Empowerment in Today's Progressive Pracঞces There is no denying that the dental industry has ushered in an age of rapid change and technological innova on. A perfect venue to display, witness and experience all these changes is at the Interna onal Dental Show (IDS), the undisputed leading global trade fair in the dental industry.

This year, I was fortunate enough to attend and be present at the most anticipated dental event in the world in Cologne, Germany. It was an exciting and overwhelming experience that surpassed my expectations. From digital intraoral cameras, digital 3D printers, and latest so ware to the newest gadget and product offerings – IDS 2019 is definitely an event that was not missed.

While the trend is moving towards global digitalisa on, it has become a priority for all modern prac ces to focus on keeping pace with advancements.

In this issue, Mr. Yuval Shaked of Align Technology talks about their company’s latest offerings, including the new iTero Element 5D Imaging System, and how they integrate workflows for den sts and laboratories, aiming to drive and spearhead the growth of the dental industry with a focus on the Asia Pacific region (pages 36-39).

In turn, Mr. Hans Geiselhöringe, President of Nobel Biocare, shares the company’s recent announcement on the beginning of the Mucointegra on era, the new Xeal surface technology, and the development of TiUltra, a new ultra-hydrophilic, mul -zone implant surface (pages 40-43).

Dental Asia caught up with Dentsply Sirona’s Ms. Maureen MacInnis and Ms. Julie Mroziak, as they shared insights on their passion for their work, self-discovery, work-life balance, and women empowerment - while holding top posi ons for one of the world’s premier manufacturers of professional dental solu ons. It was such a heart-warming interview as they honestly reveal their personal experiences of being working mothers which I genuinely relate to – and I know our readers will do as well (pages 30-35).

Speaking of independent women, Ms. Louisa Lee, talks about the journey of DP Dental, a progressive and fully-integrated bou que prac ce which boasts the most current cu ng edge technology, and which she and her husband, Dr. Yue Weng Cheu, built from the ground up in Singapore 13 years ago (pages 18-21).

Dental Updates Dental Asia Adds New Members to its Advisory Board

Recently, Dental Asia would like to recognise and give credit to our active and renowned contributors. We have added three new advisory board members, namely: Dr. Clarence Tam, Dr. Wong Li Beng and Dr. Anand Narvekar.

We have also revised our glory board in our magazine and on all our media platforms.

Dr. Clarence Tam heads a practice in Auckland, New Zealand, which specialises in cosmetic and restorative dentistry. She is originally from Canada, where she completed her Doctor of Dental Surgery and General

Practice Residency at the University of Western Ontario and the University of Toronto, respectively.

Dr. Tam is the Chairperson and Director of the New Zealand Dr. Anand Narvekar Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry.

She is currently the only person in Australia to hold Board-Certified Accredited Member Status with the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. She frequently and continually lectures internationally.

Dr. Wong Li Beng is a Consultant and Periodontist at Ng Teng Fong General Hospital (Singapore), where he is currently appointed as the Director of Service for Preventive Dentistry. Dr. Wong provides a comprehensive range of non-surgical and surgical periodontal therapy as well as dental implant procedures. He is an adjunct

lecturer at Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP), School of Health Sciences and sits on the committee of the NYP Dental Hygiene and Therapy Advisory Panel.

Dr. Anand Narvekar graduated dentistry from Bharti Vidyapeeth Pune in 1996. He has immersed himself in the field of dentistry with a special focus in aesthetic dentistry.

His special interest lies in treating complex full-mouth rehabilitation and smile design cases. His keen eye for aesthetics extends beyond dentistry and he’s a globally acclaimed photographer with his photographs published in industry-wide publications. He is an advocator for MiCD Global Academy and conducts workshops for articulators, photography and direct resin restorations. Moreover, Dr. Narvekar is a key opinion leader for Shofu South Asia Pacific, S.A.M articulator Germany, Bausch Dental Germany, Strauss Garrison Dental U.S.A. Dental Updates Primescan: Making Waves in the Industry Earlier this year, Dentsply Sirona introduced its new intraoral scanner: Primescan. After its launch, Dentsply Sirona made waves during the International Dental Show (IDS) 2019 by showcasing the new standards for impressions with Primescan in their lectures, workshops and at their booths.

With its completely new, patent-pending digital impressioning technology, Primescan enables high-precision digital impressions to be taken of the entire jaw.

The new Primescan presents numerous possibilities for users and was designed for various digital workflows – with the laboratory directly in the practice, with CEREC or in cooperation with external partners. Validated interfaces noticeably simplify the process, offering dentists the flexibility they desire.

Primescan’s optical impression system is very advanced. The scan of the surfaces of the teeth is done with high-resolution sensors and shortwave light, capturing up to one million 3D data points per second. With optical high-frequency contrast analysis, they can now be calculated more accurately than ever before. Dentsply Sirona has submitted a patent application for this process. With Primescan, it also is possible to scan deeper areas (up to 20 mm). This enables

digital impressions even for subgingival or particularly deep preparations.

Additionally, Primescan also scores in terms of hygienic safety. Thanks to the smooth surfaces of Primescan and the acquisition centre, the hygienically critical areas, which are often difficult to clean, can be reprocessed safely, quickly and easily.

After the conclusion of IDS, Dentsply Sirona showed no signs of slowing down. Recently in Asia, the company held two separate launches for Primescan in the region. First, an exciting two-hour cocktail event was held on 12th April at Conrad Hotel in Singapore. It was attended by around 40 guests who had the chance to learn more about Primescan and its features. They were also invited to explore innovation and technology around McLaren cars.

Dental Updates Ivoclar Vivadent CEO Mr. Robert Ganley Receives Excellence in Health Care Award Ivoclar Vivadent congratulates M r. R o b e r t A . G a n l e y, C E O , for being honoured with the Excellence in Health Care Award. Presented by Business First of Buffalo recently at a special ceremony in downtown Buffalo, New York, the 2019 Excellence in Health Care Award recognises Mr. Ganley as being among the top men and women in the Western New York healthcare industry. Other award honourees include physicians, nurses, administrators, board members, advocates, and researchers whose work has improved how the health system works in Western New York hospitals, laboratories, clinics, nonprofits, and health facilities.

“Being acknowledged as a health care leader within the Western New York community is a wonderful honour,” said Mr. Ganley. “I extend my congratulations

and thanks to the other award recipients for their heroic achievements, high standards of patient care, and dedication to improving the health and wellness of our region.”

Mr. Ganley’s initiatives have also involved giving back by supporting dental associations and their foundations. Over the last decade, Ivoclar Vivadent has donated millions of dollars to dental associations and not-for-profit outreach efforts, including the American College of Prosthodontics and the National Association of Dental Laboratories (NADL). Just this past year, Ivoclar Vivadent supported the NADL Foundation by donating a Harley-Davidson softail classic motorcycle for the “Spirit of the Aesthetic Revolution” fundraising campaign; this effort raised more than $15,000 for the NADL Foundation scholarship and grants program.

Mr. Ganley has also remained steadfast in the organisation’s global commitment to providing underserved populations with access to oral health care. From product donations to special initiatives—including Give Kids a Smile Day, the Wisdom Tooth Project, and missionary service groups— Ivoclar Vivadent has touched the lives of tens of thousands of patients worldwide.

“We try to educate and improve the oral health care of others whenever we possibly can,” said Mr. Ganley.

A 39-year veteran of Ivoclar Vivadent, Mr. Ganley will be retiring in July. However, he will remain active with the organisation as a member of its Supervisory Board. ■

Dental Updates 3Shape and GuardLab Announce Equipment and Marketing Partnership 3Shape, a developer and manufacturer of 3D Scanners and CAD/CAM software solutions for the dental industry, announced on 4th April an Equipment and Marketing Partnership with GuardLab®, a NY-based sports technology brand that specialises in using 3D technology and 3D printing to create the most accurately fitting and protective mouthguards in the market.

By the end of the year, the new corporate design will be visible across all channels and countries”, says Ms. Anita Thallinger on the relaunch of the wh.com website. ■

Dental Updates Anthogyr Joins the Straumann Group

The Straumann Group and its partner Anthogyr have signed an agreement that paves the way for Straumann to increase its stake in Anthogyr from 30% to full ownership. The transaction is expected to close early in the second quarter.

Financial details were not disclosed.

Anthogyr adds a high-quality attractively-priced European brand to the Group’s portfolio, supporting its strategy to penetrate the attractive non-premium implant segment. With a history of almost 30 years in implantology, Anthogyr is a well-established brand that develops, manufactures and sells high quality, innovative, implant and CAD/CAM solutions.

Its comprehensive portfolio addresses the upper value implant segment and includes fully and apically tapered designs, as well as parallel-walled tissue and bone level implants. The company has a strong clinical network of key opinion leaders in its home market, where it is the largest supplier of non-premium implant solutions. The partnership between the two companies dates back to early 2016, when Straumann acquired a 30% stake and took over Anthogyr’s business in China.

Dental Updates Cattani Asia has Appointed a New Technical Specialist Recently, on 24th April, the plant room equipment company, Cattani Asia was delighted to announce the appointment of Mr. Lee Fook Sung as a Technical Specialist.

Mr. Lee will start with Cattani Asia on 1st July.

Mr. Lee, is an electro-mechanical engineer, brings a tremendous amount of knowledge and experience to the role.

He has worked in the dental industry in Asia for more than 19 years, and in that time has worked for a number of leading equipment companies.

Mr. Lee will be based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, but his responsibility is for Cattani Asia equipment throughout Southeast Asia and India. One of his first priorities will be contacting Cattani Asia’s distributors, with an emphasis on providing technical support and training. His expertise also includes project work, for example pipeline drawing and installation advice.

More Than A Progressive Practice

n 2006, DP Dental started as a small practice founded by a husband and wife tandem, Dr. Yue Weng Cheu and Ms. Louisa Lee. Together, they have created a unique, fully-integrated, boutique practice, complete with some of the most cutting-edge technology and knowledge in dentistry. They serve clients who fly in from all over the world to experience this integrative and functional approach to healthcare. In this issue, Ms. Louisa Lee discusses their journey as a practice.

