2007 Technology Fast 500 Innovate. Motivate. Accelerate. Annual list of the fastest growing companies in North America
2007 Deloitte Technology Fast 500 Research and Eligibility The Deloitte Technology Fast 500 is a ranking of the fastest growing technology, media, telecommunications and life sciences companies in North America based on percentage fiscal year revenue growth over five years (2002–2006). Sources for public and private companies that make the list include public company databases, Deloitte’s 16 regional Technology Fast 50 programs in North America and direct nominations. To be eligible for the Technology Fast 500, a company must meet the following criteria: 1. Owns proprietary technology or proprietary intellectual property that contributes to a significant portion of the company’s operating revenues or devotes a significant proportion of operating revenues to research and development of technology. Using other companies’ technology or intellectual property in a unique way does not qualify. 2. Meet minimum operating revenue requirements: • 2002 operating revenues must be at least $50,000 USD or $75,000 CD. • 2006 operating revenues must be at least $5 million USD or CD. 3. Be in business a minimum of five years. 4. Be headquartered within North America.
Market Maturity Propelling Tech Sector Growth There was a time not so long ago when tech companies were almost all high-concept, and not at all revenue-driven. That dot.com boom, of course, didn’t last. Successful companies today understand the value of meshing innovation with the realities of the bottom line. We see that this year in our 13th annual Deloitte Technology Fast 500 list. Their success is characteristic of the variety of successful technology companies that have found the right mix of business savvy and creativity. Today’s more mature tech companies are run with precision. They’re capital efficient and have a global outlook. It’s that business sophistication that gets you on the Fast 500. Our Top Five companies experienced an average revenue growth rate of 41,093 percent over five years, up from 38,107 percent in 2006. Revenue growth for the 2007 Fast 500 companies ranged from 253 percent to 79,060 percent, with an overall average growth of 1,823 percent. The Deloitte Technology Fast 500 recognizes North America’s fastgrowing technology companies in terms of percentage of revenue growth over five years. The Top Five SIRIUS Satellite Radio Inc. (NASDAQ: SIRI) was named the fastest growing company in North America. SIRIUS had a revenue growth rate over five years of 79,060 percent, moving from revenues of $805,000 in 2002 to $637,235,000 in 2006. Based in New York City, SIRIUS is a publicly held provider of satellite radio services. This is its first appearance on the Fast 500 ranking. SkyBitz Inc., a Sterling, Va.-based privately held communications/ networking company, came in second on the 2007 Fast 500 listing. SkyBitz provides wireless tracking sensors for the transportation industry and reported revenues of $26,673,000 in 2006, a leap of 40,314 percent from 2002 revenues of $66,000. This is its first appearance on the Fast 500 ranking.

