Did you make any New Year’s Resolutions? All resolutions involve change, whether it is exercise, dieting, saving money, watch less television, getting better organized or studying the Bible daily. Life itself is a journey of continuous change. While some changes require little effort, others test one’s resolve. It is through a life-time of practice, habits or patterns are formed which in turn becomes a way of life. As for Christians, that change took place in obeying the gospel. The Bible calls this change repentance. “Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord” (Acts 3: 19). After one comes forth from the watery grave of baptism where his sins were washed away in the blood of Christ (Rom.6:3-4; Acts 2:38; 22:16), he is to “desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby” (I Pet. 2:2). Numerous examples are given in Scripture of those who had obeyed the gospel, but reverted to a former or sinful way of life. Among those would be Ananias and Sapphira who lied to God about their giving (Acts 5:1-11). “Hymenaeus and Alexander who “concerning faith have made shipwreck” (I Tim.1: 19-20). Then there was Hymenaeus and Philetus who said “that the resurrection is past already; and overthrown the faith of some” (2 Tim.2: 17-18). STOCKING Paul by Stocking inspiration of the Holy Spirit wrote to the Colossians and reminded them that “the wrath of Now God” (Col.3:6) is upon those who participate in “fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil conPorter Paints Large Selection cupiscence, ofand covetousness, which is idolatry” (Col.3:5).
