100 WE LLS FOR ETHIOPIA

Dear PDS Teammates,
At this year’s XP, we detailed out what GREATNESS will look like for the future of PDS.
We clearly articulated our vision of PDS’ future, what the organization is going to look and feel like in 10 years... We will be an organization with at least 16 clearly established regions, with dense networks of offices.
We will be in most major metropolitan areas of the U.S. PDS-supported dentists will be known for their Clinical Excellence and comprehensive care, meaning they are helping to restore more of their patients’ mouths to optimum oral health than any other large-group practice. Approximately 50% of all patient care is currently delivered by our awesome specialists; in 10 more years that number could be as high as 75%!
Is patient retention so strong that same-practice growth is no longer
our #1 strategic imperative? NO! The biggest challenge we will face in the dental office operations is something much more basic – appointment availability – a very good problem to have!
Our #1 strategic imperative will be supporting Clinical Excellence in everything we do. PDS will be the best dentist support organization in the U.S., recognized by all major dental organizations as the leader in our space. Since all supported offices will be growing, sustained profitable partner growth will be part of our culture. We will be able to choose the best people to join us because our systems and our reputation are so strong, and we live out our WE BELIEVES EVERY DAY, EVERY HOUR.
"Our #1 strategic imperative will be supporting Clinical Excellence in everything we do."
The effectiveness of the Regional and National Support teams gets better every year, creating easier
systems that help solve more problems closer and closer to patients. We will have our ups and downs any given day or week, but the result of staying focused on this Vision is that this organization will be something we are all very, very proud of – an organization where millions of patients get exceptional care from INSPIRED PROFESSIONALS serving together, a fully integrated oral health system where patients can expect the same high level of comprehensive care anywhere they go in the U.S.!
To our future,
Stephen Thorne IV, President

Life is a challenge, no question. Greatness begins with humble beginnings and determination. Greatness is a choice, and on May 3 and 4 at the JW Marriott LA Live in Los Angeles, 1,500 of the dental industry’s finest chose greatness.
by Kyle Guerin "We Serve" Manager
with our XP Awards. We honored 100 XP Award winners. Out of those top 100, we awarded 25 Platinum Awards, 8 Diamond Awards, and one majestic Award of Distinction, which went to Dr. John Nosti.
As is tradition, President Steve Thorne kicked off the morning with a challenging message. He told us that greatness is all around us, and that greatness comes with risk, and noted that as the PDS ® family, we’re all on this journey toward greatness together.
Next up was best-selling author Shawn Achor. Shawn shared with us the Happiness Advantage, a way to reap the benefits of a happier and more positive mindset to achieve the extraordinary in our work and in our lives.
Following Shawn, Steve launched into a fascinating lecture on the history of dentistry, but it soon turned into utter chaos when the owner dentists hijacked XP and broke into a Harlem Shake.
Once the lights came back on and some normalcy resumed, dramatist Nicole Johnson shared with us the Invisible Woman, a tribute to hardworking women everywhere who feel so unseen in their daily lives.
Following Nicole, Steve came back out and reminded us that we are in a position to take hold of a better future in Clinical Excellence. We can choose greatness because of our values, our experience and our knowledge. We can choose greatness because we have been prepared, and we have been tested.
After Steve, it was time for a little magic: or 6’9" NBA legend and business entrepreneur Earvin “Magic” Johnson. As Magic took the stage, cell phone cameras came out in full force. In 10 years of XP conferences, there has never been such excitement. Magic shared his own story of choosing greatness at every step of his journey – from being a poor kid growing up in Lansing, Mich., to becoming National Champion at Michigan State University, to being an NBA champion with the Los Angeles Lakers and ultimately the successful business owner he is today. As he told his stories of greatness, he stopped along the way to take pictures and flashed that electric smile to the crowd.
After his speech and a little Q&A, it was time to bring out a hoop and a ball and pit the Magic Man against our own Dr. J. Walter Jefferson in a 3-shot shootout. Dr. Carolyn Ghazal played referee, and although Dr. J. performed admirably, Magic didn’t miss and was once again the champion.
That was the end of the general session, and the afternoon was filled with regional events, such as a basketball game between the Desert Mountain region and the Pacific South Coast region and a bowling event held by the Southwest CA region, to name a few.
After a few hours of free time for the attendees (and a mad dash for the XP team), the ballroom was transformed. We kicked off our 100 Wells for Ethiopia campaign with charity: water and celebrated with a concert by Mat Kearney. To read more about the 100 Wells for Ethiopia night, check out the story on page 5!
