The construction industry death-by-suicide rate is four times higher than all other occupation averages. Often people do not get involved when they see an employee who may be struggling, because they are unsure what to do or say when someone needs help.
A P1 Peer Connector is someone an employee can talk to and know that they will not be judged, and all will be kept confidential. Peer Connectors are formally trained in what to say and where to send someone for help.
If you are interested in becoming a Peer Connector, P1 Construction and P1 Service associates are invited to attend the next training:
If you cannot make this date/location, additional opportunities will be available this year. Stay tuned for those announcements.
Peer Connector training is voluntary and designed for people who want to help. The Peer Connector is identified by a hard hat sticker (or laptop sticker, if they are not a field employee) as a safe person to talk to.

Facility Maintenance Operations Employee Awards Help Shape Culture at Saint Luke’s
When your facilities team is as embedded, essential, and responsive as P1 Service’s Facility Maintenance Operations (FMO) staff, it makes sense to pause every now and then and shine a light on the individuals and teams going above and beyond.
That’s exactly what the Employee of the Quarter, Employee of the Year, and Golden Wrench Award programs were created to do. Launched in partnership with Saint Luke’s Health System, these awards celebrate the standout efforts of P1 Service FMO employees across the healthcare systems’ Central, North, Southeast, and Southwest regions.
“Employee recognition is a priority to ensure staff know they are appreciated and to point out when they go above and beyond,” FMO Program Administrator Jen Kohl said.
“It’s important to both P1 Service and Saint Luke’s leadership to acknowledge employees on a regular basis.”
According to P1 Service Vice President Dave Beebe, the concept for the programs began taking shape in 2022.
“We had several meetings about how to champion these programs and find a way to score winners fairly. Both awards officially launched in 2023,” Dave said.
The Employee of the Quarter and Employee of the Year awards recognize individuals within the FMO teams who show outstanding performance, dedication, and professionalism. Winners receive a $250
Visa gift card (quarterly) or $500 (yearly), a formal certificate, and an on-site reception at their location.
Nominations can come from within the FMO group—or from Saint Luke’s employees.
“A nomination from a fellow FMO team member is worth one point, while nominations from Saint Luke’s staff are worth two,” Dave explained. “This helps us emphasize the impact our people are making outside our own teams.”
Final selections are made by a voting committee of Saint Luke’s leads and facility managers, who review blind nominations that spotlight moments of true excellence.
The Employee of the Year is chosen from the four quarterly winners based on overall score.
Both programs have become a core part of FMO culture at Saint Luke’s.
“These have become competitive, coveted awards,” Dave said. “We’ve seen a clear impact on morale and engagement.”
The Golden Wrench Award is a team-based honor that recognizes entire regions for superior performance and service outcomes.
More than just a prize, the Golden Wrench fosters a spirit of healthy competition and pride among teams across the Saint Luke’s Health System.
“We measure against several key performance indicators in our CMMS—like corrective maintenance response times, customer survey scores, and preventative maintenance metrics,” Dave said.
The Golden Wrench Award emphasizes the honor of being recognized as the top-performing region. The winning team receives the traveling trophy—the coveted “Golden Wrench”—which remains with them until the next quarter’s results are in.
“When a team wins, I go on site, present the award, and recognize them personally for a job well done,” Jen added. “We make it a celebratory moment that really reflects the pride and ownership our teams feel.”

“These programs are about celebrating people who care deeply about their work, and are making a difference in critical environments.”
-Jen Kohl, FMO Program Administrator
The recognition goes beyond posters or plaques—it’s a way to affirm how the work being done every day in hospitals and facilities throughout Saint Luke’s truly matters.
“These programs are about celebrating people who care deeply about their work and are making a difference in critical environments,” Jen said.
Since the launch of the Employee of the Quarter and Employee of the Year programs, P1 Service FMO team members across the Saint Luke’s Health System have consistently stepped up and stood out.
In 2023, Jamie Darr and James Stickford represented the North Region with excellence in Q1 and Q2, while Alfredo Vasquez and Bobby Stevens were recognized from the Central Region in Q3 and Q4.
The momentum continued in 2024 with Andy See, Tanner Allen, and Seth Brooks, all earning quarterly honors for the Central Region across Q1 through Q3. Rounding out 2024, Ryker Hicks (Q4) proudly represented the Southwest Region, followed by Jacob Bellew (Q1 2025), who kicked off the new year with continued excellence from the same region. Special recognition also goes to our Employee of the Year honorees: Alfredo Vasquez for 2023 and Seth Brooks for 2024.

According to Dave, these individuals not only stood out in their respective quarters but also demonstrated sustained excellence that earned them top recognition across the entire year.
Golden Wrench honors have rotated through all four regions, with Saint Luke’s Southeast Region showing an especially strong run—securing the award three times between Q3 2023 and Q1 2025.
Congratulations to our FMO winners - past, present, and future –demonstrating the value and impact of a job well done.
• Between 2003 and 2017, there were 373 trenching-related deaths — over 80% occurred in the construction industry.
• Two-thirds of all excavation deaths happen in trenches less than 10 feet deep.
Many underestimate how heavy soil can be. Depending on water content and density:
• One cubic foot of soil can weigh 90–140 lbs.
• One square yard may weigh over 3,000 lbs — the weight of a compact car!

FORE Safety: The 2025 Safety Golf Tournament was a successful partnership between P1 Construction, P1 Service, our generous sponsors, and our P1 volunteers. Most importantly, the tournament raises funds for a worthwhile cause. Proceeds will go to the family of Ian Trego, 25, who died in an electrical construction accident. Thank you to all who came out and made it possible.
Thought Leadership: P1 Construction Technology Manager Jeff Peterson continues to share his expertise in technology and innovation with the AEC industry. Jeff recently spoke on a panel for MCAKC’s IMPACT Leadership Academy with two other leaders (Brianne Steward, Milwaukee Tool, Gilbert Garcia, Turner Construction), shaping the future of mechanical construction through technology and innovation. Each shared their unique perspective on leadership and tech in the field—from BIM and VDC, to engineering and prefabrication, to project management and estimating. Their insights challenged and encouraged our future leaders to think bigger, adapt faster, and stay curious.
400 and Counting! Seems like just yesterday the P1 Pipe Fabrication team was celebrating a milestone 100 orders with Daikin (in fact, it was one year ago), an account that began in 2022. Today, P1 has opened a second fabrication shop in Lawrence, dedicated solely to the off-site construction of polypropylene pipe projects, and has hit 400+ orders for Daikin. According to Pipe Shop Production Manager Jeremy Price, “Daikin has been a great account and doesn’t seem to be slowing down. We have really dialed in our process, and everything is running smoothly. We have an awesome team working on Daikin, including support from Billing Clerk Amy Jeske, whose organization on the account has been extremely helpful.” Cheers to hundreds more orders!
Foundation Award: P1 Construction was recently recognized as a 2025 Lawrence Business Magazine Foundation Award honoree. According to magazine Editor-in-Chief Ann Frame Herzog, “local business growth is the foundation of the local economy and we think it is important to celebrate those businesses giving back. The Lawrence Business Magazine Foundation Awards recognize growth in local businesses. Winners must have an office in Douglas County, have been in business a minimum of three years, and shown growth through job creation. Executive Assistant Meghan Scott and Director of Business Development Steve Hinshaw attended the celebration at Maceli’s restaurant in Lawrence, KS and received the award on behalf of P1.
