SINGLE SOURCE Creating Comprehensive Customer Solutions, One Trade at a Time

P1 Group Brings Single-Source Advantage to University of Kansas Health System

“Success favors the prepared.” This famous philosophy from biologist Louis Pasteur is the reason P1 Group has all trades, including mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and technologies, working to create single-source solutions for The University of Kansas Health System (TUKHS). P1 Group’s Facility Maintenance Operations (FMO) division has been building a partnership with TUKHS since 1999. Over time, in addition to full-time facility maintenance, P1 Group has also provided our construction services, including mechanical, HVAC, sheet metal, plumbing, and low voltage, along with service and preventative maintenance. According to Vice President Dave Beebe, having full-time facility maintenance experts on site has led to additional opportunities for P1 to bring more capabilities to the table. And P1 Group’s preparedness to not only provide multiple trades, but also provide innovative solutions to meet various challenges, has led to an even more robust partnership between P1 and the many TUKHS facilities.

Project Manager Eric Affolter says P1 Group’s plumbing division has been working directly with the hospital since 2019 to identify and replace existing cast iron waste pipe with more efficient PVC pipe. In 2019, P1 was asked to step in and supplement an electrical contractor at TUKHS who had fallen behind on a fire alarm project. General Foreman Harold Green and Project Manager Alex VanLeeuwen got the project back on track and completed in the timeline required. “Our team performed great under pressure,” Operations Manager Rick Drake said. “Everyone was very happy with the work P1 Group completed in a short period of time.” This success led to P1 winning the much larger Cambridge Tower project with JE Dunn Construction, with a contract value of $6.9 million. The scope of work includes tenant fit-out of the 8, 9, & 10th floors, and major mechanical and electrical modifications to the 12th floor mechanical equipment.

A few recent examples include mechanical and electrical construction, electrical preventative maintenance, and technologies.

P1 Group was also awarded the low-voltage package for the Tower, which will include Commscope Systimax Structured cabling; expansion of the Axis/ Milestone CCTV system; C Cure Access Control performed with Siemens; extension of Vocia Paging system; nurse-call system with Hill Rom; and lighting control integrated with P1 Electrical. P1 Group provides Building Technologies and MAC services (moves, adds and changes) work to three TUKHS departments: TUKHS Healthcare Information and Technology Services; TUKHS Security Department; and TUKHS Facilities. The systems provided include (but are not limited to) structured cabling, paging intercom system, CATV, nurse call, access control, and maintenance of the surveillance CCTV system. Building Technologies Senior Project Manager Jeff Dallas says part of P1 Group’s continued success in obtaining technologies work is due to the longstanding trusted relationship between TUKHS and Building Technologies Lead Foreman Mike Gordy.

P1 Group’s strong relationship with TUKHS extends to the general contractors we work with there as well. P1 was recently awarded phases 1 and 2 of the Bell Café Renovation project - a renovation of the cashier (‘point of sale’) area of the café, often referred to as the “grab and go”. “P1 landed this project due to our strong relationship with Turner Construction at TUKHS,” Project Manager Brady Kyle explained. “This is the same story for the phase 2 portion of the project that we will be starting in a few weeks.” The project employs all trades. P1 is performing the mechanical, plumbing, electrical, and low voltage scopes on both phases. Brady says the scope included demolition of no-longer-needed existing plumbing piping in the area and the demolition of existing dual duct box an associated pneumatic controls tubing, which was replaced with a new VAV box with electric controls. P1 also replaced existing grilles and diffusers.

“Our Lead Foreman Mike Gordy has worked on the TUKHS main campus performing these services for more than 10 years,” Jeff said. “He has anywhere from two to four technicians performing service on a daily basis, with additional techs performing low voltage construction services.” “Mike is the face of P1 for the low-voltage service. They all know him well and feel comfortable with the work his team does.” On the Electrical Preventative Maintenance (EPM) side, P1 Group came up with a safer solution to maintenance on the hospital’s 5k switchgear. EPM Manager Jeff Gardner explains that the work has historically been performed by another EPM contractor. When that contractor was no longer working out, P1 was the first call, and the team was able to step in on short notice.

“With the extensive opportunities across TUKHS facilities, it’s critical to keep the momentum going,” Dave Beebe noted. That’s why P1 Group put Sales Manager Joe Chabot in place as a full-time account manager dedicated to the multiple TUKHS facilities.

“The previous contractor opened and racked out the 13.8kv feeder breaker on energized bus, which is a tremendously dangerous process,” Jeff said.

Joe works on-site at TUKHS, providing ongoing support and paving the way for P1 Group to address more opportunities as they arise.

Within minutes of walking the project, lead EPM technician Clint Hines devised a new switching procedure that eliminated the dangerous need to rack in/out on hot 13.8kv bus.

Joe spends time working with TUKHS project managers on all P1 Group provided services, as well as property managers at the various TUKHS locations, to assess needs and partner with the University of Kansas Health System to see how P1 Group can step in to fill them.

