Το γαλάζιο ποδήλατο έμοιαζε από άλλη εποχή, όπως και ολόκληρη η πόλη. Bauhaus αναφορές και μια παραλία απ’ άκρη σε άκρη. Μετά από τέσσερις ώρες στο δρόμο γύρισα στο «καταφύγιό» μου. Πρώτο δείπνο της ημέρας μια κονσέρβα ρεβίθια και ένα μπουκάλι λευκό κρασί. Η ευτυχία πλησίαζε όλο και περισσότερο και το βράδυ ήταν απ’ αυτά τα ανοιξιάτικα που δεν ξέρεις αν προτιμάς να σε πάρει ο ύπνος ή αν είναι καλύτερα να τα ζήσεις μέχρι το ξημέρωμα. Το επόμενο πρωί ήμουν σχεδόν σίγουρος. Κάθε πόλη είναι ωραία, φτάνει να τη ζεις με μεγάλα διαλείμματα αποχής. Κάθε πόλη είναι ωραία αρκεί να μη γίνεις ποτέ σκλάβος της. Είχε πολύ ζέστη, καυτό καλοκαίρι και στα πρώτα είκοσι λεπτά άραξα το ποδήλατο έξω από ένα καφέ στην κεντρική λεωφόρο που το έχρισα αυτόματα «νέο στέκι για παγωμένο καφέ». Κοιτούσα τους κατοίκους και δεν αναγνώριζα κανέναν. Δεν είχα να πάω πουθενά, δεν είχα να πάρω κάποιον τηλέφωνο. Ήταν ωραία που δεν με άγχωνε τίποτα και ήταν ακόμα πιο ωραία που δεν υπήρχε τίποτα να με κάνει να ανησυχώ. Η σιγουριά του ξένου σε μια πόλη είναι ένα από τα αγαπημένα μου συναισθήματα και με αυτό πορεύτηκα ως το τέλος. Επιστροφή στην Αθήνα.

The light blue bicycle reminded me of other times, just like the whole city. Bauhaus references and an endless beach. After four hours on the road I returned to my ‘shelter’. First meal of the day; a can of chickpeas and a bottle of white wine. Happiness was all the more approaching and the night was one of the springtime ones, when you don’t know if you choose to nod off or more preferably experience them until dawn.

The next morning I was almost sure. Every city is beautiful, as long as you live it with big breaks of abstinence. Every city is beautiful, as long as you don’t turn into its slave. It was sizzling hot, a hot summer and on the first twenty minutes I left the bike outside of a coffee place on the central avenue, which I baptized as the ‘new lodge for cold coffee’. I was looking at the citizens and didn’t recognise anyone. I had nowhere to go, no one to call. It was nice that nothing was frustrating me and even nicer, that there was nothing to make me worry. The certainty being a stranger in a city is one of my favourite feelings and with this I kept going till the end. Back in Athens.

UNFORGETTABLE I WALK THE LINE by JOHNNY CASH

“Hello, I’m Johnny Cash”, με αυτόν τον τρόπο συστηνόταν πάντα ο «άντρας με τα μαύρα» στο κοινό του –σε οποιοδήποτε κοινό του- πριν οποιαδήποτε συναυλία ή εμφάνιση, είτε αυτή λάμβανε χώρα σε κάποιο ballroom ή γήπεδο, είτε στις φυλακές κάποιας πολιτείας της Αμερικής. Με αυτό το όνομα, άρχισε να συστήνεται μόλις κατατάχτηκε στον στρατό, ο επονομαζόμενος μέχρι τότε J.R. ήταν ένα από τα παιδιά μιας χριστιανικής οικογένειας βιοπαλαιστών που ζούσε με τις ενοχές του θανάτου του μεγαλύτερου του αδερφού. Από μικρός τραβούσε το δικό του Γολγοθά ώσπου του έδωσε ήχο και στίχους όχι όμως για να περιγράψει την τραυματική παιδική ηλικία του ή τα εφηβικά βάσανά του αλλά για να εξομολογηθεί την αφοσίωσή του στην πρώτη του “sweetheart”, Vivian Liberto, την οποία και παντρεύτηκε. Το “I walk the line” γράφτηκε το 1956 και ήταν το πρώτο τραγούδι του Johnny Cash που έγινε Νο1. Η Vivian του το ανταπέδωσε όταν μετά το χωρισμό τους εξέδωσε μία μορφή αυτοβιογραφίας υπό τον τίτλο “I walked the line: My life with Johnny Cash”. Η δική της εκδοχή περιέγραφε το δικό της Γολγοθά, τις προσπάθειές της και την υπομονή της να αντέξει έναν σύζυγο εθισμένο στο αλκοόλ, σε χάπια και ναρκωτικές ουσίες, σε εφήμερες σχέσεις, σε περιοδείες μακριά από αυτήν και τα τέσσερα παιδιά τους. Κι όμως, από μικρός ήθελε να γίνει τραγουδιστής και το δικό του χρονολόγιο ξεκινάει από το Αρκάνσας το 1932, μεγαλώνει με θρησκευτικούς ύμνους και με την country μουσική που ακούει στο ραδιόφωνο του. Η στρατιωτική του θητεία τον στέλνει στη Γερμανία. Έχοντας αγοράσει την πρώτη του κιθάρα, επιστρέφει στο Μέμφις, παντρεύεται, γίνεται πλασιέ και είναι μόλις 22 ετών όταν «προσλαμβάνεται» στο δυναμικό της Sun Records με «συναδέλφους» τους Elvis Presley & Jerry Lee Lewis. Ακολουθεί το παράδειγμά τους και το 1958 κάνει μία στροφή προς τον κινηματογράφο η οποία όμως τον επαναφέρει εκεί απ’ όπου ξεκίνησε. Επιστρέφει στις περιοδείες και στις συνεχείς μετακινήσεις από πόλη σε πόλη παρέα με την οικογένεια Carter και κάπως έτσι ξεκινάει και η επόμενη ιστορία για τον Johnny Cash και την κοινή του ζωή με την June Carter. Αρχικά ο έρωτάς τους είναι απαγορευμένος και «ηθικά» και πρακτικά: είναι και οι δύο παντρεμένοι, η June είναι 3-4 χρόνια πιο μεγάλη από αυτόν, έχουν ήδη παιδιά από τους προηγούμενους γάμους τους, τίποτα δεν φαίνεται να είναι απλό. Όμως, δεν υπάρχει πιο απλό πράγμα απ’ το να είσαι αληθινός. Η «αλήθεια» τους επισημοποιήθηκε το 1966. Οι λεπτομέρειες είναι γνωστές από την ομώνυμη ταινία με τους Joaquin Phoenix και Reese Whitherspoon. Στα Country Music Association Award το 2003 ο Johnny και η June είναι απόντες, έχουν πεθάνει με λίγους μήνες διαφορά, πρώτα αυτή και μετά αυτός. Η τελετή λειτουργεί σαν μνημόσυνο, προβάλλονται οι υποψηφιότητες, ακούγονται τα ονόματα, μεταξύ αυτών και το δικό του, το πλάνο δείχνει μαυροφορεμένους που είτε κλαίνε, είτε χειροκροτούν… και νικητής αναδεικνύεται ο Johnny Cash για καλύτερο άλμπουμ της χρονιάς (American IV: The Man Comes Around), για καλύτερο τραγούδι, για καλύτερο βίντεο (και τα δύο για το Hurt) για τα κατορθώματά του στη μουσική. Άρα, τελικά μετά τον Γολγοθά ακολουθούν πόσα κατορθώματα; Ευτυχώς, ο Johnny δεν τον ανέβηκε μόνος. Όλοι μας χρειαζόμαστε και κάποιον άλλον που θα είναι εκεί, να μας δείξει το δρόμο, να γίνει ο προσωπικός μας Σωτήρας.

‘Hello, I’m Johnny Cash’, is the way that the ‘man in black’ always used to introduce himself to his audience –any kind of audience- before any concert or appearance, either it took place in a ballroom, a sports field, or even in a prison of a US state. With this name J.R., son of a Christian family of breadwinners, who grew up with the guilt of his brother’s death, begun introducing himself too, when he enlisted in the army. Since a child he bore his own cross, until he gave it sound and lyrics, not to describe his traumatic childhood or his puberty woes but to confess his devotion to his first ‘sweerheart’ , Vivian Liberto, to whom he married. ‘I walk the line’ was written in 1956 and it was his first song to become a No.1 hit. Vivian reciprocated, when after their divorce she published a form of autobiography entitled ‘I walked the line: My life with Johnny Cash’. In her own version, she described her own woes as well as her attempts and patience to cope with her husband’s addiction to alcohol, pills, drugs, the extra- marital affairs and the tours far away from her and their four children. But Johnny Cash wanted to become a singer since a child and his own timeline dates back in Arkansas in 1932; he grows up listening to hymns of praise and country music from the radio. He enlists in the army in Germany and having already bought his first guitar, he returns to Memphis, gets married, becomes a door-to- door seller and is only 22 when he is ‘hired’ by the Sun Records team with Elvis Presley and Jerry Lee Lewis as his colleagues.

He follows their example and in 1958 he turns a corner and starts a career in the cinema only to go back from where he started. Again tours and frequent journeys from city to city accompanied by the Carter family, and this is how the new story of Johnny Cash and his common life with June Carter begin. At first, their love is forbidden both ‘morally’ and practically: they are both married, June is 3-4 years elder than him, they already have children from previous marriages, nothing seems to be simple. But there is nothing more simple than being true. Their ‘truth’ was out in the open in 1966.The details are known by the homonymous movie with Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon. In the Country Music Association Awards in 2003 Johnny and June are absent, they have died with only a few months difference, first she, then him. The ceremony runs like a requiem, the nominees are projected, the names are heard, among them his name too, the camera zooms in people in black either crying or cheering and the winner is…Johnny Cash for the best album of the year (American IV: The Man Comes Around), best song and best music video (both for ‘Hurt’) for his achievements in music. So, eventually after the cross how many achievements could come? Luckily, Johnny didn’t have to bear him all by himself. Each of us needs someone how is there, to show us the way, to become our Personal Jesus.

DFA Records Το label DFA, έχει κατορθώσει να παραμείνει στις πρώτες θέσεις της λίστας με τις πιο αξιόλογες ανεξάρτητες δισκογραφικές εταιρείες κυρίως λόγω συνέπειας: Προωθεί καλλιτέχνες που μπορεί να γράφουν διαφορετική μουσική ο ένας από τον άλλο, αλλά δημιουργούν την εντύπωση ότι όλοι έχουν το στυλ της DFA και διαθέτουν ήχο φρέσκο όσο και συμφυή με την παράδοση της εταιρείας. Στην indie πλευρά του ηχητικού πρίσματος της παρέας του James Murphy βρίσκονται οι Prinzhorn Dance School , ένα από τα λιγότερο προβεβλημένα σχήματα του label, τουλάχιστον μέχρι φέτος. Με το δεύτερο album τους, που φέρει το όνομα «Clay Class» το δίδυμο των Suzi Horn και Tobin Prinz μένει πιστό στον art pop ήχο με τον οποίο μας συστήθηκαν το 2007 με το album που έφερε το όνομα τους αλλά πηγαίνει το πράγμα ένα βήμα παραπέρα: το ύφος παραμένει μινιμαλιστικό, οι ρυθμοί ελλειπτικοί, τα κιθαριστικά riff μονότονα όσο και «καθαρά» αλλά είναι σαφές ότι συνθετικά οι Prinzhorn Dance School κάνανε το βήμα παραπάνω. Το «Clay Class» δεν άρεσε σε όλους τους κριτικούς αλλά σίγουρα κέρδισε την προσοχή του μουσικού κοινού και αξίζει να του δώσετε μια ευκαιρία ειδικά αν μουσικά κινείστε κάπου μεταξύ των Gang of Four, των LCD Soundsystem και των Kills.

DFA Label has managed to linger on the first ranks of the list with the most remarkable independent record labels mostly because of its consistency strategy; It promotes artists, whose style on music writing may vary, but they give the impression that they all share the style of DFA and their sound is fresh and consistent with the tradition of the label. On the indie side of the sound spectrum of James Murphy’s ‘gang’, we find Prinzhorn Dance School, one of the least well-known bands of the label, until this year at least. With their second album, entitled ‘Clay Class’, the duo of Suzi Horn and Tobin Prinz remain loyal to the art pop sound, with whom they were introduced to us in 2007 with an album, which bore their name, but they take it one step ahead: the style remains minimal, the rhythms elliptic, the guitar riffs monotonous as much as ‘clean’ but it is clear that Clay Class have taken the leap. ‘Clay Class’ might be considered as a flop for some critics but it definitely trapped the attention of the music society and deserves one chance, especially if your music preferences roll about between Four, LCD Soundsystem and Kills.

OZON CINEMA ΚΕΙΜΕΝΟ ΜΑΝΩΛΗΣ ΚΡΑΝΑΚΗΣ TEXT MANOLIS KRANAKIS

Το 65ο Φεστιβάλ Καννών ξεκινάει στις 16 Μαΐου με το «Moonrise Kingdom» του Γουές Άντερσον. Και αυτό είναι ένας μόνο από τους λόγους που κάνουν το hype να είναι ο πρώτος και μεγαλύτερος επισκέπτης του μεγαλύτερου κινηματογραφικού φεστιβάλ στον κόσμο. Αν το σημαντικότερο χαρακτηριστικό του Φεστιβάλ Καννών είναι πως καταφέρνει να συνδυάζει την ιστορία του σινεμά με το μέλλον του, η φετινή εορταστική 65η διοργάνωση επιβεβαιώνει για άλλη μια φορά τον κανόνα. Όχι μόνο γιατί η επίσημη αφίσα του φιλοξενεί την ασπρόμαυρη Μέριλιν Μονρό να σβήνει κεράκια, πενήντα χρόνια μετά το θάνατο της, την ίδια ώρα που η καινούρια ταινία του Γουές Άντερσον βυθίζει ήδη την Κρουαζέτ στα παστέλ vintage χρώματα της, αλλά κυρίως γιατί το πρόγραμμα των φετινών Καννών είναι το τέλειο ρεμίξ δύο και περισσότερων γενιών δημιουργών που φέρνουν στην Κρουαζέτ τις καινούριες τους ταινίες, σίγουροι πως από τη στιγμή που θα ξεκινήσει το Φεστιβάλ όλος ο πλανήτης θα μιλάει γι’ αυτούς. Από τον Βάλτερ Σάλες που μεταφέρει – επιτέλους - το «On the Road» του Τζακ Κέρουακ στη μεγάλη οθόνη μέχρι τον Ντέιβιντ Κρόνενμπεργκ που διασκευάζει Ντον ΝτεΛίλο στο «Cosmopolis» με πρωταγωνιστή τον Ρόμπερτ Πάτινσον και από τον Μίκαελ Χάνεκε με το «Amour» μέχρι το πάλαι πότε τρομερό παιδί του γαλλικού σινεμά Λεός Καράξ με το «Holly Motors», η λίστα με τις ταινίες που διεκδικούν τον φετινό Χρυσό Φοίνικα είναι ταυτόχρονα και η λίστα με τις ήδη πολυσυζητημένες και πολυαναμενόμενες ταινίες της χρονιάς. 65th Cannes Film Festival starts on 16th May with «Moonrise Kingdom» by Wes Anderson. And this is only one of the reasons that the hype is the first and greatest visitor of the greatest film festival in the world. If the most important characteristic of the Cannes Festival is that it manages to pair the history of cinema with its future, this year’s celebratory 65th is no exception to the rule. Not only because the official poster ‘hosts’ a black and white picture of Marilyn Monroe blowing her candles, fifty years after her death, while the new movie of Wes Anderson submerges La Cruisette in her pastel vintage shades, but also because the programme of this year’s Cannes festival is the perfect remix of two and even more generations of creators, who bring to Cruisette their new movies with the confidence that from the moment that the festival will begin, the whole planet will be talking about them. From Walter Salles who will –finally- bring ‘On the Road’ by Jack Kerouac on the big screen to David Cronenberg with his adaptation of Don Delilo to ‘Cοsmopolis’ with Robert Patinson as the leading role and from Michael Haneke with ‘Amour’ to veteran ‘enfant terrible’ of French cinema Leos Karax with ‘Holly Motors’, the list of the candidate movies for this year’s Golden Palm is at the same time the list with the already most talked about and most expected movies of the year.

