Most city dwellers will tell you that they yearn for a country lifestyle, but giving up the work and conveniences on offer in the big metropolitan areas is almost impossible. Marianne argues that this switch is highly do-able. Franschhoek’s proximity to Cape Town for example. means that before you even really hit traffic, you are already in the city and, it is a lovely country drive, she says. Postcard-pretty mountains, rolling vineyards and clean air make it one of the most beautiful wine valleys in the world and with quality real estate on offer, it is one of the most sought-after addresses in the country, she says. The growth in property values attests to this, says Seeff Winelands principal, Pierre Germishuys. The average house price has grown by almost 170%, from just over R1,2 million in 2004, to almost R3,3 million today,while luxury homes sell for well above this. Sectional title sales prices have grown by 80% from just over R600 000 to over R1,1 million. Buyers from across the globe continue to flock to the village and more than 80% of buyers are still from outside Franschhoek.
