Dear PDS ® Teammates,
Message From the PRESIDENT
BACK TO THE BASICS WITH HOPE FOR THE NEW YEAR
It’s undeniable that PDS is an innovative industry leader. The execution of the Perfect Patient Experience (PPE) ® , consistent structured meetings and an unrelenting focus on creating Patients for Life ® are each at the root of what makes us great. Recently, however, there’s been some slippage. As one dentist told me, it’s easy to be average in dentistry; it’s really hard to be great. When our core systems and structures are not well executed, a dental practice leaves too much to chance. As I look forward to our future, I ask all of you to join me in remaining true to our core systems and structures, so we can continue our vision of being the greatest dental company in America.
Our Core Operating Model
Over a decade ago, we developed the PPE® as an operational model that enables a transaction (patients getting dentistry) to happen between the clinician and the patient. The model remains the same today. If the transaction doesn’t happen, generally the PPE has failed. Each person in the
office has an obligation to set the next person up for success. I encourage you to hold yourselves and each other accountable to delivering the PPE. When done right, the end result is Patients for Life.
Our Core Structured Meetings Morning huddles help get us ready for a productive day. Engaging staff meetings twice a month help educate and align the team. Detailed monthly operations and financial reviews are critical for practice health. All are key to the long term success of a practice. These meetings create the time and space to have crucial conversations, provide feedback, and discuss opportunities. After all, a dental practice is a business, and these are the minimum requirements to ensure healthy operations.
I’ve been sharing my optimism for the company and our industry during the recent Town Halls. It’s a great time to be a dentist and to be in the dental field. And I know we have the best people and
the best systems, so we’re well-poised for continued and consistent success.
Finally, please know that I’m grateful for all of you and your hard work during this special time and throughout the year.
Blessings,

Stephen Thorne IV, President

SMILE GENERATIO N
SERVING FROM COAST TO COAST
By Kyle Guerin, Sr. Manager, We Serve
From Miami, FL, to Snohomish, WA, from Richfield, MN, to P flugerville, TX, on Saturday, August 20, over 4,000 Smile Generation® volunteers took time out of their busy lives to make an impact in the lives of others. Over 490 PDS® -supported offices participated in a fun day of serving and smiles. Together over 2,200 patients were served and provided over $4 million in donated dentistry. Not only that, but team members from PDS National Support Center spent Saturday serving their local communities by participating in a beach clean-up, and helping out at a food bank and community fair.
Since Smile Generation Serve Day was founded in 2011, over 10,200 patients have been served and provided over $15.8 million in donated dentistry!
The collective numbers are astounding and impressive, but the stories coming from each and every local office are what move us to do what we do, like the single mom who will smile again, and the out of work individual who receives treatment he or she thought was out of reach.

The other day, I received a card in the mail addressed to the Smile Generation, and I think this patient represents why we do the work we do:
“I can’t begin to thank you all enough for your generosity and caring hearts. Thank you for what you do to help people in other countries and here in the USA. I feel so lucky to have been chosen for your ‘serve’ day. I will never forget this for the rest of my life.”
Sincerely, Renee
One day, one office, one patient … a lifetime of impact. Thank you to everyone who participated. Save the date for Smile Generation Serve Day 2017: Saturday, August 19.

