UNDERSTANDING THE MESSAGE OF THE PROPHETS “AMOS – THE KINE (COWS) OF BASHAN” “hear this word, ye kine of Bashan, that are in the mountains of Samaria, which oppress the poor, which crush the needy, which say to their masters, Bring, and let us drink” (amos 4:1). the spiritual decay in the days of amos had reached such a pitch that even the women had lost sight of their spiritual obligations to God and their families. in rebuking manner, God through the prophet, refers to them as the kine (cows – v3) of Bashan (the rich pastureland east of the Jordan). the woman’s role in society and life is first and foremost the care of the home. God told the woman, while yet in the garden, “unto the woman he said, i will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee” (Genesis 3:16). of the Proverbial Woman, Solomon penned, “She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness” (Proverbs 31:27). Paul exhorted the aged women to teach the young women, “… to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, to be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed” (titus 2:4-5). and, of the younger widows Paul wrote, “i will therefore that the younger women marry, bear children, guide the house, give none occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully. For some are already turned aside after Satan” (1st timothy 5:14). to neglect this duty is to deny God and his order of things. to be sober (titus 2:4 above) means, “4994, sophronizo, so-fron-id-zo: from 4998; to be of sound mind, i.e. (fig.) to discipline or correct: - teach to be sober” (StronG, pg. 95). Strong defines the root word from which, “to be sober” derives, “4998, sophron, so-frone; from the base of 4982 and that of 5424; safe (sound) in mind, i.e. self-controlled (moderate as to opinion or passion): - discreet, sober; temperate” (StronG, pg. 95). the woman who is sober minded will guard her dress as well as her behavior, “in like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety, not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array; But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works” (1st timothy 2:9-10). this is what the Bible means when it states that the woman is to be sober. She is to tend to the serious things in life and not worldly lusts or pleasure. the same is applicable to young men, “young men likewise exhort to be sober minded” (titus 2:6). if young women and men loved their spouses as they are commanded (titus 2:4), divorce would decrease dramatically. Broken homes would disappear. if young ladies loved their children as they are commanded, they would no longer murder them in the guise of abortion and for the God of pleasure. if mothers tended to the cares and needs of the home and less to their own self-indulgences, there would be less need for social programs to feed and clothe neglected children. Perhaps we are not so far removed from the times of amos as we might think?

Caulfield, Missouri “MY GOD IS EVERYWHERE”

Some time ago in another state, I asked a member of the church when he was going to attend services. Instantly he responded, “I don’t have to go to a building, my God is everywhere.” To which I immediately responded, “Yes, God is everywhere, but He has set aside a special day for His children to worship Him.” With a smile on his face, he said, “Thank you anyway,” and walked away. Here is a classic example of one who has completely rejected the Lord’s instructions to assemble with the saints on the Lord’s day (Heb.10:25). Like countless others, he has fashioned God to his own standards which in essence is a form of idolatry! In every community, there are professed Christians who seldom if ever assemble with the saints. Many are hard working good citizens and will without hesitation help those in need. All of which is commendable, however, all of their “good deeds” and even acknowledgment of God does not cancel out obeying the commandments of God! In an effort to justify willfully forsaking the assembling of the saints many will arrogantly say, “My God understands!” The truth is, they do not understand God!! The major reason they do not properly understand God is because they do not diligently search the Scriptures (Jn.5:39; 2 Tim.2: 15)! Friends, we are NOT having reference to those who are physically unable to assemble with the saints. With that clearly in mind, whenever statements are made, as mentioned in this article, people need to carefully consider the following: • They are turning their nose up at God and His inspired Word (Gal.6:7-8). In so doing they are rejecting God. “He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day” (Jn.12:48). • They are blinded by their own selfish desires. Like the rich farmer they forget God (Lk.12: 15-21) and instead of “thy will be done” their attitude is “my will be done!” • Their continuous refusal to assemble with the saints clearly demonstrates to Christ they do not love Him! Jesus said, “If ye love me keep my commandments” (Jn.14:15). Nor do they love God with all their heart, soul and mind (Mat.22:37). For if they did they would be seeking “first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness” (Mat.6:33). Each Lord’s day, faithful saints assemble to worship God “in spirit and in truth” (Jn.4:24 ). In so doing, they sing praises unto Him (Eph.5:19), observe the Lord’s Supper (I Cor.16: 1-2; Ac.20:28), prayers are offered (Ac.2:42) and a lesson from God’s word is given (Ac.20:7) and they give as they have been prospered (I Cor.16: 1-2). All of which strengthens them, encourages fellow saints and is further preparing them for eternity. Yes, God is everywhere (Psa.139), and He is going to be with the saints on the Lord’s day as they assemble to worship Him.