As we celebrate the 13th year since we first bought over a tiny two-room one-chair practice and how we have grown DP Dental into an eight-chair two-branch group, we have been asked to share our journey and how we managed to grow our dental practice over the years. In this article, I will be sharing some of the things we had done over the years that led us to where we are today.

Aside from these, I’ll also share the costly lessons we have learned along the way, so that hopefully, other budding practice owners will not have to walk down the same arduous path we did.

being progressive practitioners of advanced dentistry. “D” stands for “Digital Dentistry” and the “P” stands for “Progressive Practice.”

From the moment I started managing our practice, I realised that we had to be unique in order to survive and last long in the dental business. Every entrepreneur is essentially running two businesses at one time - the one of the present and the business of the future.

Every business owner wears many hats - that of the operator, a manager and lastly, that of a leader who strategises and sets the future vision of the business.

Very early on, Dr. Yue Weng Cheu and I identified that technology will be our differentiator. At the moment, it is no doubt that we live in times wherein technology has become a disruptor of industries.

Rather than fearing that technology would threaten and replace dental professionals, we started with the intention to be early adopters of technology. With this in mind, by the time technological adaptation is mature within the industry, we would already be the leaders in it.

In 2007 and 2008, we started by being one of the first few practices in Asia to utilise laser and CAD/CAM dentistry. To this day, we own one of the most comprehensive ranges of

laser in one practice: two diode lasers, two Er-YAGs, an Nd-YAG and two Er-Cr-YSGGs. Always expanding his knowledge, Dr. Yue not only aspired to be a laser user but also pursued his craft to its highest level. With lasers, Dr. Yue made sure that he attained a Mastership with the World Clinical Laser Institute and also lectured and taught dental laser applications in universities around the world. We invested in the CEREC Omnicam and also 3Shape technology and the next scanner we are definitely eyeing is the iTero as we are an exclusive Invisalign practice.

We not only engage with dental distributors but also with the principal companies, who invite us to personally tour their factories where the dental equipment and materials are assembled and made, giving us a deeper understanding of the companies’ philosophy and allowing us to work only with those whose values are closely aligned to ours.

Our philosophy that drives our vision

We are very much driven by a people-centric philosophy. We treat our patients as we would our own family. On a personal level, we like to solve problems at the root cause and this applies to the solutions we provide for our patients as well.

Our vision is to help those who are not well get healthy and continue to help those who are healthy get optimised. In the process, we educate our patients to not wait till they fall sick or feel pain before coming to us which is considered as a reactive way of managing their health. Instead, we encourage our patients to return for a six monthly active maintenance, during which, apart from their routine they are also receiving a preventive check. That is also when they receive the latest update on what new information we have learnt as a practice.

Congruence

The concept of being congruent is very important to me. One of the joys of being a business owner is the liberty to have my own personal values reflected on my business. I am able to maintain a consistency of being because I am in a position that enables me to determine the outcome of things.

We let the word out to dental suppliers and friends on exactly the type of people we are look for and they in turn channel the right people to us.

Apart from alignment of values, maintaining congruence is how one can gain the trust of the people around you. The more consistent and aligned we are in all aspects of our lives, the easier it is for others to understand and trust us. In fact, we have a set of core values that identify with. We make it visible in the practice and include it in our hiring process as that becomes the basis for which we hire new team members.

Couple entrepreneurship: 1+1=3

I truly admire those dentists who have multiple roles, being the clinician/operator and also that the manager of their practice. It is not easy to be doing both roles. DP Dental has a clinical director, Dr. Yue Weng Cheu, and I am the managing director. Looking back, I remember when we first started out, we had people advising us (out of a place of good intention) against working together as there had been cases they had come across of couples who fall out because of their business partnership.

However, I believe that we have managed to grow the practice over the last 13 years because there were two of us driving the business. Actually, I recently discovered that while my husband had always considered me a co-pilot, I had been viewing myself as a vice-captain. I was surprised when I discovered my own limiting self-belief, and since then, I have acknowledged my own equal contribution to the growth of the practice.

Dr. Yue and I are very different; I am a long-term

strategic thinker while he is a creative visionary. However, we are both alike when it comes to embracing the challenge of being early adopters and walk down paths others typically do not dare to go. We are very aligned in the bigger picture of what we would like to achieve in this world, and that binds us together in a common goal.

Our customers and our team

Aside from being part of the healthcare industry, we consider ourselves as a service industry. A basic tenet of what makes a business successful is by fulfilling customers’ expectations and satisfaction. This leads to our biggest “marketing” secret - that referral is the best form of marketing. Do an excellent job and people will return and in fact, even recommend their family and friends to you.

In the same way, this is how we have been recruiting new people to join our team.

We believe that every business needs to start with the customer in the centre. At DP Dental, there is no pyramidal hierarchical structure.

Instead, if we are to draw a diagram of our company structure - it is one in which everyone on the team is surrounding the customer in the middle. We exist to serve the customer and our team knows that we are all in this together. We tell the team that if there is to be a “boss” in the business, then that is none other than our customers, for they are the very reason why our business still exists.

Apart from customers, the next important people are the team; without a team, there is no way a business can grow. I have learned that the optimal size for a boutique practice like ours in any one location is to be a four chair practice with less than 15 people.

Previously, we have faced the issue of an unstable team when we expanded from a four to six chairs practice and employed 10 new people on top of our original 15. This incident threw off our culture balance and it took us almost three years to regain our cultural foothold again.

Cultivating practice culture

Most of the time, culture is not what business owners hope to achieve, rather, it is made up by the collective values of the people working in the business. Looking back, when I first

transitioned from an educator to a clinic owner, I knew nothing about management or about dentistry. I was attracted to people who came with knowledge and we’ve hired people who had the ready knowledge. The hope was that they would add on their existing skills and improve the way we are performing things. However, I soon discovered that the golden rule for hiring is attitude, not aptitude - that a good attitude far supersedes the value of experience and aptitude. Now that we are in our 13th year of operation, we have our own system of doing things. We are now more confident to hire people from other industry and who possess certain skills set that we are looking for. For example, instead of “receptionists” we have “patient relations executives”. The way they are titled matters as it sets a frame of mind for their roles. A receptionist simply takes calls, while a patient relations executive builds relationships. For this role, we love to hire people previously in the hotel or airline industry as they have been indoctrinated with high standards of service. We hire the ones we find have the same values as us and we impart them with the dental knowledge needed.

Through the years, we have also realised that money may not be the only motivating factor that drives people. We hire people who have a burning desire to learn - who recognises that there is no end to learning and we continue to provide the education for them. This is why we also call ourselves the “DP Academy”.

Our aim is that whoever joins the practice will leave knowing so much more about healthcare, dentistry and even themselves.

Our talent development manager’s role is to help each individual discover more about their own strengths and weaknesses and be a coach to them. This enables us to place them in roles which will allow them to shine and to lead them to improve on their weak areas.

Hence, within our organisation, it is not uncommon that we have people changing their roles over time. We strongly believe that in order to have patients for life we first need to build a team for life.

In our organisation, we strive for a flat hierarchy where everyone has the potential

to be a leader. Power does not come through position, but through personal influence and persuasion. In a flat organisation, everyone can and should directly communicate with the people concerned.

Establishing good communication

With more people, we quickly recognised the need to establish good communication channels. My goal is to be as transparent as possible. When we hire thinking individuals with great attitude, the best thing we can do is to provide them with as much information, even if it may seem not directly relevant to them. Surprisingly, it is always a delight to see the initiative that can rise from the provision of information.

Moreover, for our clinicians, one of the best forms of communication with our patients is through dental photography.

We take intraoral photos of every patient in our practice. We discovered that this is an important tool our doctors can utilise whenever they make a diagnosis and treatment plan. We truly believe in the saying that pictures can speak a thousand words. When patients clearly see their dental situation, they can easily comprehend what the doctors are explaining. Additionally, it is a good marketing tool to have to see the before and after images of each dental procedure. Again, we started this way before it was popular.

Looking back

Looking back over my past 13 years helming DP Dental, what would I have done differently?

We are now in the midst of another growth phase, and I’m realising that on our scale, starting another practice has the challenges akin to having another start-up business. There are times when I wonder if I had only chosen to keep the practice at its “boutique” size of a four-chair practice and I would have maintained a lifestyle business, one in which Dr. Yue only needed to be practising a three-day work week and could use the rest of the time travelling around the world to either attend courses to deepen his knowledge or to conduct his lectures around the world to share his knowledge.

the decision to have grown the practice, by setting another practice to be in a more central location in order to be closer to the other healthcare practitioners that we hope to work closely with. We have a compelling message we would like to spread to the whole world, and we cannot do it if we remain small. We needed to build up a bigger team to spread that message.

We believe that healthcare should be about prevention and early intervention and in treating the root cause of the problem. We will continue to be progressive – by being ahead and also by implementing small actionable steps and I believe we will get to the next stage. DA

No Shortcuts to Success - Dr. Steve Mark Gan Founder of Gan Advanced Osseointegration Center (GAOC)

Written by Dr. Chala R. Platon uccess never comes easy – and sometimes, once attained, is even more diďŹƒcult to hold on to. Perhaps no one knows this better than Dr. Steve Mark Gan, founder of Gan Advanced Osseointegration Center (GAOC), now the premiere dental centre in the Philippines. Dental Asia caught up with him at the International Dental Show (IDS) 2019 in Cologne, Germany as he revealed how a humble practice - one that started with a third-hand chair and 58USD (PHP3,000) in the bank - evolved into a full-fledged juggernaut in the emerging Philippine dental scene.

Under the Spotlight

Dreaming big

Working since he was 10, selling everything from lemonade and pencils to comics and t-shirts, and raised by parents who taught him to be hardworking and frugal, there was no question that Dr. Gan had big dreams.

“I wanted to be a rockstar. A musician.