BRAV E
PACIFIC SOUTH COAST REGION | Jackson STEM Academy
There is a school in Altadena, CA that has served the community for many years. Generations have attended, and recently it has been rebranded as Jackson STEM Dual Language Magnet School. Jackson STEM offers year-round quality education for its community and surrounding neighborhoods in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Annually it serves around 700 children in the community. It previously had a broken-down, rusty playground that had been around almost as long as the original school. The school was desperate for a new place to play. Thankfully for this community, it resides in the Pacific South Coast Region, and they have a “Braveheart.”
Braveheart came together with one of our favorite charitable partners, KaBOOM! (whose mission is to save play), with a plan to transform the playground.
The event was kicked off by a design day, where kids were able to design their perfect playground. Six weeks later, nearly 200 volunteers came together to turn the kids’ dreams into a reality. Not only did the volunteers build a playground and do incredible side projects, but through the assistance of the Pacific Dental Services ® Foundation, they provided 71 patients with over $44,000 in donated dentistry.
“We were blown away with the generosity of The Smile Generation ® !” said PTA community member Liliana Awori. “Not only did they come in and build this beautiful playground, but the opportunity for our community to get dental work that they need has been an incredible blessing. It brings me to tears thinking of all the kids that will get the opportunity to play on this playground.”
It all starts with a heart to make the world a better place, continues with a vision of how to make that happen, and it finishes with hands that are willing to serve. On that Saturday in October, there were many hands and hearts willing to serve. Thank you to everyone who participated creating an impact for generations to come!

SOUTHWEST REGION | Salvation Army Door of Hope
Door of Hope in San Diego is a Salvation Army housing center for women and children who are homeless or who have been victims of trafficking. Door of Hope works diligently with all their residents to help them overcome the obstacles and issues that have led to their homelessness. Being one of the few centers in San Diego that reserves space specifically for victims of human trafficking, they make sure it is not just shelter they are providing, but intense therapy for the women they work with and the children who shared in their trauma. Door of Hope has a clear understanding of how play impacts the positive development of the children they work with, and how to utilize play to grow, and sometimes help repair the relationships between the parents and their children. Door of Hope was desperate for a playground. They reached out to KaBOOM!, and KaBOOM! reached out to The Smile Generation ® .
One of the rewards of winning Region of the Year is an opportunity to build a playground in the winning region’s community. The Southwest Region, our PDS ® Region of the Year, chose San Diego and Door of Hope to benefit from its efforts.
On Saturday, November 5, over 150 volunteers showed up to change the lives of others and bring a playground to the women and children at Door of Hope. Not only did this group build a playground, but they also built:
• Four adult Mendocino benches
• Three trash and recycling bins
• Four child-size picnic tables
• A bulletin board
• Two adult-size picnic tables
• One ADA-accessible picnic table
• A life-size Jenga set
• A set of soccer goals
• A music wall
• Two child Mendocino benches
• Two storage cubes
Additionally, they painted hopscotch and other games on the concrete, and raked three cubic yards of dirt.
Volunteers also had the opportunity to see nearly 100 patients and provide over $64,000 in donated dentistry through the help of the Pacific Dental Services ® Foundation. For some of these woman and children, it was the first time they had ever been to see a dentist. They were moved to tears with the generosity of the dentists willing to help them. Megan Dowell, the director of Door of Hope, said, “I can’t express how grateful we all are for all that you have done.”
Tears also flowed as the Southwest Region said goodbye to Joanna Rodgers. She is transitioning from her role as Regional Partner to her new role as Sr. Vice President of People at National Support and passing the reigns to Regional Partners Mike Butler and Maha Said-Shariff.
It was a beautiful day all around. Thank you to everyone who participated and who showed they had a “Braveheart.”

My Ethiopia Experience
By Dr. Brian Polillo
PDS® -supported Owner Dentist

“We were able to see over 504 patients and donate over $400,000 worth of dentistry to a population that would have received less-than-ideal care, if any care at all, without us.”

