Dear PDS® Teammates, Congratulations
With your energy and enthusiasm in December to help our supported clinicians’ patients get the care they needed (and use their oh-so-valuable dental benefits), PDS hit both top- and bottom-line targets a huge achievement for a company that prides itself on setting lofty goals for itself! However, 2012 was not simply a story about PDS. Rather, it was an aggregation of individual successes one office at a time; one supported clinician at a time; one deserving patient at a time. And great achievements we saw! With so many offices having breakout years, it would take me pages to list them all. Please know that your hard work has not gone unnoticed.
It is always interesting to me to see how teams respond AFTER they complete a major milestone or achieved an incredible goal. As I write this in early February, I am watching as you all continue to raise the bar. And just how high are you raising it? January 2013 was the first month in the history of PDS that saw our supported clinicians provide more than $50M in dental services to their patients. It is a testament to your diligence in facilitating the Perfect Patient Experience® (PPE®) and our supported clinicians’ pursuit of Clinical Excellence led, of course, by the owner dentists who day-in and day-out demonstrate “Clinicians Leading Clinicians”. I believe
it is the patients’ way of applauding for staying focused on being the best. Way to go!
Strategic Imperatives (Long-Term Drivers; Multi-Year)
1. Same Practice Growth
2. Best Team
3. Clinical Excellence
4. Patients for Life™
5. Profitable Partner Growth
6. Live the PDS “We Believes”
As we continue to grow, it becomes more and more important that we are all aligned around PDS’ long-term Strategic Imperatives. Our Strategic Imperatives are the critical drivers of the business in the coming years; these multi-year imperatives keep us focused on PDS’ long-term strategy while we manage the company yearto-year and day-to-day. The first and foremost PDS Strategic Imperative is SAME PRACTICE GROWTH. Same practice growth is the engine that drives our growth, focuses us on the office-tooffice execution of the business model, and ensures that we continue to fulfill our promise to each of our supported owner dentists. Continued same practice growth will be accomplished via our second and third imperatives, which are having the BEST TEAM in place, facilitating CLINICAL EXCELLENCE in a "Clinicians Leading Clinicians" environment. Our fourth imperative is to create PATIENTS FOR LIFE through the PPE, which helps us achieve our fifth imperative, PROFITABLE PARTNER GROWTH. And we accomplish all of this while we LIVE the PDS "WE BELIEVE" statements, our sixth imperative.
1. OM Success
2. Associate Success
3. Simplification
4. Hygiene Patient Retention
5. Continual Conversation (with each other internally and patients externally)
6. Culture of Compliance
7. PDS Brand Awareness
8. Orthodontics and Pediatrics Improvements
Our Strategic Priorities are the nearterm objectives we will work toward in 2013 that will ensure that we realize the long-term Strategic Imperatives in the coming years. Strategic Priorities will change from year to year and help us to prioritize the projects we will be working on during the course of the year. By clearly identifying and documenting our Strategic Imperatives and 2013 Strategic Priorities, we create alignment amongst the nearly 5,000 people working in the organization. As we grow, unity in vision and purpose becomes ever more critical to our success. Thank you for your continued support in helping us become The Greatest Dental Company in America.
Sincerely,
Stephen Thorne IV, President

CLINICAL DEVELOPMENT:
For great dentists, learning is a lifelong endeavor, which means education doesn’t stop after dental school. The PDS Institute provides broad-based continuing education taught by instructors who are experts in their field. The Introduction to Clinical Excellence Essentials (ICEE) Program was rolled out in 2012, and it is designed to help supported dentists turn each patient into Patients for Life™.
500,000
OWNER DENTIST DEVELOPMENT:
PDS partners with top-notch talent across the nation. Last year, 45 additional dentists became owner dentists, bringing the total of PDS-supported owner dentists to more than 160 clinicians. The number of associate dentists practicing at PDS-supported offices also grew to 454 clinicians. The numbers don’t lie. The benefits of PRIVATE PRACTICE +® is a clear driver in attracting top talent to these dentist-owned practices. PDS-supported dentists want to enjoy a work/life balance that isn’t available to them when practicing solo; they’re overachievers who wish to excel in their field.
PROFESSIONAL RECRUITING:
We exemplified the Clinicians Leading Clinicians model with PDS-supported dentists visiting 10 dental schools and participating in “Lunch and Learn” events with students. We ended 2012 with the strongest brand presence in PDS history.