But music is not in my blood. What runs in the family is medicine and science,” shared Dr. Gan. Agreeing to a suggestion from his father to switch from a business course to studying dentistry instead, proved to be the turning point as the young Dr. Gan suddenly found himself in his element. “I seemed to like dentistry. I love technology and I love the arts, and I took it from there.” Raised by doctor parents, the young Dr. Gan grew up in operating rooms. But when he was finally introduced to surgery, the stars aligned. He had a fascination with, and a natural God-given talent for surgery.

Many of his fellow colleagues described it as agility coupled with finesse.

Moreover, the surgery results showed the undeniable: Dr. Gan was meant to do this.

Apart from dreaming big, Dr. Gan was also fortunate enough to be armed with what could be one of the most vital factors of his success: a topnotch education.

After graduating from the University of the East (UE) in 1993 and undergoing a year of surgical training at the Philippine General Hospital (PGH), Dr. Gan, with all of his life savings in tow, flew to the U.S. for further studies. He had a cross residency at the University of Southern California (USC) and then took implant studies at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he would meet friend and mentor Dr. Peter K. Moy. “I saw the disparity and the difference between American dentistry and Philippine dentistry.”, Dr. Gan recalls, “While I was in the U.S., I had big dreams for Philippine dentistry for it to be looked at differently.

I wanted a clinic that would be at par with international dental practices.”

Dr. Gan’s dreams eventually evolved to become not only for himself, but for Philippine dentistry as a whole.

Homecoming

Coming back to the Philippines in 1998, Dr. Gan humbly took over his late grandmother’s practice, in a room with only wooden chairs and no tables. Again, his parents’ life lessons proved invaluable.

“We were not poor but we were not rich either. My parents always taught me the sense of saving up and that life is hard and challenging.”

His patient flow eventually diminished, to a point that he would see only 1-3 per day (from an average of 18). He began to incur debt and resorted to borrowing, until he dug himself a hole millions of pesos deep with the help from his old friends (elementary and high school) and his bestfriend, Mr. Dominic Chung. It was a wake-up call for Dr. Gan. “My friends were there to support me when I needed them. I will never forget them for being there and helping me get up again. I am proud to say that we have a lot of touching stories. They are my true friends and until now we are still all good friends,” revealed Dr. Gan.

After a year of grinding it out, Dr. Gan’s practice began to grow and, with the help from his friends, Dr. Paul Achacoso and Dr. Ricardo Gutierrez, he managed to enter into a hospital setting with St. Luke’s Medical Centre, one of the leading hospitals in the country. Together the trio would then open a dental implant group practice in 1999.

In 2001, he opened the first GAOC clinic, became razor-like in his focus on his practice, and worked himself to the bone. After getting married and two years later, with the help of his few friends, Dr. Gan finally found himself free from debt. By 2006, GAOC expanded, bought over a state-of-the-art centre, and never looked back.

Pressure makes diamonds

Massive recognition came when a prominent TV personality in the Philippines, Mr. Boy Abunda, came in for implant treatment and, after receiving quality treatment and outstanding results from GAOC, began promoting Dr. Gan and the clinic during his regular TV programs.

After a year, Dr. Gan and his two friends would then unanimously decide to call it quits and fold the group practice to focus on their friendship, instead of the differences of vision they each had for the business. “After everything, up to now, I could say that we are still the best of friends. I still consider Paul my idol, for teaching me everything, and Ricardo became my godfather in my wedding.”

The years after though, were far from smooth-sailing. From 1999-2000, and being an entrepreneur who wanted to establish and build up his own practice again, Dr. Gan pulled out all the stops.

“I was young and aggressive. I was building a practice and I tended to overcharge and overspend. I was enjoying life, partying every night – meaning I wasn’t balancing funds. I didn’t pay attention, not knowing that life has a way of hitting you really hard to wake you up,” he confessed.

“I did not expect any endorsement from him as he was paying me for my services.

But he insisted and thanked me every day in all his shows. Mr. Boy Abunda said he was grateful because I changed his life, removed his fear of dentists and gave him quality service and dental treatment.

In no time, my clinic was packed with patients and all said they came based on Mr. Abunda’s endorsement,” recalled Dr. Gan. He soon realised he was established in the industry not only by having numerous patients but also by being recognised by colleagues and the Philippine Dental Association. This motivated Dr. Gan to do more and expand his business in the industry.

Back in 2011, we established Samurai Dental Laboratory and Gan Tech Industries, our distribution firm.

Two years ago, in 2017, we opened up Novodental which is our chain of dental clinics,” he fondly recalls.

Presently, Novodental has five branches and is looking to build five more this year (and targeting 20 branches by end of 2020). In turn, Samurai Dental Laboratory, in collaboration with Japanese and Brazilian dental technicians, is now eight years strong and counting, and has become one of the leading dental laboratories in the Philippines.

Helping the industry flourish

When asked about advice on how to overcome the many challenges of starting a practice, Dr. Gan replied, “Practice what you preach. If you decide to do something, in life or in surgery, give it your best. Be the best you can be.”

He stressed the importance of taking it one step at a time, of taking no shortcuts, and making time to learn new things.

“I wasn’t really good in periodontics because my basic training is oral surgery, but I had to push myself to learn more about connective tissue grafts, soft tissue grafting, until I overcame my challenges.”

For the young generation of new dentists, and pulling from his own experiences, Dr. Gan advises them to sacrifice luxury in the early going and be patient.

“Strengthen your foundation first and prepare. The rewards will come later on.

You have to go through the process. First, you have to have the proper training.

Second, you have to have the proper equipment.” And because he believes that quality service can only be possible with quality equipment and material, Dr. Gan established Gan Tech Industries (GTI), as a service to dentists.

GTI introduces premium quality products in the Philippine market to bring the latest equipment and materials closer to the practices in the country. “For example, we have oil-less compressors for restorative dentistry to avoid the problem of filter sediments. As for materials, we don’t go for cheap replacements or replicas, and only carry premium products - those that are backed by years of clinical research, studies, and literature reviews. I believe that these are the things we have to invest on.”

Wide breadth of interests

To keep up with the ever-changing nature and fast pace of technology, it also helps to have a wide breadth of interests, Dr. Gan revealed. In his present practice, he specialises in periodontics, oral surgery, and dental implants. But his personal interests have led him to dabble in different dental areas such as maxillofacial surgery for fractures and reconstructive surgery on trauma patients.

“My mom is an anesthesiologist so I grew up in operating rooms. I watched her and I saw how surgeries are done. Maybe I had always wanted to be a surgeon”, Dr. Gan shared.

He advises the current crop of dentists to keep learning and keep current, while stressing the importance of continuing education. “Dental education is imperative.

Dentists have to push themselves to keep current and learn more because dentistry is an ever-changing industry with a five-year paradigm shift - where every five years there is a new emerging technology.”

In a bid to support continuing education for dentists, Dr. Gan established the GAOC Academy, where they have gathered esteemed and prestigious faculty from around the world - all the way from the U.S. and Europe (Italy, Spain, and the U.K.), Australia, and Asia (Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Thailand) have been featured to share their experience and know-how.

Tradition and digitalisation

GAOC currently features the latest in digital technology including 3D printing, surgical planning, orthodontic planning, the 3Shape TRIOS, digital smile design, and the most advanced CBCT scans.

“I have always been fond of toys. We have laser technology, implants and more.

The list goes on. Our clinic is the most advanced in the country, and modesty aside, we are even more advanced than some clinics in America or in the world. I am more than happy to show everybody our clinics.”

He believes that in this age of globalisation, the momentum of the new age will not stop for anyone, and dentists should keep up with the technological trends, instead of just playing catch up. That being said, however, he still believes in the importance of holding on to tradition.

“Traditional practice is always the foundation of any practice. There is nothing wrong with being a traditionalist,” Dr. Gan said. Once the foundation is set though, he believes it is imperative to move forward. “We live in a modern world and we want to give the most efficient, least invasive, and quality modern dentistry to our patients.”

Words of wisdom

“Practice what you preach. As Mahatma Gandhi would say: ‘Live as if you are going to die tomorrow. Learn as if you are going to live forever’.” Dr. Gan believed in the value of striking a balance, even quoting Confucius to describe his work-life situation, now that he’s juggling his practice and being a happily married father of two children. “If you love your work, you don’t have to work a single day of your life.”

Dr. Gan says the next three to five years will be exciting for GAOC, which promises to come out with different innovations that will surprise and rock the Philippine dental arena. The vision of GAOC to provide the best quality dentistry in the country is at hand.

Ms. Maureen MacInnis, the only female member of the Executive team, is the Senior Vice President, Chief Human Resources Officer and Communications. Another notable position at Dentsply Sirona is held by Ms. Julie Mroziak, the Vice President of Dentsply Sirona Lab. Through the years, Dental Asia has interviewed most of the executives of Dentsply Sirona. In this issue, we would like to focus on the top female leaders of the company. We were privileged to have had a heart-to-heart talk with Ms. Maureen MacInnis and Ms. Julie Mroziak of Dentsply Sirona during the recent International Dental Show in Cologne, Germany, and to discuss the

She has over 25 years of experience in all aspects of Human Resources, particularly with expertise in organisation design, talent acquisition, succession planning and communications.

Dentsply Sirona has approximately 16,000 employees and, with the help of her strong team, Human Resources makes a big difference in the development of talent in the company. Aside from this, she emphasised that communication is of course a powerful tool when connecting to customers and employees.

Aside from this, Ms. Mroziak highlights the importance of the laboratory aspect and in particular, the dental technicians, who operate more in the background.

They are the persons behind the scenes meticulously working on dental appliances and dental prosthesis. She connects with them and has fostered lasting relationships with dental laboratories and dental technicians.

We are fortunate enough to be with them through all these years. We help them not only by selling materials/equipment but also transforming their businesses to be more efficient, profitable and to continue to respect their heritage. We help them during transition and evolve their businesses,” added Ms. Mroziak.

Rising above it all

At present, leading positions are predominantly held by men. It is a breath of fresh air to see women playing important roles and leading the industry like Ms. Maureen MacInnis and Ms. Julie Mroziak.