Along with them are also the new movies of Xavie Dolan, Alain Resnais, Michelle Godri, Thomas Vinderberg, Ken Loach, Abbas Kiarostami and others in a selection that reaches the hype to the stars and makes the anticipation last longer for those well-established ten days of May, when then international cinema locks out of the dark theatres, economic crisis, French elections and anything else that is not just…cinema.

Ή αλλιώς ο αναρχικός κι άλλοτε funky κόσμος της street art και των δημιουργών της, όπως αυτός ξεδιπλώνεται μέσα σε μία γκαλερί – κουτί. Το ‘Κουτί της Τέχνης’ είναι τo πρώτο Designer toys /Street Art shop της χώρας μας. Ένα άκρως ενδιαφέρον πρότζεκτ - δημιούργημα του Αργύρη (SER) Σαρασλανίδη και της Σιμόνη Φοντάνα, που με τη προσωπική τους ποπ σουρεαλιστική αισθητική, το πηγαίο ταλέντο και τη δημιουργικότητά τους, έχουν ως σκοπό να μας μυήσουν στην τέχνη του δρόμου. Το τυχερό κοινό της Θεσσαλονίκης μπορεί εκεί να βρεί οτιδήποτε αναλώσιμο έχει να κάνει με την street art και τη ζωγραφική. Για όλους τους υπόλοιπους φαν η ομάδα του κουτιού αναλαμβάνει την περάτωση decoration και τοιχογραφιών, ενώ παράλληλα οργανώνουν πολλά εικαστικά workshops και μια πληθώρα από events.

A highly interesting project- creation by Argyris (SER) Saraslanidis and Simone Fontana, who along with their personal, pop, surrealist aesthetic, their unselfconscious talent and their creativity have set their sights on introducing us to street art. The lucky enthusiasts of Thessaloniki can find there anything disposable that has to do with street art and drawing. For the rest of the fans, the box-team also undertakes decoration and mural painting projects alongside with a plethora of events.

Denim & Supply Ralph Lauren has called a globally exclusive collaboration, for the Winter collection 2012, with Avicii. The DJ and record producer, who is awarded with the Grammy, comes from Sweden and is widely known for his electro music DJ-ing. For this collaboration, Avicii will participate at the advertising campaign for the winter collection 2012 and the production of a video, through which the campaign will be shown for the first time, at the end of the summer.

In the collection S/S ’12 are depicted the 40 years of VANS heredity, the company that first launched the skate shoes. This year, with the collection Classics 2012, VANS presents the 70’s shoes models, enriched with patterns that remind of their creation era. A characteristic model is the AUTHENTIC, which as the first model of VANS, has remained the same and so does its demand.

O Γερμανός Βoris Hoppek, καλλιτέχνης του δρόμου και χίπης 2ης γενιάς, ζει στην Βαρκελώνη όπου και αριστεύει στην καλλιτεχνική παράνοια. Όταν δεν φωτογραφίζει γυμνές γυναίκες σε kinky στάσεις, ζωγραφίζει αιδοία πάνω σε τοίχους, vans και καντίνες. Και είναι πολύ περήφανος γι’ αυτά . Το ΟΖΟΝ Raw τον ανέκρινε για τη σημειολογία των έργων του και τις εμβληματικές bimbo φιγούρες του που έχουν ταξιδέψει ανά τον κόσμο. Ο Hoppek τον Μάιο θα κάνει μία στάση στην ATOPOS cvc, για να τσεκάρει αν η πόλη μας βυθίζεται όντως στο βούρκο της και αν οι Αθηναίοι είναι ξενέρωτοι γύρω από το θέμα του σεξ.

The German-born Boris Hoppek, a street-artist and a 2nd generation hippy, lives in Barcelona, where his artistic insanity excels. At the times he is not shooting naked women directed in kinky positions, he draws vaginas on walls, vans and canteens. And he is very proud about them. OZON Raw questioned him on the semiotics of his work and his iconic bimbo dolls, which have traveled around the world map. The upcoming May Hoppek will stop at ATOPOS cvc in order to see if we have sunk in our bad reality and whether the Athenians are talking a lot about sex. Μίλησέ μας για τις εμπειρίες σου και για το τι σε έκανε να συνειδητοποιήσεις ότι η urban art είναι το στοιχείο σου.

Tell us about your background and what made you realize that urban art was your thing.

Δούλευα σε ένα γραφείο στο τμήμα του τεχνικού σχεδιασμού, ο φίλος μου είδε στην τηλεόραση κάτι σχετικό με την street art και σκέφτηκε ότι θα μου πήγαινε. Μια νύχτα λοιπόν, πήραμε μερικές φιάλες σπρέι και βγήκαμε στο δρόμο. Δεν ξέρω γιατί, αλλά από εκείνο το σημείο κι έπειτα απλά συνέχισα να ζωγραφίζω.

I was working in an office for technical drawing. My friend saw street art on TV and he thought it would be perfect for me. We got some spray cans and went out one night, when he pushed me to do this. I don’t know why, but from this point I just continued doing it.

Ποια ήταν η μεγαλύτερη πρόκληση σε σχέση με τη δουλειά σου;

Over the course of your career can you spot which was your greatest challenge?

Το να φωτογραφίσω γυμνές γυναίκες. Ήταν σαν θεραπεία για ‘μένα. Αντιμετωπίζω προβλήματα στο να δουλεύω και να μιλάω με κόσμο. Άλλες προκλήσεις ήταν να δουλέψω σε μουσεία και να συμβιβαστώ με τις αρχές τους.

Taking photos of naked women. It was like a therapy for me as I have problems to talk and work with people. Also, working with museums and making compromises with authorities.

Τι είναι αυτό που σε ωθεί;

I get bored very fast and easy. Most things in life are banal. Doing something stupid and useless is interesting for me like with drawing.

Βαριέμαι πολύ γρήγορα και εύκολα. Τα περισσότερα πράγματα στη ζωή είναι μπανάλ, το να κάνεις απλά κάτι χαζό και άχρηστο είναι ενδιαφέρον για εμένα. Όπως το να ζωγραφίζεις για παράδειγμα. Αποτελεί προσωπικό στόχο για εσένα να ξεκινήσεις ένα διάλογο ανάμεσα στον κόσμο και τα σύγχρονα σεξουαλικά ήθη;

Ναι, αυτό ακριβώς. Πώς προέκυψε η ‘bimbo’ κούκλα; Πέρα από τις κοινωνιολογικές αναφορές, συνοψίζει την άποψη σου για το γυναικείο σώμα;

Υπάρχουν ποικίλες ερμηνείες της λέξης και διάφορα είδη bimbo. H θηλυκή bimbo, για παράδειγμα γνωστή και ως ‘schlampella’ σε Αμερική και Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο, είναι ο χαρακτηρισμός για την πλατινέ ξανθιά με μεγάλο στήθος, μεγάλο πισινό, ξυρισμένο αιδοίο, cool τατουάζ, make-up, που κάνει καλό σεξ με τον κάθε τυχάρπαστο. H λέξη συνοψίζει την έννοια του ‘τέλειου’ θηλυκού σώματος δηλαδή με μαλακό, ζεστό και αφράτο δέρμα. Πιστεύεις ότι οι τοίχοι της Αθήνας χρειάζονται τις εμβληματικές σου κούκλες;

What is the cause that drives your work?

Is your professional goal to open a dialogue between the people and the contemporary sexual mores?

Yes, exactly.

How did the ‘bimbo’ doll appear? Apart from any sociological references does she recap your view on the female body?

There are several meanings of the word bimbo and then, several bimbos to describe them. The female bimbo aka ‘schlampella’, in the UK and US it is the word for a blond girl with big tits, big butt, shaved pussy, cool tattoos, make-up and constantly having good sex with everybody. All in all, it’s a recap on the «perfect» female body, soft and warm and fluffy skin.

Do you feel that Athens is in need of a catch up with your iconic dolls?

I don’t know how it is with dolls in Greece, but the art-scene is good in Athens.

Street art is everywhere. However, perhaps in discussing and celebrating sex, Athens is a little bit behind.

Why did you choose to name it ‘Full Of Love’ ? Does it have an ironic take on our sexual ideas?

As always there had to be a name. Besides love it will be full of sex and full of shit. Yes, joking about our ideas of sex and love, but trying to make it better by inspiring people to talk about it and to play.

Γιατί επιλέξατε τον τίτλο ‘Full Of Love’ Μήπως έχει μια ειρωνική χροιά σχετικά με τις σεξουαλικές μας ιδέες;

Is there anything particularly that you would like to experiment with in the future?

Όπως πάντα έπρεπε να υπάρξει ένα όνομα. Πέρα από την αγάπη, θα είναι γεμάτο σεξ και σκατά. Όντως, κοροϊδεύει τις ιδέες μας για το σεξ και την αγάπη, αλλά συνάμα το κάνει καλύτερο εμπνέοντας τον κόσμο να μιλήσει για αυτά και να παίξει γύρω από το σεξ.

Υπάρχει κάτι συγκεκριμένο με το οποίο θα ήθελες να πειραματιστείς στο μέλλον;

Οι graffiti artists είναι αφοσιωμένοι εργάτες που έχουν βαλθεί να ομορφύνουν και να χρωματίσουν τις κακώς δομημένες πόλεις. Αυτό το κάνουν αφιλοκερδώς και πολλές φορές βάζοντας σε κίνδυνο τον ίδιο τους τον εαυτό. Κάποιοι τους αντιμετωπίζουν σαν βάνδαλους και εγκληματίες που λερώνουν ξένες περιουσίες αλλά στην πραγματικότητα είναι καλλιτέχνες που αμφισβητούν την κανονικότητα και προσφέρουν τα έργα τους στο δημόσιο χώρο. Η επικοινωνία και η έκφραση του ανθρώπου πάνω σε επιφάνειες χρησιμοποιώντας μπογιές ως δραστηριότητα είναι σίγουρα προγενέστερη της έννοιας της ιδιοκτησίας. Η τέχνη σ`αυτή της την μορφή γίνεται ένα μέσο έκφρασης και επικοινωνίας, ό,τι δηλαδή είναι η τέχνη εξ`ορισμού,έτσι παύει να είναι αντικείμενο με εμπορική αξία αλλά ένα ανεκτίμητο τεκμήριο της ζωής και της προσωπικής κατάθεσης σε ένα κοινωνικό σύνολο και το αστικό περιβάλλον. (Η ιστορία της κάλυψης αυτού του θέματος θα μπορούσε να είναι ένα καλό κινηματογραφικό σενάριο. Ο Wild Drawing και ο Scar κατέληξαν στο κρατητήριο με μια δίκη να εκκρεμεί με την κατηγορία της διακεκριμένης φθοράς δημοσίου χώρου.)

Graffiti artists are devoted craftsmen who have set out to make our badly structured cities more colorful and beautiful. They do it at no personal benefit and sometimes by putting themselves in danger. Some see them as vandals and criminals who smudge other people’s property but, in actuality, they are artists who put into question normality and offer their pieces of work in public. Communication and expression on outer faces of buildings by using paint as an activity is definitely prior to the term ‘property’. Art in this form becomes a means of expression and communication, namely what exactly art by definition is, so it ceases to be an object with commercial value, but an invaluable proof of life and personal contribute to the social community and urban environment.

(The story of this coverage could be a viable cinema script. Wild Drawing and Scar ended up in detention and a trial is due with the charge of exceptional damage in public place.)

Ασχολούμαι με τη φωτογραφία, με ενδιαφέρει η ανάλυση και οι παραμορφώσεις που μπορεί να δημιουργήσει. Στα έργα μου το πρόσωπο ή το σώμα δανείζεται χαρακτηριστικά οθόνης, όπως είναι η μεγεθυμένη ανάλυση, η παραμόρφωση, η αλλοίωση. Στα αρνητικά γκράφιτι που έχω φτιάξει η βασική επιρροή μου ήταν οι ακτινογραφίες. Είναι δύσκολο το να είσαι κορίτσι και graffiti artist;

Πρέπει να προσέχω περισσότερο, αυτό έχω καταλάβει. Δεν είμαι πάντα άνετη, έχω αισθανθεί να πιέζομαι ψυχολογικά. Από την άλλη το να είμαι δημιουργική υπό αυτές τις συνθήκες με βοηθάει να γίνομαι καλύτερη και πιο δυνατή. Σπουδάζεις στη Σχολή Καλών Τεχνών, το γκράφιτι προέκυψε μετά ή σε βοήθησε στο να μπεις στην σχολή;

Ξεκίνησα πριν μπω στη σχολή, νομίζω ότι με έχει βοηθήσει σε πολύ μεγάλο βαθμό. Ήταν πάντα η μεγαλύτερη πρόκληση για μένα, για αυτό κάθε φορά που βάφω έχω περισσότερο άγχος από ό,τι είχα στις εισαγωγικές της Καλών Τεχνών!! Πρόσφατα ζωγράφισες νόμιμα σε ένα σχολείο. Θα προτιμούσες να βάφεις μόνο νόμιμα, σε δημόσιους χώρους ή σε γοητεύει η ανομία;

Η εμπειρία του σχολείου ήταν πολύ χρήσιμη για μένα. Οι αντιδράσεις των παιδιών με συγκίνησαν πάρα πολύ και μου έδωσαν δύναμη να συνεχίσω στο μέλλον. Σίγουρα θα ξαναέκανα κάτι παρόμοιο σε σχολείο, από την άλλη μου αρέσει να φτιάχνω κάτι στο δρόμο, νομίζω πως αυτά που κάνω ταιριάζουν περισσότερο εκεί και είναι αυτό που με γεμίζει περισσότερο από ό,τι άλλο κάνω σε σχέση με την τέχνη. Θέλω να συνεχίσω να κάνω και τα δυο.