PDS-SUPPORTED OWNER DENTISTS
Expansion into a new region, new PDS®-supported offices, and growth in specialties . . . these are just a few of the 2012 highlights from Operations Support.
PDS and our supported dentists opened up 46 offices in 2012! This included four new markets: Oregon and Utah opened early in the year, while Idaho and Missouri finished off the year by opening in December. Plans for 2013 include: opening more than 50 supported offices, the most in PDS history, and entering into two new regions, Washington state and Georgia.
SPECIALTIES:
PDS is the largest dental support organization that exclusively supports pediatric clinicians for pediatric dentistry. The pediatric support business continues to provide a huge growth opportunity with the 60th PDS-supported pediatric office opening last year. In 2012, total revenue from specialty constituted 42% of the organizational service mix.

We sat down with Regional Director Mike Butler and Operations Manager Kimberly Haag to learn more about the incredible year our supported office in Perris had. Functioning like a family and teamwork are just a few of the crucial elements that led them to be the Office of the Year.
Lori Olsen: What made 2012 such a successful year for Perris?
Mike Butler: There is a continued drive in this practice to be the best. This office has a long history of wanting to continue to beat itself, and that’s one of the biggest factors. I think that mostly comes from the leaders here. Dr. Pham and Kimberly always strive to do better than before.
Kimberly Haag: Every day I look at my team and I am amazed at how dedicated they are to each other and to the patients. We are open six days a week and many of them work every Saturday. They constantly sacrifice their time for patients. We talk about everything; we can laugh, we can argue, but we always come together to achieve our goals. I really do have the best team EVER.
LO: Describe the culture at Perris.
MB: I would say it’s very unique. It’s more of a family atmosphere as far as the way the team interacts with one another. That can be both positive and negative, as you know. There’s a lot of give and take. They do whatever they need to do to be successful. They rely on each other, and they know they can count on each other, but it’s never someone else’s fault, or that someone else needed to do something differently. Everyone takes responsibility and tries to be the best they can be and help the next person be better as well.
KH: My team is here for the patients and they work hard. Everyone always has a positive attitude and we never panic over our
schedules. This team effortlessly and genuinely takes care of the patients that the office is lucky enough to have today. Our affiliated doctors set the tone because they are very accommodating. They will never turn a patient away. They will start a root canal at 6:00 p.m. Their attitude and beliefs are contagious.
LO: What makes your doctors so special?
MB: Dr. Pham is one of a kind and very driven. It’s like great athletes: some people are born with it. But there has to be a willingness with those that are gifted to push themselves. Dr. Pham has continued to push himself.
KH: Dr. Pham is the case acceptance champion. Doing dentistry, getting a commitment from patients, coaching his associates, is like brushing his teeth. He is the most talented person I have ever met, and he is also VERY entertaining. Dr. Mercer is very easygoing and incredibly talented. He is self-motivated, sets his own outrageous goals, and has an impressive way of accomplishing them. He is quite a force, and even though he has been very successful thus far, the best is yet to come. Dr. Sohal is our newest addition and she fit in immediately. Her patients love her and the team is drawn to her. I promise you will be hearing this name quite a bit.
LO: What makes your office so special?
KH: We cry together, we laugh together, and we discuss big decisions. This is our family.
LO: How does your team exemplify the PPE ®?
MB: They treat everyone as an individual when they walk in
the door. There have been many times when I’ve been here and a patient will come in to drop off cookies or show the team a picture of their new granddaughter. They didn’t have an appointment; they just stopped by.
KH: The team has a natural way of focusing on the patients’ needs, and they always take the time to connect. There is never any cookie cutter dialogue here. They are very sincere.
LO: What is your number one focus?
MB: The biggest thing when you support an office that has been as successful as this one is trying to figure out, “What can we do next?” There’s no other affiliated office that has had the yearover-year growth and continued success like this one has had over the last five years. When you have high expectations, you have to think about what you can do to improve and what you can do differently.
KH: To make sure that the office’s patients are receiving the dentistry they need every single day.
LO: What advice do you have for other PDS-supported offices?
MB: You have to hire the right people, and you have to turn them loose. If it’s good for the patient, if it’s good for the office, and if it’s good for PDS, then it must be good. If it doesn’t look the same, walk the same or talk the same, but it’s meeting those criteria, then it works. I think we’ve got to let people be empowered and move forward.
KH: Good luck! We don’t share our secrets!
