Client Profile + Project Information

The National Geographic Society started in Washington DC in 1888 as a small group of travelers and their patrons in the late Victorian Age, a time when European and American explorers were finding a strong audience at home for tales of adventure and foreign cultures. Shortly after its own founding, the Society started a magazine of its own, which covered a wide variety of world cultures and natural resources, with a particular emphasis on maps and high quality photography. The Society also sponsored the work of many major scientists— Louis and Mary Leakey, Jacques-Yves Cousteau, and Dian Fossey, just to name a few—and later on, provided funding for films and television shows. This dual emphasis on exploration and education has made them a household name, and the golden border of their flagship magazine is a design icon in itself. Their strong media division, now including the NatGeo TV channel, has continued to fund a wide range of scientific and philanthropic efforts around the world. The Society currently has a little under 2000 employees in various offices. In September of 2015, the Society announced a somewhat controversial new partnership with 21st Century Fox, part of Rupert Murdoch’s media empire, to reorganize their publications for a digital age. The Society hopes that it will be able to maintain the integrity of its mission long into the future by taking some risks now and hopefully not losing the loyalty of generations of readers in the process. The infusion of cash that the Murdoch deal brings will allow the National Geographic Society to fulfill an old ambition to open an outpost on the Pacific Rim, and they have identified a site in San Francisco’s Presidio. On the southern side of the Golden Gate, the Presidio began in 1776 as a Spanish fort guarding the entrance to the bay, and it was an area continuously used for the military until 1994, when the end of the Cold War prompted the US Congress to reduce costs by assigning the land to the National Park system (GGNRA). While the Presidio has never actually seen war, millions of immigrants, soldiers, and tourists have had their first or last view of the Bay Area while sailing in the shadow of the pine trees of the Presidio. The Society wishes to develop a mixed-use building here that will house their west coast corporate offices and they have selected the following building. 13 •

site analysis The Presidio of San Francisco is now one of a national park service in the United States. It was originally known as El Presidio Real de San Francisco, a Spanish fort sited by Juan Bautista de Anza in 1776. The park is characterized by natural environment surrounded. It has a magnificent view overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco and the Pacific Ocean.

“ h a t c h” t h e s p a c e

The design of this National Geographic Headquarters was designed with the idea the Hatch. What is the ultimate value of the space? I personally think every space is unique. Some kind of space can not be replaced, can not be forgotten which brought people a special memory when they experiment it. National Geographic is a scientific and educational institution in the world. Its credits include geography, archaeology and natural science, the promotion of environmental and historical conservation, and the study of world culture and history. I want to create an environment that people can learn in each space. Hatch is a process to open and produce a young animal. People who visit the headquarters can “hatch” the space to learn something new from their visiting, gain their knowledge. The potterylike concrete, tree, natural light, shadow and so on, the characteristics can best represent the design concept hatch.

Reception area is the first area that visitors would see. It has a large customized reception counter design with the unique stone and copper. The wall is design with concrete and wood montage. Exhibition _

Exhibition has the suspended panels in order to display the information and national geographic knowledge for visitors to learn. site analysis 737 Folsom Street is located in the center of SOMA, San Francisco. It closes to the public transportation such as muni, BART, light trains, as well as the highway 80. There are many of commercial spaces nearby such as Target, Danny’s, Starbucks, and so on. It is a passive solar building that can utilize the natural resources to have better energy efficiency.

serenity Serenity is from Latin serenus “calm, peaceful” plus the suffix -itas. The first part of the word is the English adjective serene, which means calm and peaceful. The Latin suffix corresponds to our English suffix -ity and has the meaning “quality or state.” The goal of meditation is to reach a state of serenity when your mind is tranquil and perfectly calm. It is hard to believe that the ocean, whipped by winds during a storm, can ever return to a state of serenity, where its surface looks like glass. Serenity senior living community creates a peaceful environment to their clients who lives here. It symbolizes the environment is comfortable and sustainable. The circulation is well-designed for the seniors, not only the hallway met the ADA requirement, but also the whole space has ventilation.

Lounge Area located in the first floor near the lobby. It was right outside the individual units. I decided to have a green wall in my lounge area to create an serenity atmosphere. Material: Green Wall

Independent Units located in the first and second floor. Each unit has the same layout with 466sqft. which includes one full bathroom, build-in closet, washer/dryer, kitchenette, dinning table, private patio with neighbors. I choose to use serenity blue color as the main color to put on the bed board, and some nature elements in materials, such as the pattern on the curtain and the plant decoration. Material: Bamboo Flooring + Low-E Paint

Swimming Pool located in the first floor, it has a beverage bar for people to interact with others. I choose to use bamboo deck boards with the color oiled wood for the flooring. The flooring is FSC-certified. Material: Bamboo + Deck Board (FSC-certified)

