I hope you and your family have come through this difficult year safe and in good health. When I sat down to write the introduction to the previous edition of Oyster Life, it was with high hopes for 2020. Despite everything that has happened, happily many of those hopes have been realised. My thanks go out to everyone at Oyster and in the Oyster family – everyone has pulled together and we have adapted and changed to meet each new challenge.

There is a real sense of carpe diem in the air and we have all become more agile, finding new ways to do the things we have always taken for granted. We have sorely missed the chance to catch up with our friends at major boat shows around the world. In response, we held our first Private Views in Southampton and Palma. Both were a great success and we have already confirmed more dates for 2021.

Thankfully, there was some respite with a summer of sailing – at times, being aboard Lush felt like the safest place to be! It seems lots of owners have lived on their yachts through the pandemic – testament to the well-provisioned and well-equipped liveaboard design that is at the heart of Oyster’s blue water DNA. We had some memorable times sailing around the UK and cruising in the Mediterranean with family and friends – we are already making plans for new adventures next year. The new sailing season Down Under is in full swing and our Oyster friends there are looking forward to the America’s Cup in early 2021. I hope you took the chance to get out on the water and enjoy your Oyster too.

Our new models have inspired great demand and sales of new yachts are up.

We are proud to have confirmed orders for our 14th 885 (with four in-build) and our 14th 565, not to mention five 595s. As a result, we are scaling up our workforce sustainably to manage demand. I am delighted to confirm we are investing in more apprentices to continue our proud boat-building traditions, ensuring they are trained in time-honoured craft skills by our finest master craftspeople.

The pandemic has driven change throughout the business and we have been fortunate to come through in great shape. The weather ahead may continue to be unpredictable, but Oyster is very much on the right heading.

Today our company vision feels more relevant than ever: we will build the world’s finest bluewater cruising yachts and business to make life-changing adventures possible for our passionate global family of owners.

We restarted production in late April and with build bays and order books full, we are going from strength to strength. It will be welcome news for owners that Oyster residuals are holding firm and we have sold a record number of brokerage boats – driven, in part I imagine, by the call of the sea that we all felt so strongly during lockdown.

Today, our company vision feels more relevant than ever: we will build the world’s finest bluewater cruising yachts and business to make life-changing adventures possible for our passionate global family of owners.

I continue to be immensely proud of our fleet. As the new owner of Oyster, I made a commitment to invest in new models.

This year we have developed the exciting new Oyster 885GT in collaboration with one of our owners. And the much anticipated Oyster 495 will set a new benchmark for the 50 foot market – find out more about both these remarkable yachts in this issue.

The first 595s also launch in 2021 – six owners were so convinced by its potential and capabilities, they ordered off-plan.

A fleet of over 30 Oysters sets off on the Oyster World Rally in January 2022. With entrants from around the globe, as well as a number of children along for the ride, preparations and training continue apace.

For all you aspiring circumnavigators out there, sadly it is too late to join them this time. But if you want to take up the challenge why not consider the 2024-25 rally? Be quick – places for this unique, once-in-a-lifetime trip are in huge demand.

We have big plans for the New Year and, as this year has shown, we will continue to adapt to overcome the challenges in true Oyster spirit. We look forward to hearing about your plans and your adventures when you return from the far corners of the world.

NEWS ROUNDUP OYST E R 5 6 5 GOES FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH We are excited to share with you that the 14th 565 hull has been ordered.

The 565 was launched in April 2019, featuring the new Humphreys designed G6 hull. She was received with much interest from her inception and we were thrilled when she won British Yachting Awards’ Bluewater Cruiser of the Year 2019. We are certain that the buzz around her will continue as more Oyster 565 owners join the fleet in the coming months.

A PHENOMENAL YEAR FOR OYST E R B RO K E R AG E The call of the sea seems to have grown stronger this year.

Despite the tight restrictions of lockdowns around the globe, we have seen increased demand for Oyster brokerage yachts.

This huge interest in pre-owned Oysters has resulted in phenomenal sales so far. The restrictions have seen us change to agile new working methods, bringing teams together to collaborate across all our brokerage offices to manage and complete complex crossborder sales. Inspired by an owner who approached us with the idea of building a more performance-orientated yacht and specified with cutting-edge light-weight hardware, she is designed for fast, comfortable passage-making. Two Private Views for the autumn – one in Southampton and the other in Palma – were the perfect opportunity. These invitation-only events were very well-attended, with guests’ health and well-being our top priority. Exceptional examples of the Oyster 565, 675, 745 and 885 were on show in Palma, demonstrating the broad range of customisation available. In Southampton we showed the Oyster 565 and 745. No Oyster event would be complete without our owners and these were no exception. Dates for a Spring Private View in Palma have already been announced and we plan to hold an event in the UK too. We look forward to seeing you there.

OYST E R WO R L D R A L LY 2 0 2 4 - 2 5 With the success of the first two Oyster World Rallies and demand outstripping places for the 2022-23 rally, we are delighted to confirm the fourth Oyster World Rally will set sail in 2024.

Applications for places on the Oyster World Rally 2024-25 are now open – the fleet is capped at just 30 yachts and we are expecting demand for places to be fierce.

A SUMMER LAUNCH

The first Oyster 595s will touch the water in the summer of 2021. The long awaited big sister to the award-winning Oyster 565 fills an important gap in the Oyster line up, superseding the incredibly popular 575 and 625 models. Wellproportioned and extremely versatile, she offers high quality customised build options with no compromise.

Capable of great things, she has a large internal volume so can easily accommodate family and friends for lazy cruising days in the sun, or be the ideal live-aboard yacht to

take you around the globe with ease. This remarkable all-rounder is the largest Oyster model that can be effortlessly sailed by two people. The Lloyd’s Register-certified G6 hull form with twin rudders makes her easy to handle and extremely manoeuvrable.

An entirely new model, the 595’s design was informed by owners, with Oyster DNA running through her from stem to stern.

She has been entirely reimagined from the deck and technology to the luxurious interiors. With six 595s sold off-plan we are expecting a warm welcome from the market.

The 595 is the pinnacle of the high-end ‘friends and family’ cruiser. Whether you’re island-hopping or tackling an ocean passage, she’s a high-end adventure machine that’s a joy to sail.

NEW TECHNOLO GY FOR TIMELESS YA C H T S Oyster Composite Technologies Centre in Ashmanhaugh, Norfolk, recently took delivery of a bespoke vacuum infusion table and advanced laser precision technology. At 10m x 7m, the vacuum infusion table enables us to build the bulkheads for the entire fleet.

The project took three months to come to fruition, working closely with Poole-based company NORCO who are known as experts in composites and Glass Reinforced Plastics (GRP) manufacturing techniques. The vacuum infusion table creates production efficiencies and guarantees the highest quality of workmanship, endorsed by our Lloyd’s Register certification.

The introduction of the precision FARO Tracer M laser projector allows our team to meet the high levels of accuracy our yachts

demand. Developed for the aerospace and motorsport industries, it cuts out the possibilities for human error when marking out a complex shape with a tape measure.

The system projects a laser outline onto a 3D surface or object, creating a virtual template. As a result, it ensures the structure is perfect for very tight tolerances

involved in fitting systems and furniture.

We will use the FARO Tracer on the build of 885/11, setting up laser projectors in the build bay that will speed up the process without the need for physical templates.

This new technology is yet another investment that is enhancing the already high build quality of our yachts.

I N E XC E L L E N T S H A P E FOR THE FUTURE The pandemic delivered a very different year to the one we planned or expected. Oyster rose to the challenge and met everything thrown at us with good humour and true dedication, demonstrating the heart and soul that makes Oyster Yachts so special.

Despite the odds, we saw an excellent year of new yacht and brokerage sales, thanks to a sense of carpe diem and a desire to escape on our go-anywhere-adventure-machines.

The pandemic illustrated how agile and resilient our team and our business are to weather the many challenges.

These impressive yachts have proved themselves to be extremely popular, with the Series II offering all the benefits of much larger yachts while coming in under the 24m load line rule.

This gives you the best of both worlds – not only do you get an awful lot of yacht to enjoy for your money, you also avoid the red tape associated with larger yachts – a real advantage if you are thinking of chartering her during downtime.

The annual Oyster get-together in Palma is considered one of the highlights of the sailing calendar and is the perfect ending to the summer season in the Mediterranean. Around 30 Oyster Yachts gather at Real Club Nautico in the heart of Palma de Mallorca, for five fun-filled days of racing and legendary social events.

The racing is split between traditional windward leeward courses and coastal racing along the stunning south Majorcan coastline to give the fleet a variety of sailing conditions. After racing each day, crews are treated to an array of evening events, from dock parties and cocktail competitions, to sit down gala dinners with sensational Spanish food. The Palma Regatta caters for all and we really enjoy seeing new and familiar faces year on year.

Our Oyster Palma team will be on hand to help you prepare for the event, from rigging work to servicing, and the renowned Oyster tech team will also be available throughout the regatta to offer their expert advice and help to fix any problems quickly if required.

Thanks to the Oyster World Rally, Oyster owners have an exclusive opportunity to sail around the world on a non-competitive rally, with the added assistance of a professional support team and the camaraderie of fellow yachtsmen and women.

After the success of the 2013-14 and 2017-19 events, the 202223 Oyster World Rally is set to deliver yet another breath-taking experience for 30 Oyster owners. The fleet will sail across three oceans, covering 27,000 miles over 16 months, and will visit some of the world’s most spectacular cruising grounds. The route is timed precisely to make the most of global weather patterns so participants can experience the best of each location, with plenty of cruising time at the end of each passage.

T H E 2 0 2 2 - 2 3 R A L LY L I N E - U P As news of the Oyster World Rally has spread over the years, we have seen huge interest from Oyster owners and soon-to-be owners alike. So it’s no surprise that the 30 places available for the 2022-23 Rally were rapidly filled, with a waiting list for those who missed out. The fleet is made up of a wide range of Oyster models, ranging from 56ft to 70ft+. There are six brand new Oyster 565s taking part, so we are excited to see how they perform over the distance.

T H E B E S T P R E PA R AT I O N A N D T R A I N I N G The skippers and their crews are currently undergoing specialist training and learning to ensure they have the skills needed to stay safe and enjoy the experience to the full. Oyster’s longstanding relationships with the industry’s leading suppliers and organisations mean our yachts have access to the top equipment and training on the market, and our partners will go that extra mile to ensure they are ready for anything.

A T R U LY I N T E R N A T I O N A L F L E E T Oysters from all over the world are taking part. The fleet is made up of largely British and US/Canadian boats and there are also representatives from Ireland, South Africa, Netherlands and Germany. The global fleet of participants get to know one another well before the start of the Rally with a series of webinars organised by the World Rally team.