When the results came in that once again Dr. Minh Pham would be our Doctor in the Spotlight, for a brief second I considered just rolling out last year’s article and seeing if anyone noticed. I mean, this will be his fifth time in eight years. I thought we had exhausted all of our questions last year, but then I thought what would Dr. Pham do? So I rolled up my sleeves, put on my thinking cap, and came up with a whole new list of interview questions. Very few of them have anything to do with dentistry.
Kyle Guerin: What stirs up more emotion in you? The years you’re top doc or the years you’re not?
Minh Pham: Awards and recognition are nice and all, but it's a reflection of the team. So of course the top doc years stir up more emotion. Eh, who am I kidding? It's the years that I didn't get it. I just don't like to lose. At anything.
KG: What would I find in your refrigerator right now?
MP: Water... bottled waters. A lot of bottled waters: Arrowhead, Fiji, and Kirkland. So if anyone is coming over to visit they better have eaten before because I’m not feeding anyone. The reason for that is I gain weight very easily, so to control my cravings, I don’t keep any food in my fridge.
KG: Of all the awards you’ve won, which one is the sweetest?
MP: The sweetest award would be this year’s Office of the Year since I don't have to share it with Dr. Walter Jefferson and Fontana 2.
KG: If you could trade places with any other person for a week, famous or not, living or dead, real or fictional, with whom would you trade?
MP: Tennis Pro Rafael Nadal. I love tennis, and the lifestyle of being a jet-setting professional athlete doesn’t sound too bad either. Playing the sport you love for millions of dollars with tons of adoring fans – that would be FABULOUS. Unfortunately, the only thing I am good at is with a hand piece, and the last time I checked, there isn't a DPT (Dental Professional Tour).
KG: I understand you’ll be traveling to Ethiopia this September to go serve the people over there. What are your real motives? Is it the We Serve award?
MP: Gosh, Dr. Tanisha Jackson has that award on lock down. The real motives are that it’s hard to say no to Steve Thorne. You won't stop bugging me every chance you get about me serving. It’s on my bucket list to visit Africa. And I want to do some good. That’s the truth, and I am sticking to it.
KG: This year, you’re the Doctor in the Spotlight, your office won Office of the Year, and your region won Region of the Year. Can you turn water into wine?
MP: No. Nor do I want to. I am not a wine connoisseur. But if you had asked if I can turn water into Grey Goose, then you might be surprised at the answer.
KG: If Hollywood made a movie about your life, who would you like to see play the lead role as you? Would you rather that movie be a dramatic bio piece or more of a spoof like “Scary Movie 2”?
MP: Meryl Streep. I think she can play anyone and make it believable, including a high-strung, eccentric dentist from Perris, Calif. It would definitely be a dramatic bio. Meryl is the best at that.
KG: If someone wrote a biography about you, what do you think the title should be?
MP: “Minh B. Pham, DDS – Eh, No Big Whoop.”
KG: What makes you angry?
MP: Gosh it's a laundry list ... here are some of them: NOI below 30, lines/crowds/theme parks, clutter, “The Real Housewives” series of any kind, the Kardashians, 2012 USC's football team, 2010 shared Office of the Year award, war in the Middle East, California Tax Prop 30/32, etc.
KG: What’s your advice for a brand new doc still wet behind the ears?
MP: Here’s a tissue. Go dry yourself before you go see your next patient. Just kidding. There are too many things to teach a young doctor. So I’ll try to keep the message generic. I would say push yourself slightly beyond your comfort zone. Keep trying. Even if things go bad, learn from it, and don’t make the same mistakes twice.
KG: Who do you think is your biggest competition for this prestigious honor?
MP: Every year there is a handful of great doctors. Any of us could take it because we all do great GP dentistry and refer to our specialists. It takes both! I am assuming the biggest competition will be the usual suspects, but there are some great younger doctors that could have a break-out year and kick us all from our top perches. There are so many names that come to the top of my crazy head.
KG: Dr. Pham once again the pleasure has been all mine. It’s always nice to spend time with you, but I’ll be honest, I’m kind of pulling for someone else next year.
MP: Do what you must, but I’m already working to see you next year.
It’s clear that it was truly a remarkable year for the Southwest region. We spoke with Regional Partner Joanna Rodgers about the leadership and team unity that contributed to this amazing year.
Carol Thornton: What made 2012 such a successful year for your region?
