It Takes a Village St. Joe Team Works Together to Earn Record-Breaking Service Maintenance Contract It took 10 associates, working as one welloiled machine, to bring home the service maintenance contract for Altec Manufacturing, and it’s quite a story. St. Joseph, MO, and the surrounding area, is home to an array of industrial and manufacturing companies. When the P1 St. Joseph office established a service department in 2014, they we were able to secure a significant amount of Preventative Maintenance contracts from these companies. But one company was elusive - Altec Manufacturing.

Altec was established in 1929. The St. Joseph division builds large trucks with booms and lifts that are distributed worldwide, primarily for utility, telecommunications, and tree care industries. They employ a significant amount of people, but over the past seven years, P1 remained unsuccessful in attempts to get a meeting. It turns out the saying “it’s who you know” is as true today as ever. P1 Electrical Project Manager Cris Ray had a former colleague he learned had worked at Altec, so he gave that person’s name to Proactive Solutions Consultant Karley Pearl.

“Given our past track record, I wasn’t very optimistic,” Karley said. Never one to give up a lead, Karley pursued it. It turns out that lead had not only gone to college with Karley, they were members of the same gym. When Karley happened to see him at the gym one evening, she broached the subject of setting up a meeting with Altec. He was able to connect her to the right people and, much to her surprise, they agreed to meet with Karley and Selling General Manager Heather Richards-St. Clair. 

Teamwork in action: From left: Secily Rees and Karley; Gary McDonald with Altec Rep; Karley and Heather Richards-St. Clair During this meeting, Karley and Heather explained P1’s process and how it differs from what other companies do.

P1 CEO Smitty Belcher even had a chance to tour the facility, reiterating the need for the financial analysis.

“Our process is different in that an incredible amount of time and resources are invested to develop a program that makes the most sense for the equipment and overall operational budget,” Karley explained.

“Understanding the current spending for equipment maintenance is the only way to evaluate the right decision for the future,” Smitty said.

She went on to explain how costs and trends associated with the facility’s HVAC systems are assessed and areas of overspending and underspending are identified. Then, a physical survey is performed in order to understand if the preventative maintenance needs are being met, or not.

Once the surveys were complete, there was the daunting task of recording all the information and assembling the equipment list for each building. Gary spent hours tasking and pricing, including estimating the hours it would take to do the maintenance on the building, how many filters it would take, and how long it would take the techs to complete it all.

“They called us the next day and wanted us to come in and take a look,” Karley said. “During the meeting we offered to start with one building, but they wanted us to do it all.”

During this time, Karley was also conducting multiple meetings with the Altec staff to make sure the information was correct and input the way they wanted to see it.

Instead of one building, it ended up being the entire campus, which includes 19 buildings and more than 500 HVAC systems. One of the buildings is a brand new, state-of-the-art fabrication shop and makes up more than half the total package.

“Altec’s willingness to communicate and continue to work with me was incredibly helpful, considering to the amount of time I was spending on this project,” Karley said.

Altec was a cooperative partner from the very beginning. They provided their equipment maintenance financial information and P1 performed the survey, which took two full days. With that much volume to cover, reinforcements were needed. Secily Rees, Proactive Solutions Consultant-Topeka, helped Karley with the survey the first day, and Heather and Service Manager Gary McDonald helped out the second day.

All together, the team invested 256 hours from start to finish. For Karley alone it was 162 hours, and that is a lot for one sales person. Once all the details were finalized, the team was ready to tie the package up with a bow and the final meeting was scheduled. The P1 team of Smitty, Karley, and Heather presented the comprehensive program recommendations and provided several options that would fulfill Altec’s maintenance goals. 

“They were already spending a significant amount of money, and that wouldn’t change, but with our approach to maintenance, they would know exactly what they were spending their money on and what they were getting in return,” Karley said. By the end of the meeting, the team felt confident, and within a few days, the 2022 contract for $448,000 was signed. Less than a week later, Altec added the paint booths for an additional $88,000, bringing the total contract value to $536,000. Even though Karley is the one who gets credit for the sale, she emphasizes that a lot of the credit goes to the others in the team who rallied around her so she could present the best possible solution.

Eire go Brach: Zach Kittle Connects with Irish Roots to Celebrate Faith, Friendship, and Philanthropy

You might say the “luck of the Irish” was with P1 Group when Senior Project Manager Zach Kittle came on board. A 2005 graduate of the Construction Science program at K-State, Zach joined P1 for what he thought was just a temporary job while he looked for work with a general contractor. And 15 years later, Zach says he has no plans to work anywhere else. “P1 really cares about their employees,”Zach said. “I intend to retire here if they’ll let me!" An Army veteran, Zach had to leave P1 in 2010 for a full-year deployment in Afghanistan. “I couldn’t believe how P1 associates went above and beyond to check in with my family,” Zach recalls. “My wife was pregnant, and P1 friends

4

brought food and kept in touch to let me know how my family was doing.” Zach says he also enjoys the flexibility and challenge in his work. He worked as a carpenter in college and took a position as a finish superintendent prior to working at P1. When P1 hired him, Zack spent the first six months in sheet metal estimating, where he started learning the mechanical trade. Today, he manages complex sheet metal, plumbing, and pipe fitting projects, primarily in the commercial and industrial markets. “I love the fact that each project brings new challenges, and successes. But you don’t always know which will come when,” Zach said. Although many of our associates, Zach included, work some long hours, he says he prefers the flexibility that provides, even if he

is answering emails late into the night. “It gives me flexibility. My hours are usually 6:30-a.m. to 3:30 p.m., which gives me time to pick up the kids, go to their sports, and spend more time with family.” REDISCOVERING ROOTS About 11 years ago, Zach connected with his Irish heritage through the Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH), Father Donnelly Division, in Johnson County, KS. “I got back from Afghanistan and we were visiting the Kansas City Irish Parade when I ran into a high school acquaintance. He told me about the AOH,” Zach said. Leaving the Army had its benefits, but Zach missed the brotherhood and comradery Army life offered. 