Logistics Team From the moment owners sign up for the rally, our highly experienced Logistics team are with them every step of the way.

This support begins well before the departure from Antigua and the team are available to answer any questions, offer advice and help skippers and crews get any training they may need. Once the fleet sets off they fly ahead to each destination to make sure everything runs smoothly, from liaising with local agents, finding berthing in marinas, organising canal transits in Panama and managing clearance and immigration documentation and payments. They will also organise some memorable parties in stunning locations, where everyone can catch up with the other yachts and share their wonderful stories.

Technical Team Our Technical Team know our yachts inside out and bring unrivalled expertise in their knowledge of engineering, electrical and mechanical systems. Having all skippered and sailed Oysters for many years, the team hold invaluable professional experience that they can pass on to participants. The tech team will greet the fleet at all major destinations to make sure everything is shipshape for the next leg.

P R E PA R I N G F O R C I R C U M N AV I G AT I O N Like any major expedition, planning is key to success and the devil is in the detail. We spoke to two owners about what they are doing over the next year to prepare their yachts and themselves for the adventure of a lifetime.

PETER LOEHR AND TINA SHI OYSTER 575 PEOPLE SEA US-born sailor Peter Loehr has always wanted to sail around the world. “I went about things backwards really,” he admits. “When I discovered that Oyster organised a world circumnavigation, that event was a great selling point in my decision to buy an Oyster.”

Peter made contact with the Oyster sales team in the USA. “I was looking at a 575 and several other boats – the OWR was a deal-closer – it tipped the scales,” he says.

Peter explains, “Before I bought People Sea, an Oyster 575, I’d never even been on an Oyster before. Dan at Oyster Newport, USA, was fantastic and helped get me to the finish line. The Oyster team in Wroxham, UK were fantastic too in helping me create and commission the boat I wanted.

“With my background in film, I treated the whole boat manufacturing process like it was a movie in production, paying incredible attention to every tiny detail. I think I probably drove the guys mad, but they never let it show.” He laughs, “well maybe sometimes!”

He is full of praise for the team at Oyster. ‘I’ve very happily keyed into the Oyster family. The magic of Oyster After Sales and Technical Support team. Everyone knows that Oyster is renowned for its fantastic service and support.”

Peter will be sailing with his wife Tina Shi. They are not planning to have professional crew with them on the OWR, but will be sailing on some of the legs with their daughter Casey (22) and son Odin (19), with other sailing friends joining them en-route.

It’s the camaraderie, being with like-minded friends that we’ve already met through buying the boat. The rally provides the opportunity for group learning, being able to support each other during the circumnavigation.”

On taking delivery of People Sea in 2018 and with limited off-shore sailing experience at that time, Peter opted to have support from Oyster with him for the two big crossings to Southern Europe and then across the Atlantic. “This was great for gaining experience,” he says. “I viewed it as doing a crossing and a sailing academy at the same time.”

He’s ensuring he has all the requisite qualifications required by Oyster to skipper a yacht in the rally. Peter says, “It’s great that Oyster has a list of minimum requirements for a skipper. My sailing learning was through the US scheme ASA sailing, and now I’ve been taking all the RYA courses online. I’ve also added an intensive Marine Weather Certification and Celestial Navigation Certification in the US.” He admits he’s been practicing his celestial navigation skills.

“I can take readings and could triangulate using the afternoon sun set with a reasonable level of accuracy if required in an emergency. However, I wouldn’t like to be without GPS for an entire crossing just yet!”

Sailing to exciting, far off the beaten track destinations is a key attraction, along with the company and support of other participants and the Oyster team. “It’s the camaraderie, being with like-minded friends that we’ve already met through buying the boat. The rally provides the opportunity for group learning, being able to support each other during the circumnavigation,” he concludes.

T H E W H I T E F A M I LY OYSTER 625 MAKARA

Susan and husband Dominic, Luke (16) and Charlie-May (13) will be sailing Oyster 625 Makara in the next Rally, but Susan hasn’t stepped on board their yacht yet.

“The pandemic changed everything, it was the final push we needed to make our dream a reality now,” Susan explains. The family had always wanted to sail around the world, but planned to wait until their children had finished their GCSE exams in two years’ time.

“We wanted to find a sensible, safe and adventurous way to make this dream come true,” says Susan. They heard about the Oyster World Rally, joined some of the destination webinars and met some friendly Oyster owners.

“The Oyster World Rally ticked all the boxes. As soon as we decided, we took action and immediately put down the deposit for the next event, even though we hadn’t got a boat or were even close to having enough sailing experience,” says Susan.

As relatively inexperienced sailors, they wanted professional experienced crew with them, so needed space for six people on board. “We weren’t really sure exactly what we were looking for, but started to build quite a long wish list,” explains Susan. “We showed Jamie, Director of Brokerage at Oyster our wish list and he said, you need a 625, that gives you everything you want.”

Makara was bought in October 2020 and is currently being refitted at the Oyster Service Centre in Palma. “We’re putting a lot of tender loving care into her with the help of the service team at Oyster,” says Susan.

Being part of the ‘Oyster family’ is an incredible experience. They share a lot of our personal values and have a ‘can do’ attitude. As a company they all hold themselves to very high standards and I can’t fault any of them.

Along with the MCA (Medical First Aid at Sea course), Dominic will have his RYA Yachtmaster Ocean theory with Susan qualified as RYA Day Skipper. All the family are doing the basic safety and survival at sea courses, with Luke and Charlie-May taking PADI junior certification. Scuba diving is something the whole family are looking forward to doing on the trip.

Luke has sold his much-loved gaming computer to buy a highquality professional drone, and will complete a professional drone operator’s course so he can film during the Oyster World Rally, while Charlie-May will be vlogging using her new Go-Pro. Professional crew were arranged through the Oyster Crew Service.

“Charlie Durham has been amazing,” says Susan. “She really worked to understand our requirements, values and our needs as a family. We all want to be seasoned sailors by the end of the circumnavigation, and we need a skipper and crew who will be really safe and responsible, but who will also help teach us and improve our skills. We need people who have the same mindset as ours, so we can create a strong happy team on board, and who will make it safe and enjoyable along the way.”

“Being part of the ‘Oyster family’ is an incredible experience,” says Susan. “They share a lot of our personal values and have a ‘can do’ attitude. As a company they all hold themselves to very high standards and I can’t fault any of them. In fact, we’ve really become close friends with many of them.”

By bringing forward their circumnavigation, the family have put themselves under pressure, but are confident that by sailing with professional crew on board, this circumnavigation will prove to be a really special experience.

Crossing the Atlantic and spending time cruising around the islands would be living the dream. But as Matthew Sheahan discovered, this turned out to be just the start and a much bigger trip was now on their minds.

Three years after setting out from the UK and with 17,000 miles under Uhuru’s keel, including visits to 34 nations, James and his crew are in New Zealand sitting out the Covid crisis. But in keeping with a positive approach that has characterised their trip from the start, they have used the time to their advantage and have been undertaking a re-fit of Uhuru.

Their trip so far has been a fascinating one that has seen Uhuru’s crew take a very different approach to a Pacific crossing, so while James was on terra firma, I took the opportunity to ask him about some of the most memorable parts of the Pacific crossing, along with some of his favourite places.

He began by outlining how they had set about planning the trip.

“After our time in the Caribbean, we sat down and asked ourselves what we had learned that we could carry forward for our trip,” he explained. “And there were three things.

“The first was to maintain our four to one ratio of time under sail to time on land. And that meant that whatever we did, we had to drastically cut down the number of planned visits, or dramatically increase the time that the trip would take.

“The second was to be a lot more relaxed about visitors and not committing to a specific time and a place a long way out which risked putting us under pressure.

Instead, we would tell them the area that we would be by a certain date and that they may have to then be prepared to wait for a few days to get joining instructions. It worked well for both sides.

“And the third thing we realised was that our best adventures had been the ones that were off the beaten track. For example, in the Caribbean it had been anchoring off the coast of the Dominican Republic that is a breeding ground for humpback whales.

It’s 12 metres deep in the middle of nowhere and we spent a couple of days there, surrounded by baby humpback whales, and diving in the water with them.

It was superb.

“So, our plan for the Pacific was to get away from the main cruising routes as much as possible and it proved to be spot on.”

ISLA DEL COCO As they left Panama and with the majority of the cruising fleet heading for Galapagos or the Marquesas islands, Uhuru turned north to Costa Rica.

“There is a liveaboard dive boat that arrives every two months, so we timed it so that our guide could get off onto this boat which would take him back to Costa Rica.”

“We wanted to go to Isla del Coco,” he continued. “The problem is that to go there you have to leave from Costa Rica, which means heading something like 500 miles north first. We also had to go there to pick up the scuba diving instructor that we had pre-booked. It is a legal requirement to have one if you’re going to dive in Isla del Coco.

It was clearly a trip that was worth doing, but drill down into the detail and the project took a good bit of planning.

“It was well worth the effort though. There was no one else there, just us and our boat on this uninhabited island. We were diving around three times a day and each time we’d be with amazing sea life including huge hammerhead sharks, bait balls of fish, Galapagos sharks.

“It took around six months to organise,” he said. “Of course, now I know what to do I could do it a lot quicker next time around, but there are all kinds of things that you need to consider and sort out, not least of all whether your guide is prepared to sail on your boat for three or four days and sleep on one of the settee berths, on what was quite a busy boat. Plus of course, arranging enough scuba gear for eight people and so on. But it was completely worth the effort.”

“We spent a month there in total which was great. But during our stay we met a couple, Simon and Pippa, who inspired us to head to Easter Island. This was in contrast to most boats that were heading to the Marquesas.

civilisation you are. Midway between South America and New Zealand you really are in the middle of nowhere, heading into the abyss, towards the Southern Ocean.

“It was upwind for most of the way and we were bashing into swells coming up from the south so it wasn’t particularly pleasant sailing.

“It took us a while to decide to do it, mainly because we were apprehensive about it and had quite a few people telling us that Easter Island wasn’t such a great idea and was difficult, even dangerous. But we looked at it really carefully and in the end decided to go.

“We did have two days with no wind and on Easter Sunday we stopped for a swim around the boat in middle of nowhere followed by a big roast lunch which was pretty cool. But, after 17 days sailing, when we got there we discovered that Easter Island is not what people had led us to believe.

“I have to admit that while the trip was fine, I did have a bit of a panic attack at one point. I think I just got spooked for a moment, it’s easily done when you look at the chart and see just how far away from

cafes and bars, it’s absolutely beautiful. In fact, I plan to go back for a month or two.”

The visit wasn’t without its challenges though. “Anchorages are a problem. When we got there, the main port was closed because of a large swell, so we had to hide around the corner in another anchorage which wasn’t very comfortable.