In your painting you use elements of photography, like pixels and negative, do you also deal with photography? Is it part of your work or does it just influence what you imagine and paint?

I deal with photography; the analysis and the distortions that photography might create really interest me. In my pieces of work, the face or the body have some screen elements, like enlarged analysis, distortion or mutation. In negative graffiti, which is my brainchild, I was influenced by X-rays.

How difficult is it being a girl and a graffiti artist?

I have to be more careful, this is what I see. I am not always cool, I have felt psychological pressure as well. On the other hand, being creative under those circumstances helps me become better and stronger.

You study Fine Arts, did graffiti come up later or did it help you to study in this particular field?

I started graffiti before beginning my studies in Fine Art, I think it has helped me tremendously. It has always been a great challenge for me, but every time I paint I am more anxious than when I was sitting for the entering exams.

Lately you painted legally in a school. Would you prefer painting in public places only or does the illegal entice you?

This experience was really useful for me. The reactions of the children moved me and gave me strength to continue at the future. I would definitely do anything similar in a school again, on the other hand I like creating anything in the street, I believe that all the things I do fit more there and this is what fills me the most regarding art. I want to continue doing both.

Είμαι από το Μπαλί και ήρθα στην Ελλάδα το 2006. Μου αρέσει να κάνω βόλτες στο κέντρο και να χαζεύω τη street art σκηνή, που τον τελευταίο καιρό μάλιστα είναι πολύ ζωντανή. Τι άλλο κάνεις εκτός απο γκράφιτι; Πρόσφατα είδα ένα animation που έφτιαξες ετοιμάζεις κάτι άλλο;

Τώρα ετοιμάζω το δεύτερο βιβλίο comic (Streetalcoholic #2), στο οποίο αποτυπώνω την προσωπική μου εμπειρία στο χώρο της street art . Είναι διαφορετικό από το Streetalcoholic#1, γιατί στο #1 παρουσιάζω την ιστορία και την πορεία του γκράφιτι σε παγκόσμιο επίπεδο. Εσύ έκανες την αφίσα για το Meeting of Styles 2012 της Αθήνας. Χρησιμοποίησες υπολογιστή ή είναι όλο το σχέδιο στο χέρι; Πόση ώρα σου πήρε;

Όλη η αφίσα είναι στο χέρι και μαζί με μια ακόμη, επίσης στο χέρι, που είναι όμως πιο minimal, μου πήρε περίπου τρεις μέρες. Έχεις αντιμετωπίσει προβλήματα με την αστυνομία εξαιτίας του graffiti;

Ναι, πρόσφατα, ήμουν με ένα φίλο και την ώρα που βάφαμε μας έπιασαν. Μας πήγαν στο τμήμα όπου και περάσαμε ένα 24ωρο στα φιλόξενα κρατητήρια της ΕΛ.ΑΣ., μετα αυτόφωρο, δικαστήριο και χωρίς να αποχωριστούμε ούτε στιγμή τις αγαπημένες μας χειροπέδες....

Where are you from? What do you like in Athens?

I’m from Bali and came in Greece in 2006. I like strolling in the centre and looking around at the street art scene, which recently by the way is really alive and kicking.

What else do you do apart from graffiti? Recently I saw an animation piece you made. Are you preparing anything else?

At the moment I am preparing my second comic book ( Streetalcoholic #2 ), in which I’m trying mark my personal experience from the street art scene. It’s different from Streetalcoholic #1 because in the first I presented the history of graffiti and the way it developed on an international level.

You made the poster for ‘Meeting of Styles’ 2012 of Athens. Did you use a PC or was it on the whole a sketch by hand? How long did it take you?

I made the whole poster by hand along with one more. Also, completing the work by hand, which is more minimal, took me three days.

Have you ever got yourself in trouble with the police because of graffiti?

Yes, I was recently caught with a friend of mine while painting. They took us to the police station and kept us in detention for 24 hours on their hospitable premises. After charged for being caught red-handed, a trial followed and of course not a single moment passed without our beloved handcuffs.

SONKE (sonke.gr) Τι ετοιμάζεις αυτό τον καιρό; Φήμες λένε για μία ακόμα ατομική έκθεση και έναν δικό σου χώρο στο κέντρο της πόλης, είναι αλήθεια;

Ετοιμάζω μια έκθεση για το bios η οποία θα γίνει στις 27 Απριλίου. Από τον Σεπτέμβρη θα έχω μόνιμη έκθεση σε δικό μου χώρο στην οδό Σαρρή στου Ψυρρή όπου είναι μια υποβαθμισμένη γειτονιά και η βασική ιδέα είναι να μετατρέψουμε όλο αυτόν τον δρόμο σε καλλιτεχνικό στέκι με κίνητρο την ανάπτυξη της περιοχής. Θέλουμε να δοθεί η δυνατότητα σε νέους καλλιτέχνες να δείξουν την δουλειά τους και να κερδίσουν χρήματα από αυτή χωρίς ποσοστά και μεσολαβητές όπως γίνεται μέχρι τώρα. Αυτό έχει υλοποιηθεί σε άλλες χώρες και έχει πάει πολύ καλά. Τα κορίτσια που ζωγραφίζεις στους τοίχους της πόλης είναι πλάσματα της φαντασίας σου, κορίτσια που έχεις γνωρίσει ή θα ήθελες να έχεις γνωρίσει;

Ξεκίνησα να ζωγραφίζω στον δρόμο για μια συγκεκριμένη κοπέλα μετά από έναν χωρισμό. Στην αρχή ζωγράφιζα λουλούδια για αυτήν στα μέρη που σύχναζε και αργότερα την φιγούρα της, ήταν ο μόνος τρόπος επικοινωνίας που είχα μαζί της. Έχουν περάσει τέσσερα χρόνια από τότε. Τώρα πλέον ζωγραφίζω ζευγάρια πληγωμένα από τον έρωτα με αφορμή αυτό το γεγονός. Ποιες είναι οι επιρροές σου;

Έxω επηρεαστεί από τις εικόνες που υπήρχαν γύρω μου όταν ήμουν παιδί και κυρίως από προγενέστερους καλλιτέχνες του δρόμου. Θυμάμαι είχαμε στο σπίτι μας ένα κεραμικό πιάτο κρεμασμένο στον τοίχο που απεικόνιζε μια φουρνάρισσα να ψήνει ψωμί. Ήταν χαμογελαστή, αλλά η στάση του κεφαλιού της ήταν γυρτή προς τα δεξιά σαν να ήταν χαρούμενη, αλλά κουρασμένη. Όταν το είδα πρόσφατα ανακάλυψα ότι είναι ίδιο με τις φιγούρες που ζωγραφίζω. Αυτή η γυναίκα μου είχε αποτυπωθεί στο μυαλό μου. Τι ήθελες να γίνεις όταν ήσουν μικρός;

What are you preparing this time? Rumor has it about a personal exhibition and a place belonging to you at the city centre. Is it true?

I am preparing an exhibition for bios, which will be taking place on the 27th April. From September I will have a permanent exhibition in my own place at Sarri Street in Psiri, which is a rundown neighborhood and the main idea is to convert the whole street into an artistic lodge in order to upgrade the district. We want to give the possibility to new artists to show their work, earn money without any commissions or mediators, which is the case so far. We have seen this happen in other countries and the outcome was really positive.

Are the girls you paint on the walls of the city products of your imagination or girls you have met or you would like to meet?

I started painting on the street for a specific girl after a breakup. At first I painted flowers for her in the places she used to frequent and later her figure, it was the only way of communication I could have with her. It’s been four years since then. Now I only paint couples hurt by love after the incident I had experienced.

Which are your influences?

I have been influenced by pictures around me when i was a child and basically by previous street artists. I remember we had in our house a ceramic plate hung on the wall, which depicted a baker baking bread. She was smiling but her head was leaning on the right as if she were happy but tired. When I lately saw it, I discover that it bears a striking resemblance to the images I paint. This woman had stayed indelible in my mind.

What did want to become when you were a child?

A baker.

I use stencils sometimes, generally it is freehand.

Your lettering style in graffiti is unique! How would you describe it?

It’s really organic. I like treating my pieces as if they were alive. Maybe a little bit more like beings other than letters. I avoid using effects and techniques to impress.

Have you painted graffiti in other cities abroad? Which ones?

Venice, Padova, Heidelberg, London, Lisbon and recently Gent and Amsterdam.

Κάνω και tags. Δεν μπορώ να πω ότι νιώθω πως είναι βανδαλισμός αλλά ακόμα και να το είχα έτσι στο μυαλό μου θα εξακολουθούσαν να έχουν φοβερό ενδιαφέρον. Στους τοίχους ζωγραφίζεις τύπους με πολλά μαλλιά, πολλά μούσια και πολλά μάτια. Δεν ξέρω γιατί αλλά έτσι φαντάζομαι τον θεό, εσύ;

Μ’ αρέσουν πολύ τα παγανιστικά. Δεν πιστεύω σε κάποιο θεό αυτή τη στιγμή αλλά σε ανθρώπους. Αν πίστευα πιθανότατα θα ήταν έτσι. Όλους αυτούς τους τύπους που φτιάχνω, τους βλέπω πιο πολύ σαν όλους εμάς, που και τι θεϊκά ας πούμε. Χαρακτηριστικά λειτουργεί δηλαδή πιο συμβολιστικά. Όταν βγαίνεις στο δρόμο, ξέρεις τι θα ζωγραφίσεις ή χώνεις freestyle;

Ποτέ δεν βάφω με sketch. Χάνεται το ενδιαφέρον. Μπορεί να έχω κάποια ιδέα στο μυαλό μου από πριν βέβαια ή να κουβαλάω μαζί ένα sketchbook και να συνδυάσω διάφορα. Ποιους street artists ή γκραφιτάδες θαυμάζεις;

Είναι πάρα πολλοί. Μερικοί είναι οι Neck Face, Aryz, David Choe, Broken Fingaz, Lush, Twist, Charlie Isoe, Maya Hayuk, Kyle Ranson (αν και πιο εικαστικοί είναι οι δυο τελευταίοι), και οι rk, Zap, Gpo, Falco και Sailor.

Do you do tags on the street or do you consider it vandalism?

I do tags as well. I can’t say that I consider it vandalism but even if I had it in my mind this way, they would still be excitingly interesting.

On the walls you paint guys with lots of hair, thick beards and lots of eyes. I don’t know why but this how I imagine God looks like, you?

I like a lot pagan stuff. I don’t believe in any god at the moment but in people. But even if I did, probably he would look like that. All those guys I make, I see them more as a one of us, who, as a matter of appearance acts in a more symbolic way.

When you hit the street, do you know what you will paint or do you freestyle your pieces?

I never work from a sketch. It loses its interest. Maybe I already have one idea in my mind or carry one sketchbook with me but I mix various things.

Which street or graffiti artists do you look up to?

They are so many. Neck Face, Aryz, David Choe, Broken Fingaz, Lush, Twist, Charlie Isoe, Maya Hayuk, Kyle Ranson (although the last two could be more considered as artists), Ark, Zap, Gpo, Falco and Sailor.

Ναι! Έχω βάψει σε Αγγλία, Ελβετία, Ιταλία και Βουλγαρία . Είναι εύκολο να βάφεις με πυροσβεστήρα;

Έχει κάποιες διαδικασίες που μπορεί να είναι λίγο επικίνδυνες αλλά αξίζει. Πρόσφατα διακόσμησες με τα γκράφιτι σου ένα στριπτιτζάδικο, ήταν εύκολο; Μετά από αυτό προτιμάς τα commissions ή τον δρόμο;

Είναι ενδιαφέρον να έχεις ένα ετερόκλητο περιβάλλον.

When did you start painting graffiti and why?

I started in 1998 at school because I liked looking at tags and pieces in the street and in this way I wanted to express myself.

Have you painted abroad?

Yes! In England, Switzerland, Italy and Bulgaria.

Is painting with a fire extinguisher an easy process?

It has some challenges, which might be a wee bit dangerous, but it is worth it.

You have recently decorated with your graffiti a stripper club. Was it easy? After that do you prefer commissions or painting on the street?

It is interesting to act in different places.

Η έμπνευση μπορεί να έρχεται και να φεύγει, αλλά στα μάτια των Pink Playground, η αποπνέουσα βαρεμάρα του Τέξας είναι μια ακόμα ευκαιρία για δημιουργία. Αρνούμενοι να κοιτάξουν απλώς τα παπούτσια τους, αρέσκονται στο να μπλέκουν μουσικές δημιουργώντας κάτι δικό τους, κάτι που οι ίδιοι ονομάζουν dream punk. Το περσινό “Destination Ecstasy” κατάφερε να αφήσει ανεξίτηλη ροζ μπογιά στα αυτιά μας κι εμείς σπεύσαμε να τους πιάσουμε την κουβέντα.

Inspiration may come and go, but for Pink Playground, this sense of ennui that Texas exudes, is one more chance to create. Refusing just to gaze their shoes, they prefer mixing music styles creating something of their own, something they call dream punk. Last year’s ‘Destination Ecstasy’ managed to leave an indelible pink color in our ears, so we didn’t lose time to have small talk with them. Τι σημαίνει τελικά ‘Pink Playground’;

What’s a pink playground after all?

James: Στην αρχή σκεφτόμασταν να ονομάσουμε το συγκρότημα ‘Playground Twist’ από το ομώνυμο τραγούδι των Siouxsie and the Banshees, την ίδια περίοδο όμως είχαμε κολλήσει και με ένα συγκεκριμένο τραγούδι των Pink Industry, το ‘Don’t let go’. Στο τέλος κάναμε μία μίξη των δύο ονομάτων και προέκυψε το ‘Pink Playground’. Ο καθένας πάντως έχει και μια δική του εκδοχή για το τι σημαίνει το όνομα, καλώς η κακώς!

Tara: Ακριβώς το όνομα ‘Pink Playground’ είναι ο δικός μας τρόπος να εκφράσουμε τη δυαδικότητα.

James: We were originally going to call ourselves «Playground Twist» after the Siouxsie and the Banshees song. Around the same time we kind of obsessed with a specific Pink Industry song called «Don’t let go», so we just kind of merged the names together. Everyone seems to have their own idea of what a Pink Playground is. For better or for worse!

Tara: Exactly, Pink Playground is our own personalized expression of dualism.

Το Τέξας είναι αρκετά μακριά από εδώ και η αλήθεια είναι ότι δεν ξέρουμε και πολλά για αυτό. Πώς είναι να ζείτε και να δημιουργείτε εκεί;

James: Texas is really big and the terrain changes from area to area. Where we live (Houston) it’s pretty humid and mostly flat. It is pretty boring and hot here, and that’s part of the reason why we spend most of our time making art and music!