This year’s XP was unlike any other. It was an incredible weekend, with the PDS ® family choosing greatness. It’s sad that we will be saying goodbye to all of our friends at the JW Marriott LA Live, which has been our XP home for the last three years, but we’ll be saying hello to all new friends next year at the Anaheim Hilton when we celebrate our 20-year anniversary. I can’t wait!

At the JW Marriott LA Live on the evening of May 4, Pacific Dental Services®, The Smile Generation®, and charity: water officially kicked off the much-anticipated 100 Wells for Ethiopia campaign with a bang. The premise is to raise a million dollars and fund 100 water wells for the people in the Tigray region of Ethiopia.
Attendees of the charity event were greeted with the symbolic jerry cans throughout the hotel. There were even a couple of photo opportunities where people could take a group shot with the cans. Attendees were encouraged to see exactly how heavy it is to carry those filled jerry cans around our makeshift waterwalk. For every time around the course, PDS® donated $50 toward the project.
The event started with encouraging remarks from President Steve Thorne on why we’ve created this opportunity for teams to engage in the act of service. Following Steve was the debut of legendary documentary filmmaker Taylor Steele’s short film 100 Wells for Ethiopia, which chronicled how water
by Kyle Guerin
changes everything. Following the film, charity: water Founder Scott Harrison motivated and inspired the audience on the incredible need for water in that region.
After Scott, it was time to get the contributions started. Marketing Director Matt Hall and I welcomed people on the stage to get involved and commit their teams to serving the people of Ethiopia by raising the funds for a well. The event culminated with an amazing concert performed by toprecording artist Mat Kearney. People danced the night away as they banged rhythmic African beats using the jerry cans.
Since the event, the organization has rallied to commit to over 220 projects and has raised over $200,000 toward this worthwhile cause. It’s a great start on our way to the million dollar goal. The campaign runs through the end of the year.

There has always been a sense that if we used our CEREC ® CAD/CAM machine more we could expect a reduction in the costs associated with the office.
The volume of use by the CEREC CAD/CAM machine is clearly tied to the costs identified in the Profit and Loss statements of the office. The most direct way to evaluate this impact is by looking at the Lab & Supply costs.
Now that CEREC CAD/CAM has been used by PDS ®-supported offices for several years, we are able to do a collective analysis of ALL the dental offices supported within the PDS system. The number of CEREC CAD/CAM machines has increased from only 63 in 2007 to up to 296 machines in 2012. Even more impressive, the number of actual CEREC CAD/CAM procedures by PDS-supported offices has skyrocketed from fewer than 10,000 in 2007 to almost 150,000 in 2012, with a projection of over 175,000 units for 2013.
As seen in the graph, there has been a dramatic decrease tied to Lab & Supply expense over the course of those same six years. From a starting point of 12.63% in 2007, Lab & Supply expenses have dropped down to only 8.50% in 2012.
This is the average of ALL PDS-supported offices for 2012 - over a 4% decrease in Lab & Supply on average per office. Very impressive.
What does a 4% decrease in Lab & Supply costs equate to in actual dollars for the office? If an office is producing $100,000 per month, this is a $ 4,000 impact - per month! That’s almost $ 50,000 per year! For an office producing $ 200,000 per month, the positive impact approaches $100,000 per year! Those are pretty dramatic and significant dollar amounts.
These decreases in costs are tied to several different items:
• Block costs vs. lab costs
• No impression material costs - one of the higher ticket items for the traditional lab-based crown process
• Fewer tray covers, bib covers, anesthetic, sterilization bags, etc. (all the chairside consumables)
• Less required chair time for patient delivery, second visit appointment
• Potentially the most valuable (and not even included in these calculations) – The freeing up for the dentist to provide other services, instead of having to deliver a crown for the patient on a separate visit
It can sometimes be difficult to illustrate a specific and direct correlation between two variables, but it is clear that substantial decreases in expenses exist when the CEREC CAD/CAM machine is used more frequently. The reasons behind this are multiple, and not just tied to reduced lab costs or reduced purchases of impression materials. This suggests irrefutable evidence that increased use of the CEREC CAD/CAM machine is directly tied to a significant reduction in the Lab & Supply costs for the dental facility.
Dr. Werner Mörman first conceived CEREC ® technology in early 1980. It took until Sept. 19, 1985 for the first CEREC CAD/CAM inlay to be placed at the University of Zurich.
Fortunately for all of us, progress has advanced at an ever-quickening pace. This past March, PDS ® attended the International Dental Show (IDS) conference in Germany to see where we are today and what else is on the horizon.