“The port was closed for some time so the only way we could get ashore was to put our wetsuits on, put our gear into waterproof bags and get on our surfboards and head for the shore.

“We had an amazing two weeks there and wish we could have stayed longer.”

PITCAIRN & DUCIE By this stage, James and his crew were getting used to the new level of remoteness, at least they thought they were. And then came Pitcairn.

“There is something incredibly strange about arriving in a UK territory in the middle of nowhere, and I mean nowhere! Easter Island is remote, but Pitcairn is one step more.

“When you get there you just see this solitary rock and as we approached and listened on the radio you hear UK Somerset accents. Right from the off, before we had even arrived they were so welcoming, inviting us to a party that evening before we’d even got ashore.

“Not that many people get to go there and it’s easy to see why as the anchorages are pretty horrendous. But we were really lucky with our approach and were the only boat in the anchorage.

“A quad bike collected us and took us up to the top of the island where it seemed that the entire population was indeed out for a party. It’s a fantastic and charming island and we stayed there for quite a while. The locals were really friendly and took us spear fishing and showed us the ballast of the Bounty, which is, of course, one of the things that this area is famous for.”

But if Pitcairn felt special, the volcanic island of Ducie to the east felt even more remote.

“I think I read somewhere that only 100 boats have visited this island and I wouldn’t be surprised. There is no anchorage at all. It’s a lagoon with thousands of birds as it is a breeding ground for petrels and shearwaters.

a beautiful but surreal moment when we thought about how we were 3,000 miles from anywhere, other than Pitcairn, sitting on a beach.

But there was a really sad part to this and that was the amount of plastic that had been washed up on the island, it’s all over the place, it’s heart breaking.

Acutely aware of just how quickly conditions could change and how untenable their anchorage would become, two nights was all the team dared to stay.

From here, as they continued towards New Zealand, their trip took them via French Polynesia, Society Islands and then the Cook Islands.

“The weather was very kind to us and we managed to find a tiny patch of sand to anchor in which meant we were able to get ashore for a beach barbeque. It was L IFE

COOK ISLANDS “One of the things I was very diligent about was emailing ahead to where we were going to ask whether there was anything we could bring to help, which was very much appreciated. In return, we were often given loads of fruit and vegetables which was great.

“In the Cook Islands we did the same thing, but this time we were asked if we could take a girl who was a relative of someone on another island which was about a six or seven day sail away. We said that would be fine, but then later on she asked if she could bring a boy that she had met which we agreed to. But then, when the day came and she turned up on the dock, she had a mountain of kit from bags of rice, potatoes, crates of Coca Cola, a TV and plenty more, there must have been a tonne in weight, it was crazy.

“In the end we managed to squeeze it all into a bag that we strapped down on the foredeck. When we got to the island, the local family were so grateful and invited us to stay with them, they cooked for us and took us to some amazing remote atoll where we camped overnight on the beach.

It was a really special visit.

“Another amazing place we stopped at was Niue. It’s another tiny island with no places to anchor as it rises 300m straight up from the sea bed, but we managed to get one of the remaining deep water moorings. We were very lucky because there were boats coming all the time that had been sailing for a week and had to pass by and keep going as there was nowhere to stop.

From there, Tonga was our next stop which was memorable for being one of the few places where you can swim with humpback whales.

PLANNING AHEAD Having spent a year in New Zealand working on the boat, James has also been planning the next stage of their adventure which was due to take Uhuru and her crew further west. But now James has other plans.

“I’m not convinced that the Covid situation will have been resolved sufficiently that things will open up in 2021. By June time it will be too late to start the next stage of our trip, which was to head to New Guinea and I don’t want to spend the whole year nervous and worried about what lies ahead, so I’ve decided to head back to French Polynesia.

“We’re going to go back and do it all over again. And I couldn’t be more excited.”

In late 2019, I took my seat at the table with the Oyster Yachts board. At the top of the agenda was the idea for a new, smaller addition to the range that looked like very promising territory for the brand. This idea was the subject of much discussion and could have gone in a number of directions. Whichever way it went, there was a solid consensus around the table that it must retain the core values that have made Oyster Yachts so special and, at the same time, lay out a blueprint for the future.

The result is the new Oyster 495, created in collaboration with a highly experienced team including Oyster owner/CEO Richard Hadida and myself, along with naval architects Tom and Rob Humphreys and Oyster’s own in-house design studio. BELOW DECK The saloon is bright and spacious, with more light in the navigation and galley areas courtesy of the deck saloon windows that have been extended aft. The u-shaped galley has plenty of space for all the appliances anyone could wish for. It is practical and easy-to-use, and it connects with the saloon itself, making it very much a part of this welcoming social space. On a practical note, we also managed to include a handy space behind the nav area where you can fit a washer/dryer if you wish.

With three cabins there is plenty of space for family and friends to relax. On a practical level, another nice feature that has been adapted from our larger models is the large self-contained machinery room. It is soundproofed (perfect for families with youngsters) and has enough space for an optional generator while still allowing access for maintenance via large doors and hatches.

The team opted for a 110-horsepower auxiliary which, in extreme conditions, will give ample ‘get home’ power.

PERFORMANCE AND EASE OF HANDLING Effortless handling is a given with an Oyster and never more so than with the 495.

The Humphreys G6 hull design has been optimised with state-of-the-art computerbased design tools. She has very clean hull lines and carries her beam well aft. As well

as creating a striking look, this contributes to form stability and sailing performance.

We have all been very taken with the twin rudder configurations on our larger yachts, created by Rob and Tom Humphreys applying the same approach here makes her light and easy on the steering, even in the most boisterous conditions.

The stern of the 495 shows just how much thought has gone into every aspect of her design. The transom houses a neat, powered boarding/bathing platform, which is push-button operated from the deck.

The perfect spot for fun with the family, it is also eminently practical for boarding and departing on your tender. The large quarter aft pushpit seats will definitely be a popular option, creating a favourite spot for a relaxed sunset drink or just enjoying the yacht under sail from a very comfortable vantage point. The stern deck has been designed flat for sunbathing and the flush foredeck offers plenty of space for more of the same inactivity.

ON DECK Like larger Oyster models, the deck layout is simple with concealed lines and sheets. A range of efficient sail handling controls are within easy reach, including powered in-mast furling and powered self-tailing winches to make push-button sail handling a reality. The non-overlapping rig allows the benefit of wide spreaders and chainplates outboard at the deck edge to minimise rigging loads. This also makes her easy to tack, while the inboard jib sheet leads are positioned to optimise upwind sailing angles.

With high hopes of sparking a love for sailing, Chris Shea first took his wife, Susan, on a holiday in Scotland in a 32-footer. They spent a week beating round Mull. “I thought we would live the dream,” he laughs.

Shea's family never quite shared his enthusiasm, he says, until 2014 when they decided to charter an Oyster 66 in the Caribbean. “I had been interested in Oysters for many years and when I started to be at the point where I thought I might be able to buy, I decided to charter.”

The moment Susan stepped aboard, he says, “she felt entirely confident in the crew running it. The hostess/cook and crewmate were lovely, entertaining women and it was great fun.” The level of luxury and comfort was a game changer. “The family thought: if this is what we are going to do, that is fine.”

I had been interested in Oysters for many years and when I started to be at the point where I thought I might be able to buy, I decided to charter.

Once bitten by the Oyster bug there was no going back. The following year an order for a new Oyster 56, Magrathea, was on the books, followed two years afterwards by an Oyster 72. Both were immediately and continuously marketed for charter through the Oyster Charter service until the Sheas sold Magrathea in 2015.

Charter allows owners to offset the costs of running their boat and employ crew to maintain it year round. That can keep a yacht in prime order and provide extraordinary value in terms of carefree, luxury sailing and boat ownership.

“It has turned out to be a great combination.

I have a large boat for my personal use but at the same time I have an income from the chartering business,” he says.

After crossing the Atlantic in his Oyster 54, Alan Parker found his horizons expanding.

“I wanted to travel further, sailing in the Caribbean in the winter and the Mediterranean in summer, and maybe even further into the Pacific,” he says. He owned a property in Mallorca and thought that an Oyster 82 “could be the same as having a villa but be mobile”, so he sold the villa and bought the five-year-old Dama de Noche for charter and his own use.

It has turned out to be a great combination. I have a large boat for my personal use but at the same time I have an income from the chartering business.

Having a full-time professional crew means Parker and his family get to use their boat perhaps more than they might otherwise do. "Being a charter boat it is used much, much more, doing the Caribbean season in winter and the Med season in summer so we are chartering 12-20 weeks a year. But we use it ourselves for about ten weeks a year and we’ve crossed the Atlantic twice,” he says. “Our experience with charter is that you tend to have bigger horizons and go more places.”

WHY CHARTER? Oyster’s charter management service was set up in 2005 by the then company owner Richard Matthews and Molly Marston.

Chartering is something to be considered by anyone who is thinking of buying a yacht large enough to require crew, says Marston, Head of Oyster Charter.

A full-time crew will establish a consistent maintenance schedule, deliver the yacht to where it should be and look after the day-to-day minutiae. Working together with the crew to coordinate the charter and schedule details, Marston’s aim is to alleviate ‘ownership angst’. “You shouldn’t have to think about your yacht except when you’re using it,” she says.

Richard Matthews owns an extended Oyster 82, Midnight, which he charters through Oyster for about eight to ten weeks a year.

“We give charter bookings a priority and then use the time around it,” he explains.

But he emphasises: “The key to the whole thing is understanding that most owners don’t expect to turn a profit, they do it as a way of offsetting running costs.

For me, going back 30 years, I have always taken the view that it keeps the boat in better condition and I have the boat moved around. Chartering makes sense, otherwise a boat is like a horse in a stable: it continues to eat.”

THE RIGHT FORMULA FOR CHARTER So what is the right size of yacht for chartering and what are the costs and income that you could expect? Molly Marston says that “56ft and above” is ideal. Yachts of between 60ft and 70ft would need two crew and from 80ft upwards you would need three: a skipper, mate and stewardess.

The Oyster 885 is something of a sweet spot, in that it borders on superyacht territory yet stays within the 24m ruling for charter coding. Above this size, additional crew, such as an engineer and another stewardess, would be required.

Typical rates for charter vary from €18,000 a week for an Oyster 625 to €45,000 a week for an Oyster 885. If using the Oyster charter service, the owner will net 80% of that.

A yacht has to be available in the right places at peak times, typically in the Caribbean over the winter, and the Mediterranean or New England in the summer. During the winter season from December to April, it is possible for an owner to sail for three weeks and charter their yacht for between four and eight weeks (the latter if the yacht is new) before heading across the Atlantic to Europe.

