FIGURING THE GROUND

University of Toronto- Master of Urban Design

TYPE: Academic- Urban Design Studio

DATE: Winter 2025

LOCATION: Lawrence Avenue East, Toronto, Canada

Instructor: Carol Moukheiber, Kanwal Aftab

ROLE: Individual project

An inversion of the figure-ground shifts the condition from disarticulation to structure, transforming an accumulation of solids into an accumulation of voids. Gradients of open space are defined not only by the façade -- the street wall -- as a public element but also by new interior voids that create varying levels of openness and intimacy. This project proposes an articulation -- a figuring of the ground -- which extends beyond individual buildings, reconnecting Lawrence as a central spine for movement and interaction, integrating the neighbourhood through a continuous network of open spaces.

DOWNSVIEW FRAMEWORK PLAN

University of Toronto- Master of Urban Design

TYPE: Academic- Integrated Urbanism Studio

DATE: Fall 2024

LOCATION: Toronto, Canada

Instructor: Roberto Damiani

ROLE (Group project): Academic project developed in a group of three people

The project restores connectivity by integrating the site into the city fabric through three public connectors linked to the ecological network. An east-west green connector and extended street networks strengthen ties to the urban context, while the former runway becomes a vibrant pedestrian strip. Four distinct districts emerge, featuring diverse building typologies that balance density, porosity, and privacy. Green fingers activate Downsview Park, and existing structures are adaptively reused as amenities, unifying the overall vision.

6.12 Componente de movilidad

During my undergraduate studies in architecture, I researched urbanism and multifamily housing design, earning an honorable mention for my thesis on informal rural settlements. I later joined university-linked projects and, in 2019, became a support professor, eventually leading my first urban planning group in 2021. My work focuses on the Integral Improvement of informal neighborhoods, a global issue, guiding students in developing research, thesis-style documents, and graphic materials. We have explored strategies for informal settlements in Colombia, with notable projects in La Cruz and El Pesebre (Medellín), Los Farallones (Ciudad Bolívar), and San Cristóbal (Bogotá).

ACADEMIC RESEARCH

INTEGRAL IMPROVEMENT OF LA PLAYA RURAL SETTLEMENT

This academic project was given as a conclusion and application exercise of the thesis of the architecture undergraduate program and It was developed from year three to year five. The study site established was a Rural Village Center in Rionegro Antioquia, limited by a national highway and surrounded by the agricultural district. It began with a stage of documentation and diagnosis, in which the place was known in its entirety, and problems and opportunities to solve the territory, in general, were defined. Then, a master plan-type formulation process was developed where points such as population resettlement, future growth planning, and new land uses were defined.

INTERMUNICIPAL SPORTS ARENA

Cóncavas Engineers and Architects - Architectural Department

TYPE: Professional- Sports architecture

DATE: 2021- Eight months

LOCATION: Itagui, Antioquia, Colombia

ROLE: Design team leader, concept design, drawing, Revit modeling, public engagement process

Based on the need to create a new sports space for a city of 300,000 inhabitants, we designed a project where people can play soccer professionally and practice combat sports. It is an architectural proposal that uses local materials since Itagui is a city that traditionally produces clay for bricks. In the same sense, the geometry of the buildings seeks a horizontal scale that is proportional to the surroundings. Regarding the urban approach, the immersion of the project between two streets and two schools resulted in the generation of transversal routes with accessible mobility for pedestrians.

On the right side of the project is located the combat sports coliseum and on the left is the soccer field, bleacher area and service areas

The upper walkway is the characteristic element of the project. It allows to visualize the activities of all the sports areas and the transit of all types of users, including people with reduced mobility

The soccer field occupies a large part of the available land, and is designed according to FIFA regulations. The combat sports coliseum, green areas, the upper walkway and service areas complement the program

FIZEBAD HOUSE

Freelance work

TYPE: Professional- Residential architecture- Interior design

DATE: 2022- Seven months

LOCATION: El Retiro, Antioquia, Colombia

ROLE (Group project): Concept design, site design, interior design, Revit modeling, rendering

The Fizebad House is a freelance project for a U.S. couple seeking a country home in the Colombian mountains. Designed on a three-acre sloped site with views of the La Fe reservoir, the single-level house follows the terrain’s natural contours and preserves existing trees by adjusting terrace placements. The contemporary design incorporates traditional Colombian elements like a perimeter corridor, sloping roofs, clay tiles, and brick. Inside, wood dominates the material palette, complemented by stone and light colors to create a warm atmosphere.

Cóncavas Engineers and Architects - Architectural Department

TYPE: Professional- Sports architecture

DATE: 2021- Six months

LOCATION: Caldas, Antioquia, Colombia

ROLE (Group project): Design team leader, concept design, site design, Revit modeling

The project is situated on a sloping suburban lot in Antioquia, Colombia, catering to swimmers from surrounding areas. It faces challenges from the topography, nearby low-rise buildings, and an abandoned historic railroad track. The design proposes staggered program spaces on the terrain, connected by a ramp leading to the main semi-Olympic pool, which accommodates people with reduced mobility. The materials used include locally produced concrete blocks, and the geometry of each module is inspired by elements of the old railroad stations.

As a strategy to reduce the use of artificial light, we designed a roof with translucent surfaces that allow controlled entry of natural light

YARUMITO URBAN CIRCUIT

Cóncavas Engineers and Architects - Architectural Department

TYPE: Professional- Landscape and Urbanism

DATE: 2021- One year

LOCATION: Itagui, Antioquia, Colombia

ROLE (Group project): Design team leader, concept design, Revit modeling, public engagement process

The Yarumito Urban Circuit is a 0.7-mile urban design, landscape, and public space project developed on the land once occupied by the Old Antioquia Railroad. It aims to connect the urban area of Itagüí with a metro station, promoting pedestrian and cyclist use. The project includes historical markers in concrete that recount the railroad’s history, along with urban elements such as orchards and avenues. The design features flexible pavement, new green spaces, and the planting of over 400 trees to address rainwater infiltration and restore wildlife paths disrupted by urban development.

METROPOLITAN ROAD CORRIDOR

Versal-Birdó architects and Cóncavas Engineers and Architects

TYPE: Professional- Landscape and Urbanism

DATE: 2020-2021- One year

LOCATION: Itagui, Antioquia, Colombia

ROLE (Group project): Concept design, Cad drawing (General and detail drawings)

The design focuses on smart city principles, particularly mobility and green infrastructure, to create a two-mile urban road corridor that accommodates vehicles and public transit while prioritizing pedestrians and cyclists. The project includes extensive tree planting, preservation of existing trees, and the creation of large green areas. Native tree species are chosen to attract wildlife and provide shade, while low, colorful plants reflect the area’s identity as the “city of flowers.”