First Solar, which manufactures solar modules, reported revenues of $134,974,000 in 2006, a leap of 27,446 percent from 2002 revenues of $490,000. This is its first appearance on the Fast 500 ranking. ISTS Worldwide Inc., a Fremont, Ca.-based privately held software company, came in fifth on the 2007 Fast 500 listing. ISTS Worldwide, an IT consulting and solutions company for the retail sector, reported revenues of $10,064,000 in 2006, a leap of 19,254 percent from 2002 revenues of $52,000. This is its first appearance on the Fast 500 ranking. Fast Highlights: Established, Revenue-Driven Companies Driving the Tech Industry Once again, privately held companies are prevalent on the list. While the number of publicly held companies on the list as a whole grew slightly to 52 percent (259 companies), it is still lower than the past five years. This year, eight of the Top 10 companies and 15 of the Top 20 are privately held, a complete reversal from five years ago in both the Top 10 and Top 20. The reason? Technology companies are more resource-driven today, which results in companies taking more time to mature. And, many more companies now go through mergers and acquisitions than an initial public offering.
www.fast500.com
Traditional technology regions rule this year. Here is the exception to Thomas Friedman’s observation that the world is flat. When it comes to the tech industry, both Silicon Valley and the New York tri-state region provide very close ecosystems surrounded by academia, innovation and financial resources. So, it’s no surprise that with 152 companies, or 30 percent, the Northeast has the most companies on the Fast 500 listing this year, including Number 1 SIRIUS Satellite Radio. It is also the region with the highest average growth rate: 2,169 percent. Coming close on its heels is the West, with 144 companies, or 29 percent. California continues to claim more Fast 500 companies than any other state, with 123 companies or 25 percent. Northern California is home to 70 companies, while Southern California has 53 companies.
A Big Return When it comes to percentage growth, it’s challenging to keep those rates sky high. So, even as revenues continue to climb, they may not increase at a rate that enables companies to remain on the Fast 500 list. So, we tip our hats to those whose growth continues to be exponential. Five of last year’s Top 10 companies made the 2007 Fast 500 ranking: Litle & Co., NewMarket Technology, Inc., DragonWave, Inc., I-trax, Inc. and Imaging Dynamics Company, Ltd. Three companies—Open Solutions, Inc., Celgene Corporation and Research in Motion—have ranked on the Fast 500 list for eight years. And, Gilead Sciences, based in Foster City, Calif., has been on our list for nine years.
Software is the leading industry again this year with 37 percent, or 185 companies, on the list, of which four are in the Top 10 and two are in the Top 5. This, in fact, mirrors the technology industry as a whole, and points to the growing importance of content as well as the business advantages in rapid growth enjoyed by software companies. Communications/networking follows with 16 percent, or 81 companies. Then come biotechnology/pharmaceutical companies and Internet companies, each at 12 percent. Medical equipment and scientific/technical instrumentation segments each make up 6 percent. Semiconductor makes up 5 percent of the list. Computers/peripherals make up 4 percent. Media and entertainment make up only 2 percent of the list (10 companies). However, they show the fastest average industry growth—9,021 percent, up from 675 percent in 2006. And, of course, Number 1 SIRIUS Satellite Radio is the list leader. We had more billion-dollar companies on the Fast 500 list this year. The number grew to 16 businesses from 13 last year that reported more than $1 billion in revenues. AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals LP, a biotechnology/pharmaceutical company based in Wilmington, Del., was at the top in earnings, with 2006 revenues of $26.5 billion. Ranked 195, this is the first year it has appeared on the Fast 500 listing.

The Top Five 1. SIRIUS Satellite Radio Terrestrial radio was never like this. With more than 130 streaming digital channels, 69 of which are commercialfree music, SIRIUS is allowing its 7.1 million subscribers on the go or in their home or office to enjoy a variety of programming delivered by three dedicated satellites orbiting directly over the United States. SIRIUS was initially founded in 1990 as Satellite CD Radio, Inc. but changed its name to SIRIUS Satellite Radio, Inc. in 1999. The service launched in 2002, and since 2004 has been presided over by CEO Mel Karmazin, who previously was president and COO of Viacom and president and CEO of CBS. Karmazin is no radio novice; he has also served as chairman and CEO of both CBS Radio and Infinity Broadcasting. The company’s far-reaching strategy has been to build a programming Goliath by signing blockbuster content deals with big-name entertainers and personalities such as Howard Stern, Martha Stewart and Eminem to broadcast shows on their own channels, as well as to offer syndicated programming originally created for terrestrial radio and individual niche programming for fans of musicians
like The Grateful Dead, Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra and Bruce Springsteen. From sports to news/talk to Hip-Hop and country, SIRIUS has matched its programming prowess with its variety of delivery options to listeners. Listeners in the car can receive SIRIUS programming from radio units that work with existing car radios or are preinstalled in partner automobiles, including Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, Chrysler Group, Ford and Land Rover. Those on the move can choose a portable unit, and those at home or in the office can add a SIRIUS radio to their home stereo, buy a standalone unit, subscribe to SIRIUS Internet radio and listen online or install their Sonos wireless digital music system to listen to many of the SIRIUS channels in any room. Since launching in 2002, SIRIUS’s revenue growth has charged up 79,060 percent. The company has managed to break the psychological barrier of getting customers to pay for radio, just as cable companies once accomplished with TV.