Nevertheless, being in a male-dominated field is not without its challenges. Let us learn from these incredible ladies on how they have risen above it all.

Ms. MacInnis shared that her focus has been promoting and bringing other women up to leadership roles. She sees this as her biggest challenge and at the same time her biggest opportunity.

“The pool of women talent we have is amazing. They are all capable, educated, and experienced. They perform and execute their tasks and duties excellently.

Now, my responsibility is creating visibility for them, empowering these women,

propelling and guiding them into roles in which I know they will succeed.

Sometimes, it is not easy to step-up for roles that are typically dominated by men but I am here to help others, especially women to be the best they can be,” explained Ms. MacInnis.

Aside from this, she revealed that earlier in her career, not limited to the dental industry, it was challenging to be heard and acknowledged for her work and ideas.

“We need to have our own voice. We need to be more confident and we need to be clear about our goals. We are what we bring to the table and we should be empowered and stand strong in what we believe in,” added Ms. MacInnis.

However, in the laboratory field which is mostly dominated by men, Ms. Mroziak confessed that it was challenging for her, at first, when it came to being accepted as a female leader and establishing relationships with customers and her fellow colleagues.

“Being the new person and a female in the laboratory field was not easy. Everybody knew each other from trade shows, and they had already built relationships.

Initially, I had to decide how I wanted to represent myself in a male group and in the laboratory field. Eventually, I realised that, with the complete knowledge and understanding of the business, asking

the right questions and listening to them earned their respect. I built my credibility by learning the business and making them feel valued. I answer all their questions, remember their names and support them. I believe this makes a big difference. It is a relationship built on trust and consistency,” said Ms. Mroziak.

Discovering ourselves

We all learn from our own experiences and from overcoming problems and adversities in our journey in discovering ourselves. According to Ms. Mroziak, she had realised that she lacked confidence early on in her career. This led to her making sure to encourage other women, to listen and allow people to speak up.

“As a woman, we might sometimes feel we are not in a position to speak and be heard. Knowing how this feels, it is important for me to give other women the voice, the confidence and support I wish I had had. It took me a long time to get to where I am. I have learned to say ‘No’ and just because someone asks you to do something, you don’t have to always say ‘Yes,” she explained.

For Ms. MacInnis, she noted that first, it’s important to remember that any jobrelated dispute is not personal. Second, we have to choose our battles. We need to determine if we are fighting for a cause or just fighting to win. Third, we need to

filter our priorities and not micro-manage our team. We need to let our team learn, grow and succeed.

“I feel accomplished as a leader when I see my team succeed. I had to learn to give up some responsibilities and allow my team to develop. Hence, we need clarity of roles – people need to know what their responsibilities are and what is expected of them. Therefore, it is my job to create an environment where my team has a safe space to grow, learn, solve problems and confidently approach me whenever they need me. Trust is paramount. They know that I am always supporting them.”

Both women were pleased to impart their advice to other women. According to Ms. Mroziak, she is an encourager. She loves to support other women who have the same spark in their eyes and passion in their hearts.

“I believe that encouragement is substantial in having confidence. I want to open doors for others, let them shine, give them opportunity and, at the same time help them be independent. I want to accelerate and push others to become female leaders, especially in the laboratory industry,” stated Ms. Mroziak.

For Ms. MacInnis, she highlighted,

“Dream big! Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Some are reluctant to do so as they might look vulnerable but asking for help only shows courage and strength. This is something to be proud of and not be embarrassed about.”

Independent strong women

Gone are the days when women had to choose between their career and family.

Ms. MacInnis and Ms. Mroziak are very good examples and role models of having the best of both worlds. They both confessed that it is not easy, it requires dedication and is centred on prioritising.

It is about making smarter choices and balancing time to be able to live a happy life. It may not always be easy and they shared their personal experience to let other career mothers, who might be struggling, know that they are not alone.

Ms. Mroziak shared that she thought working long hours would make her successful and would determine her worth and value at her work place. A pivotal realisation for her was when she had her daughter six years ago.

“Once I had my daughter, I learned that I had to find balance and I needed to prioritise the important things at work.

I had to set proper lists or goals of what needs to get done first versus minor things.

For me, it was crucial to figure out what to focus on, set priorities and stay committed to my work and also being there for my family. I had to be a role model for my daughter. I want her to grow up and be proud of her mother for being strong, loving and giving her all. I want her to see women as independent and capable of being leaders. Women always bring something extra. We bring our hearts into everything we do,” revealed Ms. Mroziak.

Ms. MacInnis also shared her perspective of being a career woman with four children.

She wants career women today to not feel guilty of working and also making sure to have time for their family. According to her, work is important but family, above all, is number one.

“Sometimes, women today feel they have to prove their capabilities at work and always put work before their families. Everyone should know that before mothers come to work, they have already accomplished multiple tasks for their families. I want women to be able to bring their children to school, pick them up and put them to bed.

I want women to take time to take care of themselves. I want women to take a stand and believe that they can have it all – a career and a family. I know women give more than 100% at work and still keep on working at home. Being a career woman is

busy but being a mother is a full-time job.

There are times your family needs you and, when that happens, always choose your family. People need to allow themselves to have personal time,” shared Ms. MacInnis.

Both Ms. Mroziak and Ms. MacInnis strongly believe in the quote: ‘Here’s to strong women. May we know them. May we be them. May we raise them.’ They wish to impart the significance of empowering women to their children, their family, other women and everyone.

Words of encouragement

Both women believe in encouraging and being committed to both their careers and families. They strongly believe that women should feel safe at work to talk about their feelings and struggles so they can be supportive of each other.

Most women think that showing emotions at the workplace is a sign of weakness and vulnerability. On the contrary, Ms. MacInnis and Ms. Mroziak view it as a sign of strength.

“We have to allow ourselves to talk about our difficulties and support each other. We should not be embarrassed. Instead, we have to help bare each other’s burdens. We have to be aware that someone else might be struggling with the same thing, and we can ask for help without the worry of being judged,” explained Ms. Mroziak.

Ms. MacInnis believes, “We need to give ourselves permission to dream big and aspire for more. I wouldn’t be where I am today without sacrifices and hard work. My children are all grown up now but, whenever I receive calls from them, I answer them immediately no matter where I am. I would always politely excuse myself to take their calls. My children know how busy and how hard I work. So, I know whenever they call me, they really need me, and I will always be there for them. Whenever you are with your family, be there with them and make the most of your time with your family.”

Also, both women strongly emphasised that women tend to put others first before themselves and end up neglecting themselves. They both agreed, “We need to value our health. We try to do everything for everyone and, when we are younger, we try to do it all. Our message is to take care of your health because your family needs you.”

Elevating women

Furthermore, Dentsply Sirona not only values women in their company but expects more women playing an important role in the dental industry in the future. The company sees this as a megatrend, and it is crucial to reflect on how to elevate women in dentistry.

One of the company’s answers to this is “Women in Dentistry.” This is an event that is aimed exclusively at women and is designed exclusively by female speakers. The first event

Another event happened in July 2018 in Charlotte, NC. Dentsply Sirona welcomed a group of passionate female dentists and CEREC owners to attend the very first EPIC (acronym for Educate, Practice, Innovate and Connect) Women’s Dental Meeting.

When it comes to promoting female leaders internally, Dentsply Sirona wants to advance women in their professional development through targeted coaching, further training and networking as part of the “Women Inspired Network,” founded in 2016. Every year a new group of Dentsply Sirona employees from all over the world participate in the WIN program for one year.

“It is a journey, and we are making significant progress and we have so much more we can do. The dental industry allows more flexibility for women compared to other industries. Women are gravitating to dentistry as work and life balance is more attainable. As manufacturers, we need to understand the challenges and what our customers need. According to Mr. Shaked, this is the fourth business he is leading and it still excites him as he has never seen market growth like that in the dental industry.

“We are really changing the dental market and we are only just getting started.

I consider the five P’s in marketing (product, price, promotion, place and people) to be helpful in transforming and bringing about a bigger impact on the market.

Presently, I see digital revolution as instrumental in shifting the entire market from analogue to digital. We need to change how customers think and we need to continue providing our customers with the right tools that are quick and reliable,” he said.

Mr. Shaked added that compared to other industries, the dental industry is more privatised and consumer-based.

The decision making process behind the acquisition of equipment and materials takes a much shorter time as compared to the medical device industry, especially for big hospitals where there are many processes in place.

“The dental industry is a faster business to be involved in. I find it easier to reach and attract our consumers as we deal directly with dental professionals and practitioners who are also the owners of their own clinic.”

to progress, Mr. Shaked revealed that he is considering attracting g e n e r a l p r a c t i t i o n e rs ( G P s ) a n d partnering with implant companies or distributors. In the future, Mr. Shaked expects to have intraoral scanners in every chair and some practitioners might even provide a separate or specific room/area in their clinics solely for scanning.

Align Technology wishes for practitioners to scan every patient and the company is looking at ways on how iTero intraoral scanners can be utilised to efficiently grow practices and attract even more patients.

“I believe in innovation, education and providing access to the mass market. We have over a million general practitioners in the world but less than 10% of them own intraoral scanners. We see this as a huge opportunity and I foresee more investments to push the market to a tipping point where every patient will be scanned every time they step into the clinic,” he stated.

The new iTero Element 5D Imaging System

The new iTero Element 5D Imaging System, which was launched by Align Technlogy prior to IDS 2019, provides a new comprehensive approach to clinical applications, workflows and user experience that expands the iTero Element portfolio.

In addition to all the features of the iTero Element 2 scanner, iTero Element 5D scanner is the first integrated dental imaging system that simultaneously records 3D, intraoral colour and near-infrared imaging (NIRI) images and enables comparison over time using the iTero TimeLapse functionality.

Fu r t h e r m o re , M r. S h a ke d s h a re d that a special feature of the new iTero Element 5D scanner is aiding in the detection and monitoring of interproximal caries lesions above the gingiva without using harmful radiation thanks to its NIRI technology. At the moment, we have carious detection devices readily available but these are not integrated with the complete workflow.