Joanna Rodgers: We came together to simplify and define a few things our supported owner dentists wanted to go after. At the end of the day, it is the owner dentist that we serve. That is my job first and foremost. What do they want to go after? We were able to collectively unite the owner dentists and have the majority come out and say, ‘This is what is going to support our vision.’ The Southwest owner dentist vision states, ‘Excellence in clinical leadership utilizing modern dentistry, creating Patients for Life™.’ The owner dentists came together and identified their clinical imperatives for 2012. Very methodical, very intentful, and very focused on achieving the clinical imperatives that they set. That was probably the biggest shift: we became true partners. They realized that the industry is changing and in order to be successful, change is important.
CT: Describe the culture in your region.
JR: Jack Knudsen said it best during his 2012 Regional Manager of the Year acceptance speech when he thanked his managers for playing nice together. I thought about what he said, and I thought about the teams and their willingness to help and mentor outside of their environment. It really made a statement. They all want the region to succeed. The team always said yes when asked to help. I have never heard any one of my team members say no.
CT: Describe your style of leadership.
JR: I want to give my team the vision and the autonomy to go do great things within the structure of the organization. I think that what I have done well over the years is choosing great people for the region. I’m only as good as the people I surround myself with.
CT: What is your number one focus?
JR: My number one focus is having the PDS-supported offices be the ‘office of choice in their local markets’. I know that is a huge statement. It requires a seamless partnership with owner dentists and a vision for their practices. It means ensuring that the specialty regional managers and regional management team are aligned. It means that regional managers are choosing the best leaders as office managers. It means that through comprehensive dental care at those offices, the specialty regional managers are bridging the gap between GPs and specialists around communication and patient care. It includes the complexities of all the movements in the dental office – from front-office team, dental assistants, and lead assistant.
CT: What makes your supported doctors so special?
JR: They truly want to do the right things. They have opinions and they are always willing to voice those opinions in a collaborative manner. They are competitive. They care about their teams. They have peer-to-peer respect and there is a strong camaraderie that comes with that, both in and out of the office.
CT: What were some of the challenges you had to overcome to win Region of the Year?
JR: In 2012, we came out of the gate strong and we had the vision,
but it was all about long-term sustainability. The challenge was keeping the energy and the focus there all year. We needed to continue to reinvent what we were doing throughout the year. One of the reasons why we needed to do that was because we hired more new grads than ever before. Finding dentists in this region is tough so the owner dentists agreed with the plan to hire more new grads. They wanted to get the new dentists up and running as fast as they possibly could. They wanted to provide mentorship and to make sure they had a great experience, hoping to reduce associate dentist turnover. That was a huge piece to our success this year. Associate dentist turnover was much lower than in years past. Bringing on as many new grads as we did has been a huge challenge to the ODs, regional team, and to the professional development coach. Another big challenge we had was to complete the decentralized specialty approach. I believe that it is going to yield the right results in the future.
CT: Final thoughts?
JR: The Southwest region is comprised of so many outstanding
people; our regional management team: Jack Knudsen, Mike Butler, Carol Garner, and Sue Rudow; our specialty regional team: Luis Gutierrez, Karen Johnson, and Maha Said-Shariff. We also couldn’t have done it without our support team. Support Office Manager Marla Boddy who wears so many hats that I’m going to have to get her a closet to keep all of them in; Erica Devlin our back office trainer; our regional marketing team: Andrea Rodriguez and Eilyn Dawes, whose primary focus is patient acquisition for our supported practices, but they also rally our teams to stay community-centric and give back. I’m also very thankful for the folks our national support team has dedicated to the region: Natasha O’Keefe –PDC, Jennifer Iles – MTD , Stacey Manful – TAM, and many more that work behind the scenes. I’m so proud of our entire team. Every person is professional and constantly strives to be better. I’ve surrounded myself with great people – I really do work with quality individuals.
As a two-time Regional Manager of the Year winner, Jack Knudsen is on a roll! We sat down with Jack to find out what it takes to be the best of the best.
Lori Olsen: What made 2012 such a successful year for your region?
Jack Knudsen: Besides having a great team? Looking back to 2012, I think this team, down to the office level, did a great job identifying our opportunities for growth and building strong imperatives around them. As a management team, we spent a significant amount of time tracking progress, making adjustments and celebrating success along the way. This region has a fantastic group of owner dentists, associates, managers, and staff. My secret weapon is my management team though. They bring a tremendous amount of talent and experience to the game. I can’t thank them enough for all of their hard work last year.