Owners who want to maximise income have to be reasonable about the use they make of it themselves, says Molly Marston. “But that won’t compromise your enjoyment with reasonable use,” she says.

guest amenities are popular. It will also recommend a management company to help with corporate set-up and regulatory requirements, such as MCA coding and MLC compliance, which may be needed to ensure the vessel is legal to charter.

“In most cases, I would say yes, but it depends on family circumstances. It works really well provided you don’t have expectations to use your yacht continuously in the high season. You will need to be realistic. Christmas, Easter and the high season of July and August are prime times and if you want to use it then yourself, you may be disappointed,” he advises.

Oyster Charter markets the yacht worldwide to clients and industry brokers, puts together all the contacts and charter schedule, handles funds and is the liaison between owner, crew and guests. A starting point is always understanding how much an owner wishes to use their own boat, and where.

“With the right crew, you offset potentially 50% of maintenance costs with a handson approach, ongoing work that would otherwise need to be paid for. And it is a huge advantage that you can turn up and your boat is totally ready to go and the menu planned.”

“The service means you don’t have to worry about all the contractual and payment issues,” says Chris Shea. “Much more significantly, Magrathea was marketed with full knowledge of my own plans for her use. Prospective customers were matched with the way we liked the boat and the crew to be used.”

“It is totally flexible and I adapt a programme to meet the owners’ views,” says Molly Marston. “If someone only wants to charter two weeks per year, that is fine.

If they want as much as possible, that is also fine. The goal is to make chartering a good fit with each owner. We are one of the only companies with in-house charter

management and it’s like a boutique – it is customised for the owner and it has to feel right.”

Most owners operate their yacht as a business and offset business costs, which means that they pay the charter fee and VAT in the country where they use their boat.

“You can’t run with the hare and hunt with the hounds,” cautions Richard Matthews.

“People fall into the trap of trying to have the best of both worlds and that is not realistic. EU countries have different rules pertaining to charter and a lot require a licence and undertake safety checks.”

He counsels that a good crew is fundamental in making charter work. Finding the right people is also something Oyster undertakes through its introduction and vetting service.

“It’s all about having the right crew,” he says. “You are in a confined space and the crew have to strike the right balance as people have different expectations. They could want fine dining or hands-on sailing, or a party, or family time with swimming, snorkelling and paddleboarding.”

But he believes that running as a charter business actually helps with getting a suitable skipper and crew. “Good crew don’t want to sit on the dock. They are there because they love the sailing,” he says. Owner Alan Parker agrees. “You tend to find people who are more experienced and like being charter skippers and that opens up new possibilities,” he says.

TRY IT OU T BY CHARTERING A YA C H T If you want to know whether owning and chartering is for you, there is no better way than chartering someone else’s yacht first to experience how it works. It enables people who are not expert sailors to learn from professional crew. Guests don’t need any sailing knowledge at all, or they can be super energetic, do lots of miles and get hands on.

Even if you decide to buy an Oyster, chartering can be worthwhile. Chris Shea did exactly that while his Oyster 72 Magrathea was being built. “Building times are substantial so there is plenty of sailing to be done before delivery. There is also the issue of deciding on the options. What better way than to review them on real boats?

Better yet, why not quiz the crew mercilessly about what should and should not be added.

Now he has sold his yacht and is back to chartering on other people’s, he looks back on the experience as entirely positive. “Our crew were very careful and respectful of our feelings. It was extremely good, the boat was never damaged, the crew were happy and we had all the charters we wanted.”

Alan Parker says: “It has turned out to be a great combination having a large boat for our own personal use and at the same time an income. I am retired now so I could possibly squeeze in more time in terms of long distance trips and potentially go around the world or to New Zealand. That is going into a different phase of usage, though. For now, I have got a very happy medium.”

A

s director of Dorna Sports, Pau has been flying around the globe for the last 22 years organising (amongst many other things) the MotoGP World championships. Helena has her own sales and marketing consultancy serving luxury hotels. Early in lockdown, they decided to relocate, with son Gabriel, to their Oyster 575-32 Mastegot, moored in Port Vell, Barcelona.

The change has been wonderful. For the last seven months they have lived and worked from Mastegot and made the most of their time. “It feels like summer has gone on forever, yet it’s also passed by so quickly,” Helena says. For Gabriel, it’s been the summer of a lifetime. “Even going back to school was more fun,” he said, “because I could jump off the boat, down the pontoons through the marina to school. After school, my friends would come back and hang out on Mastegot. Most days, Dad would get the tender out and we’d go swimming and wakeboarding.”

For Pau, it meant a welcome break from 22 years of flying around the world on business. “I enjoyed more time on Mastegot

moored in Barcelona when Gabriel attended the school, or sailing around the south of France and the Balearic Islands in the summer months.”

But even an idyllic lifestyle comes with its own challenges. “I have to be really careful with the camera angles on video calls on board,” says Helena with a big smile. “One of my clients, who actually owns a boat too, is a little jealous of the Mastegot’s interior.”

Pau’s passion for motorcycles and yachts started young. Against his parents’ wishes, he competed in motorcycle races before deciding to make it his career rather than his hobby. “I was a keen windsurfer when I was 15 and bought my first cruising boat when I was 28. It was nothing like this,” he laughs. “Very basic, no hot water, no fridge, no autopilot, but we loved cruising around the Balearics in it.” Helena was also a keen sailor when they met, and Pau’s son Gabriel was practically born on the water. “We gradually increased the sizes of our yachts, from 27 ft, 36 ft, 42 ft, then 53 ft.” The family have all gained their sailing qualifications, with Gabriel taking his Coastal Skipper just after his 16th birthday.

au’s Oyster epiphany happened midway across the Atlantic, while taking part in the ARC rally two years ago, “I won’t say what make it was, but myself and a couple of friends were sailing a brand new 62 foot production boat across to St Lucia, and the boat had a lot of problems,” he explains. “I’d always dreamt of having a really nice boat to sail around the world in, and that’s when I knew I wanted an Oyster. I wanted a boat that was the absolute best for safety and quality.”

The family had seen lots of Oyster yachts during their time spent cruising around Mallorca, and especially in Palma where the Oyster Service Centre is located.

They were delighted when they found 575-32 for sale through Oyster Brokerage.

“She was in excellent condition,” says Helena, “and we really liked the layout and cabin configuration. She’s very light and airy inside.”

Renamed Mastegot, the boat was booked into the Oyster Service Centre in Palma for minor interior modifications before she was handed over. “I’ve only got one word to say about the team at Palma,” says Helena, “and that’s excellent! I cannot praise them highly enough. Every single member of staff is professional, well-trained and welcoming.”

Pau agrees: “If you’ve been cruising and anything needs fixing, however small, you just call up and book in. It’s a fantastic service.”

he Oyster 575 exceeded Pau’s expectations – in fact, she was a dream come true. “She’s even better than I had hoped,” he says. “She’s a solid boat, so she’s really good at sea and for a high-quality, well-equipped boat, much faster than I expected.” Even in average winds, Mastegot easily exceeds eight knots.

Easy to live aboard, she became home from home for the family.

“Every boat we’ve owned has been called Mastegot,” says Pau. One of five children, he recalls his father telling him off for being naughty with his sisters. Pau’s father would say: “Behave, or you’ll get a mastegot!” Roughly translated from Catalonian, mastegot means a smack or a scolding. “I like the irony!” laughs Pau. Fuelled by his work, Pau’s passion for speed is part of the reason why they decided to upgrade their much-loved 575 to a new larger and faster 595, currently in build. “It’s going to be a quicker boat, and that’s what we want when we sail long passages around the world,” says Pau. They are planning to take part in an Oyster World Rally in their new 595 (which will also be called Mastegot, of course!). Gabriel will be at University by then, so he will fly out and join them on various legs and stop-overs during the circumnavigation.

or both Pau and Helena, this longterm plan means they have time to make some changes to their working life too. “I will keep a couple of my key clients, who will know and understand that I am travelling, and that I may be out of contact for a while,” says Helena. Both are looking forward to taking a step back from the everyday pressures of work and really enjoy the experience.

The family are working as a team on the specifications for their new boat, drawing on their experience of sailing and living on board Mastegot over the past seven months.

“The boat will have good communication facilities on board, but we don’t want to be under pressure from work while we’re sailing,” Helena says. “It’s more important that we can keep in contact with Gabriel and our parents.” Although they intend to slow down from work, it doesn’t apply to their sailing. One of the attractive features of the 595 is its hull shape and bow which are optimized for speed. “I like the twin rudder system and the fixed bow sprit too,” says Pau.

With a coastline just shy of 3,500 miles, it is the fourth longest in the States, bigger than those of Texas and California. Yet, the irony of such an expansive cruising ground is that once you are there, exploring this special region doesn’t mean that long days covering big distances are required. Instead, Maine can be enjoyed in bite-sized chunks and cruised at your leisure.

So, while we have set out a suggested programme that will help you do just that, the following guide is less of an itinerary and more of an indication as to how to enjoy two weeks of leisurely cruising based on around half a day’s sailing at a time.

Aside from its wildlife with seals, dolphins, whales and a wide variety of birds, Maine is also well known for its seafood restaurants ranging from local lobster shacks to five-star venues.

And if this appeals, you should definitely plan to schedule in some time ashore.

The bottom line is that Maine is a special place and while getting there takes a little longer and will often require patience with weather that doesn’t always play ball thanks to its famous fog, as those that have become hooked will attest, this is a very special destination and well worth the effort.

Furthermore, with this in mind and with so much to choose from, those that do want to stretch their legs a little more it is easy to extend your visit without turning the trip into a race against the clock.

THE OUTLINE PLAN For all these reasons and plenty more, the key tip is that Maine takes time. With such a large area to explore and with so much to see, accepting that two weeks only scratches the surface will help to set the right pace.

Getting the boat to the area is a mini project in itself. The 157nm trip from the Cape Cod Canal to Camden will take around 24 hours (30 hours from Newport). This can be broken down into two legs if you prefer by making the first stop after 100nm in Portland.

This city is popular with some who are joining their boats as it is close to the airport, there is a large marina and plenty of shopping and eating along with good music and nightlife. In the summer, there is a great fish market and plenty of farmers’ markets too.

I D E A S T O B U I L D A 1 4 D AY T R I P S TA R T P O I N T – C A M D E N Camden in Maine is the hub for cruising in Penobscot Bay. The sailing here offers reasonable stretches in deep open water and is similar to the Scottish Hebrides.

Camden a classic Maine town. Although it is busy with tourists in summer it is still authentic Maine. It is important to reserve dockage/moorings in advance because they sell out and the anchorage isn’t great. Lyman Morse at Wayfarer Marina is a great marina and bar and is a short walk or dinghy across into town.

As you would expect from such a hub, there is lots of shopping with several must visits that include: Bookstore/café: Owl and Turtle; Thai food/market; Long Grain - Asian restaurant; Natalie’s at Camden Harbour Inn.

