cities, where participants will also have the opportunity for regular parent-to-parent engagement. and March 2014 in the four campaign markets affirmed grassroots parental support for the Common Core, but it also confirmed that more must be done to increase public awareness of the standards. Half of the total parents surveyed were not aware of Common Core State Standards – despite their current adoption in 44 states and the District of Columbia – with slightly more than half (56 percent) of those saying they understand the goals and requirements of the new learning standards. Parents in Los Angeles indicated similar levels of awareness with 48 percent indi-
Building Bonds between Dads and Kids (Family Features) For many adults, the times spent with their fathers are among their most treasured memories. However, today as many as one in three children in America live in a home where a biological father is not present. The reasons for paternal absence can vary. For example, fathers may stay distant from a child out of fear of being inadequate or failing the child. Despite difficult circumstances, in many cases there are solutions that allow fathers to maintain an important presence in their children’s lives. The following are many of the common reasons for fathers’ absences along with guidance on how to help resolve the situation, provided by Dr. Janet Taylor, an author and community psychiatrist. Guilt Many fathers have guilt for not having the financial means to buy things for their kids. Fathers need to understand their children love them because they are their father and not because of the “things” they give them. “A father’s time and involvement in a child’s life is a true gift,” Dr. Taylor says. “Give the gift of your time and it will mean the world to them.” Family Conflict Disputes among family members may also keep a father away. When conflicts arise with a mother, grandparents or other family members, a child should know he or she is not the problem, Dr. Taylor cautions. Doubts about paternity
can be an especially trying source of family conflict. A paternity test can help eliminate this uncertainty. Dr. Taylor advocates for fathers to make an effort to spend time with their children in the midst of conflict, even if circumstances dictate that time together is in a group setting rather than one-on-one. Dr. Taylor calls parenting the ultimate “on the job training.” She recommends working to make a connection to break the cycle from repeating in the next generation. Fathers Have Value “Fathers also need to recognize their value in their kids’ lives,” Dr. Taylor says. A
recent survey sponsored by Identigene found that most Americans who are looking to address a paternity issue understand there are many benefits of having a biological father in a child’s life, including providing the child with a sense of family and self (73%), enhancing the child’s self-esteem (70%) and offering the child with a masculine parental figure (69%). According to Fatherhood.org, children who do not have a father figure in their life are more likely to endure financial hardship, use drugs, quit school or engage in criminal behavior. “This data serves as a testament that a father’s active participation does make a difference,” Dr . Everyday Chores Made Easy (Family Features) Chores are an important part of teaching children about responsibility. Make sure to give lots of encouragement along the way as well as positive feedback once the chore is complete. Chores by age group: As children grow older, their abilities change and their responsibilities should adjust accordingly. Here are some examples of chores that are appropriate for each age group. Bain who served as director of the Regional Coordinating
Unit of the Caribbean HIV/AIDS Regional Training (CHART) Network gave his testimony on behalf of a group of churches that lobbied to retain Belize's sodomy law in 2012. CHART works to "continually strengthen the capacity of national healthcare personnel and systems to provide access to quality HIV & AIDS prevention, care, treatment, and support services for all Caribbean people."

Investigators have found no reports of domestic violence between the husband and wife at their south Los Angeles residence, another LAPD detective said. A woman described as a close friend of Jace's first wife said in a sworn statement that she witnessed Jace physically abusing his wife in 1997. The declaration was in court records from Jace's 2005 custody case concerning his son with Jennifer Bitterman. Jace "choked and hit" his wife and "slammed her against the wall while (their infant son) screamed in his crib next to her," Maria De Le Vegas said in the sworn declaration obtained by CNN. Jace "was raging and out of control, and seeing the extent of his anger was one of the most terrifying things I have ever seen," she said. Jace appeared to be suffering severe financial strain in recent years, according to court documents obtained by CNN. The actor filed for Chapter 13 bankruptcy in March 2011, citing $500,000 in debts and an annual income of around $80,000 from residuals from his TV and film work, the documents said. Jace had defaulted on the $411,000 mortgage on the south Los

"We are obviously shocked and saddened by this terrible news, to lose a wonderful colleague, mother and friend," Biola President Barry Corey said in a written statement. "April's radiant personality brought great energy to the financial aid office," financial aid director Geoff Marsh said. "Her love for helping students and families and her great work ethic earned the respect and love of her coworkers. Her smiling face and helpful spirit will be missed by all."
