The Right Tech, to the Right Job, at the Right Time: Profile on P1 Service Coordinators Over the years, the P1 Group service department has developed a reputation for providing quality service and excellent customer care. It is the service technician, out on the job site every day, who has become the face of P1 Group, but it is the diligent work of the Service Coordinator behind the scenes, that keeps everything running like a finely tuned machine. Company wide, the P1 Service department currently has 680 active contracts and 145 technicians to take care of them, but it falls on the shoulders of 11 coordinators to oversee and manage the day-to-day activities. The service coordinators work in the trenches every day, fielding dozens of calls and scheduling technicians to ensure customer care. Their motto is “the right tech, to the right job, at the right time,” which in itself is a huge undertaking. It’s this whirlwind atmosphere that Amy Fenstermacher, Service Coordinator-Lenexa, loves most about the job.

“It’s different every day,” she said. “You know if it’s going to be especially hot/cold that you’ll get some calls, but you never know exactly what’s going to happen. It keeps things interesting!” Service Coordinators do spend a lot of time taking calls, but the job comes with a long list of other responsibilities as well. (continued next page) •

To keep this manageable, coordinators are assigned a team of technicians. Depending on the location, these teams range anywhere from six to 17 techs. The coordinators are responsible for providing the scheduling and other support for everyone on their team. It’s a tough job. It generally takes about a year for a new service coordinator to become proficient. According to Lenexa Call Center Supervisor Jill Hollingsworth, “The Lenexa call center has undergone some major changes in the past year. Aside from me, each coordinator has been with the company less than two years. “They have done an outstanding job learning the position and working together as a team. I don’t think I could ask for a better group of ladies to run the Kansas City divisions.” A critical component of providing good support is developing a good relationship with the technicians and learning how best to communicate with them. According to Erin Pearl, Service Coordinator-St. Joseph, “It is very important to forge a good relationship with the techs so that you can learn who they are and how best to work with them. “This also helps us learn the tech’s skill areas and areas where they still need

improvement, which helps ensure we pick the right tech for the job.” The end result is providing better service for the customer, which is the ultimate goal. “The dispatcher is the bridge that connects the client to our amazing technicians. Every role is an important piece of the greater puzzle, and without every piece, the client does not get the best we have to offer,” Michelle Oglesby, Service Coordinator-Wichita, said. “I love being in that vital role, making the process easier for the clients and technicians. In general, the world has seen a decline in customer service, and it makes me feel great knowing I play a role in getting our clients the best customer service.” Rebecca Venable, Service Coordinator-Topeka, sums it up best. “I think the most important aspect of our job is continuing to keep our internal and external customers happy. “Our customers keep our company rolling. When we build that relationship and make a customer feel valued and appreciated, they become a customer for life.” If you get a chance, say “thanks” to your Service Coordinator today: They are a critical part of P1 Group’s success. 

Project Profile: The University of Kansas Health System Cambridge Cancer Treatment Center Working on new construction around an active hospital is challenging enough, but the University of Kansas Health System (TUKHS) Cambridge Cancer Treatment Center project adds multiple floors to the mix – levels 8, 9, 10, and 12. This means P1 Group had to create a high level of efficiency across capabilities. As usual, the team was ready for the challenge with innovations in fabrication, virtual design, and inventory management that have helped this impressive electrical project run smoothly. In fact, it was P1 Group’s quick rescue of another TUKHS project that helped land this contract.

field hours, 22 miles of branch conduit, 74 miles of wiring, 2,000+ fixtures, and 20+ additional panels /transformers in the electrical rooms. Since navigating a working hospital on multiple floors is hard enough, P1 Group is using VMI (Vendor Management Inventory) to save the Foreman the time of having to manage material orders. “Our vendor, Rensenhouse, has a representative come to the job site 2-3 times a week and stock our shelves with the materials needed on a daily basis,” Nathan explained. “This lightens the foreman’s load of ordering day-to-day material.” “We are also using barrel wire to help with our wire pulls for branch

“Since this project is still in the early stage, we are off to great start. Our team has done a great job communicating and hashing out the different challenges that have come up.” In 2019, P1 stepped in to supplement an electrical contractor at TUKHS who had fallen behind on a fire alarm project. General Foreman Harold Green and Project Manager Alex Van Leeuwen got the project back on track and completed in the timeline required.

power,” Nathan said.

“Our team performed great under pressure,” Operations Manager Rick Drake said. “Everyone was very happy with the work P1 Group completed in a short period of time.”

As with many large projects, P1 Group’s Virtual Design & Construction department plays a major role in increasing efficiency.

That performance was not lost on TUKHS leadership, and shortly after, P1 Group earned the Cambridge project, located on the KU Med campus in Kansas City, KS. Project Engineer Nathan Pendergraft projects approximately 42,000

Just like it sounds, this is a barrel of wire that can be moved around the job site easily on dolly wheels. The barrel supplies easy-to-pull wire that makes wire pulls smoother and more organized.

“P1 is using our in-house BIM coordination to create electrical shop drawings for smoother install in the field,” Nathan noted. Careful coordination with US Engineering, who is working on the mechanical scope for the project, is also required.

