FALL BEGINS

Service

With the formation of Best in Class Technology Services (BCTS) and the restructuring of P1’s Service Division as one of the three cornerstones of the BCTS network of companies – the others being Rieck Services and Vulcan - opportunity has knocked, and several P1 associates have answered the door.

Phil will now serve as President of P1 Service, and although he says his role doesn’t change a lot, he will take on certain responsibilities concerning the companies acquired to grow the BCTS Midwest region, anchored by the hub of P1 Service, LLC.

“In the last few years, we fundamentally changed how we did Service, and that has brought significant growth and opportunities,” Phil said. “And it has paid dividends as evidenced by the dollar volume Service does today, with $93 million in revenue for 2021, and $105 million projected revenue for 2022.”

“And that provides opportunities for other people within the organization.”

One of the key tenets of the Best in Class Technology Services (BCTS) formation is growth, and with growth comes opportunity.

Phil Nehring has been with P1 for 30 years. He started with P1 founding company AD Jacobson as a technician in 1993, shortly before the merger of AD Jacobson and Huxtable, which would later become P1.

“In the last few years, we fundamentally changed how we did Service. Now, we are positioned to build a much larger organization, perhaps coast-to-coast, border-to-border."

“I have been fortunate enough to be here for the progressive changes that have happened and to be surrounded by good people,” Phil said. “This provided opportunities for me to advance my career here, and that’s what you hope for – an opportunity.”

“This is truly a transition time,” Tony said. “There is a huge growth opportunity with P1 Service and the companies associated through BCTS. We have a goal to significantly grow our team over the next couple years.” Tony will report to Phil Nehring once the transition is complete. Some of his overall responsibilities for all of P1 Service include:

Veteran HR Expert Tony Groce Named P1 Service HR Manager

Growth demands an increase in your human capital, and P1 Service needed a strong HR expert to manage the human resources efforts.

Facility Maintenance Operations (FMO) Supervisor Tony Groce fit the bill. Prior to taking the FMO role in 2019, Tony had more than 20 years of experience as an HR supervisor.

Earlier this year, Tony was chosen to fill the role of P1 Service Human Resources Previously,Manager.Tony’sfocus was managing the HR efforts for the FMO teams. In his new role, he will lead the charge toward managing future personnel growth for P1 Service as a company, including existing offices as well as future P1 Service office locations, while still devoting time to FMO as needed.

“As we look to bring on more offices in the Midwest region of P1 Service and beyond, we need Tony’s expertise to manage the HR challenges and opportunities that come with it,” Phil said.

Tony will continue to support FMO HR needs along with all of P1 Service.

The companies joining BCTS all have a myriad of fleet vehicles that may be Ford, GM, RAM and others, and part of Mike’s job is to look at what vehicles are being used by which people, and assess if these are the appropriate fit, or if changes need to be made.

Mike explained.

“We rationalize what the ideal truck and upfit types are, and how we can put those vehicles into the fleet for the lowest cost.”

Even though Mike Mosakowski has only been with P1 since 2021, he’s no stranger to logistics or building relationships.

Inventory Assessment

Mike explains that part of this process is an assessment of the current fleet and understanding how the vehicles are used.

“I’ve built relationships with a network of dealers who know to call us when vehicles become available, even if it’s only three or five at a time,” Mike said. “I may take some, I may not take others, but they call me first.”

“I’ve worked in logistics and delivery - including air, ocean, warehouse distribution and final-mile freight delivery - for many years, most recently at CEVA Logistics which is an international shipping and logistics company” he explained. “I’m familiar with trucks, fleet, inventory, and building relationships from the consumer side.”

That may include new vehicles, or calls from vendors like Knapheide with tip-offs to recently upfitted vehicles. An "upfit" is a set of vehicle accessories or augmentations for an existing vehicle that are customized to the worker's needs.

Mike’s talent for logistics and relationship-building have come in handy at P1, and this summer he was promoted to Best in Class Technology Services (BCTS) Corporate Fleet Manager, where he will take on the big job of analyzing, standardizing, and integrating a mixed fleet belonging to the various service companies that make up the BCTS family of facility solutions providers.