James: Το Τέξας είναι πολύ μεγάλο και το έδαφος διαφοροποιείται από περιοχή σε περιοχή. Εκεί που μένουμε (Houston) έχει αρκετή υγρασία και το έδαφος είναι στη πλειοψηφία του επίπεδο. Είναι πολύ βαρετά και έχει πολλή ζέστη εδώ. Και αυτός είναι ένας από τους λόγους που τον περισσότερο καιρό τον περνάμε ασχολούμενοι με μουσική και τέχνη. Το στοιχείο του shoegazing είναι έκδηλο στη μουσική σας, αλλά στον ήχο σας αναμειγνύονται και άλλα είδη. Πού θα τοποθετούσατε τους εαυτούς σας μουσικά;

Tara: Θα συμφωνήσω στο ότι τείνουμε προς συγκεκριμένες τάσεις στη μουσική. Όμως με όλα αυτά τα είδη νιώθω σαν να μου βάζουν ταμπέλες και για αυτό μερικές φορές μπαίνω στον πειρασμό να κάνω κάτι το εντελώς διαφορετικό από αυτό που νομίζω ότι περιμένουν από εμένα. Θεωρώ πως μία δόση έκπληξης και ποικιλίας είναι σημαντική αλλά είναι και ταυτόχρονα σημαντικό να είμαι ο εαυτός μου. Εάν είχα να διαλέξω ένα είδος για τους Pink Playground θα προτιμούσα το Dream Punk από το Shoegaze.

Texas is far away from here and the truth is we don’t know much about it.

What’s it like to live and create there?

There’s a lot of shoegazing in your music, but still it sounds like a pot that mixes different styles. Where would you put yourselves musically?

Tara: I agree that we lean toward specific tendencies. Labels and genres tend to give me the sense of feeling pigeonholed. Sometimes I feel compelled to do the exact opposite of what I think is expected. I think an aspect of variety and surprise is an important element, but at the same time so is being myself.

If I had to choose a genre for Pink Playground, I would prefer Dream Punk over Shoegaze.

What are your lyrics made of?

Tara: I feel they are mostly the product of an ongoing struggle. I think some of the biggest themes when I write lyrics are spirituality and different emotions.

What about your artwork? Are you just choosing beautiful images for your album covers or are these made as a result of inspiration from your songs, like an eye-expansion to your music?

Tara: Νιώθω ότι αποτελούν προϊόν μιας συνεχούς πάλης. Νομίζω ότι τα πιο σημαντικά ζητήματα που αναφέρονται στους στίχους μας είναι η πνευματικότητα και τα ετερόκλητα συναισθήματα.

Tara: I see our cover art as a visual translation. James and I don’t always agree on ideas but I think it is important to leave room for each other to freely express ourselves.

Επιλέγετε απλά όμορφες εικόνες για τα εξώφυλλα των δίσκων σας ή και τα ίδια τα εξώφυλλα είναι προϊόντα έμπνευσης μέσα από τα τραγούδια σας, σαν μια οπτική αποτύπωση της μουσικής σας;

What’s next to come for Pink Playground?

Tara: Για εμένα η τέχνη των εξώφυλλών μας είναι μία οπτική απόδοση. Ο James και εγώ δεν συμφωνούμε πάντα, αλλά πιστεύω ότι είναι σημαντικό να μπορεί ο καθένας να συμβιβάζεται για να μπορούμε να εκφραστούμε ελεύθερα και οι δύο.

James: Records, records and even more records. We are going to start playing shows eventually as well. As a duo or group, I’m not too clear on all of that yet.

All I know is that we are going to work out our live set for a while before we start playing around.

Τι έπεται για τους Pink Playground;

James: Δίσκοι, δίσκοι και πάλι δίσκοι. Κάποια στιγμή θα αρχίσουμε και τα show. Ως ντουέτο ή ως γκρουπ, αν και δε μπορώ να μιλήσω με απόλυτη σιγουριά για αυτό. Αυτό που ξέρω είναι ότι θα δουλέψουμε λίγο παραπάνω πάνω στο live set πριν να ξεκινήσουμε εμφανίσεις.

Και ενώ οι φωτογραφίες του εκτίθενται σε κάποιες από τις πιο σημαντικές γκαλερί της Αυστραλίας, ο Simon ταξιδεύει στη μακρινή Γροιλανδία απαθανατίζοντας παγόβουνα σε αποσύνθεση. Simon Harsent lives between New York and Australia, while teaming up with some of the best commercial companies to finance his most personal photo-projects. While his photos are exhibited in highly considered galleries all around Australia, Simon travels to Greenland to capture pictures of large chunks of ice being melted. He talks to OZON for his feelings about his most sensitive project, ‘Street Kids’, a mini but shocking photo series on the homeless street kids in Sydney.

What could one see through the documentary shots of these kids and their body scars?

Εγώ προσωπικά είχα τρομοκρατηθεί με το πόσο βαθιά πληγωμένα και επηρεασμένα ήταν αυτά τα παιδιά για να κάνουν τέτοιο πράγμα στους εαυτούς τους. Αλλά ορισμένα από τα παιδιά κουβαλούσαν τις ουλές αυτές σχεδόν με περηφάνια και μιλούσαν για αυτές λες και ήταν κάποιο επίτευγμα. Εκείνη τη στιγμή ήταν που αποφάσισα ότι δεν ένιωθα την ανάγκη να δείξω τα πρόσωπα τους αλλά τις ουλές που κουβαλούσαν, οι οποίες θα παραμείνουν για το υπόλοιπο της ζωής τους μία υπενθύμιση εκείνου του καιρού.

I was horrified at the how deeply hurt and effected these children were that they would do this to themselves. But for some of the kids, they wore the scars almost with a pride and the kids would talk about them as if they were a right of passage.

It was then that I decided I didn’t feel a need to show their faces I need to show the scars they carried, the flesh wounds mean so much more, they are and will be for the rest of their lives a reminder of that time.

Does ‘fragile beauty’ promises a more interesting story to be captured?

Θα έλεγα ότι η ευθραυστότητα είναι ένα χαρακτηριστικό που εμπεριέχεται στη δουλειά μου, αλλά κυρίως πρόκειται για ένα συνδυασμό πραγμάτων. Πιστεύω ότι το στοιχείο της απομόνωσης είναι επίσης κυρίαρχο στο σύνολο της δουλειάς μου. Αυτό που πραγματικά προσπαθώ είναι να κάνω το θεατή να έχει μια συναισθηματική σύνδεση με το θέμα της φωτογραφίας.

I would say fragility is one of the features in my work, but I would also say it’s a combination of things. I think isolation is quite prevalent throughout my work as well, what I’m really trying to do is have the viewer have an emotional connection with what is in the photograph. I want them to take time to absorb the image and look deeper into it, spend time with it, whether that be a landscape a person or a blurred shot of tree tops, it’s about a connection.

Have the Street Kids series raised any further questions about the society you live in?

Τον καιρό που φωτογράφιζα τα παιδιά των δρόμων δεν ήμουν πολύ μεγαλύτερος από τα ίδια τα παιδιά, οπότε ήμουν αρκετά τρομοκρατημένος με την κοινωνική ανοχή. Όσο μεγαλώνω έχω συνειδητοποιήσει πως η ιστορία επαναλαμβάνεται και το πιο λυπηρό είναι ότι σπάνια μαθαίνουμε από αυτήν. Πιστεύω πως είναι καθήκον μας να προσέχει ο ένας τον άλλον, έχουμε ανάγκη να επενδύσουμε στα παιδιά μας και όταν λέω παιδιά μας εννοώ τα παιδιά όλου του κόσμου. Ένα κοινό που είχαν όλα αυτά τα παιδιά μεταξύ τους ήταν η ελλιπής εκπαίδευση. Πρέπει τους παρέχουμε την απαραίτητη εκπαίδευση και δεν εννοώ να τους κάνουμε πλύση εγκεφάλου, αλλά να τους προσφέρουμε τη δυνατότητα να μορφωθούν.

At the time of shooting the street kids stuff I wasn’t much older than the kids themselves so I was quite horrified that society could allow this, but the older I have become since this project I have realized that history repeats itself over and over again and the saddest thing is we very rarely learn from it!

I think it is society’s responsibility to look after each other, we need to invest in our children and when I say our children I mean the children of the world.

The one thing all those kids had in common was limited education. We have to educate the children of the world, and I don’t mean indoctrinate I mean educate, it’s the smallest of investments with one of the most rewarding returns.

Πώς προσέγγισες τα παιδιά αυτά;

How did you approach the children?

Το πιο ζόρικο ήταν να γίνει η πρώτη επαφή και να κερδίσω την εμπιστοσύνη τους. Έχεις να κάνεις με παιδιά που αρκετά συχνά προέρχονται από βίαιες οικογένειες, άρα είναι όλα πιό δύσκολα. Αρχικά χρειάστηκε να μιλήσουμε, δεν τράβηξα ούτε μια φωτογραφία, απλά καθόμασταν όλοι κουβεντιάζοντας και καπνίζοντας. Ήταν κάποια στιγμή, που παρατήρησα ένα κάψιμο στο χέρι ενός αγοριού και τότε μου έδειξε ένα άλλο κάψιμο στο στήθος του και το έβγαλα μία φωτογραφία. Νομίζω, ότι αυτή ήταν η πρώτη φωτογραφία που τράβηξα. Σε διάστημα 2 περίπου μηνών καθόμουν με την παρέα αυτή δύο φορές την εβδομάδα. Παρόλο που είχαν συνηθίσει την παρουσία μου, δεν νομίζω ότι ένιωσαν ποτέ τους 100% άνετα με αυτό.

The hardest thing was making first contact with the kids and getting their trust. Υou are dealing with kids who quite often have come from abusive families and so don’t have a lot of trust to start with, so there was a lot of talking to start with, at first I didn’t even take a picture we all would just hang out talking and smoking cigarettes. I think there was a moment when I remarked on a burn on one of the guys hands and then he showed me his burn on his chest and I took a picture of it. I think that was the first picture. Over the course of about 2 months I’d hang out with the group a couple of times a week.

Although they got used to me being around I don’t think they were ever 100% comfortable with me being there.

Does each of your photo shoot determine your future life paths at some point?

Κάθε απόφαση που παίρνουμε τώρα, καθορίζει το τι θα μας έρθει στο μέλλον. Ακόμα και η απραγία οδηγεί σε κάποιο μονοπάτι, είναι αναπόφευκτο.

Every decision we make now determines what will be offered to us in the future. They lead us to different paths, even if we decide to do nothing, that leads us to a path, it’s unavoidable. The great thing to me in life is not knowing what path you will come to next.

Έχεις κάποιες/α εικόνες/α που είσαι περήφανος που την/τις τράβηξες;

Αυτή είναι η πιο δύσκολη ερώτηση για έναν φωτογράφο, νομίζω ότι πάντα αγαπάς την πιο πρόσφατη σου δουλειά. Πρέπει να παραδεχτώ ότι αυτές τις μέρες έχω αποσυρθεί σε μία πιο αγνή μορφή φωτογραφίας (όπως την αποκαλώ εγώ), έτσι νομίζω ότι η δουλειά μου θα τείνει πιο πολύ προς αυτή την κατεύθυνση στο μέλλον. Πιστεύω πολύ ότι η φωτογραφία έχει μετατραπεί σχεδόν σε photo-illustration ειδικά στον εμπορικό κόσμο και πραγματικά δεν είναι μία προσέγγιση που με συγκινεί ιδιαίτερα.

Do you have any image(s) that, you are proud of taking it / them?

I think that’s the hardest question for a photographer, I think you always love you most recent work . I must admit that these days I feel myself drawn back towards what I would call a purer form of photography, so I think my work will go more in that direction in the future. I think a lot of photography has become almost photo-illustration especially in the commercial world and it’s not really a look I care for that much.

Όλοι γνωρίζουν τα αθλητικά παπούτσια ως σύμβολο του στυλ και της άνεσης. Τα έχουν αγοράσει, φορέσει και λατρέψει όσο τίποτα άλλο ενώ τα έχουν δει να κυριαρχούν στον χώρο του αθλητισμού και με ευκολία να μεταπηδούν και να κατακτούν και τους χώρους της μουσικής, της τέχνης και της μόδας. Λίγοι όμως πραγματικά γνωρίζουν την ιστορία τους. Μια ιστορία γεμάτη κρυφές πτυχές. Πτυχές βαμμένες ‘πράσινες’.

Everybody knows sneakers as a symbol of style and comfort. They have been bought, worn and adored as much as nothing else, while having seen them hold sway in the field of sports and easily expanding and dominating the domain of music, art and fashion as well.

However, a few are actually aware of their story. A story full of secret facets. Facets painted ‘green’.

THE ‘ALL VEGETARIAN SHOE’. Το πρώτο κεφάλαιο στην ιστορία των ‘πράσινων παπουτσιών’ γράφεται πριν από περίπου δύο δεκαετίες στο Los Angeles, όταν δύο νεαροί skaters αφήνουν κατά μέρος τις σανίδες τους και αφοσιώνονται στο όραμα τους για την δημιουργία του πρώτου ‘All Vegetarian Shoe’. Οι εμπνευστές του δεν είναι άλλοι από τους θρύλους του skateboard, Mike Vallely και Ed Templeton, οι οποίοι βαθιά επηρεασμένοι από το τότε ανερχόμενο vegan κίνημα φιλοδοξούν να προσθέσουν μια οικολογική νότα σε μια βιομηχανία που βασίζεται κυρίως στην εκμετάλλευση των ζώων για πρώτες ύλες. Χρησιμοποιώντας μη-ζωικά υλικά όπως βέλκρο, πολυεστέρα και νάιλον για το σώμα και καουτσούκ για τις σόλες, επιτυγχάνουν να δημιουργήσουν την πρώτη αποκλειστικά ‘πράσινη’ σειρά αθλητικών παπουτσιών παγκοσμίως με την επωνυμία Zero Two. Την στήριξη τους σε αυτό το φιλόδοξο εγχείρημα, σπεύδουν να δηλώσουν και άλλα μεγάλα ονόματα από τον χώρο του skateboard όπως οι Brian Lotti και Sean Sheffey , οι οποίοι από κοινού με τους δημιουργούς αναλαμβάνουν την προώθηση της νέας εταιρίας. Σύμμαχοι σε αυτή την προσπάθεια, μια σειρά από ευρηματικές και άκρως αμφιλεγόμενες διαφημίσεις με την αρχή να κάνει το νέο λογότυπο της εταιρίας που αποτελείται από μια αγελάδα συνοδευόμενη από το ωμό slogan “Thank You For Not Killing Me”. Η Zero Two δεν αργεί να βρει τον δρόμο της στις καρδιές των καταναλωτών καθώς και στα μεγάλα περιοδικά της εποχής, όπου πια έχει επιστρατευτεί πιο σκληρό μάρκετινγκ από ποτέ με τις διαφημίσεις να βάζουν στο στόχαστρο οποιαδήποτε εταιρία συσχετίζεται με την εκμετάλλευση ζώων. Η επιτυχημένη πορεία της εταιρίας συνεχίζεται με ανοδικούς ρυθμούς για δυο ακόμη χρόνια ώσπου μια διαφωνία το 1992 αναγκάζει τους δημιουργούς της να την εγκαταλείψουν, με αποτέλεσμα η Zero Two να εξαφανιστεί με τον ίδιο εκρηκτικό τρόπο που εμφανίστηκε.