The opportunity to travel to Ethiopia to donate my time and services supported by the Pacific Dental Services® Foundation was an amazing experience. A humanitarian trip of this nature has a dual impact on those involved. Obviously, one prong of the good that was done is the physical treatment performed for the patients we served. With our team of five PDS-supported dentists (Dr. Tanisha Jackson, Dr. Walter Jefferson, Dr. Bobby Soleiman, Dr. Joan To and myself), two hygienists (Brittany Field and Brooke Wilson), four dental assistants (Ruthann Anderson, Nicole Juarez, Kellie Patterson, Walter Moran) and several amazing helpers (Judy Forsythe, Kyle Guerin, Mark Laramore, Jeff McHugh, Kiana Soleiman and Hannah Wait) we were able to see over 504 patients and donate over $400,000 worth of dentistry to a population that would have received less-than-ideal care, if any care at all, without us. We worked ourselves to exhaustion (and in my case “intestinal distress”), and we loved every second of it. It’s easy to point to something concrete of this nature to measure the success of the trip, and successful we were.
The deeper impact is the perspective it gave me. As a PDS-supported owner dentist, my day is typically run by patients’ needs, the needs of my staff, and the needs of the office to stay running efficiently. It’s easy to fall into this routine of success/stress and forget why I began the profession of dentistry in the first place, which was simply to help those in need.
When I think about memorable patient experiences during this trip (of which there are too many to list), I recall a root canal on a 16-year-old who looked about 12, I assume because of malnourishment. His central incisor was fractured and he had been in pain for a while. He literally waited all day only to be told he would be the first patient we would see the following morning. After waiting all night, his procedure went well and he was extremely grateful for the work we had done. Can you imagine what would happen if you had a patient waiting for hours in your office, and then you told them to come back the next day? The hug I got from this particular patient would probably not be the response.
Experiences like these are what give that perspective. That patient was simply grateful to get the help he needed. When I’m stressed about traffic or whatever other mundane problems I have in my life, they simply don’t compare to a person who truly has no access to the care that they need. Being able to be a part of that care in a meaningful way is a truly humbling experience. I have been on other humanitarian trips in the past, and have always wanted to continue them in my career. The fact that PDS holds similar values is one of the main reasons I choose to continue our partnership. After all is said and done, I say sign me up for the next trip.

DRIVING FOR IMPACT: THE SMILE GENERATION® GOLF CLASSIC
By Kyle Guerin, Sr. Manager, We Serve
On Sunday, October 2, over 100 golfers participated in the 4th annual Smile Generation Golf Classic, a charity event benefiting the Pacific Dental Services® Foundation. Having spent previous years in Dallas and San Antonio, it was time to give Houston a chance to host this Texas-sized tournament.
The event took place at the Wildcat Golf Club, a challenging course with rolling hills, plenty of water and beautiful views of NRG stadium (home of the Houston Texans) and downtown Houston. It was a best ball scramble, allowing the best of golfers to play alongside those with a heart to serve and support. Teams were made up of supported owner dentists, PDS® regional partners and supported office team members, strategic vendor partners, and friends and family. It was a rewarding day raising funds for a great cause. Thank you to all of our sponsors. Without you, we could not have made this happen.

Sirona – inCoris TZI C – CEREC® Blocks:
Learn about the new inCoris Blocks and Sirona® SpeedFire.

In October of 2016, PDS ® -supported dentists began testing in-office use of the Sirona inCoris zirconia blocks at five different locations. The inCoris blocks have been available for quite some time in the dental labs, but will now be available for same-day use in dental offices. In the past, lab sintering time was eight hours or more, which of course negated any chance to reasonably perform same-day CEREC restorations with inCoris zirconia materials.
The inCoris block does require the new Sirona SpeedFire oven in order to sinter in the office. The blocks are initially softer than the other blocks milled in PDSsupported offices, but once sintered, they approach three times the strength of e.max ® blocks, coming in at over 900 MegaPascals (MPa). There are bridge block choices as well as implant block choices. Currently, the SpeedFire only sinters zirconia, but it is expected that many other block materials will be compatible with the SpeedFire oven soon. These restorations can be cemented with traditional cements such as Fuji and Ketac. The current pricing is comparable to other blocks, but they are packaged with only three blocks per sleeve.
The new MCXL in-office mills that will soon be available have a wet/dry option for milling, and zirconia blocks can be milled dry due to their pre-sinter softness. These blocks can be milled with either diamonds or carbide burs. The current MCXL mills in PDS-supported offices can mill these blocks, as well, but while using water. When milling the zirconia blocks with water, an additional 10 minutes of oven time is required to first dry out the blocks. Total sintering time for a dry zirconia inCoris restoration approximates the time to bake an e.max restoration at about 12 to 15 minutes. The time to glaze is roughly seven minutes, or they can be hand-polished.
When using the inCoris block in-office within the CEREC v4.4.1 update, you need to enter the barcode number off the block into the software for proper sintering of the material. The oven will show up as a connected device in the CEREC software.
For doctors that have always been cautious about the CEREC strength, this is your solution. In fact, this alternative choice to complete same-day, in-office