“AOH is an organization of Irish Catholic men, and gave me a group of like-minded people with similar viewpoints,” Zach said. “It’s a great place to share not only friendship, but serve the community. AOH is big on giving back,” Zach said. The group’s motto is “friendship, unity, and Christian charity.” Zach says the group’s largest fundraiser is the semiannual Irish Road Bowling tournaments. You won’t find this in any bowling alley. Road bowling is an Irish sport in which competitors attempt to take the fewest throws to propel a metal ball (known as a bullet) along a predetermined course of country roads. The tournaments benefit two Kansas City-based charities: SAFE, the Surviving Spouse and Family Endowment fund for first responders, and the Duchesne Clinic, a primary care healthcare provider for low-income and uninsured residents of Wyandotte County, KS. Zach just finished a two-year term as president of the AOH, and has served on the board for eight years. One of his favorite things to do is march in the local parades. “We march in three parades per year when Covid isn’t an issue,” Zach said. One reason Zach enjoys the parades is it’s a family affair. His wife and sons are able to ride along on the fire truck. “My oldest son Liam loves to march with dad proudly sporting his kilt,” Zach said. “My younger son, Grayson, not so much. He has ‘outgrown’ the kilt wearing, for now.” P1 raises our collective pint and offers a big “sláinte” [cheers] to Zach!

Kilts

and tartans

Zach has a couple favorites when it comes to his kilts, including Kilt Man and J Higgins Kilts. He also makes his own. Zach wears a County Cavan tartan, because the AOH is the Father Donnelly division. Father Bernard Donnelly is from Cavan County in Ireland. Unlike Scottish kilts, Ireland tartans are based on the county you live in.

"Eat the Frog"

A Productivity Philosophy “If it's your job to eat a frog, it's best to do it first thing in the morning. And if it's your job to eat two frogs, it's best to eat the biggest one first.” The above quote, attributed to Mark Twain, basically means this: Identify one important task for the day and do it first. In modern times, the phrase refers to a productivity improvement mindset, developed by Brian Tracy, author of “Eat that Frog”. “ONE TASK? ARE YOU INSANE? I HAVE DOZENS OF THINGS I HAVE TO GET DONE EVERY DAY. I CAN’T POSSIBLY DO JUST ONE THING!” We all feel like this most days. If you feel pulled in a million directions and overwhelmed by the number of tasks on your plate each day, the frog mindset can be very helpful for perspective…and productivity. It’s not that you’ll call it a day once you’ve eaten your one frog. You’ll still work on other things, but your most important (often your most difficult task that requires the most energy and focus) will be prioritized first before all those other less-important-but-more-urgent things get in the way. IT PROMOTES A DEEP WORK HABIT The modern workplace isn’t set up to support that kind of distractionfree “deep work” (a phrase coined by computer science professor Cal

Newport). We’re distracted by so many emails, meetings, chat messages and requests for input that we don’t have the time or space to focus on our highest impact tasks. “Eat the Frog” requires us to push back against all of those distractions and prioritize the actions that will actually bring us closer to our goals. IT ENSURES YOU’RE SETTING YOUR OWN AGENDA Don’t open that email (at first). Email and instant messaging tools put you in reactive mode. As soon as you start responding, you’ve ceded your time and attention to what other people want or need you to do. In contrast, "Eat the Frog" asks you to put your agenda first before any other requests come in to derail your day. IT SETS YOU UP TO WIN “Most people overestimate what they can get done in a year and underestimate what they can do in a decade.” –Bill Gates Productivity systems often end up making us feel like we’re constantly behind and failing to keep up. When we feel bad we’re more likely avoid what’s making us feel bad in favor of things that boost our mood in the moment (i.e. procrastination). "Eat the Frog" forces you to focus on less, even when you know you can do more. Any day that you eat your frog is a good day, AND it takes full advantage of your best work hours. 

SERVING P1 PERSONNEL FOR MORE THAN TWO DECADES: P1 congratulates Shana Wallace on her recent promotion from Human Resources Manager to Human Resources Director. According to CEO Smitty Belcher, the promotion recognizes Shana’s dedication and commitment to the P1 HR department over more than two decades. “For more than 20 years, Shana has not only lead our human resources team to make sure P1 is always in compliance, but she goes the extra mile to ensure P1 is a place where associates not only want to work, but want to refer others to work as well,” P1 CEO Smitty Belcher said. Support roles are challenging, and HR is certainly one of the more challenging divisions of the company, given the varying nature of policy and process in our industry. In her role, Shana has connected with just about every employee at P1 in some way. “In Human Resources, every small thing that we do can have a huge impact on the business,” Shana said. “I have the greatest opportunity to support our P1 associates, to support the leaders of our company, and to help the business grow in many ways.” “The Human Resources profession is constantly evolving. We are responsible for so many different areas, particularly due to the diverse nature of P1 as a whole. We look for ways to creatively solve problems and to improve.” Shana says all of these factors make her job a lot of fun and very rewarding. “I sincerely appreciate the recognition of my recent promotion, but my success is due in large part to our great P1 HR team, and the support from leadership,” she said. Shana has driven all HR efforts while growing and managing a dynamic HR team. Her attention to detail and willingness to help so many different employees along the way are just a few of the things that set Shana apart. Thank you for all you do, Shana, and congratulations!