GO GREEN – THE WORLD TODAY Το 2012 βρίσκει το vegan κίνημα πιο δυνατό από ποτέ, με μερικά από τα μεγαλύτερα brands αθλητικών ειδών να έχουν υιοθετήσει και επισήμως ένα πιο ‘πράσινο’ τρόπο σκέψης είτε με ειδικές vegan συλλογές είτε με οργανωμένα προγράμματα ανακύκλωσης σε συνεργασία με οικολογικές οργανώσεις. Οι Adidas, Nike, Converse, Puma, Vans , Sketchers, New Balance και ΜcBeth είναι μόνο μερικές από τις εταιρίες που πήραν την πρωτοβουλία να αντικαταστήσουν τα δερμάτινα προϊόντα τους με άλλα περισσότερο φιλικά προς το περιβάλλον υλικά όπως faux suede, κάνναβη, φελλό, ξύλο, συνθετική γούνα, μπροκάρ, βινύλιο και πλαστικό, με τις Adidas και Nike να χρησιμοποιούν και υλικά που έχουν προέλθει από την ανακύκλωση άλλων παλαιότερων αθλητικών. Συγκεκριμένα, το 2007 η Adidas Group ξεκίνησε τις προσπάθειες για την δημιουργία μιας οικολογικής σειράς προϊόντων η οποία θα διέθετε το χαρακτηριστικό ύφος και ποιότητα της εταιρίας ενώ παράλληλα θα συνεισέφερε στην μείωση της περιβαλλοντικής μόλυνσης μέσω της χρήσης φυσικών υλικών καθώς και της ανακύκλωσης. Η σειρά έκανε την εμφάνιση της μόλις ένα χρόνο αργότερο ως Grün (πράσινο στα Γερμανικά), παρουσιάζοντας τρεις βασικές ομάδες, την Reground με προϊόντα κατασκευασμένα από φυτικά υλικά , την Recycled από ανακυκλωμένα υλικά και τέλος την Made From από ειδικά επεξεργασμένες μικρό-ίνες. Στον ίδιο οικολογικό πυρετό μόλις λίγα χρόνια πριν, το 2005, η Nike δημιούργησε την επιτυχημένη σειρά Considered η οποία βραβεύτηκε το 2006 και το 2007 στα Ιnternational Design Excellence Awards για την επιτυχία της να συνδυάσει τις παραδοσιακές σιλουέτες των Nike παπουτσιών με ένα πιο φρέσκο και περιβαλλοντικά φιλικό στυλ. Η Considered, με την επιλογή της να χρησιμοποιεί μόνο ανακυκλωμένα και φυτικά υλικά, είναι ίσως η πρώτη σειρά μετά την Zero Two που κατάφερε να μείνει πιστή στο όραμα του vegan shoe. Αυτή όμως δεν είναι η πρώτη φορά που η ΝΙΚΕ καινοτομεί καθώς το 1990 με το μότο ‘Worn out. Play on –Turn your old sport shoes into places to play’ ιδρύει το πρόγραμμα ανακύκλωσης Reuse-A-Shoe το οποίο δίνει την δυνατότητα σε παλιά παπούτσια να ‘αναγεννηθούν’ είτε ως καινούργια είτε ως αθλητικά δάπεδα και εξοπλισμός γηπέδων. Το πρόγραμμα ReUse , το οποίο πρόσφατα υιοθέτησε και η Converse, έχει καταφέρει να συλλέξει πάνω από 25,249,000 αθλητικά στα χρόνια που μετρά η δράση του, εκ των οποίων 1.5 εκατομμύριο ζευγάρια μοναχά τον τελευταίο χρόνο. Με την Nike και την Adidas να δίνουν το ‘καλό παράδειγμα’ και ολοένα και περισσότερες εταιρίες να νιώθουν την ανάγκη να συμμετέχουν με παρόμοια προγράμματα και άλλες οικολογικές επιλογές για τα προϊόντα τους, φυσικό ήταν να μην μείνει ανεπηρέαστος και ο χώρος της υψηλής ραπτικής με οίκους όπως Stella McCartney , Olsen Haus ακόμα και Dior να δίνουν ‘πράσινο’ χαρακτήρα σε ειδικές σειρές παπουτσιών τους. Τελικά υπάρχει παράδεισος και για τα παπούτσια (και αν έχουν φτερά ο Jeremy Scott το σκέφτηκε πρώτος).

THE ‘ALL VEGETARIAN SHOE’.

The first chapter in the history of ‘green shoes’ is written about two decades ago in Los Angeles, when two young skaters leave aside their boards and focus on their vision to create the first ‘All Vegeterian Shoe’. Their instigators couldn’t be anyone else other than the legends of skateboarding, Mike Vallely and Ed Templeton, who , deeply inspired by the up-and- coming vegan movement of that time already, aspire to add an ecological touch in an industry, which is mostly based on the exploitation of animals for their raw material.

By using non- animal material like Velcro, polyester and nylon for the body and rubber for the soles, they manage to create the first exclusively ‘green’ collection of sneakers worldwide under the label Zero Two. Their support to this aspiring venture hasten to declare other big names from the skateboard turf like Brian Lotti and Sean Sheffey, who in collaboration with its creators undertake the promotion of the new company. An ally in this attempt is also found to be a series of imaginative and highly controversial ad starting from the new logo of the company which included a cow and the raw tagline “Thank You For Not Killing Me”. It doesn’t take long for Zero Two to find its way towards the consumers’ hearts as well as towards the big magazines of that time, while at the same time a harsh marketing campaign has been contrived with ads against every company associated with animal exploitation. This successful course of the company continues upwards for two more years until an argument in 1992 forces its creators to call it quits. As a result, Zero Two is vanished in the same explosive way it came to be.

GO GREEN - THE WORLD TODAY 2012 finds this movement stronger than ever, with some of the biggest brands of sportswear having (officially now) adopted a more ‘green’ way of thinking either with special vegan collections or with organised recycling programmes in collaboration with ecological organisations. Adidas, Nike, Converse, Puma, Vans, Sketchers, New Balance and McBeth ,to name a few, belong to the companies which took the initiative to replace their leather products with more environmentally- friendly materials like faux suede, cannabis, cork, wood, synthetic fur, brocade, vinyl and plastic, while Adidas and Nike use also recyclingbased material from older sneakers. Specifically, in 2007 Adidas Group initiated its attempts to create an ecological production line, which would feature a characteristic style and quality of the company, when at the same time would contribute to the decline of environmental pollution through the use of natural material as well as through recycling. This line appeared just one year later as ‘grün’ (green in German), presenting three basic teams; ‘Reground’ with products made of vegetable materials, ‘Recycled’ from recycled material and finally ‘Made From’ from especially processed microfibers. In the same ecological mayhem just a few years ago, in 2005, Nike created the successful collection ‘Considered’ which was awarded in 2006 and 2007 at the International Design Excellence Awards for its success to pair traditional silhouettes of Nike shoes with a more fresh and environmentally- friendly style. ‘Considered’, with its choice to use only recycled and vegetable material, maybe is the first collection after Zero Two which managed to remain faithful to the vegan shoe vision. This is not, however, the first time that NIKE pioneers as in 1990 under the motto ‘Worn out. Play on- Turn your old shoes into places to play’ it founds the recycling programme Reuse-A-Shoe, which provides with the possibility to old shoes to be ’reborn’ either as brand new or as athletic floors and sports ground equipment. ReUse programme, which Converse recently adopted too, has managed to collect more than 25,249,000 sneakers during its operation time, of which 1,5 million pairs were collected last year. With Nike and Adidas setting a good example and even more companies feeling the urge to participate in similar programmes and other ecological choices for their products, it is not surprising that the world of haute couture like Stella McCartney, Olsen Haus, even Dior, is applying a more ‘green’ character in special shoe collections. Finally there is heaven for shoes too (and if they do have wings Jeremy Scott thought it first).

Ο Νίκος Σκαρέντζος συνεχίζει με τα «Ανοιχτά Μικρόφωνα», από εκεί που σταμάτησε με το ντοκιμαντέρ του «Ρυθμοί & Ρίμες», χαρτογραφώντας την αχανή ελληνική hip hop σκηνή και τέμνοντας τις παράλληλες διαδρομές μιας κοινωνίας σε κρίση και μιας γενιάς που αντιδρά κάνοντας την οργή της...μουσική!

Nikos Skarentzos continues with ‘Open Microphones’ from where he had stopped with his previous documentary ‘Rhythms and Rhymes’, charting this vast Greek hip hop scene and stressing the parallel paths between a society in crisis and a generation that reacts by turning its rage into…music! Τι είναι αυτό που σας έκανε να ενδιαφερθείτε εξ αρχής για την ελληνική hip hop σκηνή, ώστε να την αφιερώσετε μέχρι σήμερα δύο ντοκιμαντέρ, το «Ρυθμοί & Ρίμες»και τα «Ανοιχτά Μικρόφωνα;

Υπήρξα λάτρης της hip hop μουσικής από το ξεκίνημά της, στα τέλη του 1970. Μετά την παράτησα και την ξανασυνάντησα στην άνθιση που γνώρισε στα τέλη του 80 με τους Beastie Boys, τους Run DMC, τους Public Enemy. Την εγκατέλειψα ξανά για να επιστρέψω σε αυτήν το 2000 με τους Roots. Με ενδιέφερε η ελληνική σκηνή και ήθελα να την εξερευνήσω πιστεύοντας ότι τα hip hop γκρουπ θα ήταν πολύ λίγα. Διαψεύσθηκαν. Όταν ξεκίνησα να κάνω την έρευνα μου για το «Ρυθμοί & Ρίμες» υπήρχαν 15 με 20 γκρουπ Μέσα στα επόμενα χρόνια και μέχρι να κάνω τα «Ανοιχτά Μικρόφωνα» ο αριθμός αυτός δεκαπλασιάστηκε. Το στοιχείο που μου κέντρισε το ενδιαφέρον είναι πως η ελληνική hip hop σκηνή είναι μια από τις πιο πολιτικοποιημένες σε όλον τον κόσμο και πως ενώ η αγγλική γλώσσα προσφέρεται περισσότερο για το ραπ, οι έλληνες hip hopers με εντυπωσίασαν με τη στιχουργική τους και τον τρόπο που ριμάρουν με πολυσύλλαβες λέξεις, αλλά παραμένουν πάντα στο μέτρο. Το hip hop είναι μια κατεξοχήν πολιτική «σκηνή». Πόση από αυτήν την πολιτική βρίσκουμε στα ντοκιμαντέρ σας;

Το «Ρυθμοί & Ρίμες» ήταν περισσότερο κάτι σαν εισαγωγή στην ελληνική hip hop σκηνή. Σκοπός μου ήταν να αναδείξω όλους αυτούς τους ανεξάρτητους καλλιτέχνες και τα γκρουπ που την αποτελούν. Τα «Ανοιχτά Μικρόφωνα» είναι πιο πολιτικό. Δείχνει την ίδια σκηνή σε αντιδιαστολή με ανθρώπους της προηγούμενης γενιάς – ουσιαστικά αυτής που οι hip hopers θεωρούν υπεύθυνη για την οργή τους – σαν μια σταγόνα ελπίδας στο χάος της απάθειας που επικρατεί σήμερα στη χώρα. Υπήρξαν πράγματα που δεν γνωρίζατε ή είχατε παρεξηγήσει και που στη συνάντηση σας με αυτή τη σκηνή μάθατε ή κατανοήσατε καλύτερα;

Το σημαντικότερο πράγμα που έμαθα ήταν ότι κανένας απ’ όσους αποτελούν τη σκηνή δεν ζει από το hip-hop. Γράφουν μουσική και φτιάχνουν ρίμες ορμώμενοι από μια ανάγκη που νιώθουν να εκφράσουν πράγματα, να σχολιάσουν όσα συμβαίνουν γύρω τους, να αναπνεύσουν. Πόσο μπορεί η ελληνική σκηνή του hip-hop να ξεπεράσει τα όρια του να γίνει μια μουσική «της μόδας» και να παραμένει στην ουσία της όπως ξεκίνησε, ως μια μορφή αντίδρασης των νέων;

Στην πραγματικότητα το hip hop δεν ήταν ποτέ στην μόδα στην Ελλάδα. Υπήρξε μια εποχή γύρω στο 1995 με 1998 που, ναι, τα Ημισκούμπρια και άλλα λιγότερο γνωστά συγκροτήματα, πουλούσαν αστρονομικά νούμερα δίσκων, αλλά αυτό δεν συνεχίστηκε. Σήμερα το ελληνικό hip hop δεν βρίσκεται στην καλύτερη του φάση. Πόσο εύκολο ήταν να μπείτε στο σύμπαν των ανθρώπων που κάνουν hip-hop στην Ελλάδα;

Γνώρισα από κοντά όλη τη σκηνή, πηγαίνοντας σε συναυλίες και συνομιλώντας με τους καλλιτέχνες. Αν δεν γνωρίζεις που να ψάξεις, δεν είναι καθόλου εύκολο να ανακαλύψεις το εύρος της hip hop ελληνικής σκηνής. Τα τραγούδια τους δεν ακούγονται στο ραδιόφωνο, οι δίσκοι τους κυκλοφορούν σε πολύ λίγα αντίτυπα που συνήθως τα πουλάνε ή τα μοιράζουν δωρεάν στα live. Κατάλαβαν από νωρίς πως μπορούσαν να με εμπιστευθούν. Πως ήμουν κάποιος που γνώριζε καλά τι σημαίνει hip hop και πως δεν είχα σκοπό να τους εκμεταλλευθώ αλλά να μεταφέρω την αλήθεια τους. Ποια η σημασία ενός ντοκιμαντέρ όπως τα «Ανοιχτά Μικρόφωνα» σε μια εποχή κρίσης; Πιστεύετε πως η μουσική, ο κινηματογράφος, γενικότερα η Τέχνη μπορεί να είναι μια έξοδος απ’ αυτήν;

Για μένα μοιάζει η μόνη ελπίδα. Η ελληνική hip hop σκηνή μοιάζει απόλυτα in tune με όλα όσα συμβαίνουν γύρω μας. Στην πραγματικότητα είναι οι μόνοι καλλιτέχνες που σχολιάζουν άμεσα και με δυναμισμό αυτό μας συμβαίνει. Οι υπόλοιποι μοιάζουν να απέχουν. Σαν να μην τους αφορά η κατάσταση σήμερα στην Ελλάδα και τον κόσμο. Που βρίσκονται όλοι; Τα «Ανοιχτά Μικρόφωνα» του Νίκου Σκαρέντζου προβάλλονται στις αίθουσες από τις 19 Απριλίου.

What made you get so interested from the beginning in the Greek hip hop scene, that you devoted until today two documentaries to it, ‘Rhythms and Rhymes’ (2008) and ‘Open Microphones’ (2011)?