PASS 2016 PEDIATRIC DENTAL BOARDS!
Congratulations to the PDS-supported pediatric dentists who recently passed their Pediatric Dental Boards. This is a very special accomplishment with a very rigorous examination process. Not all pediatric dentists are certified by the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry (ABPD)—only dentists who have completed a residency in pediatric dentistry can sit for the board certification exams. The ABPD certifies pediatric dentists based on the standards of excellence that lead to high quality oral health care for infants, children, adolescents and patients with special health care needs, validating the knowledge, skills, and experience requisite to the delivery of quality patient care.

PDS INSTITUTE® UPDATE
By Kate Lawford, Clinician Development Specialist & Lacey Schicker, Program Manager, PDS Institute
NEW FACULTY
In June, 11 contenders presented on 13 disciplines before a panel, including Lois Banta, Dr. Sonny Chokka, Ken Davis, and Kimberly Brozovich at the PDS Institute Faculty interview event. Three new faculty members were selected to develop four STM tracks for 2017. We are excited to add their expertise and contributions to our growing pool of clinical offerings.

Dr. Adam Burr
Simple Diagnosis, Prevention & Caries Management
Dr. Burr hails from Colorado Springs, and has been a PDS ® -supported clinician since 2012. His passion for preventative dentistry will directly impact our ultimate goal: healthier, happier patients.
COURSE CATALOG
The 2017 Course Catalog features over 530 hours of continuing education, a new ICE>WTR>STM program for hygiene, and further additions to the Pathway to Ownership offerings.
The primary goal at the Institute is to help clinicians achieve clinical excellence, which is defined as “exceptional outcomes and experiences for healthier, happier patients.” All students of the PDS Institute qualify for participation in paths for Fellowship, Mastery and Diplomat Honors. These paths recognize clinicians who are leaders in their field through a commitment to their professional development.

Dr. Cynthia Blendermann-Perone
Oral Pathology | Medical Emergencies
Dr. Blendermann-Perone has been a PDS-supported clinician since 2014, and practices in Colorado Springs. With a background in intensive care nursing, she brings a wealth of knowledge to the faculty team.

Dr. Cody Mugleston
New Owner Dentist Development
A PDS-supported clinician since 2011, Dr. Mugleston owns multiple offices in the greater Las Vegas area. His teaching in New Owner meetings forms the foundation for his strong addition to the faculty lineup.
ASPIRE

The Institute also proudly welcomes its first adjunct faculty member, Dr. Peter Hagen. Dr. Hagen has been a trusted colleague with PDS and PDS-supported dentists for many years. His delivery of CEREC ® Basics content during ICE orientation week is critical to success in ramping new associates, and is just the beginning of his contributions. As the PDS Institute continues to advance, we will offer adjunct and external SME opportunities to a limited number of external key opinion leaders. Much like PDS-supported faculty members, adjunct faculty will instruct, create and leverage content for all PDS-supported clinicians.
In October of this year, 23 faculty members, board chairs and advisors came together to strategize for another great year in 2017. The two-day event included exploring how faculty members can have an even greater impact organization-wide, setting goals for expanding our already formidable 530+ hours of available continuing education, and rapidfire discussions for scaling and leveraging the platform and educational offerings for all PDS-supported clinicians.

