UNDERSTANDING THE MESSAGE OF THE PROPHETS “AMOS – INTRODUCTION” “then answered amos, and said to amaziah, i was no prophet, neither was i a prophet’s son; but i was an herdman, and a gatherer of sycamore fruit: and the lord took me as i followed the flock, and the lord said unto me, Go, prophesy unto my people israel” (amos 7:14-15). and, “the words of amos, who was among the herdmen of tekoa, which he saw concerning israel in the days of uzziah king of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash king of israel, two years before the earthquake” (amos 1:1). amos means “burden-bearer. he was a native of tekoa, a town in Judah, about six miles from Bethlehem. amos was not a prophet nor was his father. yet God called him to deliver a message, at least in part, to israel, “hear this word that the lord hath spoken against you, o children of israel, against the whole family which i brought up from the land of egypt, saying,” (amos 3:1). Since the kings under whom amos prophesied are named, uzziah of Judah and Jeroboam of israel (amos 1:1, above), we know that he was contemporary with isaiah and hosea, “the vision of isaiah the son of amoz, which he saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem in the days of uzziah, Jothan, ahaz, and hezekiah, kings of Judah” (isaiah 1:1), and, “the word of the lord that came unto hosea, the son of Beeri, in the days of uzziah, Jotham, ahaz, and hezekiah, kings of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash, king of israel” (hosea 1:1). this also allows us to assign a more accurate date to his prophetic ministry, about 755 BC. Because the prophetic calling of these three men appear in the days of the same kings, their message to the people is going to be very similar. religiously israel, the northern Kingdom, was in complete apostasy. Jeroboam had given them the idolatrous calves to worship, “Whereupon the king took counsel, and made two calves of gold, and said unto them, it is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem: behold thy gods, o israel, which brought thee up out of the land of egypt” (1st Kings 12:28). and, ahab had introduced them to Baal, “and ahab the Son of omri did evil in the sight of the lord above all that were before him. … and went and served Baal, and worshipped him. … and ahab did more to provoke the lord God of israel to anger than all the kings of israel that were before him” (1st Kings 16:30-33). Socially, the people lived in luxury but at the expense of the poor, “and i will smite the winter house and the summer house; and the houses of ivory shall perish, … hear this word, ye kine of Bashan, which oppress the poor, which crush the needy, … (amos 3:15 and 4:1). Political corruption ruled the land, “For i know your manifold transgressions and your mighty sins: they afflict the just, they take a bribe, and they turn aside the poor in the gate from their right” (amos 5:12). if ever a people were in need of a prophet who had not been trained and paid by the political correct, it was now. Cannot america, and her political leaders, learn a valuable lesson from all of this?