Leave Camden to sail across Penobscot Bay and anchor in Pulpit Harbor, one of the most peaceful and protected anchorages in Maine, a quiet cove with ospreys.

D AY 9 - C A S T I N E TO ISLEBORO Gilkey Harbor is a secure anchorage with good holding ground, and is frequented by many yachts in summer. There are a number of private float landings for small craft, but no commercial wharves. Dark Harbor has grocery and hardware stores, a snack bar, and a gas station. Craft visiting the resort tie up at the yacht club or other private floats in Gilkey Harbor.

Here, one of the key places to visit is the Farnsworth museum which offers a nationally recognised collection of works from many of America’s greatest artists such as Andrew Wyeth.

D AY 3 - N O R T H H AV E N T O M C G L AT H E R Y I S L A N D In the morning, continue east through Fox Island Thorofare to Merchant’s Row, just south of Deer Isle. There are many islands here with beautiful small coves in which to anchor for the evening. McGlathery Island is a must where you can anchor at the eastern end. This is a protected uninhabited island which has a nice sandy beach and a path that goes around the island. This is a favourite island for those in the know.

D AY 8 - C E N T E R HARBOR TO CASTINE Castine is a small Maine town on the mainland. There are a few quaint stores and a decent market. This is where the Maine Maritime Academy is based, sometimes the huge research ship is on the dock. Denett’s Wharf is a nice place to eat. The tide can rip in this harbour so docking can be tricky. You may want to get a mooring for a few hours and then tuck into Smith Cove for the night.

Heading northwest takes you through the Eggemoggin Reach to Center Harbor.

This is an amazing sail with the right wind and clear sky. The town of Brooklin offers a General Store, the cosy Morning Moon café and possibly the most charming public library on the planet.

There are plenty of craft shops and galleries which are all an easy stroll from here down to the Reach.

Take in some local flavour at the Brooklin Inn where in the basement you can chat with some of the local characters from the Wooden Boat School. The Brooklin Boatyard is a great place to check out the local marina life, opened in 1960 by Joel White and presently operated by his son Steve. They have the best craftsmen in the state and visitors are welcome. Ask for Steve, Frank or John to give you a tour. For dinner, have a lobster bake at the Wooden Boat School Building.

D AY 6 - N O R T H E A S T H A R B O R TO S WA N S I S L A N D Heading back towards the south west, Swans Island feels remote and has the true flavour of the Penobscot. This island makes its living fishing for lobster and is virtually untouched by tourism. There is a totally protected harbour and rental moorings. You can sleep well and secure here. Good lobster is available and this is a great place to explore the town on foot, or with dinghy. A lovely Maine place.

Head northeast for Mount Desert Island, the home of Acadia National Park. If you enjoy hiking there are miles of beautiful trails to explore. Another option is to sail into Somes Sound on the south side of the island. The only fijord on the east coast, Valley Cove is a great spot to anchor for lunch. Spend the night on a mooring in Southwest Harbor.

BEST TIME TO CRUISE While Maine is a beautiful part of the world, those that know it well say the best time to visit is during the last three weeks in August. The water is warm and the weather is usually settled.

However, it’s important to remember that this is still an exposed coastline that has a reputation for fog and will generally be colder than further south.

Just as those who are familiar with the west coast of Scotland take each and every sunny day as a bonus, so the same can be true of Maine. As a result, so long as you’re armed with realistic expectations and ready to take the weather as it comes it will always be a stunning place to visit.

We had an amazing summer in Maine on Dama de Noche, with all the family rotating in shifts.

It truly is a magical coastline, like Cornwall on steroids! I really recommend it for the cruising experience of a lifetime, as long as you don't mind zig zagging through a million lobster pots. p.s. the lobsters themselves are worth visiting for alone!

Q&A

We take a look behind the scenes at our boat yards, discovering more about the people who bring our yachts to life and the time-honoured skills they bring to their jobs. We recently caught up with Matt Cook, Assistant Joinery Manager at Wroxham, to hear about the important role he and his team play in every yacht.

What does your role involve?

I organise and co-ordinate the joinery work on the 565, 595 and 675 models. Day to day, I work closely with boat builders, joiners, finishers and varnishers through to the Mill and CNC department to ensure the exacting standards and attention to detail. I’m involved in every part of the boat build and I have very high standards – some might say I’m a bit pedantic, but I like to think of it as thorough!

For me, the ultimate satisfaction of the role is the end result – seeing a stunning yacht built to the very highest standards leave the workshop. It’s very rewarding and instills a great sense of pride.

What’s your background?

I’m a joiner by trade. I started out restoring sash windows and working on listed building restoration, then I made the move into the marine sector in 2008 when I joined Oyster Yachts and I’ve never looked back.

I’ve worked with my hands my whole life, but in recent years I’ve been able to adapt and use my knowledge and expertise to oversee and co-ordinate all the joinery work at Oyster Wroxham.

What attracted you to the business?

The reputation. Oyster Yachts are recognised as the best sailing yacht makers in the industry, so when the opportunity came up I didn’t hesitate! The role met with the reputation and the skill levels of the team and their pride in the workmanship was at a standard beyond my expectation. Oyster Yachts are built to last a lifetime, some are even passed down through generations of families. For me, the ultimate satisfaction of the role is the end result – seeing a stunning yacht, built to the very highest standards, leave the workshop. It’s very rewarding and instils a great sense of pride.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

Teamwork and collaboration. Bringing all the departments and owners together as part of a brilliant team to produce a very special product. I love solving all sorts of challenges to deliver unique finishes and options to meet owners’ requests.

What changes have you seen since you joined Oyster?

There have been lots of positive changes under Richard Hadida, to the yachts and the brand. In production there is an ongoing programme of value engineering and continual improvement in quality.

I've seen the introduction of new build techniques on the Oyster 595. It lets us operate an even higher level of quality control and we’re always pushing to make things even better. The introduction of wiring looms has made a huge difference too. Now they are wired up on the joinery in the workshop, which is much easier and more efficient – so, when they go into the boat, it’s plug-and-play.

We work hand-in-hand with the designers – we see them as craftsmen too, their computers are the equivalent of our hammers and chisels. In the end, it’s all based on the core values of the company, which comes down to quality and moving with the times.

We embrace new ways of working, using machines and techniques to improve quality of the build and give the craftspeople more time to perfect those finishes only human hands can create.

It’s all about the best quality. Hardwoods like oak, teak and cherry are not so forgiving, so you have to be more accurate. Everyone has responsibility to make things as good as they can be and that’s where the team’s confidence, skills and experience really count. The Oyster standard is very, very high, but you’re always looking to push past it, to make things even better.

How do you feel when you see a finished Oyster leaving the yard?

We understand we are building a sailor’s dream yacht, in some cases a yacht they might have aspired to own all their lives. So it’s a very special feeling when we see the yachts leave the yard and get feedback from the commissioning team when they hand her over to an extremely happy and excited owner. We often get personal letters of thanks from owners too – they’ve invested a lot in us and trust in our workmanship. When you’re building someone’s dream, you take a lot of pride in the finish and it’s nice when that is acknowledged.

Why are owner visits so important?

It’s great to meet the people you’re building for.

Hearing their plans for the boat, we get a sense of the sort of adventures she will go on and be used for. It helps give the team a sense of her identity and it makes each yacht more unique. Seeing the owners’ excitement and passion gives us a greater sense of pride in the job. Owners love seeing the high standards of craftsmanship going into their yacht, it creates a real connection. I always make a point of introducing the owners to the people working on their boat by name.

Hopefully one day they will look at a piece of joinery when they’re somewhere far away and remember who built it. All of our yachts leave the yard with a build plaque which displays the signatures of the lead trades that built them. It gives us immense pride and can bring a tear or two to the owners’ eyes when they see it for the first time.

What’s so special about an Oyster?

It’s great being part of the family, it’s very supportive – I joined 13 years ago and I still love it. We are all focused on delivering the promise our yachts hold.

The attention to detail that goes into each of them is really important, always looking at making things better. Staying loyal to a brand is ultimately all about trust, which is why the Kjaernes family continues to uphold its long-term association with Oyster. Thirty five years since his father Nils bought an Oyster 46, Jorgen is now enjoying time with family and friends aboard his second new Oyster Chione II. Sue Pelling talks to Jorgen about his latest acquisition.

Jorgen Kjaernes confesses an addiction to the ocean which is why he is never without a yacht. He says his passion for sailing started at an early age and living in a house with a private jetty at the end of the garden, just south of Oslo, Norway, didn’t help his obsession either.

“I had my first boat at the age of eight; an Optimist and then a Flipper Scow, which I raced at the local sailing club. My early days on the water however, I remember vividly, sailing alone punching through the waves out towards the open ocean. Feeling totally connected to the sea and knowing that on the other side was first England and then America. I knew that one day, I would not turn at the lighthouse as I normally did, but would carry straight on!”

LIVING THE DREAM Kjaernes’ obsession with sailing continued into his youth with offshore racing. His first real taste of Oysters, however, was when his father swapped his Hallberg Rassy 41 for a new Oyster 46 in 1986. That was where the fun started.

Kjaernes continued: “Three friends from school (Dan Skjelberg, Christen Agerup, and Osmund Skorge) joined me to take the boat directly from Southampton to Mallorca where she was to be moored. In 1986, 46ft was an enormous boat and the prospect of crossing the Bay of Biscay seemed a big challenge. We took exactly ten days to reach Gibraltar and two weeks to Mallorca (total of 1,628 nautical miles) in what we saw as the trip of our lifetime.”

The delivery trip with his father’s yacht was the start of new beginnings for Kjaernes because it paved the way for his own string of Scandinavian yachts including a Sweden Yacht and a Hallberg Rassy. “It was a great way of utilising the often beautiful, but very short Scandinavian summers,” said Kjaernes “but in 2012 I decided to move my base to Mallorca and I started looking for a ‘go everywhere’ yacht that I could keep in Palma.

It wasn’t long before I made a decision to order my first Oyster, an Oyster 575, Chione I, which was delivered in 2014.”

After yet another fun delivery trip from Southampton to Palma with his trusted school friends, Kjaernes and his family enjoyed several years of extensive cruising on Chione I in the Mediterranean.

NEW HORIZONS It was however, the announcement of the Oyster 675 in 2016 that marked the ‘end of the road’ for Chione I. Kjaernes continued: “I instantly fell completely in love with the 675 and I think it was a very good salesperson at Oyster who persuaded me [he says laughing].

“I wanted a boat as large and comfortable as possible, and a boat that was built to cross oceans. She seemed to have everything including Oyster’s exceptional attention to detail finish. Also, a trial sail proved that two people could easily operate her, which was exactly what my wife and I were looking for.