Dr. Scott Keys was honored as the 2016 Outstanding Faculty Member of the year. He accomplished great things this year, including delivery of two STM tracks in five regions, presentations at XP 2016, publishing an article in Inside Dentistry and serving as an R3 Summit team member for Prevention Magazine
Congratulations, Dr. Keys!

CAMBRA: LEAVING BEHIND THE STONE AGE
This is an abbreviated version of the article published in the December 2016 issue of Dental Economics
In Figure 1, a beautiful ex-situ specimen is shown of a tooth demonstrating carious excavation. The execution of decay removal isn’t perfect by any means, but an honest attempt was made by the operator to excavate decay and conserve natural tooth structure. Why isn’t this preparation better? Was the operator poorly trained, rushed or lacking the right equipment? As it turns out, this cavity preparation was done 14,000 years ago1!
It is disturbing to realize that as a profession we haven’t meaningfully moved our initial treatment modalities beyond apparently Paleolithic techniques. Caries Management by Risk Assessment (CAMBRA) is the first sustained, albeit historically nascent, methodical treatment modality intended to identify risk, intercept inception and reverse the seemingly inevitable removal of tooth structure2
What It Is and What It Isn’t
CAMBRA is a treatment philosophy wherein a patient's risk for developing carious dental disease is diagnosed. This is usually done through the use of a simple questionnaire called a Caries Risk Assessment (CRA)2 Based on the risk category and the individual risk factors, a customized risk reduction plan is put into place. The ultimate goal of this treatment plan is to modify patient behaviors and to mitigate biological and physiological propensities that lead to carious dental disease.
CAMBRA is not a silver bullet. Successful implementation will not endanger our profession due to a lack of operative dentistry. We won’t choose the perfect treatment plan for every patient, periodontal disease will persist, some patients will fail to comply, recurrent decay will still develop, existing dentistry will fail, and traumatic occlusion will continue to force restorative intervention. We will, however, prevent disease in our patients.
The Benefits
codes that are directly related to the CAMBRA approach3. The majority of these codes are non-covered benefits. In a fee-for-service practice, these codes should only expand the scope of practice. In a practice that relies on third-party payers, uncovered codes are a boon to overcoming the financial strain experienced by patients with some of the most common procedures we perform. Noncovered codes allow us to set a reasonable and customary fee for the procedure.
Implementation
The science behind CAMBRA and the proof of its success is indisputable4,5,6. Implementation on a widespread scale, however, is generally lacking based on the initial training and investment required. After these logistics are covered, the real hurdle is discussing this with our patients. The following questions may be extremely powerful in determining whether a patient is a good candidate for CAMBRA:
• Are you interested in preventing cavities for you and/or your children?
• The treatment recommendations are highly effective at preventing cavities, but are generally not covered by dental insurance.
• Are you still interested in learning more about this approach to prevent cavities?
The CAMBRA era can become our reality wherein dentistry is practiced. Reactionary Paleolithic protocols can be updated to truly proactive treatment modalities. Practices that implement modern, patient-oriented modalities have the upper hand in becoming the practice of choice in the market they serve. Additionally, providers that show a true concern for the well-being of their patients win trust, and trust leads to more dentistry.

Ethically, CAMBRA is the most beneficial treatment paradigm for our patients. The correct way to care for our patients is to push both the initiation and the intervals of the restorative cycle as far as possible. This will result in fewer surgical interventions and predictably lead to healthier patients. Communicating this to our patients will garnish their respect and appreciation.
Financially, an intentional change in our approach to treating dental caries and implementing CAMBRA can be rewarding. Currently, there are nearly 20 rarely used

