Edna Daugherty

My loving mother, Edna, was born several years ago, on March 1st in the little town of Barnard, Missouri, the daughter of VerneII and Lulu Holmes. She had one step brother, Paul, a sister, Belvadene, and another brother, Hershel. They lived in several NW Missouri towns during the depression years. She graduated from high school at Filmore, Mo. She then attended N.W. Missouri State Teachers College (now a state university) in Maryville, Mo., earning a teachers certificate. She started her teaching career in rural one room schools around Elmo, Missouri, where she met and married Glenn Daugherty on February 14, 1942. While Dad was serving overseas in the Army during WW2, she taught in the “Tile Factory,” a one room school near McClean, Illinois. After the war, Edna and Glenn purchased a farm S.W. of Clarinda, Iowa where they lived for 29 years. Dad was a farmer, and Mom returned to teaching school. They had two sons, Allan and Charles. Mom returned to college at NW Missouri State University during the summers and received her Bachelors of Education degree. She taught in Clearmont, Mo., Braddyville, Ia., and ended her teaching career in Clarinda, Ia. In Clarinda, she was a member of the Eastern Star. In 1983, Edna and Glenn moved to Mountain Home. She was a member of the Christian Science Church both in Clarinda, and Mtn. Home, and attended the Methodist Church in Mtn. Home with Glenn. She loved sewing, gardening, entertaining, cooking, (Dad always said she made the best “darn” potato salad) working on the computer, dancing, and being with her family. She has four grand children and five great grand children.

The Zizzer running Club will once again be hosting a series of youth track meets this spring. The meets will be for individuals in preschool through eighth grade. The meets will follow similar format as the ones held last year. There will be a $1 entry fee per event with students being allowed to enter up to four events. Events will include individual running events, relay races, long jump, high jump, hurdles, shot and discus. Individuals need to enter the day of the event. Registration will begin at 8:30 with field events starting immediately and running events starting at 9:00. The final meet on May 3rd will be the Championship Ribbon Meet with awards being given. All participants will earn an award. Concessions will be available. Meets are conducted by Zizzer Track and Cross Country Coaches.

Aid’s Downtown Antique Mall: A History

There were many outstanding retail establishments in West Plains, but none lasted longer or drew as much attention as “Aid’s.” Its founder, Charles Theodore Aid, was a tinsmith trained in Pennsylvania who came west seeking his fortune. In St. Louis he heard of boomtowns developing along the new railroads in the Ozarks. First he tried Rogers, Arkansas, but a traveling salesman for Norval-Shapleigh Hardware, William Cook, convinced him that West Plains was the place to be. He arrived there right after the railroad and with Cook’s help opened a hardware store. From a tinsmith shop to a hardware store to a department store his business grew through the years as he took advantage of new products and opportunities. His promotional skills and ability to draw huge crowds was extraordinary. In the 1920s Hardware Age Magazine declared Aid Hardware “The Best Small Town Store in Missouri.” The store closed in 1990 after 105 years of business. From the beginning it has been a family business with our children Jake and Sara helping out as well as other family members. Jake is our ring man/auctioneer and Mindy is a cashier/clerk. Sara and her husband Anthony are also involved, Sara as a cashier/clerk and Anthony in set up for the auction. Sandy and I have 2 wonderful], grandchildren, Mya and Jarrett, who we are very proud of. Sandy and I attend the Alton Assembly of God church in which we are very active. Sandy is church secretary and I am the Sunday school superintendent. Our kids are also very active in their churches and we all believe that God comes first and everything else comes after God. We are a blessed family and feel blessed with every auction that we get the opportunity to do no matter how large or small; we will work hard for all of our customers. We are licensed in both missouri and arkansas and we specialize in real estate, farm and estate auctions.