LO: You are a two-time winner – how does it feel to win backto-back?
JK: It feels really good, especially considering the amount of talent we are competing against. Honestly, the first one was such a surprise. But last year the team around me was gunning for the prize from day one, and I couldn’t be more proud of the challenges they overcame over the course of the year to put together back-to-back #1 spots.
LO: Describe the relationship you have with your affiliated dentists.
JK: This is a pretty demanding operational team. I know at times it feels like a bit of contest of wills, but at the end of the day, month, or year, we are all rowing in the same direction and making great things happen. I feel fully supported by the owner dentists in this region and couldn’t ask for a better team of professionals to work alongside.
LO: Describe the culture/environment in your region.
JK: I think culturally we have a strong mix of mutual accountability, a focus on growing our business together, and an expectation that we will share thoughts, ideas, and continually search for a better way to do business and build a team. No one has all the answers; the more we can rely on every member of the team to share ideas and support necessary change, the more effective we become.
LO: Describe your style of leadership.
JK: Teamwork is hard, and it’s not necessarily natural. I spend a lot of time working to build a team that can rely on each other and hopefully rely on me. Looking out for each other is not optional for this team; it’s an expectation I have of my leaders and of myself.
LO: What makes your affiliated offices so special?
JK: I think it’s the old-school green countertops, or maybe Dr. Hsieh’s beat-up old Lexus out in front of Winery Dental – one of those two. It’s definitely not the high occupancy cost in my Corona offices.
LO: How did specialties impact your office performance?
JK: Specialties were 40 percent of our affiliated offices’ annual revenue. Special thanks to our fantastic specialty teams and my SRM partner, Ms. Maha Sharif.
LO: What advice do you have for other Regionals?
JK: My OMs are not for hire.

There has been quite a bit of confusion regarding the Lava TM Ultimate blocks. The first thing I would like to do is provide clearer definition around the details of this particular block.
When you use a Lava Ultimate, this is NOT considered to be a traditional "Lava" lab-processed crown. A traditional Lava crown is made by a laboratory and has two layers. The first layer, the coping, is imaged and milled, similar to CEREC® Then the lab stacks on the porcelain for the second layer. However, a Lava Ultimate is a monolithic block, and once it has been milled by our CEREC machines, it has only one layer.
A Lava Ultimate block is approximately 80 percent ceramic and 20 percent silica-like composite. This means it is slightly flexible. Many consider Lava Ultimate to be ideal for use in inlays, some onlays, and implant crowns. In fact, those are the areas where I have heard positive feedback regarding this block choice, though it can be used for other procedures as well.
Because of the chemical makeup of this block, it generally mills slightly faster, which helps reduce wear on milling burs. It does NOT go in the oven, but is instead polished manually. For some clinicians, this may speed up their efficiency.
A unique characteristic of the Lava Ultimate is that it can be repaired with composite. Because a portion of the block is silica based, a minor chip or defect might be patched, in appropriate circumstances, thus avoiding re-milling a whole new crown.
Just this past New Year’s Day, a change regarding the categorization of Lava Ultimate blocks took effect. At the ADA code submission meeting last year, 3M pleaded its case to have the Lava Ultimate categorized as a CDT 2740. In the past, the Lava Ultimate had been categorized by the ADA CDT coding system under the code D2710 crown - resin-based composite (indirect). The change to CDT 2740 would place it in the same category as all of our other CEREC block crown restorations. There was some debate as to whether it might deserve its own code due to its unique chemical makeup and
by Dr. Charles Rodgers VP of Clinicians
attributes, but ultimately 3M was successful with its request, and the code for Lava Ultimate is now officially CDT D2740 crown - porcelain/ceramic substrate.
More info on this change can be found at http://bit.ly/wHlQz5
To add further confusion, or perhaps invigorate healthy competition, Vita has announced a new block of its own, called "Enamic." This block is positioned to compete on some level with the Lava Ultimate. It also has a percentage of silica in it, and will be another block that does NOT go in the oven.
Vita’s new block has something different that it believes gives it a superior product over the Lava Ultimate. The internal structure of the Enamic is described as being similar to coral, with silica in the void areas of the structure. Use of this block is expected to mimic the Lava Ultimate as far as procedure choice, polishing, outcomes, etc.