The new code, D4346, was adopted by the code committee to fill the gap between D1110 prophylaxis and D4341 or D4342 scaling and root planing.
Before explaining the parameters of this new code, it is important to fully understand some basic periodontal concepts that underlie all CDT codes relative to the management of periodontal health and/or periodontal diseases.
PERIODONTAL BEST PRACTICES
Accurately performing a full mouth periodontal pocket charting on all adult patients who are new to the practice ensures you have baseline data, and then once a year thereafter will assist the dentist in the diagnosis, treatment plan and continuing care regimen to ensure the patient’s long term periodontal health.
Remember, there are three reasons why periodontal pocket depth increases:
• Migration of the gingival margin in a coronal direction due to tissue swelling; this results in pseudo-pocketing and is considered to be gingivitis.
• Migration of the base of the pocket or gingival attachment in an apical direction; this results in clinical attachment loss and is referred to as periodontitis.
• Migration of the periodontal tissues both coronally and apically.

GINGIVITIS
Gingivitis or pseudo-pocketing occurs when there is gingival swelling due to inflammation or infection. With pseudo-pocketing, the base of the pocket or soft tissue attachment is intact and located coronal to the CEJ and the alveolar crest. There is no evidence of bone loss. Key to the diagnosis of gingivitis is pocket depth and the prevalence of bleeding on probing.
PERIODONTITIS
Periodontitis is diagnosed when the base of the pocket migrates apically and bone loss is present. Increased pocket depth, bleeding on probing and radiographic evidence of bone loss, are generally accepted for the diagnosis of periodontitis.
CALCULUS
While the presence of sub-gingival calculus is an important clinical sign, it does not automatically trigger scaling and root planing. In patients with moderate to severe gingivitis, you will often see sub-gingival calculus located beneath the gingival crest and above the CEJ. Keep in mind, without bone loss you will not access the root surfaces of the teeth.
NEW CDT CODE FOR 2017
D4346 - Scaling in presence of generalized moderate or severe gingival inflammation –full mouth, after oral evaluation
This code is further defined as the removal of plaque, calculus and stains from supraand sub-gingival tooth surfaces when there is generalized moderate or severe gingival inflammation in the absence of periodontitis. It is indicated for patients who have swollen, inflamed gingiva, generalized suprabony pockets, and moderate to severe bleeding on probing. This code is not reported in conjunction with prophylaxis, scaling and root planing, or debridement procedures.
Don’t be fooled!
Proper treatment for periodontitis is imperative for our patient’s oral and overall health. Insurance companies are looking closer at the required documentation in order to reimburse for scaling and root planing procedures. If the required documentation is not present, including the full mouth probe with bleeding points, radiographs with evidence of bone loss and intra-oral photos, it is the author’s opinion that the SRP codes may be downgraded by the insurance companies to the lesser D4346 code. Appropriate documentation, along with a detailed narrative stating the

diagnosis (type 2 or type 3 perio, etc.) and defining type and location of bone loss, is imperative to ensure the patient receives proper benefit for the treatment provided.
COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
What is the difference between the new scaling procedure (D4346) and the current debridement procedure (D4355)?
D4355 is performed prior to a comprehensive exam. It is performed when there is so much plaque and calculus present that the dentist is unable to perform a comprehensive exam. It cannot be reported on the same day as a comprehensive exam and it is considered a once-in-a-lifetime benefit. D4346 is performed following a comprehensive exam and can be done the same day as the comprehensive exam.
How long after the D4346 can a patient return to a regular cleaning D1110?
There is no defined waiting period. Based on the patient’s individual needs, the dentist determines when the patient can resume a regular preventive care program that includes oral prophylaxis.
D4346 is a full mouth procedure; does this mean that it is completed in a single day? This procedure is considered to be full mouth and is expected to be completed on a single date of service.

