ADDED VALUE Expertise and Convenience: At Your Service P1 Group Offers Value-added Ship and Repair Circuit Breaker Service

When that circuit breaker goes out and the cost of all-new gear replacement is not an option, P1 Group has a convenient circuit breaker rebuild service that could save customers thousands of dollars. Electrical Preventative Maintenance (EPM) Manager Jeff Gardner says circuit breaker shipping and rebuilding is a service not commonly offered by many companies. P1 Group is able to offer it after hiring Electrical Service Technician Nate Boettcher, who is particularly skilled at this type of rebuild.

customer, the breaker is rebuilt and shipped back to the sender. While the service is in its infancy, P1 Group has already conducted one rebuild for Central Plains Cement in Sugar Creek, MO, and is looking to expand the service immediately to customers across the U.S. “The primary market is going to be any organization with aging infrastructure and obsolete breaker types,” Jeff said.

“When one of their breakers fails, the choice will be to either replace the “This service is predominantly applicable where businesses are faced with a switchgear and breakers, which is very costly, or have the obsolete breaker circuit breaker that has failed in obsolete gear, and a new breaker will require rebuilt to be redeployed into service.” new gear,” Jeff explained. Jeff says this will predominantly apply to circuit breakers 400A and larger. “Rather than taking on the immense expense of total gear replacement, “Some of these new circuit breakers can exceed $100K, with most ranging the customer can send the breaker to P1 Group to be rebuilt to manufacturer from $20K-50K,” Jeff noted. “The cost of rebuilding a breaker will be a specifications.” fraction of the overall cost of gear replacement and new breakers.” The process is simple. Construction to Service:

Associate Profile on St. Joseph Service Tech Aaron White

“The Expertise of Many, The Power of One” is the philosophy behind P1 Group, and St. Joseph Pipefitter Journeyman Aaron White is one associate who has truly embraced this concept during his employment. Aaron started his career as an electrician and was hired at P1 shortly after the opening of the St. Joseph, MO, division in 2012. While the office was trying to get up and running, Aaron was temporarily assigned to Saint Luke’s Hospital to help in the maintenance department, but after a few short months, he was brought back to St. Joseph to work in electrical construction. Aaron had been considering taking HVAC classes at the local technical school so he could work on his equipment at home. When he mentioned that to service manager Adam Collier, Adam suggested he make the switch to the P1 Group service department. “I wasn’t sure what it was all going to entail, but I wanted to do it bad enough that I left the electrical trade and started a new apprenticeship,” Aaron said.

Even though Aaron left electrical construction behind, he doesn’t regret where he started. During his time as an electrician he worked for different contractors in town, from big industrial to smaller mom and pop shops, so he was able to see wide range of electrical systems, including high- and lowvoltage and controls. “That background has helped me tremendously with the working knowledge of electricity, and provided a good basis to move into HVAC,” Aaron said. The service trade requires a broad spectrum of expertise, and smaller markets like St. Joseph need versatile technicians who know the basics for a lot of different equipment. “Since switching over to the service side, the list of equipment I have been exposed to seems to be never ending,” he said. “Even though I may not be a master of one area, I feel like I know the fundamentals for a lot of different things. Having experience with such a variety of systems has made me a well-rounded technician which allows me to provide service to a wide range of customers.”

“Working for P1, I’ve noticed there are so many different people with so many different skill sets that are willing to work through a problem with you. From a technical aspect, it is nice to know I have that kind of support.” -Aaron White, St. Joseph Service

Aaron says he never feels like he is out on a limb when he does have to work on specialized equipment because he has the support of additional specialized technicians not far away in the Lenexa division.

“Because of his desire to learn, Aaron has developed a tremendous skill set but he also has those intangibles like work ethic, leadership, and customer service. Aaron has all the qualities that make a great service technician and we feel fortunate to have him as part of our team,” Heather said.