Professor Bain, who reportedly opened Jamaica's first medical clinic dedicated to the care and treatment of persons living with HIV/AIDS, is a practicing Christian who serves as an elder at the Mona Heights Chapel in Kingston, Jamaica. "The issue in question arose about two years ago in a high-profile case in Belize in which Caleb Orozco, a gay man in Belize, challenged the constitutionality of an 1861 law that criminalizes men having sex with men (MSM). Professor Brendan Bain provided a Statement on behalf of a group of churches seeking to retain the 1861 Law," explained the University of the West Indies in a statement on Bain's dismissal Tuesday. "Many authorities familiar with the Brief presented believe that Professor Bain's testimony supported arguments for retention of the law, thereby contributing to the continued criminalization and stigmatization of MSM. This opinion is shared by the lesbian, gay and other groups who are served by CHART," it continued. In his testimony, a copy of which is provided at the end of this report, Bain, based on his decades of research and experience in the field, presented high risk factors associated with men sleeping with other men and argued that as a public health practitioner, behavior which poses serious costs and risks to public health should not be encouraged. "This report shows that the relative risk of contracting HIV is significantly higher among men who have sex with other men (MSM) in Belize than in the general population. This is also true in several other countries for which data are available, including countries that have repealed the law that criminalizes anal sex and countries where the law still applies," Bain noted in the summary of his testimony. "This report also shows clearly that HIV should not be the only consideration in relation to the matter at hand. Available data from several parts of the world indicate that the relative risk of acquiring and spreading other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and cancers is unacceptably high among MSM when compared to other men and women," he added. The university argued, however, that criminalizing men having sex with men is not a position supported by most HIV and public health experts. "The majority of HIV and public health experts believe that criminalizing men having sex with men and discriminating against them violates their human rights, puts them at even higher risk, reduces their access to services, forces the HIV epidemic underground thereby increasing the HIV risk," noted the university. "These are the positions advocated by the UN, UNAIDS, WHO, PAHO, the international human rights communities and PANCAP (The Pan Caribbean Partnership against AIDS) which is the organization leading the regional response to the HIV epidemic," it added. The university further explained that the community served by CHART had lost confidence in Professor Bain due to his controversial testimony and that was the reason he was fired. HEALTH & COMMUNITY NEWS Ask the Pharmacist: Understanding the Dangers of Low Blood Sugar (BPT) - The numbers are astounding - nearly 400 million people worldwide suffer from diabetes and many patients may not realize they are at risk for a condition known as hypoglycemia. Hypoglycemia is characterized as dangerously low blood sugar levels that could cause serious side-effects including hospitalization. Jay Belcher, is a specialist pharmacist in Express Scripts Diabetes Therapeutic Resource Center, and counsels patients who may not be aware of their risk for hypoglycemia. "Normally, our body has a natural response that is triggered when blood sugar levels drop below a normal level," says Belcher. "However, in some people with diabetes, this response is impaired. Certain medications used to treat
diabetes, such as insulin, can also prevent glucose levels from easily returning to the normal range." There are certain people at increased risk for hypoglycemia - including those with chronic diabetes and type 1 diabetes patients. "People with type 1 diabetes are at increased risk because they may not show early warning signs of low blood glucose, a condition called hypoglycemia unawareness," says Belcher. "This means an individual no longer experiences early warning symptoms such as shakiness, sweating, anxiety and hunger; raising their risk of lapsing into severe hypoglycemia." Fruit to the Rescue By Dean L. Jones, CPM The American Diabetes Association supports eating fruits, since they are loaded with vitamins, minerals, and fiber and should be a part of a diabetic diet. The key is to keep an eye on portion sizes and stay away from fruits canned in syrups or other types of added sugar. Yesterday I was walking back to my car in a shopping parking lot while passing a lady sitting in her car, she asked if I could buy an apple juice for her mother who was slightly slumped over in the front passenger seat. The lady quickly explained how her mother was diabetic and her blood sugar had dropped dramatically (probably around 70) and that she was too shaky and feeling weak to leave her unattended. I was able to complete the request swiftly, but thought what are the odds of me running into a situation like this? Well, probably pretty high since 26 million Americans have type 2 diabetes. We are in a serious epidemic of people experiencing out-of-balanced blood sugar (glucose) levels. This condition causes high glucose levels in the blood that can damage the nerves and small blood vessels of the eyes, kidneys, and heart and lead to atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries that can cause a heart attack and/or stroke. In view of that, more of us should take advantage of packing and eating fruit. Fresh fruit has a low-glycemic index (GI) that aids in properly circulating glucose levels and satisfies the sweet tooth. An apple kept somewhere while being on the go will probably be a great rescue food. Even a small apple has 54 calories and 14 carbohydrate grams that comes loaded with fiber and vitamin C. It is the apple peel (skins) that has the great antioxidants, so eat it all. Berries are a diabetes super food because they are packed