“One of the attractions of sailing for my wife and I is that we can enjoy the privacy of being alone together, so we definitely did not want a boat that needed a permanent crew. Everything about the 675 was perfect for us so we placed an order and took delivery last year (2019).”

Commenting on the difference between the 575 and the 675, Kjaernes said: “The 575 was a truly lovely boat but naturally design evolves and significant improvements had trickled through to this newer model which provided enhanced living space and better performance.

The 675 is completely different; more modern, streamlined cockpit and deck layout and generally very sleek. It also has much better access to the water off the platform, which is something that really appealed to me for family cruising.”

The sale of Chione I in late 2017 and handing her over to new owners was an emotional time for the Kjaernes family but with a brand-new boat on order, it was an exciting time too. With plenty of previous yacht-owning experience, Kjaernes was keen to have a bit of input in the design layout including adding hatch access to the lazarette from the bathing platform.

“I had some ideas I wanted to incorporate such as a remodelled chart table area to include book shelves and detailed leather

work, plus steps on the cockpit coaming.

The lazarette hatch opening from the platform was something I was particularly keen on. I do believe though, that the Oyster 675 layout is quite perfect, so I actually didn’t alter much at all, just tweaked it a bit.”

THE VIKINGS RETURN Chione II was launched on 28 April 2019 and preparations for her delivery trip to Palma began. One of the most exciting aspects of the trip was the fact that the same, original crew of school friends including Dan Skjelberg, Christen Agerup, Osmund Skorge, were keen to relive their last two Kjaernes family Oyster delivery trips. “I couldn’t have wished for a better crew,” said Kjaernes. “Although we’ve had plenty of family favourite days in the Mediterranean, cruising from Gibraltar Sardinia, Corsica, and the Balearics last summer, one of the most fun and memorable I can remember is the delivery trip to Palma, which began on 22 June 2019 from Southampton.

The 675 is completely different; a more modern, streamlined cockpit and deck layout and generally very sleek. It also has much better access to the water off the platform, which is something that really appealed to me for family cruising.

“We slipped our lines at Hamble Point, headed out past the Needles, and sailed along the Channel in the most fantastic sailing weather. We couldn’t have asked for more perfect conditions for our maiden sail because we had a good breeze and a relatively calm sea. We had the Code Zero up and were flying along at 11-13kts, and clocked up 240 miles in the 24-hour period.

This was probably one of my most notable sailing experiences, not least because it was in my brand-new yacht.

“After Ushant the wind completely died so we had to turn on the motor. The sea was totally flat and we could see for miles.

Although the weather was not ideal for sailing, there was no shortage of entertainment. We suddenly spotted at least 10 blowing whales on the horizon. It was so exciting to see them and we feel so fortunate particularly as they passed us quite close by and they seemed very calm and relaxed.”

“The whole trip took a little less than three weeks but we stopped in northern Spain, and cruised the coast of southern Spain as well, so it was a real adventure.”

One other fond memory Kjaernes recalls on his new yacht is the occasion he took his father Nils on a cruise round Mallorca.

“He was 87 and suffering from a bit of dementia, but as a sailor, he loved being on board of course.

a way because sailing was something from the past he could really relate to.

It was quite a memorable night.”

He loved the excitement of it all, particularly one night while moored in Cala Portals on Mallorca, when the wind piped up to 35kts and we started to drag anchor into the bay.

Given his varied experiences aboard Chione II so far, Kjaernes was keen to point out some of the Oyster 675’s special features, the features that have made a huge difference in terms of manoeuvring and comfort.

“Can you believe my father was first on the scene, in his nightgown, and shining like a beacon in the floodlight? We were both on deck trying to tackle the situation and I remember thinking what a hilarious and surreal situation it was. It was great though as he seemed to manage well in

A BRIGHT FUTURE Looking ahead to 2021, Kjaernes, like most of us, is itching to get back on the water and enjoy a more normal sailing existence. One of the biggest events Kjaernes has already signed up for is the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers (ARC) next November. “This will be a real family affair and the perfect way to deliver the yacht to the Caribbean for the winter. We are so looking forward to it.”

The Kjaernes family has another long-term cruising plan, which should happen in 2022. Kjaernes continued: “The aim is to sail the boat up the east coast of America to Newfoundland, Greenland, Iceland, then

back to the Med via the UK. This will be a real test but preparations are already well underway.”

The power of sustainability We have wind and sun, often in plentiful supply, along with a limitless source of water. So, when it comes to cruising the world while exercising a minimal carbon footprint, we have a head start.

Sustainability is at the heart of our sport.

But there is of course plenty more to do and there is a growing desire among many new and existing owners to explore how we might reduce, or even sever our dependency on fossil fuels.

With the ability to harvest power through a combination of solar, wind and hydro generators, taking the next step towards a greener, more sustainable future seems well within our grasp.

We spoke to a number of experts in different aspects of sustainability and yachting. These include electric and hybrid propulsion experts, naval architects, sales and project managers, all of whom are continually exploring new technology and ideas that are driving sustainability and understanding how these can be applied in the yacht world.

Yet, while we can generate power on the move, the rate at which we have become dependent on electrical energy to drive devices from navigational and communication systems, to washing machines and watermakers, it is clear that our appetite for power has grown considerably in recent years. The question now is whether the various green ways of producing it can keep pace.

This is also the gateway to wider debate, that of how we operate our boats and what we expect to be able to achieve. There can be little doubt that more of us are sailing further afield and in many cases for longer. Modern technologies have played a large part in making this possible and now, having experienced a lifestyle that gives us the freedom to roam at will, we need to find better, more efficient ways to keep the show on the road.

Setting power to one side, there are other key issues that come under the sustainability heading, not least the way that we build our boats. For example, is it right to be continuing with glass reinforced plastics or should we be considering alternative materials?

Bio based resins are already making their way into some parts of the construction world, fibres produced from volcanic rock have also demonstrated some impressive structural properties that could rival carbon fibre, while new teak alternatives are providing an interesting route forward with some remarkable new materials.

Some argue that quality blue water cruisers like Oysters are rarely, if ever, scrapped and are therefore a great example of sustainability.

With such proven longevity, the need to switch to materials that can be recycled is largely irrelevant.

The reality is that sustainability provides endless avenues of debate with a multitude of factors that can take the discussion off-piste and into the thick of the detail. But the issue of power 70

is currently one of the most popular, in particular how we generate it, store it and use it, as well as considering what role the conventional combustion engine should play.

“I believe there will be areas of the world that will not allow combustion engines to be run in the future,” says electric and hybrid propulsion expert Jamie Marley. “Certain areas will only be accessible by boats with zero emissions. So, at the very least, looking to sustainable solutions now could have a big bearing on where you could go in the future, which could also influence the future value of your yacht.”

Considering what you might want to do in the future is a good starting point, whether you are looking to day sail around the Mediterranean or set off around the world.

Solar power seems like an obvious choice for a yacht and technology is available that can be built-in or retrofitted to your Oyster. However, as Simon Uphill, Lead Electrical Engineer at Oyster Yachts points out, the technology is not up to making a significant contribution to a yacht’s energy needs yet. Add in the cost versus the energy delivered, the return on investment currently makes serious solar power a nice-to-have. As the technology develops, we hope to see strides made in perfecting more efficient and affordable solar solutions.

We discuss some of the key sustainability issues that an owner might have, whether it be generating sufficient power for the hotel services, or electrical power for a hybrid propulsion system. At this level there are some fundamental issues to consider which help focus the mind, such as the ability to motor off a lee shore in 30-40 knots of wind.

“Whatever the size of boat, we always begin by talking to the owner in detail about what they are looking to achieve,” explains sales director Richard Gibson. “From here you can start to look at how you will run the boat which, in turn, then leads you to the kind of systems that you might want to consider.

“Then we can discuss some of the key sustainability issues that an owner might have, whether it be generating sufficient power for the hotel services, or electrical power for a hybrid propulsion system.

At this level there are some fundamental issues to consider which help focus the mind, such as the ability to motor off a lee shore in 30-40 knots of wind.

“Another is assessing what the main loads for the electrical system will be – is the goal to have silent running overnight, or is a hybrid power train the key objective? Are they looking to charge the batteries using a dedicated hydro generator while on passage, or is the objective to utilise an electrical drive unit that can switch roles to regenerate when the boat is under sail?”

Naturally, these are just starting points and while most would doubtless set their target as using a conventional engine as little as possible, it is worth putting the challenge into context.

“Making a simple comparison between the energy in diesel fuel versus a modern lithium ion battery puts this into perspective,” explains Oyster After Sales expert Eddie Scougall. “A modern lithium battery delivers around 7 per cent of the energy you get from the same weight of diesel fuel. So you need around 14 times the weight in batteries to replace the diesel.”

Naturally, this is simply an illustration of the scale of the issue. In fact it is the technical advantages of lithium ion batteries that are a key factor in enabling the new sustainable approach.

“Although the initial expense is more than for a set of conventional gel batteries, there are some significant advantages,” says project manager Andy Armshaw. “Firstly, the number of cycles the batteries can do in a lifespan is far greater. Ten years ago I managed an Oyster 65 with lithium ion batteries and they were only replaced last year.

Compare that to an Oyster 72 I managed with gel batteries and we had to replace these batteries after six years.

“Lithium ion batteries are a lot more usable throughout their range too, in that they can drop to a much lower voltage without any voltage drop in the system. You can charge them more quickly as well, which reduces your generator run time, plus they are much lighter than conventional gels. So, for me they are an easy win.”

But the lithium ion route can provide further knock-on benefits, as lead electrician Simon Uphill explains.

“Mastervolt supply a fuse and isolator kit, which is mounted on a bracket directly on top of the lithium ion batteries. Historically, it has been tricky getting the fuse and isolator in a location close to the batteries, but with this system it’s much easier because the lithium batteries take up far less space than the gel bank, plus you don't need a master shunt because the battery monitoring is built into the batteries themselves.

“Another advantage with a lithium bank is that you can make more efficient use of the fuel that you do use when running your generator. Rather than running a generator partially loaded for some of your equipment, you run your systems off a lithium bank by using an inverter to power these AC loads. You discharge your battery

banks over a period of a day and then you run your generator at full capacity for a short period of time to recharge those batteries. The result is that you run your generator far more efficiently.”

But some are looking to go further than this.

“Parallel hybrid systems put an electric motor between the prop and the propulsion engine,” continues Uphill. “This means that you can power the prop either from the running engine or from the service battery bank if you want to operate silently. The advantage here is that with this system it is possible to use the propellor as a hydro generator. Torqeedo and ServoProp are the two key companies that offer this kind of a system.”

An alternative route for regeneration is the Watt & Sea Pod 600, a dedicated unit that only acts as a hydro generator and not as a propulsion unit.