I was fond of hip hop music from its early beginning, at the end of the 70s. Then I ‘abandoned’ it and regained contact at the end of the 80s, when it flourished again with Beastie Boys, Run DMC, Public Enemy. I ‘abandoned’ it again only to return in 2000 with Roots. I was interested in the Greek scene and wanted to explore it having in mind that hip hop groups are only a few. I was proved wrong. When I started my research for ‘Rhythms & Rhymes’, there were 15 to 20 groups.

Within the next years and until the creation of ‘Open Microphones’ this number multiplied ten times! What caught my attention most is that the Greek hip hop scene is one of the most politically active on a global scale and that although the English language is the most frequent one in hip hop, Greek hip hopers knocked me sideways with their metric and the way they rhyme with polysyllabic words without losing the metre.

Hip hop is par excellence a political stage. Is this element seen in your documentary too?

‘Rhythms & Rhymes’ was more like an introduction to the Greek hip hop scene. My goal was to project all those independent artists and the groups that constitute Greek hip hop. ‘Open Microphones’ is more political. It shows the scene itself and sets it in contrast to people of the previous generation- essentially the generation, which hip hopers consider accountable for their rage- . It is shown as a shine of hope in this mayhem of apathy that prevails nowadays.

Have there been things you were unaware of or you had misunderstood and thanks to getting to know the hip hop scene better, you changed your mind?

The most important thing I learnt was that no hip hoper gets by only from hip hop. They write music and make rhymes urged from the need to express things, to comment on what happens around us, to breath.

How far do you think that the Greek hip hop scene can transcend its boundaries and become a music of popular culture, without necessarily changing its essence, which is being a form of reaction for youngsters?

Actually, hip hop was never in fashion in Greece. There was a time, around 1995-1998, when Imiskoumbria and other less renowned groups were selling extraordinary numbers of discs, but this trend didn’t continue. Nowadays, Greek hip hop is not found at its best.

Is it easy to enter the world of hip hopers in Greece?

I got to know the whole hip hop scene by going to concerts and by talking with artists. If you don’t meet people and do your research, it is not easy to get to know the whole range of the Greek hip hop scene as their songs are not heard in the radio, their albums come out in a limited number of copies, which are usually sold or given for free in their live shows. Those guys understood from the beginning that they could trust me. That I was a person who knew very well what hip hop means and didn’t want to take advantage of them but convey their truth.

Which is the importance of a documentary like ‘Open Microphones’ in a period of economic crisis? Do you believe that music, cinema, Art in general, could be a fine way out?

The way I see it, it is the only hope. Greek hip hop scene totally resembles in tune all the things that happen around us. Actually, they are the only artists that comment bluntly and dynamically on what is going on. The rest seem to remain aloof. As if this situation in Greece and worldwide does not bother them. Where are all these people?

Ο Ορέστης Λαζούρας από την Κύπρο, μόλις 17 χρονών είναι ήδη γνωστός για τα παιχνιδιάρικα fashion κολάζ του. Γι’ αυτό το τεύχος δημιούργησε μια εικονογράφηση εμπνευσμένη από τις αντιθέσεις ανάμεσα στο φυσικό περιβάλλον και την πόλη χρησιμοποιώντας μερικά από τα αγαπημένα μας sneakers. Ο Ορέστης μιλά για το ενδιαφέρον του για τον κόσμο των καλών τεχνών, ενώ ονειρεύεται ότι κάποια στιγμή στο μέλλον θα ζει αποκλειστικά και μόνο μέσα σ’ αυτόν.

Cypriot Orestis Lazouras, at the age of 17 is already known for his funky fashion collages. For this issue he has created a piece inspired from the contradictions generated between the natural surroundings and the urban environment using some of our favorite sneakers. Orestis, is talking about his interest in the world of arts, while daydreaming that, one day in the close future, he will be part of it. Πώς ξεκίνησε η μανία σου με το κολάζ;

How did this whole collage-mania begin?

Όταν άρχισα να ασχολούμαι με το blog μου, ένιωθα ότι το υλικό μου ήταν χλιαρό. Τότε ασχολήθηκα και με το tumblr, το οποίο με ενέπνευσε και με γέμισε με πολλές καινούργιες ιδέες για νέα, πιο ενδιαφέροντα, κατά την άποψή μου, έργα. Όταν, λοιπόν, πρωτοήρθα σε επαφή με το κολάζ, με συνεπήρε το πόσο εύκολα μπορεί κανείς να δημιουργήσει ένα όμορφο αποτέλεσμα μ’ αυτά, χωρίς όμως να φαίνεται πρόχειρο.

When I started working on my blog, I felt that the material I was offering was wishy-washy. So I got involved with tumbir too, which inspired me and filled me with fresh ideas for brand new and more interesting, to my mind, pieces of work. In my first contact with collages, I was fascinated with how easily you can create something beautiful with them, without making it look makeshift.

Από τι εμπνεύστηκες για το κολάζ που δημιούργησες για το τεύχος μας;

What gave you inspiration for the collage you created in our issue? What attracts your attention in order to create a new collage?

Ήθελα να οπτικοποιήσω τις αντιθέσεις που προκύπτουν από τη συνύπαρξη του φυσικού περιβάλλοντος και του αστικού τοπίου.

My main inspiration came from the city life, where organic forms are juxtaposed with something more urban.

Fashion design, fashion styling και fine arts, ποιό από τα τρία θα επέλεγες τελικά;

Fashion design, fashion styling and fine art, which one do you choose?

Δύσκολο να διαλέξω ένα απ’ αυτά, μιας και το κάθε ένα έχει την δίκη του χάρη. Η ιδέα του fashion design με ενθουσιάζει άλλα ταυτόχρονα με φοβίζει. Παλιά θεωρούσα ότι η μόδα ήταν ο προορισμός μου, όμως τον τελευταίο καιρό ανακάλυψα την ομορφιά των καλών τεχνών και έτσι μπορώ να πω ότι, προς το παρόν, εκεί κατευθύνομαι. Ενώ θεωρώ οτι το styling είναι μια περιπέτεια, η οποία δίνει νέες προοπτικές στη δουλεία σου. Μακάρι να έχω την τύχη να μπορέσω να σπουδάσω κάποια από αυτές τις τέχνες. Το ιδανικό βέβαια θα ήταν ο συνδυασμός τους. Έχεις παρατηρήσει κάποιου είδους ‘επανάσταση’ στον τρόπο με τον οποίο φοράμε τελευταία τα sneakers μας;

Τα sneakers είναι η ίδια η επανάσταση, αφού προσφέρουν άνεση και μια urban νότα στο καθημερινό μας ντύσιμο. Tον τελευταίο καιρό παρατηρώ συνδυασμούς, που θυμίζουν πολύ τη νεολαία των 80’s και κυριότερα αυτή των 90’s. Ποια είναι τα μελλοντικά σου σχέδια;

Tough decision, each one has its charm. The fashion designer idea fascinates me but intimidates me at the same time. Earlier, I used to consider fashion as my destination, but lately I discovered the beauty of Fine Arts and now I can say that, for the time being, this is where I’m heading at. Nevertheless, I see styling as an adventure, which gives new perspectives at your job. I wish I had the luck to study one of these arts. The ideal, of course, would be to combine them.

Have you observed any kind of ‘revolution’ in the way that sneakers are lately worn?

Sneakers is a revolution of its own, since they give comfort and an urban touch on our daily outfit. Recently I prefer new trends which remind a lot of the 80s and mostly the 90s youth.

Tell us about your future plans!

For the time being I don’t want to think about the future, but stick to the present, as so many beautiful things take place and I want to include them in my creations. If I think about the future this opportunity will be missed.

Μπαίνοντας στο site του label FreakerSNEAKS του ‘Ελληνα handmade sneaker artist Jonny Barry με έδρα την Αθήνα δεν εντυπωσιάζομαι από τις display φωτογραφίες με τα μοναδικά του παπούτσια που θυμίζουν περισσότερο γλυπτά κάποιας γκαλερί. Ούτε καν από το γεγονός ότι η ιστορία του δεν ξεκινάει τώρα αλλά πίσω στο 2004 όπου ένας τραυματισμός στο μπάσκετ ήταν το έναυσμα για να επικεντρωθεί στα sneakers και να γίνει ίσως ο μοναδικός στην Ελλάδα στον χώρο αυτό. Γοητεύομαι μόνο από το γεγονός ότι από την πρώτη στιγμή αντιλαμβάνεσαι πως έχεις να κάνεις με κάποιον που ασχολείται με μεγάλο πάθος με ό,τι αποφασίζει να κάνει παραβλέποντας οτιδήποτε άλλο και συγκρατώ τις παρακάτω φράσεις του: «We are defined by the shoes we wear, you are judged from the feet up... so make sure you are portraying the right message about yourself».

As I enter the site of FreakerSNEAKS label by the Greek handmade sneaker artist Jonny Barry, who is based in Athens, I am not initially impressed by his display photos with his one-of-a-kind shoes, which remind you more of gallery sculptures, let alone by the fact that his story is not new, but dates back in 2004, when an injury deprived him of a professional career as a basketball player (although this acted as a springboard for him to focus completely on his lifelong love, sneakers, and become the only handmade sneaker artist in Greece.) What fascinates me, however, is that from the very first moment you realise that you have a person who knuckles down with passion to everything he decides to do ignoring anything else. What I keep from his words is: ‘We are defined by the shoes we wear, you are judged from the feet up... so make sure you are portraying the right message about yourself ’. Μπορεί να έρθει ο οποιοσδήποτε και να αποκτήσει τα μοναδικά sneakers που ονειρευέται ή δουλεύεις αποκλειστικά με collabs με άλλους artists και καταστήματα/εταιρίες;

Is the workshop normally open for the public? Can anybody come and get those unique sneakers of his dreams or do you work exclusively with collabs , other artists and stores/labels?

Βεβαίως, ο καθένας έχει την ευκαιρία να αποκτήσει ένα ζευγάρι FreakerSNEAKS! Υπάρχει η χαμηλή γκάμα στην οποία η μετατροπή/δουλειά είναι λιγότερη, ούτως ώστε να είναι πιο προσιτά σε περισσότερο κόσμο. Επίσης υπάρχει και το ‘Masterpiece’ range, δηλαδή η γκάμα ‘Αριστουργήματος’ για να μένουν ευχαριστημένοι οι celebrities και όσοι διαθέτουν cash. Η τέχνη είναι για όλους και πρέπει να ‘φτάνει’ σε όλους όσους την αγαπούν και όχι μόνο σε αυτούς που διαθέτουν πολλά χρήματα!

Ποιο είναι το πιο ακριβό και πολύτιμο sneaker που έχεις δημιουργήσει και γιατί;

Αυτό θα ήταν το ζευγάρι που έχω ονομάσει ‘The Rise - Η Ανατολή’. Το ονόμασα έτσι γιατί ήθελα να μαρκάρω την αλλαγή στον τρόπο σκέψης μου για την δουλειά μου και γενικότερα στην κατεύθυνση που ήθελα να πάρω. Από εκείνο το σημείο και μετά όλα είχαν να κάνουν με το να ‘ανέβω’ στην κορυφή ως Sneaker Customizer. Κάτι που αξίζει να αναφερθεί για αυτό το ζευγάρι είναι ότι εκτός από τις λεπτομέρειες που είναι ζωγραφισμένες με 24 καράτια αληθινό χρυσό, τα 14 καρατίων κορδόνια έβγαλαν από την τσέπη μου σχεδόν 1200 euro! Είσαι κάποιος o οποίος συλλέγει sneakers με τον παλιό και αυθεντικό τρόπο τou sneaker hunting. Στην σημερινή εποχή τα πράγματα έχουν αλλάξει με την παγκοσμιοποιημένη αγορά όπου όλα γίνονται εύκολα και γρήγορα αρκεί κάνεις να έχει αρκετό cash. Mήπως όμως έτσι χάθηκε το σημαντικότερο δηλαδή η underground σκηνή και ο ρομαντισμός για τα sneakers; Eίναι αυτός ο λόγος που τα τελευταία χρόνια έχεις εστιάσει στο customizing και όχι τόσο στη συλλογή παπουτσιών;

Αυτό είναι ένα μεγάλο θέμα και ναι υπήρξα sneakerhead από όταν ήμουν στην κοιλιά της μάνας μου αλλά θα απαντήσω με λίγα λόγια: Oι Public Enemy κάποτε είπαν δυνατά «DON’T BELIEVE THE HYPE!». Τα sneaker sites είναι μία βιομηχανία πλέον και δημιουργούν τόσο πολύ ντόρο για ένα sneaker που σε μετατρέπουν σε πρόβατο πείθοντας σε με κάθε τρόπο να το αγοράσεις. Κουράστηκα με όλο αυτό και για να είμαι ειλικρινής δεν μπορούσα να το ακολουθήσω άλλο. Η ζωή είναι πιο εύκολη τώρα! Αγαπώ τα classic sneakers αλλά δεν με ενδιαφέρουν τόσο τα νέα releases. Σκοπός μου είναι να φτάσω το sneaker customization εκεί που πρέπει ώστε να πάρει την αναγνώριση που θα έπρεπε. Απλά παίζω το ρόλο μου... Μπασκετάκι παίζεις ακόμη; Σε προκαλώ σε ένα 1on1 αλλά εάν νικήσω θέλω τα επόμενα handmade sneakers μου με θέμα τα playgrounds for free...

Mέσα! Επειδή όμως θα σε νικήσω, τι κερδίζω εγώ; Φύγαμε!

Which is the most expensive and precious sneaker you’ve ever made and why?

That must have been the pair I named ‘The Rise’. I chose this name because I wanted to mark this change on my way of thinking about work and generally about the paths I wanted to follow. From that moment on, everything had to do with ‘rising’ to the top as a Sneaker Customizer. Something worth mentioning about this pair is that apart from its details, which are drawn with 24 carats of pure gold, the 14 -carat laces cost me almost 1200 euros!

You are someone who collects sneakers in the old authentic way of sneaker hunting. Nowadays, things have changed leading to a globalised market, where everything happens easily and fast as long as you have enough cash. Do you believe that the consequence is to lose the most important thing, namely the underground scene and this romanticism towards sneakers? Is this actually the reason that you have focused on customizing and not so much on sneakers collecting?

This is a big issue and ,yes, I’ve been a sneakerhead since I was in my mothers womb but I will answer in a laconic way; Public Enemy once screamed out loud ‘DON’T BELIEVE THE HYPE!’. Sneaker sites are now just an industry and they make all this fuss for just one pair, so that they transform you into sheep and convince you to buy it. I’m sick and tired of all this and to be honest I couldn’t cope with that anymore. Life is easier now! I love classic sneakers but I’m not that interested into the new releases. My goal is to reach sneaker customization where it should be, so that it gets its props, the way it deserves it. I’m just playing my part…

Do you still play basketball? I dare you on a 1on1 but if I win I want my next handmade sneakers playgrounds as their theme for free…

The term ‘sneaker/sportstyle shop’ or ‘street boutique’ stands for a local refined shop, which differs not only on an aesthetic but also on a commercial level from the rest of the stores and participates in artistic events of the city it belongs to. In our country those terms are still unknown, however over the last years young people try through their work to change that by promoting not only sneakers, but also their inextricable relationship with music, arts, sports and ,of course, the broader street culture scene. OZON Raw met with the managers of 3 shops in Athens, to which, if you are fond of distinctive shoe models, you should definitely pay a visit.