2. SkyBitz It goes without saying that the trucks you see on the highways around the United States have some kind of tracking device on them so that the home office can monitor their whereabouts. But, what about the attached trailers? Or rail cars or any other unpowered mobile asset? It’s hard to believe you can lose a 53-foot trailer, but it can happen. So, back in 1995, SkyBitz was launched with a grant from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, or DARPA, to develop a GPS tracking device with a multiyear battery life. After six years of R&D, SkyBitz Mobile Terminals began rolling off the production line and out to customers. Today, more than 400 fleets rely on SkyBitz GLS (Global Locating System) Trailer Tracking satellite technology to track more than 135,000 trailers and containers. The company has grown to 60 employees, up from 26 in 2004. And revenues have grown, too, from $66,000 in 2002 to $26.7 million in 2006, a five-year increase of 40,314 percent. “We’ve always been customer centric,” says executive vice president Roni Taylor, who has been with SkyBitz for more than four years. “The main reason our customers buy from us is that our product is easy to use and we’re easy to work with.”
With tracking ability, fleet customers don’t need to buy as many trailers. “Trucking companies become more efficient with the trailers they have,” says Taylor. “If a trailer filled with merchandise or sensitive materials is stolen—and, unfortunately, that happens regularly—that can be a very expensive loss. So, our product is used for security. They can put the device into panic mode which reports the trailer’s location every three minutes and leads police to it.” With 11 patents and 54 pending, SkyBitz has a number of new sensors they’re adding to their base product, and next year, there will be a next generation of the base platform. SkyBitz is also planning on moving more into the rail market and then strategically expand their business to other parts of the world. “There are more than four-and-a-half million trailers in North America, and only 450,000 are being tracked today,” says Taylor. This idea of unpowered asset tracking has only been around for about six years, so we still have a long way to go.

“Being a visionary high-tech company is very important to us,” she says, “but where we bring value is in the information we provide and the tools that manage the information. And those tools happen to be wireless technology.”

3. iTech US It would have been so easy for Kishore Khandavalli to push iTech US’s success with a philosophy of “the more clients the better.” But, Khandavalli had experienced that already, when his first company, PrimeSoft, was purchased by another company. He didn’t want to be part of a business driven solely by the bottom line.
Kishore Khandavalli, CEO Headquarters: South Burlington, VT www.iTechUS.com Revenue Growth Over Five Years: 39,392%
Ironically, though, by sticking to his guns and slowly hiring talented people with the equally committed goal of providing reliable, cost-effective solutions to customers, iTech sure grew. Khandavalli started the new company alone in his basement in 2002. Now, he has 285 employees around the United States. and clients that include IBM, Microsoft, Qualcomm, Lehman Brothers and Pitney Bowes. iTech’s revenues in 2002 were all of $72,000. In 2006, they hit $28.4 million, an increase of 39,392 percent. “It wasn’t our intention to grow as we did,” says Khandavalli. “That was a by-product of doing the right things— delivering projects on time and within or under budget, and treating our employees right.” iTech provides IT services and business process outsourcing solutions in the areas of business intelligence, data warehousing, human resources management systems and enterprise resource planning practices.
Currently, the business model is to go to client locations and address their projects on site. “A lot of the time, the client dictates the technology and how the solution is done,” Khandavalli explains. For now, Khandavalli is putting the brakes on to make sure iTech can continue to deliver the same level of service to clients. The classic growing pains challenge of a young entrepreneurial company hit iTech, and Khandavalli wants to keep that under control. “I don’t think we’ll be growing as fast as we have,” he says, “because if it gets too big, my concern is that the values and principles we put in place may get diluted.” But Khandavalli has some more comprehensive goals in mind for his customers in the next two years. “I want to develop an in-house Tech Center that would essentially be a think tank to develop total solutions for customer needs. We hire such talented individuals, I think this would make both my employees and my customers happy,” he says. “This presents a lot more challenges than the business we’re in. But if I can tackle and solve them, that will give me more satisfaction. I’m an engineer by trade, and I thrive by solving problems,” he says.
4. First Solar Formed in 1999 as First Solar, the Phoenix-based company manufactures photovoltaic (PV) modules that hit the commercial market in 2002. First Solar may be the first public company to integrate thin film technology into high-volume, low-cost production for electricity generation. The company website claims that it has achieved the lowest cost per manufactured watt in the PV industry using cadmium telluride instead of silicon to convert energy from the sun into electricity.
Michael Ahearn, CEO Headquarters: Phoenix, AZ www.firstsolar.com Revenue Growth Over Five Years: 27,446%
“Our proprietary thin film semiconductor technology allows us to achieve an average manufacturing cost per watt that is significantly less than the per watt manufacturing cost of producing crystalline silicon solar modules,” claims Michael Ahearn, First Solar CEO. First Solar was originally founded as Glasstech Solar in Toledo, Ohio, in the 1980’s by Harold McMaster, a Toledo investor and industrialist. It was later named Solar Cells and in 1999 became First Solar by an investment firm chaired by John Walton, heir to the Wal-Mart Stores, Inc.