A GROWING BODY OF RESEARCH SHOWS THAT COUNTING YOUR BLESSINGS CAN NOT ONLY BRING YOU JOY BUT ALSO IMPROVE YOUR PHYSICAL HEALTH. THIS IS ONE TURKEY DAY TRADITION YOU’LL WANT TO KEEP YEAR ROUND.
By Jennifer King Lindley
FAMILY, FRIENDS, GOOD FOOD, a home, the kindness of others: These are the things we acknowledge around the Thanksgiving table—or, sometimes, after everyone’s gone home and the dishes are done and we can also be grateful for a coffee table to put our feet on. We know, inherently, that it’s a good thing to take stock of what’s going right in our world— and now scientists are saying that doing so can boost our physical health as much as our mental state or relationships.
Studies have linked living a thankful life to fewer aches and pains, better sleep, and more. “Making gratitude a daily practice is like giving yourself a vitamin,” says David DeSteno, Ph.D., a professor of psychology
at Northeastern University in Boston and author of the forthcoming book Emotional Success. He’s not being hyperbolic: He means it’s like an actual vitamin, making your body work better. And the deep, long lasting power of gratitude is blissfully simple to harness.
It helps to know that when experts talk about gratitude, they mean more than saying thank you, the way you’ve been taught since you were old enough to speak. “Gratitude is affirming the goodness in one’s life and recognizing that its source lies outside the self,” says Robert Emmons, Ph.D., a professor of psychology at the University of California, Davis, and author of The Little Book.
ARE YOUR RELATIONSHIPS DRIFTING?
By Doug Fields, PDS® Director of Strengthening Relationships

This last year we’ve experienced three different PDS Relationship Experiences with some fabulous PDS couples. They have been a great time of laughter, learning, escape and connection. In all of these experiences, there’s been a common theme that has appeared when evaluating relationships: relationships experience a natural drift.
Here’s what’s tricky—the drift sneaks up on couples. It appears as a slow, gradual movement that pulls couples from one another and can move them from their intended target of health. At first, the drift doesn’t seem like it’s even happening … it’s so very deceptive. Couples go about their daily, ordinary life, get busy and preoccupied, and when they have a wakeup call (i.e. crisis), or a relational blow-up, they look at one another and notice their relationship has drifted off course. It’s so common and happens so naturally.
As a lifelong Southern California resident, I’ve had the privilege of growing up around the beach. More times than I can recall, I’ve gone into the ocean to cool off or play or ride a wave, and before I know it, the undercurrent has shifted me down the beach. If you have never experienced this before, it might be hard to imagine, but it’s true for anyone who enters the sea. The drift isn’t biased to race, religion, weight, health, socio-economic stature … if you’re in the Pacific Ocean, you will drift from where you started.
Let’s create a scenario around the drift—imagine that your relationship is a boat—you can choose the style (sail,
motor, row, speed, tug … it doesn’t matter). Your relational boat is pointed toward an intended destination—let’s pretend you’re planning to sail to the island of your dreams. This is the location you intended to reach when you first thought of the idea of being in a relationship with your partner. To get there, you’d chart out a course and give yourself 50 years until you arrive (50 years is a standard amazing anniversary number). Now imagine that as you set out on your journey, you are just one degree off course. One degree doesn’t seem very much, but over a long period of time you would totally miss your destination and potentially shipwreck your relationship. One degree off seems like nothing … until it impacts your relationship.
Every significant relationship needs to be aware of the reality of both the undercurrent and getting off course by a degree or two. Healthy relationships pay special attention to their intended destination so they don’t miss it. This requires intentionality. Some of the most intelligent people I know forget to give attention to their relationships and they wind up drifting off course and crashing. Too many couples experience this very real drift and then look up one day to discover they’re lost and have wrecked on the island of hopelessness. What began as a wonderful journey slowly drifted off course because misguided desires took their focus off their future and they weren’t wise or courageous enough to make the needed changes. I don’t want that to happen to you!
DATE YOUR MATE
We just wrapped our 3 rd Date Your Mate contest (the winner will be highlighted in the February 2017 issue). We’ve literally seen over a thousand dates posted— and more coming. Keep your relationship fresh and alive by Dating Your Mate … and you might be a winner too. Here are a few date pictures from our current contest!

