HOLLYWOOD COMES TO PAARL: MERYL STREEP AND JEFF BRIDGES TO JET IN

Thieves target film set T

he Arboretum in Paarl is slowly but surely being converted into a Hollywood set for a multi-million dollar movie production.

And it is definitely no dinky-toy movie, as Hollywood superstars, Meryl Streep and Jeff Bridges, will be in the leading roles of the film The Giver. Barely had set-builders started work here on the banks of the Berg River, when they fell victim to theft. Iron rods which had been planted to demarcate the building lines of houses to be erected were stolen

over the weekend. These have now been replaced with wooden rods in the hope that they will not be stolen. The set is currently being constructed in the centre of the Arboretum at the North American zone, making the set largely invisible to the public. After having sent out scouts to find a suitable park-like location for the movie, Moonlighting Films approached the Drakenstein Municipality and obtained the necessary permission for the feature film to be shot in the Arboretum. The sets will consist of the facades

of six houses and one complete wooden house. Landscaping and lawn specialists will be working on the existing lawn area over the next few months until the filming commences. Security guards will be monitoring the site 24 hours per day. An environmental control officer will be monitoring activities and ensuring that all regulations are adhered to. The Drakenstein Municipality’s department of Parks, Sport and Recreation will also be monitoring all developments and ensuring that the integrity of the Arboretum is not

compromised. Filming will take place during November for about six days, with some night scenes also being enacted. The Giver is an adaptation of the Lois Lowry novel and will be directed by Phil Noyce. It tells the story of Jonas, a young boy who is living in a perfect world. When Jonas is 12 years old, he is chosen to be the community’s Receiver of Memories. He enters into training with an old man called The Giver. From the Giver, Jonas learns about pain, sadness, war and all the unhappy truths of the “real” world.

He quickly realises that his community is a fake. Confronted with this reality, Jonas faces difficult choices about his own life and future. Currently there is a great deal of secrecy as to where the stars will be staying during their visit to Paarl. Needless to say, once they arrive in the area, they will be surrounded by an army of security personnel. Once shooting is over, the buildings will be demolished and the area will be rehabilitated to its original state, leaving no sign of Hollywood and the star-studded cast who came and sang for their supper here.