More info on the Enamic can be found at http://bit.ly/XZbvUi
Keep in mind that our primary block use has been IPS Empress® , IPS e.max® and VITABLOCS® Mark II. While it is expected that those will continue to be the majority of our block use for this year, it is not completely clear how things will look beyond that. We will continue to monitor the technology around the block composition and related milling strategies as changes continue to evolve.
I often speak about CEREC ® CAD/CAM materials and advances, but many of our patients need routine fillings. So, have any advances been made on this front? The short answer is yes!
For many years I have contended that the least productive procedure in a dental office was composite fillings. Simply stated, they took a long time to get right. We had to deal with:
1. Extensive periods of isolation
2. Incremental layering
3. Full curing of each incremental layer
4. Prevention of air incorporation in each successive layer
5. Trying to create great anatomy with a material that was steadily hardening under our operatory light
6. Hoping our light actually adequately cured the composite we had placed
7. Trying to get all of the above right so as to prevent post-op sensitivity
At times, this was a daunting challenge; we were really trying to create a monolithic restoration under very adverse circumstances.
Advances in…
• Bulk-fill restoratives
• Curing light technology
• Matrix design have now made composite fillings much easier and more predictable.
Let’s look at each of these issues and recent advances.
For most composites, I like Ivoclar Tetric EvoCeram ® Bulk Fill. It allows for predictable 4 mm bulk fills and consistently ranks at or near the top of the list in all types of physical property testing. It incorporates three different photo initiators, which means that it will cure with your present curing light as long as your light has reasonable power output. It also contains a polymerization booster to ensure adequate polymerization and a light sensitivity inhibitor that makes it easy to contour until you are actually ready to cure. Shrinkage is very minimal and the material contains “shrinkage stress relievers” that eliminate concerns of
by Dr. Brian Buehler Owner Dentist
stress-induced sensitivity or failures. The material also has excellent handling properties.
Curing lights have become much more powerful, but practitioners must always be mindful that the wavelength of their particular light is tuned to the photo initiator in their particular composite with products constantly changing, this can be very unpredictable.
I prefer Ivoclar Bluephase lights because they are designed to hit all initiators currently on the market, have great power, are very ergonomic, have the greatest battery life (in my experience), and seem to put out steady power readings through the years when I've tested mine.
Several nice Matrix designs have come to market in recent years. I prefer the Triodent V3 ring system, but I’d say use what works in your own hands as long as it:
• Is reasonably simple
• Is not too costly
• Adequately contains the composite on the gingival margin
• Incorporates both buccal-lingual and gingival-occlusal contour/convexity
I’d recommend bulk fill for all but your most esthetically challenging cavity preps where multiple layering is unavoidable. Keep increments reasonable to 4 mm depth occasionally it may take two applications. Try not to shorten your cure times, as few of us ever check our lights for true power output. Make sure your light tip is clean if it is not, it kills power output to your composite. The goal is to create monolithic composites because they are better, just as monolithic crowns are.
Until next time, Brian
Buehler, DDS
When I first joined Pacific Dental Services® back in May of 2009, I spent quite a bit of time in the field getting to know the clinical teams and the administrative staff in the PDSaffiliated offices.
I recall being greatly impressed by the passion I encountered with so many of our talented clinicians. During a regional meeting in San Diego, I asked Matt Feeny what his role was in the office. Matt calmly answered me, stating,
For a brief moment, I was confused. Was this man a paramedic or a medical doctor? It took me a moment, and then I replied, “Are you a dental hygienist?”
Matt was clever with his comment, and not far off. Periodontal disease has been linked with cardiovascular disease, stroke, diabetes mellitus, Alzheimer’s disease and various types of cancer. We know that periodontal disease is a chronic infection that elicits a persistent inflammatory response, and if left untreated, this oral infection can have a very profound systemic effect over time.
In the Journal of Dental Research, the CDC recently reported that the National Health and Nutrition Evaluation Survey
by Jan LeBeau Director of Hygiene
47.2% of American adults over the age of 30 have mild, moderate, or severe periodontitis .
(NHANES) estimated that 47.2 percent of American adults over the age of 30 have mild, moderate, or severe periodontitis. Prevalence rates rise above 70 percent for adults over the age of 65. This recent survey included a full-mouth periodontal probe for the first time. It is estimated that earlier studies reported by NHANES, performed with spot periodontal probing, underestimated the prevalence of disease by as much as 50 percent. This data supports the need for a full-mouth periodontal probe to be performed annually for adults as part of the comprehensive exam and preventative maintenance program.
