HAPPY NEW YEAR HOME
RESOLUTIONS By Victoria Hoffman While the New Year is a chance to reflect and regroup, there’s nothing worse than being bombarded with “suggestions” for New Year’s resolutions, when one size certainly doesn’t fit all. Start running? Not unless I’m being chased (and probably not even then). Try a Whole 30 diet? Too much green stuff. Bring me my chicken nuggets and beer. “Marie Kondo” my cluttered basement and garage? Maybe I should consider moving. But sometimes doing just a small thing makes you feel slightly more in control of your day. Here are some New Year’s resolutions that might not be so overwhelming. REACH OUT MORE You don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone. If you’re lucky enough to still have those "special someones" you don’t see every day but love to the moon and back, don’t fall into the “there’s always time” fallacy. Give them a call or reach out. PUT YOUR CLOTHES BACK ON THE HANGER For those who are obsessively neat, skip to item three. For the rest of us, sometimes the simple act of putting one small thing in order instead of just throwing it on the bed or a chair gives a sense of control over at least some things in your sphere. You put your pants away, now go tackle your day!
STOP LOOKING AT YOUR PHONE FOR A MINUTE I’m not judging. We’ve all been trained to check our phones incessantly. Try putting it down and away from you during designated times. Maybe it’s happy hour after work, or for parts of the day on weekends, or mealtimes with family. If this give you anxiety, turn on an auto response so people know you’re not available and will get back when you can. SAVE A LITTLE MONEY Create a small nest egg either for something you know you want or something you don’t yet know you want. Put a small amount that doesn’t deplete your paycheck aside (that differs for everyone, so you decide what that number looks like) in to a jar, mattress, or actual bank account and just let it grow. Don’t tell anyone, it’s yours and yours alone. DRINK A LOT OF WATER I know this might seem difficult, but if you can do it, you will reap multiple benefits. The rule of thumb is take your weight, cut that number in half, and that’s how many ounces of water you should drink each day. Getting a water bottle broken down by hours in the day (like this one on Amazon) can help you stay on track, and benefits include reduced fatigue, weight loss, less brain fog, healthier organ function (especially kidneys), and, if you party too hard, reduced hangover effects. WHATEVER YOUR NEW YEAR LOOKS LIKE, I HOPE YOU ALL HAVE A GREAT ONE!