Η ενασχόληση μου επαγγελματικά ξεκίνησε το 2007. Ο βασικός λόγος ήταν ότι θεωρούσα ντροπή το γεγονός πως υπήρχε κόσμος που αγόραζε sneakers από το εξωτερικό, μέσα σε αυτούς και εγώ, επειδή δεν μπορούσε να βρει τα παπούτσια που ήθελε στην Ελλάδα. Κάπως έτσι έκανα το εφηβικό μου χόμπι επάγγελμα. Πιστεύω ότι ο κόσμος συνεχίζει να καταναλώνει αλλά λιγότερο και πιο επιλεκτικά και έτσι στρέφεται σε πιο ιδιαίτερα προϊόντα Στο εξωτερικό, η υψηλή ζήτηση του κόσμου για συγκεκριμένα limited edition sneakers τον οδηγούν πολλές φορές να σχηματίζει τεράστιες ουρές για να έχει τη δυνατότητα να τα αγοράσει στην κανονική τους τιμή, επειδή διαφορετικά θα δυσκολευτεί να τα βρει και θα αναγκαστεί να τα πληρώσει πολύ ακριβά. Ποια είναι η πιο ενδιαφέρουσα ιστορία που μπορείς να μας διηγηθείς πίσω από την απόκτηση ενός παπουτσιού;

Δεν έχω κάποια ιστορία να σας διηγηθώ απλά μπορώ να σας πω με βεβαιότητα ότι ακόμα νιώθω σαν μικρό παιδί κάθε φορά που αποκτώ ένα καινούργιο ζευγάρι sneakers ή ένα ζευγάρι που λείπει από τη συλλογή μου. Ποιο θεωρείς το release της χρονιάς και γιατί;

Σίγουρα τα Nike Air Foamposite NRG One ή αλλιώς γνωστά ως ‘Galaxy’. Είναι ένα από τα ωραιότερα μπασκετικά μοντέλα της Nike και αυτός ο νέος χρωματισμός είναι πραγματικά μοναδικός.

When did you start getting involved and why did you choose sneakers as the main items to trade?

My professional involvement in this business began in 2007. The main reason was that I considered it a shame, that so many people, including me, bought sneakers from abroad because they could’t find the pair of shoes they wanted in Greece. So, in this way, my puberty hobby became my profession.

Despite the crisis, sneakers mania increases at a frenetic pace regarding that hordes of people are looking forward to specific releases ,even at camps, days before they come out in the market, how do you explain that?

I believe that people still consume but less and in a more choosy way, so they tend to choose more special items. Abroad, due to high demand for specific limited edition sneakers, many times huge hordes of people are formed in order to obtain them in their normal price, or else they will have difficulties in finding them and when they will, their price will be very steep.

Which is the most interesting story you could tell us about getting a pair of shoes?

I don’t have any story in mind, but I can only tell you with certainty that I still feel as a child everytime I get a new pair of sneakers or a pair that misses from my collection.

Which model do you consider as the release of the year and why?

Definitely Nike Air Foamposite NRG aka ‘Galaxy’. It is one of the most b-ball style models by NIKE and the new colorways are truly unique.

Η αγάπη μου για τα sneakers ξεκινάει από τα εφηβικά χρόνια, αποτελεί όμως και την επαγγελματική μου ασχολία από το 2004, αρχικά με την αντιπροσώπευση εταιριών του χώρου στην Ελλάδα και παράλληλα με το ‘Ministry Of Concrete’ του οποίου η ίδρυση είχε σκοπό να επηρεάσουμε τα δρώμενα της εγχώριας urban fashion σκηνής. Παρά την οικονομική κρίση, η μανία των sneakers όλο και αυξάνεται με ακραίες καταστάσεις όπου ουρές ανθρώπων περιμένουν συγκεκριμένα releases ακόμη και σε camps μέρες πριν βγουν στην αγορά, πώς το εξηγείς αυτό;

Είναι ένα ρεύμα που έχει πάρει τεράστιες διαστάσεις, κι αυτό όχι με μόνο παράγοντα το κοινό των απανταχού sneakerheads, αλλά και τις ίδιες τις εταιρίες, οι οποίες όταν διέκριναν την εν λόγω έξαρση, έσπευσαν να την διεγείρουν με διάφορα marketing tricks. Σαν κουλτούρα γεννήθηκε από την φτωχή μαύρη κοινότητα των ΗΠΑ και καλλιεργήθηκε σαν ρομαντικός φετιχισμός, οπότε και δε μου κάνει εντύπωση που ακμάζει σε αυτές τις αντίξοες οικονομικά εποχές. Ποια είναι η πιο ενδιαφέρουσα ιστορία που μπορείς να μας διηγηθείς πίσω από την απόκτηση ενός παπουτσιού;

Μια μέρα με συνάντησε στο δρόμο ένας μεγαλύτερος ξάδερφος μου ο οποίος μου κόλλησε το μικρόβιο του skater, ζητώντας μου ένα ollie. Καθότι δεν έμεινε ευχαριστημένος από τις επιδόσεις μου, μου έταξε ένα ζευγάρι ‘The One’ της Airwalk αν κατάφερνα να πηδήξω πάνω από έναν κάδο. Ο αγώνας μου για να το αποκτήσω κράτησε τρεις εβδομάδες. Δεκαέξι χρόνια μετά, υπάρχουν φορές που κοιτάζοντας τα sneakers αυτά, θυμάμαι τις καλές εκείνες εποχές. Ποιο θεωρείς το release της χρονιάς και γιατί;

Το πιο ground-breaking sneaker για φέτος είναι το Skytop III της Supra. Φουτουριστικά colorways σε συνδυασμό με στοιχεία από retro classics, όπως τα Nike Presto & Jordan Spizike, κάνουν το Skytop III τη μόνη ενδιαφέρουσα πρόταση από μέρους της βιομηχανίας του skateboarding, που κάποτε έθετε τους κανόνες του street style, ενώ πλέον τους ακολουθεί.

When did you start getting involved and why did you choose sneakers as the main items to trade?

My love for sneakers dates back from my adolescent years, but became part of my occupational work since 2004, initially by representing industries of the field in Greece and at the same time with ‘Ministry Of Concrete’, whose establishment was aiming at influencing the activities of the Greek urban fashion scene.

Despite the crisis, sneakers mania increases at a frenetic pace regarding that hordes of people are looking forward to specific releases ,even at camps, days before they come out in the market, how do you explain that?

It is a trend that has been expanded in leaps and bounds not only because of the all-pervasive ‘sneakerheads’, but also because of the companies themselves, as when they discerned how much popular this trend became, they hastened to boost it with various marketing tricks. As a culture it first appeared within the abject black community of USA and developed as a romantic fetishism, so no wonder that it thrives still under so adverse economic conditions.

Which is the most interesting story you could tell us about getting a pair of shoes?

One day I bumped into an elder cousin, who had gotten completely hooked on with skating and asked me to do an ollie. Although he was not satisfied with my effort, he promised to get me a pair of ‘The One’ by Airwalk if I managed to jump over a dustbin. My struggle to obtain them lasted three weeks. Sixteen years later, there are still times when I look at those sneakers and I reminiscent those times.

Which model do you consider as the release of the year and why?

The most ground- breaking sneaker this year is Skytop III by Supra. Futuristic colorways in combination with retro classic elements, like Nike Presto & Jordan Spizike, render Skytop III the only interesting suggestion on behalf of the skateboarding industry, which once used to set the rules of street style, whereas now it only follows them.

Η σχέση μου με τα sneakers ξεκινάει από τα παιδικά μου χρόνια και η κύρια ώθηση ήταν η ενασχόληση με τον αθλητισμό και πιο συγκεκριμένα με το μπάσκετ. Ανήκω σε μία οικογένεια με μακρά ιστορία στο εμπόριο αθλητικών ειδών δίνοντας πάντα έμφαση σε αυτό το άθλημα το οποίο έχει αγαπηθεί όσο λίγα στην χώρα μας. Παρά την οικονομική κρίση, η μανία των sneakers όλο και αυξάνεται με ακραίες καταστάσεις όπου ουρές ανθρώπων περιμένουν συγκεκριμένα releases ακόμη και σε camps μέρες πριν βγουν στην αγορά, πώς το εξηγείς αυτό;

Eίναι κάτι το οποίο συμβαίνει εδώ και πολλά χρόνια κυρίως στο εξωτερικό , τελευταία έχει γίνει πιο έντονο καθώς σε αυτές τις δύσκολες οικονομικά συγκυρίες οι εταιρίες στοχεύουν με τον πλέον έξυπνο τρόπο στις καταναλωτικές ευαισθησίες του κόσμου επαναφέροντας στην αγορά όλο και περισσότερα sneakers από το παρελθόν. Για τα ακραία αυτά γεγονότα θα παραπέμψω σε μία αρχαιοελληνική ρήση η οποία λέει : ‘Παν μέτρον άριστον’. Ποια είναι η πιο ενδιαφέρουσα ιστορία που μπορείς να μας διηγηθείς πίσω από την απόκτηση ενός παπουτσιού;

Δεν μπορώ να θυμηθώ κάτι συγκεκριμένο αλλά θα σας διηγηθώ κάτι το οποίο συνέβη πρόσφατα σε έναν φίλο. Το release των Αir Jordan XI ‘Concord’ συνέπεσε με την πιο σημαντική στιγμή της ζωής του, την γέννηση του πρώτου του παιδιού. Λίγες μέρες μετά πέρασε από το μαγαζί και τον ρώτησα απορημένος γιατί δεν τα φορούσε. Η απάντηση ήταν ότι τα παπούτσια είναι κρεμασμένα στην κούνια του μικρού και δεν θα βγουν από ‘κει μέχρι να μεγαλώσει. Ποιο θεωρείς το release της χρονιάς και γιατί;

When did you start getting involved and why did you choose sneakers as the main items to trade?

My relationship with sneakers starts at my childhood years and the basic urge was my involvement in sports, more specifically in basketball. I belong to a family with a long history in sportswear trade, focusing always more on this sport which is one of the few sports in Greece that are so widely popular.

Despite the crisis, sneakers mania increases at a frenetic pace regarding that hordes of people are looking forward to specific releases ,even at camps, days before they come out in the market, how do you explain that?

It’s something that happens for many years, especially abroad, it has become more perceptible because under those difficult economic circumstances, the companies aim in a sharp way straight to the consuming sensitivities of the buyers by bringing back to market more and more sneakers from the past. For those extreme items I will only refer to an ancient Greek quote: ‘Moderation in all things, and all things in moderation.’

Which is the most interesting story you could tell us about getting a pair of shoes?

I can’t recall anything specific but I was surely pissing off my friends and co-players as every time we met I used to be wearing a different pair of sneakers. The truth is that the sneakers that I have thrown away are more than the ones I have now and this is something I terribly regret now.

Which model do you consider as the release of the year and why?

Nike Air Flight ;89 because they are the shoes of Sir Charles Barkley from Philadelphia 76ers in an OG colorway and design.

Ο Evan Roth είναι ο καλλιτέχνης που επαναστάτησε στην graffiti art σκηνή όταν αντικατέστησε την σπρέι μπογιά με laser light installations. Τώρα διδάσκει στο Parsons στο Παρίσι και είναι ένας καλλιτέχνης που χρησιμοποιεί περισσότερο το χιούμορ του και το Internet για να αψηφήσει τα όρια ανάμεσα σε κανονιστική τέχνη, μαζική κουλτούρα, media και τεχνολογία. Είναι ο άνθρωπος πίσω από το «Hacktivism» και για να μπεις στην ιστοσελίδα του απλά πληκτρολόγησε στο Google: «Bad Ass Mother Fucker».

Evan Roth is the artist who revolutionised graffiti art when he replaced spay paint with laser light installations. Currently teaching at Parson’s in Paris, he is an artist who uses mostly humour and the Internet to defy the boundaries between normative art, popular culture, media and technology. He is the man behind «Hacktivism» and to log on to his website, just google «Bad Ass Mother Fucker». Μόλις ξεκίνησες μια ατομική έκθεση στο Ντιτρόιτ. Πώς αισθάνθηκες να ανεβάζεις έκθεση στη πόλη σου;

You just had a solo exhibition in Detroit. How did it feel showing in your hometown?

Η καλλιτεχνική κοινότητα εδώ είναι πολύ δεμένη και παίρνεις το συναίσθημα ότι όλοι θέλουν να σε δουν να πετυχαίνεις. Μερικά από τα πράγματα που ειπώνονται για τον Καναδά μέσω των social media είναι παρατραβηγμένα και πιστεύω ότι σε πέντε με δέκα χρόνια το Ντιτρόιτ θα γίνει το νέο Βερολίνο. Προς το παρόν, η ζωή εδώ είναι αρκετά σκληρή, υπάρχει οικονομική κρίση και φτώχεια.

The arts community there is very united and you get the feeling that everybody wants you to succeed. There is a sense of positivism. Some of the things being said about Detroit via the social media are overstated and I think that in five or ten years from now Detroit is going to turn into the new Berlin. By now life there is very raw, there is crisis and poverty.

Η graffiti art είναι συνήθως ριζοσπαστική, πολιτική και εφήμερη. Όπως βλέπουμε και στο μικρού μήκους video σου με τίτλο ‘Propulsion Painting: USA’ μια Αμερικάνική σημαία ‘ντύνεται στα μαύρα’ με μία φιάλη μαύρου σπρέι σε ανοιχτό χώρο απέναντι από κτίριο περιτριγυρισμένο από συρματόπλεγμα. Έτσι θα έπρεπε να είναι η σύγχρονη τέχνη;

Όταν κάποιος βλέπει μέσα από τη τέχνη μου, υπάρχει μια πολιτική, ριζοσπαστική χροιά. Ωστόσο, δεν πιστεύω ότι αυτός πρέπει να είναι πάντα ο τρόπος. Ακόμα και με τα πολιτικώς εμπλεκόμενα έργα μου, πιστεύω ότι το χιούμορ είναι καλύτερος τρόπος να ταιριάξεις μαζικές ιδέες και σκληροπυρηνικό ακτιβισμό. Είναι πιο εύκολο να διοχετεύεις τις ιδέες σου στο διαδίκτυο. Το graffiti στο Παρίσι συγκρίνεται με της Νέας Υόρκης; Και πώς αλλάζει η τέχνη του δρόμου με την πάροδο του χρόνου;

Έχει ενδιαφέρον να μελετάς τις ομοιότητες από πόλη σε πόλη. Το graffiti είναι μία ολόκληρη παγκόσμια κοινότητα χωρίς εθνικά όρια. Η τέχνη του δρόμου δεν αλλάζει με τα χρόνια ωστόσο αλλάζει ο τρόπος με τον οποίο κόσμος βλέπει το graffiti. Δουλεύεις ακόμα πάνω στο project Graffiti Research Lab; Ποια είναι η ανταπόκριση που παίρνεις σήμερα;

Το Graffiti Research Lab είναι ένα project στο οποίο έδωσα ζωή και προσκάλεσα πολλά άτομα να συμμετάσχουν. Ύστερα από τα πρώτα χρόνια, αποφασίσαμε με τον συνάδελφο μου να μετατρέψουμε αυτή την οργάνωση σε ένα παγκόσμιο tour. Προς το παρρόν υπάρχει μία πολύ ενεργή ομάδα στο Παρίσι και σε άλλες πόλεις.

