Go out of your way to preserve the endangered indigenous vegetation. Fynbos is the most threatened and diverse biome in the world and 69% of its species are found nowhere else on earth. It is home and a retreat for many endemic birds, insects, small wildlife and our resident guineafowl and tortoises.
Trees too are important as more and more are being lost to urban sprawl. Be considerate and compassionate towards all sentient beings. They are also entitled to their space on our planet and humans would have no quality of life without the biodiversity of nature.

SEDGEFIELD BEACHES Simply Amazing The beaches in and around Sedgefield are simply amazing. While they get pretty crowded during the festive season and on weekends, they are generally very quiet and uncrowded. Sedgefield has impressive beaches, but there are more glorious beaches on either side, with Wilderness Beach to the west and Buffels Bay / Wildside to the east.
The beaches in Sedgefield all connect to cover almost 6 km, but the most popular beach in Sedgefield is Swartvlei Beach. With steep cliffs on the western side, Swartvlei is sheltered from
the predominant southwest winds.
During the hot days of summer, the cliffs create thermal updraft winds, making for ideal launch spots for paragliding. During the late afternoons of summer, before the weather has cooled down for the day, it is not
uncommon to see dozens of paragliders gently floating above the beach, watching the world go by below.
GERICKE’S POINT The walk to Gericke’s Point – the far western tip of Swartvlei – is a fabulous beach walk of about 1,5km. For those keen, there are a few incredible surfing waves just around the corner of the point. The waves are of a serious nature and not for beginners.
Gericke’s Point sits in the lee of the summer easterly winds and is perfectly sheltered.
It has gin-clear and deep rock pools exposed at low tide, filling up at high tide. It is best to walk back to the Swartvlei car park from Gericke’s Point long before high tide, as it sometimes gets too high to pass and can get quite dangerous.
Further east of Swartvlei is Sedgefield beach, Myoli Beach and Cola beach. Excellent beaches with expansive tracts of open sands. Further west is Platbank beach. To get to this secluded beach, you take the Lake Pleasant turn-off.
A narrow and windy track will take you right over the ridge to Platbank, where the only other people might be a few fishermen on a crowded day.