“The Pod 600 is a small unit with a 280mm propeller that sits just behind the keel, so it's well protected and, given its small size, there is no noticeable drag,” says project manager Andy Armshaw.

“We did a load analysis and established that if you’re travelling at 7-8 knots it would generate about 400 amp hours/day. At 10 knots it will increase to around 580 amp hours/day. While this might not cover the complete load, it does mean that the use of the generator could be reduced significantly, especially if you are not running air conditioning.”

But while outputs at this level can be suitable for those who are not running systems such as air-conditioning, designer Tom Humphreys points out where the boundary lies when considering hybrid power systems.

“If your propulsive loads are significantly higher than your hotel loads, it starts to look more favourable to stick with conventional diesel generators,” he says. “But if it’s the other way around, which it could easily be for a blue water cruiser in trade wind sailing, then it starts to look better to go for diesel electric or serial hybrid systems where you are supplying the hotel load more efficiently with variable speed generators. And here, hydrogeneration will do a lot to produce power for hotel loads.”

Oyster has seen good results in this area. They recommend the Watt & Sea Pod 600 — a number of owners are fitting this system to their new Oysters.

But for all the benefits of modern electrical systems and their ability to run green and silent, one of the key concerns for some owners comes down to the practicalities of heading off to remote spots while relying on high tech systems. Given the remote nature of blue water cruising, there is a concern that if repairs are required it could be difficult to find an electrical expert in the same way as you might be able to find a diesel engine engineer.

“Modern systems are extremely clever and go into limp-home-mode well before they break down or the problem becomes a hardware issue,” says Jamie Marley. “I used to be an engineer for Torqeedo and was flying all over the world, but I was travelling to install or commission systems, I wasn’t required to be a flying doctor rectifying problems. It’s easy to underestimate the level to which modern electrical systems can be interrogated remotely and so long as you can get a connection using a mobile phone or a WiFi network, or even a satellite phone, you can usually assess way more than you would be able to diagnose an internal combustion engine.”

So, while technology is changing fast, the options for greener more sustainable cruising are increasing rapidly, while also changing the way that we operate and maintain our boats. And yet, while we start with a natural advantage, the bottom line is that we are barely scratching the surface of what is possible.

Instead, finding the right boat to suit new ambitions and aspirations is frequently what drives the decision to trade up. For Domenic Pilla and Louise de Serres, the move was from their 575 to a new 745. We joined them in Southampton during the final stages of handover to find out their reasons for the upgrade.

Domenic Pilla and Louise de Serres’s love of sailing started early. At 16, Domenic began racing a Laser that he had bought in secret, while Louise was into windsurfing. Both Canadians, their first boat together was a Beneteau First 305 that they sailed on Lake Champlain, an hour’s drive from Montreal. But after a few years, family life pressed pause on boat ownership as Domenic’s work involved extensive travel, with many trips away from home.

“For around 25 years we chartered instead as we moved around,” explains Domenic.

“So even though we missed having our own boat, it was a great opportunity to explore different parts of the world from Thailand to the Mediterranean and the Caribbean.

We also got to try out a range of boats in the process which, as it turns out, helped us when it came to understanding what we might want in a boat if we ever got to own one later on.”

Unbeknown to them at the time, it was here that an affection for Oyster began.

“While we were chartering we started to see a few Oysters,” says Louise. “To us they were beautiful yachts and we kept recognising them in all kinds of places. We never thought we would own one though, we simply admired them from afar.”

In 2015 they took delivery of their Oyster 575, ‘Pearls of Nautilus’, named after their two daughters Cassandra and Alexia.

“In the lead up to ordering the 575 we had spent a great deal of time looking at a wide range of other alternatives, but it was one of our daughters that hit the nail on the head,” she continues. ‘I don’t know why you are looking at any more boats she told her father, it’s clearly an Oyster that you want!’.

She was right.”

uring the next five years Domenic and Louise covered around 10,000 miles as they cruised the Mediterranean, Caribbean and New England. For much of it they ran the boat themselves. Their methodical approach to choosing each bit of equipment and understanding how it worked played a big part in this independence. Interestingly, during this period the boat never sailed across the Atlantic, she was always shipped.

“My work responsibilities meant that we had to be back in Canada every six weeks,” explains Domenic. “Plus we wanted to see our daughters so we used those windows to ship the boat to the next destination.

Most of the time this was between Antigua or St. Thomas and Palma.

“Then there’s the cost. To sail across the Atlantic you need increased insurance, you also need to allow for other costs such as fuel, additional crew and of course the additional wear and tear on the boat. With shipping there are fewer hours put on the engine, the generator, water maker and other items that can be expensive to service.

Overall, I’d say on the 575 the cost of shipping versus sailing usually broke even.”

So, what was it that made them upgrade to their current 745?

“We wanted more space for family and friends to come and sail with us,” he continues. “Originally, when we were looking to upgrade the 575, we were looking at the 825 and the 675 as the possible options. The 825 isn’t built any more, but the bottom line was that an eighty footer was too big to handle by just the two of us, while the 675 didn’t offer the step up in size and versatility that we were looking for.

Instead, we felt that the 745 was the biggest boat that we could comfortably handle while giving us the option to accommodate a full crew when needed, yet all the while without limiting the number of guests that we could have aboard. Sailing with our family and friends is very important to us, so we think that the 745 hits the sweet spot for owner/operators like us.”

ith the key issue of size decided, the next task for the couple was to decide how the new boat should be arranged. Once again, their methodical approach, which now included a try before you buy approach, came into play.

“We chartered the Oyster 745 ‘Graycious’, which demonstrated straight away that we loved the boat, the way she sailed, her size and the ease with which she could be managed,” said Domenic. “But it also helped to crystalise our views on the accommodation layout that would suit us.

“Graycious has three cabins plus crew quarters which we felt wasn’t going to be sufficient for us. Instead, we have five cabins, five heads and a total of 11 berths.

Two of the cabins can be configured as a double or a twin. In addition, we have separate crew quarters with independent access to the deck which gives both us and them privacy.

“We also went to see the Oyster 745 at the Miami Boat Show which gave us another opportunity to look at what we would want which was clearly much easier to do than from studying drawings alone. On deck the main departure from the standard specification was to have a cutter rig.

“We believe in a cutter rig for offshore passages, we have furlers on both headsails which again makes it much easier for the two of us to handle the sail plan ourselves. We also decided to go for an in-mast furling mainsail for the same reason, simplicity of operation.

“Below the waterline we have gone for the uprated thrusters which means that we can handle her easily in harbour too, whether we are in the Caribbean or stern to in the Mediterranean. To be honest, we were a little apprehensive about docking her stern to with twin rudders, but now with the thrusters we’re very happy with this system, it works really well.”

We believe in a cutter rig for offshore passages, we have furlers on both headsails which again makes it much easier for the two of us to handle the sail plan ourselves. We also decided to go for an in-mast furling mainsail for the same reason, simplicity of operation.

But with a detailed specification comes a more complex level of equipment, all of which needs looking after. As well as chartering, over a period of years the couple had enrolled on a variety of training courses to help them feel more comfortable with the kinds of sailing they wanted to do. Having moved through the process Domenic ended up with a Commercial Yacht Master qualification.

In fact, despite being experienced sailors with many miles under their belts, training continues to be a key part of maintaining both the knowledge and the confidence to take on bigger challenges. And it is this that underpins their understanding and knowledge of the on-board systems.

“We were in the area so it made sense, as did heading to Cummings for a course on the engine,” says Domenic. “Even though we have a skipper on this boat I like to know as much as I can about the systems.

On our 575 we didn’t have a permanent crew so we needed to know how to run the boat ourselves. This boat is clearly a lot bigger and has far more complex systems but there will be times when we will want to sail just the two of us or with friends and family, so I think it’s important that we know how to look after her.

So what had led them to take on a full time crew? “From our previous cruising we realised that we don't want to spend all our time looking after the boat, we want to spend our time sailing and enjoying the destinations. With a bigger boat, we felt we would be spending our whole time looking after her,” explains Louise. “Plus, on passage we felt we wanted a crew so that we could operate a sensible and comfortable watch system.”

“The bottom line is that we won’t be doing passages with just the two of us,” adds Domenic. “We could if pushed, but it’s not what we want to do. We think a single person on watch on a boat of this size is not enough.

From our previous cruising we realised that we don't want to spend all our time looking after the boat, we want to spend our time sailing and enjoying the destinations. Plus, on passage we felt we wanted a crew so that we could operate a sensible and comfortable watch system.”

“What we’ve agreed with our captain is that we have two people on watch which means you need six in total if you’re to have a comfortable watch system.”

Which leaves just one obvious question – why was the Laser a secret? “My parents were immigrants from Italy and our family had very limited means. By the time I grew up to be 16, I was able to save enough money to buy a pre-owned Laser but kept it a secret from my family because I feared that they would find it to be an overly extravagant purchase and that I would be ostracized. Instead, I kept it at a friend’s house.”

“I'm not sure why I was drawn to sailing other than I felt it was something that I would really enjoy. I did and I haven't stopped since.”

o what are their plans for the seasons ahead? "We are going to be in the Caribbean through to May 2021 and back in the Mediterranean for summer 2021 before then heading to the Adriatic. After that we plan to return to the Caribbean via the ARC [Atlantic Rally for Cruisers]. And then we like to keep things open, it’s part of the adventure.”

An adventure that started with a Laser dinghy and a windsurfer.

Like us, you have probably lusted after one of those beautiful Grand Tourer automobiles of the 1950s – designed for fast, effortless driving over long distances, combining true luxury with exceptional performance capability. And, no doubt, most of us have wondered how we can improve the performance of our yachts so we can enjoy faster, more effortless passage-making.

The answer lies in the new Oyster 885GT: she combines sophisticated blue water performance with the luxury, comfort and safety for which Oyster is world-renowned. We asked Tom Humphreys to talk us through how he and the Oyster team approached the challenge.

MORE THAN THE SUM O F I T S PA R T S “We focused on all the details that make a difference to performance,” he continues. “The team all agreed the key to success was reducing weight wherever possible.

So, we specified lighter carbon elements wherever possible and a T-keel with lead bulb to reduce weight and increase the yacht’s righting moment. The payback is rewarding agility and a turn of speed on the water.

“This thinking led us to optimise the sailplan with a taller 4-spreader Hall Spars mast, and carbon rigging.

The carbon rigging is 70% lighter and the taller rig with extended bowsprit allows for 5% more upwind sail area and 15% more downwind sail area. The returns in speed and control are significant.

“The taller mast let us optimise the sail choices too.

We specified the optimised North 3Di Ocean Sail wardrobe with 780 Main and Headsail. The innovative composite construction is stronger and lighter than conventional sails and tough enough to handle multiple circumnavigations.

