The UA apprentice program is a five-year period divided into one-year segments, each of which includes 1,700 to 2,000 hours of on-the-job training and a minimum of 216 hours of related classroom instruction. Apprenticeship is a rigorous program as the UA apprentices must work the same hours as journeymen during the day, plus attend night classes. P1 Fab Shops Work Seamlessly to Create Trip Cabinets and Stands

P1’s Electrical and Piping Fabrication shops worked together to fabricate a Trip Cabinet for Exelon’s Hendley Station (an Emerson customer) in Fort Worth, Texas. According to Senior Project Manager Rick Ellis, P1 has built approximately six of these cabinets over the past three years for Emerson.

and install three Trip Stands and one Pressure Status Manifold (PSM) Stand for El Paso Electric’s Newman Power Station, another Texas customer of Emerson, pictured below.

What set this fabrication apart is that it was fabricated from a schematic drawing only, whereas the cabinets are usually fabricated using a full set of drawings.

The stand fabrication, painting, equipment mounting, and piping were performed in the Pipe Fab shop by Foreman Brad Wendt, and sent to the Electrical Fab shop where Electrical Foreman Darren Ousdahl performed the electrical installation.

Dustin Gilbert, Timothy Rockers, and Troy Hoffman did the tube bending and welding in the pipe fab shop. Shawn Hasting and Connor Immenschuh worked on the electrical cabinet components. Over the years, P1 has also built multiple trip stands for Emerson customers. The stands are not enclosed because they are located inside buildings. The cabinet above is designed to go with an outside turbine, withstand the elements, and protect the contents inside.

The fabrication included a Unit 1 and Unit 2 Trip Stand, Unit 4 Trip Stand, and PSM Stand.

“These equipment stands will be installed by the power plant as upgrades to their existing turbine control systems, and the prefabricated stands will give the owner single point connections for each tubing connection,” Rick said. “This will simplify the field installation work and ultimately allow the customer to have tighter control of their turbines.” 

Last summer, Electrical and Pipe fab also worked together to fabricate

Local Sports Teams Benefit from Spring 2021 Corporate Sponsorships

Sheet Metal Foreman Steve Turner with the PSA Gold 12U team

Sheet Metal Fab Shop Manager Tom Keating with the 13U Topeka Royals

COVID may have put a damper on last year’s activities, but we had a great turnout for Spring 2021 Corporate Sponsorship applicants!

Steve Turner has been head coach for PSA Gold 12U (12-and-up) softball for two years. The team is located in McClouth, KS.

Join us in congratulating Sheet Metal Foreman Steve Turner and Sheet Metal Fabrication Shop Manager Tom Keating, winners of our Spring Corporate Sponsorships.

Steve and the owner of PSA Fastpitch Softball started a 10u team two years ago.

Tom’s award will benefit 13U Topeka Royals Baseball, a 13-and-under competitive baseball team. The team participates in leagues and tournaments in Kansas and Missouri, and plays in a Topeka, KS, league. Tom has been with the team for three years. “Coaching kids in all sports is what I enjoy. There is no better feeling than watching them not only become good athletes, but also good human beings,” Tom said. “Hopefully I am helping develop those attributes.”

“I took the team on as head coach this past fall,” Steve said. “My daughter is one of the players. We have girls from McClouth, Oskaloosa, Basehor, Tonganoxie, and Smithville, KS. Now we play 12U softball.” Steve says he finds it very rewarding coaching the 11 young athletes on the team, who, thanks to this sponsorship money, will soon have new uniforms. Congratulations to Tom and Steve, and the organizations benefiting from this program. 

The sponsorship money will help with league dues, tournament entry fees, and equipment.

ABOUT P1 CORPORATE SPONSORSHIPS Providing support for local charities, community activities, and events is an integral part of the P1 business plan. We take great pride in investing in our community and the lives of our associates. To this end, P1 offers two sponsorships to P1 associates Spring and Fall. All associates may apply for the sponsorships, which are intended to assist in the financial support of those organizations and activities that are important to our associates and the communities in which they live and work.

Fast Pace, Moving Parts, One Person: Associate Spotlight on Jen Morris

“Every day pretty much has me running around like a crazy person. Whatever I think I have planned for the day is rarely what I accomplish.”

herself gravitating towards operations, and decided to try her hand at dispatching. When Service Experts acquired Neal Harris, Jen found herself managing accounting and dispatch on a more regional level.

This is not unusual for many support staff in the AEC industry, and Operations Supervisor Jen Morris is no exception.

With a young son at home, the travel required wasn’t ideal, so she decided to go back to the family trade, selling commercial insurance.

The operations supervisor is a huge role that supports most of the divisions in the service department, including Plumbing, Electrical, Ammonia, Controls, Start-up, and Test and Balance. This role entails tracking contracts, PM management, accounts receivable, billing accuracy, billings forward, data collections and reporting, training, and any administrative duties that are needed.

“Two years into selling insurance, I knew I had made a mistake,” Jen said. “My desire to go back into the construction industry in an operational position led me to P1.” A few months after applying for a P1 position she didn’t feel was the best fit, Jen got a phone call from Executive Vice President Phil Nehring.

“Believe it or not, I actually welcome the interruptions, and I adore assisting others with obstacles that pop up. Especially when the outcome means I make life a little easier or smoother for someone that day."

Jen has been with P1 Group for two years now, but she began her career working as a bookkeeper for her family-owned Insurance agency and Stucco Company. She ventured out to expand her resume working for several small businesses in the construction industry as their bookkeeper and gained experience in the operations process. Her first job in the service world was for Neal Harris Heating & Cooling. She began doing data entry for the accounting department but found

8

P1’s long-time operations coordinator was retiring, and Phil thought Jen would be a good fit. “I had big shoes to fill, and am still very thankful Phil both remembered and considered me for such a great opportunity,” said Jen. With the job entailing support for so many divisions, it can be very fast-paced and challenging. But the pace is one of the things Jen loves about the job.

Wearing the “Mom” Hat

Jen works with many different associates each day, including Call Center Supervisor Jill Hollingsworth. “Every day is different and it can feel like a race,” Jen said. “Believe it or not, I actually welcome the interruptions, and I adore assisting others with obstacles that pop up. Especially when the outcome means I make life a little easier or smoother for someone that day." It didn’t take long for Jen to be promoted from Operations Coordinator to Operations Supervisor, working closely with Electrical, Controls, and Plumbing Service as well. “I love the team of people I get to work with. I’m excited to build relationships, expand my knowledge, and contribute to the success of each division,” Jen said. “When Jen came in and took on the role of Operations Coordinator, little did she know that she also inherited the job of keeping me on track,” Phil said. “She has stepped in to assist me and also sales and operations on many levels. Jen has demonstrated a true talent for mastering the calendar of activities, anticipating needs, and prioritizing personnel,” Phil observed. P1 is fortunate to have Jen and we wish her a long and bright future. 

Jen is a single mom to 16 year old son, Ayden (and human to 8-year-old cockapoo Bruiser). She says that in the midst of raising Ayden, she forgot to find a hobby or two outside of chauffeuring him from football fields to baseball fields to basketball courts and golf courses. “I’ve spent most of the last 16 years cheering him on from the sidelines, enjoying every minute of it,” Jen said. When there’s time to relax, Jen enjoys lake weekends, live music, golfing, razor rides, fire pits and traveling. Most recently she and Ayden ventured to Ft. Myers Beach, FL, for spring break. “For now, I’m soaking up the last few years of having Ayden at home before he leaves for college to chase his own dreams.”