The IDS is HUGE! If you are used to the CDA, multiply by a factor of 10 and the Chicago Mid-Winter by five! It is so big that it is only held every two years. Basically, if a manufacturer wants to succeed in the dental space, they attend the IDS. It provided an unprecedented opportunity to study and compare equipment, confirm a few assumptions and get a glimpse at new and coming dental advances.
We also toured both the Ivoclar® and Sirona facilities. Sirona (located in Bensheim) was clean, efficient and modern; it was much as I had remembered it from the past. Every type of dental equipment was on display while being manufactured. Ivoclar (located in Lichtenstein) was equally clean, efficient and modern and set in a prototypical glacial valley. We were given several high-quality material demonstrations, e.g., “how to make composite”, which gave insight into controlling material physical properties. We were also led past several laboratories that were “offlimits” – likely creating the materials we will all use in coming years.
MY BIGGEST TAKE AWAYS WERE:
1. We are aligned with the best dental companies in the world – Ivoclar and Sirona.
2. Implant efficiency is about to get way easier and better at the office level.
3. I can’t wait to mill my own e.max abutments and surgical guides!
4. The PDS model is ideally suited to incorporate most of these changes.
5. I need a Schick 33 sensor ASAP.
6. I will be using the new Ivoclar varnish when available in the U.S. market.
MY BIGGEST SURPRISES:
1. E4D ® didn’t show up, and Henry Schein ® Europe had to use CEREC CAD/CAM units in its booth.
2. The Vita Enamic ® is not just a composite block, but a whole different material category.
3. 3M™’s data capture is awesome, but it still needs to go to a lab, and 3M has no plans to generate a solution.
4. iTero ® has amazing data capture too, but is still like wielding a large revolver. Like 3M, the information must still flow to a lab.
It was a great trip, and I would like to thank my PDS team. It was fun hanging out with all of you! Thank you to the CEREC CAD/CAM doctors for their warmth and companionship on much of the trip, and to Sirona for all their great work and support through the years. And a special thanks to our hosts from team Ivoclar, Don, John and Chet.
Lastly, I would like to extend a very special thank you to Dr. Mörman. It was singularly appropriate that we ended our journey in Zurich, the birth place of digital dentistry. We wish Dr. Mörman a long and happy retirement.
Do you have a strong periodontal maintenance program in your office?
by Jan LeBeau Chair, Clinical Director of Dental Hygiene
by Sheila Parkinson Director of Strategic Business Development, Orthodontics
Periodontal maintenance is one of those procedures that always brings up questions and differing opinions. Much of that is due to the conflict between the CDT definition of periodontal maintenance, which states that patients with gum (periodontal) disease should stay on periodontal maintenance for life, and the insurance industry’s pushback on lifetime support for this service. There are a few challenges we need to overcome when discussing a periodontal maintenance program with our patients and creating Patients for Life.
First, ask yourself:
1. Do I believe the treatment and maintenance of periodontal disease is necessary to achieving and maintaining overall health and well-being?
2. Do I believe that periodontal disease is an active infection with systemic ramifications?
3. Do I believe that periodontal maintenance is necessary to keep the progression of the disease in remission?
4. Have I performed a prophy in the presence of disease because I felt the patient would not accept my explanation of an active infection?
5. Do I believe there is value in creating Patients for Life?
All of us have struggled at one time or another with the above questions. Here are a few strategies to help you increase the value of your periodontal maintenance program and create healthy Patients for Life:
1. Believe in what you do. If you don’t truly believe that the treatment you are recommending is the best treatment for that patient, they won’t believe it either. Connect your treatment plan with the patient’s chief concern and chief disability. Present your treatment plan with confidence. Empower the patient with the necessary information so he/ she can make an educated decision about his/her treatment.
2. Know the science. If you’re not sure what you believe about periodontal disease, dig into the literature. Learn more about the oral systemic link. A three-month continuing-care interval to manage periodontal disease is not an arbitrary number made up by the hygiene association. It is based on classic studies and the AAP statement on the benefits of frequent maintenance intervals. Learn about the new research around bacteria and biofilm. Access the AAP website or look through the trade journals. Many of these journals are free online.
3. Educate early. When you first recommend SRP to a patient, include the fact that long-term success includes frequent periodontal maintenance continuing care and his/her participation in home care. Don’t let periodontal maintenance appointments and the cost be a surprise to the patient. Remind the patient as you complete the SRP, and schedule his/her first periodontal maintenance appointment before the SRPs are complete.
4. Make it different. Always do a complete FMP, including BOP, recession and mobility, at every periodontal maintenance appointment. Periodontal maintenance is different than a prophy, and the patient must see the difference. Perception is reality. If the patient does not perceive a difference, then he/she will not see the value.