After optimising the keel and sail plan, the same approach was applied across the yacht, from regatta spec ropes and upgraded winch packages delivering higher line speeds, to the latest B&G instrumentation, delivering the best possible data to the helm.

“As you can imagine, she’s been a joy to work on,” Tom concludes. “It’s been a great opportunity and it has certainly pushed the team to think outside the box to find smart, effective solutions that deliver on the promise.”

Matthew Townsend is part of the Oyster team responsible for the overall project management of the 885GT, so he has been a linchpin throughout the build.

OYSTER 475/07 AQUENE OWNER: SY LVA I N B L A N C H E T T E A N D A N D R E E B E G I N PROJECT MANAGER: JOHN JOHNSON

Named with the Native American word for ‘peace’, Aquene’s first voyage took her to the far side of the Atlantic without getting her feet wet.

Aquene is the first shoal draft 475. Built with sloop rig and in-mast furling on the main sail and aft mainsheet configuration making it easy for a couple to handle. The owners live near Rochester NY and they chose the shoal draft option, which reduces the draft from the standard 2.16m to 1.75m, perfect for the shallow anchorages and harbours in the Great Lakes.

She is also equipped with a stunning painted genoa and gold cruising chute, which will catch everyone’s attention.

The interior has been beautifully finished in quarter cut oak joinery to the owners’ specification, giving her a luxurious and modern hand-crafted feel.

With temperatures falling as low as minus 20 in the winter, Aquene’s mast will need to be removed and stored inside at the end of every season. Our designers made this a much simpler task by modifying the mast connections to Deutsch series connectors.

PROJECT MANAGER COMMENTS Aquene was due to be handed over in April 2020, but at the last minute the pandemic prevented this and a new plan was hastily hatched. Eager to begin enjoying Aquene the owners decided to have her shipped to the US. Her journey was a voyage in itself – Aquene was sailed to Antwerp, where she was loaded onto a ship bound for Cleveland USA.

Following a route up the Gulf of Lawrence through Quebec, Montreal, Buffalo, the ship carrying her passed her home port on the way. So on arrival, she was then moved back 300 miles north to Shumway Marina via the Welland Canal near Rochester before reaching her final destination.

Will White from Oyster’s Newport base supervised the unloading and took the new owners through a rigorous handover to familiarise them with the yacht’s systems.

The team in the UK took part in our first ever virtual handover by WhatsApp – a new experience for us all but also a great example of the determination of the team and how technology can overcome unexpected challenges.

The couple were thrilled to take ownership and plan to set off on their first adventures in the Great Lakes in spring 2021.

We are delighted to see Aquene launched and she is testament to the perseverance of the whole team in Wroxham, the commissioning team and everyone involved over the last four years.

OYSTER 565/03 A KO YA OWNER: HUGH MULLENS PROJECT MANAGER: ANDY ARMSHAW

It feels like a lifetime since we launched 565/03 at the end of 2019 to get her to January’s boot Düsseldorf show. It took a lot of hard work and skill to get her ready to splash for the first time and motor across the North Sea in some ‘exciting’ conditions in December. She arrived in Düsseldorf with ease and was the talk of the show, garnering excellent positive feedback.

At the end of January 2020, she returned to Fox’s marina for her final fit out and preparation for final commissioning. After a couple of weeks under wraps in the shed, she came out dressed in her new vinyl colour scheme. The rig was stepped, sail trials completed, and she was ready for handover.

Even with much of the world on pause, you can’t hold back an Oyster and nothing could delay the launch of Akoya. Owner Hugh Mullens took ownership of Akoya

at the handover ceremony in Ipswich in the summer, choosing the 565 for its exceptional build quality and long-distance bluewater cruising capability. His dream of circumnavigation of the globe is now a definite plan – Akoya is signed up for the 2022-23 Oyster World Rally. Their first outing was a little less ambitious, sailing from Ipswich to Lymington. “It was a combination of trepidation and sheer joy in a gusty Force 7,” Hugh says. “And a good test of her ability to take on an uncomfortable sea.”

PROJECT MANAGER COMMENTS During our initial conversations, it quickly became clear that Hugh saw the correct specification for serious blue water cruising as more important consideration

than budget. As a result, he carefully specified a very practical boat for serious offshore sailing.

Specifying the necessary kit to make long-distance passage-making possible was paramount. He chose a hydrogenerator, vital to keep the batteries topped-up while sailing and reduce runtime and servicing of the generator. The water-maker was also chosen for its ability to work without running the generator.

Knowing that reliable fuel is not always a given in far-flung places, we installed a fuel polisher to deal with poor-quality fuel for his upcoming Oyster World Rally.

Was the owner delighted with his new yacht? We think his final comment gives it away: “I feel like the luckiest man on the planet – she is just fabulous.”

I’ve ended up with the most beautifully crafted boat – the quality of the workmanship is just outstanding. It’s just the right yacht for me, it’s fantastic… and I feel I’ve joined a real family with Oyster.

OYSTER 565/05 POLLUX OWNER: KL AUS ROSENTHAL PROJECT MANAGER: ANDY ARMSHAW

Klaus and his son Sven had never sailed a 565 before they came for the handover of their new yacht in October. The last time they saw her was before her deck was installed back in early summer – Covid restrictions prevented them seeing her again during the build. So it was with great excitement they arrived at the yard in Ipswich on a wet and blustery autumn day.

Regular photo updates from the team meant they saw her progress as she came to life in the build. Before handover Klaus and Sven had kindly allowed us to use their yacht at the Oyster Private View in Southampton.

She took pride of place in the line up and was extremely well-received. Klaus loved the way she was presented, and her high-quality finish and style was much-admired – a

testament to the owner’s taste and the team who worked on her from start to finish.

Klaus’s plans are focused on sunnier, more temperate climes, far from the autumnal squalls and chill of the North Sea. He has taken Pollux to Palma with a quick stopover in Germany to register her en route. The plan is to base her in Palma for a couple of years before setting off on bigger adventures in the future.

PROJECT MANAGER COMMENTS We managed to bring forward the handover to make sure the new owners were not held back by potential lockdowns. Despite the changeable weather, we avoided the worst of the rain and enjoyed an excellent

day’s sailing. It was pleasure to see Klaus and Sven so pleased with their design and fit out choices – and their smiles were maintained even after a whole day of looking at systems in the bilges!

Their smiles were even wider when they took her out on the water to put her through her paces. Klaus and Sven were thrilled with how she performed in boisterous conditions. It was a great experience for their maiden sail. Sailing downwind with white sails, they followed up with the asymmetric spinnaker, reaching 18 knots on the North Sea just past Felixstowe.

Knowing the challenges the team overcame during lockdown to get 565/05 finished, it was a real pleasure to see her set sail with her new owners.

We are delighted with our choice of the 565 and we’re really happy to be the newest members of the Oyster family.

For most Oyster owners upgrading to the right boat to satisfy new ambitions for adventure drives the decision to trade up. This was the motivation for Domenic Pilla and Louise de Serres to switch up from their 575 to a new 745.

“For around 25 years we chartered instead as we moved around,” explains Domenic.

“So even though we missed having our own boat, it was a great opportunity to explore different parts of the world from Thailand to the Mediterranean and the Caribbean.

We also got to try out a range of boats in the process which, as it turns out, helped us when it came to understanding what we might want in a boat if we ever got to own one later on.” They chose the 575 and happily sailed over 10,000 miles on her.

The impetus to upgrade came from the wish for more space to share their sailing adventures with family and friends. The 675 didn’t offer the step up in size and versatility they wanted, so they chose the 745 for its size and ability to accommodate a full crew without limiting the number of guests.

The couple’s sailing plans take in the Caribbean until May 2021, the Mediterranean for summer 2021 before then heading to the Adriatic. After that we plan to return to the Caribbean. “And then we will keep things open, it’s part of the adventure!” says Domenic.

PROJECT MANAGER COMMENTS Versatility of space below decks was paramount and the owners chose a five cabin layout with 11 berths and five heads.

Two of the cabins can be configured as a double or a twin. Everyone’s privacy is maintained by separate crew quarters with independent access to the deck.

The cutter rig with in-mast furling is another obvious change from the standard Oyster specification, chosen for ease of handling shorthanded.

We love the 745 – the way she sails, her size and the ease with which she can be managed with an accommodation layout that suits us, our family and friends.

OYSTER 885/10 ACHENAR OWNER: DAVID & WENDY BR ABEN PROJECT MANAGER: ANDREW MARTIN

Many people dream of owning an Oyster. And many Oyster owners dream of upgrading to a larger Oyster as their taste for adventure grows. David and Wendy’s first Oyster 575 drew them into the family and, when the time was right, they decided to commission 88510 to take their bluewater adventures to another level. Achenar perfectly showcases the many possibilities for personalisation of our yachts.

They named her Achenar after a star that is ten times brighter than the sun and appears elliptical when viewed through a telescope. This precise shape has been cleverly designed into the pink and white turtle logo (designed by the Brabens) that runs through the entire boat, from the striking dark blue hull to the elliptical drainer feature of the Onyx stone back-lit bar of the saloon drinks servery.

Featuring the signature Oyster raised deck saloon, Achenar is highly specified with a Halls carbon mast and Oceanfurl in-

boom furling mainsail. The sails are North 3Di in a striking black finish. These are complemented by an asymmetric spinnaker and Code 0 on a hydraulic furler. All this adds up to a yacht that is capable of taking on adventures of all shapes and sizes.

The couple are looking forward to her hand over in spring 2021 and plan to head to the Mediterranean, then take her across the Atlantic to the Caribbean for the following year.

PROJECT MANAGER COMMENTS David and Wendy were closely involved with the interior design, choosing the colour scheme, light ash joinery with walnut detailing and cabin soles. Carefully chosen contrasting fabric provides a stunning result. They also had the middle cabin turned into a snug/cabin area, with a day WC and open plan bulkhead to a settee. The bulkhead can be closed off and

settee extended to create a comfortable en-suite double cabin. Between this cabin and the galley, a large TV drops down to reveal an open bulkhead, linking the snug and galley spaces together.

They were keen to be able to run their air conditioning overnight without running the generators. We achieved this by fitting a large bank of Lithium Ion batteries with a total capacity of 2800 amp/hours. These are charged by two engine alternators and six battery chargers. Six inverters convert the 24V DC battery power into 230V AC to power the aircon and AC appliances overnight and in the morning before the generators are started up to recharge the batteries. David and Wendy were delighted to see Achenar launched and very pleased with how she looks on the water. The complete interiors with uncovered joinery detailing surpassed their expectations.

We are thrilled with the finish and the way the team have gone the extra mile to bring our vision to life. We can’t wait to take her out for her first adventure next summer.