Sometimes this might be the reason why these devices are not fully utilised in a practice. With iTero Elment 5D, we have it with just one scan using the same workflow and you get so much more in return. No one else can do this with just one scan,” he emphasised.

“We are focused on Asia and how we will continue to further penetrate the market.

Hence, we will continue to create and provide the right education and support that fit the needs of all the different countries in the region. We are completely

Driving the digital industry

In this competitive market, Align Technology believes in driving the digital industry for the future.

With new surfaces for abutments and implants, Nobel Biocare has recently announced the start of the Mucointegration™ era in dentistry.

Could you please explain the concept behind it?

Hans Geiselhöringer (HG): So far, the discussion about survival rates of implants, as well as implantology in general, has mainly been centered around osseointegration.

One of the most challenging and neglected areas however has always been the interface between the soft tissue and abutment. With our new Xeal surface technology, which is available for the On1 Base and Multi-unit Abutment, we are now able to provide better soft tissue attachment, which can act as a barrier for microorganisms and protect the underlying bone. In combination with proper maintenance protocols, long-term tissue health and stability is thus secured. This is what we call the Mucointegration™ concept.

HG: Originally, we held our Global Symposium every three years. Considering all the breakthrough innovations we have in the pipeline, however, we saw a need to revise the concept to be able to bring them to more dental professionals worldwide. In addition to our new surface technology, we will also announce a completely new and revolutionary implant line with the Nobel Biocare N1 system as well as demonstrate a promising new technology for implant maintenance in Madrid. Owing to this, we will have many launches in different markets within the

next three years, and so we decided to have in total three global symposia in Europe, North America and Asia. So, everyone will get the opportunity to experience our new breakthrough innovations first hand.

What can participants expect from the upcoming Nobel Biocare Global Symposium in Madrid?

HG: In Madrid, Nobel Biocare will be starting to reshape implant dentistry. Among other things, there will be more information on our surface technology and the phenomenal results we have achieved with the help of our academic partners around the world who supported us through the development. On top of this will be the unveiling of Nobel Biocare N1, a real breakthrough in many aspects of the treatment workflow. In addition to a new biology-driven implant design, this new system features a site preparation method that is completely different from what we used to do in dental implant dentistry.

I am confident that N1 will set new standards for the industry.

The program in Madrid will feature a lot of peer-to-peer presentations by dentists from the best practices around the world who will cover all major areas of implantology. I personally believe risk management and complication management is becoming increasingly important and therefore, training in acquiring the skills and knowledge on new technologies and the latest findings in implantology are crucial.

How does the new implant surface differ from previous ones and how does it work together with Xeal?

HG: When it comes to osseointegration, treatment success with implants that have a moderately rough anodised surface is well documented. We have used our decades-long expertise in this area to develop TiUltra, a new ultra-hydrophilic, multi-zone implant surface

the demand will be even higher this time. Our hands-on training sessions were always sold out at previous events, and therefore we will provide more in order to accommodate more attendees. The global symposia and hands-on courses however are not only designed for customers but also for those who are undecided on our innovations. It is much easier for them to see what they are buying instead of getting told what to buy. The dierences are huge and the best way to demonstrate this is to have them try it and compare to other solutions that are currently available in the market. The advantage of an event like the Global Symposium is that we can reach a wide group of dental professionals, from the young to the more experienced. It is all about showing what our solutions can do for their patients.

The Global Symposium for Asia will be taking place in Tokyo in 2021.

Can you already give us some information about this event?

HG: For the moment, we are focusing on the Global Symposia in Madrid and Las Vegas in 2020. We will provide more information about Tokyo as we come closer to the event. In my opinion, it is very important to hold an event in the Asia Pacific region because we are seeing very good growth there and it is important for us to cater more to the needs of the region than we previously did.

Nobel Biocare is one of the world leaders in the field of innovative implant-based dental restorations.

How does your company plan to maintain its leading position in the industry?

HG: Through our continuous dedication to develop new and ground-breaking innovations that help clinicians to provide immediate function and shorter time-to-teeth, I think the company has taken a big leap forward. The current wave of innovations took us five years to develop and required huge investments in financial and human resources.

I have to say my team did an outstanding job in bringing these innovations to life. We are not just redefining existing solutions but bringing completely new developments to the market. The Xeal abutment surface and TiUltra implant surface were just the beginning of a long pipeline of solutions which we will be launching over the next few months.

But that’s not all. Our new oering is also addressing the entire treatment workflow in order to improve all major steps in implantology, from diagnosis to maintenance.

We always try to push boundaries and look for opportunities to address not only the needs of dentists but also the entire dental team.

Looking at the combination of products such as 3D imaging, planning software and then connecting it to prosthetics, Nobel Biocare has taken it a step further with our DTX Studio software, for example, which is a truly integrated s y s t e m f ro m acquisition of image up to the maintenance protocol.

Another component of innovation is broader than just products involving the entire workflow, hardware, software and consumables.

The patient is the focal point of everything we do here at Nobel Biocare. Real innovation is still possible because of many unmet needs in implant care. It must be backed up by science and hard evidence though. I am talking about meaningful documentation to support the efficacy and safety of the products. That is the most important thing.

I believe we need to better communicate to our customers the real benefits of evidence-based and clinically-proven methods and solutions that are going to help them to provide better care for their patients.

This includes our new surfaces, which address the needs for improved long-term maintenance and better esthetics.

The global implant market is getting increasingly competitive. Where do you see the main challenges and how do you plan to approach them in the future?

HG: The overall global implant market is very healthy with growth rates of roughly 4% in the premium as well as the value sector.

This has been the case for many years and will continue for some time in the future.

While both markets seem to be equally split globally, many customers are now using both premium and value products. We are aware of this and want to serve all needs while, at the same time, maintaining our role as a leading provider of premium products. There is still a high demand in this market segment, as you can witness here in Cologne.

and feedback from clinicians the need for innovation in treating patients better through more predictable solutions.

For Nobel Biocare, Xeal and TiUltra are not just implant surfaces but also part of protocols that are integrated in a much larger workflow. This makes the clinician’s day more organised, more predictable as well as intriguing by providing customised solutions for patients, which is a trend we see globally. I believe many clinicians will use our new surface technology even in simple cases and potentially less complicated cases because it serves as a security blanket. We provide them with the best possible product and they can be assured that they can expect less complications. What can be better than using the most advanced implant with the lowest possible risk?

important strategic imperative for us. We need to develop products, technologies and processes supporting exactly this growth. I would like to emphasise that Nobel Biocare wishes to be universal in terms of clinicians utilising our products from simple to the most complex cases. We want to cater to every clinician’s needs in their journey of providing the best care to their patients in this new era of implant dentistry. DA

For the future, Nobel Biocare considers implant maintenance as an important area in implantology. Today, there is not yet a full solution available for treating periimplantitis. Naturomimetic Rejuvenation of Cracked, Chromatic Central Incisors Using Direct Trilaminar Resin Veneers

26-year-old healthy female presented to my service for aesthetic correction of visual defects that affected her confidence in teeth nos. 8 and 9. Specifically, both horizontal and axial enamel-dentin craze lines or folds unrelated to past sharp dental trauma were salient in the incisal one third of both teeth, extending into the superficial dentin. Additionally, there was a notable splash of chroma affecting the mesioincisofacial aspect of tooth no. 9 with moderate chromatic intensification affecting the incisal two third of both central incisors relative to her Social Six. Hypomineralised streaks and clouds were observed maverick effects in the colour map. The visual appearance of the teeth affected her social and professional confidence in interaction, and a minimallyinvasive solution was sought. Options were discussed including pre-prosthetic teeth whitening and resin infiltration, with the patient understanding that even following custom nightguard whitening and resin infiltration that any residual folds would still need some conservative resin bonding to perfect the surface.

The patient was compliant and completed the custom nightguard bleaching process over a period of just over a month, improving from a baseline shade of Vita 4M2/4R1.5 to Vita 1M1 (upper centrals), 0M3 (lower centrals) and 2M1 (upper laterals) (Figs. 1-3). The chromatic splashes were still notable in the teeth and the patient wished to have a uniform looking tooth with cohesive aesthetics with the rest of the arch (Figs 4-12).

Prosthetic bonding options were discussed including minimal preparation feldspathic porcelain veneers, lithium disilicate veneers and composite veneers. The patient selected to proceed with composite veneers for the reasons of cost effectiveness and predictability of intraoral reparations in the event of chipping or staining.

Procedure

Following necessary restorative procedures to eliminate caries and replace defective posterior restorations, the patient followed a bleaching protocol wherein a custom nightguard was fabricated for both maxillary and mandibular arches. The nightguard had a 2mm gingival margin overlap with cervical model troughing to ensure a hermetic seal for retention of the 10% carbamide peroxide (Opalesence).

The patient whitened her teeth overnight for six weeks, attaining a remarkable lift in value of all her teeth, eliminating most of the unsightly chroma in the incisal two thirds of tooth nos. 8 and 9. Residual chroma affected the mesioincisofacial aspect of tooth no. 8 and the enamel folds were still visible.

The colour map was recorded in a fully-hydrated state prior to the operative procedure and the corresponding candidate composite shades were chosen via the shade button technique (Fig. 13). Following local anaesthesia

and split rubber dam isolation (Non-Latex, Sanctuary Dams) (Fig. 14), a composite veneer preparation was done using a Mani TF-25F diamond bur to a depth of 0.3mm cervicofacially and 0.5mm proximofacially and in the facial two thirds. As a relative reference, Ed McLaren reports that each desired shade change utilising porcelain veneers requires 0 . 2 - 0 . 3 m m 1. E x t r a p o l a t i n g f r o m this, this case desired to eliminate A3 chromatic detail A3 range with a desired A1 target shade, which would require a 0.4-0.6mm reduction.

Crevicular fluid was controlled via packing of a #00 braided retraction cord (Ultrapak, Ultradent) on the facial aspect prior to micro air abrasion with 27 micron aluminum oxide powder (Prep Start, Danville) (Fig. 15).