empire. Before his death in a plane crash in 2005, Walton and Ahearn, his business partner, transferred ownership of the company to JWMA Partners, a firm bearing their initials. Prior to a recent secondary offering, Walton family members owned 53.3 percent of First Solar. In 2002, First Solar’s revenues were $490,000. Five years later, they posted revenues of $135 million, an increase of 27,446 percent. First Solar recorded a profit for the first time in 2005 and currently sells all its solar modules in Germany, Spain, Italy, France, the United States and Canada. First Solar has a manufacturing site in Perrysburg, Ohio, Frankfurt (Oder), Germany; and Kedah, Malaysia, which the company says is an important step “in our mission to accelerate the commercial adoption of solar energy.” Last February, it announced that it will supply solar modules for a 40-megawatt solar power plant to be constructed in the Saxon region of Germany, one of the largest PV projects ever constructed. The company established a whollyowned subsidiary, First Solar, GmbH, in Germany in 2003.

5. ISTS Worldwide Check out at a grocery store seems so straightforward when you’re a customer. Hand over cash or do the debit or credit dance with the little machine on the counter, get your packages and receipt, then head out the door. But, the back end is, of course, complicated. And, that’s where Viren Rana found his niche with ISTS. As an IT consulting and solutions company for the retail sector, ISTS has found there’s a lot of demand for custom solutions from retail and payment companies. “There aren’t that many solution-focused providers in this space,” says Rana, who founded the company in 2002 with 13 years of experience in IT, including American Stores, a holding company for the Lucky supermarket chain. “We have customers ranging from $50 million in sales to Fortune 50 retailers like VISA, Intuit, Symantec, Blackhawk Networks/Safeway and Sony Entertainment.” Rana started out with two part-time employees. Today, ISTS employees 275 people, 150 of whom work in India at the company’s global delivery center and the rest in the United States. The India-based employees design software and work on integration and testing. You’d think the biggest challenge Rana has faced is managing a workforce in two countries. However, as many entrepreneurs can appreciate, cash flow was a major issue
for him, particularly at the beginning, as was establishing relationships with clients. More recently, with the success of ISTS, his test has been scaling up operations from a start-up to a more profit-based company. “We took baby steps,” he says. “We put in the right people in the right places to help us make the transition. It took about six months to establish a foundation that would enable us to scale to the next level.” Keeping up with the latest business needs of his clients and industry innovations is also a challenge. “Mobile payments is the new industry buzz,” Rana says. “We’ve looked at our clients’ needs in this area and built our own components and framework around this.” With hiring and keeping good people a priority, Rana sees ISTS as having the potential for being a major global solutions provider in the retail and payments industry. Already, the company has increased revenues over five years from $52,000 in 2002 to $10 million in 2006, a 19,254 percent jump.
Viren Rana, President and CEO Headquarters: Fremont, CA www.istsinc.com Revenue Growth Over Five Years: 19,254%
“Everyone has people processes and technologies strength,” he says. “But we have that coupled with domain expertise. And, we keep doing the right things in terms of taking care of our people and only committing to what we can deliver to our clients.”

About Deloitte Deloitte refers to one or more of Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu, a Swiss Verein, its member firms, and their respective subsidiaries and affiliates. Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu is an organization of member firms around the world devoted to excellence in providing professional services and advice, focused on client service through a global strategy executed locally in over 140 countries. With access to the deep intellectual capital of approximately 150,000 people worldwide, Deloitte delivers services in four professional areas — audit, tax, consulting, and financial advisory services — and serves more than 80 percent of the world’s largest companies, as well as large national enterprises, public institutions, locally important clients, and successful, fast-growing global companies. Services are not provided by the Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu Verein, and, for regulatory and other reasons, certain member firms do not provide services in all four professional areas. As a Swiss Verein (association), neither Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu nor any of its member firms has any liability for each other’s acts or omissions. Each of the member firms is a separate and independent legal entity operating under the names “Deloitte,” “Deloitte & Touche,” “Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu,” or other related names. In the United States, Deloitte & Touche USA LLP is the U.S. member firm of Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu and services are provided by the subsidiaries of Deloitte & Touche USA LLP (Deloitte & Touche LLP, Deloitte Consulting LLP, Deloitte Financial Advisory Services LLP, Deloitte Tax LLP, and their subsidiaries), and not by Deloitte & Touche USA LLP. The subsidiaries of the U.S. member firm are among the nation’s leading professional services firms, providing audit, tax, consulting, and financial advisory services through nearly 40,000 people in more than 90 cities. Known as employers of choice for innovative human resources programs, they are dedicated to helping their clients and their people excel. For more information, please visit the U.S. member firm’s Web site at www.deloitte.com
