Did You Know?  The electrical fab shop recently relocated within the building, increasing fabrication space by about 5,400 sq ft.  The sheet metal fab shop can manufacture a standard length of duct in about 30 seconds with its coil line equipment.  The pipe fab shop can work with almost any material and fabricates pipes as large as 60 inches+ - big enough to walk in!  The fab shop houses a 23,000 sq ft tool shop, home to tens of thousands of tools.

Project Profile: Research Medical Center/Central Plant Technology and Fabrication Team up to Drive Efficiency

PIPE

Retrofit projects like the Research Medical Center/Brookside Central Plant in Kansas City can be a challenge, but thanks to P1 Group’s Virtual Design Construction (VDC) and Fabrication capabilities, P1 has demonstrated efficiency and agility in moving this project toward completion.

“This design build project entails transforming existing space at the RMC campus into a newly functioning central plant that will provide chilled water and steam for approximately 196,000 square feet of medical office space and 40,000 square feet of hospital space,” Project Manager Bo Wempe said.

“Virtual modeling eliminates ‘stick-building’ and turns pipe fabrication into a streamlined manufacturing process,” Jeremy said. “Our pipe fabrication shop can then produce the highest-quality product quickly to meet time-sensitive project schedules, resulting in increased efficiency and value for the customer.”

“This new approach to fabrication through the use of laser-scanned images to create accurately detailed shop drawings is proving successful by eliminating field-made pipe joints and increasing overall productivity,” Jeremy added.

In the pipe fabrication shop, efficiency is further expedited.

Aided by the expertise of General Foreman Travis Pyles and Aquatherm Certified Specialist Aaron Howers, the pipe portion of the project featured a hybrid system using both welded steel and fused Aquatherm polypropylene pipe.

“All welded and fused joints were made in the controlled environment of the shop, with bolted flange connections being used for onsite installation,” Jeremy explained. “By eliminating verification, trimming, welding and fusion in the field we increased installation productivity.”

The pipe fabrication portion of the project began with the VDC department’s 3D laser scanner which scans the space to capture extremely accurate jobsite data. The VDC department uses the scanned data to develop a virtual piping model and create shop drawings for fabrication.

ELECTRICAL

Keeping efficiency top of mind, P1 Group also fabricated and installed electrical components at the RMC plant, including a new electrical service for the utility plant and an emergency generator to handle the existing building and new critical loads following the decommissioning of the current building generator plant and the commissioning of the new one.

“For the new general lighting within the Central Plant, P1 Group’s fabrication shop prepped the light fixtures with necessary power feed whips as well as chain hangers for ease of installation by our field forces onto the existing building concrete decks,” Jeremy Huppenthal, Electrical Project Manager, said.

“Electrical Fabication Shop Foreman Mike Wessel accepted the fixtures in Lawrence,

outfitted the fixtures as we needed them, and then packaged and delivered to the site,” Jeremy said.

Jeremy and Electrical Foreman Rustin Coe noted that the most challenging aspect of this project was locating and “fitting” the new equipment into the space and dealing with existing site conditions.

“There were a lot of existing systems that had to be demolished in order for us to install our work,” Jeremy said. “Some could not be demolished and we’ve had to work around them, rearranging and altering equipment layouts to meet the needs of the project.”

Jeremy says the electrical fabrication process reduced installation time. 

Brady Kyle: Intern to Associate Former P1 Intern Turns Valuable Experience into a Career “It was a large project and they were deep into the construction of the tower and also the central utility plant when I came on. I got to see some very large pipe and ductwork going up,” Brady said.

Brady came back for a second internship in his fourth year and was ultimately offered the project engineer position with Team Synergy, reporting to Vice President Paul Smith.

“The experience I got in my internships made taking a full-time position at P1 an easy decision,” Brady said. “Right away I was given tasks and allowed to run with them, with guidance, which really motivated me to learn as much as I could during that time in the field.”

Today, Brady manages a wide variety of tasks to keep projects moving, from problem solving and scheduling to managing small projects on his own and continuing to assist with major construction projects. He is currently working with P1 Group on the Children’s Mercy 9-story research tower project in Kansas City, MO. “Watch the estimators, go to job sites and ask questions, sit in on Virtual Design Construction BIM meetings,” Brady advises future interns.

“P1 was very willing to let me experience what I wanted during my internship and it helped shape my career path.”

Brady also helps P1 Group with college recruiting efforts by talking to students at Pitt State recruiting events. 

When P1 Group recruits interns, the company strives to find talent that will go on to do great things in a P1 career.

Project Engineer Brady Kyle was that intern. Brady accepted his first internship at P1 Group following his third year at Pittsburg State University upon the suggestion of a faculty advisor.

“I was a member of the MCA (Mechanical Contractors of America) student chapter at Pitt State and took mechanical and plumbing classes,” Brady said. “P1 Group’s business fit with my interests.”

“At P1 Group, I got to see the specialty side of construction,” Brady said.

Brady says he also had particular interest in large construction projects. As soon as he began his internship, no time was wasted. Brady immediately started going on-site to experience a large P1 project already underway: the Overland Park Regional Medical Center bed tower expansion and renovation.

Among other components, the project included eight new airhandling units, new boilers, chillers and cooling towers, and new medical gas source equipment.

Using P1 Group’s fabrication capabilities to great advantage, the majority of HVAC piping and plumbing was made in our fabrication shop off-site to keep the project on schedule and within budget.

After spending considerable time over the past five years working in the St. Joseph market, selling preventive maintenance contracts, Heather St. Clair has been promoted to Selling General Manager of the St. Joseph office.

The St. Joseph P1 Group office has had part-time management and part-time sales support since it opened in 2012.

Heather joined P1 Group in 2012 as well, dividing her time in preventive maintenance sales between St. Joseph and Kansas City.

Her sales leadership has netted an impressive $800K preventive maintenance sales base in St. Joseph.

“There are so many untapped opportunities in St. Joseph, especially in the industrial and commercial markets. I believe we could double that sales base in the next 2-3 years,” Heather said.

Congratulations Fall 2018 Corporate Sponsorship Winners Quivira Council BSA + Silverado Hawks Youth Football

Twice annually, P1 Group associates are invited to apply for the Corporate Sponsorship award. The sponsorships allow P1 to serve the community through organizations that are meaningful to P1 associates. P1 Group established the Corporate Sponsorship program in 2010, and has funded 36 associate-nominated organizations over the years. The Fall 2018 Corporate Sponsorship recipients are:  Quivira Council BSA, nominated by Clifford Pray, a P1 Project Manager who has been a BSA leader for ten years and has assisted with fundraising for the Council for several years. The Council will use the P1 donation for its 2018 Fall Camporee, called “Monster Mash”, at Winfield Lake.  The Silverado Hawks Youth Football Team, coached by Roy Mendez Jr., Sheet Metal Foreman, Las Vegas. The team will use the sponsorship to fund equipment, water, first aid and tournament fees.