Tooth nos. 8 and 9 were isolated using a serrated metal strip, and subjected to a total etch technique with 35% orthophosphoric acid (UltraEtch, Ultradent) followed by a scrubbing application of three coats of adhesive (Peak Universal Bond, Ultradent) prior to air thinning and curing with an output of 1200mw/cm2 (Valo, Ultradent) (Figs. 16-17).

Vit-l-escence A1 (Ultradent) and the dentin lobuleanatomycharacterisedusingtheTNTAM1 instrument (SkoolToolz, Hu-Friedy) (Fig. 18).

An area of incisal translucency and opalescent character was applied to the area of incisal dentin irregularity using Vit-l-escence irB and burnished seamlessly into the region (Figs. 19-20). As streaks and clouds of hypomineralisation was desired, visual reference was made to the fully hydrated photograph to confirm the location and concentration of white intensive application (Final Touch, Voco) (Fig. 21).

The final enamel volume was replaced using an achromatic enamel resin (Pearl Neutral, Vit-l-escence) (Fig. 22).

Primary anatomy was defined using an extra-coarse Sof-Lex Disc (3M).

Secondary anatomy was defined using the Mani TC-11F, FO-30F and TR-26F before final polishing using the Double Diamond D-Fine Series (Clinicians Choice) and Diamond Polish Paste (0.5 micron, Ultradent) with a Flexibu disc (Cosmedent) (Figs. 23-33).

Rationale for choice of restorative material

The composite selected for this case is a microhybrid composite with particle size averaging 700nm. The respective enamel and dentin shades are characterised much as they are in nature, with the highly-polishable enamel being achromatic, opalescent and translucent. The dentin shade functions as being both fluorescent and responsible for the primary colour or hue of the tooth leaving the final chroma and value of the tooth to be modulated via the thickness of the achromatic enamel layer.

Vit-l-escence is one of the godfathers of aesthetic composite resin with a time-tested functional and optical chemistry that allows the clinician ultimate control in the delivery of predictable aesthetics. DA

Resin-Modiϐied Glass Ionomer Shines with Unique Formulation and Exceptional Biocompatibility Written by Dr. Paresh Patel and Dr. Apolinar Madrigal

eristore by DenMat is a time-tested material that has received numerous accolades from the dentists who use it. Some have even called Geristore a staple in their practices, thanks to the material’s high degree of biocompatibility and abundant indications for use. Geristore is a self-adhesive, fluoride-releasing, resin-modified glass ionomer that offers ideal strength, a modulus of elasticity, self-adhesion, and low water sorption. This translates to a material that not only adapts in any clinical situation but will also stand the test of time. Geristore’s unique dual-cure, hydrophilic, Bis-GMA formulation makes it ideal for many clinical situations.

Furthermore, independent research has shown that it is exceptionally biocompatible with connective tissue. The dual-cure formula ensures integrity in difficult-to-reach areas of the mouth (Fig. 1).

Clinical case example

The patient presents with carious lesions at the subgingival margins of teeth nos. 20 and 21. After a thorough cleaning, the tooth surfaces were prepared via caries removal (Fig. 2).

The DenMat’s Etch ‘N’ Seal was placed on the prepared tooth surfaces, followed by the application of DenMat’s Tenure MPB (equal parts A/B mixed) (Fig. 3).

Four to six coats are applied to each tooth.

This step, while optional, is suggested to ensure maximal bond strength of the restoration.

Next, the auto-mix syringe was prepared and the intraoral tip was firmly attached.

Geristore was then applied to teeth nos. 20 and 21 (Fig. 4). Light cure was used to set the material and it was finished by using a 12- or 30-fluted bur.

Composite Artistry in Everyday Clinical Practice: Class IV Restorations with BioSmart Restoratives Written by Dr. Nattawit Niyomsujarit, DDS, M.Sc. Operative Dentistry Mahidol University, Thailand

s c l i n i c i a n s , w e a re o f t e n c h a l l e n g e d t o provide optimal aesthetics and function that meet the patients’ expectations. With t h e i n c re a s i n g d e m a n d f o r c o n s e r v a t i v e treatment protocols and prevention of caries, I used the Minimally Invasive Cosmetic Dentistry (MiCD) concept in my clinical practice as it promotes preservation of tooth structure with the “Do No Harm” patient centric philosophy which was introduced when I was studying in Mahidol university.

Therefore, it is important to prepare an individualised treatment plan and select suitable materials with a focus on achieving the desired aesthetics that help increase the longevity of the restorations.

Intraoral examination revealed that the old composite restorations had acceptable shades but poor size and shape.

Tooth no. 11 was larger than 21 and the incisal edge of both central incisors were not harmonised with the patient’s natural lateral incisors. Both teeth responded positive to the vitality test and their periapical status were within normal limit in the radiograph.

The following patient case is a common clinical situation routinely seen in dental practice where the Shofu® range of biosmart composites with its patented S-PRG filler technology was used to showcase composite artistry with the natural layering technique.1

Materials used

Beautifil II universal biosmart composites have the ability to release a unique combination of ions that inhibit plaque accumulation and provide an acid buffer effect to help stabilise pH in the oral environment, hereby decreasing the risk of secondary caries2 while maintaining the aesthetics, physical and mechanical properties of nano-hybrid materials, making it an ideal choice to achieve natural life-like long lasting restorations.

Patient case

A 22-year-old male patient visited my clinic with a chief complaint of poorly filled restorations on his upper central incisors. More than 10 years ago, both his upper central incisors had been restored post trauma with tooth coloured materials (Fig. 1).

The patient was advised that the most suitable treatment plan would be to replace the old restorations with BioSmart tooth coloured restorations using the natural layering technique.

After careful examination and shade confirmation, the following materials were selected for the Natural Layering Technique (NLT): • Composite Materials Dentin Layer - Beautifil II Opaque shade A2O Enamel Layer - Beautifil II Enamel shade T • Adhesive: FL-Bond II • Finishing & Polishing: Super-Snap Xtreme technique kit • Super Polishing for high gloss: Super Buff impregnated buff disk

Restorative approach

Upon removal of the old restorations on tooth no. 11 and 21, around 2/3 of tooth contour was visible in both fractured central incisors (Fig 2).

The labial enamel margin was prepared with a long bevel using a tapered diamond bur. FL-Bond II adhesive was applied in combination with the selective enamel etching technique while the palatal shell was built with Beautifil II Enamel shade T (Fig. 3).

After being completely light cured, the finishing and polishing of the restorations was done with Super-Snap Xtreme kit. The final step of polishing with the SuperBu impregnated bu disk helped to achieve a high gloss surface to match the adjacent natural tooth (Figs 5-6).

Build-up of the dentin layer was done using Beautifil II Opaque shade A2O, keeping suďŹƒcient space for the labial enamel layer (about 0.5-1 mm). In order to achieve a seamless blend between the tooth and restorative margin, the dentin layer was placed to overlap the incisal side of the bevel (Fig. 4).

Conclusion

The above clinical case illustrates the life-like aesthetics that can be achieved through adopting the Minimally Invasive Cosmetic Dentistry (MiCD) concept with BioSmart composite material. Beautifil II composites have a simple shade system with a variety of translucent shades that help to create enamel and dentin characterisations in addition to fluoride release and prevention of plaque accumulation.

These features provide patients with aesthetic restorations and further caries protection, making it a great material of choice for the modern dentist. DA Fig. 4: Build-up of dentin layer using Beautifil II Opaque A2O

The Beautifil II Enamel shade T was used as the final enamel layer and placed carefully to ensure good anatomical contour and surface texture. This method helps to prevent over filling of the restoration and reduces chair time during the finishing and polishing.

Combined Technique for Implant Maintenance Written by Dr. Luca Parisi

ir-polishing is an absolutely indispensable procedure for decontaminating the oral cavity and forms the basis of any primary, secondary or tertiary prevention procedure in dentistry.

It is also effective for the professional maintenance of implant and prosthetic component hygiene. The air-polishing technique provides a user-friendly option for biofilm removal in patients with periodontitis and peri-implantitis. In 1945, air-polishing was first introduced in dentistry when particles of aluminium oxide were used to prepare the oral cavity.

The best materials currently available are prophylaxis powders, more specifically, glycine powder, and non-invasive ultrasonic scalers, such as PEEK (Polyetheretherketone) inserts (Fig. 1).

The deposition of bacterial biofilm, the very aetiology of oral cavity disease, favours anatomical areas that are difficult to reach using home oral hygiene practices, such as the areas underneath fixed restorations. The inflammation caused by bacterial plaque causes the loss of gingival attachment.

Glycine is a non-essential amino acid, odourless, colourless and highly water-soluble substance with very low toxicity, non-allergenic and has a very subtle sweet taste. Glycine is also believed to have an anti-inflammatory, immunomodulating and cytoprotective effect in a number of therapeutic approaches.

Although its exact mechanism of action is still partly unclear, the application of glycine causes the suppression of the calcium-sensing receptor and the inhibition of inflammatory cell activation. Glycine also reduces free radical formation by inhibiting macrophage activation. This substance appears to be very well suited for intraoral use. The non-abrasive glycine powder used with air-polishing devices takes the form of microscopic crystals.

In order to achieve effective control over bacterial plaque, especially in areas that are difficult to reach (such as the interdental spaces), home oral hygiene must be maintained, and patients must be correctly informed of how absolutely essential it is in ensuring the health of oral cavity tissues and maintaining restorative therapy.

The Combi touch unit (Fig. 2) used in the case report described below, represents the best approach for the treatment of implant sites. The Combi touch device combines a multipurpose piezoelectric scaler and air-polisher in a single appliance, affording complete supra- and subgingival prophylaxis. With its “soft mode” feature, the scaler handpiece performs ultra-gentle scaling,

Periodontal disease and decay are transmissible infectious conditions caused by the pathogenic microorganisms present in bacterial biofilms.