“Working for P1, I’ve noticed there are so many different people with so many different skill sets that are willing to work through a problem with you. Even in Aaron’s short time in HVAC, he has acquired a vast amount of From a technical aspect it is nice to know that I have that kind of support,” expertise, making him one of the many assets behind “The Expertise of said Aaron. Many, The Power of One.”  Having that support has given Aaron the confidence to tackle any challenge that presents itself and this quality brings high praise from St. Joseph Division General Manager, Heather Richards-St. Clair.

PROJECT HEALTHY BUILDINGS: Bi-Polar Ionization Adds Another Level to Cleaning Indoor Air There’s nothing better than that extra-fresh smell in the air near waterfalls, beaches, and immediately following a thunderstorm. But what you’re actually experiencing are the effects of an ion-rich environment naturally having cleaned the air, giving it that inexplicable “fresh” smell. As part of the Healthy Buildings initiative, P1 Group continues to provide customers with options to create healthier spaces within their facilities by concentrating on ventilation, air purification, and surface cleaning. As people are returning to office spaces, schools, and facilities this fall with heightened concerns about clean air, P1 Group has added bi-polar ionization to our menu of healthy building services. According to Vice President Rusty Roderick, bi-polar ionization is an air cleaning method that has been around for many years. “Bi-polar ionization isn’t new, but has recently gained attention again due to its ability to inactivate viruses in the time of a pandemic,” Rusty said. Here’s how it works: • Outdoor air comes into your building, and the oxygen molecules flow over specially designed bi-polar ion tubes.

An energy field converts these molecules into positively and negatively charged ions, which travel into occupied spaces.

The ions seek out oppositely charged bad air particles, Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), and odors. When they combine, they break down and fall out of our breathing range to reduce contaminate levels. One advantage to bi-polar ionization is the clean ions produced can travel into all spaces, even spaces you can’t see, cleaning the air everywhere. For customers who are already using UV-C treatments, Rusty says the two work even better together - a one-two punch.

“In many scenarios, a hybrid approach is the best option, which utilizes the UV-C technology at the equipment level and bi-polar ionization at the ductwork level to distribute cleaner air into the space,” Rusty said. Rusty notes prices for these installations vary by each customer’s needs, but P1 Group has detailed information available to help customers understand the cost for their facility. For more information, a copy of P1 Group’s COVID-19 Healthy Building Strategies and Solutions can be found on the Hub. 

Monday, September 14, is the official date for all P1 office associates to return to working in the office full time. Please note there are special circumstances regarding requests to work from home after the office fulltime return date. All other COVID-19 safety measures continue until announced otherwise. Due to the open-space setup in Lenexa which may deter social distancing for some departments, supervisors may implement office/home rotations. Ask your supervisor for more information.

Special circumstances may include: • Households with virtual or hybrid schooling • Households with a lack of child daycare, before/after school childcare, or eldercare • Households at high-risk for COVID-19 health complications A work-from-home request process is in place. If you have questions about returning to work or wish to make a request, please contact HR.

P1 HAPPENINGS Seems Fishy: Accounting Clerk Julie Metzler brightens up the Lenexa Accounting department by bringing in her betta fish “Moonshine” (actually named when Kollin Knox jokingly asked if the fish’s former Mason jar home was a jar of moonshine. It’s reasonable – accounting can get stressful!). So Moonshine (aka Mr. Moon), comes in to the Lenexa office with Julie a few days a week. Julie chose him for his red-and-white P1 colors!

Filling the Pipeline: Congratulations to Kansas State University Senior Tyler Collins, winner of P1 Group’s annual Construction Science Scholarship! Each year P1 gives the award to a promising student in the Kansas State University Construction Science program, fulfilling our commitment to help fill the pipeline of talented construction and trade workers. A Wichita native, Tyler grew up working for a residential contractor and engineering firm, which sparked his interest in construction science at an early age. During his time at K-State, he has been involved with many student organizations, including Mechanical Contractors Association of America (MCAA) and Associated Schools of Construction (ASC). “Thank you for supporting me and other students like me at K-State,” Tyler said. “Heading into my final year in the program I firmly believe it was the right choice for me.” Tyler plans to seek work in the Wichita, KS, area after graduation this spring.