“The critical takeaway here is that Clint dramatically improved the safety of the project by eliminating the greatest hazard, while also reducing the hospital’s risk exposure,” Jeff noted. Jeff says P1 Group has been selected to perform several larger EPM projects in the near future.

“We haven’t historically had as much electrical work here, but we’re starting to close that gap,” Joe said. As P1 Group continues work with TUKHS, Joe says both parties will see advantages, including faster response time, savings on price, and above all, a solid, trusted partnership. 

P1 Group is investing even further in our relationship with TUKHS by putting Sales Manager Joe Chabot in place as a full-time account manager dedicated to the multiple TUKHS facilities. Joe works on-site, providing ongoing support and paving the way for P1 Group to address more opportunities as they arise. 2

SAFETY FIRST: P1 Group Earns Top Safety Award from Mechanical Contractors Association of America From left: Vice President Don Campbell; Safety Director Greg Sweeney; President Kollin Knox When every associate - from executives, to foremen, to project managers and field personnel – consistently dedicate themselves to the company’s safety culture every day, it gets noticed. Innovation and associate buy-in are just two of the reasons P1 Group was recently awarded the highly competitive Safety Excellence Award from the Mechanical Contractors Association of America (MCAA) and CNA Insurance. “It is a fiercely competitive program in the category of ‘over 1M man hours worked’, which results in only the best of the best competing for the awards,” MCAA Director of Safety and Health Peter Chaney said. “Participants are required to describe their respective safety programs in detail, why they believe they deserve the award, and how they achieved safety excellence.”

Incident Rate, OSHA Recordables, and Hours Worked. If there are any recordable incidents, they are reported along with the corrective action plan so associates throughout the company can learn from them. P1 Group’s Safety Division even came up with a way to spread safety awareness to the families of our associates through the annual P1 Group Safety Calendar, made solely from art by kids related to our associates. Children ages K-8th belonging, or related, to P1 associates, enter their hand-drawn artwork for a chance to be featured in one of the 12 months.

The Safety Awards Selection Taskforce carefully evaluates each submission looking for safety leadership, an advanced safety culture, effective leading indicators of safety performance, and innovative safety initiatives that helped the company achieve such a high degree of safety excellence. P1 Group is no stranger to Safety awards, having won this award twice, in 2007 and 2014. P1 Group Vice President Don Campbell says one reason is P1 associates’ consistent immersion – and buy-in – to the program. “What sets P1 Group apart is our leadership, including foremen and project managers, who walk and talk our safety culture every day, encouraging all associates to understand it and put it into practice – no excuses.” Don notes one way to help field personnel feel ownership of the safety program is transparency with numbers. “We update the field monthly during safety talks and at project sites with critical numbers, like Incident Rate, so they always know where the company stands,” Don said. In addition to transparency with numbers is transparency with accidents. P1 Group’s Safety Division sends out a monthly APB that includes that month’s

Congratulations to the P1 Safety Team and all associates who put the P1 Group tagline “Safety First…Quality Always” into play every day. 

Associate Profile on Beth Martens

“I’m pretty sure I have creative Attention Deficit Disorder because I want to do it all.” These are the words of Marketing Proposal Specialist Beth Martens, and while those who know her work would never call it a “disorder”, we think she just might be able to do it all. Creativity is in Beth’s blood, coming from an artistic family. Her mom was a professional seamstress, which is where Beth mastered the art of sewing

and fabric. This skill set has ultimately made Beth the P1 Group Marketing Department’s swag guru, where she has significantly improved our promotional apparel capabilities. However, her true passion begins, and ends, with illustration. “I have always liked to draw,” Beth said. “I was awarded 2nd place at the Missouri State High School Art Show my senior year and went on to the University of Kansas to pursue a degree in Visual Communications.” Although she had to leave after three years due to financial hardship, Beth began another of her life’s greatest projects: Her family.

“I got married and started a family, then went to work for Gear for Sports in the QA department because I had sewing experience and knowledge of fabric,” Beth explained. With more creative support from her brothers, one a movie visual effects professional and prominent sculptor, and the other a professional painter (of the fine arts variety), Beth got even more into design. “I started producing a small children’s magazine through my church,”

Beth said. “I did all of the illustrations and my brother taught me Quark and Photoshop so I could do the layout.” Over the years, Beth has had a series of jobs, from layout artist to working at Target. When the 2008 financial crisis hit, Beth found herself needing a more financially viable job to help support her family, and that’s how she found P1. “My son played baseball with P1 Group Executive Vice President Phil Nehring’s son, and my husband and I became friends with Phil and his wife Rebecca,” Beth said. “Phil talked about what a great company P1 was, and encouraged me to try to get a job there, so I watched the openings for a while.”

FUN FACT Beth’s brother Jim has done some pretty well-known sculptures, three of which are prominently displayed around Lawrence, KS: The mascot for the Haskell Indian University which sits at the entrance; the mascot for the Free State High School on the high school campus; and a sculpture of Langston Hughes at the Langston Hughes Library for Children.