Research shows that many middle-aged Americans see their dentist more often than they see their family physician. This puts dentistry in an ideal position to participate in the war against heart disease, vascular disease and diabetes by performing a full-mouth probe annually, treating any periodontal disease present, managing the disease over the patient’s lifetime and making the necessary referral to the patient’s physician for a physical exam.
So in retrospect, Matt’s statement that he saves lives was pretty accurate. Dentists and hygienists working in collaboration as a clinical team can have a profound effect on their patients’ overall health. Remember, it’s not just about treating the gums. It’s about treating the whole person and saving lives one SRP at a time.

Interview by Danielle Hawkins National Marketing Specialist
It’s an exciting time for PDS® as we continue to grow even bigger and help open affiliated offices in new states. With our recent expansion into the Midwest region, we asked Regional Partner Simon Abrahms to give us the inside scoop on this new endeavor.
Danielle Hawkins: Tell us a little bit about the new affiliated offices in the Midwest region.
Simon Abrahms: We recently opened our first two affiliated offices in Missouri; these are “perimeter” locations that border less-populated areas; one in the northern end of the Kansas City metro and one at the southern end: 805/ Tiffany Springs Dental Group and 801/Belton Modern Dentistry. The team is excited about serving people from rural areas who haven’t had the opportunity to visit offices with the type of technology and services our supported offices offer. By early summer we will turn a new page in PDS history and open supported offices in another state: Kansas.
DH: How many PDS-supported offices will be opening in the Midwest region?
SA: We plan to eventually grow the region to 85-90 supported offices across a four-state area.
DH: What is your number one focus for the Midwest region?
SA: Actually, we have three primary focus areas. The first one is doctor and clinician recruitment. Next is hiring OMs and building front and back office teams. And lastly, instilling and transferring the PDS value system and operational discipline to this part of the country. Two colleagues from California have already transferred to affiliated offices in Kansas City, so this has been a tremendous benefit.
DH: What were some of the challenges you faced while opening affiliated offices in a new region?
SA: Identifying the right people, having the team develop a clear understanding and working knowledge of the PDS-supported clinicians’ approach to dentistry and patient care, and determining the best locations for new supported offices. Another challenge was trying to explain and describe the PDS concept to potential employees while sitting at Starbucks…faith-based hiring at its finest. Most of my colleagues do not live near the first two office locations, but they are excited to work with us, and as a result are willing to travel until the practices open.
DH: Anything else you would like to share?
SA: I am optimistic about the future and prospect of long-term, sustained success for PDS and its affiliated offices in the Midwest region. One of the reasons is because more than 80 percent of dentists in Missouri and Kansas currently work in a solo practitioner office environment, and we bring a unique model and refreshing dental experience that has already been well received.
The horrific event in Newtown, Conn. opened our eyes to what twisted things life can throw our way.
by Dr. Kenneth Burson Owner Dentist
With a heart-wrenching event like this, we often see great love and compassion arise. It was in the midst of all this tragedy that I felt more deeply moved than I have been in my entire life. Just as the healing stage for the victims’ families in Newtown was beginning, PDS-supported offices were entering one of the last weeks of the year. With this came a fun, inspiring challenge: the Big Week. As Operations Manager Kevin Schieffer read the “Daily XP”, I watched a miracle unfold. Our office, sitting around 80 percent, was just told that if we have the biggest week, every full-time team member would receive $200. As Kevin finished the XP for the day, one of the team members excitedly burst out and said, “Let’s win this! And if we do, let’s donate all of the winnings to the victims’ families of the shooting in Newtown.” One by one you saw all the heads in the team nod in approval. What followed that week still gives me chills. Day-by-day and patient-by-patient, the entire team united together in an attempt to empower each patient that came in to complete their needed dentistry. At the end of the week, we had filled all GP and specialty schedules with amazing treatment opportunities. At the end of December, we ended well over 110 percent, and we had won the Big Week. The excitement in our office was electrifying. The team was more excited about the opportunity to give than ever before. As I reflected back on the year, I became aware that when surrounded by the mantra of service, it’s hard not to answer the call of giving.
Thank you to my team at Lone Tree, and to those in PDS that make this company such an amazing place.