The treatment and maintenance of implant sites requires an effective and minimally-invasive treatment that is readily accepted by the patient and that the practitioner considers to be ergonomic and safe for the implant structures (titanium and prosthetic materials).

whilst guaranteeing optimum performance on prosthetic components. The air-polishing handpiece allows for the use of two different types of powder (sodium bicarbonate and glycine), depending on the type of treatment to be performed. This affords the great advantage of being able to use both powders on the same patient with a simple click.

Treatment plan

Eventually, it was decided for the lower restoration to be removed in order to effectively remove all soft and hard deposits (Fig. 6).

Unit maintenance is quick and easy because the powder bottles can be removed without having to switch off the device and an exclusive feature prevents powder clogging. Moreover, it can either be connected to the practice’s normal water supply or used with an external 500 mL bottle.

Case report

A 55-year-old male patient who has been treated by the practice for a number of years presents a number of missed hygiene and check-up appointments, the patient eventually comes to the practice for a cleaning (Figs. 3-5).

His dental status consists of a temporary full lower-arch implant-restrained Toronto bridge and a temporary upper-arch implant-supported overdenture. The physical exam reveals visible redness around most of the implants with the presence of abundant bacterial biofilm, plaque as well as abundant tartar on the lower arch.

A cleaning is therefore performed using: • glycine powder to treat the implants (Fig. 7); • a PEEK insert for ultrasonic scaling to remove the hard deposits from the implants (Fig. 8); • additional glycine to remove any other soft deposits and for polishing.

This treatment approach was applied on both arches (Fig. 9).

The special angle of the 120° glycine powder nozzle facilitates plaque removal, even in cases where the practitioner encounters problems caused by particular anatomical soft tissue structures and the positioning of implants or prosthetic components in difficult-to-reach areas.

The cleaning continues outside of the patient’s mouth with the removal of tartar and plaque from the Toronto bridge using glycine and bicarbonate powders (Fig. 10). As glycine is not abrasive, it does not damage fixed or mobile prosthetic components.

The patient is re-sensitised regarding oral hygiene at home and the importance of regular check-ups and hygiene appointments in order to maintain oral health is explained to him.

The patient is shown how to use home oral hygiene devices correctly. In this case, we recommend a sonic toothbrush, interdental brushes and AirFloss. In this case, all these devices allow for effective and non-traumatic cleaning of difficult to reach interproximal spaces.

For chemical plaque control, we recommend using Chlorhexidine 0.12 % mouthwash twice a day for seven days.

The check-up performed two weeks later revealed a significant

improvement in the clinical indicators. Therefore, post professional maintenance therapy using glycine powder and PEEK scaler inserts was scheduled for every other month.

Conclusion

Combi touch technology allowed the practitioner to effectively treat this complex case of implant restoration.

The device makes it possible for the use of different types of powder to meet different requirements, with the advantage of being able to work ergonomically and reach all areas with ease. Additionally, when using the ultrasonic scaler handpiece, the PEEK insert was found to be an ideal and non-invasive solution for biofilm removal and break-up.

Therefore, the great advantage for the practitioner is the assurance of utilising a full, easy-to-use and minimally-invasive set of instruments for oral hygiene, even in critical cases of gum disease. DA

Dental Technician 4.0 with EASY view 3D

n this day and age, keeping up-to-date is important to dental technicians producing dental restorations using CAD/CAM technology as they know that their way of working is subject to ongoing technical changes. Thus, one has to make the right decisions at the right time.

At Italy-based Guido Testa’s Advanced Dental Laboratory, the team aims to create lasting prosthetics of quality for its clients and their patients, always remaining at the forefront of modern work systems. With passion, we have always endowed ourselves with the most innovative technologies and materials, paying attention to what the market has the best to offer. In the following paragraphs, I will be discussing the latest arrival in our laboratory: Renfert’s 3D video microscope.

Like many other dental technicians, the training in my apprenticeship involved conventional methods such as casting metal crowns using the lost wax technique.

This technique has proven itself over hundreds of years with examples such as the Riace Bronzes, cast about 460 BC.

In recent years, the rapid changes to digitally manufactured restorations using CAM technologies indicate the need for careful quality control to the highest degree possible. For this reason, we have been utilising microscopes or magnifying glasses to enlarge the object. For example, now when I produce dental restorations using conventional methods, I make use of optical aids. Presently, there is an innovation in this field that allows for the production of dental restorations with enlarged object viewing on a screen in 2D or 3D mode.

Adapting to the modernisation of technology

Four years ago, when I first tested a 2D and 3D microscope at Renfert, I immediately thought of the many procedures I could complete in an entirely new way and the ergonomic posture I would benefit from in my daily work routine. I instantly knew that this piece of equipment would be an integral part of my laboratory as soon as it became available.

And that is exactly what happened: I witnessed the modernisation of my trade firsthand and therefore find it quite natural to view the results of my work using the latest technologies.

As with all new equipment, it took me a short while to get used to working with Renfert’s EASY view 3D. My eyes were naturally accustomed to looking at the object in my hands and not the monitor, where everything is also displayed in real time. However, I was willing to take on this challenge and I soon realised that with regular use of the EASY view 3D, I quickly became accustomed to this new way of working. Our brain is very quick to adapt and therefore the transition was not difficult for me.

Advantages of EASY view 3D

Investing in EASY view 3D was worth it as the 3D video microscope proved useful in many different production processes in the laboratory: from the ceramic build-up and finishing, preparation of plaster dies or abutments to handling of laser sintered metals. In addition, the EASY view 3D has allowed me to determine the quality and flaws of the impressions or models and to share pictures or videos of the object with my clients from other regions in order to discuss with them in real time.

Aside from the previously mentioned advantages, the microscope’s focal depth can be adjusted to achieve an ideal view of the inside of the crown, which will help perfect its finishing. As the illumination follows the field of view and does not

cause shadows, the visibility always remains perfectly clear. The 3D approach, w h i c h e n a b l e s o p t i m a l h a n d - e ye coordination, helps with modelling. I am able to use the coloured waxes, designed by my friend, MDT August Bruguera, with great accuracy and achieve the desired effects. We often show the waxup on the screen to the patients and they are often surprised to see an enlarged example of a piece of work specially designed using this innovative technique.

In my opinion, the 3D video enlargement provides the greatest advantage when creating the ceramic build-up. The EASY view 3D makes it possible to re-adjust and build the ceramic material by placing, for example, mamelons in various colours and in different positions. It is now possible to

achieve amazing effects because the smallest details are visible. The three-dimensionality and the focal depth also help when modelling the occlusal surfaces to achieve life-like, anatomical designs.

The dental laboratory may raise objections to the equipment due to its high costs or beliefs that a good dental technician does not need a video microscope to significantly improve the quality of his work.

These arguments are understandable, however the following five important reasons inspired me to acquire the EASY view 3D: 1. I believe in CAD/CAM. The benefits of this digital technology have enhanced my competitiveness over the last nine years, therefore I can see the high added value of EASY view 3D in every processing sequence.

2. I strive to achieve an open and clear communication with my partners. The high resolution images enable me to communicate more effectively.

3. I prefer to work ergonomically for the benefit of my health.

4. The use of the device will underline the professionalism of the work I do and my openness to innovation.

5. I have seen many changes throughout my career and this time I’d like to embrace these innovations as a pioneer.

On a final note, I would like to quote Charles Robert Darwin: “It is not the strongest species that survives, nor the most intelligent, but the ones most responsive to change.” Although this profession has been a part of my life for many years, my thoughts and my heart are open to the changes the future brings.

I have always been willing to invest in my profession in order to be consistent with my desire to live and work well, for myself and for the benefit of the patients entrusted to me by my clients. DA

AOS Congress 2019 Scaled Greater Heights This Edition

he Association of Orthodontists (Singapore) Congress (AOSC) concluded yet another successful edition, reaffirming the show’s position as the must-attend orthodontic event in the Asia Pacific region.

The conference delegates saw a remarkable growth of 20% from last edition of which more than 60% came from overseas.

The best of the best in orthodontics

Outperforming the numbers achieved in its previous edition, over 900 attendees hailing from as far as Hungary and Oman came together to attend the three-day conference and exhibition, and pre and post-congress workshops. The impressive international speakers’ line-up, which saw the likes of keynote speakers, Prof. David Sarver, Prof. Birte Melsen and Prof. Rolf Behrents enriched delegates by sharing detailed case studies and key insights.

“David Sarver, Birte Melsen, Eric Liou, Lee Kee Joon, Monty Duggal were amazing speakers,” shared conference delegate, Marisa Indriati Budiman from Indonesia.

Held alongside the conference, 30 exhibiting companies and over 100 represented brands also came together for the exhibition. A complete event experience

Apart from the conference and exhibition, AOSC also received immense support for its new initiatives. The Residents’ Symposium held on 21st February was attended by over 80 participants where attendees were treated to an afternoon of insightful discussions and a tour of the newly minted National University Centre for Oral Health Singapore (NUCOHS).

Completing their event experience, attendees were treated to an exceptional Welcome Reception with drinks and fun at the S.E.A Aquarium, Resorts World Sentosa. The aquarium which is quintessentially one of Singapore’s must visit attractions provided both local and overseas delegates with a unique experience. Despite the packed conference schedule, fitness enthusiasts and supporters also gathered bright and early on the second day of the congress for the 3rd edition of the fully subscribed run along Gardens by the Bay. Riding on the success of AOSC 2019 and a series of pre-event activities to raise funds for the Children’s Cancer Foundation (CCF), a cheque of SGD 21,000 was pledged and presented to Ms. Neo Lay Tin, Executive Director, Children’s Cancer Foundation during the opening ceremony.

3rd International Team for Implantology (ITI) Congress South East Asia: Strategies for Success in Implant Dentistry

n the 29th and 30th March 2019, the 3rd ITI Congress South East Asia took place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and provided its participants with a high-quality program and a wide range of stimulating lectures and discussions under the umbrella theme “Strategies for Success in Implant Dentistry”.