mild and can be treated quickly and easily by consuming a small amount of a glucose-rich food or drink. Unfortunately the condition can rapidly worsen causing confusion, clumsiness or fainting; in fact, severe hypoglycemia can lead to seizures, coma and even death. Belcher offers the following tips to help prevent hypoglycemia: * Timing is everything: As with all medications, always take your diabetes medications in the recommended dosage
and at the recommended times. Some diabetes medications can cause hypoglycemia. If you have questions, talk to your physician or specialist pharmacist who can help explain how and when to take these medications. * Watch what you eat: Following a meal plan is important for managing diabetes. Have enough food during each meal, avoid skipping meals and try healthy snacking (if recommended). If you are struggling with your food intake, work
with a registered dietician who can help design a meal plan that fits your personal preferences and lifestyle. Eating right will help you manage your diabetes. * Exercise responsibly: Check your blood glucose before sports, exercise, or other physical activity and adjust medication if necessary. Plus, have a snack handy if your levels fall below 100 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL). Also, check blood glucose at regular intervals during extended periods of physical activity and periodically after physical activity and adjust medications if necessary. * Limit alcohol consumption: Drinking alcoholic beverages, especially on an empty stomach, can cause hypoglycemia. Heavy drinking can be particularly dangerous for people taking insulin or medications that increase insulin production. Only consume alcohol with a snack or meal. (BPT) - Stress can kill you and the longer you experience stress the worse your health can become. In fact, exposure to long term stress causes the body to produce several hormones that can lead to anxiety, depression, digestive problems, heart disease, trouble sleeping, obesity, and memory loss, according to the Mayo Clinic. Both men and women suffer from stress but women are more susceptible to stress-related conditions, which can also include infertility. Stress levels can also increase significantly when economic times are tough. In England, the British Health and Social Care Information Centre found that stress increased by 47 percent during that country's recession and that stress was the single biggest cause of sickness in the UK, affecting 20 percent of the population. Professor Cary Cooper of Lancaster University, a known expert on stress, was alarmed and told The Independent, "I have never seen figures like this before. Stress is a trigger mechanism for a whole range of conditions, from heart attacks to immune system disorders, mental illness and depression and anxiety." Many times people will turn to food to help them relieve stress and there is a scientific reason for this. Salty
snacks actually help your body reduce stress levels. Stress is characterized in the human body by high levels of the hormone cortisol, referred to as the "stress hormone." Scientific research has shown, both in animals and in humans, that increased levels of salt consumption are very effective in reducing levels of cortisol. Now, new research from the University of Haifa published in the science journal Appetite (has confirmed the relationship between salt and stress in humans. Researchers found an inverse correlation between salt and depression/stress, especially in women. In essence, the body is self-regulating to prevent stress and depression by making us crave salt. Professor Micah Leshem reviewed data from the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) using 10,000 individuals and demonstrated that depression and stress were higher in individuals who consumed less salt, a trend more prevalent in women than men. He noted that the relationship of higher depression with lower salt intake in humans was consistent with the results of animal studies. He went on to question whether the voluntary selection of salty food choices was a biological defense
mechanism that evolved to cope with daily stress. Professors Pavel and Leshem also found that young people, up to the age of 19, selectively choose foods that are higher in salt, indicating a natural feedback mechanism driving them to consume higher salt foods and rewarding them with more vigorous growth. This begs the question; if we restrict the salt intake of young people will their growth be diminished? Despite the many clear benefits of salt-intake in a person's diet, various national and governmental organizations are calling for drastic reductions in the amount of salt people consume. However, a new study published in the American Journal of Hypertension found that the average American is already consuming the right amount of sodium for optimal health outcomes and that the low sodium levels currently recommended by the CDC and major health departments are now viewed by many in the scientific community as excessively and unrealistically low. The fact remains that whether they are called comfort foods or mood stabilizers, salty foods are incredibly effective at making people feel better and reducing heightened stress levels.