Graffiti art is usually radical, political and ephemeral. Like your « USA» short video, part of your Detroit exhibition, where an American flag is self-sprayed pitch black in the open air, opposite a wire-fenced building.

Should all modern art be like that?

When someone looks through my work there is a political, radical thread.

However, I definitely don’t think this is always the way. Even for my politically engaged pieces, I believe that humor is a better way to communicate popular ideas and hardcore activism. It is easier to sneak across political ideas in the Internet.

Is graffiti in Paris comparable to New York’s? And how is street art changing over the years?

I personally like to compare these two together; it is interesting to look at the similarities from city to city. Graffiti is a whole international community without national borders. Street art isn’t changing over the years but the way people see graffiti is changing. People started looking at the art side of it and recognize further any graffiti writers.

Is your Graffiti Research Lab project still running? What is the response you get nowadays?

Graffiti Research Lab is a project to which I gave life and invited many people to take part in. After its first years my partner and I thought that it could be better to turn this organization into a global tour. At the moment there is a really active group in Paris and other cities.

Your TSA Communication project uses a wicked sense of humor to critique the austere X-ray security measures in airports. Have you ever got yourself in trouble for carrying around these metal plates?

Στο project σου TSA Communication με μια πολύ διαολεμένη αίσθηση του χιούμορ κριτικάρεις τα αυστηρά X-ray μέτρα ασφαλείας στα αεροδρόμια. Έχεις μπλέξει ποτέ με όλα αυτά τα μεταλλικά αντικείμενα;

It is funny because they question me a lot about it. Since 2009 I have never got in trouble. The employers at the airports just laugh with it and I love their reaction.

Είναι αστείο γιατί μου το ρωτάνε συνέχεια αυτό. Έχω να βρω τον μπελά μου από το 2009. Οι υπάλληλοι του αεροδρομίου απλά γελάνε με αυτό και λατρεύω την αντίδραση τους.

How do you define «Hacktivism»? On the video on your website you talk about talking activism off the streets. How can this work in the internet world?

Πώς θα μας ερμήνευες τον ‘Hacktivism’; Στο βίντεο της σελίδας σου μιλάς για το πώς θα πάρουμε τον ακτιβισμό από τους δρόμους. Πώς μπορεί να λειτουργήσει αυτό σε έναν ιντερνετικό κόσμο;

Internet is every artist’s biggest tool. For me it is important as my work is kind of political. I want to view what my audience’s opinion is. There are two groups of people: those who come to see your work in a gallery and those who won’t but maybe find you on the Internet. Definitely, I am not doing that job just for myself.

Το Internet είναι το μεγαλύτερο εργαλείο κάθε καλλιτέχνη. Για εμένα είναι σημαντικό καθώς η δουλειά μου είναι και κατά μια έννοια πολιτική. Θέλω να δείξω την άποψη του κοινού μου. Υπάρχουν δυο ομάδες ανθρώπων: αυτοί που έρχονται να δουν τη δουλειά σου σε μια γκαλερί και αυτοί που δεν θα έρθουν αλλά ίσως σε βρουν στο Internet. Σίγουρα πάντως δεν κάνω αυτή τη δουλειά για τον εαυτό μου.

4FASHIONSHAKE V ENSEMBLE

Μπορεί η εικόνα της Αθήνας να φέρει μνήμες πρόσφατης καταστροφής αλλά δημιουργικές συναντήσεις όπως το 4FASHIONSHAKE, μοιάζουν να αποτελούν το τέλειο αντίδοτο. 900 καλεσμένοι βρέθηκαν την Τρίτη 3 Απριλίου στο Παλλάς, προκειμένου να παρακολουθήσουν το πέμπτο κατά σειρά 4Fashionshake, ένα φρέσκο fashion performance που φλέρταρε με την έννοια του «μαζί».

The picture of Athens might conjure up recent destruction memories but creative meetings like 4Fashionshake seem like the perfect antidote.

900 guests attended on Tuesday, April 3rd in Pallas Theatre the fifth in a row 4FASHIONSHAKE, a fresh fashion performance, which was flirting with the notion of «togetherness». Το 4FASHIONSHAKE μεταφέρει το OZON σε τρεις διαστάσεις, όλα όσα είναι το περιοδικό παρουσιάζονται πάνω σε μια θεατρική σκηνή. Όπως και το ΟΖΟΝ, αποτελεί μια ανοιχτή πλατφόρμα που προσφέρεται για το δημιουργικό μπλέξιμο νέων δημιουργών και καταξιωμένων καλλιτεχνών. Σε αυτό το ανοιξιάτικο 4FASHIONSHAKE εμπνευστήκαμε από την έννοια του «Ensemble». Ενώ γύρω μας όλα δείχνουν να καταρρέουν η ομάδα του ΟΖΟΝ πίστεψε στη μόνη βεβαιότητα, αυτή της ομαδικής προσπάθειας, και συνειδητοποιώντας πόσο σημαντική είναι η έννοια του συνόλου, θέλησαμε να μεταφέρουμε οπτικοακουστικά μέσα σε μια βραδιά ότι «μαζί» μπορούμε να τα καταφέρουμε καλύτερα. Με δυναμική έναρξη από την Ελευθερία Αράπογλου και το label της Digitaria οι χορευτές της ομάδας YELP φορώντας τη , που παρουσίασε τη συλλογή Α/W 2012 με τίτλο ‘Λήθη-Μνημοσύνη’ καθήλωσαν το κοινό με τις dark novelty κινήσεις τους. Η σκυτάλη δόθηκε στον ανερχόμενο σχεδιαστή Six Lee ο οποίος παρουσίασε τη συλλογή του A/W 12 ‘We’re all at the end’ και τα αγόρια του με τα clean cut κοστούμια τους και τα γαλάζια μαλλιά έδωσαν στη βραδιά κάτι από τη λάμψη των μεγάλων catwalks. Συνεχίζοντας, ο ιδιαίτερα αγαπημένος στο ελληνικό κοινό Γιώργος Ελευθεριάδης, σε συνεργασία με την Κατερίνα Κανά και τον Γιάννη Λούκο, παρουσίασε τη νέα του συλλογή ‘In Search of Poetry’ μέσα από τη δράση ‘528 hz’, κατά τη διάρκεια της οποίας περφόρμερς παρουσιάστηκαν ως ένα σώμα που μέσα από μια σπειροειδή κίνηση ξεδιπλώθηκε και απέκτησε ζωή πάνω στη σκηνή του Παλλάς. Το Σκανδιναβικό σχεδιαστικό δίδυμο, οι Ubi Sunt, συμμετείχε με το fashion film που δημιούργησε στα πλαίσια του «Movie Meets Fashion by Mercedes Benz», ενώ η φωτογράφος Μάρα Δεσύπρη παρουσίασε ένα πολύ προσωπικό της βίντεο υπό τους ήχους της μπαλάντας των «Lady and Bird». Επιπλέον, το fashion blog Ladies&Gents συμμετείχε με ένα film αφιερωμένο στο χορό, ενώ παρουσιάστηκε το βραβευμένο στο φεστιβάλ του Slamdance, το πειραματικό φίλμ ‘Solipsist’ του Andrew Thomas Huang. Το πέμπτο 4Fashionshake έριξε την αυλαία του μελωδικά με τον Κ.Βήτα ο οποίος σε μια τρυφερή εκτέλεση παρουσίασε δύο νέα κομμάτια από τον καινούργιο δίσκο του ‘Χρυσαλλίδα’. Όσο γινόμαστε ομάδες τα πράγματα μοιάζουν να αποκτούν περισσότερο νόημα. Φεύγοντας από το Παλλάς εκείνο το βράδυ αποφασίσαμε πως θα κρατήσουμε στο μυαλό μας την έννοια του «μαζί» καθώς προετοιμαζόμαστε για το επόμενο 4FASHIONSHAKE.

4FASHIONSHAKE aims at conveying the idea of OZON into three dimensions, all that defines the magazine is presented on a theatrical stage. Just like OZON itself, 4FASHIONSHAKE represents an open platform provided to entangle on a creative level new artists and accomplished professionals of the field.

In this springtime 4Fashionshake the notion of ensemble was our source of inspiration. While everything around us seems to be falling apart, OZON team trusted in the only certainty it has; the one of team work and after realising how important the idea of a team is, they wanted with audiovisual means to convey in one night the message that ‘together’ we can do it better.

The show began in full sail with Eleftheria Arapoglou and her ‘Digitaria’ label presenting her collection for A/W 2012 entitled ‘MIND OVER MATTER’. The dancers of YELP team wearing pieces of the collection fascinated the crowd with their dark novelty movements on the majestic stage of Pallas. Then, it was Six Lee’s, an up-and coming designer, turn to present for the first time live on stage his A/W 12 collection ‘We’re all at the end’, and his boys with their clean cut suits and their light blue hair added up to the night a touch of the glow of the big catwalks. Furthermore, a highly popular in the Greek audience designer, Yiorgos Eleftheriades, presented his new collection ‘In search of Poetry’ through the ‘528hz’ act in collaboration with Katerina Kana and Giannis Loukos. Through this experimentation with the profound frequency of the human body, which is considered as the frequency of life and love, models and performers showed up as one body, where through a spiral movement, it unfolded and gained life in front of the audience.

The Scandinavian designing duo, Ubi Sunt, participated with a fashion film, which was part of the ‘Movie Meets Fashion by Mercedes Benz’ project, while photographer Mara Desypris presented a very personal video of hers under the sounds of the ballad ‘Lady and Bird.’ In addition, ‘Ladies & Gents’ fashion blog participated with a film dedicated to dance and bursting with ensemble movements, not to mention about the presentation of, awarded in Slamdance Film Festival, experimental short film ‘Solipsist’ by Andrew Thomas Huang. In the end, the fifth 4Fashionshake dropped the curtain under the melodic sounds of K.BHTA, who with a gentle performance presented two new tracks from his new album ‘Chrysalida’.

As far as we are teaming up, things make more sense. From this night and on, when we were leaving Pallas theatre behind, we decided that we will keep in our minds that notion of togetherness, while we are preparing for the next 4FASHIONSHAKE show.

Το πέμπτο κατά σειρά 4FASHIONSHAKE, εκτός από μία μεγάλη παράσταση γεμάτη με χορό, fashion performances και μουσική, έκρυβε μερικές ακόμη εκπλήξεις, με την υποστήριξη των συνεργατών του περιοδικού που προσέφεραν άλλοτε γευστικά και άλλοτε δροσερά διαλείμματα. Τα Nestle Fitness Bars μας υποδέχτηκαν μ’ ένα θερμό καλωσόρισμα και ενώ παρέες, παρέες άρχισαν να μαζεύονται στην είσοδό του Παλλάς, όλοι μαζί κατευθυνθήκαμε προς το φουαγιέ του θεάτρου. Εκεί, πήραμε μέρος σ’ ένα Lipton Tea Party δοκιμάζοντας τις 3 νέες γεύσεις της Lipton Exclusive Collection, Green Gunpowder, London Earl Grey και Gold Tea, συζητώντας παράλληλα για το τι επρόκειτο να δούμε και ρίχνοντας κλεφτές ματιές σε κάποια από τα πιο φρέσκα και νεανικά πρόσωπα της πόλης μας. Μετά το τρίτο χαρακτηριστικό καμπανάκι πήραμε θέση για την έναρξη της παράστασης, τα φώτα χαμήλωσαν και η μεγάλη βραδιά τελικά ξεκίνησε. Βγαίνοντας από την αίθουσα και κρατώντας τα goodie bags της Nestle Fitness και της Lipton, επιστρέψαμε και πάλι στο φουαγιέ του θεάτρου, για ένα μεγάλο πάρτι. Με μουσικές επιλεγμένες από τον Κωνσταντίνο Καλφακάκο, μοναδικά Absolut cocktails από τους εξειδικευμένους bartenders της Absolut και ξέφρενο χορό, η βραδιά του 4FASHIONSHAKE V έκλεισε με τον καλύτερο δυνατό τρόπο.

Beside a great show the fifth 4FASHIONSHAKE was full of dance, fashion performance, music and also hold a few surprises, under the support of OZON’s collaborators, who added to the night some tasty and refreshing breaks. Nestle Fitness Bars, warm-welcomed us and after the crowd was gathered together at the entrance of Pallas Theatre, we all moved to the Theatre’s foyer. There, we took part in a Lipton Tea Party trying the three brand new flavors of Lipton Exclusive Collection, Green Gunpowder, London Earl Grey and Gold Tea, while discussing on what we were about to experience as well as throwing glances at some of the most young and fresh faces of our city. After the third characteristic ring for the beginning of the theatrical performance, we took a sit, the lights went down, and the great night began. Coming outside of the auditorium carrying the goodie bags given to everyone by Nestle Fitness and Lipton, we returned to the foyer in order to enter a big party. With the music selection from Konstantinos Kalfakakos and tasteful Absolut coctails made by specialized bartenders of Absolut and our crazy dances, the curtains of 4FASHIONSHAKE came down.

Συνήθως φοράω ακουστικά και ακούω μουσική. Όταν περπατάω προσπαθώντας να χαλαρώσω τη σκέψη μου. Το βρίσκω θεραπευτικό και σαν τρόπο να ονειρεύομαι τη μέρα. Σου αρέσει να περπατάς στην Αθήνα και που προτιμάς;

Απολαμβάνω να περπατάω στην Αθήνα, γιατί οι δρόμοι δεν είναι τόσο βαρετοί και επίπεδοι, όπως στην πατρίδα μου και υπάρχουν πολλά πράγματα να δεις.

What are you thinking of while you are walking?

Mostly I walk wearing headphones and listening to the music, trying to relax my mind. Find this way therapeutic and a way to daydream.

Do you like walking in Athens and where do you prefer to?

Really enjoy walking in Athens, because streets are not just straight, boring and flat, like these in my hometown and there are many things to see.

Πραγματικά μου αρέσει. Περπατώντας στο κέντρο τριγύρω από τα σοκάκια της Αθήνας είναι σαν να κάνεις εξερεύνηση και ανακαλύπτεις καινούργια πράγματα και μέρη.

What are you thinking of while you are walking?

I am thinking of different things about my work and my daily program because I want to be as good as possible and have an organization in my life.

Do you like walking in Athens and where do you prefer to?

I really like that. Walking downtown around the streets of Athens is like doing an exploration and discovering new things and places.