In 2012, a service coordinator job opened up and Beth took the opportunity. “I enjoyed working with the techs and learned to really respect the job they do, and I think I got to be a decent dispatcher,” Beth said. But every creative knows a good creative can’t be kept down, and Beth’s eye was always on the Marketing side of P1, hoping to join the department and bring her creativity to the table. “I had this creative side that just wasn’t being fulfilled, and I really missed using those creative skills in my day-to-day job,” she said. When a position opened up in Marketing in spring 2019, Beth applied, and the rest is history. According to Marketing + Communications Manager Victoria Hoffman, Beth has been an asset to the Marketing department in multiple ways. “Bringing Beth into Marketing has not only given the department the benefit of her artistic creativity, but also a stronger connection between Marketing and Service,”Victoria said. “Beth’s relationships with the service techs she worked with over the years have paved the way for more collaboration between Marketing and Service.” Fine art is what you’ll catch Beth doing during most of her free time. Her favorite mediums include illustration, watercolor, and dimensional “found” metal art. “I started out drawing with pencil and colored pencils. During my second go at college, I started working with watercolors and really enjoyed that,” Beth said.

THE ART OF SHARING YOUR GIFT With a strong belief that a handmade gift is the most personal kind of gift, Beth has made countless watercolors and art pieces for others. “My mother taught me at a young age the value of handmade gifts - that when you make something for someone, you are giving of yourself as well, so if I have time, I try to make gifts, either art or sewing,” Beth said. Her work is so impressive, she’s begun taking on some commissioned work. “It’s been a new mindset for me because I always just want to do things for people,” Beth said. “Ultimately, my goal is to make prints and get an outlet to sell them as a retirement income.”

“I have always had a fascination for metal art. I went to Sedona Arizona and was just amazed at this large horse sculpture that was made entirely out of found/junk items,” Beth recalls. “I started picking up metal pieces around the office and have created several pieces.” “I create things for which I’m passionate about the subject matter. I’ve enjoyed portraiture, and I’ve discovered a love for painting architecture,” Beth said. “I enjoyed traveling to England so I like all things British. I also like painting flowerpots - I love a good terra cotta pot! I do some pet portraits and I love drawing children.” At the end of the day, Beth always returns to her two basic favorites. “I love working in watercolor. It’s quick and fresh and you can get some nice effects once you understand the medium. I love the transparency of the paint and the way it spreads and flows on the paper,” Beth said. “Of course my first love is pencil drawing and I will always keep doing that.”

TIME WITH FAMILY

P1 Group is glad to have benefited from Beth’s many talents, from dispatch to marketing, and we look forward to seeing more in the years to come. 

“When my kids were growing up they were all into sports so we spent a lot of time at the ball park. I enjoyed going to the symphony with my younger two when they were in town, but now that they’re grown, we enjoy traveling,” Beth said. “We have been to England, Daytona Beach and Colorado in the past three years.”

National and international trips with her family - husband Joel, sons Aaron and Josh, and daughter Sam – continue to inspire Beth’s work as well.

  The P1 Group Lawrence office got some new artwork on the walls just in time for a fabrication shop tour with guests from JE Dunn Construction and The University of Kansas Health System. The giant wall decals lead into the two Fabrication Shop entrances. Additional photo prints and signage have been added to various wall spaces with more to come. Guests from the tour expressed their appreciation and told P1 Group executives how impressed they were with our shops.

P1 HAPPENINGS

 Congratulations to Ted Lunn, Lenexa Warehouse Foreman. Ted is retiring after 35 years of service to P1 Group, and we wish him all the best!  Calling your kids! It’s Safety Calendar competition time. The P1 Group Safety Committee is looking for young artists to decorate the calendars for us. The theme of the calendar is “What does work place safety mean to us?” Entries should be drawn and colored on an 8 ½ X 11 inch piece of blank white paper (horizontal). Please include P1 Group Inc. or P1 Group logo somewhere in the picture. This contest is available to all children grade K-8th. Artwork should be submitted to Cheri Totta in the Lenexa office by October 31st, 2020

 1,000 Meals for Neighbors in Need: One way P1 Group continues to support the communities in which we live and work is through “pop-up” swag sales, where P1 Group associates can purchase limited swag featuring a one-of-a-kind design. The purpose is not only to keep our people looking good in their P1 gear, but to create a platform by which a portion of the proceeds benefit a charity of the company’s choice. This year, P1 Group played on our greatest strength for the specialty swag design, which featured our tagline “The Expertise of Many, The Power of ONE”, along with a representative list of P1 Group’s many single-source capabilities. The charity was Meals on Wheels, and shirt sales raised $2,500. P1 Group matched the amount, totaling $5,000 in donations. Every $5 covers all of the food and operational costs to provide one meal for a homebound neighbor, according to Meals on Wheels. This means P1 and those who donated helped provide 1,000 meals! Way to go!