Pasadena Real Estate Broker and Associate Arrested and Charged with $2.3 Million in Mortgage Fraud On May 1, 2014, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office charged 55-year-old Allen Shay of Pasadena, and 44-year-old Eddie Turner of Altadena, with multiple felony counts of Grand Theft, Recording False Documents and Perjury. The Los Angeles County Superior Court case number is BA424226. Allen Shay is a licensed real estate broker, a former candidate for the Pasadena City Council, and a current appointed member of Pasadena’s Northwest Commission. Eddie Turner is a former licensed real estate salesperson. In January, 2005, Eddie Turner purchased a residential property on Altadena Drive in Altadena for $1.12 million. Mr. Turner borrowed $896,000 from Countrywide Home Loans to make the purchase. In August, 2005, Mr. Turner borrowed another $250,000 from Countrywide Home Loans and used the Altadena property as collateral. It is alleged that the employment, income and financial information, including a counterfeit bank statement, submitted by Mr. Turner to obtain the loans, were false. In March, 2007, Eddie Turner, with the assistance of Allen Shay, refinanced the Altadena property and obtained two new loans from Countrywide Home Loans, one for $1,000,000 and another for $218,000. The loans obtained in 2007 paid off the previous loans obtained in 2005. It is alleged that the employment, income and financial informa-

Mr. Turner and Mr. Shay also misrepresented the source of a $29,916 down payment which was deposited into escrow to obtain the loans. In January, 2008, Eddie Turner stopped making his mortgage payments. That same year, Bank of America acquired Countrywide Home Loans and attempted to foreclose on the Altadena property. Mr. Turner was able to avoid foreclosure by transferring the Altadena property to a trust, filing bankruptcy, and applying for a loan modification. In 2012, when it appeared that foreclosure was imminent, it is alleged that Mr. Turner filed a false identity theft report with the Sheriff’s Department claiming he did not take out the 2007 loans, and filed a lawsuit under penalty of per-

While investigating Mr. Turner’s identity theft claim, sheriff’s detectives learned that Mr. Turner had in fact applied for, and received, the 2007 loans. During the course of the investigation, detectives also uncovered the alleged fraudulent acts committed by Mr. Turner and Mr. Shay to obtain the loans. STATE / NATIONAL & WORLD NEWS Black Women On A Quest To Strip Asians Of Their Hair Industry Dominance The beauty industry involves black women from all corners of the world as customers, stylists, clinicians, models, manufacturers, spokespersons and more. The ethnic beauty business is a $15 billion business that consists of a 96% AfricanAmerican customer base, but roughly only 3% of the retailers are African-American. There has been talk in salons, on talk shows, at events and classrooms on what should be done about the disparities and discriminations in the industry. Some say boycott hair products, while others say boycott Asianowned stores. However, there has been another group of individuals who have decided to take a more bold approach. Real Estate investor, Princess Hill, and award-winning competition and master stylist, Kelly Williams, who are long-time friends and Detroit natives decided to open their own beauty supply store in Detroit, Michigan, a city that has been hit harshly by the downsizing of the auto industry and the political scandal of former mayor Kwame Kilpatrick. market. When we asked the Detroit store owners why, they said, “Their communities teach their children from young how to become great merchants. We may know more of the products but they know more about the retail business. This is why we were pleased once we began working with Beauty Supply Institute. They focus so much on running the retail business and it made us extremely prepared to be successful and profitable.” They went on to say, “No black beauty business owner is immune to the industry disparities and lockouts. The revamped proposal, unveiled as negotiations over the state budget are heating up, comes at a time when a call for what is known as universal pre-K is gaining traction around the country. President Barack Obama called for a broad expansion of public pre-school in his State of the Union speech last year, though the move stalled in Congress. Bill de Blasio made universal pre-K a centerpiece of his successful New York mayoral campaign. "From our perspective, 'low-income' includes

The proposal would provide kindergarten preparatory classes for about 234,000 children, about half the number who would have been served under the earlier, more a mb itious progra m, Steinberg's office said. The proposal and a similar measure in the state assembly have wide support among Democrats. Steinberg's plan would start in the 2015-2016 school year. He says $900 million of the total cost could be taken from a program for children who turn 5 too late in the year for kindergarten.