Around 450 participants from 24 countries came to Kuala Lumpur to enjoy the two-day event. Both international and regional speakers gave insights into their knowledge and discussed the latest trends on implant dentistry. From the paradigm shift in dental treatment through implant treatment of periodontally compromised patients to CAD/CAM technology: the lectures covered important parts of the most current topics and gave valuable input for the application in daily practice.

Some inspiring topics included: Contemporary concepts in extraction socket healing, Monolithic implant reconstructions: Current state of knowledge & future trends, State-of-the-art surgical techniques in partially edentulous implant patients: “How much digital is used nowadays in daily practice?”, Ultra-short 4 mm implants: Clinical case reports of Asian patients and anterior implant aesthetics and the curious link to Botulinum toxin injection.

Aside from looking forward on lectures with exciting topics, participants also submitted numerous entries for the poster competition scientific or clinical abstract (case studies, surgical procedures or therapeutic innovations) on the following: oral implantology, soft tissue regeneration, bone regeneration, multidisciplinary treatments and digital workflow.

38 th International Dental Show (IDS) 2019: Leading Global Dental Trade Fair Underlines Its Outstanding Position

DS 2019, which came to an end in Cologne on 16th March 2019 after five days, more than fulfilled the high expectations of the international industry. As such, the undisputed leading global trade fair of the dental industry once again underlined its exceptional position. The event was able to replicate very good results of the previous show and at the same time realise the ambitious goals for greater international representation and offer higher quality and demand. Overall, the trade fair satisfied exhibitors and trade visitors. With 2,327 exhibiting companies from 64 countries, the number rose once again by 20 suppliers.

They came together with over 160,000 trade visitors from 166 countries. Hence, the overall number of visitors rose by 3.2% and the number of foreign trade visitors by 6%. At the same time, the exhibition space expanded by over 4% (up to 170,000 m²).

Mr. Mark Stephen Pace, Chairman of the board of VDDI, commented: “The motto ‘The sportsmanlike fair competition of IDS’ expressed the strengths of this leading trade fair in six words. The comprehensive and internationally unique offer as well as the extraordinary performance and innovative strength of the industry, combined with the firm intention of all market players to improve continually and seek the success in the direct competition. Everyone, who wants to be successful in the dental industry, faces the performance comparison in Cologne.

Thus, it is no surprise that the level of internationality of IDS has, in the meantime, taken on huge dimensions.”

And Mr. Gerald Böse, President and Chief Executive Officer of Koelnmesse, added: “IDS is a trade fair event in a class of its own and always sets new benchmarks. It manages to surpass the already excellent result of the previous event time after time. Only at IDS, can visitors and exhibitors experience supply and demand at this scope, at this quality and at this level of internationality here in Cologne.”

The dental world of business

The official figures confirm the excellent level of internationality at IDS: 73% of the exhibitors from 64 countries came from abroad, as well as 62% of the visitors from 166 countries from Argentina, Brazil and Chile, to Japan, Korea, Egypt and South Africa, Australia and New Zealand, the whole of Europe through to the USA and Canada. The number of countries of origin thus increased once again by 6%. IDS 2019 recorded significant growth in the number of visitors from Asia (+23.1%), Eastern Europe (+19.6%), Africa (+17%), Central and South America (+14.6%) and North America (+5.3%).

Aside from the level of internationality and quantity of the visitors, an independent survey confirms the event attracted visitors of high quality. Over 80% of the visitors at this year’s IDS were involved in procurement decisions. The decisionmaking competence among the foreign visitors was even higher. Over 49% stated that they were responsible for making procurement decisions autonomously. At the stands, it was reported that all of the occupational groups of the industry

from all over the globe were present. According to the survey, the largest groups came from the dental practices, dental laboratories, dental trade and the dental industry. Schools and universities were also strongly represented. Almost 30% of the respondents were board members, company or plant managers.

Almost 80% of the visitors responded that they were satisfied or very satisfied with the range of exhibition offerings. A good 93% said that they would recommend a good business acquaintance to visit IDS, and 70% of the respondents are already planning to visit the next IDS in 2021.

Dr. Markus Heibach, CEO of the VDDI who was pleased with the outcome of the trade fair said, “The high level of satisfaction of our trade visitors and exhibitors is for us an impressive confirmation of our efforts to make our guests’ stay as pleasant and successful as possible by offering them a cosmopolitan, hospitable and perfect service.”

Social commitment of dentists

Following tradition, the BZÄK Conference of the Aid Organisations also took place at IDS. It is a source of ideas for dental aid projects and for the personal exchange. Around 60 dental aid projects and organisations are currently part of the BZÄK network, which aims to provide mutual assistance and an exchange. The projects provide aid and support at home as well as worldwide in manifold ways.

In Germany, many dentists are very committed to helping people who are socially deprived or in emergency situations in their free time. They treat people without health insurance or offer the aid organisation support in the form of donations in kind or money.

Many dental aid organisations also participate in international projects and help in acute humanitarian situations or after natural catastrophes; they provide assistance in crisis regions or offer the patients dental treatment locally.

IDS 2019 in figures

At IDS 2019, on a gross exhibition area of 170,000 m² (2017: 163,000 m²), 2,327 companies from 64 countries participated (2017: 2,305 companies from 60 countries).

These included 610 exhibitors and 18 additionally represented companies from Germany (2017: 624 exhibitors and 20 additionally represented companies) as well as 1,650 exhibitors and 49 additionally represented companies from abroad (2017: 1,617 exhibitors and 44 additionally represented companies). The share of foreign exhibitors was 73% (2017: 72%). Including estimates for the last day of the fair, over 160,000 trade visitors from 166 countries attended IDS (2017: 155,000 trade visitors from 156 countries), approximately 62% of whom (2017: 60%) came from abroad.

A radiant patient smile with digital case planning

The new SureSmile Aligners from Dentsply Sirona are planned and produced

based on a digital impression and an X-ray image. The newly developed, cloudbased SureSmile Aligner software also uses a patient photo during this process.

This allows the ideal smile to be created as part of the digital treatment plan. Unlike with conventional concepts, dental practitioners keep control of the treatment process at all times. In the SureSmile Aligner software, practitioners can make changes to the plan and thus adapt the systems to the needs of the individual patient.

The new SureSmile Aligner software is an open system and accepts STL files from all intraoral scanners. Simplifying Dental Motion

n 1969, a little workshop at Genova, Italy used to make a special dental drill. One day, Mr. Adolfo Ravali, a business-minded technician, visited and was impressed by the extreme precision and care involved in the handcrafted manufacturing. He soon expanded the design into a more complex device such as a high-speed turbine with air bearings for dental use.

So, discreetly and with limited means, studies and tests for the development of a highly sophisticated turbine were carried out. When the design was successfully completed, the company moved to other premises, founded Tekne Dental and created the TKD trade mark which started a mass production of air-bearing turbines.

In 1970, the very first TKD dental turbine was born. It was the CA72 model which proved extremely popular, reliable and a success. The CA72 turbine produced high speed revolution (approximately 500,00 rpm), increased torque, exceptional wear resistance, extremely quiet and required no lubrication. Hence, TKD manufactured the CA72 for over a decade with thousands of handpieces sold over time. This particular turbine model was so reliable that a few of them are still running until now.

Broadening of product portfolio

The excitement brought about by this success produced new enthusiasm and resources to pursue innovations and develop other devices.

The experience acquired by all the sta, conscious of producing high-level micro- mechanics, has thus permitted TKD to develop a high technological know-how. Soon afterwards, the range of manufactured products broadened, either for the market requirements or for a logical company growth, remaining faithful with the original idea of production

of dynamic instruments for dental use.

Particularly, a great deal of research and development has been carried out for the latest electronic devices, such as the piezoelectric scaler ad the brushless electric micromotor.

Successful operation through technical assistance and service

Nowadays, TKD is proud to be one of the largest independent Italian manufacturers of dental handpieces and exports its products to many countries throughout the world. In order to operate quickly and successfully, the company is organised in such a way that the majority of received orders can be carried out in only two days.

Technical assistance and service on TKD products is assured by the company’s workshop and by authorised technicians, present in each country to which products are exported.

Advantageous in-house production

Additionally, every year TKD invests over 5% in research and new special machinery. One of the main advantages of the company is that it develops and manufactures all products in-house. The R&D department has highly skilled people with necessary proficiency to design complex and high-precision parts.

Many working tools and instruments used for final testing of handpieces have been self-made as they are special and not yet present in the market.

SmileView tool is a computer-generated simulation of how a person’s smile may look after teeth straightening.

Within 60 seconds of taking a smiling selfie using the SmileView online tool on their smartphone or tablet, prospective patients can see what their new smile and straighter teeth may look like, with their own facial features. Giving Back to Society Hair for Hope is Back!

Back for the 17th consecutive year, Hair for Hope is Children’s Cancer Foundation’s signature outreach event the only head-shaving event in Singapore that serves to raise funds and awareness of childhood cancer.

Through the symbolic gesture of shaving bald, we aim to: • Create awareness of childhood cancer in Singapore • Show children with cancer and their families that they are not alone in their fight against cancer • Tell children with cancer that it is OK to be bald • Raise funds and help children with cancer and their families • Build a community of support for children with cancer and their families.

Every shaven head in Hair for Hope represents the understanding by an individual of the ordeals that a child with cancer is subjected to. By volunteering to shave, shavees become CCF ambassadors in helping to raise awareness of childhood cancer among their family and friends. It also provides an opportunity to garner support from the public in the form of donations.

We hope to encourage at least 6,000 participants to join our cause and raise $3.6 million to aid children and families impacted by cancer this year. DA

BIOLASE and TeamSmile Expand Iniঞaঞve of Oral Health Day to Students in Kansas City Public Schools BIOLASE, Inc., the global leader in dental lasers, TeamSmile, the nation’s premier advocacy group that supports life-changing dental care for underserved children and the Sporting Kansas City soccer team hosted an oral health event where nearly 300 kids from four Kansas City public schools received free access to advanced dental care with Waterlase dental lasers. The health day took place on Friday, 26th April from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

The organisations plan to continue partnering together on additional initiatives in the future to further advance dentistry among families and dentists nationwide.