5. Consider adjunct therapies. The definition of periodontal maintenance includes the isolated treatment of recurrent periodontal disease. Perhaps a laser is necessary to control this isolated breakdown. Consider the use of fluoride for root sensitivity and class IV decay. Differentiate the procedure from the prophy.
6. Make sure the patients get what they pay for. You cannot deliver thorough periodontal maintenance and create value by performing a periodontal maintenance in 20 minutes. Schedule the appropriate time to complete the necessary treatment to the best of your ability. The patient will see the value of the service you deliver - the value of the time spent - and will return as a Patient for Life.
A strong continuing-care program is essential for the long-term growth of a dental practice. Create Patients for Life by educating and enrolling every patient with active periodontal disease into a periodontal maintenance program. Manage the periodontal health of your patients, and you will manage the overall health of your practice.
What is the difference between a highly successful orthodontist and one who struggles to grow his/her practice?
To help answer this question, I recently interviewed an orthodontist who managed to have an extremely successful year despite the tough economic times. When I asked him what his key to success was, he answered that in response to the changing climate, he had to reinvent a new strategy of acquiring patients. This prompted him to implement an internal marketing program with an intense focus on the patient experience. He reported that currently up to 60 percent of referrals are generated from “word of mouth”
Orthodontists often believe that being the best clinician in town is the key to building a successful practice. However, in today’s climate, providing excellent orthodontic care, although very important, clearly isn’t enough.
The industry itself is undergoing a change. A recent Journal of Clinical Orthodontics (JCO) study on practice dynamics reported that average case starts dropped from 220 in 2009 to 200 in 2011. This drop was the first decrease the industry had seen since the JCO started tracking this in 1983, and indicates the middle class is still struggling to get back on its feet.
Our own orthodontic program is in the midst of a rising cultural shift from delivering an empty transaction to creating a meaningful experience for our patients. Let's start by noting the fundamental difference between a "transaction" and an "experience". A "transaction" between a patient and a staff member can be just an exchange of money for services. This interaction is often unconscious. An "experience" creates an emotional connection that is meaningful. For this connection to take place, it should be customized for each patient.
Below are five tactics that are being utilized by top-performing orthodontists to bring the patient experience to life in their practices:
1. Care Calls – The orthodontists calls their patients who had difficult appointments, like a band/bond appointment. This is the #1 practice-building method used by orthodontists in private practice. (2011 JCO practice study)
2. Parent Thank You Note – When a child gets his/her braces off, the office provides the child with a thank you note to write to his/her parents.
3. Braces On/Braces Off Celebration – The orthodontic team celebrates this event with the patients, creating a fun and memorable experience.
4. Consult Thank You Note – The team sends a hand-written thank you note in which they remember something personal (like an upcoming sports event or birthday) to patients that had a consult.
5. Theme Days – The office celebrates theme days like Silly Hat Day, Valentine’s Day, or School Jersey Day. This allows the patients and team to have fun on the orthodontic day.
The journey to creating a patient experience program can start with small steps and grow over time. It's more important to find a patient experience strategy that is working for you than to hold onto a strategy that is not working. In doing so, one needs to be mindful of the operational structure into which they are trying to execute a meaningful patient experience.
What I know for sure is successful orthodontic practices are focused on not only delivering Clinical Excellence, but also on delivering a positive experience for their patients.
What steps are you taking to create a Perfect Patient Experience® with your orthodontic patients?

Sustaining a competitive edge in the dental industry requires successfully developing the leadership and talent necessary to drive the company forward. Organizations that treat the development of executives, management teams and employees as an integrated part of company strategy have a distinct advantage over those that do not actively manage talent development. O&TD’s mission is to sponsor, develop, plan, implement and oversee programs and processes that promote and enhance the professional development and working experience of all PDS-supported dentists and clinicians, as well as PDS professionals and employees.
Director, Den Asst Dev Hired: 04/28/1998
In order to fulfill our mission, O&TD has been organized into four areas:
The PDS Institute™ is a learning institution that houses all O&TD programs, clinical and nonclinical. The PDS Institute for Clinical Excellence provides the education and development for PDS-supported clinicians, while The PDS Institute Academies provides specialized learning for non-clinical team members.
Regional Talent Development works closely with the regional partners and owner dentists to provide tactical and specialized talent development in order to achieve strategic business goals.
Field Office Development works with regional trainers to provide front and back office support, as well as developing and implementing standards and best practices in all aspects of dental assisting.
Talent Management Systems ensures that the O&TD department effectively utilizes state-ofthe-art technology that facilitates all areas of talent development.