North Central Texas celebrated the holidays and concluded an exciting year with a fun-filled, Texas-style party! A great time was had by all at Austin Ranch, and our evening was complete with BBQ, cold drinks, and plenty of dancing. A special thanks to all those who donated to the Toys for Tots drive that night. It was a memorable way to cap off a tremendous year. Cheers to an even better 2013!

The Rocky Mountain region’s holiday party was a blast! On December 8 at the Denver Marriott Tech Center, we celebrated our past year of service. It was a memorable evening with dinner, dancing, door prizes, and a photo booth to show off our pearly whites!

To celebrate a year of hard work, dedication, and teamwork, the Pacific South Coast region held their annual holiday party on Friday, December 14, at the Pasadena Convention Center. Nearly 800 guests attended the party, which showcased a sitdown dinner, dancing, a photo booth, raffle prizes, and the extremely popular candy bar. And who could forget the regional team’s own version of a flash mob! This special event couldn’t have happened without the generous donations from our owner dentists, as well as Dr. Abedi and Dr. Soleiman. The specialists and regional team also donated, allowing us to raffle off many prizes including an iPad® mini, flat-screen TV, Lakers tickets, Disneyland tickets, and more! As Paula Larson noted, “Having the region together to celebrate our successes in 2012 and cheer the New Year was wonderful!”
by Leslie Polley Regional Marketing Manager
The Pacific Northwest Christmas party was celebrated in style this year! Over 400 of us gathered at the Sheraton Grand Hotel in downtown Sacramento and at the Marriott in Portland for fun, food, and dancing, but most importantly, to celebrate the contributions of each person in the region during 2012. We would like to give a special thanks to all those who contributed. Without them, this night wouldn’t have been possible.

The Southwest region partied all over the Inland Empire and San Diego to celebrate the holidays. From dinners at their favorite steakhouse to Mexican fiestas to poker parties, each owner dentist hosted their own intimate party for their office employees. The owner dentists wanted to show how much they value and appreciate their hard-working teams. Happy holidays from the Southwest region!

Since 2009, PDS®-supported offices have seen many changes with Sirona's CEREC units. We started off with the CEREC AQ Redcam system with 3D software and compact milling unit. Next came the MCXL unit, which changed how the restorations were milled. The increased speed decreased the time it took to mill a restoration, allowing offices to become more efficient. The next transition was the Bluecam replacing the Redcam. The Bluecam’s automatic imaging feature increased the rate at which images could be taken, and as an added bonus, it also required less powdering.
The new software version 3.80 introduced the buccal bite imaging technique. This allowed users to move away from using bite registration material to obtain occlusal contacts, saving money on costs. It also allowed users to take images of the opposing arch and the buccal bite with the patient in centric occlusion. Our affiliated offices were finally able to design restorations using a full opposing model. For some, this new process was an uncomfortable shift away from using bite registration material, but once they were comfortable with this process, they never looked back.
The introduction of the CEREC software version 4.0 changed everything. There was a whole new look and layout, and some of the tools available in the older software were replaced, challenging the offices in their efficiency. It also added some critical updates to features, allowing us to create restorations on opposing arches. Today the majority of our affiliated offices are using v4.0 and creating esthetic, functional restorations, making PDS-supported offices the world leader in CEREC restorations!
Our next phase is coming in 2013 with the CEREC Omnicam! The Omnicam redefines everything we know about imaging. No longer are we relying on single images to create a model. Now, we can take live FULL COLOR scans of the arch with NO POWDER! The Omnicam runs strictly off of the CEREC v4.0 software and is not backwardly compatible with v3.8, so those of you who are looking forward to the Omnicam should sharpen your knowledge of the v4.0 software to ensure your office remains efficient when the camera arrives.
There is a learning curve to taking precise images and reading the color models, but it is not as steep as previous versions, which gives PDS-affiliated offices an advantage. This technology not only makes it easier to image for CEREC and Sirona (CEREC) Connect, but it opens the realm for future uses of the Omnicam, such as imaging for partial dentures and orthodontic treatment, not to mention what can already be done with CEREC and GALILEOS and implants. PDS-affiliated offices will continue to remain at the forefront of digital and same-day dentistry with CEREC, this new technology, and through our partnership with Sirona and Patterson. A world of possibilities is opening once again–where will your place be?
Note: Arrival of the Omnicam camera in PDS-supported offices will follow a scheduled deployment calendar. This is to ensure that proper implementation of the updated software and training is completed to allow for a smooth transition in the office. The Omnicam rollout schedule will be released at a later date.