“Due to the sheer size of electrical scope, we have a dedicated foreman and crew just for the 12th floor,” Nathan said. “They coordinate and develop phasing plans with US Engineering. We then have weekly progress meetings and BIM coordination to help with the field install.” The electrical scope of the project also includes Low Voltage under the leadership of Building Technologies Project Manager Jeff Dallas, and Temperature Controls, in partnership with Control Service Company. Nathan notes that even at this early stage in the game, the P1 field and fabrication teams have received high praise from JE Dunn and TUKHS leadership on how well the install of the conduit racks look. “Since this project is still in the early stage, we seem to be off to great start,” Nathan said. “Our team has done a great job communicating and hashing out different challenges as they have come up.”  INNOVATION IN FABRICATION “Due to the limited floor space for material storage, P1 Group’s electrical prefabrication capabilities have been critical,” Nathan said. There is almost nothing the P1 Group fabrication shops can’t make, and conduit transfer solutions were no exception on the Cambridge Cancer Treatment Center job. Electrical Fabrication Shop manager Mike Wessel and General Foreman Harold Green worked together to develop a custom conduit rack rolling cart to fit in the elevators, which allowed for a smoother conduit rack install on the multiple floors. P1 Group’s electrical fabrication shop not only fabricated the rolling carts, the shop is prefabbing all of the branch conduit racks for the 10th, 9th, and 8th floors of the building. The conduit itself is also fabricated in the shop, then placed on the fabricated racks for shipping.

I don’t know what it is about those cheesy Christmas movies but they get me every time. I just can’t wait to see the new list of Christmas movies coming to Netflix every year. With all the social distancing, stress, and anxiety 2020 delivered, I feel like we need them this year.

gossip columnist flying to Moldovia to cover a prince who may or may not take the role of king this Christmas. Of course the reporter ends up posing as his little sister’s tutor and the prince falls in love with her, although not before their fair share of drama…but you know they will live happily ever after...or will they?

From ghosts falling in love with humans and becoming real people to princes/princesses disguising themselves and falling for the most unexpected people, the glorious absurdity that ensues is like drinking some hot chocolate after playing in the snow. Grab some cookies and milk and let’s dive in: Here are some of my favorite Christmas movies on Netflix.

Christmas Prince 2? It's time for these two to get married! Of course the girl is learning the way of the royals and just isn’t quite fitting in as a typical princess – I mean, how dare she have a blog? But will her new restricted royal life cause her to back away? You’ll have to watch and see. A CHRISTMAS PRINCE (1, 2, & 3) What can I say about these movies except they are the cheesiest of cheese but in the most “favorite blanket” kind of way. It all starts with a

6

But wait, there’s more! Christmas Prince 3 brings…you guessed it, their new baby! Everything is going great and Amber is now pregnant with the royal baby. This time the story is centered around the treaty that was signed 100 years ago with another county. The rival country

is coming to re-sign the treaty when of course it goes missing. And of HOLIDATE course, if the treaty isn’t signed by Christmas Eve there will be a curse on This one is new this year and a little unconventional for a Christmas Amber’s first born. Being the reporter that she once was, she dives into movie. It starts with a girl who is single and slightly bitter from her last the mystery. Will she move fast enough to guarantee a happily ever? See relationship (we’ve all been there, am I right ladies?). It’s a little cliché, for yourself. using the old plot point of her family hounding her to be with someone. Enter her fun aunt (Kristin Chenoweth), who tells her to get a “holidate”, like the mall Santa good ol’ auntie brought home for Christmas. Conveniently enough, while trying to return some pajamas, our heroine meets her perfect holidate. They spend the next few holidays together. Eventually they fall in love but not before plenty of hi-jinks complicate things along the way. We all know how these end, but it’s always fun to see how they get there.

CHRISTMAS INHERITANCE In case you’re starting to wonder about me, I DO know none of these movies are even remotely plausible, but they are so fun to watch. This one starts out with a “party heiress” who continually disappoints her dad, the owner of a Hallmark-esque company. To make her prove herself, he sends her to the quaint small town (of course), Snow Falls, with the yearly Christmas letter to give to his business partner. But there are stipulations - how else would this movie be good? She can’t tell anyone who she is and has $100 total. This provides all the fun of the movie. She rolls into town on a bus and immediately has her meet cute with a local innkeeper. They of course hate each other at first but after she runs out of money on the second day of her trip, he employs her at the inn. After stumbling with cleaning rooms and baking cookies they eventually fall in love but not before he finds out who she is and sends her off. Will they reconnect on Christmas? Watch and find out!

So get in your favorite PJs, get a bottle of wine and some popcorn, and start bingeing. Let’s hope 2020 ends like all of these movies and we live happily ever after.

 Good News File: Plumber Josh Ridings and Plumbing Foreman Mike McCoy impressed our friends at Children’s Mercy Hospital delivering above-and-beyond service. Nicole Carr, DNP, RN, MSN, CNOR, Department Director, Sterile Processing at Children’s Mercy, writes the following: “Josh Ridings really helped us out a couple of weeks ago. I needed help getting into the drain of our decontamination room. He helped me retrieve about $20k of surgical implants from the drain, which was a HUGE relief! He wasn’t even working in my area anymore, but I knew he had the knowledge of how these drain traps worked and could at least talk me through it. I later learned that he did this completely off the clock, staying more than an hour after his shift to help me out. He and Mike McCoy both work tirelessly to make sure we have what we need to take care of our patients. I manage the sterile processing departments for the hospital and have worked with the two of them very closely over the past couple of years. They will work around any schedule we need to be sure we aren’t disrupting service, they are the easiest people to work with and always do such a great job.

P1 HAPPENINGS

Both of them will always collaborate with me, bringing any issues to my attention immediately, and working to solve the issue together. They’re so great that I almost wish I had a need for them to constantly be working in my department. They are professional, friendly, and very good at their job!”

 The dog stays, the candy goes: Thanks to everyone who donated that leftover Halloween candy to Operation Shoebox. This year 43 lbs of candy will be delivered (much to the delight of Nick Lawless’s dog Loki). Thanks to Nick for organizing the candy drive again this year!