“With the used vehicle market being red-hot, there is also a need to understand at what age and mileage vehicles should be cycled out and replaced, to gain maximum re-marketing value,”

The largest hurdle, which anyone who has tried to buy a car lately knows, is the sheer shortage of vehicles. But Mike has already put his people skills to work, building relationships with vendors so he can collect a little at a time when vehicles become available.

Relationships, like fleet, should undergo regular services to make sure they are still roadworthy. ”

Phil emphasizes that technical skill can be taught, but there are characteristics he looks for in those who would pursue leadership roles. Another goal Mike will work toward in the next couple years is getting a more standardized fleet. That means analyzing what brands most vehicles will be, along with how vehicles are procured and put into service. Part of this process will be implementation of a fleet management company partner to manage platforms for vehicle onboarding, maintenance, fuel, towing, registration, accident management, and Miketelematics.saysoneof the things he is most looking forward to in his new role is building something new, and creating a streamlined program that doesn’t yet exist for the new entity of BCTS. That includes developing a “playbook” for fleet integration that provides a roadmap to bring an acquired company’s fleet into the BCTS Fleet with all steps and processes detailed. “That integration will generate more negotiating power for vehicles and services, reduced costs, higher levels of service to vehicle operators and business leaders, and a standard process,” he said. “My very first college play was a sack against Texas at home, so that was definitely memorable,” Kyle recalled. “But the highlights of playing college ball were the people I met and the bonds I formed through the hard work of practices and the thrill of big games.”

From Crunching Quarterbacks to Crunching Numbers

As long as he can remember, Kyle Ball has loved football. Even before he was allowed to play organized tackle football, he could often be found outside in his Prairie Village, KS, neighborhood, playing pick-up games with the neighbor kids. In elementary school, he listed playing college football as a life goal. During his senior year of high school, several universities came knocking, including the University of Kansas and Kansas State.

“I chose K-State because they had a great program and I was excited to play for coach Bill Snyder,” Kyle said. “Playing football at K-State was a dream come true and I have memories that will last a lifetime.”

When he received his Bachelor’s Degree, he still had scholarship eligibility left, but not enough to cover the full MBA he was considering.

“I needed something I could complete within a year and K-State had just started offering a new program in Data Analytics,” Kyle said. “Data is really big right now and I’ve always loved numbers and solving problems, so I decided to go for it.”

Even though football was a huge part of his college experience, earning a degree was the primary goal. “At first I wasn’t sure what I wanted to study so I tried Engineering and Political Science before finally deciding to major in Finance,” Kyle said.

“I really miss playing football, but being able to teach kids and see them perform the things I have taught them in a game is really rewarding. It’s exciting to be part of the game again. I really enjoy seeing all the strategy that goes into it.” Kyle also stays active by playing sand volleyball and pickle ball and belongs to several leagues and organizations in the area.

With the right information, it can be possible to identify things such as top customer markets, and other architecture, engineering, and construction companies whose projects have been most successful. The ultimate goal is to define trends and patterns in the industry from past results to provide tools for decision making in the future.

Data analytics deals with looking at past historical data and information and process ing it is such a way that allows you to identify things you wouldn’t normally see by just looking at the numbers.

Outside of work, Kyle has returned to his football roots by helping coach at Gardner Edgerton High School.

“People and systems have changed, as well as the way information has been gathered and stored over the years, so figuring out how to fill in those gaps is always tough. But working at P1 Group is a unique opportunity for me to show what I can do with the data, and how this information can help the company make more informed business decisions down the road.” 

On the Sidelines

During his time at K-State, Kyle became good friends with P1 Vice President Steve Smith’s son, Wyatt Hubert. When Kyle mentioned his desire to come back to the Kansas City area, Steve offered to pass his resume around to people he knew in the industry. His resume ended up in the hands of P1 Service President Phil Nehring, who recog nized a need for data analytics at P1 Group.

Kyle says one of the biggest challenges he faces is gaps and inconsistency in the available information.

Kyle's first job took him on site to a project in Nashville, TN, and although he learned a lot, he was also putting in a lot of hours and decided to make a change.

This year, the Safety team presented a check for $27,000 to family of Jay Brown who lost his life in a trench collapse in 2021. Jay’s wife, Lynn, and twin sons, Justin and Wesley, were able to visit P1, meet the team, and share memories of Jay, who was known to some of our P1 associates. TINY NEW FACES