Client Profile + Project Information

The client for the Lower Unit of Mariotto’s residence is a middle-aged gentleman who works in the design industry also an instructor in Academy of Art University. He is very artistic, he wants to have his art collections such as paintings, sculptures, and antique that place in his house. He also wants to have the office in his place in order to work at home. The building itself have wide floor to ceiling windows in the west. The overall design of the house will be using a light color and simple furniture in the space. The art pieces will be the focal point in the residence. The project idea was planned to have open space. There are lots of windows in the building. It has amazing nature light come into the indoor. It would have dedicated areas for the client to hang his art paintings and display the sculptures or art pieces. The kitchen is wide-open that space interacts with the dining and living areas.

industrial elegance

Industrial elegance is literally meant an innovation by adding elegance elements into industrial style. It isn’t a secret that wonderful grays and whites work well with the silver element like mental. Therefore I couldn’t resist bringing neutral colors together with a minimal industrial twist. I think both, neutral colors as well as mental, are very modern, rough and industrial on their own but together they somehow give a fresh cozy feeling. Fresh industrial minimal delights to brighten up our homes. In the project, we have significant natural light from the outside. The idea of industrial elegance represents a new living style of wild nature accompany by elegance. It has reflected the traits and characteristics of new generations.

Client Profile

The client, Tony Riviera is a seasoned entrepreneur and owns over 100 restaurants. He plans to open and develop the large marketplace which located in Mission Bay Block 2. “I want the customers to be able to experience the Primo brand in different environments� said by Tony. Tony wants the space turning into mainly three areas: the market for groceries, Italian restaurant, and a prepared food area. He also wants the coffee shops, bakery, wine tasting area, walk-in fridge, 2 ADA unisex bathroom, office for workers to take care of business and lockers, etc in the marketplace. He wants to keep the marketplace simple, casual, affordable, and classy. The marketplace opens from 7 am to 9 pm. They are several ovens in the kitchen for the restaurant. The prepared food area is the largest area in the department. The Italian restaurant serves the pizza, pasta, calzones, gelato, small plate items like salmon salad and tapas. The goal is to attract foodies, hipsters to have them enjoy the local organic food in the high-end relaxing place.

physical change of H2O

Physical changes are changes of state matter. They are solid, liquid, and gas. Water changes from a solid to a liquid: H2O(s)--->H2O(l) = melting. It never actually turns into a different substance. The formula H20 tells us that molecule of water is comprised of 2 atoms of hydrogen and one atom of oxygen bonded together. The marketplace offers a unique design to advertise that the food located here are fresh and clean like water. Space incorporates sustainable appliances and contemporary elements. The large space is divided into three parts: a restaurant, a market, and a prepared food area. Imagine that the marketplace symbolizes the physical change of H2O. From solid to liquid to gas, the design changes from one place to another. Providing a comfortable and relaxing commercial space for the locals to have the unique lifestyle. Customized wrought racks are used as decorative walls to distinguish the areas in the marketplace. Choosing natural wood to warm the space allows for balance with the exaggerated crystal lighting. The customized crystal light creates a refined, high-end atmosphere through the design. The alignment of the crystal lighting also directs way-finding for the customers. The concept embodying the physical change of H2O will represent the space and the food quality through the design.

branding: The logo “BELLACIBO” comes from Italian words: BELLA + CIBO. BELLA means nice in English and CIBO means food in English. I use the font called Palatino Linotype, to have the logo looks simple and fresh. Kraft paper for the packaging is perfect match to have the food looks fresh and clean, and also add the warmth in the interior design.

About Shell

Proportion is the postulate of organic design that seems to hold the closest link to humans. As Wright explains “integral harmony of proportion to the human figure – to have all details so designed as to make the human relationship to architecture not only convenient but charming” should be one of the main characteristics of architecture. As human figure becomes the referential point, not just the design but also sustainability and perseverance come into equations, as important elements in h u m a n - n a t u r e - a r ch i t e ct u r e l i n k.Co exist enc e o f na t u r a l e n v i r o n me n t a n d a r ch i t ec t ur e is an important part of every successful design, according to ARTechnic creatives who designed a holiday villa – Shell – in Karuizawa, Japan, in 2008. The villa fits perfectly into surrounding landscape, similarly to Fallingwater. Reminiscent of a shell, it not only corresponds perfectly with natural surrounding but is also proportioned impeccably to fit the needs of its inhabitants. Its proportion and curved lines stand in contrast to a woodland, but nonetheless Shell’s presence is balanced against both surroundings and human presence. As designers contend “by isolating living space from the wilderness, and upgrading its quality as a shelter, the house will be protected from nature and will provide a comfortable environment. With this, the house will be taken care of and used frequently and continuously. 111 •