In nautical or aviation terms, needed adjustments are referred to as course corrections. I remember hearing an astronaut describe space travel, “Our people at NASA are in control of our flights about 3% of the time, and 97% of the time we [astronauts] are just doing course corrections.” That is such a strong parallel statement that applies to significant relationships. Course corrections are needed to ensure you’ll reach your relational target. Your relationship journey has the potential to be “out of this world” (think of the rush and views from space), but it also has the potential to crash if you’re not willing to choose the thousands of small (and occasional large) “course corrections” along the way.
As you prepare for a new year, consider some of the course corrections that may need to be made in your own life. Don’t be thinking of all the changes your partner needs to make—you can’t control those. What are the course corrections that you know you can make that will minimize the drift? Make a list of two or three and begin to focus on those and you’ll be amazed at how a little attention can net big relational results.

At PDS®, what is valued is described in our We Believes and Therefores. The beauty of PDS’ values is that they are unique to us. They are extraordinarily special because of that. Look on any number of corporate websites and you will find companies that proclaim the following values over and over: excellence, quality, fun, respect, fairness … they are predictable. If one is able to tell you what your values are and they don’t even know you, there is a problem. PDS’ We Believes come from the heart and, therefore, are personal to us. There is enormous power in that. Here is why.
Behavior is shaped and driven by what is valued. The problem with most corporate values is that they describe ideals rather than reflect reality. That is why they are so common. At PDS, our values are specifically tailored to the reality of our business. They recognize that creating healthier, happier patients is a human endeavor. Companies of all kinds around the world, including PDS—and even some of our competitors—have invested in the best of technology. This means that everyone has super-intelligent machines that can out-think any employee. PDS understands that technology has leveled the playing field somewhat. What companies do can be copied, imitated and reverse engineered. Where PDS can sustain competitive advantage is not only in what we do, but also in how we do it. How we do what we do is distinguished by unique human qualities that cannot be replicated. It is these human qualities expressed in terms of behavior that can help us maintain strategic differentiation. We can literally out-behave the competition. How we behave is described in our values.

Valuing our values and truly understanding what they mean in terms of behavior also has the benefit of helping us perpetuate our culture of ethics and compliance. One of our Therefores says, “We are not big on rules and regulations.” Given that, the question becomes how to best maintain compliance and a commitment to ethics in the heavily-regulated healthcare environment without an overreliance on rules. There is a paradox to rules. The more there are, the more resentment they create and the more people seek a way around them. Allowing people to self-govern is a more authentic and organic way to maintain compliance. The best way to orient people to selfgovernance is to create universal alignment around a commonly held, deeply-rooted set of values. Consistently living our values provides the “true north” that allows people to self-govern.
The beauty of our values is that they are inspirational. Inspiration comes from within. It happens in you. People can be coerced into certain behavior with threats of punishment, or a “carrot and stick” approach can be used. Reward a little and punish a little. The problem with these approaches is they rely on external forces. Things imposed on you. Things that happen to you rather than inside you. The PDS We Believes and Therefores
are designed to inspire. In order to tap into this enormous power, we must internalize what they mean, relate them to desired behavior and then demonstrate that behavior every time. We must help each other bring our values to life by developing a common understanding of desired behaviors. We must hold each other accountable to them.
PDS has committed to this. Over the past year, people from all across the company, at every level have contributed to identifying desired behaviors that correlate to our values— what We Believe. In the coming months, you will start to see these behaviors formalized and memorialized so that we all can live them together. Some of these behaviors include owning our own attitudes and actions, taking initiative to do what is needed, making decisions with both purpose and profit in mind and holding each other accountable to extraordinary performance. There are a number of others as well. If we are able to manifest these things consistently, our values will become a powerful tool to help achieve our purpose of creating healthier, happier patients—and that is the real value in our values.
